[00:24] anybody here able to tell me why when I try to upload pics to myspace, myspace for some reason is only seeing 1 pic out of about 7 that are on the desktop ? [00:27] wrong file type? [00:28] wrong file extension? [00:29] hmmmm I don't think so.they were all taken with the same cameraphone.I did change the name of the pics but I've done that before with no problem..It's realy weird [00:32] i don't know myspace so i can't help any further [00:32] just some ideas [00:33] Well, thanks very much anyway.Just thought I could maybe get some ideas about where to go or something [00:33] yeah [01:32] good evening xubuntu tribal council... [01:40] ha [02:19] I need to assign the output to a variable. In bourne shell it would be VAR=`application argument0 argument1`. [02:22] how do you disable the screensaver from locking the screen? [02:24] Maybe automatically disable/change screensaver/monitor power off when any program is in full screen mode. [02:26] i mean when it just idles long enough for the screen saver to come on... [02:27] bj0: Applications -> Settings -> Screensaver should have a checkbox for it [02:27] it's not checked [02:29] I [02:29] grabbed "no screen saver" real quick as it entered [02:29] the screen saver and that seems to have done it. [02:29] grabbed 'no screen saver'? [02:30] I tried to jump to the [02:30] >> settings quickly to disable it before the image [02:30] >> displays, but no go. [02:32] i'm assuming it's xscreensaver that's locking it [02:34] i'm using the test version of 10.04 tho, so maybe i should be posting this to the mailing list? >< [02:34] hello again everybody [02:35] you could try disabling/removing the lines that start a screensaver daemon in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc to prevent locking in Xubuntu 9.04 or less. You could remove this: [02:35] [02:35] # Launch xscreensaver (if available), but only as non-root user [02:35] if test $UID -gt 0 -a -z "$VNCSESSION"; then [02:35] if test x"`which xscreensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then [02:35] xscreensaver -no-splash & [02:35] elif test x"`which gnome-screensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then [02:36] gnome-screensaver & [02:36] fi [02:36] fi [02:36] [02:36] If you still want xflock4 to work, install xlockmore. [02:36] Xubuntu 9.10 uses xfce4-power-manager for which there is a setting not to lock screen when going to suspend/hibernate [02:38] Maybe that is where it is now in lucid too [02:39] bj0: Asking on the mailing list may not get an answer either. You do need to specify that it is Lucid. Try in #ubuntu+1, too [02:39] maybe someone could help me with this...is there anything I could do to make my online experience any better ??when I go to certain websites {like myspace "photo upload",etc} my cpu just really maxes out & sometimes even seems to get stuck.I end up someites just killing the whole browser because of this.Is there anything I can do about this ? I have a 30-40 {can't remember} GB HD on this pc so that's not a problem [02:40] try a different browser. How much memory do you have? [02:40] hmmmmmm 256 I think [02:41] charlie-tca, the only reason i was thinking of the mailing list is because the xubuntu testing wiki said to post stuff there [02:41] yup [02:42] but you need to specify the version to get the right help [02:42] the system monitor feature sucks up a lot of juice [02:42] right, i was thinking more of "posting results" than of getting help [02:42] heh [02:42] confusious: That would be the problem. [02:43] with 256MB, you have to only have the browser open, without a lot of tabs [02:43] or try midori or epiphany-browser [02:44] i have 512 rram on my xubuntu machine and it get to be over 256 all the time when i am in system monitor and on the internet [02:44] hmmmmmm according to system monitor I have 248.6MiB celeron [02:44] Balsaq: system monitor sucks up the memory [02:44] I usualy don't run it [02:45] try running "free -m" in a terminal [02:45] what's "free -m" ? [02:45] try it and see [02:45] shows how much free memory you have (in megs) [02:45] okay I'll try [02:46] heh, I think I need to get 2 more gigs for this machine [02:46] i've got 8 gigs, it's wonderful :) [02:47] according to free -m............. total used free shared buffers cached [02:47] Mem: 248 243 5 0 1 46 [02:47] -/+ buffers/cache: 194 54 [02:47] Swap: 721 246 474 [02:47] yikes [02:47] yeah [02:51] so,any suggestions other than buying more memory which I don't think can ahppen at the moment [02:51] turn of any fancy graphical effect? [02:51] Only have 1 workspace? [02:51] does your video card have dedicated RAM? [02:53] ohh my God ! Whoa ! As far as I know,no fancy graphics.........2 workspaces so far [02:53] ram is sooo cheap now...bought a gig the other day for 17 bucks [02:53] don't know about that video card thing Can you tell me how to check ? [02:54] some old laptops can't fit much ram (mine only goes up to 256 + 512) [02:54] you can try using epiphany-browser for web browsing [02:54] old pc here balsaq besides, the woman is in charge of the $ right now DARMNIT ! [02:55] ah [02:55] And, depending on the country, ram can be very expensive yet [02:55] and don't open a lot of instances of it [02:55] i see [02:55] try midori or epiphany instead of using firefox. They don't use as much memory [02:55] hey thanks for that info bjo I might try that [02:56] Yes,thank you all very much [02:56] anytime confucious [02:56] thank you for choosing xubuntu [02:57] If it weren't for a geek friend I would never even known there were different OS'S besides Microcrap [02:59] i like xp pro sp3 and w7...but xubuntu is so scrappy, you gotta luv it! [03:00] i can't ever give up multiple workspaces [03:16] lol [03:16] can someone tell me about compiz-fusion?? [03:16] the most annoying thing about non-firefox browsers is i'm so use to "shift/ctrl+tab", it's so natural and none of the other ones let me change it :/ [03:16] !compiz [03:16] Compiz (compositing window manager), for a howto see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager and more help #compiz [03:17] thank you [03:17] that's neat, i wonder what else it can do [03:17] !gnome-do [03:17] nope :/ [03:17] !makemeasandwich [03:17] !sudomakemeasandwich [03:17] hmmm [03:18] !placehamandcheesebetweenbreadandbringittome [03:18] not explicit enough, I guess [03:20] You are welcome [03:30] !ubottu > tell bj0 about you [03:31] !ubottu | bj0 [03:31] bj0: Hi! If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) [18:18] a little less than a week ago I interrupted a firefox update & this really seemed to scrwe things up.............. [18:19] all files/folders on desk are gone....they are still here.......they were for some reason placed in one I had on the desk called funny pics [18:21] it seems that interrupting this upda {because I thought it was stuck} took all the files/folders off the desktop & reset everything [18:22] I mean everything. It's like I've got a frsh install of xubuntu & firefox [18:22] I would like to have all my old stuff back......including settings [18:22] can anybody tell me how to do this ? [18:23] so unfair !! I didn't ask for this ! Darnit !! [18:24] I thought Xubuntu was stable ! [18:24] especially my old version [18:24] Xubuntu is stable, but we can't account for things a user did to the system. [18:25] All I did was to stop an update that seemed hung ! [18:25] Apparently none of us have seen this issue before. [18:25] ahhhhhhhh !! Darnit [18:26] Well,it's gotto be something someonew did to my pc when I wasn't looking or maybe it's just because my comps ram is crap [18:27] Doesn't Xubuntu have a way to like go back to a previous date & restore old settings & things ? [18:27] nope [18:28] You're kidding ! [18:28] That would be windows, unless you have installed an application that will do it [18:28] Argh ! [18:28] I haven't needed such an application myself since I started using Ubuntu and Xubuntu in 2005 [18:28] taking backups <- that's kidding [18:29] Shoot man there must be a way [18:29] Argh ! [18:29] calm down please [18:29] he he [18:29] hi'ya knome [18:29] hello [18:31] Okay.Well,I guess I'm stuck with doing things the slow way.Argh ! Oh,well [18:31] Thanks anyway everybody [18:31] Well then.Gotta go retrieve some more stuff [18:32] peace all [18:33] everyday occurrence now? [18:34] heh [18:39] #ubuntu [18:39] no, this is #xubuntu [18:40] * charlie-tca thinks thats our helpful knome ;-) [18:41] how can i change? [18:41] * knome