MisioOk, I will survive without them :)00:03
Sachse_SiechtumHello folks00:05
Sachse_SiechtumI need some help.00:07
charlie-tca__!help00:11
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)00:11
VickKleensay isn't xubuntu suppose to have /etc/X11/xorg.conf after the installation of Xubuntu? I'm running this on an old box that's going to use vesa, but there isn't any xorg.conf, so not sure X got setup correct00:13
lightahow does I remove ttf-mscorefronts-installer from symantic ?00:13
VickKleenI tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but it didn't do anything, then I booted into recovery mode to try and run it as root, still nothing00:14
Sachse_Siechtumok. I have a problem. I use xubuntu karmic koala. I have the nvidia drivers installed....and on every start I login, and the screen goes black and then I'm back at the login screen.00:14
Sachse_Siechtumafter several tries I finally manage to login.00:14
Sachse_Siechtumthe number differs...sometimes I need 5 tries sometimes 20...00:15
Sachse_Siechtumautomatic login doesnt work too...00:16
VickKleenuninstall the drivers and try another version to see if that helps00:16
Sachse_SiechtumI tried ...I used to have version 185 active...now I have version173 active....no change...not even sure, if the driver is the cause...00:17
VickKleenlook at the logs00:18
Sachse_Siechtumwhere do I find them?00:19
VickKleen---> open a terminal ---> cd /var/log/00:20
VickKleenthen00:20
VickKleensudo nano dmesg00:20
VickKleenif nothing in there then:00:20
VickKleensudo nano messages00:21
VickKleenif nothing in there then:00:21
VickKleensudo nano Xorg.0.log00:21
VickKleenhopefully in one of them you'll get an error about booting in00:21
VickKleenactually CHECK Xorg.0.log first00:21
Sachse_Siechtum.just a moment...00:22
VickKleenSachse_Siechtum: so you don't have to dig through the whole thing, check just the last 20 lines like this00:26
VickKleen----> tail -n 20 Xorg.0.log00:26
Sachse_Siechtumok00:26
VickKleenbut if there is nothing there increase the number from like 20 to 3000:26
Sachse_Siechtumxorg.0 is empty00:26
Sachse_Siechtumnano dmesg is huge.00:26
VickKleenmy bad, look to see if your Xorg file is just Xorg.log is all00:27
VickKleentype ---> ls00:27
Sachse_Siechtumok00:27
Sachse_Siechtumwhat do I type to get out of the text editor?00:27
VickKleenin nano ctrl x00:27
VickKleenat the bottom of nano screen shows the prompts the ^ means ctrl00:29
Sachse_Siechtumok got it :-)00:29
Sachse_Siechtumxorg.log is empty too...checking nano messages00:29
VickKleenso you have xorg.log?00:30
VickKleenyou've never logged in before to xubuntu?00:30
Sachse_Siechtumdunno..there is no text in it00:30
VickKleencause if you had then the log should be full00:30
Sachse_Siechtumhmm...00:30
VickKleenmake sure you type 'sudo'00:31
VickKleenhehe00:31
VickKleensudo nano Xorg.log00:31
Sachse_SiechtumI got text in messages00:31
VickKleenk00:34
VickKleenbut have you ever logged in before?00:34
Sachse_Siechtumxorg.log is empty.00:34
Sachse_Siechtumyes00:34
Sachse_Siechtumas root and with my username00:34
Sachse_Siechtumin the login screen00:34
Sachse_SiechtumJan  6 00:49:51 jurek-desktop Thunar: Trash directory /media/3CE8AB8BE8AB424E/.Trash-1000 exists, but didn't pass the sec$00:36

Sachse_Siechtum??00:36
Sachse_Siechtumhmm...random00:36
VickKleennot sure about those entries00:36
VickKleenlooks like something to do with trash is all00:36
Sachse_Siechtumso the trash function might cause the login problem?00:37
Sachse_Siechtumbecause I got this message several times in a row00:37
Sachse_Siechtumand I got this: Jan  6 00:46:48 jurek-desktop kernel: [   84.268563] ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HW, fallbac$00:38
Sachse_SiechtumJan  6 00:46:50 jurek-desktop kernel: [   85.113799] agpgart-nvidia 0000:00:00.0: AGP 3.0 bridge00:38

