gimbalhi, got one question about ubuntustudio: does it provide any more up-to-date packages than a regular 'stable' more-upstream ubuntu release would?00:18
gimbalconsidering migrating my desktop from Debian Lenny to Ubuntu, just want to look into the Ubuntustudio distro before making that move00:18
gimbaland that's the sole question I have about it00:18
holsteinhey gimbal00:20
holsteinbasically00:20
gimbalhulloa00:20
holsteinubuntustudio is just software00:20
gimbalyah00:20
holsteinyou can add it to a vanilla ubuntu install00:21
gimbaland marketing kinda, I'd pitch in, heh00:21
holsteinpulls from the same repo00:21
holsteinyou do audio production in lenny?00:22
gimbalstarting to00:22
holsteincool00:22
gimbalbugged that there's no ardour in lenny00:22
holsteinyou might want to look at 64studio00:23
holsteinyou can add AFAIK00:23
gimbalalready had to reinstall after a grub upgrade broke my boot sequence, under the 'unstable' branch heh00:23
gimbalcool00:23
holsteinthe 64studio repos to lenny00:23
holsteinthe newer 64studio 3.x is hardy based00:23
gimbalhey that's nice to see - what I can glance of their business model on short review anyways, heh00:24
holsteinbut i think they still maintain an older repo for debain00:24
holsteindebian*00:24
holsteinnot a lot of support though00:24
holsteinhe IRC channel is dead00:24
holsteinand i had mixed luck with the mailinglist00:24
holsteincant really beat ubuntu when it come to that :)00:25
gimbali c00:25
holsteingimbal: /j #opensourcemusicians :)00:25
gimbalahh heh; just kind of researching an installation right now, and shooting the bulll; got more admin stuff to do about that, before I can go too much further about it00:27
holsteinwell, good luck00:28
holsteinubuntustudio is well maintained and stable00:28
holsteinyou will enjoy :)00:29
gimbalthanks00:31
gimbalso it looks like I could put ubuntu and the ubuntustudio bundles onto my  laptop, and connect  it to my dekstop via netjack01:05
gimbal...if I can just figure out how to get the hdmi output working on the laptop, it's what's connecting it to the monitor01:06
gimbalunder linux; just thinking out loud I guess01:07
claybustrubuntu 9.10 / ck804 sound card w/ alsa. alsa finds it, oob installation plays other stuff. jackd gives bus error attempting to control device hw:0 and that's all it will tell me even if verbose is set on. bus error results in all other apps refusing to start after that. Most of the howto/helps I've found are ancient. Is there an identified problem here?02:47
Blank__ive found that jackd/alsa is broken in 9.1002:49
Blank__:(02:49
claybustrI should say 'well known problem with well known solution'.02:49
claybustrI was really hoping you were going to say ck804 rather than alsa. I got an m-audio 2496 in a box back home.02:52
MononaJack is getting tons of xruns before I even run any other programs.  I've been doing a bunch of troubleshooting (some of which is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1407904) and I'm pretty stuck.  How can I test if it's a hardware issue or rt-kernel issue or something like that?04:34
holsteinthat is a good questino Monona04:37
holsteinwhat is the sound deviec?04:37
holsteindevice?04:37
holstein*04:37
MononaIntel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)04:38
holsteinwhat kind of latency are you expecting?04:38
holsteinwhat are you jack settings?04:39
holsteini would suggest staring there04:39
holsteinrelaxing those settings04:39
MononaI'd take any latency, frankly, if I could get rid of these xruns.04:39
Blank__have you tried increasing your buffer to 2048 or above04:40
Monona1024 Frames/period, Sample rate 44100, 2 periods/buffer04:40
holsteintry increasing those settings04:41
holsteinuntil you get a latency of around 50+ ms04:41
holsteinto test04:41
holsteinyou might not want to have that all the time04:41
Blank__also what are you using to configure jackd, as if you've got the -rt kernel you can enable realtime04:41
holsteinbut that might help troubleshoot04:42
MononaI get  ALSA: cannot set period size to 2048 frames for playback04:42
Blank__:|04:42
holsteingood call Blank__04:42
holsteinthe RT ckeckbox04:42
Mononaqjackctl, RT checkbox, checked!04:42
Blank__was that checked before?04:43
MononaLatency at 1024 is frames/period is 46.4 ms.04:43
MononaYup.04:43
Blank__oh...04:43
Blank__it could be hardware interrupts messing things up...04:43
Blank__try unchecking RT and see what happens04:44
holsteinhell04:44
Blank__:p04:44
MononaOutput of cat /proc/interrupts here: http://pastebin.com/7uxV6UqJ04:44
holsteinyou could try a generic kernel and no checkbox04:44
Blank__so that's on IRQ 16...04:45
Blank__how many usb things do you have plugged in04:45
Blank__thats basically the only other thing of note on that interrupt04:46
Monona3 USB things: keyboard, mouse, external HD04:46
holstein16: 2576519 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi uhci_hcd:usb4, HDA Intel, ivtv004:46
Blank__so xruns just idling?04:46
holsteinthat the one?04:46
holsteinnot ideal04:46
Blank__yeah, HDA Intel04:46
Mononaholstein: As far as I can tell.04:47
holsteini had a laptop04:47
MononaHow do I move it to different IRQ?04:47
holsteinwith usb on the firewire port04:47
holsteinand when i had anything in that USB port04:47
holsteinxruns and crashes04:47
MononaBlank__: Yeah, we're talking multiple xruns/second without any other programs.04:47
holsteinno way to change it in the bios on my machine04:47
holsteinMonona: i think this is plausible04:48
holsteinyou should look in the bios04:48
holsteinand see if you can change it04:48
