James147lappie: knetworkmanager is the easiest way00:03
lappiedo i need to install knetworkmanager or is that the one already installed?00:04
James147lappie: should already be installed (and in your systray)00:04
lappieahh, ok it was, hmm. i know i enetered the correct wep key, but i dont know much about the other settings,00:05
=== Jim_Morrison is now known as Dioniso
zusis there anything else i should install apart from kgpg to encrypt and decrypt  anything?00:05
James147lappie: Try changing "Authentication" to "Shared key" I find that helps when connecting to wep00:06
zusit not decrypting my gmail00:06
lappieahh ok i will do that :) is there any other settings i should be aware of?00:06
James147lappie: make sure your are using wep i find knetworkmanager sometimes sets it to wep when the encription should be wpa00:08
lappieif it helps its a linksys modem/router w both wireless and ethernet connectabilities, i am connecting via wireless connected to cable internet with a wep key00:08
lappieidk, i'm probably gonna go with ubuntustudio anyhow, i just wanted 2 play around w all the derivatives of ubuntu b4 i chose00:10
lappiei started w ubuntu because it was the easiest to get 2 know :0 but now im not such a noob to linux and ubuntu, i think im ready to choose the one im gonna keep :)...  thanks for the help00:12
zuslappie,  i have the same train of thought. im on kubuntu atm. prolly going to stay here on lucid but continue to try other flavors and stay rooted in lucid for the lts00:15
lappiezus i do like how lucid looks n feels but ive heard its pretty buggy, also it did not play any sounds00:17
zuslappie,  yeah im waiting for it yet. but thats what i think ill do is keep with lucid and play around on the other.00:18
lappiezus your sound isnt working either?00:19
zusim on 9.10 kubuntu right now.00:19
lappiewelp, i just finished burning ubuntustudio, time to go check it out :) cu later00:20
James147lappie: zus: lucid is still in beta testing so there are going to be bugs just hope they get fixed by final release00:20
lappiekewl any timeframe on when the final will be done?00:21
James147lappie: end of april00:21
zussometime in april i read00:21
lappieoh nice!00:21
James147lappie: aimed at the 29 I think00:21
lappiebut ill be working 16 hour days then :( so i guess it'll be october b4 i get 2 play with it00:22
antlarrhi00:28
antlarraufs or unionfs ?00:28
Typos_King?00:28
Typos_Kingwhat about onionfs?00:28
Typos_Kingor carrotfs?00:29
antlarr:)00:29
antlarrI was asking for experiences with any of the two00:30
Typos_Kingcan't say :|00:32
phoenix_hello everyone00:32
phoenix_i am not able to update vlc player00:32
James147antlarr: you might want to ask a more spific question to get better responses00:32
James147phoenix_: What error are you getting and what are you sueing to update it?00:33
antlarrsorry, I'm thinking on testing a union filesystem, and was wondering if I should try aufs or unionfs00:34
phoenix_currenty the version of my vlc is 1.0.2 golden eye, i saw in the vlc home page that the current version is 1.0.5, when i search in the software management, it lists the version 1.0.2 only00:34
zusgnupg, gnupg2, gnupg-agent and kgpg. do i need all these to encrypt and decrypt files? i alrerady have kgpg. (also want to know if i imported my keys properly.00:34
antlarrI've never used any of them, and just wanted to know if there was a preferred one for general use00:34
phoenix_James147: i am not getting any errors00:35
James147phoenix_: the software managment software works of repositites of packages that don't always include the very latest version of everything00:36
Typos_Kingphoenix_:     click on 'update' or so a -> sudo apt-get update; to update the repositories lists00:37
phoenix_i enabled the beta and multiverse etc in the software sources.do you mean even thought i enable it i wont get the latest version, if so what is the way to get the latest update00:37
Typos_Kingphoenix_:     it may onr may not be there, either way, I don't think there's a humoungous difference from .0.2 to .0.500:38
phoenix_the currect version , in the fullscreen mode does not cover the taskbar panel, i have to do it everytime manually,00:39
phoenix_so i thought that a update could fix the problem00:39
phoenix_Typos_King: i am running the command. it hung up.the message->"99% [waiting for headers]"00:42
phoenix_Typos_King: finished00:42
Typos_Kingok00:43
Typos_Kingnow you can check again your list00:43
Typos_Kingyou canll... do00:43
Typos_Kingapt-cache search vlc00:43
phoenix_Typos_King: what does the command do00:43
James147phoenix_: can't see an 'easy' way to get the updated version execpt compiling from source or looking for an updated repo00:44
Typos_Kingphoenix_:     searches the package entry :)00:44
phoenix_James147: i am a newbie00:45
Typos_Kingchances are, vlc site has a .deb already anyway00:45
Typos_Kingand you can just get that and install it00:45
James147phoenix_: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=vlc <- 1.0.2 in karmic 1.0.5 in lucid00:45
phoenix_Typos_King: can you give the link00:45
Typos_Kingahem00:45
Typos_Kingwhy you need .0.5?  the versioning isn't that much of a biggie it seems, but anyway00:46
James147Typos_King: cant find one, ubuntu link just describes how to install it from reops00:46
Typos_Kingthat's like upgrading from a Mug to a Glass00:47
phoenix_i think the reason why i am not able to update to 1.0.5 is because mine is not lucid00:47
James147phoenix_: lucid is still in beta so I wouldnt advice upgrading yet00:47
James147phoenix_: It comes out end of april so you dont have too long to wait00:48
phoenix_i am using kde 4.4.100:48
Typos_Kingphoenix_:     they seem to refer to the repositories, so I gather you may not be able to run it even if you can get it00:50
phoenix_i heard that there will be a delay in the release of lucid , since it is still unstable , is that true00:50
zushow do i see if these are installed? gnupg, gnupg2, gnupg-agent00:50
Typos_KingI mean, you can get the .deb, no biigies on that, then the install may say 'this or that dependency' missing00:50
James147phoenix_: Havent heard anything00:50
phoenix_Typos_King: ok , will wait till lucid is released00:51
James147phoenix_: But I havent really been paying much attention to it00:51
phoenix_James147: why00:51
Typos_Kingzus:    apt-cache pkgnames | grep -i gnupg00:51
James147phoenix_: If you really want it, it isent that har dto compile it... most of the time :)00:51
phoenix_James147: i tried compiling a source and ended up nothing00:52
zusTypos_King,  if i get red text on output00:52
Typos_Kingred text means the matches00:53
James147phoenix_: it will come out when it comes out, atm I am in no rush to upgrade everything to it :) have a laptop with it on but thats it atm00:53

