yax51Hi!! Ok I'm trying to play Elderscolls: oblivion on ubuntu 9.10....I have wine, and found a solution, but I don't really understand whats going on....00:00
yax51http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=34976400:00
yax51would someone be able to walk me through this00:01
jgoguenyax51: I'm not familiar with Oblivion, but I can try. What are you having trouble understanding?00:02
yax51the solution....I am not sure how to implement it....I went through it, but the part with the iso confused me as well as the cab extract part...00:04
yax51and on step 2 with the packages...00:05
jgoguenyax51: Sorry for the delay...did you go to the link at the top of the first post?00:21
yax51yeah, but I am not sure if I am doing it right, some of the instructions don't make much sense to me.....but then again I am a total noob at this....00:23
jgoguenyax51: That's fine :)  Were you able to run the part with 'winecfg'?00:25
yax51yes, but what about the cab extract and putting the dll into the wine/system32 folder?00:26
jgoguenyax51: You may not need to do that.  If you run "wine --version" without the quote marks, what does it say?00:28
yax51it says command not found00:29
jgoguenOK, but you were able to go through winecfg properly?00:29
yax51yes00:29
jgoguenOK, what exactly did you type into your terminal window?  It should have been: wine --version00:30
yax51yax51@yax51-Unbuntu:~$ wine--version00:30
yax51wine--version: command not found00:31
jgoguenYou missed a space there :)00:31
jgoguenwine --version00:31
yax51ooops forgot a space....wine 1.0.100:31
jgoguen:)00:31
jgoguenOK, second00:33
jgoguenyax51: OK, do you have your Oblivion CD in the drive?00:34
yax51yes00:35
jgoguenAlright, so enter this command exactly as it is here: cabextract /media/cdrom/DXREDIST/Aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86.cab00:37
jgoguenthat should all be on one line00:37
jgoguenSpace between cabextract and the long path name00:37
jgoguenLet me know what it says, if it says anything.00:37
yax51yax51@yax51-Unbuntu:~$ cabextract /media/cdrom/DXREDIST/Aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86.cab00:37
yax51/media/cdrom/DXREDIST/Aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86.cab: WARNING; possible 6848 extra bytes at end of file.00:37
yax51Extracting cabinet: /media/cdrom/DXREDIST/Aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86.cab00:37
yax51  extracting d3dx9_27_x86.cat00:37
yax51  extracting d3dx9_27.dll00:37
yax51  extracting aug2005_d3dx9_27_x86.inf00:37
yax51  extracting d3dx9_27_w9x.inf00:37
yax51  extracting d3dx9_27_x86.inf00:37
yax51All done, no errors.00:38
jgoguenyax51: OK good, now this command: cp d3dx9_27.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/00:38
jgoguenAgain, all one line, space after "cp" and a second space after "d3dx9_27.dll"00:38
jgoguenThat shouldn't give any output00:39
yax51done00:39
yax51should I do the winecfg and the appropriate changes?00:40
jgoguenHave you done the registry editing part yet?00:40
yax51no00:40
jgoguenOK, well enter the command "regedit" and we'll go through that00:41
yax51thats the wine regedit.exe?00:41
jgoguenYep00:41
yax51ok00:42
=== Hellow_ is now known as Hellow
jgoguenNow, go to the registry key it says to, HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Wine / Direct3D00:43
jgoguenIf you don't see the Direct3D folder under Wine that's OK00:43
yax51ok, I don't see the Direct3d folder00:43
jgoguenOK, right-click on the Wine folder and choose New -> Key. When asked for a name, give it Direct3D00:44
jgoguenThe capitalization may be important so make sure to enter it exactly as Direct3D00:44
yax51ok finished00:45
jgoguenNow, you see where it says on the page to create the three registry keys?00:46
yax51yes00:46
jgoguenGo ahead and create the first two of them, we need to do some work to find the value for the third00:47
yax51so I create value and name iteach of those?00:47
yax51*it each00:47
jgoguenYes, create a new String value, name it what's in the left column and give it the value of what's in the right column00:48
yax51ok00:48
jgoguenNow, for the third value, we need to do a little work to get the correct number00:49
jgoguenOpen a new Terminal window and enter this command, let me know what it says: lspci | grep VGA00:49
yax5101:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9800M GS] (rev a1)00:50
jgoguenK good :)  Now this command: lspci -v -s 01:00.0 | grep prefetchable00:51
yax51Memory at fc000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]00:51
