JanCnOStahl: with one server there isn't much of a "cloud"...  ;)01:50
JanC(but I guess you know that already, as you're talking about controller & nodes further on)01:51

ChmEarl sudo socat - /dev/pts/1   I can see the boot messages of my kvm guest from the host. Is this a read only tty?03:47
Cappythis might be a very noob question, but i have just completed an install of ubuntu-server, installed webmin and rebooted, now typing http://servername:10000 from another machine on the network, i get an error. also pinging servername tells me the host can not be found04:09
Cappyall my machines have DHCP addresses from my router04:10
ChmEarlCappy, in servername /etc/init.d/apache2 start04:10
Cappyhrmm sorry, for some reason hostnames are recognised. i can get in via the ip address04:11

Cappythanks05:10
nOStahlhow many nodes will you have adam05:10
AdamDVQuite a Few05:10
AdamDVProbably start with 5 or so, expand up to a couple thousand05:11
AdamDVStill working it all out.05:11
AdamDVWe will do shared, vps, and cloud hosting05:11
DanDaregood night gents05:11
nOStahlhow much for vps05:11
AdamDVAs well as web design, a social network, collaboration suite.05:11
swiftguys, what is postfix used for?.. on ubuntu-server?05:11
AdamDVnOStahl: Anywhere from $5/m to $100/m05:11
nOStahlemail05:11
AdamDVswift: Email05:12
swiftok, so postfix running means, the server is a mail server?05:12
AdamDVswift: It is used to accept mail from the internet, and send mail to the internet. It is usualy used in collaboration with dovecot, to deliver mail locally.05:12
nOStahl5 dollars a month for vps access nice05:12
AdamDVYea, I think its a good price.05:12
AdamDVBurstable bandwidth and resources too.05:12
swiftok thanks!!05:12
nOStahlprices comming down for vps cause of cloud now?05:12
AdamDVswift: Not necessarily.05:13
CappyAdamDV, is it safe to go with default options with snort, or should i customise from the start?05:13
AdamDVCappy: No idea, sorry.05:13
CappyAdamDV, np, thanks anyway05:13
AdamDVnOStahl: Actually, I think they will rise.05:13
AdamDVAs people will be using VPS's as nodes.05:13
AdamDVWe offer managed and unmanaged vps hosting.05:13
AdamDVBut, I have to compete with a couple companys, so $5 is pretty god.05:14
nOStahlya05:14
AdamDVSpecs aren't great, but theyre not bad either.05:14
nOStahlcheapest ive seen iis 1905:14
AdamDVhttp://fivebean.com05:14

AdamDVI like linode for the important ones, theyre pretty good.05:14
nOStahlaye05:14
nOStahli hate email server setup05:15
AdamDVI dont mind it05:15
nOStahlyou could make a living just setting up email servers for people lmao05:15
AdamDVYou just have to get used to it05:15
nOStahlaye05:15
AdamDVI like getting the setup working 100%05:15
nOStahllike everything else05:15
AdamDVSpamAssassin trained, dovecot and postfix secured, ssl setup, etc.05:15
AdamDVIts quite a lengthy process.05:15
AdamDVI usually train SA for at least 2 months before making a server live.05:16
AdamDVCoding an Imap client in PHP to round robin accross a bunch of serers is harder, trust me.05:16
AdamDVEspecially when your 14 and have to keep up with school :|05:16
nOStahlahead of the curve05:17
nOStahlkeep with it05:17
nOStahli wasnt into the backend of computers as much when i was younger05:17
nOStahli was building hovercrafts in woodshop05:17
nOStahland catapults heh05:17
AdamDVNice.05:18
AdamDVTried building a hovercraft once.05:18
AdamDVDidn't work out so well.05:18
AdamDVHaha05:18
AdamDVbrb05:18
AdamDVAlright05:20
AdamDVYea, trying to figure out the details of cloud computing and design homebrew software is a challenge.05:20
nOStahlim thinking of setting up my 3 laptops and 1 desktop in the house as a cloud setup05:20
AdamDVAnd I'm debating Debian vs. Ubuntu vs. CentOS (Cuurently using CentOS on all but the mail servers, where I run Debian Lenny)05:21
nOStahlthere all spares heh05:21
AdamDVnOStahl: Couldn't hurt to try.05:21
AdamDVHow do you have all those as spares? ~.-05:21
nOStahli use an eeepc 901 as my main computer now05:22
nOStahlso i have a few newer full size notebooks05:22
nOStahland an older desktop05:22
AdamDVNice05:22
AdamDVI use an aspire one as my main05:22
