evand now we'll never know00:02
ubuntu_I used the usb-creator to make a livecd USB stick. When it boots, USB stick is mounted as /cdrom with permissions 755. I can't seem to change it to 777. Could this be because of the mounted fmask=0022 and dmask=0022? If so, how do I change that?00:54

BobPaulIt is mouted as rw and I can write to /cdrom when root, but I'd be nice to have write access as the user, since this is where most files I'd be using will be located00:57

Thwapphello everyone..06:17
ThwappI'm hoping there's someone online who may be able to help me figure out a Ubuntu 9.10 installation issue with my desktop PC.06:18
Thwappis there a way to install Ubuntu with a minimal cd or USB drive that downloads all the packages off the internet?  I'd prefer to run 64 bit on my desktop, 32 bit on my notebook, and by some miracle, I managed to get the Netbook remix installed onto my MSI Wind U100-257ca (upgraded to 2gb ram and a 500 gb hd...)  Both my desktop (EVGA 780i SLI MB based) and my notebook (Acer Aspire intel core 2 duo based) have crashed on install..06:27

ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate06:36
persiaThwapp: Try reading about netboot installs in the install documentation.  You may find this matches your original request, although be warned it's less simple than the other methods.06:37
Thwapppersia: I've read through the netboot documentation seems to expect me to have GRUB installed..  which I don't because I can't get the initial installation to go past 22%.  I have 3 versions downloaded..  the 64 bit one (what I wanted to experiment with on my desktop), the 32 bit one (that I figured would be a good experiment on my notebook - the afore mentioned notebook), and the netbook remix (which I managed to successfully inst17:25
persiaHrm.  I'm not sure about that then.17:26
persianetboot is the only way I know to download packages at install time, rather than preinstall time.17:26
Thwappit keeps claiming an I/O error...17:26
ThwappI've burned prolly 4 or 5 copies of both the x64 and the x86 versions..  get the same issue...17:27
Thwappwhen I built the desktop, I made sure it was 64 bit capable..  used an em64t cpu, got a solid Mobo for it..17:27
Thwappmade sure I have solid, error free ram...17:28
ThwappThis isn't  the first time I've ever installed Linux before, nor is it the first time I've ever installed Ubuntu either, however it is the first time I've ever installed Ubuntu on my desktop....17:29
ThwappI have read the documentation on installs, and until I came in here and got the pointer to the page about install difficulties, I hadn't found that one yet..  So I've read it...  All the netboot installs seem to want GRUB installed.  I know how to USE Grub to boot an OS, but I don't know how to Install it yet.  not on it's own, not at all..  if it's part of an install, that's usually not too bad...17:31
persiaHrm.  You're sure about your optical drive?17:31
ThwappI have 2 of them...17:31
Thwappboth IDE..  and both working just fine in Windoze..17:32
persiaHrm.  I'm not sure.17:33
Thwappon my netbook, I have an external Samsung USB slimline DVD burner...  I even tried to boot it off that one!!17:33
persiaTHis channel tends to be quiet on the weekends though.  Have you talked to the folk in #ubuntu about installation?17:33
Thwappactually, no..  that's a good idea...17:33
ThwappI shall take a peek in there shortly!!  thanks!!17:34
ThwappAnd thanks for your time!  I do appreciate it!!17:34
persiaGood luck.17:34
dhillon-v10cjwatson: can you have a look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/215972 possible to close that bug because GRUB doesn't make the menu.lst file anymore23:58
