robot682I have an odd problem that I have not been able to find an answer for.  My school no longer has an on-site exchange server and instead uses OWA hosted by microsoft.  This can be accessed via Outlook Connector in Office 2007 which allows me to mange my email as well as my calendar.  Is there a way to do this from Ubuntu?00:37
benny1hi is +jenugogue about ?00:40
pedro3005benny1, you mean jgoguen ?00:42
benny1is there a command to update all codecs to the latest versions?00:42
pedro3005benny1, that depends, how did you install said codecs/00:42
pedro3005?00:42
benny1Yes pedro! my mistake00:42
pedro3005benny1, tip: use the tab complete featur00:42
benny1I have a fresh ubuntu install and i have downloaded vlc. thats all00:42
benny1Tab complete?00:43
pedro3005benny1, "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras"00:43
pedro3005benny1, try typing pedr then press TAB00:43
ghostofmybrain_what command would I use to copy a file from one directory to another00:43
benny1oh a bit like how the iphone finishes things?00:43
pleia2robot682: I don't think so, but you might want to check out Evolution's documentation to see if it has a plugin these days00:43
pedro3005ghostofmybrain, "cp file /path/to/new/file"00:43
ghostofmybrain_thanks00:43
pleia2robot682: I know it has an exchange plugin, but OWA is different :\00:44
pedro3005benny1, well, actually the iphone must've copied the TAB complete but yeah :P00:44
pedro3005benny1, and the point is if you type mine or jgoguen's nick exactly as it is, we get a warning00:44
pedro3005easier to spot if someone's looking for you00:44
robot682pleia2: That's what I was thinking as well.  I haven't seen anything I was just hoping I had missed it.  Thanks.00:45
* jgoguen looks up00:45
pedro3005see?00:45
benny1okay, Can U let Jgoguen know I appreciated his help to let me get access to my system again. i had no accounts with admin rights00:45
jgoguenlol00:45
pedro3005benny1, you can tell him yourself... he's here00:45
benny1ahh the man himself, *I assume* a man anyway00:45
jgoguenThat's a dangerous thing to assume around here ;)00:46
jgoguenBut yes, I'm male00:46
benny1well I got root access but I think it was to do with encrypting my HDD linux partition. i just reinstalled and Im up and running.00:46
jgoguenAwesome00:47
benny1I'm about to go to bed now cause gotta work tomorrow but can you copy everything off an ipod to another drive, but preserving the names of the files? or maybe I mean not preserving the way itunes has changed it to something else entirely.  if I could get maybe everything organised by artist would be awesome?00:49
benny1anyways thanks for the help, I imagine I might be here quite often now... lol00:50
jgoguenbenny1: If you have 9.10 installed, you could use gtkpod00:50
benny1I have 9.04 Rhythmbox has picked it up autoatically so far. I can use sybaptic to change to 9.10, right?00:51
benny1*synaptic even00:52
pedro3005benny1, you wish to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10?00:52
jgoguenIf Rhythmbox picked it up you may be able to just use Rhythmbox to copy the files off00:52
benny1I read some where that 9.04 is at the moment the best support for PS3. so I'm not in a rush, but that might also be the same place that told me to endlessly edit repo's in YDL 6.2 until i broke everything!00:53
benny1Does rhythmbox allow this?00:54
pedro3005benny1, I think so00:56
benny1pedro3005: i am currently running the update manager, to make everything the latest version for 9.04 I think.... there was also "upgrade" which I'm going to research a little before I attempt. I'd like to find out if others have it running before I attempt it just incase there are any conflicts wiht PS300:57
pedro3005benny1, upgrade will get you 9.10 I think00:58
pedro3005benny1, so just update the programs00:58
benny1pedro3005: jgoguen: thanks, time for bed now I'm gonna leave this running to update... Bye!00:59
jgoguenBye :)00:59

Phreasorry for my ignorance, but what's the difference between Debian Unstable and Testing?03:39
Phreawhat's the path?03:41
Phreaunstable -- testing -- stable ?03:41
pedro3005As unstable never becomes testing, this codename is permanent, contrary to the codenames of stable and testing, which have volatile codenames (for instance, stable is currently[update] known as lenny, but was etch before Debian 5.0 was released).03:42
pedro3005Phrea, found that in wikipedia03:42
PhreaI know about wiki etc03:42
PhreaI just want a direct answer03:42
pedro3005Phrea, yeah the thing is I don't know03:42
nigelbPhrea: when a package is updated, it goes into sid (unstable)03:43
Phreathat doesnt say a lot03:43
Phreabut I gather Lenny is stable?03:43
nigelbpleia2: ^03:43
Phrea...or am I wrong again?03:43
pleia2yes, lenny is stable03:44
Phreaok03:44
Phreaand sid is the successor?03:45
nigelbpleia2: Phrea was looking for difference between unstable and testing03:45
