Icari|macfor wired network it has auto eth0 and iface eth0 inet dhcp in interface file18:20
Icari|mac*interefaces18:20
jason__Icari|mac: whatever is in the interface "rules all", so what WICD and what NetworkManager would be set to, it wouldnt matter since the interface file would rule all.18:21
jason__Icari|mac: So if you have ONLY your loopback (auto lo and the 2nd line, forget what it is) hooked up, then you add a wired interface in NM or WICD, it should pick up and take priority since interface file wouldnt have anything preloaded.18:21
Icari|macwould those 2 lines keep the wired network from getting ip address after inital boot?18:22
jason__No, those 2 lines are required to do ANYTHING. It's your loopback. Windows has it as well. Pretty much any OS working on the TCP/IP stack would have it = loopback is 127.0.0.1 across all systems.18:22

jason__Icari|mac: If you add those eth0 lines back but ensure WICD is not running, then restart the network service.... I'm wondering what will happen then18:39
Icari|machow do i stop wicd again?18:39
jason__right click its icon in the corner and hit quit18:39
htrejhhi18:39
BluesKajIcari|mac, I'm not suggesting you use staic ip, but the network setup is very similar , just ignore the staic and sub dhcp in it's place18:40
htrejhhow to force to install wine1.2 from the ubuntu repo18:40
htrejhtries: sudo apt-get install wine1.2/1.1.3118:40
htrejhbut it failed, any idea?18:40
jason__why not just apt-get install wine>?18:40
Icari|macok i quit wicd18:40
jason__ok18:40
jason__add these two lines back to your interface file18:40
BluesKajanyway gotta go .. stuff to do18:40
jason__auto eth0 - line one18:41
jason__iface eth0 inet dhcp - line two18:41
jason__so overall you have auto lo (line 1) something about loopback (line 2) line 3 is blank, line 4 is auto eth0, line 5 is iface eth0 inet dhcp18:41
htrejhjason__: cuz i also have a version from the ppa18:41
Icari|macyes18:41
jason__save it, close out of it - then run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart18:41
BluesKajthat's the right setting18:41
Icari|mac"No DHCPOFFERS recieved" No working leases in persistent database - sleeping"18:42
jason__efffffff18:42
jason__why is this not working...18:42
jason__you did type eth0 and not etho right?18:42
Icari|macyes18:43
jason__man... Im kind of at a loss.18:43
jason__has this system ever worked fine with kubuntu?18:44
Icari|macit is a brand new system/install as of wednesday of this week18:44
jason__did it work fine after the initial install?18:44
Icari|macmy laptops graphics card took a nose dive18:44
Icari|macnot that i can recall18:44
Icari|macsame issues this whole time18:44
jason__what if you fire up the kubuntu livecd.18:44
jason__I wonder if it acts this way on the livecd.18:45
jason__whats the model of your computer?18:45
Icari|macdell studio xps 800018:45
jason__this is a dell laptop?18:45
jason__or dekstop?18:45
Icari|macdesktop18:45
Icari|macwith a wireless card in it18:45
jason__what few XPS's are on UbuntuHCL.org are listed as 5/5 compatible, but the 8000 isnt listed.18:46
Icari|macthe 8000 i think is somewhat new, but i am not sure18:47
jason__I dont know what else to do. Im kind of at a loss. I wonder if the livecd would act the same way. If you can boot to the livecd and get a network connection and maybe even wireless, then we at least know it works.18:47
jason__which at that point begs the obvious question - what happened to the install that we can reverse to get working again?18:47
Icari|maci have no idea at all18:47
jason__do you have a kubuntu livecd?18:47
Icari|macyes18:48
jason__why dont you fire that up in the desktop a while18:48
jason__dont install - just hit the live desktop18:48
Icari|macok18:48
jason__justplay around with it after it loads and see what its doing as far as network connectivity18:48
jason__are you going to be here for a little bit Icari|mac?18:48
Icari|maci think so18:49
jason__okay, while thats loading, Im gonna run up the street and get chinese quick :P18:49
Icari|macok18:49
Icari|macit will not take long to load :P18:49
htrejhdoes someone know how to force the installation of a package version with apt-get ?18:49
jason__I know - but Im hungryyy "{18:49
jason__:P18:49
Icari|machtrejh: you still trying to install wine?18:49
