Neil3hey folks, having a strange issue in xubuntu with xfce's compositor turned on, with the display 'tearing' when I move windows, watch video etc. I'm running karmic and my graphics chip is an intel 945gm09:38
Neil3wondering if anyone has any ideas? I've tried looking for a sync to vblank setting in the compositor but i can't find anything, tried using driconf and also xvattr, which shows vblank syncing as enabled and my refresh rate detected properly09:40
TheSheepdo you also get it with metacity?09:45
Neil3not as much09:48
Neil3do you mean metacity as in xfwm with compositing turned off?09:48
TheSheepmetacity as in gnome's window manager09:49
Neil3ah i don't have gnome installed, only xfce09:49
Neil3but i did switch from ubuntu, and can't say i noticed it09:49
TheSheepI'm just wondering if it's xfce's fault09:49
Neil3that was with compiz though, i didn't really use metacity09:49
TheSheepor if the fault is somewhere with the new inte drivers09:50
TheSheepintel*09:50
* Neil3 nods09:52
Neil3I did a bit of digging around and found some mention of this issue in xfce's compositor but with nvidia drivers, not intel09:52
bjorkintoshis there a trick to sorting icons on the xubuntu desktop?09:53
Neil3just had a mess about with it again - it's definitely more noticeable with compositing turned on09:54
bjorkintoshi see nothing under desktop settings or properties.09:55
TheSheepbjorkintosh: you can't do it09:58
TheSheepbjorkintosh: personally I just put the launchers on my panel and keep the desktop empty09:58
bjorkintoshwhy is that so hard to do?09:59
TheSheepbjorkintosh: because xfce is written by only a handful of programmers in their free time09:59
TheSheepbjorkintosh: and there are more important things to fix10:00
Neil3brb gonna try something10:00
TheSheepbjorkintosh: in the next major release of xfce the desktop will use the same code as Thunar, so it will have sorting and everythig10:01
TheSheepbjorkintosh: but that will probably not get included in xubuntu until autumn10:01
bjorkintoshi'm running lucid10:01
bjorkintoshso hopefully, i'll see it before then.10:01
bjorkintoshthanks for the info, TheSheep.10:07
bjorkintoshi thought i wasn't rtfm-ing closely enough at first.10:07
Neil3well i just tried forcing vblank sync in /etc/drirc and restarting x - still tearing when compositing is enabled10:08
TheSheep!bugs | Neil310:11
ubottuNeil3: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs - Bugs in/wishes for the IRC bots (not Ubuntu) can be filed at http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-bots10:11
TheSheepNeil3: can't really help otherwise10:11
Neil3thanks for looking into it TheSheep, it seems its either the intel driver ignoring me or xfce ignoring the driver settings10:12

pogis there a nice file-manager for xfce, or an extention to thunar, so that sftp:/  (ftp, smb) can be used.16:51
Sysifilezilla is pretty nice, i'm not sure if thunar is able to handle remote connections16:52
pogI like xubuntu, it runs also rather good under qemu.16:52
pogactually I also tried nautilus (under lxde), but die extentions seem to work only under gnome.16:54
knomepog, thunar 1.1.0 supports sftp://16:58
pogwhich mail-client do you use under xfce?16:59
knomepog, https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/ppa16:59
pogah... knome16:59
knomei use thunderbird since it can provide all the features i need17:00
pogstrange under ubuntu 9.10 there is tunar 1.0.1.17:04
pogthanks for the hint for upgrading to tunar 1.1.017:10

Cretin hi! im trying to use vnc to connect to my headless ubuntu server. i installed xfce4 as the envirnment and my xstartup is" xfce4-session &" but i get a dbus error when i connect to the display. help?20:05
TheSheepwhat error exactly? did you try googling it?20:07
Cretinyes20:08
Cretinerror connecting to contact settings server20:08
Cretinand it was a connection refused20:08
Cretinwhen the xstartup is "startxfce4" theres no error, but no xfce on the display. i always just see an X cursor on a blank screen20:11