pleia2after a package has been uploaded to sid, if there are no major problems with it (bugs, brokenness) it gets migrated to testing after 10 days03:45
pleia2and packages in testing are bound by rules of debian security policy (just like stable), those in unstable are not03:45
Phreaso it's stable - testing - unstable03:46
PhreaOk?03:46
pleia2basically03:46
PhreaI'm learning03:46
Phrea:)03:46
PhreaI'm tempted to give Debian a try, but I dont like the unclearness of it all...03:47
pleia2debian stable is a lot like ubuntu LTS releases03:47
pleia2in fact, hardy and lenny are pretty similar package version wise03:47
Phreayes, that's what I'm to believe :)03:47
Phreabut the thing is, there seems to be a lot of unstableness in Debianland03:48
pleia2unstableness?03:48
Phreagheh, yes, no clear path03:49
Phreaa lot of bickering03:49
Phreaetc03:49
nigelbunstable and debian? do they even go together03:49
pleia2oh, that's just on debian-devel03:49
pleia2individual teams do fine03:49
Phreaso the releases are also fine?03:49
pleia2as a project it's pretty solid03:49
PhreaI keep hearing about all that bickering and stuff...03:50
Phrea:\03:50
pleia2yeah, it happens03:50
pleia2it's a big project and people get passionate about it03:50
PhreaI've tried Deb before, a lifetime ago03:50
Phreaok03:50
Phreaas long as they have their eyes focussed...03:50
PhreaI can understand the passion :)03:51
pleia2especially as release time comes near you see a lot of discussion and arguments, but things calm down03:51
Phreaok :)03:51
pleia2and most of the people doing the Real Work aren't deeply involved in the bickering03:51
PhreaI SO want to give Debian a try...03:52
Phrea...but it kinda scares me03:52
pleia2on a desktop?03:52
Phreadue to that bickering etc03:52
pleia2the OS is solid, we use it on production servers for major institutions03:52
Phreapleia2: for instance yes :)03:52
Phreawhy not03:52
Phreaok03:52
Phreawhat kind of institutions?03:53
Phreaif I may ask03:53
pleia2but ubuntu has a *much* more polished desktop and desktop user experience03:53
Phreapleia2: that's why I'm here03:53
pleia2a couple museums, a shipyard, some smaller businesses03:53
Phreaand why I use ubu03:53
Phreaaha, cool :)03:53
pleia2I just use debian on servers, ubuntu is on my desktop and laptops03:54
Phreayou manage those sites?03:54
Phreaah03:54
Phrea:)03:54
pleia2yep, I'm a debian sysadmin03:54
Phreagood to hear03:54
Phreacool :)03:54
nigelband a debian maintainer ;)03:54
Phreasorry that I seem a bit paranoid03:54
pleia2paranoia is reasonable, some distros have died over bickering03:54
Phreaindeed03:54
Phreathat's why I'm kinda worried03:55
pleia2but debian won't be one of them, it's been like this for their entire life (15 years now?)03:55
Phreasince Ubu is based on Deb03:55
pleia2yeah, that too03:55
Phreatrue, Deb is old03:55
pleia2huh, debian will be 17 this year03:55
Phreawhoei :D03:55
PhreaI started out with Slack03:55
Phrea[dont get me started, I couldnt even log in :D ]03:56
pleia2lol03:56
* pleia2 redhat > debian > gentoo > debian > ubuntu&debian03:56
PhreaI tried redhat too03:56
Phrea:)03:56
pleia2temporary insanity in the middle there :)03:56
PhreaI did a bit of distro hopping back in the day03:56
PhreaI never stuck with one tho03:57
Phreaalways went back to windows03:57
Phreaback then, linux wasnt usable as a desktop03:57
Phreabrb03:58
Phreaback04:00
pleia2well I hope your experience is different this time :)04:01
Phreahey, it was cool back then04:02
Phreajust not easy :D04:02
pleia2yeah, it still astounds me how easy things are now04:03
PhreaI managed to get it all working, but it wasnt like a normal desktop04:03
Phreapleia2: indeed :o04:03
PhreaI still cant believe it04:03
pleia2I was so pleased when I plugged in a usb printer the other day and I got a dialog saying "HP blah-blah 3243 was plugged in, would you like to print a test page?"04:03
Phreait all just works :o04:03
pleia2wow! and it worked!04:03
Phreaindeed :D04:03
Phreagheh04:03
nigelbhp always works on linux thankfully04:03
pleia2yeah04:03
Phreawhat about the QNX demo disks... :004:04
Phreaeven more amazing :o04:04
Phrea1 OS on 1 disk04:04
Phreaand it worked04:05
Phreathere are other microkernel 'distro's now, like kolibrie etc04:05
Phreaall micro kernel based04:06
PhreaI only know to ask: 'HOW?!'04:08

Brodz987i have just installed the banshee media player. the first time i used the program it worked fine. now when i try to start it up, it crashed before it opens. i have tried unitstalling and re-installing with no better results11:47
Brodz987what can i do in the terminal to check what errors it has?11:47
hobgoblinrun it from the terminal with banshee11:48
Brodz987sorry. um. what process would i run?11:49
hobgoblinbanshee11:50
hobgoblinjust that :)11:50
Brodz987i have done that but the terminal is just idle now11:53
Brodz987doing nothing11:53
hobgoblintry sudo killall banshee &&banshee11:56
