[00:03] sound works. thanks for your hint, i will try to install the graphic card first. [00:04] well, good luck [00:48] marc__: you got desktop? [01:03] I am uber confused. Is Ubuntu Studio a whole separate install from ubuntu? [01:10] I just want to use my interface in ubuntu without doing a reinstall... [01:10] :( [01:13] * RubbberDucky cries a lil [01:14] Hey everyone, I was here last night trying to figure out how to record what I'm hearing in hydrogen into audacity...or any program that will allow me to do so [01:14] I've been having some issues === JTA_ is now known as JTA_movie-time [04:32] /c/c === JTA_movie-time is now known as JTAway_ [07:29] Hey guys, is there a meta package for ubuntustudio? [07:32] Nevermind my newbie question found the docs ;) [07:33] Hmm, is there an "industry-standard" audio interface to use with ubuntu studio? [07:38] rage_: plenty of audio interfaces will work with ubuntu, what sort of thing are you looking for? [07:40] rage_: lots of PCI sound cards etc work well these days, along with USB & firewire external audio interfaces [07:41] but do check before you buy one that it is well supported [07:41] for external audio interfaces, from what I've read, probably USB interfaces are generally better supported than firewire ones [07:42] I'm thinking of getting an edirol/cakewalk UA-25EX for example, which I understand to be well supported [07:43] ok cool, I've had a really quick look at some of the m-audio stuff [07:43] I would be looking for something with at least 2 1/4" jacks with phantom power [07:43] yeah, some of the m-audio devices are definitely supported, but if you're thinking of buying a particular one then do some googling to see how others have got on with it on Linux first [07:44] if it works on other Linux distros then you should be fine in ubuntu too [07:44] ok, is there usually just a kernel module to compile and load? [07:45] hehe, its been awhile since I have compiled a linux kernel [07:46] for usb audio interfaces, they are mostly covered by the alsa usb modules which you will already have [07:46] so you wouldn't likely need to do any kernel compiling [07:46] http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-MAudio [07:47] that looks like a list of which m-audio devices are supported by the current alsa usb drivers [07:47] oh, and some pci ones in there too [07:49] cool, thanks :) [07:49] np [07:49] I'll have to do some research [20:54] hi, can somebody give me a hint on how to get midi running. i read that there's a problem with pulseaudio but i'm stuck. (ubuntustudio 9.04) [20:55] hmmm [20:56] im in the middle of something for a bit marc__ if you can hang :) [20:56] OH [20:56] #opensourcemusicians too [20:57] no problem [21:03] DUDE [21:03] my girlfriend and i are buying a house :) [21:04] in the middle of that kind of thing [21:04] ANYWAYS marc__, have you used jack? [21:11] yep, i can see the ports listed in the connection kit [21:12] OH [21:12] awesome [21:12] well, have you gotten sound from other software? [21:12] through jack? [21:14] just kill pulse and be done with it ;) [21:16] jack works fine [21:17] SO, whats not working? [21:17] just midi in general [21:17] getting starte? [21:17] started* [21:18] you could try zynaddsubfx [21:18] its a synth with sounds [21:18] i have trouble running it in real-time and theres a new version [21:18] i just dont hear anything [21:18] i tried with rosegarden [21:18] OK [21:19] yeah, rosegarden doesnt have any sounds [21:19] killall -9 pulseaudio will bring timidity down: [21:19] timidity: pcm_pulse.c:361: pulse_write: Assertion `pcm->stream' failed. [21:19] Aborted [21:19] it sends midi data [21:19] if you hear sound otherwise when using jack, i dont think you have a pulse issue [21:21] i didnt suppose so too, just googled and saw that pulse caused some problems [21:21] yeah, and it does [21:21] but, i think it would be hanging up all your audio [21:21] taking over your sound device altogether [21:21] not letting jack have it [21:23] but, i think you just need a software sound module [21:39] ok, i have to admit i made two errors [21:39] well, whats it look like? [21:40] 1. when i killed pulse the front sound was somehow muted [21:40] on my lenovo this means i hear nothing through my headphones [21:41] 2. i tried around with timidity -iA -Os [21:41] you can see the timidity input ports [21:42] and if "-Os" is changed to "-Oj", jack will also get some output ports for your system :) [21:44] ok, thanks for taking your time. hope i wont bother you too much in future [21:49] hmm [21:50] i unfortunatly dont have a lot of experience with MIDI or internal sound card configurations [22:28] bye [23:15] hey all [23:16] using heron hardy... trying to find out how to get my RALink USB wifi adapter to work so i can get on the net with my desktop and give my sister back her vista laptop.. [23:17] i rebooted... not sure where to find out if Ubuntu sees the RALink usb adapter [23:19] i went to Network Settings - unlocked network settings - then selected wireless connection and clicked proerties.. so now I'm in the wlan0 properties window and not sure what to do [23:20] if you have wlan0 and you only have 1 wifi card it works [23:20] though,, not sure how to help you more [23:20] i don't use gnome [23:20] try #ubuntu [23:21] o.k. thanks