yax51Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]00:51
yax51Memory at fa000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32M]00:51
jgoguenAnd last, this command: uname -m00:52
yax51i68600:52
jgoguenk, so now go ahead and create that third key it says, and use "256" as the value for it00:53
yax51ok00:53
jgoguenThat should do it for you.  If you close Regedit you should be able to play Oblivion.00:54
jgoguenI have to run for a few minutes, but I'll be back.  Let me know how it goes, or if you still can't get it00:54
yax51ok thanks!00:54
jgoguenNo problem :)00:54
yax51VICTORY!!!01:16
yax51ok it works....the only thing is that it's not full screen but that something I can live with01:21
jgoguenyax51: Awesome :)01:33
Benny1983Hello I am new I was hoping someone might be able to help me get started please!!!01:33
Benny1983I have just installed and am completely stuck!01:33
jgoguenBenny1983: What are you having problems with?01:33
Benny1983i have installed ubuntu 9.04 (i think)01:34
Benny1983but I haven't used linux before, well apart from the last 2 days on YDL01:34
Benny1983but i have done the install, and I want to install vlc player only I dont have permission.01:35
jgoguenOK, well when you installed the system, it should have asked you for your name, your username, and a password.01:35
Benny1983i have tried the command sudo but I can't make it work. from what I have read so fare I need to be a root01:35
Benny1983when I installed i set up an account "benny" with password1123 etc01:36
jgoguenPlease never put your password in a public area :)01:36
Benny1983thats not it thats just a example01:36
Benny1983lol01:36
jgoguenOK good  :)01:36
jgoguenI'm just slightly paranoid about security ;)01:37
jgoguenSo when you go to install software through either the Ubuntu Software Centre or through Synaptic Package Manager, it should ask you for a password.  It's asking for the same password you use to log in with.01:37
Benny1983on YDL i set up a root account, ubuntu didnt ask me to so i have no idea how to make apt-get which I think is what ubuntu uses instead of yum? if im wrong sorry, as i say only been trying the last 2 days01:38
Benny1983I've tried that it says i dont have permission01:38
jgoguenOK, do you have a terminal window open now?01:38
Benny1983yes01:39
Benny1983I have a promp benny@ubuntu-ps3:~$01:39
Benny1983prompt*01:39
jgoguenOK, try this command, you should get a string of numbers: id -G01:39
Benny1983it returned "1000"01:40
jgoguenThat's all?  Try this one: id -nG01:40
Benny1983Oh! btw I forgot to mention and it might be important, im using a PS301:41
Benny1983yes jsut one line01:41
jgoguenI don't know if that's important or not, I don't know how the PS3 port works :)01:41
jgoguenBut if all you get is the one number, that explains why you can't install software; you aren't listed as an administrator01:42
Benny1983id -nG gives only "benny"01:42
Benny1983FYI YDL 6.2 worked pretty well right out the box so to speak, this seems even better ifi can get myself going. but i broke all the YDL repositories follwing guides on the web trying to update things.01:44
jgoguenOK, I would recommend going to #ubuntu-ps3, maybe they can help you better01:44
jgoguenYea, the problem with guides on the Internet is some of them are just completely wrong :)01:44
jgoguenBenny1983: I checked the Ubuntu PS3 port home page, the official channel for that port is #ubuntu-ps301:45
Benny1983yeah lots seemed to conflict with where the repos should point. i think there must be a right place for them to point but every guide had something completley different...01:45
jgoguenIf there's something different about the PS3 port, they would know better there01:45
Benny1983Ok well I will go and check it out.01:45
Benny1983Thank you for pointing me in the right direction01:46
jgoguenNot a problem, feel free to drop back in for anything else01:46
Benny1983thanks, my email harrison-b@o2.co.uk if you ever want to ask me to help with anything. not that I know anything about linux but if i can be of any assistance another way. very much appreciated!01:47
Benny1983+jgoguen there dont seem to be many people on it, maybe it's not a very active chat.01:50
jgoguenBenny1983: They could just be idle...two of them are set away01:51
jgoguenThat happens in here sometimes too, there's lots of people around but it does happen that no one is actually at their computer01:52
Benny1983Do you know where there is an forum I could post this question to that gets read frequently?01:53
