[18:04] Sound software, what works, what would anyone here recommend? === ubottu is now known as ubott2 [22:41] heya [23:02] so a friend wants me to build him a sound studio, i love ubuntu in general and was wondering if there was a point in playing around with this studio fork thingy. whats the fork about? [23:40] hey trask [23:41] sup holstein, how deep are you in this project? [23:41] just a user [23:41] lots deeper than me :P [23:42] you can always just make a normal ubuntu instalation into ubuntu studio [23:42] ubottu: vanilla [23:42] To install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation [23:42] so whats the reason u run the studio fork instead of just the apps in regular buntu? [23:42] well.. [23:43] as far as i can tell, ubuntu studio is just a meta-package [23:43] or something like that [23:43] you can do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-studio [23:43] ubuntustudio-audio i meann [23:43] mean* [23:44] and you get a bunch of apps packaged togeter [23:44] from the ubuntu repo [23:44] yeah this install is now 3+ years old, sounds like the best way to mess with it [23:45] debian seems indestructable [23:45] the reason i see that there is a seperate project is the real time kernel for expample [23:45] you wouldnt want a regualr user to have to deal with that [23:46] nor, would you want to give someone access to an audio distrobution [23:46] that did not at least have a clear way to intall, and use a real time kernel [23:46] why not? remote access is neat from time to time [23:48] i run a regular vanilla karmic install that i installed the ubuntustudio packages i need onto [23:49] the ububuntustudio-audio ubntustudio-audio-plugins and linux-rt [23:49] see also... [23:49] ubottu: grub2 [23:49] GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager in Karmic. For more information and troubleshooting on GRUB2 please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2 [23:50] any need for grub? whenever i slam on another kernel build it appears in my boot menu :P [23:50] cool [23:51] grub2 in karmic can be hidden by default [23:51] i just link to that in case :) [23:52] definately a part of linux that was hard back long time ago [23:54] gonna scroll up and do those apt-gets
