IzinucsIs there a way to put a program shortcut on a panel.00:43
apersonIzinucs, yep, just add a launcher00:48
Izinucsaperson: as a widgit?00:48
apersonIzinucs, a widget, yes00:48
Izinucsaperson: that would be Lancelot?00:49
wizkodermaco: I entered my email and password like on the page. Does the plasmoid have problems with that? Mean do I have to use the username?00:49
macoyeah use the username00:49
apersonIzinucs, no, just drag an app from your menu00:49
Izinucsaperson: ah so easy I missed it.. :/00:50
Izinucsaperson: I was expecting something more like.. right mouse click .. add launcher.. enter program name and find appropriate Icon .. etc etc etc00:50
apersonIzinucs, there is a widget for launchers (everything is a widget, btw)00:51
apersonlancelot is not that though00:51
apersonI'd take some time and go through your available widgets and see what you can add :)00:51
Izinucsk.. got 'em all configured.. fast and easy.. thanks aperson.  I've looked at the widgets.. some are easy to know what they are .. others are a bit more mysterious.. new to kde but been on gnome for 5 years..00:52

FanfareHi Folks, Q: I'd like to check my xorg.conf to tune my nvidia someone know a good resource with hints?01:10
apersonFanfare, why are you editing it manually?01:12
apersonnvidia-settings should be able to do everything01:12
Fanfareaperson: i usually have twinview enabled... nvidia-settings creates xorg.conf. i plan to record some kde 4.4 desktop effects so i just want to check its really set optimal...01:14
Fanfarefor the recordings i have to set twinview of and set a low resolution...01:14
apersonFanfare, nvidia-settings can do all of that01:14
apersonI personally would find it easier to go through that than editing the file directly01:15
Fanfareaperson: my initial xorg.conf was created using nvidia-settings, thought there might be some tricks...01:15
apersonNothing really that it can't do for you01:16
apersonif you want to do some hackish things, sure01:16
apersonanything else, you're just making things harder for you01:16
Fanfareaperson: ok, well just something that might be common but not set by nvsettings ...01:17
apersonthere isn't really anything you *can't* set, unless you have some really specific requirements and your hardware isn't properly detected01:18
apersonbut that generally isn't the case01:18
Fanfareok, then i simply use nvidia-settings to creade my recording xorg.conf... easy enough :-)01:19
apersonthe one thing I had to hand edit for01:20
apersonwas to use twinview and xinerama01:20
apersonwhich you generally don't do01:20
Fanfarebut that can do nvidea-settings too...01:20
apersonI've never been able to use both at the same time01:21
apersonie: have one big desktop across two monitors01:21
Fanfareaperson: ? well, i use it atm... GeForce 570001:22
apersonI have a 860001:22
apersonFanfare, does your logon screen appear on one screen, both, or in the middle?01:23
Fanfareaperson: and nvidia-settings cant set your xorg to use twinview? make your desktop like 2x1280x1024?01:23
apersonit can01:23
Fanfareit apeares on the primary monitor01:23
apersonmine appears in between both01:23
apersonbecause I have one big 'span'01:23
apersonyou have just twinview01:24
FanfareI'll post my xorg.conf!?01:24
apersonI know what you have01:24
apersonyou *don't* have it set up as I have mine01:24
apersonyou have a desktop with a display added on, it's treated as two monitors01:25
apersonmy two is treated as one01:25
Fanfareiirc if i move my mouse to the secondary monitor before the login apears its shown there...01:25
Fanfaremine too, at least in krandrtray...01:26
apersonyeah, you're just using twinview01:26
Fanfareso, whats the benefits in your setup then?01:26
apersoncompiz works on both screens01:27
Fanfarea ok...01:27
apersonand you can drag windows back and forth with no problems01:27
* avihay is searching for a music player01:27
Fanfarei dont use compiz but kwin effects on both...01:27
Fanfarewell, i can do too...01:28
Fanfareavihay: not happy with amarok?01:28
avihayno, too many stupid bugs01:28
Fanfareavihay: hope u reported them then...01:29
avihayit sometimes stops playing after songs, and the only way to make it work is to select another song from the playlist01:29
apersonyes, but did you report it?01:30
avihayI can't reproduce the bug, so I don't see too much point in reporting it01:30
avihaythe way I stopped the bug from happening this time was to let amarok do nothing for 6 hours (or in other words, I was away from the computer, and no it's solved)01:32