Brodz987no process found11:57
Brodz987its weird. it was working now its not.11:57
Brodz987im awesome at windows, how to i do a complete uninstall for it, and start again? because i know that some traces are normally left behind with an uninstall11:58
hobgoblinof banshee?11:58
hobgoblinor windows - I use format for that lol :)11:58
hobgoblinBrodz987: if it is banshee, then it's fairly simple - in fact I have just done the same thing 30 minutes ago11:59
Brodz987banshee11:59
Brodz987windows is gone11:59
Brodz987forever..... thank god11:59
hobgoblinopen nautius - assuming you are using ubuntu - then ctrl+h to see the hidden file12:00
Brodz987hobgoblin: yes please help. ive got no clue whats wrong12:00
hobgoblinyou will find banshee in .cache .config and in .gconf/apps - delete only the banshee folders12:00
Brodz987sorry im very new. yes ubuntu. where is nautius?12:01
hobgoblinplaces - home folder12:01
hobgoblinthen ctrl+h12:01
Brodz987oh.12:01
hobgoblinonce you've deleted the banshee folders do sudo apt-get purge banshee &&sudo apt-get install banshee12:02
hobgoblindeleting the folders from your /home removes all the config files the apt-get command will remove and reinstall banshee, then when you start it you will be default12:03
hobgoblinone more thing, there is no need for apologies - we help beginners - they tend to be new and not know and have mostly just left their comfort zone :)12:04
Brodz987:-$..... i have done that and purged the install. re-installed the app and have the same issue12:05
Brodz987is there comething i can do in the terminal that will give me error codes so i can look them up12:05
Brodz987?12:05
hobgoblinyou need to run it from a terminal to see what it does in there - I assume this is just a standard banshee - you've not added in repositories for the unstable one?12:06
hobgoblintry the killall command again but do it seperately sudo killall banshee then banshee12:07
Brodz987i have added something off the website for software scources: http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu12:07
hobgoblinok was there a particular reaason for doing so - or is it just what you are used to doing from windows?12:08
Brodz987windows...12:08
Brodz987so i will remove that12:09
Brodz987 and start again12:09
Brodz987???12:09
hobgoblinI would - you can do so from Software sources in the system > admin menu12:09
hobgoblinmost of the time you should be able to get what you need from the standard repositories without adding in 3rd party stuff - one exception being medibuntu to get restricted stuff12:10
Brodz987is there any advantage of using terminal to install over the graphical interface?12:10
Brodz987eg. ubuntu software centre12:11
hobgoblinnot really - generally the reason I do it that way when helping is that sudo apt-get install works regardless - but if I was getting you to go to synaptic or software centre they don't necessarily exist in kubuntu for instance - and it is easier to type :)12:12
Brodz987i have removed the third party repo, i have removed the files, purged it, and re-installed it. but not working. ;(12:14
Brodz987however it was strange that i did not get an option to hit 'y'12:15
hobgoblingnome-system-monitor12:15
Brodz987to confirm the install., the script just finished12:15
hobgoblincheck that banshee is not still running12:15
Brodz987it says its sleeping - banshee12:16
hobgoblinsometimes it does that - I have never really understood why it does it12:16
hobgoblinBrodz987: right click and kill it please12:16
Brodz987gone12:16
hobgoblink - now try again from a terminal12:16
Brodz987go over steps from top12:17
hobgoblinnope - just try running it now12:17
hobgoblinwe've got rid of the configs and reinstalled it12:17
Brodz987BINGO!12:18
hobgoblincool - so is it running now properly?12:18
Brodz987so the lesson for me here is that i need to check if the process is running in the background, before i check everything else.12:18
hobgoblinno error messages?12:18
hobgoblinyep - though I think killall should have dealt with that12:19
hobgoblinok - now close banshee down - and try and restart it normally12:19
Brodz987seems to be ok12:20
hobgoblinok12:20
Brodz987can you help me with something else12:20
hobgoblinif I can I will :)12:20
Brodz987im using bittorrent and running it through wine, to do my downloading. the only probelm is that i need to manually add the torrents as i cant select it from the download manager 'open with option' in firefox12:21
Brodz987as i understand there should be an easier way to do this. the only issue with the pre-loaded one is a have a scheduler running for my peak and off peak times12:22
Brodz987and this doesn't support a scheduler12:22
hobgoblin2 secs12:23
hobgoblindeluge is in the repos and has a scheduler12:24
hobgoblinjust checking that out - I used to use it but was not sure ;)12:25