Benny1983to do everything in YDL i was using terminal and using "su" and yum to install. I cant get anything going on this at the moment and it's quite annoying. however I'm quite impressed that in the  maybe 6 hours of using linux01:55
jgoguenYou could try http://psubuntu.com01:55
Benny1983I have got it to recognise my ipod. im hoping that I will be able to back up my ipod to an external hdd and keep the filenames as they were named on my ipod not the truncated ones they give me01:57
Benny1983THANK YOU!!01:57
Benny1983I will search their forums before I post hopefully someone will have had a similar problem before me.01:58
jgoguenHopefully they can help you, I don't know how their setup may differ01:59
Benny1983tbh i think it is pretty good as a standard install, I havent touched any settings because of this one issue and as standard ubuntu has picked up my wired connection, recognised my hard ipod and read the database, and im able to use the net to speak to you!02:02
Benny1983YDL i had to fiddle with, i chose that as aparently its optimised for ps3, It worked but it wasn't as user ffirendly.02:03
Benny1983one more question +jgoguen, what would you search for for my issue? i'm not sure if i am asking the right question. I need to add myself to the admin list?02:08
jgoguenSpecifically, you need to add your username to the adm group02:10
jgoguenSince you have no way to get admin access from in Ubuntu, you'll need to find out how to boot into single user mode and edit /etc/group and /etc/gshadow from the command line02:11
Benny1983OK well I'll search around that topic first then, thanks. all the tutorials I have seen use a "sudo" command, I dont think user "benny" has access to sudo anyway so thats kaput for a start!02:12
jgoguenYep...although as the first user created, you should have been added to the adm group right away...hopefully someone on the psubuntu forums can help more02:13
Benny1983is copying the error message returned in terminal and pasting it into googling a standard way of finding fixes for problems or is there a more elegant method? ie02:14
jgoguenSometimes it works, but in this case you're probably best to search for something along the lines of "ubuntu ps3 boot single user" or something similar to that02:14
Benny1983Okay thank you!02:15
jgoguenAnd make sure you've got another computer somewhere so you can find out how to use nano if needed :)02:15
Benny1983hmm I dont't i have an iphone to browse the web if i need to search and cant connect here i hope that will be enough. I used nano to try and make a ipod mount automatically in YDL and thats how I broke everything last time. I had a feeling something wasn't right editinig repositories every time I needed to do things!02:18
jgoguenWell just remember that once you boot into single user mode, use "vigr" to edit the group file and then use "vigr -s" to edit the group shadow file...in both, find the line that starts with "adm" and add your username to the very end of that line for both commands02:20
jgoguenIn nano, press Ctrl+X to save the file you're working on and then exit...think that's all you need to know about nano for this :)02:21
Benny1983ahh I will try and do that now thanks!02:23
jgoguenNo problem :)02:23
Benny1983what I have come up with so far is If I add my name to the sudoers file I should be set, how do i find the file to edit it?02:26
jgoguenWell, it's at /etc/sudoers but if you can edit that file you can't also install software :)02:29
jgoguenerr, can also install software02:29
Benny1983ahh back to the drawing board, so thats like locking the key to a safe, in the safe then... Maybe a fresh install? I havent done any changes to lose anything, except the half hour install time maybe I missed an option to set myself as an administrator02:33
jgoguenThe installer doesn't ask to set up an admin account, the account you create during the install process is supposed to be automatically added to the adm group.02:37
Benny1983okay so i will probably end up in the same situation then. maybe I will just try to get the most utodate version of ubuntu and see if that install is different.02:38
jgoguenI wish I knew more about PS3 installations to help you better...but the PS3 uses a different CPU type than a normal desktop, so you need to get a version of Ubuntu created for that CPU02:39
Benny1983yeah from what I have been doing so far power-pc architecture is teh flavour I need02:40
jgoguenSounds about right...02:42
jgoguenI have to go for the night...I wish you best of luck getting that fixed, if you can boot into single user mode you can edit the groups file or the sudoers file to get yourself the access you need.02:43