TheSheepanything in .xsessionerrors ?20:12
Cretinyes20:14
Cretinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/365844/20:14
TheSheepCretin: well, it looks self-explanatory20:15
Cretinthen please explain20:15
Cretini can start vncserver as sudo20:16
Cretin*cant20:16
Cretincan i change the permission of that file safely?20:18
TheSheepit's complaining that it cannot write to the /home/ben directory20:19
TheSheepare you running it as ben?20:19
Cretinyes20:19
TheSheepis that directory owned by ben?20:19
Cretinyes20:20
Cretini changed the files permissions20:20
Cretinsame error20:20
TheSheepcan you do 'ls -ald /home/ben' and pastebin the result?20:20
Cretinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/365a848/20:21
Cretinthe xsession-errors hasnt updated20:21
Cretinhttp://stevenharman.net/blog/archive/2008/12/13/vnc-to-a-headless-ubuntu-box.aspx20:23
Cretinthats the tutorial ive been using, but with xfce4 instead of gnome20:23
Cretinand without xrdb or xsetroot. should i do it differently?20:23
CretinTheSheep: just a friendly ping20:30
TheSheepThe Paste you are looking for does not currently exist.20:31
TheSheephmmm20:31
CretinTheSheep: http://paste.ubuntu.com/365853/20:38
TheSheepCretin: I think that xrdb may be needed20:39
Cretini wasnt sure if it was gnome specific. ill try it20:39
TheSheephmm.. if you don't have an .Xresources file, it's actually not needed20:41
TheSheep:/20:41
Cretin nope. still "unable to contact settings server" "failed to cnnect to socket /tmp/dbus-BPNrXcW483: connection refused"20:41
TheSheepdoes that server have dbus installed?20:43
Cretinive never installed it20:43
Cretinor heard of it20:43
Cretinbut i thought since it was refused over timed out, idk.20:44
Cretindbus is already installed20:45
TheSheepCretin: did you try xinit?20:49
TheSheepCretin: also, make sure the dbus is actually running: sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start20:51
Cretin * system message bus already started; not starting.20:51
TheSheephmm...20:52
Cretinand changed the .vnc/xstartup to "xinit &"20:52
Cretinstill gray background with X cursor, no error20:52
TheSheepwhat if you put in that startxfce4 in .xinitrc20:57
TheSheep?20:57
CretinTheSheep: my home doesnt have a .xinit.rc21:00
Cretin.xinitrc21:00
dbdii407Okay. I'm having issues with my Wireless Logitech mouse. After some time, I can't click anywhere21:01
TheSheepCretin: create it21:04
TheSheepdbdii407: anything related in dmesg21:04
TheSheepdbdii407: ?21:04
dbdii407Sorry. I don't know what that is.21:04
TheSheepdbdii407: open a terminal, type 'dmesg | tail' and pastebin the result21:05
TheSheep(after your mouse stopped working, that is)21:05
dbdii407That'll be a while21:05
dbdii407Unknow amount of time. A month?21:05
dbdii407Unknown*21:06
CretinTheSheep: xstartup is "xinit &" .xinitrc is "startxfce4" and still no change, but no error either21:06
Cretinand when .xinitrc is "xfce4-session" theres still no error, which is different than having it in xstartup21:07
TheSheepCretin: ah, I think it should be 'start xfce4-session'21:11
TheSheepCretin: sorry21:11
TheSheepCretin: not start, exec21:12
TheSheepCretin: 'exec xfce4-session'21:12
TheSheepdbdii407: maybe its battery died?21:15
dbdii407Nope21:15
dbdii407I can still use it21:15
dbdii407I just can't /click/21:15
TheSheepthat's strange21:15
TheSheepso it happens about once a month?21:16
dbdii407Sometimes a week too21:16
CretinTheSheep:21:17
Cretinstill nothing21:17
Cretinno error either21:17
TheSheep:/21:18
TheSheepdbdii407: I'd google for it, and if no solution, wait for it to happen and check all possible logs: dmesg, lsusb, xev, xidump21:20
dbdii407I've already googled this for over than 6 months.21:21
dbdii407But I'll keep that in mind21:21
TheSheepactually only dmesg is a log in there, the rest are utility programs for checking your input devices21:22
TheSheepyou also might want to check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log21:22
