[00:15] pleia2: I figured we'd just have a simple html site with a bunch of downloads. Something simple that's easy to script. [03:28] doctormo: sounds good - maybe host on your people.ubuntu.com page? [03:31] sure [03:31] Or a domain [03:31] But it'd be raw and basic [03:31] I have loads of hosting space if we need, I wouldn't object to a domain for the project [03:46] great~! [19:10] doctormo: heh, ubuntu-learning.org was just registered recently :\ [19:11] looks like she bought .com/.org [19:11] 11 days ago [19:11] but maybe we don't want that anyway :) [19:13] we can be more clever [21:05] i have installed ubunutu onto my dell mini 10v - 9.10 for netbooks [21:06] how do i get rid of the desktop launcher - its a bit horrid [21:06] everything else is great [21:07] is there not a pull down menu instead or a 'dock' or task bar type thing i can use? [21:08] macfriendly: you will have better luck asking in #ubuntu [21:08] but I believe you can install ubuntu-desktop [21:09] ok thanks - i did list but thought this was more relevant place 2 be sorry [21:09] no problem :) and this is a very relevant place to be but not exactly for support related questions [21:10] the 'launcher' reminds me of macintosh performa running system 7.5 .....lol [22:28] pleia2: she? [22:30] doctormo: the registrant of the domain, some woman in oregon [22:32] I mean, we could just go with ubuntulearningmaterials.org or something [22:33] or uclpmaterials.org or ... [22:33] pleia2: Or just be really cool and out of the box with a public facing name. [22:33] yeah, being clever is cool too :) [22:35] I vote for ubuntu-owl.com -> it knows all. [22:36] I like it! [22:36] why not ask the person who owns ubuntu-learning.com if she would be willing to part with it for a good cause ? [22:37] IdleOne: to be fair, we aren't the whole ubuntu-learning project, just the materials and promotions part [22:37] although I kinda like the idea of a Linux Owl [22:37] it wouldn't really be fair to the moodle end of the project [22:39] IdleOne: I like the idea of Linux Owl, make it less Ubuntu specific and friendly to others, but I don't like "Linux" [22:39] ok well like the penguin is named Tux [22:39] the Owl needs a learning/teaching centric name [22:40] * IdleOne turns on the gears [22:40] hmmm [22:40] Leanerd :) [22:41] ok maybe not [22:41] hard to spell [22:41] foss-owl ? [22:41] nahh [22:41] something cleaver and cute [22:41] clever? [22:41] yeah clever [22:42] sic [22:42] yeah, no cleavers near the owl please [22:42] hahaha [22:42] * pleia2 ponders [22:43] foss is my preferred abbreviation, as tempting as oss-owl is [22:44] pleia2: Where's the freedom in that ;-) [22:44] pleia2: say oss-owl out loud a couple times [22:44] doctormo: indeed :) [22:44] IdleOne: haha [22:44] ok you got it :) [22:44] Why not just call it f-owl ? [22:44] Freedom Owl ;-P [22:44] F-Owl is an awesome name [22:45] because that sounds like we're flipping off the owl [22:45] err yeah [22:45] that said, freedomowl is available [22:45] or freedom-owl [22:45] typing it a lot makes me think "owl" is a very strange word [22:45] ubuntu-owl.org is a great name for the domain [22:46] OK looks like we're going with ubuntu-owl.org [22:46] I was thinking more as an official mascot for the learning project, the Owl needs a name [22:46] :) [22:46] or .com? or both? [22:46] both [22:46] pleia2: If you can afford [22:46] redirect .com to .org [22:46] k, we'll use .org and I'll snap up .com too so we have it (.coms are cheap) [22:46] oh pleia2 is flipping this bill [22:47] well then yeah it is up to you pleia2 [22:48] I am seeing a course for elementary aged kids and videos with the Owl giving lessons in class rooms :) [22:48] My daughter would love that and pay attention [22:50] kids click on the cute little owl and learn ubuntu/linux/whatever [22:50] * IdleOne needs to win the lottery [22:50] IdleOne: No you don't, you need the rich in society to all become poor. [22:51] :-P [22:51] doctormo: we need Canonical to start sponsoring this project with some real funds. [22:51] Ubuntu learning in schools [22:52] imagine the work you could get done if you had more time [22:52] pleia2 also :) [22:53] we need to have a good project before we ask for money :) [22:53] IdleOne: Plus currently thinking isn't centered around making freely accessable education. [22:53] pleia2: I understand that but the benefits of bank rolling this project outweigh the cost [22:54] it could be so much bigger [22:55] IdleOne: It could, but what we have to deal with is a cultural problem, traditional educational materials people believe in making propritary, locked down materials. [22:55] A product [22:55] Not a value add loss leader which helps your main business. [22:55] (which is certainly how Microsoft sees educational materials atm, they're hurting us through offering tons of online courses) [22:56] learning is not a business, least it shouldn't be [22:57] I don't think that Canonical should invest in this to make money but to give back more. One day the kids who learned about Ubuntu at school, could be the teachers giving the same classes to other kids [22:57] that is Ubuntu! [22:57] * IdleOne is an idealist [23:01] IdleOne: Yes, but people are people and some are stuck in their ways. [23:02] and canonical's model is to give certifications and do professional training - which there is a market for [23:02] while it would be nice for them to do friendly teaching things, they barely have the resources for their pro training [23:03] I guess it would be argued that mark should open his pocket more, but there are dozens of projects that could use that line (and do) [23:11] pleia2: Actually it would be nice if the resources spent on making closed materials were opened up, just so that cost burden could be lifted from canonical. [23:12] atm they're trying to write everythign themselves. [23:14] * pleia2 nods [23:18] I won't pretend to understand the whole financial aspect and I wouldn't presume to say Mark needs to open his wallet more. Just think that there is so many cool things that could be done with this project and that money would attract more people to work on it [23:18] ok guys, we have ubuntu-owl.org configured [23:18] \o/