nOStahltry moblin yet05:22
AdamDVTheyre nice because theyre super portable05:22
nOStahlboots 4 seconds on my 90105:23
AdamDVHavent tried moblin, tried jolicloud.05:23
AdamDVDidn't like it.05:23
AdamDVFelt restricted.05:23
nOStahlaye05:23
AdamDVPrefer a full install.05:23
nOStahlmoblin's still alpha05:23
AdamDVYea05:23
swiftguys, what does 'dmesg' exactly give?05:23
nOStahlbut it'll be nice when its full blown05:23
swifti know it's a kinda log05:23
swiftbut what messages will it display05:23
nOStahlit lets you know what the computers thinking in a ways05:23
AdamDVYea, be nice once it hits beta.05:23
nOStahlie what drive you just plugged in05:24
AdamDVswift: dmesg is basically an action log for the computer.05:24
AdamDVLike:05:24
AdamDV10:10:09 : Found new drive /dev/sda105:24
AdamDV10:10:10 : /dev/sda1 mounted to /media/USBDISK05:24
swiftso, it just displays logs05:24
swift?05:24
AdamDVIt writes to logs, and stdouts to the terminal is optional, yes.05:24
* AdamDV bangs head05:25
AdamDVPhp+Imap+Break=BAD.05:25
swiftthanks!05:25
AdamDVNo problem05:25
AdamDVI'm worried canonical is on the path to the next microsoft05:27
* AdamDV ducks and runs for cover05:27
nOStahlatleast it wont cost 300 for new versions :P05:28
AdamDVHaha, true.05:28
nOStahli like ubuntu heh, when i was running arch linux alot i could always find a guide for ubuntu and translate it into arch05:29
AdamDVI love the usability of Ubuntu05:30
AdamDVI dont love how it seems to be starting to get chopped up.05:30
Cappyi would love ubuntu more if i could get wifi going on a server install05:30
AdamDVTheyre are what, 10 different package mangement apps now?05:30
AdamDVCappy: Why, oh why, would you be running a server on wifi?05:31
tenachI got it to work after googling "ubuntu server wifi"05:31
nOStahlservers = eth005:31
AdamDVThats like complaining the olympic jogging team doesn't allow wheelchairs.05:31
tenachAdamDV: I personally use it for local testing, then disable it.  I can't have my machines physically near/both at the router.05:31
CappyAdamDV, because its 40c outside and im not climbing around in the roof for a few months!05:31
nOStahli thought there was only apt-get :P05:31
nOStahlwho needs gui package management05:31
AdamDVnOStashl: Well, lets see: Ubuntu Software Center, Package Updater, Package Updater Preferences, Add/Remove, Synaptic, Gdebi.05:32
AdamDVCombine them all into one.05:32
AdamDVI prefer the terminal for 90% of things.05:32
nOStahlaye05:32
AdamDVBut, its nice to e able to have everything done in one application.05:32
AdamDVGroup the apps.05:32
nOStahli like update-manger though05:32
AdamDVI do too.05:32
nOStahlthat one i do like05:32
Cappythis is another issue, when im logged on to the machine, i keep getting messages like "* Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only"05:32
AdamDVBut, it would be nicer if apt-url, gdebi, and update-manager were all built into USC05:33
AdamDVCappy: You logged in as root?05:33
Cappynope, logged in as my regular user05:33
AdamDVAnd, are you reloading samba?05:33
Cappynot reloading anything, just sitting at a prompt05:33
AdamDVDo this:05:34
AdamDVcrontab -e05:34
AdamDVsudo crontab -e05:34
AdamDVSee if theres anything relating to samba in there.05:34
AdamDVThat broadcasts to the terminal or that prints to stdout05:34
AdamDV(?)05:34
Cappynope, nothing, just an entry about deleting the webmin temp files05:34
AdamDVGreat success! Got my little IMAP thing working!05:34
AdamDVCappy: Heh, try #samba ?05:35
Cappynah its cool05:35
nOStahlso with cloud can you run games via wine over the cloud05:35
nOStahland ramp up the nodes? :P05:35
AdamDVThat's going to revolutionize gaming05:35
Cappyim more interested getting this wifi working05:35
AdamDVCant blame it on the lag anymore.05:35
AdamDVlol05:35
nOStahlheh05:36
nOStahlimagine having 4 or 5 computers all playing your game05:36
AdamDVYea05:36
AdamDVIt'd be nice05:36
AdamDVI'm gonna laugh once quantum computers is figured out05:36
AdamDVI laugh at intel05:36
AdamDVANd theyre 'dual cores'05:36
AdamDVbullshit. Theyre virtualized cores. AMD make REAL cores.05:37
AdamDVAnyway, </offtopic?05:37
nOStahlheh05:37
nOStahli like intel05:37