htrejhIcari|mac: yes to force a specific version18:50
Icari|machttp://www.winehq.org/download/deb is what i used to install wine on my desktop, it works fine for me18:50
jason__if you add the PPA and then just do apt-get install wine, doenst it grab the PPA version first before it grabs the repo version?18:50
Icari|macsudo apt-get install wine1.218:50
htrejhlol no18:51
Icari|macppa is 1.218:51
Icari|macnot just wine18:51
htrejhi need 1.1.3118:51
Icari|macwhy?18:51
htrejhdue to a regression18:51
Icari|maclatest version works fine for me18:51
htrejhnot for me -_-18:51
Icari|machttp://www.winehq.org/announce/1.1.3118:51
Icari|macdownload and install and put a hold on the ppa repo install18:52
htrejhit's : sudo apt-get install wine=1.1.3118:52
htrejhsomething like that18:52
Icari|macit is possible the repo does not have the older versions in it still, the way i suggested should work fine18:53
htrejhyes ok, but now the ppa doesn't archive older versions :(18:53
Icari|macyou should also report the regression to wine so it can be fixed18:54
htrejhyep i'm regression testing :p18:55
Icari|mac1.1.34 had a regression but it was fixed in 1.1.3518:56
tzangergood afternoon19:02
tzangerI'm running 9.10 and I cannot for the life of me get any printing (to a printer) to work. under the system settings, all my basic server settings are greyed out. I tried running it under sudo but it didn't help19:03
BluesKajtzanger, what model printer?19:04
tzangercups is installed19:04
tzangerBluesKaj: it's a remote printer (canon mp530, works great on a ubuntu 9.04 system)19:04
jason__Icari|mac: howd it work out?19:04
Icari|macseemed to work fine :(19:05
jason__wifi too?19:05
Icari|maccould not test wifi though, but restarting the network it reconnected19:05
Icari|macit would not install the driver19:05
tzangerBluesKaj: I'm not even getting that far though; it's like this 9.10 system simply has no ability to print19:05
jason__yeah, sometimes installing stuff on livecd works and other times it doesnt.19:06
jason__I can install gparted on a livecd (kubuntus livecd doesnt seem to have it) but drivers never flew for me.19:06
BluesKajtzanger, perhaps someone else can help , I avoided the same issue with the hplip deb for HPs19:06
jason__is there stuff on the install that sworth saving?19:06
jason__or is it a brand new install with nothing on it?19:06
Icari|macit has stuff on it19:06
BluesKajgotta go for sure now19:06
jason__Im thinking since its hard to retrace the exact steps that happened when it backfired, going windows-style-troubleshooting on it may be the best and quickest bet - aka, reinstall. :(19:07
jason__maybe you could back the stuff up and do a fresh install and see where that takes you... just a suggestion though19:07
tzangerBluesKaj: got it; cups was not actually running19:07
tzangerit was installed but nto runnign19:08
Icari|maci removed wifi-radar and now on reboot wired is not connected :(19:08
jason__Im not too familiar with wifi radar19:08
Icari|macjason__: is it possible to do a reinstall and keep /home partition?19:10
jason__Icari|mac: did you separate root from home?19:11
jason__in the intiial install?19:11
Icari|macyes19:11
jason__dang you're good. Yes you can keep home and only format root.19:11
Icari|machow do i do that?19:11
jason__thats the smartest thing you can do on a linux install, is separating home from root.19:11
Icari|maci was told to do that when i first started to use linux several years ago19:12
jason__When you put in the Kubuntu LiveCD, go through the prompts till you get to the partition editor. It's step 4 I believe.19:12
jason__Choose manual editing of partitions. It slisted as advanced mode or something like that.19:12
jason__You're going to have to set up root and home again. What file system are they? EXT4?19:12
Icari|macwhatever was default file system19:13
jason__are you on 9.10?19:13
Icari|macyes19:13
jason__9.10's default is EXT4.19:13
Icari|macok19:13
jason__When you get into the partition editor screen, youll see the partitions laid out.19:13
jason__They wont be labeled as root and home. Just EXT4 volume or something. But based on the size you can tell them apart, since your root partition is probably relatively small hwereas home is everything else.19:14
