akxthankx man i couldnt find the i tried for like 3 hrs16:55
ron_oI created a separate /tmp partition for the first time on a new install. Usually I leave /tmp in  "/" . Now, I keep needing to delete files in there to add more space. Even though it's large, 12GB, if I copy DVDs and such it fills up quickly.17:21
ron_ois this normal?17:21
ron_ofrom what I understand, /tmp is normally just in RAM and SWAP and so everything gets removed automatically when apps don't need them anymore or you restart the computer.17:22
TheSheepron_o: that's not true17:53
TheSheepron_o: it's a normal partition like everything else, except that some systems may be configured to clear it once in a while, for example on reboot17:53
TheSheepron_o: maybe you should just enable the "delete the image when copying is done" option in your cd copying program17:54
ron_oTheSheep, ok. Well then I guess I heard it wrong then. I'll config copy program for it.18:04
ron_othe thing that confused me was before on 9.04, on reboot my /tmp directory would clear. Plus, when I closed my internet browser, anything it put in there would clear. now it just stays there even on reboot.18:06
Pres-Gasron_o, you may be thinking of solaris (possibly BSD???).  Their /tmp directory was also the swap file.18:28
Pres-GasI don't think it is anymore, but it used to me18:28
Pres-Gass/me/be18:29
ron_oPres-Gas, yah, maybe.18:30
ron_othe next time I reboot this machine, which at this moment it looks like about never (it's so stable) I'll see what's going on in the swap. :)18:31
Pres-Gasron_o, did you configure a different swap partition?18:32
ron_oI just created a totally separate partition now and never have before. Other than that, nothing.18:32
ron_orather, I meant in /tmp...18:33
ron_oso sorry. I wrote the wrong thing.18:33
Pres-GasHmmm, it should have complained if you did not make a swap partition18:33
ron_oI did... I have swap.18:33
Pres-GasSo you have / swap and /tmp, ron_o?18:34
ron_oyah, sorry for the confusion.18:34
Pres-Gasnp18:34
ron_o... /swap 2GB and /tmp 12GB18:35
Pres-GasHow big is your / ?18:35
ron_omy / is 16GB18:35
ron_oyah, big, I know.18:35
Pres-GasNo other partitions?18:35
ron_o... /boot @ 1GB and /home @ the rest...18:36
ron_oplus another spare / (figuring instead of upgrading, I like installing fresh).18:36
Pres-GasWhoa, /boot is pretty big...512 would have been a tad on the large side, 256 ideal unless you plan on keeping a ton of kernel images18:37
ron_oPres-Gas, I agree. However, I have plenty of space... I ran out of space when everyone was recommending 100MB, so I just went large.18:37
ron_o.. /boot is pretty important to care about 512MB.18:38
ron_ohehe, 512MB is nothing until you run out of space. :)18:39
Sysifedora's default /boot is 200mb18:40
ron_othat's a very good size 200mb.18:40
ron_oif I ever do it again, I'll go about that size because everyone just complains about my large /boot'eee  ;->18:41
ron_osome say, the larger /boot'eee the better, but I digress..18:42

Pres-Gassometimes...it is like I get busy at the day job...and then I miss the action here...20:59
likemindeadThere's only eight or so folks in here that are actually active. :-\20:59
knomelikemindead, well, you have to be happy we are hyperactive21:01
charlie-tcaWe could ask some in #ubuntu to come here for help?21:02
* likemindead just dipped into his vacuum flask of afternoon coffee. :D21:02
=== XX is now known as likemindead
Pres-GasWhoa, likemindead is like an Agent in the Matrix!  :P21:04
likemindeadDecided to hop over from a desktop to my laptop.21:05
likemindeadMy ancient, PIII laptop that love's Xubuntu 9.10, that is!21:05
* likemindead is ready for some 10.04 action.21:06
charlie-tcawell, start testing the images monday21:07
charlie-tcaAlpha 2 is coming, which is my time to swithc21:07