yax51ok I lied....oblivion, although it could be wine...isnt working :(02:44

petraaplay -l wants me to reinstall alsa-utils06:45
petrashould i do that?06:45
hobgoblinI wonder why you did not have sound in the first place with that device06:48
celthundershould i reinstall alsa and the other packages?06:49
celthunderwait...06:49
celthunderyeah06:49
celthunderwhy did you uninstall them06:49
celthunderalsa is newer06:49
celthunderdo that06:50
celthunderalso try mplayer06:51
petrait is downloading a bunch of packages06:52
hobgoblinit will06:53
petrado i stop and netbook:~$ aplay -l06:56
petraaplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...06:56
petraso now i do not have a sound card!06:56
hobgoblinpetra it might be worth trying to undo what you did following the forum thread you followed06:58
hobgoblinbut - and I would not normally suggest this but you could have probably reinstalled twice in the time you've been here06:59
hobgoblinI'm not sure what else to suggest to be honest - when you removed alsa and pulseaudio what was the reason for doing so?07:00
petrai found the link i gave you above which has a close series to what i have so i tried to follow along07:01
petrai am sorry if i waste your time i will try to undo what i did before. will you help if i reinstall and still no sound please sir?07:01
celthunderclose doesnt mean you should follow it...07:02
hobgoblinindeed07:02
celthundertry rebooting now that you reinstalled alsa and reinstall pulse too for that matter07:02
hobgoblinpetra: if you do and I am about I will be happy to help07:03
hobgoblinpetra: do that first as celthunder says07:03
petraok07:03
celthunderdon't you miss the days when a "close" would blow up your monitor on the resolution?07:04
hobgoblinha ha ha ha07:05
hobgoblinI had a lovely 24" crt jobby that failed miserably under conditions similar to that07:06
celthunderat least then people read numbers and watched them closely07:06
hobgoblin:07:07
hobgoblinpetra: is pulseaudio reinstalled yet?07:07
petrayes sir am rebooting.07:08
petrai think i need to reinstall.  It does not work yet.07:11
hobgoblinok before you do that do you have a spare usb or cd you can use?07:11
petrayes i do07:11
hobgoblinyou can back up the apt cache to save redownloading them again for the updates07:11
hobgoblinok - the folder you need to backup is at /var/cache/apt07:12
hobgoblincopy all that to the usb or cd before you reinstall07:12
petraok thank you.07:13
hobgoblinthen when you have reinstalled and it says you have updates available make sure you don't do it straight away07:13
petraok how do i update then?07:14
hobgoblinbefore you do - run gksu nautilus - that will open a filebrowser as root - then copy the backup into the same place, then you have to run an apt-get update - then you can do any upgrades07:15
hobgoblinbut come back and ask someone to make sure you do it right07:15
petraok.07:15
petrainstalling the first time took about 30 minutes will you be here then?07:16
hobgoblindon't jump straight into removing stuff to get sound working - while you might think you have done a bad thing by breaking sound - it is a good way to learn - I reinstalled about 10 times in the first 6 months lol07:16
hobgoblinI should be - but it is morning here and I have a few things to do07:16
petraok.  thank you i  will make sure not to put anything vitally important on it for 6 months so if i need to reinstall i can.07:17
hobgoblinpetra: how big is the drive?07:18
hobgoblindoes it only have ubuntu on it ?07:18
petra160GB and yes i picked remove all others when installing so no windows.07:19
hobgoblinok, do you have ethernet - if so come back here when you have booted the install - assuming it is a livecd or liveusb07:23
hobgoblinif not tell me now07:23
petraam going through install. yes i have an ethernet cable though i was using wireless.07:24
petrado i need to use ethernet?07:24
hobgoblinwhat we can do is make /home partition and a /root partition so if you need to reinstall you will keep your data07:24
petrai am at clock screen.07:25
hobgoblinoh right - you started have you?07:25
petrai just pick my time zone again right?07:25
hobgoblinhang on - stop please and close the installer down07:25
petraok07:25
hobgoblinfirst - how much RAM do you have?07:25
petra2GB07:25
petrait booted me to a preinstalled system when i exit installer07:26
hobgoblinyea that should be the livecd - is that right?07:26
hobgoblinopen the partition editor in the system >admin menu07:27
petrano cd :( it does not have a cd drive07:27