jason__Make sure you set up root to be formatted, EXT4 file system, and mounted as \19:14
Icari|macyep19:14
jason__with home, make sure its EXT4 and mounted as /home19:14
jason__BUT make sure the format box IS NOT checked for home.19:14
jason__It has to be checked for root, but NOT checked for home. Make sure of that 4 5 6 times over again.19:14
Icari|macok i am checking that now19:14
jason__If you want to be EXTRA certain, you could always back your stuff up through the LiveCD to an external hard drive or something. Just a thought.19:15
Icari|maci wish my external hd was 1 tb :P19:15
jason__are you using 1tb of space though?19:15
Icari|macnope19:15
Icari|macbut the external is about half full of junk of 2 laptops19:16
jason__you only need the external to be as big as the data youre backing up.19:16
Icari|maci know19:16
Icari|maci still need to try to get access to stuff on my old laptop from cli19:16
jason__is your old laptop running linux?19:16
Icari|macyep had 9.10 on it 64 bit19:17
Icari|macwith dead graphics card :(19:17
jason__so you get zero video output on it?19:17
Icari|macno i can get it to boot to cli and that is all, no gui will load19:17
Icari|maci also get a ton of graphical artifacts19:17
jason__ahh, yeah, you just need to navigate to your data and copy it over?19:18
Icari|macyep but my VM install will not fit on 40 gig of space :( for some reason19:18
Icari|maclivecd install is NOT letting me check the format box for the / partition19:19
=== administrator is now known as Guest140
Icari|macah now i see, nvm19:19
jason__so just to recap a couple things just so we dont go down the wrong avenue here19:20
jason__You have your root and home partition split on different partitions, with a ton of data on the home partition itself. Correct?19:20
jason__I just hate to advise you to do something and then it backfires... since it's hard with me not physically seeing it.19:20
Icari|macyes19:21
Icari|maci set it to mount / as / and reformat and swap as swap and /home as /home and NOT touch it19:21
jason__and you set both root and home as EXT4, right?19:21
Icari|macalthough i think 16 gig of swap is more then enough19:22
Icari|macyes19:22
jason__and when you set up kubuntu 9.10 originally you had it at EXT4?19:22
Icari|macyes19:22
jason__k, caue its just important we line the stars up properly here.19:22
Icari|maci understand19:22
jason__and yes I would think 16gb of swap is overkill. :P I personally have 2gb swap on my system.19:22
Icari|maci was told 2x the amount of ram for swap19:23
Icari|macwell i have a tb of space... 16gig is not that much19:23
jason__Yeah, thats typically how it goes - but with people having more nad more RAM these days its not as critical as it used to be.19:23
jason__It used to be  you had 256mb RAM, then double the swap made more sense.19:23
Icari|macyea19:23
Icari|maceven with my 2 gig ram on my old laptop it needed the swap19:23
jason__but even still, like you said, you got a fricken TB :P19:23
iconmefistoit's important if you want to hibernate, etc19:24
jason__what about suspend?19:24
Icari|maci dont do that with my systems19:24
Icari|macnope19:24
jason__I never -ever- use hibernate. ever.19:24
jason__I  have had the worst luck with hibernate with all operating systems. Vista, 7, you name it. I just dont touch it now.19:24
Icari|maci leave my systems up 24/7 if i can19:24
jason__I suspend my work laptop, but thats about it19:24
Icari|macwhich i think is why my graphics card fried in my old laptop :P19:24
jason__my main desktop is on 247 since its a backup server as well19:24
jason__lol - could be :P19:25
iconmefistoI can never get suspend to work19:25
jason__I find it hard to believe your graphics card died when you still have CLi access though?19:25
jason__suspend alwyas works for me, since its just suspending to ram. its hibernate that is trickier.19:25
Icari|macit is not 100% dead but no gui can load for kde19:25
jason__ohhhhhh I understand. It just cant take the power of a desktop environment.19:25
Icari|macand i have the artifacts on the screen as a clear sign19:25
Icari|macyep19:25
jason__okay anyway, where are we with the livecd?19:26
Icari|macdied while i was eatting dinner monday night19:26
Icari|mac56% installing19:26
jason__dang, nice19:26