diego453686Hi, I've got a doubt regarding a video card ati mobility radeon x1400, the problem is that the drivers installed by envy un xubuntu 8.10 are not compatible with with 9.04 and so on, so is there a way to get this card working with 3d acceleration21:09
diego453686sorry it was cut off I mean that driver of ati mobility radeon x1400 are not compatible with 9.05 and so on21:09
* likemindead dreads ATI...21:10
charlie-tcadidn't have a 9.05. We have 9.04 and 9.10 after 8.1021:10
diego453686sorry 9.04 a finger mistake21:10
Sysinewest is 9.1021:10
diego453686yes karmic koala21:11
likemindeadHave you tried 9.10, diego453686?21:11
diego453686yes21:12
likemindeadhttp://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1214858&highlight=radeon+x140021:12
charlie-tcaI don't think 9.10 uses envy21:12
diego453686I know the problem but not the solution, ubuntu 9.04 and foward uses EXA instead of XAA21:14
lightaHi21:14
Pres-GasHello, lighta21:14
likemindeadAhoy.21:14
lighta:), my round 2 versus ttf-msthing...21:15
lighta!21:15
lightawhere can I check instalation log file ?21:17
charlie-tca /var/log/installer is a starting point21:18
lightalike when I used application>add/remove an app and I got an error is there a log file and if yes where is it ?21:18
lightahi charlie ok thx^21:18
charlie-tcayes, the logs are all kept in /var/log21:19
charlie-tcaIf you can't find it anywhere else, you look through /var/log/syslog , but that takes a long time21:20
lightahmm I looking it trought firstly but there like 6 file and a folder, can you be more precise where I should chek or it depend on my app that I add ?21:21
charlie-tcanot really, look at the dates and try to find the one closest to when you did the installation21:21
lightahmm should I open the syslog document with something special ? can't read nothing there21:23
charlie-tcaopen it in mousepad21:26
lightayes I just did it it's fine^21:26
lightadoes it exist a xubuntu sofware who check your hardware and offert you to install some pilote for it ?21:40
likemindeadWhat's a "pilote" ?21:40
lightahmm drivers ?21:41
charlie-tcaApplications -> System -> Hardware Drivers21:42
lightahe only tell me that none onwners drivers is in use on this os21:44
lightawell nevermind I deal it after, so I just dl msttcorefonts_2.6.tar.gz wich is an archive but how do I install it now ?21:45
charlie-tcaCan't install it from synaptic package manager?21:47
charlie-tca!fonts21:47
ubottuFont installation basics here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FontInstallHowto - No fonts in Flash? Install "msttcorefonts" (from !Multiverse), "gsfonts", and "gsfonts-x11". No fonts in MPlayer? see !MPlayer21:47
lightaI don't see it in the synaptic package manager, but as I already got it an archive isn't a simple way to intall it ? (ttfmscorefont)21:59
likemindeadJust run "sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts" in a Terminal.22:01
likemindeadThat's what I did. Easy.22:01
lightahmm actually main probleme is that I can't reach sorceforge.net when I do that22:03
lightawe already try yesterday with charlie-tca to add source and key but it changed nothing22:04
likemindeadSounds like the problem is on their end. You said you had a .deb package? It may want to download the fonts too. :-\22:11
rcscompI have full-sized a window.  How do I un-fullsize it?22:12
likemindeadUh... what program?22:12
rcscomprdesktop22:13
charlie-tcatry F11?22:13
rcscompWell, the problem is that the keys get sent to the remote machine whenever the rdesktop window is active.22:14
likemindeadD'oh...22:14
likemindeadI'd create a shortcut via Settings>Keyboard.22:15
lightacut connection ?22:15
rcscompActually, that made me think of something though.  I don't use rdesktop in full screen mode, because it doesn't work right with dual monitors.  But I just tried ctrl-alt-enter, which made it fullsize, and then ctrol-alt-enter again and now I have the window with a title bar.22:15
