robwlo531hi, what's the tool in Kubuntu behind the popup notifications? It's annoying me with stupid messages that I don't really want to read. So, I'd like to configure it somewhere. Is that possible?08:39

bigbrovarHi guys, I just installed kde 4.4 on a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10.. I did the upgrade from cli and only logged into the desktop once it was done. Now am having some issues with nepomuk. Its too cpu intensive10:13
bigbrovarsomeone suggested I convert my db and some stuff but am totally lost on this10:13
xjjkbigbrovar: it's CPU intensive while indexing10:14
xjjknot much you can do about it...10:14
xjjkbigbrovar: were you using an RC of KDE 4.4?10:15
kayomaВсем привет10:15
kayomaHi all10:15
kayomaЕсть кто?10:15
wilsby29I had to disable a suse 3rd party indexing program (can't remember what it was called) because it was flowing my computer to a standstill10:19
wilsby29You can disable that sort of stuff under the service manager in system settings10:20
wilsby29the suse one is called the free space notifier10:20
wilsby29disable that10:20
bigbrovarxjjk: I left it to index for like 2 days now and its still indexing.. I am still unable to use the search feature yet.10:28
insalut10:28
xjjkbigbrovar: you should be able to use the search feature by now10:28
xjjkbigbrovar: I've been indexing for some 2 wks....10:28
bigbrovarxjjk: someone was telling me about how to convert the database to a nepumuk db10:28
xjjkI have a lot of source code lying around that it's apparently VERY slow on10:28
xjjkbigbrovar: what were you running before that you're converting10:28
bigbrovarxjjk: nothing.. I just use my system for everyday tasks :(10:29
xjjkbigbrovar: were you using KDE 4.3 with sesame or redland? and did you setup sesame or redland to create a database in the first place?10:29
bigbrovarxjjk: is the end result really what the pain? I am using fsrunner and catfish as a walkround10:29
xjjkor were you using a KDE 4.4 RC?10:30
xjjkbigbrovar: I honestly don't know10:30
bigbrovarxjjk: I upgraded from kde4.3 but I cant say which db it was using10:30
xjjknot heard of fsrunner/catfish...10:30
xjjkbigbrovar: KDE 4.3 you could use either sesame or redland10:30
xjjkand by default, they weren't even setup to work10:30
bigbrovarI am using KDE 4.4 upgraded from a fresh Kubuntu 9.1010:30
xjjkso you don't have a database to convert10:30
xjjkbigbrovar: I'd just let it take it's time... but to prevent it from being annoying10:31
xjjkthere's a nepomuk icon in your system tray10:31
xjjkjust suspend indexing whenever you're actively using your computer10:31
xjjkand say, overnight, turn indexing back on10:32
bigbrovarIt seems I am using soprano-virtuoso.db ( I really dont know much about all this db things.. its so confusing)10:32
xjjkbigbrovar: yes that's what KDE 4.4 uses10:32
BeteNoirehi10:32
BeteNoirewhy after system restart all shared printeres in kubuntu become unshared?10:33
bigbrovarxjjk: ok so I dont need to convert anything?10:34
xjjkbigbrovar: it doesn't appear you have anything to convert10:34
xjjkfrom what you've said10:34
xjjkbigbrovar: again, I'd just suspend the indexing when you're actively using the computer10:34