Blank__since linux is plug n' play you can theoretically reassign IRQs04:48
Blank__independent of the bios04:48
holsteini did not think of that04:48
MononaI know approximately zero about the bios, but I'm happy to learn.04:48
MononaHow would I do this?04:48
holsteini just assumed i was stuck with it that way04:48
Blank__the bios on my gigabyte is an absolute pain, and due to it my firewire soundcard drops samples randomly in windows, but works perfectly in linux04:49
holsteinMonona: i would google for whatever machine you got04:49
holsteinand see how get into the bios04:49
holsteinthat would be easy04:50
Blank__it's probably an award bios or phoenix04:50
holsteineasy enough04:50
Blank__probably pressing DEL, ESC, or F1 at startup04:50
holsteinmight say04:50
holsteinwhen you start up the computer04:50
holstein'press F1 to enter set-up"04:51
holsteinsomething like that04:51
MononaYeah, that I know.  But what to do when I'm there, that's the question.04:51
holsteinhmmm04:51
holsteinmight say IRQ settings04:51
holsteininternal devices04:51
holsteinonboard devices04:52
holsteinsomething like that04:52
holsteinIF its even there04:52
MononaHm...I'll try, but failing that, what can I do in Linux?04:53
holsteini just learned that you could change the settings from Blank__ :)04:54
holsteintheoretically04:54
Monona:)04:54
MononaAlright, I'm gonna give it a shot in BIOS.04:55
MononaI'll be back...04:55
Mononaholstein, Blank__:05:09
holsteinwhats the good news Monona ?05:09
MononaRestarted with regular kernel.  Nothing in BIOS was useful.  Less xruns (still some), but I've got this crackly sound, almost like the internal mix is clipping.  Alsamixer looks ok, tho.05:11
MononaI'm kinda hoping that changing the IRQ might sort this out, cuz I'm stuck.05:11
holsteinit looks plausible05:12
holstein16: 2576519 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi uhci_hcd:usb4, HDA Intel, ivtv005:12
holsteinhaving 4 things there05:12
holsteinnot ideal05:12
MononaRight, I just have to change HDA Intel to IRQ 13 or something, maybe?05:13
holsteinyeah05:13
MononaThe lower the IRQ, the higher the priority, right?05:13
holsteinoff by itself if possible05:13
holsteinwould be great05:13
holsteinim not sure about the priority of the numbers05:13
holsteini just no you dont want a bunch of other stuff on the same one with your audio card05:14
holsteinOH05:14
holsteinif you get an actual interface05:14
MononaMakes sense.05:14
holsteina usb interface or something05:14
holstein1394 is with you ethernet05:15
MononaI have a M-Audio Ozone with an onboard sound card, but it's a whole different process to get that working.05:15
holsteinyou got a few kindof isolated USB ports05:15
holsteinbut usb is not ideal either05:15
MononaLike an external sound card?05:16
holsteineah05:16
holsteinyeah*05:16
holsteininternal sound cards are not great anyways05:16
holsteinif you had access to something you could try out05:17
holsteinmaybe something from bestbuy you could return05:17
MononaI'll probably end up getting one, but I'd like to try to get this working on its own.05:17
holsteinhttp://www.amazon.com/PreSonus-FireBox-Firewire-Recording-Interface/dp/B0006VYH1Q05:18
holsteinsomething like this05:18
holsteinwould really step up your rig05:18
holsteinand grow with you somewhat05:18
MononaIs it Linux-friendly?05:19
holsteini got the presonus firepod05:20
holsteinit works great05:20
holsteini would search around05:20
holsteinlook at the ffado site and forum for it05:20
holsteinand make sure05:20
holsteinthere are some extra hoops to hop through for firewire devices05:21
holsteinBUT i think its worth it05:21
holsteincompared to a USB device05:21
MononaThis is a new computer, and I'm not sure it's even got firewire.05:22
Monona(new to me, that is)05:22
holstein20: 87367 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ohci1394, eth005:22
MononaThat's my firewire?05:23
holsteini think ohci1394 is your firewire05:23
MononaGood to know.05:23
MononaAlright, I'm in the regular ubuntu channel trying to change the IRQ.  Let's see how that goes.05:23
holsteinCOOL05:24
holsteinMonona: come to #opensourcemusicians when you get a chance...05:24
holsteingood luck05:24
zekohi guys, just being curious, i just installed ubuntustudio-desktop in ubuntu, and i was expecting to get to choose Gnome,KDE, or ubuntustudio at the login screen, or is Ubuntustudio just a collection of AV packages13:22
zekoi typed in terminal as ' apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop'13:23
astraljavazeko: apt-get install usplash-theme-ubuntustudio13:26
astraljavano sorry, misunderstood13:26
zekoastraljava: i have the theme13:26
astraljavaapt-get install ubuntustudio-gdm-theme13:26
astraljavaRight.13:26
zekoastraljava: i was thinking if i could get it as an option like GNOME, KDE.13:27
astraljavaDon't know about that, perhaps you can just select it when at the greeter.13:27
zekoastraljava: it wasnt there.13:28
zekoastraljava: is it a collection of packages and apps? or a separate distro?13:29
astraljavaBoth, the packages are freely available for all ubuntu users though.13:32
jussi01zeko: its a collection of packages with some nice default settings.13:42
zekojussi01 : yeah got it, it has created a ' Audio production' Menu at sound and video secion, i think i need to install the gdm theme for the look , Thanks13:44
jussi01!vanilla13:44
ubottuTo install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation13:44
Zusanyone familiar with software studios like ableton "LIVE!" and Reason?13:58
RemunJ66Hi to all. This is my first chat on #ubuntustudio16:06