charlie-tcaThen you can grab a corner to resize the window22:16
charlie-tcacd ..22:17
rcscompyep, it works now.  It would be better if I could right click the window in the panel and choose "un-fullscreen" or something like that, but this works I guess.22:17
lighta? ubuntu paste server22:22
likemindeadpaste.ubuntu.com22:22
lightahere my mscorefont error : http://paste.ubuntu.com/351989/22:24
lightait's in french (well haf)22:24
likemindeadTry changing servers in Synaptic.22:26
lightapoint is when I try to install a program with packet manager it's always run this configuration for mscorefonts wich provide an error but program look working anyway22:27
lightaok i'll do that22:27
likemindeadOpen Synaptic. Then choose "Settings>Repositories>Download from: Other" and select the best server for your connection.22:28
lightafor sourceforge they all fail22:28
lightais it #synaptic chan that you told me to ask in ?22:30
knomeit is a problem in the ubuntu package.22:33
knomeseemingly.22:33
knomeor a problem with your internet connection22:33
charlie-tcabrb22:33
knomelighta, worksforme.22:35
lightahmm idk knome I can't ping them neither22:35
knomei just reinstalled that package and it works22:36
knomeare you sure sf.net isn't somehow blocked?22:36
VickKleensay I thought when you install Xubuntu it will automatically add windows partitions to fstab, I installed 9.10 and there are no partitions added...22:37
lightagive me a server adress I'll check22:37
knomelighta, see pm.22:38
VickKleenanyone?22:40
uNoMeWhat is the recommended graphics card and processor speed for Xubuntu?22:42
charlie-tcagraphics - any that work with Ubuntu should work22:42
charlie-tcaProcessor - minimum 400MHz22:42
lightaVickKleen, I didn't rally understand your question but yes you should have 2 new partition22:43
uNoMeOkay, I opted for xubuntu because i only have 256mb ram. So im not sure what works with ubuntu.22:43
VickKleenI said I thought Xubuntu will add in Windows partitions automatically when you install Xubuntu to fstab, but it didn22:43
VickKleendidn't...22:43
charlie-tcauNoMe: what speed cpu?22:44
VickKleen256MB of ram isn't going to run Gnome good at all22:44
charlie-tcaXubuntu doesn't run Gnome, though22:44
uNoMehmm pretty good i think22:44
uNoMedef 2Ghz+22:44
uNoMepentium 422:44
VickKleencharlie-tca: I was talking about what uNoMe said... ;p22:45
charlie-tcawith 256MB ram, you should be okay. You are a little short to run big programs like OpenOffice.org22:45
uNoMei ask this because the whole thing feels pretty sluggish.22:45
uNoMeand multi-tasking puts it over the top.22:45
charlie-tcaYou may find you need about a 1GB swap partition/file22:45
charlie-tcait will22:45
VickKleenyeah 256mb in Xubuntu isn't as snappy as it should be22:45
charlie-tcabut you can run Xubuntu22:46
VickKleento many services and background processes going on22:46
uNoMeyeah, it def. runs, just not as well as I would like.22:46
uNoMedo you have a suggestion for an OS that would runner a little snappier?22:46
ron_ouNoMe, don't run any applets in xubuntu, they can be quite hard on old systems. Also, you should consider using fluxbox as a window manager. To be honest, 256MB is the bare minimum required.22:47
ron_ouNoMe, run DSL (Damn Small Linux) and run it it RAM..22:47
ron_oit's a live system...22:48
uNoMeHmm.22:48
ron_oalso, maybe Puppy Linux. But Puppy isn't Debian based.22:48
uNoMeOkay, ill look into that.22:48
uNoMeI dont use it as a primary OS22:48
charlie-tcaactually, 192MB is the absolute minimum ram for Xubuntu22:48
uNoMei mean primary computer22:48
uNoMebut its better than it being essentially a brick under XP22:48
ron_oahh, XP is still a hog.22:49
VickKleenuNoMe: well I hope you can handle working with --> rcconf, install it in Synaptics, then kill off what you don't need, and then in the Control Panel - Session & Startup - Application Autostart uncheck for new hardware then after this you might get a bit more snap22:49