nOStahlthey give me cool stuff05:37
AdamDVTheyre high end are good for desktops.05:37
AdamDVXeons are good for servers05:37
AdamDVOther than that, I'd reather AMD.05:37
AdamDV*rather05:38
AdamDVAlso, I've got a question for the ubuntu-gurus.05:38
AdamDVWhat with Canonical sending out the 'your private cloud' packages05:38
AdamDVWhere do we sign up?05:38
* AdamDV killed the room05:40
nOStahlheh05:41
* Cappy is pulling out his hair!05:42
AdamDVCappy: Welcome to the club.05:42

AdamDVIt wouldn't be the first time05:45
AdamDVOne time in #postfix something happened like that05:45
AdamDVbrb05:45
Cappyhang on a tic, i'll clear out the crap i put in /etc/network/interfaces05:45
nOStahli wonder when moonlight project will be able to get netflix to linux05:46
AdamDVback05:46
AdamDVYea, i #postfix, some guy comes in, we troubleshoot, then maybe 2 hours later hes like "Wait, do I have to install postfix first?"05:46
nOStahlheh05:47
AdamDVNext couple lines are usual this: mode +o user by Chanserv, mode +b *, /kick dumbuser05:47
AdamDVlol05:47
Cappyiwconfig lists a bunch of crap about the card, looks like its not seeing the ESSID etc.05:48
nOStahltype sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid any05:48
nOStahlthen type iwconfig again see if it associated with any of the wifi networks around you05:48
Cappyerror for wireless request "set essid" (8B1A) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; operation not permitted05:49

AdamDVnOStahl: Its been set to autojoin ;)05:52
CappynOStahl, my wireless is WPA2 protected....05:52
AdamDVHave a good night :D05:52
Cappy"sudo: dhcpcd: comand not found"05:52
nOStahlcappy sudo apt-get install wireless-tools05:53
Cappyk05:53
nOStahland goo to another computer and turn of wpa for now05:53
nOStahlcya later adam05:54
CappynOStahl, sorry about that06:13
Cappyi had to reboot the machine and now its halted on a bunch of errors where its 'pre-start'ing and 'post-start'ing wlan006:14
Cappy"terminated with status 1"06:14
Cappyi cant even boot into recovery mode06:18
nOStahlweird06:18
Cappyim not getting a prompt or anything, all i can do is ctrl-alt-del to reboot06:19
Cappyhrmmm am i going to have to re install again...... 3rd time lucky maybe?06:20
fabrice_spHi. Any reason why we should keep mysql 5.0 and mysql 5.1 in lucid? Squeeze will be release with 5.106:24
Cappynoi have installed wireless-tools but still get command not found when trying to do 'sudo dhcpcd wlan0'07:14
lifelessuhm07:17
lifelessdhcpd is the dhcp server07:17
lifelessnot really related to wireless-tools07:17
Cappyohh ok, well i was just going by what i was told in here earlier07:25
Cappyso i have the card associated to the network, but i just cant connect07:26
lifelessdo you have a dhcp server on the network07:26
Cappyyeah, the router is looking after that07:26
Cappythe other 5 machines on the network are all working fine07:26
lifelessis your /etc/network/interfaces setup appropriately?07:28
Cappyahh i got some tips in #ubuntu and it seems to have worked07:28
lifelessassuming you're not using network manager07:28
Cappynope, no gui here, all cli07:28
Cappysudo ifconfig wlan0 up07:28
lifelessnm can do cli, FWIW.07:28
Cappyand sudo dhclient wlan007:28
Cappyand now i have an address associated to the wlan0 interface07:29
Cappybut i cant ping out07:30
Cappyhost www.google.com - returns connection times out; no server could be reached07:37
Cappyand i get destination host unreachable when i ping my router07:37
lifelessCappy: I suggest a read of 'man interfaces'07:44
Cappylifeless, there are no entries in my /etc/network/interfaces08:01
Cappynot for the wlan0 anyway08:01
Cappyand after a reboot, i cant get dhclient wlan0 to fetch an addredd from the router08:01
Cappycomes back with "No DHCPOFFERS recieved, and fails again when "Trying recorded lease 192.168.0.103"08:02
Cappybah, got it sorted now08:04
Cappynow i just have to work how how to make it persistant through reboots08:07
ElllisDwhat was it?08:28
CappyElllisD, it was the fact that i hadn't associated the network before trying to get the dhcp lease09:13
Cappynow if i can just make it persistant, i'll be right09:13