Brodz987does that support multiple trackers for faster downloads? or can i olny load one?.... i will give it a try12:25
hobgoblinyou could of course just use bittorrent as it too is in the repos - better than trying to use the win one in wine I woudl think12:26
hobgoblinI am pretty sure it does - but it is a while since I used it12:26
hobgoblinhi nigelb yos12:29
nigelbheya hobgoblin, how are you?12:29
hobgoblinpretty good ty12:29
YosHi hobgoblin and nigelb12:30
nigelbhobgoblin: I got ubuntu membership :)12:30
hobgoblincool - congrats12:30
YosCongrats12:30
nigelbhobgoblin: it was very humbling.  2 of the board members cheered for me :)12:31
* hobgoblin knows the feeling - a very short meeting it was for me 12:31
nigelbthe guy in front of me came to his second meeting and got rejected. I got scared12:32
nigelbbut they were all appreciative and unanimously +1'ed.  Unsually there were plenty of board members that day12:33

SonmHello people. Does anybody have any experience with installing OpenLaszlo? I have a problem with The JAVA_HOME environment variable... namely it is not defined, yet I have Java installed...19:14
nhandlerdrubin: Were you the person who liked java ?19:19
phillwSonm: is OpenLaszlo a programming suite for Java, or an application ?19:20
SonmIt an application I believe19:21
Sonmit's*19:21
phillwI'm not really well up on Java, but I know enough to install programming stuff like for android phones -- I'll go have a look at the app, in the meantime, someone may know of it here.19:22
SonmI was looking for some stuff, which is meant for building RIA things... well some alternative to Macromedia Flash and found OpenLaszlo19:23
SonmI c...19:23
SonmWell, my problem is that OL needs JAVA JDK thingie and it seems that JAVA_HOME is pointing to JRE19:24
phillwSonm:   I hope that helps. The key to the JAVA_HOME problem for me was the "sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun" line.19:24
phillwSonm: seems you are not alone :-)19:25
Sonmi did that... did't work... What I have is:  "which java" -> /usr/bin/java and then if I go with "ls -l /usr/bin/java" it gives me /etc/alternatives/java -> finally ending up with /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java... that's where the bug dwells I reckon19:27
benny1Hello, can someone please offer a little advice on setting video resolution on ps3? in Display it is telling me my display is running at  1688x944 @ 30hz. I am using a HD tv and want to change these values to 1920x1080 @ 60hz to match the HD tv19:28
benny1BTW- Display panel offers no option to change these via GUI19:29
phillwokies Sonm, let me do a bit more digging for you.19:29
phillwSonm: can you give me the result of19:30
phillw        $ echo $JAVA_HOME19:30
phillwthe 1st $ is your prompt, don't type it19:31
phillwecho $JAVA_HOME19:31
SonmThanks sure... Actually it gives no result, but I was doing lots of things going here and there with export JAVA_HOME and export PATH...19:31
phillwokies, no result is good :-)19:32
SonmLOL19:32
benny1Anyone able to advise on changing display mode?19:32
Sonmwell, practically speaking yes:))19:32
phillwSonm: what does  ls /usr/java  give ?19:34
benny1phillw: Sorry to interrupt how do i get to the ps ubuntu chat page? is it #psubuntu? I don#t know how to look!?19:34
phillwbenny1: never heard of ps ubuntu ?19:35
phillwthere are no spaces on channel pages19:35
benny1phillw: ubuntu on PS3 chat like the one wer're in now? someone told me a night or two ago and I forgot the link and i reinstalled19:36
Sonmphillw: you mean ls -l /usr/bin/java?19:37
Sonmls /usr/java doesn't exist...19:38
phillwbenny1: try googling +IRC playstation +ubuntu19:38
phillwSonm: looks like jdk is no installed, then. How did you install it ?19:38
Sonmrofl... I started answering you in the terminal... Well, jdk is installed... did it in a standard way together wuth jre sudo apt-get install blah blah19:39
benny1phillw: Thanks!19:40
benny1Oops i think I sent that "Phrea" I'm such a newb dunno what that means19:40
drubinnhandler: yes kinda19:40
drubinSonm: You still need java help19:41
Sonmpdrubin: what kind of java help?19:42
phillwthanks drubin  - I'm in lubuntu 10.04a3 atm, so would have to re-boot to find the packages :-)19:42
drubinSonm: You meantioned something about JAVA_HOME19:43
drubinis that sorted or do you need help19:43
Sonmdrubin: I think my OpenLaszlo isn't able to locate JDK... cause when I start it it sayd that the JAVA_HOME var is not defined...19:44
phillwdrubin: he's stuck at this one http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8907083  where it does not show, and the ls returns nothing19:44
drubinSonm: That is fine you can get around that by adding  export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/ to your ~/.bashrc file at the end19:44
SonmI've tried the fololowing: ls -l /usr/bin/java... after some iteartions it brought me to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java19:46