rethusiconmefisto: interesting... why in dolphin... doesn't this are completly own apps?09:00

iconmefistomfed: if you don't want to create log files, you could do it like this: kate 2>/dev/null09:13
rethusbefore i could only just click on the Icon in front off a new message to mar it as readed, or on a readed message to mar it as unreaded... now i have to use kontext >> mark message >> unreaded.09:13
rethusi wonder why this great features away?09:13
iconmefistorethus: there is a way to change that. I'll see if I can find it09:16
mfediconmefisto: I know but I would like to avoid to call the redirection explicitly each time I run a kde app from konsole09:17
rethusiconmefisto: i have try to modify the template, but didn't found a solution to get the icons clickable (some work... like thj Icon Importent) but other not09:17
iconmefistomfed: if you did do it, it might have unintended consequences. eg, scripts may not echo text to console when they need to and redirect the messages instead09:18
mfedI suppose there should be some method to change logging policy for all kde apps but i can't google it09:18
rethusmfed: write a small bash-script and give the application as parm1... into the script u do something like09:19
rethus!#/bin/bash09:19

rethusor use $1 >> $209:19

iconmefistomfed: or you could make an alias. eg   alias qu="2>/dev/null"    so you could start programs like this: kate qu  (qu for "quiet"). I think that would work, and not to much to type09:21

* shadeslayer waits for a 10 second boot on 10.1011:28
shadeslayeror on 10.0411:28
alvinWell, in that case, I will start paying Canonical in a few weeks. There are some serious bugs in the boot process, and if everyone is using it, it does not make sense to switch distribution to find something more stable. (Don't get me wrong. I think upstart is a good idea, but it's not a finished product)11:29
alvinOn desktops, 10 second boot is nice, but on servers you want a successfull boot. Ever seen a Solaris server boot? Takes 10 minutes11:30
shadeslayeralvin: thats why the ISO's are alpha and not the final thing, upstart was introduced in 9.10 but currently just mimics sysinitv11:31
shadeslayeralvin: :o11:31
alvinI'm under the impression that 9.10 wasn't tested very well. Samba servers do not start at boot, NFS/CIFS mounts do not come up at boot. libvirt-bin can't start NFS shares at boot, A separate /boot partition will halt your boot, NFS mounts 'can' halt your boot, grub (beta!) can crash your boot.... All in all, Karmic is currently a horrible experience at work.11:32
alvinI administer a network with Kubuntu desktops. All users are using a shared /home. Upgrading was a nightmare. (still is. I stopped upgrading after 10 machines.)11:33
shadeslayeralvin: hehe.... well i think 10.04 will be good in all those areas11:34

