spacitymedicis there anyone here who can at least answer me?00:46
kkathmanspacitymedic:  what are you wanting to do?00:47
spacitymedici donwloaded some png images. they are supposed to be used to edit the look of that panel with the main menu on it00:47
kkathmanspacitymedic:  you can drag things to and from the bar itself.00:47
spacitymedic instead of an opaque bar... i can have an animal print one00:47
spacitymedic if I drag one... will it change the look of the bar?00:47
kkathmannot really00:48
spacitymedicOk tried dragging it and it doesnt work...00:48
valleycould some one please verify that kde has been hacked?00:49
valleysorry i mean kde-look00:49
kkathmanspacitymedic:  but if you check the the ubuntu/kubuntu forums there are numerous posts that tell you haw to do some of the things you're wanting to do00:49
spacitymedicright. i have looked00:49
kkathmanwell, here's one for instance: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=81181200:50
kkathmanIt's all about finding the right png file to change00:50
spacitymedic i have gone into settings00:51
spacitymedic i have read adn read forum after forum. and on kde-look there is nothing regarding how to use the kickers that are on there.00:51
spacitymedicok...00:51
kkathmanspacitymedic: /usr/share/apps/kicker/wallpapers/   check that out00:51
spacitymedicput thati nto terminal?00:52
kkathmanspacitymedic:  its a directory of course00:52
kkathmanspacitymedic:  you're familiar with directories right?00:52
kkathmanJust unpack whatever archive you downloaded to the directory you want and then right click on the taskbar > Configure Panel > Appearance > check Enable Background Image > click on the button with the little white thing on it and a dialog to pick the image will come up.00:53
spacitymedicNOT REALLY. still learning. sorry about the caps00:53
kkathmanagain, these can be found in the forums00:54
kkathmanspacitymedic:  then I'd suggest that you not worry a lot about customizing quite yet, until you kinda learn the basics :)00:54

jmichaelxi am trying to keep ~/Music on my desktop and ~/Music on my girlfriend's desktop sync'ed. is there a way to do this with rsync *without* preserving ownership? right now, when i do this, i have to chown -R the directory when i'm finished.03:14
DragnslcrI don't think rsync preserves ownership by default. What options are you giving it?03:14
jmichaelxDragnslcr: i generally use '-av'. i know that -a preserves ownership & permissions, among other things.03:16
DragnslcrThere you go then03:17
[BG]ZloboMiR!purexfce03:18
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »03:18
[BG]ZloboMiR!Xubuntu03:19
ubottuXubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce instead of !GNOME. More info at http://www.xubuntu.org and http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/ - To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop » - Join #xubuntu for support - See also: !Ubuntu and !Xubuntu-Channels03:19
jmichaelxDragnslcr: sorry, i was disconnected. do you believe it is likely that if i ran something like 'rsync user1@*:/dir user2@*:/dir', it might allow user2 to access the files without need for chowning afterward?03:23
DragnslcrFor example: if you want to use -a (--archive) but don't want -o (--owner), instead of converting -a into -rlptgD, you could specify -a --no-o (or -a --no-owner)03:25
DragnslcrThat's from the man page03:25
jmichaelxok, i honestly did look at the man page, but obviously missed that03:25
DragnslcrYeah, it's pretty far down03:31
Dragnslcrrsync's man page is kinda long03:31
DragnslcrI probably wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't right after the -a section03:31
jmichaelxDragnslcr: interestingly, i stopped rsync mid-stream, and restarted using '-a --no-owner'. it picked right up where it left off, but the files it has sync'ed over since i specified no owner appear to have the same ownership/permissions as the files i copied without that flag03:40
jmichaelxi should probably mention that i am rsync'ing from and to root on both machines03:41

ilter_Hello. I use an external HD on Kubuntu 9.10. My external HD has 2 ntfs partition. I use first of them but i can't mount the second one. How can i solve this problem?18:50
arch0njwilter_: I usually end up using qtparted or gparted to get some insight into the differnt partitions.  You might need to manually mount it.18:53
ilter_Hello arch0njw. What is qtparted or gparted? And how can i mount it manually?18:55
arch0njwThose are partition editors.  I know there is a way to get that information from the command-line, but I like the purdy UIs. :-)18:55
arch0njwYou can install qtparted through KPackageKit.  That should take care of all of the dependencies for you.18:56
arch0njwYou can then use those to figure out the device name of each partition (e.g., /dev/sdf1, /dev/sdf2, etc.).18:56
arch0njw!mount18:57
ubottuPartitioning programs: !GParted or !QtParted (also "man mkfs" for formatting) - Mounting partitions in Kubuntu, go to System Settings -> Advanced Tab -> Disks & Filesystem. See also !fstab and !DiskMounter18:57
arch0njwIf you need to manually mount you can mount with a command like: "sudo mount /dev/sdf2 /media/other-partition".  But you need to manually create /media/other-partition for that to work.  This is where !DiskMounter and automounting is so nice.18:58
mefisto__ilter_: there may be errors on the partition that won't mount. the ntfs-3g driver that is used when mounting ntfs is conservative and will not mount an unclean partition, to prevent further corruption18:58
ilter_ubottu: there isn't Disk & Filesystem icon under advanced tab.18:59

ilter_No i don't have "partition management" icon.19:02
mefisto__ilter_: install partitionmanager if you want that icon19:03