kevin_I've been wanting to try kubuntu and several other KDE distros on my computer but have been unsuccessful as of yet. Every live CD i've tried won't boot correctly.01:52
kevin_It will go through the startup sequence with the hard drive symbol then the tools, and then it stops starts blinking and won't load. Any idea how to fix the problem?01:53
kevin_I haven't tried launching it in verbose mode, that may give me a clue. But the odd thing is this only happens with KDE, I've never had problems with GNOME or Xfce.01:54
James147kevin_: What distros/versions have you tryed?02:02
kevin_Kubuntu 9.10, Linux Mint 802:03
kevin_I have tried the live cd on a different computer and it worked on that. It could be hardware issue, but GNOME works, wouldn't they both have the same hardware requirements?02:04
James147kevin_: you could try installing kubuntu in ubuntu (sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop) could be one piece of hardawre that kde is being more fussy about02:06
kevin_I'll have to try that sometime, I am currently running Ubuntu 10.04 Beta, perhaps I'll try adding kde. What's the package name?02:07
kevin_For terminal purposes02:07
kevin_sorry... I'm an idiot you already answered that question.02:08
James147kevin_: "kubuntu-desktop" or "kde-minimal" or "kde-full" depending on what you want02:08
kevin_What's the difference between kubuntu and kde-full?02:09
James147kevin_: you only need to install one depending on how much stuff you want installed02:09
kevin_ok thanks02:09
James147kevin_: I think kubuntu-desktop comse with some extra apps (not part of kde but kde related) as well as ubuntu customised settings02:10
kevin_Out of curiosity, what's the difference between aptitude and apt-get? I've always used the latter, I know they are essentially the same.02:11
James147kevin_: not much anymore, aptitude use to handel packages installed by dependencys but now apt-get is just as good i think, i tend to use aptitude as I like it search function better and it has a console gui when you just run "sudo aptitude"02:14
Kinlecheenyhow to kde switch gnome login start menu applications show up ??02:17

kevin_ok I'm back I install the kubuntu desktop and reatarted my computer, but as it tries to load into KDE it kicks me out back to the login screen. Any ideas about what that would mean?02:28
kevin_Obviously KDE doesn't like me, I just don't know why.02:30
James147kevin_: try going to a virtual console, stopping gdm (or kdm which ever your useing) and running startkde02:30
kevin_how would i go about doing that?02:31
James147kevin_: to swirch to virtual console hit "Alt+Ctrl+F1" (or F2-F6) and "Alt+Ctrl+F7" to get back (can sometimes be a higher value then F7)02:33
James147kevin_: to stop gdm or kdm type "sudo service gdm stop" and to start it again "sudo service gdm start" (or restart)02:34
James147kevin_: after you stop it run "startkde"02:34
kevin_It's didn't work, i stopped gnome, and when I ran the startkde command it returned with: display is not set or cannot connect to the x server.02:43