ElllisDI don't even know what it is to associate a network09:14
lifelessCappy: you need to add entries as per the man page09:15
lifelessCappy: it can associate for you automatically if you configure it09:15
Cappyyeah i will have to look, the man page didnt make a whole lot of sense to me, thats partly because of the way my screen is configured (badly)09:16
Cappythe other thing i need to do is get my wifi secured back up... im currently using an open network to get it working09:17
Cappyfolks, here is my entry to /etc/network/interfaces for my wlan0.  since putting this in, i cant get a dhcp lease. http://pastebin.com/d73699e809:44
nathan__hello all this is going to sound strange but i need to slow down network access for hotmail i can redirect request for hotmail to another address but thats not what i need09:46
nathan__when using bind that is09:46
Yautja_CetanuHow do you set up virtual servers using just ports (So I have no dns, no multiple ip addresses)10:24
Cappylifeless, are you there?10:50
Cappyanyone there that might be able to help with /etc/network/interfaces and getting wifi working without any gui?10:51
Cappyis anyone here alive? im REALLY stuck and dont know where to go next11:12
Yautja_CetanuI asked a question a while ago and got no response :(11:14
Yautja_Cetanuhaven't seen any activity for an hour ish11:14
Cappyyeah tell me about it, you'd think with 191 people in the chan, there'd be a pretty good chance of a response11:14
Yautja_Cetanudo you know anywhere else to go?11:15
Yautja_CetanuI'm trying to set up an apache virtual host, so its a fiarly noob question11:15
Cappyi can only assume you've googled the hell outta it.11:17
Cappyits been a long time since i setup apache manually, so i cant really tell you11:17
Cappyprobably somewhere more apache-ish11:18
Cappy#apache11:18
Cappytry #httpd11:18
Yautja_CetanuI've done some googling11:19
Yautja_Cetanubut the problem is that I'm such a noob11:19
Yautja_Cetanuthe I don't really know which of the google results are in the right direction11:19
Cappyi'd ask in #httpd, they can probably point you in the right direction at the very least.11:20
Yautja_CetanuMost tutorials assume you have a dns server or going to set up multiple IPs, I want to have the virtual server on a different port11:20
Yautja_Cetanuwhich I've done on IIS11:20
Yautja_Cetanucool11:20
Yautja_Cetanuthanks11:20
Cappyso you want to do servername:80 for one site and servername:81 for another etc?11:20
Cappyive been working with this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202834 but i get a feeling it needs updating to karmic standards... otherwise im just being brain dead and missing something simple.11:24
Yautja_Cetanuyeah thats what I'm looking for11:30
Yautja_Cetanu:(11:30
Yautja_CetanuHave you tried using something like ebox or webmin?11:30
Cappyi cant talk to webmin unless i have a network connection11:31
Cappyits installed and was working, but now that my wifi is dead, i cant talk to it (11:31
Yautja_Cetanuoh yeah11:40
Yautja_Cetanuyou can't temporarily plug it in i guess?11:40
Cappyyeah i can, but i dont remember seeing anything about wireless setup in webmin11:42
Cappyat this point, if i knew it would work, i'd install a full desktop to the machine and get it up with wicd.11:43
Cappybut i dont think thats going to work while wicd isnt running.11:43
Cappyim about ready to ditch this for windows 98, at least i know i can make that work.12:00
Yautja_CetanuWhy don't you go for the full ubuntu with a gui?12:08
Yautja_CetanuMy general feeling has been that wifi is one of the banes of linux12:11
Yautja_Cetanubut thats based on very little12:11
Cappyi think i have it12:18
Cappydont ask me what i did, i have no idea12:18
Cappythis is for a server, something i can turn on when i need to play, something i can plug in to power and have work from a room with no wired ethernet12:19
Cappyanyway, looks like its working12:20
g-hennuxhi!13:18
g-hennuxi want cron to send me mails to some remote server, but without all the overhead of postfix, exim etc. -- what is the minimal setup i need for cron to be able to send mails?13:18
