confusiousanybody here able to tell me why when I try to upload pics to myspace, myspace for some reason is only seeing 1 pic out of about 7 that are on the desktop ?00:24
knomewrong file type?00:27
knomewrong file extension?00:28
confusioushmmmm I don't think so.they were all taken with the same cameraphone.I did change the name of the pics but I've done that before with no problem..It's realy weird00:29
knomei don't know myspace so i can't help any further00:32
knomejust some ideas00:32
confusiousWell, thanks very much anyway.Just thought I could maybe get some ideas about where to go or something00:33
knomeyeah00:33
Balsaqgood evening xubuntu tribal council...01:32
knomeha01:40
BalsaqI need to assign the output to a variable. In bourne shell it would be VAR=`application argument0 argument1`.02:19
bj0how do you disable the screensaver from locking the screen?02:22
BalsaqMaybe automatically disable/change screensaver/monitor power off when any program is in full screen mode.02:24
bj0i mean when it just idles long enough for the screen saver to come on...02:26
charlie-tcabj0: Applications -> Settings -> Screensaver should have a checkbox for it02:27
bj0it's not checked02:27
BalsaqI02:29
Balsaqgrabbed "no screen saver" real quick as it entered02:29
Balsaqthe screen saver and that seems to have done it.02:29
bj0grabbed 'no screen saver'?02:29
BalsaqI tried to jump to the02:30
Balsaq>> settings quickly to disable it before the image02:30
Balsaq>> displays, but no go.02:30
bj0i'm assuming it's xscreensaver that's locking it02:32
bj0i'm using the test version of 10.04 tho, so maybe i should be posting this to the mailing list? ><02:34
confusioushello again everybody02:34
Balsaqyou could try disabling/removing the lines that start a screensaver daemon in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc to prevent locking in Xubuntu 9.04 or less. You could remove this:02:35
Balsaq<clip>02:35
Balsaq# Launch xscreensaver (if available), but only as non-root user02:35
Balsaqif test $UID -gt 0 -a -z "$VNCSESSION"; then02:35
Balsaq    if test x"`which xscreensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then02:35
Balsaq        xscreensaver -no-splash &02:35
Balsaq    elif test x"`which gnome-screensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then02:35
Balsaq        gnome-screensaver &02:36
Balsaq    fi02:36
Balsaqfi02:36
Balsaq</clip>02:36
BalsaqIf you still want xflock4 to work, install xlockmore.02:36
BalsaqXubuntu 9.10 uses xfce4-power-manager for which there is a setting not to lock screen when going to suspend/hibernate02:36
charlie-tcaMaybe that is where it is now in lucid too02:38
charlie-tcabj0: Asking on the mailing list may not get an answer either. You do need to specify that it is Lucid. Try in #ubuntu+1, too02:39
confusiousmaybe someone could help me with this...is there anything I could do to make my online experience any better ??when I go to certain websites {like myspace "photo upload",etc} my cpu just really maxes out & sometimes even seems to get stuck.I end up someites just killing the whole browser because of this.Is there anything I can do about this ? I have a 30-40 {can't remember} GB HD on this pc so that's not a problem02:39
charlie-tcatry a different browser. How much memory do you have?02:40
confusioushmmmmmm 256 I think02:40
bj0charlie-tca, the only reason i was thinking of the mailing list is because the xubuntu testing wiki said to post stuff there02:41
charlie-tcayup02:41
charlie-tcabut you need to specify the version to get the right help02:42
Balsaqthe system monitor feature sucks up a lot of juice02:42
bj0right, i was thinking more of "posting results" than of getting help02:42
bj0heh02:42
charlie-tcaconfusious: That would be the problem.02:42
charlie-tcawith 256MB, you have to only have the browser open, without a lot of tabs02:43
charlie-tcaor try midori or epiphany-browser02:43
Balsaqi have 512 rram on my xubuntu machine and it get to be over 256 all the time when i am in system monitor and on the internet02:44