VickKleentrash I doubt it, but never know00:40
VickKleenthat ondemand could be more of a problem actually00:40
Sachse_SiechtumI think so too00:40
VickKleenthat's to help with cpu scaling and if not working then well not sure, but don't see why that would stop X from booting00:40
Sachse_SiechtumI have no clue what that message means, btw.00:40
Sachse_Siechtumstarted using Xubuntu 2 Months ago.00:40
VickKleenpossibly that the scaling isn't supported on your cpu is all00:41
VickKleendo you have the two latest kernels installed?00:41
VickKleen14 & 1600:42
Sachse_Siechtumoh yeah...before it goes into login screen I see a message shortly...something with...splash....1600x1400 failed00:42
Sachse_Siechtumyes00:42
VickKleenthat fail is ok00:42
Sachse_Siechtumok00:42
VickKleentry booting the other kernel00:42
Sachse_Siechtumwell I had this problem the other kernel also...00:42
VickKleenok00:42
VickKleenbecause you are at the login I suspect it's the video is all00:43
VickKleenI know in Ubuntu you can run this to reconfigure X at least in Kola you could, for Karmic not sure00:44
VickKleendpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg00:44
Sachse_Siechtumwhat does that command do?00:44
VickKleenI tried that in xubuntu and it did nothing00:44
Sachse_Siechtumok a moment...00:44
VickKleenfor configuring X if you need to reconfigure it00:44
Sachse_Siechtumoh I have compiz and cairo dock installed...00:45
VickKleencompiz could be causing a problem00:45
VickKleendo you have /etc/X11/xorg.conf00:45
=== rr72 is now known as rr72_

VickKleenthen see if you can login with that, nv is the default X driver for nvidia00:49
Sachse_Siechtumdamn I cant save it....00:50
VickKleensudo nano xorg.conf00:50
VickKleenLOL00:50
Sachse_SiechtumI just wanted to do that *g*00:51
VickKleenyou have to sudo all the time to gain root access00:51
Sachse_Siechtumyeah I know what sudo means.....I read about it....temp root rights :-)00:51
Sachse_Siechtumok done.....00:52
Sachse_Siechtumreboot?00:52

Sachse_Siechtumwell it is saved....00:56
Sachse_Siechtumbuilt?00:56
charlie-tca__sorry, meant that for VickKleen00:57
Sachse_Siechtumah ok00:57

Sachse_SiechtumI see00:59
Sachse_Siechtumso the xorg.conf is not used by Xubuntu when it boots?01:00
DKre8ive1anyone here know what setting I have to put in Mplayer prefrences for audio and video on a ps3 xubuntu 9.10 install01:00
VickKleenso what's the replacement now for xorg.conf, how is the stuff loaded?01:00
charlie-tca__It is all automatic loading. There is no replacement.01:01
Sachse_Siechtumok so I gonna reboot now.01:01
Sachse_Siechtumright?01:01
Sachse_Siechtumok brb01:04

Pres-Gastavasti, you could try blueman http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/blueman and http://blueman-project.org/15:13
R4vI'm trying to install xubuntu on a 2gig usb key.15:14
Pres-Gastavasti, gigolo also seems to do obex connections and should already be installed15:14
R4vSo i can save files on it, updatet he software i want, remove what i don't, etc.15:14
R4vis this the right thing:15:15

tavasti'Using gconf config backend'15:58
Pres-Gashmmmm...that was the debug output, tavasti?16:05
Pres-GasI would say that either gconf needs to be modified or update-alternatives needs to be used.16:06
al2candHi, I would like to know if it is possible to install a wireless router WRT120N from linksys on my xubuntu?16:19
tavastiPres-Gas, I started blueman-applet from command-line, and when I say 'browse device' that appears on terminal16:36
geniial2cand: Since it has a web-based control panel, I'd hazard "yes". Plug it in wired first time, configure it thru the it's control panel for the wifi setup, etc16:41

