=== hexdump is now known as hexdump_ [01:25] How might I go about obtaining the linux-backports-modules-karmic package? [01:26] I found one through the Ubuntu website, but it had a dependency problem and couldn't be installed. [01:27] I'm really new, and if I could just get Xubuntu online I could start learning this stuff without having to retart from windows to linux all the time. lol [01:28] I would just plug my computer in ethernet, but I loaned out my cord for my friend to go online with his PS3. [01:30] Anyone? [01:31] <_Techie_> what do you need help with? [01:32] <_Techie_> WASasquatch: whats the problem? [01:37] <_Techie_> WASasquatch: if your not willing to let me know what the problem is, then i cant help you [01:39] Okay [01:39] So I have a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter [01:39] I plug it in, and it is recognized. However it won't connect to my router. [01:40] <_Techie_> have you selected the correct encryption type? [01:40] I was told to run "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic" which the package doesn't exist on my system, and I have no internet to get the package. [01:40] Indeed. [01:40] All the settings are correct. [01:40] I even tethered my phone with no encryptions and it couldn't connect to it either. [01:41] <_Techie_> i presume the belin adapter is backwards compatable with G devices [01:41] Indeed. [01:42] <_Techie_> hrmm [01:42] Belkin 5FD8053 N Wireless [01:42] Dual-band. [01:43] I am also running the current stable release of Xubuntu, 9.10. [01:43] <_Techie_> i cant seem to turn up anything [01:44] <_Techie_> hrmm [01:44] <_Techie_> what encryption is the network, WPA-PSK2? [01:45] Yeah [01:45] Wait... [01:45] I'm not sure. been awhile since I set it, windows just says WAP2. [01:46] <_Techie_> try logging into the router and disabling the encryption of the network [01:46] <_Techie_> try to connect to the network with security off [01:47] <_Techie_> this wil give us an idea whether its a problem with the adapter in Xubuntu or just a problem authenticating [01:47] Well, like I said, I tethered my phone with no encryption and it was unable to connect as well. I don't think it's the router, more the Network Manager. [01:48] I have a PCMCIA Linksys adapter as well, which is not detected, anyway to try it? [01:49] <_Techie_> i wouldnt have a clue [01:52] Do you know where to download the linux-backports-modules-karmic package? [01:53] <_Techie_> if you want to "Download" it without using aptitude [01:53] <_Techie_> http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/linux-backports-modules-karmic-generic === rww_ is now known as rw === rw is now known as rww [03:29] When I download linux-backports-modules-karmic or karmic-generic I can't install them. It has a big red warning/error stating there is a dependency problem. [03:29] And apparently I need to install these to connect my Belkin adapter [03:31] try something like prevu === robinking623 is now known as iGoog1e === iGoog1e is now known as robinking623 === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [14:35] hi, I was looking for something like menu.lst or grub.conf, but the things don't quite look like I'm used to in /boot/grub. where would I have to look? [14:36] try /etc/default/grub [14:36] what are you looking to change? [14:38] charlie-tca: I wasn't gonna change anything. I was just wanting to get the right parameters for the grub.conf, that is actually referenced on my machine [14:38] charlie-tca: I'm masochist, I'm looking into gentoo :) [14:39] mainly I'm not too sure about the whole hd0,1..45 business, so I wanted to see what the xubuntu parition would be [14:39] I don't know grub.conf [14:40] well thanks anyway! :) [14:40] grub legacy (grub1) used menu.lst and grub2 uses /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d [14:41] ah okay, maybe that's why it all looked so differently. I've never really configured grub2 yet. [14:42] alright, then it's gonna be guessing and rebooting. === Myrtti_ is now known as Myrtti === IlmariL_ is now known as IlmariL [16:45] imho grub2 takes way too long to load on some machines [16:45] (sorry wrong channel) [16:56] * charlie-tca nods to both comments [17:41] hello [17:41] good aftanonn [17:41] i need some help getting xubuntu to work [17:42] i cant get past the login screen [17:42] im on live cd [17:42] any help greatly appreciated [17:42] And? [17:42] and i need to login [17:42] You have the login screen up ? [17:42] but how [17:42] yes [17:42] its up [17:42] User = ubuntu [17:42] password = hit enter [17:43] i tried that [17:43] no go [17:43] ubuntu all small letters, password is blank box, just hit enter on it? [17:44] nope [17:44] Try resetting gdm, if you can, using Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+k [17:44] then try it again [17:45] what version is this? [17:45] lets see [17:45] 9.10 [17:46] anyone know is xubuntu 10.04 still using not using pulse? [17:46] Never had 9.10 stop at the login, are you sure it booted to the cd? [17:46] yea [17:46] its an old pc [17:46] 10.04 is using pulseaudio [17:46] but this never happens [17:47] usually loads up normally [17:47] Old pc should not matter. seems to be something wrong with the cd itself [17:48] Try ubuntu and password = ubuntu [17:49] mobius111001: I am running both 32bit and 64bit Xubuntu on two different systems with pulseaudio and no issues to date [17:49] * charlie-tca thinks the volume not muting is great, too! [17:51] hey charlie-tca....on 10.04 or 9.10? just moved to xubuntu with 9.10 because pulse and my internal microphone didn't want to play nice. i was hoping 10.04 didn't move to pulse. granted, i'm not very fond of xfce ;-) [17:51] 10.04 [17:52] thx for help charlie [17:52] did it work? [17:52] did pulse come by default? [17:52] yea [17:52] :) [17:52] mobius111001: yes [17:52] thx man [17:52] My volume options are oss and pulse only [17:52] Tronika: You are welcome [17:53] shoot. thanks for the info charlie-tca [17:53] gotta go [17:53] cya later [17:53] Good luck [18:17] has anyone been testing the 10.04 xubuntu beta? [18:20] i have it [18:20] yes, cur [18:21] I run it on two systems, 32bit and 64bit [18:21] * charlie-tca thinks it might be a poll [18:21] how is it going for you? I am really having trepidations about it... I had a lot of issues with Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop... and I am wondering how the beta is working [18:22] pretty well for me [18:22] As long as I stay away from the nvidia hardware driver on 64 bit, great! [18:22] Seems to be enough bugs for a beta [18:23] okay another silly question... I have an intel core2 solo 1.4ghz processor, is it smart to switch over to Xubuntu with this chipset? [18:24] 9.04 Ubuntu works like a champ. Most of my problems have just been fault of my own. [18:24] sure... I think so. I run xubuntu on all my machines, including the 2.2GHz 64bit athlon [18:24] Try the live cd, see if it works for you [18:24] It is not as easy as Ubuntu to configure, most of the time [18:27] cool. I have been looking into the xfce a lot more recently. What do you mean by "easy"? [18:27] gnome configures a lot of things that you do manually in xubuntu [18:28] Xfce gives you more choices, I think. Also makes you work a little more to do what you want, sometimes [18:29] I am new to ubuntu and linux (diddling around since october/november) but I like the ability to tinker with everything. it has bit me in the ars a few times, though. I don't mind the work. [18:47] thanks [19:42] not actually #right but, have others experienced that lucid losts dns? [19:47] and working again.. [19:47] I saw some questions about it in #ubuntu+1 the other day [19:48] It does seem to happen intermittent to some users === dvdm_ is now known as dvdm [21:53] Hello, my panels are gone, canĀ“t open Panel in Settings [21:53] Is there any fix?