petrawhich one is partition editor? disk utility?07:28

celthunderthat says your drive is 250GB not 160...wrong drive?07:34
hobgoblinok - we are only doing work on sda1 here07:34
hobgoblinyea  - saw that too :)07:34
petrait said 160GB on the box?  I do not know sorry07:34
hobgoblinwell you got more than you thought :)07:34
petraso what to do now?07:35
hobgoblinpetra in gparted on sda1, right click on sda5 and do swapoff07:35
hobgoblinI will set out the steps now to partition the drive07:35
petraok it is doing that. done i think07:35
hobgoblinright click - sda5 - delete partition07:36
hobgoblinright click sda2 - delete then do the same for sda107:36
hobgoblinthen apply changes07:36
hobgoblinyou should end up with one large unallocated space07:36
hobgoblinonce done those - tell me07:37
petrait says unallocated unallocated done all operations07:37
hobgoblinok - now right click on the unallocated space and make new partition07:37
petraok07:38
petrait says create new partition free space preceding?07:38
hobgoblinlinux swap - make it 4Gb07:39
hobgoblinthen make another linux ext4 15Gb07:39
celthundershouldnt he make a boot partition first?07:39
celthunderbefore the swap?07:39
hobgoblinthen one more with the remaining space as ext407:39
hobgoblinI generally put swap first - I never make a boot partition either07:40
hobgoblincelthunder: ^^07:40
celthunderlol i'm just saying...boot usually has to be the first few sectors...might just be i'm oldfashioned like that07:41
hobgoblinwe can do it that way :)07:41
hobgoblinyou following petra?07:42
hobgoblinwhat have you done so far?07:42
petrai have gotten a piece of paper to do 1024x 4 and x 15 on07:42
petrasorry i am very bad at math07:43
hobgoblinlol07:43
petra4096 and 15360?07:44
hobgoblin409607:44
hobgoblinanyway - we discussed changing it so make the first partition ext4 and 15Gb or thereabouts07:45
celthunderyeah both are right07:45
petraok what do i put for label?07:45
hobgoblinthen the second linux-swap and 4Gb07:45
hobgoblinno labels07:45
hobgoblinthe third is still remaining space and ext407:45
hobgoblinyou should have ext4 then swap then ext407:46
petraall as primary right?07:46
hobgoblinyea07:47
petraok done07:47
hobgoblinapply then07:47
hobgoblinwhen it is done please run sudo fdisk -l again and pastebin it07:49
petrahttp://pastebin.com/zedrDHAS07:51
hobgoblink start the installer - go through until you reach the partition stage - choose manual and shout07:52
petraok i picked manual07:55
hobgoblinok - pick the smaller of the 2 ext4 partitions - then at the bottom - Edit07:56
hobgoblinin the new window you get - Use as ext4 and then in mountpoint box - /07:57
hobgoblinsave that - pick the larger ext4 partition - same routine - but this time pick /home in the mountpoint box07:57
hobgoblinthen carry on with the install07:58
petraok07:58
petrado i change anything else?07:58
hobgoblinno just those 2 - you will now have a seperate partition for home and your data07:59
petraok thank you.08:00
petrait is installing i will let you know when it is back up.08:02
hobgoblinok - I might be gone when it is done - need to go for an hour or so, you'll need to get the old apt cache copied across before you update08:06
celthunderi'll help with that if ou need it08:07
petraok thank you hobgoblin08:07

tdnI use my ubuntu server to output sound through attached speakers. For some reason only the left speaker produces any sound. I have verified that it is not the speakers nor the cable that has a problem (by plugging it into my laptop and other tests). How do I fix this?14:38
philcamlinis it the soundcard in the pc?14:39
philcamlinmine was flakey too14:39
philcamlinthen i got a new pc :P14:39

tdnphilcamlin, I'm not sure. I start alsa mixer and set everything to 0.14:41
tdnphilcamlin, it is a server, so I have only ssh access.14:41
philcamlinhmm yeah i dont really have any ideas the only thing that i can think of is that its not balanced correctly. ill look around and see what i can find14:42
tdnphilcamlin, I have had the problem once before in Debian, but I forgot how to fix it :(14:42

phillwhmm, i usually let synaptics get kernels - is it not avaialable in Synaptic ?15:46
slick666oh it is the command I used was.....15:46
slick666sudo apt-get install linux-image-virtual15:47
phillwlet me have a dig for you.15:47
slick666ok15:48
slick666is there a way to back out of this install and start again15:48
slick666i.e. redownload and everything?15:48
phillwyou're installing a virtual box ?15:48
slick666I have KVM installed15:49