confusioushmmmmmm according to system monitor I have 248.6MiB celeron02:44
charlie-tcaBalsaq: system monitor sucks up the memory02:44
confusiousI usualy don't run it02:44
bj0try running "free -m" in a terminal02:45
confusiouswhat's "free -m" ?02:45
syn-acktry it and see02:45
bj0shows how much free memory you have (in megs)02:45
confusiousokay I'll try02:45
syn-ackheh, I think I need to get 2 more gigs for this machine02:46
bj0i've got 8 gigs, it's wonderful :)02:46
confusiousaccording to free -m.............                       total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached02:47
confusiousMem:           248        243          5          0          1         4602:47
confusious-/+ buffers/cache:        194         5402:47
confusiousSwap:          721        246        47402:47
bj0yikes02:47
confusiousyeah02:47
confusiousso, any suggestions other than buying more memory which I don't think can ahppen at the moment02:51
xiainxturn of any fancy graphical effect?02:51
xiainxOnly have 1 workspace?02:51
xiainxdoes your video card have dedicated RAM?02:51
confusiousohh my God ! Whoa ! As far as I know,no fancy graphics.........2 workspaces so far02:53
Balsaqram is sooo cheap now...bought a gig the other day for 17 bucks02:53
confusiousdon't know about that video card thing Can you tell me how to check ?02:53
bj0some old laptops can't fit much ram (mine only goes up to 256 + 512)02:54
bj0you can try using epiphany-browser for web browsing02:54
confusiousold pc here balsaq besides, the woman is in charge of the $ right now DARMNIT !02:54
Balsaqah02:55
charlie-tcaAnd, depending on the country, ram can be very expensive yet02:55
bj0and don't open a lot of instances of it02:55
Balsaqi see02:55
charlie-tcatry midori or epiphany instead of using firefox. They don't use as much memory02:55
confusioushey thanks for that info bjo I might try that02:55
confusiousYes,thank you all very much02:56
Balsaqanytime confucious02:56
Balsaqthank you for choosing xubuntu02:56
confusiousIf it weren't for a geek friend I would never even known there were different OS'S besides Microcrap02:57
Balsaqi like xp pro sp3 and w7...but xubuntu is so scrappy, you gotta luv it!02:59
bj0i can't ever give up multiple workspaces03:00
xiainxlol03:16
xiainxcan someone tell me about compiz-fusion??03:16
bj0the most annoying thing about non-firefox browsers is i'm so use to "shift/ctrl+tab", it's so natural and none of the other ones let me change it :/03:16
charlie-tca!compiz03:16
ubottuCompiz (compositing window manager), for a howto see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager and more help #compiz03:16
xiainxthank you03:17
bj0that's neat, i wonder what else it can do03:17

confusiousall files/folders on desk are gone....they are still here.......they were for some reason placed in one I had on the desk called funny pics18:19
confusiousit seems that interrupting this upda {because I thought it was stuck} took all the files/folders off the desktop & reset everything18:21

confusiousespecially my old version18:24
charlie-tcaXubuntu is stable, but we can't account for things a user did to the system.18:24
confusiousAll I did was to stop an update that seemed hung !18:25
charlie-tcaApparently none of us have seen this issue before.18:25
confusiousahhhhhhhh !! Darnit18:25
confusiousWell,it's gotto be something someonew did to my pc when I wasn't looking or maybe it's just because my comps ram is crap18:26

charlie-tcanope18:27
confusiousYou're kidding !18:28
charlie-tcaThat would be windows, unless you have installed an application that will do it18:28

confusiousquestion...I had on my top panel a program called the "notes" plugin for the xfce4 desktop UNTIL a recent MAJOR disaster.Had alot of notes within thiis program.Had alot of things on the desktop also which disappeared which I have since found in another folder & returned to my desktop.Now...I would like to find all of those jotes also if possible. Can anyone possibly tell me where I might look for those ?21:07