g-hennuxi created /root/.forward pointing to the correct address, but it seems to be ignored, and there's also no mail appearing in /var/mail/root, so i'm a bit puzzled13:19
g-hennuxdo i need a sendmail executable, as provided, e.g. by nullmailer?13:20
volterHello!13:20
DanDareHello. I need to pay something to have ubuntu server LTS and it´s 5 year security updates ?13:21

DanDareg-hennux, thanks13:21
g-hennuxDanDare: 10.04 will be the next LTS release, afaik13:22
sherrg-hennux: what about ssmtp - simple smtp - sends only?13:22
volterI've got wrong permissions on /dev/null on a virtual root server. They are 600 instead of 666, and it's not caused by udev.13:22
DanDareand normal Ubuntu Server distros (not LTS) will have at least 18 months of security updates? I mean, this really works ?13:22
DanDareg-hennux, yeah, im reading about... for April13:22
g-hennuxsherr: so what is the method that cron uses to send mail? e.g. with python's smtplib module, i guess i don't need any mta, just because python speaks SMTP. so i was wondering, what backend cron uses to send mail13:23
sherrg-hennux: cron will use sendmail or equivalent for non-local mail e.g. postfix, ssmtp etc.13:24
DanDareSorry to ask this but im just sarting with Ubuntu Server. Im a Debian user. In few words what´s the main advantage of Ubuntu Server compared to Debian ?13:25
sherrin fact - try just "mail -s subject <addr>" (heirloom-mailx)13:25
g-hennuxsherr: ok, now i installed ssmtp, but then local delivery won't work any more. i.e. "mail root" will give me "relay access denied", because the next server in line won't accept mails for "root@mymachine"13:27
paltI'm having some HW problems with a server. Just before christmas one of the two system driver (in a raid) failed. I bought a replacement and got it working again. Now the other drive seems to be failing, giving me lots of error messages in dmesg. However, one strange thing is that the new drive got kicked out of the raid just now, and the old drive are still in it, but having lots of error messages in dmesg13:27
sherrg-hennux: root should be dealt with by /etc/aliases - local delivery to a named user i.e. you13:28
paltIs there someway to check if it is some other hardware issues, like IDE controller or something?13:29
DanDarepalt, start trying to replace data cables (imo)13:30
g-hennuxsherr: /etc/aliases is not present. and "sendmail root" will try to connect to my mailhub to deliver the mail. that's not cool. i want mails for local users to be put in /var/mail/ and mails for non-local users to be transported via my mailhub13:30
sherrg-hennux: have you configured ssmtp?13:31
g-hennuxsherr: yes13:31
DanDarepalt, or same error disks on second IDE to see if they got errors13:31
sherrg-hennux: I suggested it but don't use it (I use Postfix). This page : http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/13200613:32
sherrsays to have a "root=" line to grab root's mail.13:32
paltswap the discs and see if I get the error from the swapped disc?13:32
sherrg-hennux: http://linux.die.net/man/5/ssmtp.conf - root option13:33
g-hennuxsherr: ok, now got it working as it should, i guess13:34
g-hennuxthank you!13:34
paltbah, I hate hardware errors ;P13:34
sherrg-hennux: no problem.13:36
sherrpalt: Also check SMART health status on both disks - smartctl13:36
paltsherr: thx :) I'll try that :)13:45
DanDarewell, Ubuntu seems to be really making a difference14:00
DanDareI plugged an USB cam and it just works14:00

uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 525041 in php5 "Apache serves PHP files without parsing them" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/52504121:21
KurtKrautI think I've seen this twice21:21
DanDareThis bug file means that... installing php on a fresh setup with minimal configurations? I mean, there´s a lot of web servers around loading php pages correctly21:23
DanDarea bug may be hard to spot as caused by a conjuction of facts anyway21:24
DanDareand this is annoying, after changing permissions of some MySQL user using phpmyadmin i got "Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly.", cant log anymore on phpmyadmin, and it was working.. i dont touched anything on the config files21:26