EagleScreenrolsworth: less than 32 bits16:58
rolsworthmaybe i should stick with 32bit then16:58
rolsworthi have 8gb in my pc16:58
* shadeslayer thanks god that he exported his gpg keys just before this crisi16:58
EagleScreenyes may be you should16:58
shadeslayer*crisis16:58
EagleScreenrolsworth: 8 GB are enought, a Kubuntu fresh installation uses 2.2  GB16:59
rolsworthi was thinking about trying 64bit since i have so much ram17:00
EagleScreenrolsworth: if you like KDE and you find problems with Kubuntu, try OpenSuse out17:00
rolsworthbut from what i hear ubuntu 64bit isn't that stable17:00
EagleScreenrolsworth: how much RAM?17:00
rolsworth8gb17:01
kubianrolsworth: i've been using 64-bit for the last 4yrs17:01
EagleScreenyou may use your 8 GB of RAM with 32 bits + kernel-PAE17:02
EagleScreen64 bits is stable except for some few thinks17:02
kubianrolsworth: if u have 64-bit box cpu use 64-bit..much faster17:02
caerbannoganyone here uses omnibook drivers?17:03
EagleScreenfor instance, flash is not very stable in 64 bits, and in general, there is still more software for 32 bits then for 6417:03
kubianEagleScreen: 64bit flash has been very stable for the past 2 years17:04
EagleScreenfor instance, you can download Adobe packages for its website only for 32 bits, or flash package only for 32 bits, but you should find almost all in the repositories for 64 bits17:04
caerbannogwell, at least 64 is actively developed, soon 32-bit platforms will be in the past, and 8bit=)17:04
EagleScreenkubian: it isn't yet for me17:04
caerbannogbut now if u use 64 bit platform, there really still are some problems17:06
EagleScreenmany libraries or software is not really prepared for 64 bits, like wine, flash... and you need to use and install the 32bits libraries too plus some wrapper in order to software work17:06
kubianEagleScreen: Adobe labs has 64-bit flash for the longest time. it uses the same code as 32-bit stable17:06
EagleScreenwine and many other studd need 32 bit libraries plus wrappers, and some day you may need a package for some third party application and find only 32 bits packages17:08
shadeslayercinex: ok ive decided that im going to have a seprate /home17:08
shadeslayercinex: ill be installing dev packages and stuff..17:09
EagleScreenbut companies and developers only will be forced to develop for 64 bits architecture when users switch to 64 bits, if we never switch, they won't never be forced17:09
shadeslayeranyone who has some opinions?17:09
kubianshadeslayer: go aheadgo ahead17:10
shadeslayerkubian: i mean, what size should the partitions be :P17:10
kubianshadeslayer: i sue 10g for my root and then have about 20 for my home..or depends on how much you have and what you store in your home17:11
kubian*use17:11
shadeslayerhmm17:12
shadeslayerlooks goo17:12
shadeslayerd17:12
shadeslayerkubian: ext4 or ntfs for /home ?17:14
EagleScreenext4, ntfs is not for /home17:14
shadeslayerok17:14
EagleScreenis not possible to use a ntfs for /home without a lot of problems17:15
kubianshadeslayer: you can even have separate large data partitions which you can link to your home/Music | Dowloads | Pictures | Documents17:15
shadeslayerok im gonna quit now since i dont want the installer to hog my bandwidth :P17:15
shadeslayerbye and thanks :)17:16

anirban-kdeHello, anyone here?17:43
anirban-kdeHello, is there anybody here? I feel like the traveller in "The Listeners" Poem by Walter De La Mare17:45
shadeslayeranirban-kde: whats the problem?17:45
geniianirban-kde: Best to just ask your question that you require assistance with17:45

anirban-kdeSorry for shouting, to both of you. I was just checking whether anybody was listening or not.17:46
shadeslayerso anything re-producable on a fresh install :)17:46
shadeslayeranirban-kde: theres always somebody around :P17:46
anirban-kdeThnaks Shadeslayer. The problem is related to KPPP.17:46
shadeslayeranirban-kde: ah no idea with that unfourtunately...never had to use it17:47
anirban-kdeSee, I am running Wireless Internet on Photon Plus, a wireless Internet service in India. KPPP is a dialer in KDE, like GNOME-PPP,17:47

