faronHello again everybody.Looking for advice from our beloved Ubuntu community...I would like to test out this "Greasemonkey" thing. My question is...should I install the much newer version from the Firefox site or,should I install the much older version from Synaptic ? And,just for your info...I'm running Xubuntu 8.04 with Firefox {latest vers} {3.6}00:41
faronSorry,Sysi.Me again.What do you think about that ^^^^^^^^ ?00:50
Myrttifaron: fyi, it's almost 3am in Finland where Sysi is00:55
faronOh,wow !00:55
faronjst looking for a little more input00:55
rwwfaron: I tend to use the newer version from the Firefox site. It's a matter of personal preference, though. If you install it from Synaptic, it'll get installed for all users, whereas if you get it from Firefox, it'll just be installed for you. Apart from the version differences, that's about all that's different.00:59

nrodineHello?02:12
nrodineI need help :(02:12
nrodineMy wireless internet is not working on my HP dv6000 laptop. It is working on my Vista partition. It was also not working on Kubuntu.02:13
nrodineAlso, the wired Ethernet connection works (as I am using it now)02:13
xiainxyou probably don't have the driver installed.02:19
xiainxYou should try installing the xubuntu restricted extras package from the application manager, that fixed it for me02:19
nrodinewhere is application manager? Applications > .... > Application Manager? Sorry, new to xubuntu, used to kubuntu02:21
xiainxummmm02:21
nrodineohh, Add/Remove Applications?02:21
xiainxYes, that's it02:22
nrodineor would you rather I use adept manager02:22
xiainxAdd/Remove Applications should be just fine02:22
xiainxnow search for Xubuntu Restricted Extras02:22
nrodineok, I installed it02:26
nrodineIf I don't come back in 5 minutes, assume the worst (aka, it didn't work and I will be back in 10 in that case)02:26
xiainxgot it ;)02:26
nrodineHello?02:28
nrodineYeah, no, that didn't work :(02:28
xiainx:(02:28
nrodinealso, my wireless switch is always red02:29

xiainxhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2568302:32
xiainxor is that too old... just a sec02:33
nrodineyeah, I am going to try that now02:35
nrodineI like step 0, "clear out any mess from existing failed attempts to use ndiswrapper. " lol02:35
_Techie_umm02:48
_Techie_i would like to point out that using broadcom drivers in ndiswrapper may not be the solution02:49
_Techie_as the broadcom card that is listed in lshw is the gigabit wired network connection, not the wireless02:50
nrodinewired?02:52
nrodineno, it is the BCM4312 802.11b/g one, wireless02:53
nrodine+is confused+02:53
nrodineok, I need to boot up windows to get some files03:02
nrodineI will be back later03:02
rwwnrodine: BCM4312 doesn't need ndiswrapper :\03:04
rwwplug into ethernet, install "bcmwl-kernel-source" and "b43-fwcutter", say yes when it prompts about firmware, and you're done03:04
nrodineok03:07
MarkSideHi all03:07
MarkSideHaving problems getting an Xubuntu install to get an IP address in a VirtualBox VM - could anyone point me to any good network-troubleshooting guides?03:08

_Techie_anybody here have experience and or knowledge of 32bit vs 64bit?07:57
Sysi64bit supports more ram, otherly no big difference07:58
_Techie_wow, Sysi... you actually would be the wisest and best person to answer07:58
_Techie_i know your about the same age as me, but damn i have the utmost respect07:59
Sysii think it's pretty complicated deep down, but main difference is that08:00
_Techie_the main thing i was thinking of, is installing a 32bit OS on a 64bit capable CPU goign to restrict it, and will any slight performance boost be gained by using a 64bit OS08:00
_Techie_coz ive lived my life on 32bit and i just found out that my Celeron D is 64bit08:00
Sysi32bit on 64bit works well08:01
_Techie_this i know08:01
_Techie_but might there be a performance boost gained by switching from 32bit to 64bit?08:01
Sysipropably not, at least noticeable08:02
_Techie_hrmm08:02
Sysii didn't notice08:02
_Techie_another thing comes to mind08:02
Sysithere was also something about that 64bit can even be slower if there's not very much ram08:03
_Techie_i cant seem to implement a 30% overclock on this CPU and achieve a succesful boot, might this be due to my OS being 32bit and not supporting more than 3.5ghz?08:03
Sysii haven't heard about that kind of thing08:04
_Techie_hrmm, i will have to do my research08:04
_Techie_going to a LAN tommorow hosted by a local computer company so ill ask some of the guys there08:05
Sysibtw, Techie, you know some stuff that i don't08:22
_Techie_i knwo this08:25
_Techie_still doent change the fact that you know alot more than me in areas08:25
Sysiour biology teacher told us to watch monty python :D08:26

_Techie_heya deathdefineslife20:32
deathdefineslifeI'm trying to install xubuntu on an eeepc 1005HA via unetbootin20:33
_Techie_cool, any trouble?20:33
deathdefineslifeAnd I can do the installation just fine, but when I have rebooted (and it's trying to boot for the first time) I get almost a black screen.20:33
_Techie_any more information than a black screen20:34
deathdefineslifeAll I can see is a blinking marker (but not interactable of course..) and some weird arrow like thingy20:34
_Techie_might this black screen have some minor details?20:34
_Techie_hrmm20:34
deathdefineslife_Techie_ such as?20:34
deathdefineslifeoh, this is actually after grub etc20:34
_Techie_after grub20:35
_Techie_hrmm20:35
_Techie_are you able ot boot into text mode?20:35
deathdefineslifebut neither normal or failsafe works20:35
deathdefineslifenope20:35
_Techie_thats very peculiar20:35
_Techie_in grub, select the option to edit the entry20:36
_Techie_add "text" to the end20:36
_Techie_so, random gibberish from default boot -- quiet splash text20:36
_Techie_you may also wish to remove splash20:36
_Techie_and quiet20:36
_Techie_that should give you an idea on where exactly its hanging20:37
deathdefineslifegood idea20:38
_Techie_i have a feeling it may be a problem loading usplash20:38
_Techie_and possibly GDM20:38
deathdefineslifeI get the exact same error20:39

Sysideathdefineslife: ubuntu 9.10?20:39
_Techie_that means its after grub, but before Xubuntu does anything at all20:39
deathdefineslifeSysi yea, xubuntu 9.1020:39
Sysii'm running lucid on 1005ha just now20:40
deathdefineslifeInteresting.. :s20:40
Sysiand i've ran karmic also20:40
Sysiwifi worked pretty badly20:41
Sysithat sounds like gdm/xorg crash20:42
deathdefineslifeHmm, any idea on how to troubleshoot?20:42
Sysipress ctrl alt f120:42
deathdefineslifenothing happens20:43
deathdefineslifeshould I try vanilla ubuntu first perhaps?20:43
Sysiwhat does vanilla ubuntu mean? i've heard that couple of times but never seen anywhere20:43
_Techie_vanilla means plain20:44
Sysilike vanilla kernel?20:44
_Techie_he means, regular old ubuntu, not any of the derivitaves such as xubuntu kubuntu or lubuntu20:44
Sysiit shouldn't make difference but reinstall is a (bad) choice20:45
deathdefineslifeHmm, what should I do then?20:45
_Techie_have you tried installing the LTS version?20:45
Sysihardy propably don't work well20:46
Sysitoo new hardware20:46
_Techie_i would recomment jaunty20:46
_Techie_but i think that a LTS release may be better as far as support20:47
Sysihave you tries to boot several times?20:47
deathdefineslife_Techie_ I20:47
deathdefineslifeI20:47
deathdefineslifeI'll try that20:47