VickKleenI was thinking of trying Absolute it's suppose to be fast22:50
VickKleenuses the Icewm though22:50
uNoMeNot familiar with rcconf22:50
VickKleenwell get familiar then :)22:50
uNoMeheh.22:50
VickKleeninstall then run --> sudo rcconf22:50
uNoMeIs it just like a checkbox GUI type thing?22:50
ron_ouNoMe, the thing is, you *can* even run a linux version on 100MB RAM or less, but the more you ask of your computer, the more your OS will ask of you. That is, you'll need to brush up on some techniques and learn more than the average person.22:50
VickKleenyeah, to kill startup processes22:51
uNoMeYeah.22:51
VickKleenbut you need to know what the startup process are, if you don't, then don't mess with them, the ones you don't just ask what you can and can't do safely22:51
uNoMeWell thanks for your help,22:51
uNoMeill look into that.22:51
uNoMehave to run now.22:51
VickKleenit's a must have, surprised Ubuntu doesn't install it by default, yeah guess they want us all to be noobs22:52
VickKleenLOL22:52
charlie-tcaWhy not just kill them in sessions and startup?22:53
VickKleencause that doesn't list all of them22:54
ron_oVickKleen, hehe, nice tool. :) just d/l and used it.22:54
charlie-tcaI have to check it out, too22:55
ron_othere are tons of tools I don't know about. Just so hard now, because now that I have rcconf, by the time I use it again I'll forget the name. :/22:55
aletheia84i need some help configuring my screen resolution in xubuntu 9.10 can anybody help me???22:55
ron_oaletheia84, the gui tools don't work?22:55
VickKleenrcconf is a standard Debian run tool22:56
aletheia84no my max screen resolution is 800x600 and i need 1024x 76822:56
charlie-tcaSo, is rcconf going to work with upstart?22:56
ron_oso Settings >> Display doesn't list 1024x768?22:56
aletheia84no it doesn't22:56
Ov3rf10wsudo mousepad /etc/X11/xorg.conf22:57
aletheia84it is an older toshiba laptop probably about 9 years old22:57
Ov3rf10win screen section add:SubSection "Display"22:58
Ov3rf10wModes "1024x768"22:58
Ov3rf10wEndSubSection22:58
ron_oaletheia84, configuring xorg.conf may take some knowing.22:58
VickKleenI'm not aware that Upstart can stop services from running at startup like how you do with rcconf22:58
ron_oOv3rf10w, perhaps too it could be his video driver. I've tried that before and it didn't set things right.22:58
aletheia84i have dabbled in it already in the previous versions of ubuntu but in 9.10 there is no xorg.conf file22:59
ron_oaletheia84, there is too..22:59
VickKleenlater guys22:59
ron_otry this: $ mlocate -i xorg.conf22:59
ron_oit will show you where anything is.23:00
ron_o $ mlocate -i23:00
aletheia84what do you mean show me where anything is??23:01
ron_o"mlocate -i" is a search mechanism... if you can't find something, then use it and you'll see.23:02
ron_othe switch " -i " is to make sure it ignores caps.23:03
aletheia84do i need to put anything in the terminal after mlocate -i23:03
aletheia84??23:03
ron_osure.... what you are searching for. :)23:03
aletheia84I'm sorry I'm a total newbie to linux23:03
ron_omlocate -i xorg.conf      .... will do just fine.23:03
ron_othat's ok.23:03
aletheia84what do i do after i locate the xorg.conf file?23:04
ron_oyou have to be root and modify like Ov3rf10w suggested. And by all means, make a backup first.23:05
aletheia84thanks ron_o i will try that as soon as i am able to get back to my computer with linux on it23:06
lightastill have this mscorefont error : http://paste.ubuntu.com/351989/ when I use the depository to add prog even after I put the font manually https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Fonts.23:52
lightaBut font are working fine so how just I take this out ?23:52
MisioHi, does anyone know why thunar doesn't displays OpenOffice file icons?23:59