slick666that kernel is not a requirement but it seems like it adds advanced features that I want15:49
slick666thats why I'm installing it manually15:50
phillwokies, I'm still having a dig15:51
slick666apt does let me remove it15:52
phillwbodhi is knowlegeable on KVM, but he's not logged on, I can only point you over to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM#Documentation  I don't have knowldege of the system. :-(15:56
slick666lol15:56
slick666I've edited that15:56
slick666https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Managing?action=info15:57
slick666:)15:57
slick666I've done some playing with apt and I sem to have been able to fix the system somewhat15:57
slick666here's what I did..15:57
phillwI have enough with win plus 3 'buntus on partitions without virtual boxes ;-)15:57
slick666well I got a big big machine15:58
slick666and I'm trying to reduce the number of always n boxes15:58
slick666on*15:58
slick666the issue I was having with apt was that package wasn't installing15:58
slick666so it left apt in a funny state15:59
slick666if you try the apt-get -f install it trys the same thing to fix it and fails15:59
slick666if you give the proper apt-get remove15:59
slick666apt is fine again but the same package is in your cache directory15:59
phillwlol, I got limited brain-cells !!  Win + 9.10 + 10.04a3 (main) + 10.04a3(lubuntu) is quite enough !!  I think a couple of the people over on the 10.04 testing forum run Virtual systems.15:59
slick666if you run the apt-get clean (not apt-get autoclean) it removes the package and you can redownload and install it fresh16:00
slick666this too failed for me so I guess I'm out of luck atm16:00
slick666lol, I feel you there16:01
phillwyeah, if autoclean doesn't work, clean will remove everything.16:01
slick666it was the clean command that I was searching for but couldn't remember16:01
slick666I've tried the package three times and no luck so I'm going to write the package maintainer with my info16:02
phillwslick666: If you post on the server area on the mains forums, one of the people there will have knowledge.16:02
slick666phillw did you say you ran virtulbox?16:02
slick666good idea16:02
phillwhttp://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=339  is the server area, KVM is designed for CLI use as opposed to virtualbox which is more GUI16:03
slick666phillw if ou like virtualbox I would check out virt-manager16:04
phillwslick666: I don't run any virtualisation. Just have a few partitions on my hard drive16:04
slick666ah I got ya16:04
phillwonly 1GB RAM on my laptop (I travel a lot, so a laptop it has to be)16:04
slick666I got a server with 16 memory slots16:06
phillwslick666: bodhi.zazen I have seen answering queries on KVM - if you post there he should get it, else keep your eye out for him coming on here16:06
slick666and up to two quad cores in it16:06
slick666but you wouldn't want to travel with it :)16:06
phillwslick666: not without an articulated waggon, any ways ;-)16:07
slick666bodhi.zazen?16:07
slick666I'm not getting the reference16:07
phillwyup. bobhi.zazen is one of the moderators on the main forum, he is also heavily involved in #ubuntu-beginners16:08
phillwThere is a sticky of his on the Server forum, that may be of help to you.16:08
slick666oh cool16:08
slick666thanks16:08
slick666philw, #ubuntu-server room had the answer16:33
slick666the issue is the linux-image-server and linux-image-virtual can't be installed at the same time16:34
phillwslick666: glad they could help, if only to say you can't do both at once.16:44
slick666yea, the two packages share a few common things and the package maintainers need to do some work to make sure the two don't colide16:45
slick666but there is a work around16:45
slick666but that didn't solve my ultimate problem16:46
slick666so I'm hitting up the #kvm guys16:46
slick666and the #virt guys on OFTC16:46

Dillpedro3005, they were never there before and none of my other computers have these optioins19:29
pedro3005when you upgrade your kernel, by installing a new version (ubuntu packs these in the regular updates), it doesn't actually uninstall the old kernel19:29

pedro3005Dill, :)19:42
phillwwhen you have used synaptic to remove the old kernels, do not forget to run sudo update-grub  so that grub can rebuild the list of kernels.19:44
Dillphillw, thank you19:45
Dillphillw, pedro3005, duanedesign, IT WORKED!!!!!!19:49
Dillthank you all19:49
pedro3005Dill, no problem19:49
ghostofmybrainhello21:19
pedro3005hello ghostofmybrain21:20