knomethe notes? what about trying to reload the panel plugin?21:07
mr_pouitconfusious: should be in ~/.local/share/notes21:08
confusiousYeah,I tried that.Unforunately,it just gave me a new version of it21:08
knomesee the file mr_pouit pointed you to then21:08
knomehe's probably correct21:09
confusiousSo,mr_pouit,if I were to type this into a terminal I might be able to retrieve thos3e21:09
confusious?21:09
confusiousthank you.Will try21:09
mr_pouityeah, it should work, if the new instance you started didn't erase everythin :]21:10
mr_pouit+g21:10
confusiousSorry what's  +g mean ?21:10
confusiousI got  a readout that said "bash: /home/bobby/.local/share/notes: is a directory21:11
confusious"21:11
mr_pouiteverythin+g = everything (I forgot the 'g' ;)21:11
mr_pouitconfusious: yes, it's a directory, indeed. You should have inside one (or several) directories containing several notes21:12
confusiousI get the same readout21:14
confusiousI tried  ~/.local/share/notes +g   &  ~/.local/share/notes g    and the terminal just tells me that it's a directory21:15
mr_pouitraah, sorry, forget about the 'g'21:15
mr_pouitif you're not confident with xfce4-terminal, open thunar, hit ctrl+h to show hidden files/dirs, and go to .local/share/notes21:16
confusioustried that way first......am I supposed to put all of that in there ? including the squiggle & backslah etc ?21:17
confusiousHmmmmmmmm21:17
confusiousWell,now,that's another idea21:17
confusiousLet me try that21:17
confusiousShoot ! Looks like it may have all been erased21:19
confusiousShoot ! It looks like it may have all been erased21:20
confusiousooops21:20
confusiousCould it be anywhere else mr-pouit ?21:20
mr_pouitconfusious: which version do you use?21:21
confusiousXubuntu..........uhmm 8.0 or 8.1021:22
confusiousI know.It's old21:22
confusious8.04 or 8.1021:22
mr_pouitmmh, I think it's the only place21:23
confusiousOh,well. Thanks very much anyway.Atleast I was able to recover all those files/folderes that were on my desk21:24
confusiousI'm so surprised by all of this. All this just because I interrupted a Firefox updqate because I thought it was stuck21:26
confusiousWell, let me ask this of you guys....in the future,so this doesn't happen again....how can I make sure I don't lose all of that stuff ? At least the stuff on my desktop. Now,the only other thing is maybe trying to get all bookmarks back21:28
confusiousI havea floppy {yes,I know}21:28
charlie-tcaBack up21:29
charlie-tcacheck out the application called sbackup21:29
confusiousSee,at this point,I'm not even sure  my entire system is working properly.Like the update feature that tells me when there's updates available21:30
confusiousThank you21:30
charlie-tcaIf it isn't working, you will get an error message of some kind21:31
confusiousHeck I'm not even sure my floppy is working.I saw an instance of it somewhere & it was greyed out21:31
confusiousWell,thanks again everybody21:31
charlie-tcaIt will grey out if there is not a disk in it21:32
ryanrhee90hi guys. i'm installing xubuntu on a machine thru a usb. i have a 1080p hdtv as my monitor that's connected thru a vga cable. when xubuntu (9.10 live, x64) tries to load the menu, my monitor goes blue and says 'unsupported format'. i think xubuntu is pushing 1920x1080 or higher, which my monitor can't handle. (it only likes 1920x1080 from hdmi)23:42
ryanrhee90is there a way to force xubuntu to output at a lower resolution when showing the menu? i get the 'unsupported format' before i get to any command prompt / GUI screen.23:43
charlie-tcaTry hitting F4 and choosing safe graphics23:43
ryanrhee90thanks! i'll try that right now.23:43
ryanrhee90hrm.. pressing f4 didn't do much. i was able to get to a command prompt by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 / ctrl+alt+f223:49
ryanrhee90is there a way to start the installer with safe graphics from the prompt?23:49
ryanrhee90anyone? :/23:54