mahmoudas i say its my first tracker and im the administrator so im the only seedr for now . should i open port in my router to seed well for my leechers ?20:06
James147[Relic]: If your useing teh nvidia propraity driver "nvidia-xconfig" and "nvidia-settings" (run as root) can help recreate your xorg.conf file20:07
arch0njw[Relic]: that sounds like you need to run the x reconfig.  I need to look that up.20:07
arch0njw[Relic]: or what James147 said :)20:08
[Relic]there is no nvidia-xconfig20:09
arch0njwmahmoud: So after all that... I am hoping someone else knows more about torrent clients.  My -guess- would be that you would need to open the port on your router -- that is the only way "outsiders" can get to what you are sharing.20:09
[Relic]or maybe it just errors out20:09

arch0njwBluesKaj: why do I want to install the 190 driver?20:15
arch0njwphoenix_: Hrm... odd.  Not sure what is going on then.20:15
arch0njw[Relic]: if you don't have a backup of your xorg.conf you can restore, the only other thing I can think of trying is running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".  That has bailed me out of a few mistakes when I didn't backup the xorg.conf first.20:16

PhoenixzQuestion.. My dad is using Kubuntu 9.10.. He has a canon printer, which as first was automatically recognized, no problem at all, all worked fine (minus scanning, but thats another subject).. Then suddenly the priunter just didnt print anymore. Nothing worked, so I decided to delete the printer and have KDE automatically add it again..21:57
Phoenixzproblem is, KDE is not recognizing the printer whatsoever21:57
James147new_bember: System settings -> Advances (tab) -> Power Managment -> Edit Profiles -> (profile you want to edit probally preformance) -> CPU and system21:57
PhoenixzWhen I try to add it, all I have is a button "add network printer" and "add new printer class"..21:57
PhoenixzIts a USB printer, NOT a network printer..21:58
PhoenixzI tried "add network printer" where I have lots of options, but no USB printer.. plus I have to specify lots of stuff manually thta I don't know..21:58

rmrfslashhow do you download the source to patch it23:44
Typos_Kingrmrfslash:      I think the patches and stuff will be in the 'backports' packages, but I'd not bother23:45
Typos_Kingrmrfslash:      not to mention gnome's nm UI is much simpler23:45
Vroomfondlesp1d3r: ubottu is a bot :) Just a computer program which does our bidding23:45
Vroomfondlewe are its masters, mwahahah23:45
sp1d3rooops... lol23:45
DarkwingDuckTypos_King: we are testing a new NM plasmoid that is actually quite simple to use23:46
Typos_Kingm....mmm23:46
Typos_King:)23:46
DarkwingDuckOh yeah, Not sure if it will make the 10.04 cut or not yet...23:47
sp1d3ri have a question.. worth an ask.. I have a  ubuntu box with two Hdds, the first (HDA) has been partitioned into two partitions.. the first partition holds ubuntu and the second is just songs and stuff, I was wondering if the second partiion and the second drive could be made to look like one big drive23:48
James147sp1d3r: not easily if it is at all possible23:50
sp1d3rfigured.. thanks though James14723:50
James147sp1d3r: one thing you can do it mount the one inside the other23:50
DarkwingDucksp1d3r: do you have an external HDD or, enough room on the first partition to hold the information on the second one23:51
sp1d3ri do have an external hard drive, but the two drives I am talking about are both internal23:52
Vroomfondlesp1d3r: if you were starting from scratch you could use LVM to do it, but as there's already data on it then you might find it tricky23:52
avihaysp1d3r: It's possible. look for software raid on linux23:52
rmrfslash_I just installed the plasma-widget-network-manager and I cannot even find the sucker in the Add Widgets list. Anyone?23:52
Typos_Kingsp1d3r:   yes it can be done.... move over your music content to an external storage, delete that partition, resize the other take all free space, then dump your music back in :)23:52
sp1d3rcool.. thanks avihay23:52
sp1d3rbut Typos_King they are two separate physical drives23:52
Typos_Kingsp1d3r:    .. yes.... is called a 'Raid array'.... if you wish, you can check in google23:53
sp1d3rTypos_King: thanks, I will check it out right away23:53
Typos_Kingwell.... raid or clustering I think, raid is a bit different23:54
sp1d3ri wanna do a JBOD .. well kinda23:54
avihayand like Vroomfondle, you'll probably need to reformat the partitions in the process23:54
sp1d3rVroomfondle: i could get the data out of there,.,, its not important data23:55
Vroomfondlesp1d3r: look into LVM or Linux Software RAID23:55
sp1d3rwill do thanks Vroomfondle23:56