jason__you were using it at the time?19:26
Icari|macnope it was idle while i was in the kitchen19:26
jason__came back and blam - it was a gonner?19:26
Icari|maccpu was at 100% and screen frozen, reboot for hours and no gui would load19:27
jason__dangggg19:27
jason__tons of data on it?19:27
Icari|macthen i started to do a backup and ran out of space on the external hd19:27
jason__ahhh crap, gotta love that19:27
jason__do you have room to push the data to back up elsewhere?19:27
Icari|macwell i had a 360gig hd and about 250+ free19:27
Icari|macnow i do :P19:28
jason__are you just going to do a sudo cp /home /external?19:28
Icari|macput it on the desktop with the TB19:28
jason__yeah - but with being CLI only I wonder how you could connect up to the desktop...19:28
Icari|maci tried that when i ran out of space then i just took a few folders and files i needed/wanted19:28
Icari|macno backup the external hd to the desktop19:28
jason__ahhhhhhhh - I gotcha.19:29
jason__free up the external for laptop CLI backups - I see I see19:29
Icari|macyep19:29
jason__So does your entire family use linux?19:29
Icari|machehe i wish, my mom uses 7 atm, i need to fix her dual boot though 7 wiped grup19:29
jason__ah yeah - you can fix that through the livecd I think. I think the official ubuntu site has documentation on it.19:30
iconmefisto!grub19:30
ubottugrub is the default boot manager for Ubuntu releases before Karmic (9.10). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto - See !grub2 for Karmic onwards.19:30
Icari|macyep19:30
=== Dekans[afk] is now known as Dekans
jason__I just got my mom on kubuntu last night.19:30
Icari|maci have read it, but till this week had no 9.10 live cd and 9.04 failed to find the boot partition19:30
Icari|mac80% done19:31
jason__got my brothers new desktops for Xmas - dual booted XP and Kubuntu. Mom got curious enough to ask so I set it up. An hour later I was at the mall and she texted me how much she loves it.19:31
Icari|macnice19:31
jason__I was sooooooo lucky though.19:31
Icari|macyep19:31
jason__Before I did anything to her pc, I made an image of her system with clonezilla livecd before I touched it.19:31
Icari|maci have never used any ghost programs19:31
jason__then I used gparted to resize her partition to free up space for kubuntu. Well, something backfired. When I rebooted, the partition table was corrupt.19:31
Icari|macouch19:32
jason__So I blasted her partition back, tried resizing again, and it worked fine.19:32
jason__I was so, so lucky.19:32
jason__I couldnt even access her data from the livecd. the table was zapped.19:32
Icari|maci was luck gparted worked fine to make room for 719:32
Icari|mac*lucky19:32
jason__well, I dont know what the difference was, but I first did it with gparted on a livecd with ubuntu. that's what failed.19:32
jason__the 2nd time I tried gparted itself on a stand-alone livecd (no ubuntu)19:32
jason__that worked fine then.19:32
Icari|macah i always use gparted not from the linux cd19:33
jason__but yeah, I use imaging applications a lot at work.19:33
jason__clonezilla livecd for isngle backups and FOG (linux based server imaging) for mass-cloning of computers.19:33
Icari|maci am still in school... which is starting in a few days19:33
jason__you going to school for tech stuff?19:34
Icari|macyep19:34
jason__if you ever get into tech support and need to image a truckload of windows machines - check out FOG.19:34
Icari|maci would rather put linux on them :P19:34
jason__I can image 20 windows computers in a half hour's time right from my work laptop.19:34
jason__you can image with FOG with linux too :P19:34
Icari|machehe19:34
jason__but Im kind of stuck working in a windows environment. Its a school district, so windows is dirt cheap for us to license.19:34
Icari|maci just hope when i graduate i can find a job in this economy19:34
Icari|macah19:35
Icari|macabout 3 minutes left to the install19:35
jason__well, if you can get in a school dsitrict, you might not get top dollar, but youll get awesome benefits and great job security.19:35
Icari|maci have done work for my teachers before and known more then their tech geeks19:35
jason__In fact, it's probably thanks to FOG that I even got full time. I started as part time cau eI couldnt find anything else.19:36