ghostofmybraini'm trying to install gedit onto my ubuntu server edition but I'm not very familiar with the command line21:20
ghostofmybrainsorry not gedit21:20
ghostofmybrainwait yeah, nevermind. lol21:20
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, so you WANT to install gedit?21:21
ghostofmybrainwell, I need to install something that I can use to edit a cfg file anyway21:21
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, you probably don't want gedit as it requires gnome21:21
pedro3005and why would gnome be on a server is beyond me21:21
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, try using vim or nano if you want something simpler21:21
ghostofmybrainpedro3005 ok, I'll try vim. how do I install it from teh command line?21:22
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, it's included in ubuntu21:23
ghostofmybrainok21:23
ghostofmybrainok, cool, taht worked, thanks21:25
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, it's quite a complex editor though. might wanna read a tutorial on it21:26
* hobgoblin starts flamewar and prefers nano for doing simple stuff :)21:29
ghostofmybrainnow I'm stuck in my editor lol. how do I get back to my command line21:29
phillwlol @ hobgoblin  yeah, nano is a bit easier for most.21:29
hobgoblinwhich is why I prefer nano21:29
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, ESC then :wg <ENTER> to save and quit21:30
pedro3005:wq *21:30
hobgoblinphillw: I got stuck editing sudoers - couldn;t get out - even when people told me the command ^^ so I just shut and hoped for the best21:30
phillwlol, i cheat ... gksudo gedit :-D21:31
pedro3005phillw, he's on a server21:32
phillwpedro3005: i know :-)   but, as hobgoblin agreed, nano is a lot easier to navigate round than vi21:33
ghostofmybraini'll try nano with the next file I have to edit and report back.21:33
phillwghostofmybrain: with nano, you get the commands listed at the bottom, so you don't have to remember them :-)21:33
hobgoblinghostofmybrain: ctrl+O saves ctrl+x exits - though you can ctrl+x and Y to save21:33
hobgoblinthat too :)21:34
ghostofmybrainI'd say nano is better for my noob linux skillz alright21:35
phillwit's a popular CLI editor21:36
ghostofmybrainalthough I probably wouldn't have known ^ X meant ctrl X if you hand' mentioned it21:36
phillwI must have a go at putting a full server under lxde ...  nice small gui package :-D21:37
ghostofmybraindo you use nano to edit .ini files?21:40
tenachghostofmybrain, I do.  I use nano for pretty much all text editing.21:42
ghostofmybrainwhat is screen?21:44
Phreais the thingy that glows in the dark, you can read this text off of it21:46
ghostofmybrainlol. actually I don't think I need screen. I think that was just an optional way of doing it.21:46
Phreascreening is when you log into an irc client [irssi for instance] that's continualy connected to an irc channel21:47
Phreayou can screen on IRC via Irssi, using Putty for instance21:47
ghostofmybrainI think ti was referring to this http://www.rackaid.com/resources/linux-screen-tutorial-and-how-to/21:49
Phreaoh ah21:51
Phreawell, what do I know, right? ;)21:51
ghostofmybrainlol21:52
ghostofmybrainso... how do I shut down this computer running ubuntu server edition?22:04
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, use the shutdown command22:08
pedro3005sudo shutdown -h now22:08
ghostofmybrainok thanks22:08
drubinghostofmybrain: DO you have physical access to the machine22:16
drubincan you turn it back on?22:16
drubinwonders if it was too late22:16
phillwdrubin: he was editing code on it earlier, I'm guessing as he needed help as to how to do that, he was not using a remote login .... but, we'll find out :-)22:17
ghostofmybrain_Yes, I have physical accesss22:19
drubinshutting down remote servers is just plain painfull22:19
ghostofmybrain_i'm trying to make a counter stike server on some old computer parts I had lying around22:19
drubinghostofmybrain_: :) just making sure because if you don't there is no way to bring it back online22:19
marine1bodhi_zazen: Alright i'm here22:25
bodhi_zazen'lo22:31
bodhi_zazenthat is what I was syaing22:31
marine1bodhi_zazen: d/l a tar.gz file to the desktop extracted it but the setup.py file won't let me go further than that22:31
bodhi_zazenit is a common mistake to assume that your back up is fully functional22:31
bodhi_zazenbut then when you need it, it is not working22:31
bodhi_zazenlol22:31
bodhi_zazendid you run setup.py as root ?22:32
marine1yes tried that but the file is not recognized in the terminal after I cd/ desktop22:33