bigbrovarxjjk: great Idea I think I would do that, probably run it over night as u suggested10:37
xjjkbigbrovar: depending on what you're indexing it may take several nights10:37
bigbrovarxjjk: can I disable it all together till I am ready to use it?10:37
xjjkI might actually think I've found some kind of bug/problem with the indexer... it shouldn't take this long10:37
xjjkbigbrovar: yes, easily10:37
xjjkin System Settings, go to Desktop  Search and disable Nepomuk10:38
bigbrovarxjjk: and nothing would break? cus it seems akonadi depends on nepomuk and many things depend on akonadi10:38
xjjkbigbrovar: I'm honestly not sure, but I've run it that way and KMail and my address book still appeared to work10:39
xjjkso that much at least10:39
bigbrovarok FYI Kmail is a bigger pain. I just use thunderbird.. Kde still needs a lot of work.. but am addicted to it :)10:40
xjjkbigbrovar: AFAIK you can also enable Nepomuk but disable Strigi, which will just turn off the indexing10:40
xjjkKMail is *awesome*10:40
bigjoolsunless you're using IMAP10:42
xjjkI use IMAP10:42
bigbrovarxjjk: thanks will do just that..10:42
xjjkit could be better... but it works enough10:42
bigjoolstry suspending the machine with kmail connected via imap10:42
xjjkbigjools: yeah... been there done that10:43
bigbrovarxjjk: bigjools: I use imap too.. I mean I dont even know where to start.. It takes forever to pull in my mails10:43
xjjkbigjools: that's a bug that hopefully will be fixed when KMail is ported to Akonadi10:43
bigjoolsyes, it's loads slower than t'bird for imap10:43
xjjkbut there's a workaround which works fine10:43
bigjoolstell me more!10:43
xjjkin systemsettings there's some timeout you can adjust10:43
bigbrovarIts so slow.. I mean slow.. I really want to use it and stuff but I always find myself going back to thunderbird which seems to always just works :(10:43
xjjklet me find the bug10:44
xjjkbigbrovar: are you using disconnected IMAP or normal IMAP?10:44
bigjoolsbigbrovar: once it's filled the local cache, it's much quicker10:44
bigjoolsjust the first connect is bad10:44
bigjoolsnormal for me10:44
bigbrovarxjjk: what is the the diff btw disconnected and normal and which one causes less pain :P10:45
xjjkbigbrovar: use normal10:45
xjjkdisconnected has phenomenally improved but in general it's still terrible10:45
xjjkbigbrovar: disconnected basically downloads everything locally... so you can access stuff offline10:46
bigbrovarxjjk: so with all this problems how is kmail **awesome** over thunderbird10:46
bigbrovarxjjk: oh ok10:46
xjjkThunderbird has a similar feature, but it works much, much better than KMail10:46
xjjkKMail also unfortunately forces you to download everything (which is unusable for large IMAP servers), while Thunderbird lets you select individual folders10:46
xjjkeh, short answer: use normal for now10:46
xjjkhopefully the situation will improve in KDE 4.510:47
bigbrovarxjjk: how do i set the timeout stuff so it loads quicker10:47
xjjkbigbrovar: it won't load stuff quicker, it will just mitigate the suspend problem10:47
bigjoolswhich setting is that?10:47
bigbrovarok10:47
xjjklooking...10:47
bigjoolsthanks10:47