Icari|maci know more then my mom's tech geek at work :( and he keeps asking her to ask me, i will not do his work for free19:36
jason__But we got a shipment of 1,000 computers in to replace the years of neglected systems, and nobody had any idea how to clone them without ordering ghost.19:36
Icari|macouch19:36
jason__so I spoke up and said I had an idea19:36
jason__boss didnt want anything to do with it since it hadnt been officially tested before and we didnt have much time to flirt with.19:37
jason__I sad but its free, open source, and I already have it installed.19:37
jason__I just asked for a chance to test it live and he gave me the opportunity. Before I knew it, I had all 1000 cloned and an additional 800 of our existing systems re-done. All within about 10 weeks.19:37
Icari|macnice19:38
jason__mind you, during those 10 weeks I had to physically unbox and hook up the 1000 systems too, which sucked.19:38
Icari|maci bet19:38
jason__but anyway, school districts are great unless youre looking for top dollar. Something to keep in mind.19:38
Icari|macwell i am getting a 2 year degree, i dont expect top top dollar19:39
jason__yeah - I have a 2 year degree as well.19:39
jason__you might be surprised where it can take you though.19:39
jason__I've talked to tech business owners who will take somebody with a 2 year degree that has hands on experience before somebody with a 4/6 year degree.19:39
Icari|maci will have that degree in may +2 certificates and 2 more in the summer [i think that is all of them]19:39
jason__yeah - certs weigh heavily too. Something I have nothing of... yet.19:39
Icari|macinstall complete19:40
jason__good deal, reboot that hizzy and see what's happening19:40
jason__brb19:40
Icari|maci need to get the cert but a certificate is a plus to get there19:40
Icari|macit is booted up19:42
jason__hows it lookin?19:43
Icari|macinstalling graphics card driver to start, then trying the broadcom driver19:44
Icari|mac[as a gamer i need that ;) ]19:44
jason__you game in *nix?19:44
Icari|macwell with wine, but yes19:44
jason__can you hit your home dir all right?19:44
Icari|macwell my desktop looks the same as it did before i rebooted19:45
Icari|macyep i can access it fine19:45
jason__all the stuff there?19:45
Icari|macyea19:45
jason__well you just had your crash course on why its so helpful to have your stuff partitioned separate. Reinstalling linux is a breeze with your stuff already separated.19:46
Icari|mac33% done with graphics card driver then we can try wireless19:46
Icari|macyep and with an intel i7 processor it goes super fast19:46
jason__yeah19:46
jason__I want an i7 :(19:46
jason__Im running on 4gb of DDR2800 ram with a quad core 8200 LGA775 socket19:46

jason__what did you get? tower only? or monitorkeyboard/etc with it too?19:47
Icari|mackeyboard mouse was included and i got a 23" widescreen monitor as well19:47

jason__STA and B43?19:53
Icari|macjust sta but no ui in sight19:53
jason__oh, wait...19:53
jason__shyt let me think19:53
jason__I ran into this with my owrk laptop19:53
jason__I had two broadcom drivers available. One of them wouldnt work righ tunless I upgraded kernels first.19:54
Icari|macoh19:54
jason__I had to install all updates which brought down the new kernel, reboot, and then install the broadcom driver.19:54
jason__I thought that was only for my model laptop.19:54
jason__I completely forgot about it.19:54
jason__Is there anyway you can get back into KDE to get the updates and whatnot? Or did the driver lock you out?19:54
Icari|macso go into recovery mode and sudo apt-get update etc?19:55
jason__you could try that. I forget how I got around it...19:55
jason__god I wish I would have remembered that beforehand.19:56
Icari|macits ok19:56
Icari|mac25+ minutes of upgrades19:56
jason__I think my driver install failed though. It froze every time I tried to install it and I would reboot, go back to Kubuntu, and it would just prompt me again to install.19:56
jason__I dont remember it locking me out. It was always just not completing.19:56
Icari|maci hate my dsl :P it is so slow19:56
Icari|macso back to how much you think i paid for this monster of a pc19:57

Swingeran orange messeage is a private one?19:59