doesn't think much [18:41] topebwana, /join #ubuntu [18:41] thanks [18:41] charlie-tca, see, i had that under a keystroke as well [18:41] I know [18:41] I was typing it [18:41] :) [18:41] t[tab] /join #u[tab] [21:02] hello again everybody [21:07] question...I had on my top panel a program called the "notes" plugin for the xfce4 desktop UNTIL a recent MAJOR disaster.Had alot of notes within thiis program.Had alot of things on the desktop also which disappeared which I have since found in another folder & returned to my desktop.Now...I would like to find all of those jotes also if possible. Can anyone possibly tell me where I might look for those ? [21:07] the notes? what about trying to reload the panel plugin? [21:08] confusious: should be in ~/.local/share/notes [21:08] Yeah,I tried that.Unforunately,it just gave me a new version of it [21:08] see the file mr_pouit pointed you to then [21:09] he's probably correct [21:09] So,mr_pouit,if I were to type this into a terminal I might be able to retrieve thos3e [21:09] ? [21:09] thank you. Will try [21:10] yeah, it should work, if the new instance you started didn't erase everythin :] [21:10] +g [21:10] Sorry what's +g mean ? [21:11] I got a readout that said "bash: /home/bobby/.local/share/notes: is a directory [21:11] " [21:11] everythin+g = everything (I forgot the 'g' ;) [21:12] confusious: yes, it's a directory, indeed. You should have inside one (or several) directories containing several notes [21:14] I get the same readout [21:15] I tried ~/.local/share/notes +g & ~/.local/share/notes g and the terminal just tells me that it's a directory [21:15] raah, sorry, forget about the 'g' [21:16] if you're not confident with xfce4-terminal, open thunar, hit ctrl+h to show hidden files/dirs, and go to .local/share/notes [21:17] tried that way first......am I supposed to put all of that in there ? including the squiggle & backslah etc ? [21:17] Hmmmmmmmm [21:17] Well, now, that's another idea [21:17] Let me try that [21:19] Shoot ! Looks like it may have all been erased [21:20] Shoot ! It looks like it may have all been erased [21:20] ooops [21:20] Could it be anywhere else mr-pouit ? [21:21] confusious: which version do you use? [21:22] Xubuntu..........uhmm 8.0 or 8.10 [21:22] I know. It's old [21:22] 8.04 or 8.10 [21:23] mmh, I think it's the only place [21:24] Oh,well. Thanks very much anyway.Atleast I was able to recover all those files/folderes that were on my desk [21:26] I'm so surprised by all of this. All this just because I interrupted a Firefox updqate because I thought it was stuck [21:28] Well, let me ask this of you guys....in the future,so this doesn't happen again....how can I make sure I don't lose all of that stuff ? At least the stuff on my desktop. Now,the only other thing is maybe trying to get all bookmarks back [21:28] I havea floppy {yes,I know} [21:29] Back up [21:29] check out the application called sbackup [21:30] See,at this point,I'm not even sure my entire system is working properly.Like the update feature that tells me when there's updates available [21:30] Thank you [21:31] If it isn't working, you will get an error message of some kind [21:31] Heck I'm not even sure my floppy is working.I saw an instance of it somewhere & it was greyed out [21:31] Well, thanks again everybody [21:32] It will grey out if there is not a disk in it [23:42] hi guys. i'm installing xubuntu on a machine thru a usb. i have a 1080p hdtv as my monitor that's connected thru a vga cable. when xubuntu (9.10 live, x64) tries to load the menu, my monitor goes blue and says 'unsupported format'. i think xubuntu is pushing 1920x1080 or higher, which my monitor can't handle. (it only likes 1920x1080 from hdmi) [23:43] is there a way to force xubuntu to output at a lower resolution when showing the menu? i get the 'unsupported format' before i get to any command prompt / GUI screen. [23:43] Try hitting F4 and choosing safe graphics [23:43] thanks! i'll try that right now. [23:49] hrm.. pressing f4 didn't do much. i was able to get to a command prompt by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 / ctrl+alt+f2 [23:49] is there a way to start the installer with safe graphics from the prompt? [23:54] anyone? :/