SonmI did export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun and then export PATH19:47
drubinthat should work19:48
Sonmbut then I've found a broken JDK link in the JAVA folder  and my tomcat gave my that I should point to JDK not JRE stuff19:48
drubintry java-6-sun/bin/19:48
SonmNo such file or dir...19:49
SonmSorry, wrong chat... I mean I did but with no any success...19:50
SonmMaybe I have to reinstall JAVA?19:51
drubinSonm: what does aptitude show sun-java6-jdk19:52
drubin give you19:52
SonmPackage: sun-java6-jdk19:53

drubinSonm: that is odd19:54
Sonmdrubin: more than19:54
Sonmthat19:55
drubinbecause if sun-java6-jdk is installed then you should have /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/19:55
drubinSonm: do a ls -lha /usr/lib/jvm/19:55
drubinbut pastebin that19:55
SonmYes I do have that folder19:55
drubinSonm: I want to see what is inside there :)19:55

SonmCOPYRIGHT  include  jre  LICENSE  README.html19:56
SonmJDK is the broken link tho...19:57
drubinno /usr/lib/jvm/19:57
drubinbut ye maybe reinstalling is just easier19:57
Sonmerr... but I guess that the problem is with jdk broken link... isn't it?19:58
Sonmthere is a file called jdk and UBUNTU marks it as a broken link19:59
drubinSonm: where does it link too20:00
drubinSonm: are you doing this from the GUI or command line20:00
Sonmdrubin: terminal only and it links to non exiting /usr/java/jdk20:01
SonmGUI is the EVIL!:)20:02
drubinhehe20:06
drubinSonm: Please pastebin ls -lha /usr/lib/jvm/*20:07
Sonmdrubin: goodness... it gave quite some text!20:09
drubinSonm: that is why I said pastebin20:09
Sonmhow do I do that?20:09
ghostofmybrain_pastebin.com20:09
Sonmthanks... brb20:10
drubinSonm: I think    ls -lha /usr/lib/jvm/* | pastebinit might work20:10
Sonmdrubin: http://pastebin.com/ux4UWJrJ20:12
drubinSonm: something there is very funky20:14
drubinSonm: I would remove all java stuff and then reinstall it20:14
SonmROFL20:14
SonmWeeeeell :)))20:15
SonmOkay!20:15
ghostofmybrain_how do I download something through the command line?20:17
ghostofmybrain_I'm at this website (on my windows machine) and there is a link to download this rar file20:17
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: You can use wget (man wget) for that20:17
ghostofmybrain_how do I convert the information of that into what I need to enter into the command line?20:18
ghostofmybrain_I know how to do it on a site where it provides the link for the linux download, I jus tdon't know how when it isn't provided20:18
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: You should be able to do 'wget URL' to download the file (that is the most basic form)20:18
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: What is the site?20:18
Sonmdrubin: done... now java -version gives me java version "1.6.0_0"20:18
Sonmdrubin: should I remove that either?20:19
ghostofmybrain_http://www.forum.wiaderko.com/en/przydatne-pluginy-amx-i-amxx/118265-voices-plugin-management-to-manage-the-voice-on-the-server-dead-can-talk-se-zoba.html20:19
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: Darn. It wants an account to allow you to download the files. If you are restricted to a terminal, you might want to try lynx (a CLI web browser)20:20
ghostofmybrain_If it didn't require a login, what would I do?20:22
drubinor download onto your windows machine and scp it across20:22
drubinghostofmybrain_: copy the link and do   wget <link_here>20:22
ghostofmybrain_I tried that yesterday with something and it didn't work. Let me find an example and perhaps you could show me the exact thing to do20:23
ghostofmybrain_http://www.cstrike-planet.com/maps/2558-de_dust_night20:24
Sonmdrubin: jave is completely removed... shall I install it again using synaptic or just sudo apt-get?20:24
Sonmjava*20:24
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: What on that page did you want to download ?20:24
ghostofmybrain_de_dust_night.zip20:24
* nhandler waits while his download request is being prepared.20:25
ghostofmybrain_i forget what you press to auto-complete a person's name at the beginning of the message...20:25
drubinSonm: makes no difference, but make sure you only install sun-java6-jdk :)20:25
nhandlerghostofmybrain_: wget http://www.cstrike-planet.com/dl/0179a8f26f0f242f5848f978c9983b1e/4b9d4621/maps/cstrike/de/de_dust_night.zip20:25
drubinghostofmybrain_: tab20:26
Sonmdrubin: Am on my way, thank you!20:26
ghostofmybrain_+nhandler: how did you get that URL?20:26
drubinSonm: hope it helps20:26
nhandlerI looked at the source of the page you linked to.20:27
ghostofmybrain_Ohhhh20:27
nhandlerI did a search of the source for .zip to find the URL20:27
ghostofmybrain_Ok, cool, that helps a bunch, thanks20:28
Sonmdrubin: it's done...20:29
drubinnhandler: grep ftw20:29
phillwdrubin: are you 'into' android programming with sdk ?20:29