jason__Icari|mac: you cant go wrong with a full rig of that power for that. Compare that to the performance youd get with Mac - you woulda paid 2950 easy.19:59
jason__no, it just means I said your name19:59
Icari|macyea that is one reason i went with a dell and not a mac, not to mention i wanted kubuntu19:59
Swingeroh19:59
jason__if I say hey - swinger - whats up man. It highlights your name as orange to get your attention because I sad your name.19:59

jason__best buy has a deal right now, 330 bucks for a 12 inch laptops. Its basically a netbook though.20:03
Icari|maci have a blackbook i am chatting to you on atm, 13" widescreen20:03
Icari|mac5-6 hour battery life if i am careful20:03
jason__1gb ram, intel atom 1.6ghz proc, 160gb hdd, A B G N wifi, 12 inch screen for 329. I want it so bad.20:03
iconmefistoyou're talking US prices, I assume?20:04
jason__but I cant justify buying it when I have a latitude work laptop that has kubuntu on it that works great. Even tho its a work laptop, what I do on a laptop it handles fine.20:04
jason__yes, US prices20:04
Icari|macyes20:04
Icari|macmy desktop + monitor NEW from dell would have been closer to 1.5k20:04
jason__yeah, you cant go wrong with the outlet. My buddy just got an inspiron tower from the outlet.20:05
jason__He got a dual core, 6gb of RAM, 640gb HDD, tower only with Vista + 7 upgrade for 400.20:05
jason__its a basic pentium dual core though, but even still...20:05
jason__with a windows key and all, tower only, aint too shabby20:05
Icari|macmy last laptop was from the outlet, i heard it was about 4k new i got it for about 1k, xps m1710 [i think it is]20:05
jason__man - any XPS laptop is gonna be expensive.20:05
jason__but 1k aint bad.20:06
Icari|macyep20:06
jason__Im so cheap with computers. :(20:06
Icari|macupgrade from an ati x300 i had before20:06
jason__Ive been saving up to get a laptop, and even though I have about 800 in cash sitting here ready for a laptop I have trouble justifying it.20:06
jason__I have an old crappy mac that works, a work laptop with kubuntu on it (my bread and butter), its just hard to get ANOTHER one when my work lpatop is quite fine for the basc stuff I do.20:06
Icari|macafter what happened to that one, i would think twice about getting another laptop for daily use20:06
Swingeri bought a really old computer so i won't waste my time on computer games, and have more time to sduty, needless to say windows ran like crap on it, so i put kubuntu, and its great, little buggy but still better then windows on an old AMD ATHLON 210020:07
Icari|macsometimes linux can run much better then windows on older machines20:07
Swingeri bought it for 40$20:08
jason__thats why I feel like a netbook would be ideal for me. Netbooks are cheap, basic, and fairly usable with basic daily tasks.20:08
jason__I always feel like you should use a basic laptop to fill in the portability gap, but put the rest of your oomph in getting a beefy desktop. beefy desktop + basic laptop is a combo I seem to favor.20:08
Icari|maci have this macbook i cant justify getting another desktop/laptop/netbook20:08
jason__As a result, a 12" netbook would probably be right up my alley. That is assuming a 1.6ghz proc could push kubuntu - which I would think it would. Itd be the integrated graphics that would limit me from eye candy though :(20:09
Icari|maci like the eye candy20:09
jason__me too :(20:09
Icari|macwithout wobbly windows the screen just seems "stiff"20:09

jason__my boss upgraded my laptop when he saw what kind of imaging I was doing from it, since my laptop is essentially a mobile linux server.20:10
Icari|mactry running them on an ati mobility x300 with 64 mb ram :P20:10
jason__no kidding man?20:10
jason__I hate you guys, youre going to convince me to spend over 300 bucks on a netbook I dont need.20:10
Icari|machehe20:10
jason__speaking of which, Im on a Pentium 4 desktop now with 1gb of RAM, Kubuntu 9.10, full desktop effects, integrated intel graphics.20:11

Icari|maclooks like 11 min left on the upgrade download, if i can really read that number from across the room20:11
jmichaelxjason__: i also have a mini 9, with a 10" screen w/ gnome/compiz... no problems20:11
Swingeri have a 6 years old geforce 5200, and the effects are working pretty nice, sometimes alittle laggy20:11