anirban-kdeShadeslayer: Thanks17:49
shadeslayeranirban-kde: about using photon plus17:49
anirban-kdeOh, thanks17:49
shadeslayeranirban-kde: you have 9.10 right?17:50
geniiSo conceivably Photon Plus uses some USB adapter which behaves as a dial-in modem and it's not correctly working?17:50
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Sorry, but I have 9.04, not yet upgraded17:50
shadeslayergenii: well ive seen one of those devices adn its a plug and play USB modem and connects over cellphone towers17:51
shadeslayeranirban-kde: found this : http://cityblogger.com/archives/2009/04/09/tata-indicom-photon-and-reliance-netconnect-broadband-on-ubuntu17:51
anirban-kdegenii: No, it is running nicely,17:51
anirban-kdegenii: But only under sudo command.17:51
shadeslayerah,,,17:51
geniishadeslayer: Yes, we have these "Rocket Sticks" that Rogers Communications uses here.17:51
shadeslayergenii: hehe, rocket sticks.... unfourtunately reliance doesnt bundle any software for ubuntu ..17:52
shadeslayeroh found a official forum too...17:52
shadeslayeranirban-kde: http://www.tataindicom.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-1792.html17:52
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Still, we can run both Reliance-Connector and Photon in Ubuntu, using wvdial and G-ppp or KPPP17:53
shadeslayeranirban-kde: yeah i know about that :)17:53
shadeslayeranirban-kde: unfortunately i didnt know about wvdial and KPPP when i introduced my freind to Kubuntu,so i couldnt get his net working :P17:54
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: :) Well then...17:54
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Oh, did you try Google search?17:54
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: I just found this entry a few weeks ago,17:54
shadeslayeranirban-kde: yeah,but everything went over my head....17:55
shadeslayerfortunately he now has a proper wifi connection :)17:55
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Nice,17:55
shadeslayeranirban-kde: anyways you were saying something about using sudo ?17:55
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Yes, the problem is that, only if I run "sudo kppp", it connects to the net, otherwise, it fails17:56
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: USing sudo all the time is risky, since it grants root-rights,17:56
shadeslayeranirban-kde: hmm.. maybe because it requires proper access to the usb device?17:57
shadeslayeranirban-kde: also please use kdesudo with gui apps17:57
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Actually, I configured the device, still it fails.17:57
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Thanks for the KDESUDO advice17:57
shadeslayeranirban-kde: configured the device for what?17:57
UK-DOHello ppl. When I use sudo pppoeconf in Kubuntu  it says nothing found; no modem found But when I start windows PPPoE is there and it's working. How am I gonna update without net :(17:58
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: I am using that for a few days17:58
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: For KPPP, setting the Modem to be /dev/ttyUSB017:59
anirban-kdeThen it works nicely, under "sudo" rights, :)17:59
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Anyway, this is not a problem, just requires to enter the password again and again, :)18:00
UK-DOI tried for bout 1/5 hour. Same drill over and over agin Ethernet cable=Checked, Is connected, ISP=checked network is working fine. What should I do to get it work18:00
shadeslayeranirban-kde: ah thats why... /dev/X has to have root priviliges...18:00
jay_how do i put my card into monitor mode18:00
anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Thanks, understood now,18:00
shadeslayergenii: any idea if we can change the priviliges under /dev/C18:00

anirban-kdeshadeslayer: So, which one do you like more, KDE or GNOME?18:10
UK-DOThanks shadyslayer and anirban. Just one question are dependeciz also included in that deb package ?18:11
shadeslayeranirban-kde: hehe.. KDE is better imo18:11
shadeslayerUK-DO: nope, youll have to download all the listed deps18:12
UK-DOok thanks18:12
anirban-kdeUK-DO, no, they are not. But if you use the Command I gave, then they will be installed automatically18:12

anirban-kdeshadeslayer: Oh, quite nice,18:16
shadeslayerUK-DO: yeah you can do that18:16
anirban-kdeUK-DO, use KGrubEditor18:16
anirban-kdeUK-DO, then it will be easier18:17
UK-DOThanks I will note that18:17
shadeslayerUK-DO: you have karmic or jaunty?18:17
UK-DOKarmic18:18
shadeslayerUK-DO: ah then that will not work18:18
shadeslayerUK-DO: kgrubeditor is only for grub 118:18
geniianirban-kde: If the device behaves like a modem you could use the sudo pppconfig   command to set it up. Under advanced options in there you can add ppp users.18:18
shadeslayerUK-DO: for grub 2 youll need to manually set windows as the first boot option18:19
anirban-kdeRight,18:19

kaddihi, i just got some major kde-updates and now after a reboot my config is completely broken18:40
Mudassarbut where is the MD5 that is provided for this ISO file ?18:40
trakinasSolved!18:40
kaddiis there something i can fix18:40
trakinasI generated a daily report for those days that were missing and now I access them directly on the url if I want to see their traffic.18:41
trakinasthe trouble is that my host split your logs (Im not on a dedicated server) every 2 days, so my files acces/erro.log and log.1 have only yesterday's and today's records. what I did was to tell the script to look into the old files (.2 beyond) and then generate a daily report.18:42
trakinasit generated a file like awstats01201024.txt for those missing days.18:42
trakinasfor example, to access the reports for 24th, I add ?&databasebreak=day&day=24 after awstats.pl (in my case)18:42
Mudassarbrothers, where can I get the md5 checksum for the kubuntu 9.10 that I am downloading ?18:44