drubinunless you did things via firefox's gui thingy20:29
nhandlerdrubin: Nah, I just did Ctrl+F in chromium20:29
drubinphillw: yes20:29
drubinnhandler: blah.. ;/20:30
drubin:)20:30
phillwkewl, could you have a quick look at http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1235767  and either bring it upto date, or tell me where I should send people. It's been a while since I did anything like that & would appreciate an upto date 'How-To' .. thanks.20:31
phillwdrubin: , oh, you don't need the newyork bit - it's just the one it comes up with via google !!!20:32
Sonm*sighs*20:34
Sonmdrubin: Sir, which java gives me  /usr/bin/java... again20:35
Sonmdrubin: and echo $JAVA_HOME gives nothing20:35
drubinSonm: do a ls -lha /usr/lib/jvm/*20:36
drubinand try adding export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/sun... thingy again20:36
Sonmdrubin: http://pastebin.com/5Rh5LvzD thanks for your time20:38
drubinSonm: does that export java_home thing work20:42
drubinelse I have no idea. you can try   using just the sun-java/  or the /bin/ or the /jdk20:42
SonmI did export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun and then did export PATH adding bin... still can't run my stuff... *sighs*20:43
Sonmdrubin: how do I locate my jdk folder?20:43
drubinit should be the /usr/lib/jvm/ thingy or at least a sub folder in there20:44
Sonmdrubin: thank you20:49
ghostofmybrain_I can't figure out how to get the attached file off this page http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=6900621:06
ghostofmybrain_it's where you click "Get Plugin", and the file is Voices-Management.amxx21:06
ghostofmybrain_i couldn't find it in the source code like I was doing with other downloads21:07
ghostofmybrain_how would I use scp to get a file from my windows machine to my linux machine?21:19
pedro3005hey ghostofmybrain_21:20
ghostofmybrain_hello pedro21:20
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, where is the file?21:20
ghostofmybrain_on my windows machine. I'm trying to get it to the linux machine. Both are connected to the internet through the same router21:21
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/154/copy-files-remotely-using-scp-in-ubuntu21:21
jamesrflaDoes anybody know what Bus Speed DMI is?21:23
jamesrflaOh wait nevermind found it21:25
ghostofmybrain_how do I install the pachage openssh-server without using thesynaptic package manager21:26
jamesrflasudo apt-get install openssh-server21:27
ghostofmybrain_oh yeah lol21:27
ghostofmybrain_hmmm, I can't get that to work21:30
benny1Hello, Im new to linux, i have installed ubuntu 9.04 on my ps3. does anyone know how to change display settings to match my HD tv?21:31
jamesrflaghostofmybrain_: try sudo apt-get update then try that commmand again21:33
phillwghostofmybrain_: are you thinking about letting the computer you're putting openssh-server any where an internet connection ?21:36
phillw*anywhere near an*21:36
ghostofmybrain_yes21:36
phillwghostofmybrain_: may i advise caution, I rushed mine and got royally hacked and tunnlelled through21:37
jamesrflalol21:37
benny1is it possible to downgrade to ubuntu 9.04 if i upgrade to 9.10 and i have compatibility issues?21:37
jamesrflabenny1: never tried a downgrade before. I would just back up your data and do a clean install21:38
benny1jamesrfla: Thanks, also i Xubuntu something I install after ubuntu or is this a derivative of it?21:38
benny1is*21:38
ghostofmybrain_how do I uninstall it? I figured out a way to do it without the openssh thing21:39
jamesrflaghostofmybrain_: sudo apt-get remove openssh-server21:39
jamesrflabenny1: Xubuntu is different from Ubuntu21:40
phillwghostofmybrain_: head over to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046738  you will find an excellent resource by bodhi-zazen .... twiddles thumbs waiting for some to say his stuff is not to be followed ;-)21:40
phillwghostofmybrain_: you'll have to trust me on that one - it is LOT more involved than it looks - i made one mistake and it all went horribly wrong21:41
benny1jamesrfla: I have heard I can install a window manager called fluxbox which is lighter on my limited system resources than the standard one is but i can't find it in synaptic, am i doing something wrong?21:41
ghostofmybrain_phillw: I installed lynx and just downloaded it on the linux machine instead of having to download it on windows and transfer it over21:42
jamesrflaYeah there is a window manager called fluxbox but not sure if it is in the repository21:42
benny1how does someone do that if its not there?21:42
jamesrfladownload the .deb from fluxbox web site21:42
benny1do I open that like a normal program as in installing from an exe in windows or is it something i have to do in terminal?21:43
phillwbenny1: you would need to backup your /home area. after that, you have a choice of xubuntu with xfce or in 6 weeks time, lubuntu with lxde -- depends on how tight you need to run it in21:43