xjjkbigbrovar: bigjools: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77862#c4810:49
xjjkOpen the10:49
xjjkControl center -> Network -> Connection options and set the "Server response"10:49
xjjktimeout from 600 to something like 20 seconds.10:49
xjjkI've set it to 1010:49
bigbrovarxjjk: thanks mate ... this is one of the most enlightened convo  I have ever had on irc :)10:50
bigjoolssweet. thanks10:50
xjjkbigjools: bigjools: not that it'll get it fixed, please vote for that bug10:50
xjjkI'm under the impression the kdepim developers have given up trying to fix it in the current codebase10:50
xjjkit's too messy10:51

bigbrovarbigjools: that is nothing compared to the kopete proxy bug..11:03
bigbrovarbigjools: kde has improved quite alot but there are some basic tools that needs fixing and It would be nice if more work is channelled towards fixing this issues soe of which are so foundamental11:04
bigjoolsit's understandable that it got ignored during the kde4 changes, but it needs looking at now11:04

zubin71hi i use nm-applet(gnome) for connecting to the wireless network as knetworkmanager doesnt work fine for me. i want nm-applet to be started on its own at boot time. how do i do that?11:08

ubottuLAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process (different in Edgy+)16:32

Any ideas what i can do now? thanks in advance...17:08

bericI don't know the default that comes with 9.10 didn't touch that.19:03

Mamarokberic: you should upgrade your KDE version, there have been many bugfixes since the release, as well as many fixes for Kubuntu 9.1019:03

przemo_oneMamarok I know that's linux man :)20:04
bericprzemo_one: I'll reboot allthough I'm quite sure nobody touched the grub menu.20:05
apacheloggerMamarok: not failsafe in general, simply selecting KDE as session in KDM should solve the issue20:05
apachelogger(supposedly)20:05
Mamarokberic: and you do have enough disk space on that machine, do you?20:05
datacrusherprzemo_one, or do you know a way to force firefox to keep open?20:05

datacrusherif someone uses alt-f4 to close it20:05
bericyes doublechecked now.20:05
Mamarokapachelogger: thanks20:05
Mamarokberic: see what apachelogger just said20:06
przemo_onedatacrusher disable alt+f4?20:06
meero__hi, im having problems with sound on kubuntu, how to debug this?20:06
bericOK lemme see KDM has this menu that I can select failsafe20:06
datacrusheryeah, so the user cant close firefox20:06
datacrusherif it does, it will open again20:07
przemo_onedatacrusher but there is file exit function. it's not possible. mabye if there is no firefox another would open.20:07
bericSame thing when I select KDE20:07
apacheloggerberic: what does the .xsession-errors look like20:08
apacheloggerberic: does this also happen with a new user?20:08
bericoh now a bit different20:09
datacrusherprzemo_one, im using firefox kiosk addon, wich makes firefox fullscreen by default20:09
datacrusherno options menu20:09
datacrusherit if keeps open, my job is done20:09
przemo_oneberic do cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf for me please20:09
beric.xsession-erros here http://paste.ubuntu.com/382487/20:09
Mamarokprzemo_one: let apachelogger handle that, he knows what he is doing20:09
przemo_oneMamarok fine :)20:10
apacheloggerthe xorg.conf can't hurt though :)20:10
bericprzemo_one: I have no xorg.conf20:10
bericonly xorg.conf.failsafe20:10
bericI'll try as another user now20:11
przemo_onedatacrusher there should be a script that checks is there a firefox process loaded and if not load one. i'm not that smart so you have to search google or ask someone else.20:11
meero__hi, im having problems with sound on kubuntu, how to debug this???20:11
przemo_onemeero__ what is your problem? maybe i can help with fixing that20:12
datacrusherprzemo_one, thats exactly the thing i need20:13
datacrusherbut thanks anyway, ill google it20:13
przemo_oneberic if your user profile files are own for exaple by root - copied from /root then it might log out20:13
przemo_onedatacrusher simple script. crond will run it from time to time.20:14
bericHmm guys I think I have a clue20:14
meero__przemo_one: i have HDA intel sound card, when i start kubuntu, sound is playing, after that some error with hda intel, and kubuntu swithes to pulse audio, which is not working at all20:14
bericIt's related to my language20:14
Mamarokberic: you mean the locales settings?20:15
przemo_onemeero__ they told me that poulse is not present in kde kermic :)20:15
bericyes20:15
meero__przemo_one: i have it :-)20:16
bericI ran qu-language-selector and changed to english. then created another user and that user can log in normally20:16
przemo_onemeero__ just removed thanks Mamarok20:16
meero__przemo_one: i should remove amarok?20:16
Mamarokprzemo_one: I beg your pardon?20:16