arch0njwOkay.  I suggest installing partitionmanager.  You can do that through KPackageKit.19:03
ilter_arch0njw: I'm trying command which you gave.19:03
arch0njwilter_: that command will not work19:03
ubottupartitionmanager (source: partitionmanager): partition manager for KDE. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.0.0-0ubuntu3 (karmic), package size 726 kB, installed size 2848 kB19:04
arch0njwilter_: that was an example.  You need to use something like partitionmanager, or the command-line equivalent, to know the exact name of the device.19:04
ilter_ok i'm downloading partitionmanager by apt-get install.19:05

arch0njwilter_: partitionmanager is open and you see yoru drives in the upper left?19:10
txukiemaybe im too dumb but cant figure out a way to add a new activity to the default ones (newspaper and applications)19:10
ilter_it seems the second partition name is sdb6.19:10
arch0njwilter_: okay.  So you are looking at the drive with two ntfs partitions.  :)  great.  You can tell what is mounted by running this at the CLI:  df -kh19:11
txukieI want to add a new activity called maybe "social" with facebook and widgets like that19:11
arch0njwilter_:  If you do not see sdb6 mounted anywhere, then we can try mounting it.  However, as previously mentioned, the ntfs-3g utils might not mount it if they detect anything they interpret as a corruption19:12
arch0njwilter_: First things first.  did 'df -kh' show sdb6 as being mounted anywhere?19:12
geniiGuest7994: Please stop with the CTCP19:14
ilter_Yes "df -kh" shows sd6 but it's already mounted. And it's path /home. I realized that it's my own HD not a USB partition. Sorry :(19:15
mefisto__the ntfs-3g.probe command might be of help19:15
ilter_So still i don't know exact name of second partition of USB drive.19:15
arch0njwilter_: let's identify that first using partitionmanager.19:16
arch0njwilter_: in the upper left, you'll see your drives.  Look through them until you find one with two ntfs partitions.  That sounds like the one you will want.19:16
ilter_Ok but now there isn't anyone with two ntfs partitions on partitionmanager.19:17
arch0njwilter_: the USB drive is conncted and mounted?19:17
ilter_Yes it's connected and it's first partition has already mounted.19:18

at2500okay. with my msi wind u100 and kubuntu 9.10 my microphone wont work. it does make noises if i knock against it, but its not possible to get any useful sound. if anyone knows how the resolve the issue, please help  me ;)22:16
Matissethis sounds like a hardware problem actually22:18
at2500it isnt. the mic works with win xp22:19
at2500i read about the problem, but i didnt find any solutions.22:19
Matissebut you could try to capture something with audacity and listen if it sounds like it should22:19
at2500i'll try that.22:21
alejo_<at2500>22:25
at2500okay. so this is a skype-related problem, audacity works perfectly. thanks a lot22:35
Matisseat2500, look if theres a new skype version22:47
at2500i just installed the newest skype directly from the website. no changes. it seems to be a skype/pulseaudio problem22:49
Matissei think disabling pulseaudio ( shell: /etc/init.d/pulse stop   or something) never makes problems22:50
Matissetry it22:50
MatisseI could always still playback music after stopping or killing pulse22:50

at2500err. okay. question: does or does not kubuntu 9.10 use pulseaudio? because i think on my desktop machine it is installed automatically22:57
mefisto__at2500: it's not installed by default22:57
at2500okay. how does software mixing then work in kubuntu? what daemon does it?22:58
mefisto__at2500: phonon with xine backend. actually, you could try using the mplayer phonon backend instead22:59
at2500so skype doesnt work in the newest version because it requieres pulseaudio?23:00
mefisto__at2500: install phonon-backend-mplayer and change backend in systemsettings > multimedia23:00
at2500what for?23:00
mefisto__at2500: it may solve your problem. phonon normally uses the xine backend, but you could try with the mplayer backend instead23:01
at2500isnt the mplayer backend still under heavy development it doesnt work good?23:02
mefisto__at2500: I don't know, but it's working fine for me23:03
slow-motionn823:03
at2500mh. phonon-backend-mplayer doesnt exist. thats sad.23:04
mefisto__at2500: ok, I must be getting it from a ppa repo23:04
=== dad_ is now known as Guest90664
at2500oh man, skype for linux sucks.23:08
mefisto__at2500: here's where I'm getting it, if you want to try: https://launchpad.net/~samrog131/+archive/ppa/+packages?start=75&batch=7523:09
at2500oh man, skype for linux sucks.i'll try that23:11
at2500nah, with the mplayer backend its still the same. i think the missing pulseaudio is the problem.23:15
mefisto__at2500: what about skype settings? do you have "allow skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels" on?23:17
at2500no i disabled it and took the same settings that work in audacity23:17
at2500i am searching for a packaged skype-static-oss23:17
mefisto__at2500: disabled pulseaudio?23:18
at2500its not installed ;) i think that is the problem, because on the skype website it says it needs pulseaudio23:18
kimoHello23:33

kimoHi23:36
kimocan I Help me23:36
kimoi want to see if Kubuntu can be runing in my 512 ram old pc23:36
mefisto__at2500: look at the 3rd post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1416539  that worked for me, I could see all audio hardware in skype settings, instead of just pulseaudio23:44
at2500mefisto: i dont have pulseaudio installed.23:45
bazhang!resetpanels23:45
ubottuTo reset the gnome panel to defaults, type this in a !terminal: « gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel »23:45
at2500i already can configure skype exactly the way i do it with audacity23:46
at2500mefisto: but if i do so, the skype sound is blurred and fuzzy and not understandable. in audacity or when i unmute it in kde i can hear me clearly23:47
mefisto__at2500: what about kmix settings? do you have a mic boost in kmix?23:55
at2500_yes. and its activated. if i just unmute it, i can hear me perfectly. the problem only appear when using skype.23:58
mefisto__so kmix mic boost on or off, it sounds the same in skype?23:59
