[02:22] hello all [02:24] i'm all screwed up on my installation, i had ubuntustudio installed 3 days ago... then i changed partitions, and it messed it up [02:25] so i reinstalled using ubuntu i386 and there's nothing set for audio at all, so beginning over...i see on the website there is a way to upgrade this to ubuntu studio.. so I'm ready to do that :) [02:25] anyone here able to help me with my setup? [02:26] am i live here? [14:22] hi [14:22] i need a replacement for cubase - any ideas? [14:42] raven: remind me what cubase does again? [14:43] * jussi01 guesses ardour... [20:05] how's it going guys? [20:05] not bad v-star [20:06] any of you using...I hate to say it because I am aware of their hostility...a MOTU interface? === v-star is now known as vstar [20:07] i got a presonus firepod [20:07] is that firewire? [20:07] yes [20:07] I also have a m-audio firewire solo [20:07] neither of which seems to be working with the ffado drivers [20:07] even though both are shown as "known to work" [20:08] drag [20:08] yeah i was just checking http://www.ffado.org/?q=devicesupport/list&filter0=motu&filter1=&op2=OR [20:08] did you have to tweak stuff to get the firepod working? [20:08] i use to [20:09] now its plug and play pretty much [20:09] I haven't been digging much into the issue yet, I was really hoping someone had encountered it. [20:09] have either of them ever worked under linux for you? [20:09] so much for quick fixes ;) [20:09] I haven't tried. [20:09] OK [20:09] SO [20:09] up until recently, I hadn't considered linux as a studio option [20:09] you launch qjackctl [20:10] and run it [20:10] and no luck? [20:10] errors pop up? [20:10] I'll have to look at it later today. [20:10] not near the studio box right now and no remote access configured. [20:10] but you try using jack right? [20:10] negative. [20:10] OH [20:10] thats probably the issue [20:10] so, just use qjack and try to configure it that way? [20:10] yup [20:10] you can run... [20:11] sudo qjackctl [20:11] which is why there is a section about jack on the FAQ [20:11] to troubleshoot for permission errors [20:11] gotcha [20:11] you dont really need/want to run jack as root [20:11] BUT there is some permissions tweaking to do [20:12] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation [20:12] due to the nature of what it is, I can understand that. [20:12] i think most of the tweaking is on that site [20:12] or linked to it [20:12] BUT [20:12] just do sudo at first [20:12] then you'll know if its working without pulling too much hari out :) [20:13] hair* [20:13] ALSO, join #opensourcemusicians if your interested [20:13] I probably would have had better luck if I hadn't done the initial install in the wee hours of the morning. ;) [20:13] lots of jack/ardour and other talk there [20:13] awesome. [20:13] I have never used ardour before now [20:14] jack and ardour are quite amazing really [20:14] what were you using before? [20:14] DAW wise? [20:14] I've been a linux admin for years and I didn't realize until I was browsing through stuff a few weeks ago just how mature some of the products have become. [20:14] cubase and occasionally FL studio [20:15] I had considered going to a mac and Logic until I stumbled across ubuntu studio [20:15] i had cubase on xp for a long time [20:15] jack is the learning curve for linux really [20:16] but, i really like the flexibility jack makes possible [20:16] i guess it depends on what you trying to do production wise [20:17] the 5.1 audio editing is still behind [20:17] and some video [20:17] I'm converting a whole room in the house to a studio for my material [20:17] and lots of new midi synth coming out all the time relly [20:17] reall* [20:17] really* [20:18] BUT if your multitracking audio for a stereo master [20:18] things are more than far enough along for that [20:18] That will serve my purposes [20:18] and lots of other electronic music too [20:18] ardour will be getting MIDI soon [20:19] 3.x release [20:19] I'm a traditionalist [20:19] I play about 9 instruments [20:19] COOL [20:19] so I use very little midi [20:19] well, you wont miss a thing then :) [20:19] plugins are awesome [20:20] I haven't played with anything yet due to the interface issue [20:20] I'm gonna dig into jack tonight, though [20:20] we'll get your sorted out [20:20] doing a little research....netjack....have you used it? [20:20] you* [20:20] does it work well? [20:20] yup [20:20] i set up a test rig [20:20] with my main desktop audio box [20:20] and a laptop [20:21] works well [20:21] Have you tried it over the internet? [20:21] you know [20:21] i tried [20:21] massive failure? [20:21] and the guy that i was trying it with and i never got it going [20:22] hmmm [20:22] theres a helpful dev in #jack though [20:22] and he gave us suggestions [20:22] I might give it a whirl. [20:22] and we never got around to trying it again [20:22] I'd like to polish my long distance collab [20:22] have you checked out ninjam? [20:22] http://ninjam.com/ [20:23] However, the local network is great too, since I can get the main box out of my recording area [20:23] kinda cool [20:23] i used it (netjack) to slave off some softsynths to the laptop [20:23] kind of a poor mans dual core [20:23] locally it worked great [20:24] im sure it would do as well over the net too [20:24] we just had a network issue [20:24] i think [20:25] ninjam looks like the hotness [20:25] I can try a server on this box and see if I can get it working. [20:25] its interesting [20:25] the way it integrates network lag in [20:25] and its pretty easy to get going [20:25] they got test servers up [20:26] if you just want to try the client and get in there [20:26] and theres a ninjam server on somebodys box over at #opensourcemusicians [20:26] yeah, I might dig into that first and come back to the server [20:26] this box is on pretty high bandwidth and I have another host as well [20:26] but its been a while since its been used :/ [20:27] I joined that channel [20:27] holstein, you are a breath of fresh air on irc, btw [20:28] :) === vstar is now known as VehementStar [20:29] too much hostility on IRC anymore [20:30] can be [20:30] i dont understand [20:30] wy [20:30] why* [20:33] I'm not really sure. [20:33] artistically inclinded people tend to be a little more laid back, though ;) [20:34] even the geeky ones