Pres-GasI like a nice, trim file manager17:51
Airrishi19:25
Ov3rf10whi Airris19:26
Airrisum, I just had a hopefully quick question, assuming that I can get this computer to boot properly again, how do I find the error log or what not for ubuntu. Something is occasionally causing this other computer not to boot properly and I want to try and figure out what's up19:28
AirrisIt's a computer I salvaged out of electronic recycling so I wouldn't be surprised if there's more hardware elements that I need to replace :P19:29
TheSheep /var/log/* generally19:29
Airrisah. K19:30
ron_o /var/log/messages   and I had to initiate bootlogd19:31
Airrisat least recovery mode still boots so I have options *starts to tinker*19:34
Airriswoh. ok, there's a lot of logs in here, any idea which one i should be looking at? It gets to the xubuntu mouse, then near the end of it quickly throws some kind of message then the screen goes black and the system just sits there. If I could just read whatever that was saying it'd probably clear this up19:37
likemindeadAirris, can you "Alt+Ctrl+F2" to a command line? If so, I'd do that & then run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to see if it sorts out your problem.19:39
Airrisi can give that a shot.19:40
Airrishmm, also. note to self: "cat messages" = useless idea :P19:40
Airrisrunning those commands presently. It looks like it did find some things to update19:46
Airrisupdates done: hmm. it can normal boot to a commandline out of recovery mode, but still that black screen problem for a completely regular boot. This time it did not appear to throw any kind of message before the black screen19:52
benchik hello19:57
Airrishi19:57
Airrisright, ok now onto ron's suggestion, turning on bootlogd and seeing if that generates any useful feedback19:57
benchikso... Xubuntu is less light than Ubuntu. Has Xubuntu lost its' edge?19:57
Airrishuh?19:57
* likemindead thinks benchik is quite mistaken.19:59

benchiklikemindead: well when i check RAM usage, Xubuntu uses same or more than Ubuntu20:01

Airris*all sorts20:11

benchikOv3rf10w: actually i googled and found several posts of people stating what i said20:11
Ov3rf10wMost people today do not know what is Xubuntu :D20:12
Airriscan I interrupt for a sec, still not sure how to get bootlogd to keep running after i reboot20:13
Airriswell not keep running i guess, but have it start up when i reboot20:13
benchiki see20:13
benchikdidn't check one against the other out of the box20:14
benchikanother thing:20:14
benchiki was wondering whether to upgrade to 10.04 alpha, since i have my laptop as a production system. depending how stable is the alpha (relatively)20:15
Ov3rf10w....20:15
Ov3rf10wi don't know20:16
Ov3rf10w:D20:16
Airrisalways good to be honest20:16
Ov3rf10wi use 9.04 :D20:17
Airrishmm, possible alternative solution, i'm in the commandline mode, is there a way to start up xcfe from here? I'm starting to suspect the problem might be with running the gui20:17
Airrisso if I just turn logging on then try and turn that on, it might bug out and I can catch the error messages since i'll have previously ran bootlogd20:18
benchikOv3rf10w: i use 8.0420:19
Ov3rf10wvery old :D20:20
Ov3rf10w9.04 is the much better20:20
Ov3rf10wi tried karmic but don't like it20:21
* petsounds agrees20:21
Airrishmm, i'm running karmic20:22
Airriswhat don't you like about it20:22
Ov3rf10wall20:22
Ov3rf10wxD20:22
Ov3rf10wlot of bugs20:22
Airrisother than the problems i'm having which i think are more this computers fault than the software, I haven't found anything disagreeable20:22
Airrislike I said: this is a salvaged computer, I'm expecting that this problem is due to a hardware failure, I just need to figure out *what* is failing :P20:22
Airrishehe20:23
Ov3rf10w:D20:23
Airrisit's really hard to narrow that down too since it only bugs out like this erratically20:23
Airrisif i change some of the parts around it might boot up right20:23
Airrisbut there's no telling if it just decided to boot up correctly that time and would have worked without any part changing :P20:23
Airrishuh, that is *wierd* ok so I figured out on my own how to turn on the GUI, and it worked just fine. Perhaps lets see if it boots completely normally if i restart now20:25
Airrisit's back to booting again *shrug*20:26
Airrisdrat. I can't diagnose this problem anymore then until it starts to break again :P20:26
Airrisalthough: theory based on symptoms. I remember when we were trying to get this computer to run a knoppix live cd (to see what was on the harddrive before i blanked it), knoppix kept having problems recognizing the display mode. Now we have the apparent thing that when this computer decides to not boot, it can boot commandline but not a normal boot with the GUI.20:29
AirrisThis computer has some integrated graphics that might be a little funky and perhaps xubuntu can't reliably handle it or something???20:29
Airrisjust a guess until i can find some way to confirm it20:29
knomeAirris, try the live cd20:38
Airrisit seems to be taking quite some time to consider the live cd20:53
Airrisand now appears to have hung up20:55
Airrishmmm20:55
Airrisand we're back to the same problem if i try and boot it up normally21:00
Airrishuh.21:00
Airrisand yet if i go in through recovery mode, then do the normal boot option and turn on the gdm manually21:06