phillwghostofmybrain_: I'd REALLY advise reading that thread, honest !!!21:44
benny1phillw: I want to use the lightest possible system i dont care about looking fancy. as long as I can full screen vlc. and use the internet and a torrent client I will be satisfied, speed is of the essence.21:44
ghostofmybrain_phillw: ok, I will read it now21:45
benny1phillw: I have only been going on this for 4 days now i dont think i have anything of value to back up if i install one of those I can have firefox, transmission and vlc anyway right?21:46
phillwI dunno about the over-head of xfce Vs lxde, but as far as i know, lxde is the lower overhead. xubuntu is stable and can be got now, lubuntu is only available as 10.04 alpha, but as with all the ubuntu families, they all go 'live' at the end of April - so have a try and see which suits you best.21:46
phillwbenny1: xunbuntu comes with FFox default browser, lubuntu comes with chromium default browser. To put it very simplistcally.. lubuntu requires less resources than xubuntu, but there is no point using lubuntu and putting FFox on - you would probably be better with xubuntu, UNLESS you want the lxde GUI over the XCFE one.21:49
phillw<< hopes I'm some where near correct :-)21:49
benny1phillw: thanks, I am able to do everything at the moment I want really only having a couple of problems, 1. system kinda slow and not using vram as swap like YDL linux did, but this is much more user freindly. 2, and I think they are the same so I put them as one query, when full screen in vlc video appears divided into columns with green lines. (vertical) I think this is cause my display is at incorrect res and refresh rate...21:50
benny1is that i or L as a prefix? never used chromium, i imagine it will do fine.21:51
phillwbenny1: maybe it is better to tell us the spec of your computer and we can tell you which of the family to use ?21:51
benny1oh this is on a PS3.21:51
phillwbenny, lubuntu is a little 'L' - as to putting stuff via PS3 ... pass. You'd have to ask of someone who has more knowledge21:52
benny1I have no PC hence why I am stuggling along with this, although actually seems better than windows, despite being pretty sure not quite configured correctly is as fast as many of my mates win pc's!21:53
benny1Okay i will have a look and see if lubuntu supports ps3.21:53
benny1do you know how to manually edit display settings?21:54
phillwI don't know about PS3's, sorry - I'll have a dig and see if I can find you a resource for information -- give me a cple of minutes.21:55
benny1phillw:  i have found a couple over at psubuntu.cm about black bars / overscan but i'm apprehensive about sudo and its all over my head.21:55
benny1psubuntu.com sorry.21:56
phillwbenny1: try #ubuntu-ps321:56
benny1ahhh thanks21:56
benny1is there a way to favourite these in pidgin?21:56
phillwbenny1: dunno, I haven't tried ... give me moment !!!22:00
benny1sorry.22:01
phillwbenny1: yes there is22:02
phillwClick on 'Conversations' then "add"22:02
phillwit should then appear in your buddy list ... that's kewl :-)22:03
benny1phillw: Thanks! I'll never remember all these22:03
phillwbenny1:  I'm adding mine, now !!!22:03
ghostofmybrain_how do you search a directory for a file, and how do you go up one level in teh directory?22:05
phillwghostofmybrain_: to search you use ls22:06
phillwwith varying flags22:06
phillwls -a = all files, including hidden22:06
phillwghostofmybrain_: if you go here --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1052065  you can get the manual, it's well worth having !!!!22:08
benny1phillw: Another newbie question... What can I do in ubuntu that I can't do with windows. is there any particular advantages, apart from maybe stability security. I realise it's an OS and the things to do will likely be in other programs, but what can I tinker with to learn it and how linux works as an absolute beginner?22:09
phillwbenny1: you see the thread posting above ? -- go get it !!!!22:10
benny1phillw:  Thanks should be plenty of food for thought.22:12
phillwIf this area is quiet, then the beginners area on the main forum is --> http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=32622:12
phillwIt's run by the same people on all the forum areas,22:12
benny1Is it quite active? the psubuntu, com forum was almost dead with inactivity!22:13
benny1this might be a daft question... But I think Ubuntu is good, never had any cause to not use windows before, same old familiar windows... but if it runs this well on the limited PS3 resources... why on earth isn't it on most PC's?22:17
phillwahhh.... now, there you would have to ask someone else :-D22:18
ghostofmybrain_How do I stop something that I have running in the background?22:18
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, kill <pid>22:19
pedro3005or killall <name>22:19