jmichaelxSwinger: is it PCI or AGP?20:12
SwingerAGP20:12
jason__well the 5200 wasnt the best nvidia chip ever...20:12
jason__not to stab at ya, but, ya know :P20:12
Icari|macthe nvidia card i had die i think was a GeForce go 790020:12
jason__my brothers were running 5200s on their old rigs before I got them new ones for xmas20:13
jmichaelxi have a kid with a PCI geforce 5200, and all works fine, including compiz... but she is only using a 15" LCD with it20:13
Swingeri have a Geforce PCIX 5300 at my parents home20:13
Swingerit wont run kubuntu20:14
jmichaelxSwinger: it should, unless the CPU is really old20:14
jmichaelxmy kid's is running on a P# 1Ghz... although she is using gnome & compiz20:14

Icari|maclocked out20:17
jason__dang20:17
jason__what happened when you booted up?20:17
Icari|macbut the update is not done yet20:17
jason__did it just never display yet?20:17
Icari|macblack screen20:17
jason__yeah, Im just curious cauu eon my work laptop I could get back in just fine - it just never gave me the driver. It always failed to download/install.20:18
Icari|macwe will know more when this update is done20:18
jason__yeah. Its just frustrating that installing a driver would brick a system like that, ya know.20:18
Icari|macfor now i am going to blame wifi-radar for this all :P20:19
jason__lol - there ya go20:19
jason__Ive never even used wifi radar. what is it?20:19
Icari|macsimilar to wicd but for wireless20:20
jason__ahh I see.20:21
Icari|maci saw a post on one of the ubuntu forums that said to install that and then you could install the broadcom driver20:21
Icari|macso i went and did that before i looked for the driver20:21
Icari|macpackages downloaded... installing now20:23
jason__k20:23
jason__it should prompt you with the reboot then... itll give you the options of the diff kernel... .16 is the one that worked for me. .14 didnt on my laptop with the broadcom.20:24
Icari|macok20:24
jason__this was a learning experience for me to consider that the updates might fix driver issues like this in the future.20:24
Icari|macand idealy the broadcom should work "out of the box" with the driver installed?20:24
jason__didnt expect it to happen, but hey - it did :P20:24
jason__well, not necessarily20:24
jason__the broadcom driver youll always have to install20:24
Icari|macwell i hope i am that lucky20:24
jason__its not integrated in ubuntu itself.20:24
jason__broadcom didnt want to release drivers for linux whatsoever, but since dell uses a ton of broadcom, and dell sells pcs with ubuntu preinstalled, it was a ton of pressure on broadcom to stop being so nazi driven.20:25
jason__so broadcom released closed source drivers - which is the STA and B43 you see in hardware manager for drivers.20:25
Icari|macB43 is not there on my system20:25
jason__they cant pre-package them, but they can prompt you to download/install them after the initial install - which is hwat happened with you.20:25
jason__Yeah, but B43 is another option that may apply to people with other broadcom cards.20:26
Icari|macok20:26
jason__There isnt a single driver that rules everything, thats why theres B43 and STA, they take on diff hardware.20:26
Icari|macrebooting20:26
jason__If it worked "out of box" youd have the driver already integrated in the kernel and no need to download/install.20:26
jason__lets hope this works.......20:26

troy43Hi!, some expert in PPA?, I own a PPA to distribute my program, it has a jaunty published package, how can I updated it to karmic? Am I supposed to recompile it in a karmic pc and upload it again or can the ubuntu buildroots do this for me from the ppa webpage?20:30
jason__I assume if you boot into .14 kernel its the same deal there too?20:31
Icari|maclet me check20:31
ChichOhelp, please20:31
jason__there might be a solution... but it may be sorta tricky...20:32
jason__if you can boot into recovery console, and type "aptitude" itll load up a CLI based version of synaptic.20:32
Icari|macok20:32
jason__From there if you can navigate to the broadcom driver and remove it, you might get lucky20:32
jason__I just searched synaptic on my laptop and 4 things came up when I searched for broadcom. 3 are installed.20:33
Icari|macwhere would it be in there?20:33
jason__let me try and figure it out20:33