marine1bodhi_zazen: i tried moving the extracted file thru sudo nautilus in the usr/lib file and that didn't yield me any success22:34
marine1bodhi_zazen: python: can't open file 'setup.py22:35
bodhi_zazenhmm ...22:35
marine1bodhi_zazen: Extract the archive and install it. You'll only need root              permissions for the last command: $ tar xzf Webilder-0.6.5.tar.gz $ cd Webilder-0.6.5 $ su Password: # python setup.py install --install-data=/usr22:38
bodhi_zazenI would move the archive back to where you found it , /backup22:39
marine1bodhi_zazen: i installed all of the dependencies already22:39
bodhi_zazenthen become root with22:39
bodhi_zazensudo -i22:39
bodhi_zazenand re run the script22:39
marine1it's not the /file from previously /backup this is a new program22:40
marine1bodhi_zazen: webilder22:40
bodhi_zazenLOL22:41
marine1bodhi_zazen: root@robert-desktop:~# tar xzf Webilder-0.6.5.tar.gz22:42
marine1tar: Webilder-0.6.5.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory22:42
marine1tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now22:42
marine1tar: Child returned status 222:42
marine1tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors22:42
marine1bodhi_zazen: Extract the archive and install it. You'll only need root              permissions for the last command this is the part that i need help in22:43
marine1bodhi_zazen: i followed everything up to this point and then the party starts22:43
marine1bodhi_zazen: scroll down to the manual instructions section :http://www.webilder.org/download.html22:46
bodhi_zazenIn that tutorial, when they say to su ...22:47
bodhi_zazenyou need to sudo -i22:47
bodhi_zazenThe script is executable, so ...22:48
bodhi_zazenchmod a+x script22:48
marine1bodhi_zazen: that is the command :chmod a+x script22:48
bodhi_zazenyep22:49
bodhi_zazenagain, look at wonership and permissions of the contents of the archive22:49
marine1bodhi_zazen: i have permission for the entire file22:50
marine1bodhi_zazen: Extract the archive and install it how do I install the extracted archive because the new folder is not a tar.gz file22:51
marine1bodhi_zazen: this is where i am stuck.22:51
bodhi_zazencd into the new directory22:52
marine1bodhi_zazen: because the last steps are to : You'll only need root              permissions for the last command:22:52
bodhi_zazenin the command line ...22:52
bodhi_zazensudo -i22:52
bodhi_zazenyou should now be root , no ?22:52
bodhi_zazencd into the archive22:52
marine1bodhi_zazen: yes22:52
bodhi_zazenthe extracted directory22:52
bodhi_zazenand run that command ...22:53
bodhi_zazensetup.py --install=/usr or whatever ;P22:53
marine1bodhi_zazen: bash: cd: Webilder-0.6.5: No such file or directory22:53
marine1 and this is the extracted folder on the desktop22:53
bodhi_zazencd /home/your_user/Desktop/Webilder-0.6.522:54
marine1bodhi_zazen: o.k. did  it22:55
marine1bodhi_zazen: use the setup.py command22:55
bodhi_zazenw00t22:55
bodhi_zazen./setup.py ....22:55
marine1bodhi_zazen: this is the command from the page :python setup.py install --install-data=/usr22:56
marine1bodhi_zazen: i think that is wrong because it's on the desktop not usr22:57
bodhi_zazen /usr is where to install to, so that is fine22:57
bodhi_zazenso ..22:57
bodhi_zazenpython ./setup.py install --install-data=/usr22:57
marine1bodhi_zazen: Here is the bottom of the message should i install it now thru the main menu22:58
marine1bodhi_zazen: creating /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/webilder22:58
marine1error: could not create '/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/webilder': Permission denied22:58
bodhi_zazenyou ran the script as root ?22:59
bodhi_zazenyou can always22:59
bodhi_zazenmkdir -p /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/webilder22:59
bodhi_zazenand run the script again22:59
bodhi_zazenI am getting the impression the people who write the script are not familiar with ubuntu23:00
marine1bodhi_zazen: what's first the original script or make another directory23:00
bodhi_zazenwell, you already ran the script, now try making the diirectory and run the script again23:01
bodhi_zazensee if we make any progress23:02
marine1bodhi_zazen: O.K.23:02
marine1bodhi_zazen: should i cd out of there or stay in desktop/webilder23:02
bodhi_zazenstay in webbuilder23:03
marine1bodhi_zazen: robert@robert-desktop:~/Desktop/Webilder-0.6.5$ mkdir -p /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/webilder23:04
marine1mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/webilder': Permission denied23:04
bodhi_zazenas root ?23:04