benny1get a problem with windows, you are on you're own... get a problem with linux there seems to be a good community of freindly advisors to point you in the right direction.22:19
pedro3005benny1, :D22:21
benny1Oh hi pedro, yeah i was referring to you aswell!!22:22
pedro3005benny1, hope you got stuff working22:22
benny1yeah only a few niggles now... I have found guides for somethings I want to do, but i'm worried about destroying things in the process...22:23
phillwbenny1: if in doubt, either ask here, or on the forum22:24
phillwbtw @ pedro3005  BOOO!!22:25
pedro3005phillw, :(22:25
benny1Okay does this look safe to do, as little as I know so far, I know that I dont want to be typing sudo in every five minutes....22:25
benny1http://psubuntu.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2391&sid=ba756d678515818e09691b900010144d22:25
pedro3005benny1, looks safe22:27
benny1pedro3005: Thanks I started it before but when i rebooted it wasn't how the guide said it would be so I guess I didnt quite do it correctly.22:28
benny1sudo nano -w /etc/init.d/fbset.sh - didnt give the file that the guide anticipated it was empty so I assume I created it. and thus there isn't anything looking at the file to read it and change accordingly.22:30
pedro3005benny1, are you sure you typed it correctly?22:32
benny1I thought so, I checked it but then again as the resolution and refresh rate aren't correct its a little tricky to read!22:33
pedro3005benny1, heh22:33
benny1would there normally be a file at that location, even if not on ps3?22:33
pedro3005benny1, only if you installed fbset I guess22:34
pedro3005benny1, are you sure you installed it?22:35
benny1Not anymore!22:35
benny1I did type and return the following....22:36
benny1benny@PS3:~$ sudo fbset22:36
benny1mode "1688x964-60"22:36
benny1    # D: 74.178 MHz, H: 33.717 kHz, V: 59.942 Hz22:36
benny1    geometry 1688 964 1688 964 3222:36
benny1    timings 13481 264 160 94 62 88 522:36
benny1    bcast true22:36
benny1    laced true22:36
pedro3005benny1, oh wait22:36
benny1    rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,8/2422:36
benny1endmode22:36
pedro3005benny1, I think the file is supposed to be empty22:36
pedro3005benny1, so go ahead22:36
benny1geometry matches the resolution i am it, which is a little smaller than the screen, 1688x964 @ 30 mhz refresh...   I need to edit this to be 1920x1080 @ 60 to match my tv so im not sure where I am going wrong.22:38
pedro3005benny1, did you create the file /etc/init.d/fbset.sh and put the info there accordingly?22:40
benny1Would "udo nano -w /etc/init.d/fbset.sh" do this if it wasn't already present?22:41
benny1sudo oops22:41
benny1brb going to smoke a cigarette outside...22:42
benny1oh btw if this is of any assistance I am using "petitboot" as the boot loader not sure if this applies to anyone not on a ps3 instead of "kboot" this is displaying at the correct resoltion22:44
ghostofmybrain_so how do I stop a background program again?22:45
ghostofmybrain_kill pid, but how do I know the pid?22:46
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, ps aux to see all the process22:47
pedro3005ps aux | grep firefox22:47
pedro3005that will find process with firefox on the name22:47
pedro3005:)22:47
geirhaghostofmybrain_: A process you backgrounded in an interactive bash shell?22:48
ghostofmybrain_geirha: I don't think so. I'm just at a command line22:48
geirhaUse jobs to list it, then ''kill %1'' if it's job 1 you want to kill.22:48
geirhaIf you ran it with ''command &'' in the same "command-line", then that should work.22:49
ghostofmybrain_argh I can't figure it out22:50
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, what?22:52
ghostofmybrain_I can't figure out how to end the process22:52
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, also you may want to use killall if you know the name of the process22:52
ghostofmybrain_I can't figure out the name of the process lol22:53
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, ps aux22:54
ghostofmybrain_Yeah, it was really confusing looking22:54
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, try ps aux | less22:56
ghostofmybrain_ok23:00
ghostofmybrain_now how do I get back to the command line?23:00
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, Q23:00
ghostofmybrain_oh hurray! I did it! thanks :D23:02
pedro3005ghostofmybrain_, :D23:02
JinkhinJpedro 3005, hooked up to a direct cable connection. internet came through perfect. completed the instrucitons you said "cd /media/cdrom/pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter*". System ran number of changes. I also went to the update manager and had some 200 updates listed and installed all of them. Still not sure if my Wireless Linksys USB will work once I remove the modem and try to go wireless.23:16
pedro3005JinkhinJ, it should ;)23:16
JinkhinJwill see what happens23:17
JinkhinJthanks23:17