bericbut another new user I created before changing that locale cant log in with the same .xsession_errors20:16
apacheloggerberic: are you logged in as the same user that tries to login via kdm?20:16
Mamarokmeero__: don't!20:17
meero__Mamarok: what ??20:17
Mamarokmeero__: you should't remove Amarok, you should remove pulseaudio, unless you are using Gnome20:17
przemo_oneMamarok meero__ says that he have pulseaudio in kubuntu, but you sed that there should not be.20:17
bericapachelogger: explain ? I'm logged via ssh as a normal user20:17
=== zbenjamin is now known as zbenjamin|away
Mamarokprzemo_one: well, then be more specific, he didn't understand what you said, and why did you highlight me?20:18
przemo_one*said20:18
meero__przemo_one: hmm, im using both gnome and kde, switching ..... testing, maybe thats a problem20:18
apacheloggerberic: consolekit (a session management tool) could possibly block logins ... say if the same user is logged in via ssh ;)20:18
apacheloggerberic: just a guess though20:18
meero__Mamarok: il try to remove amarok and pulseaudio20:18
apacheloggerberic: and the .xsession-errors indicates that there is a permission issue, so that is my best guess right now20:18
meero__przemo_one: pulze audio is crap20:18
Mamarokmeero__: then you can switch the systemsettings, don't remove pulseaudio, you need it for Gnome20:19
przemo_onemeero__ all right pulse is not present in kde. it was mine problem. i was talking about guest of this channel not about amarok.20:19
bericI can eliminate that too. I'm logged in as user shiloh. tries to log in as user uri and get the same error20:19
przemo_onemeero__ is everything ok on gnome??20:19
Mamarokmeero__: did you read what I just said?20:19
meero__przemo_one: yes, gnome works fine20:19
bericapachelogger: however user bob which I crated after runing qt-language-selector can log in20:19
kelopezOK20:19
Mamarokprzemo_one: could you stick to one topic maybe? You are confusing people20:19
meero__Mamarok: a kinda... :-)20:19
kelopezxD20:20
przemo_oneMamarok I'm multitasking :)20:20
Mamarokprzemo_one: don't and stay on topic, please20:20
apacheloggerohhh20:20
apacheloggerberic: please paste an ls -lah of bob's home, and run kdebugdialog as bob, select all and apply20:21
Mamarokmeero__: if you want to use both KDE and Gnome, don't remove pulseaudio, you need to change the sound settings, and you can do this either in the SystemSettings in KDE -> Multimedia or in the Amarok settings menu -> playback -> sound configuration20:21
apacheloggerberic: then try again a login as bob, .xsession-errors may contain more information then :)20:21
apacheloggerberic: weird issue you got there :)20:21
meero__Mamarok: is there any particular reason to not remove pulseaudio?20:22
Mamarokapachelogger: apparently his problem is not new, it was reported by 9.04 users, too20:22
bericBTW I ran qt-language-selector using ssh x forward in case you were wondering.20:22
Mamarokmeero__: well, yes, you need it in Gnome20:22
meero__Mamarok: whatfor?20:22
apacheloggerberic: I figured :)20:22
Mamarokmeero__: did you read what I told you? I just explained that20:22
Mamarokmeero__: for sound, of course20:22
przemo_onemeero__ pulseaudio is a part of gnome installation. i suggest to leave it.20:23
apacheloggerMamarok: there are even more reasons to kdm exhibiting such bounce back behaviour than for akonadi to claim unstartability ;)20:23
Mamarokprzemo_one: either you do the support or I, both will not work20:23
przemo_onemeero__ it's not problem with poulse.20:23

meero__Mamarok: thanks20:25
apacheloggerberic: yeah, that is intent ... does login with bob work?20:25
przemo_onemeero__ did you have this problem before, or did you just installed kde?20:26
bericapachelogger: yes. bob, the one with english locale works.  the second one does not. I'm still filling your previous orders20:26
meero__przemo_one: acctualy, when i started using kde i experienced this... before i didnt pay attention, as i was setting the system20:26
apacheloggerberic: well, I find it unlikely that the folder names are at fault, but in general something locale related might be indeed responsible (maybe something is wrong witht the input method setup?)20:27

Mamarokkaddi: why would that kill your internet connection? And what command did you do that removed all that?22:56
kaddii use wicd, knetworkmanager has always been flakey for me and it won't connect to one of the wpa2-networks i frequently visit. kubuntu-desktop will force the reinstall of knetworkmanager and uninstall wicd, leaving me without internet access22:57
kaddiand the only command i enter was the one you gave me. But, as I said, there were a lot of updates trying to install themselves at the same time and when I checked back it had already removed kubuntu-desktop and dragonplayer, kaffeine and so on. I stopped it, but it was too late22:58
