[00:10] YAY! Member! [00:10] DarkwingDuck, ubuntu member? [00:10] Yes [00:11] Well, via Kubuntu but yes. I was just voted as a Kubuntu/Ubuntu member [00:11] DarkwingDuck, congratulations [00:11] Thanks [00:12] congrats DarkwingDuck === mohi_away is now known as mohi1 [02:36] hello there. Having some issues with booting windows 7 along with Ubuntu. It's loading grub just fine, and Ubuntu loads, but when I choose the Windows 7 option, the loading splash for windows shows, then suddenly reboots. [02:38] It seems to be specific to Ubuntu's grub. I had tried 9.10 and had the issue continuously, so I installed fedora and no problems. Now I've installed 10.04, and it worked at first, but now suddenly I'm back to windows rebooting on startup. [02:39] tried repairing windows boot with bootrec /fixboot, to no result [02:39] obviously don't want to fixmbr [02:44] nomadhacker, you done anything in the boot menu? i mean grub file(grub.cfg)?? [02:44] I had made windows the default with 5 second timeout. It had been working until just today. [02:46] you have the backup of your grub.cfg?? [02:46] nope. [02:47] It had been working for the last week or so since I installed 10.04 with windows as the default. === mohi1 is now known as mohi_away [03:09] Thanks to mohi! Just rebooted into Windows. === steelsteve is now known as Steelsteve_Away === Steelsteve_Away is now known as Steelsteve [05:11] hello everyone [05:12] Greetings [06:49] hi [06:52] after learning some basics on linux, like getting around the os and learning some basic commands, what topic would you suggest I look into next [06:53] i followed some tutorials, but they started getting into networks and servers, which i know nothing about. i thought i should put that on hold for a while [07:33] nhandler, is there a channel mode +u ? [08:39] Bodsda, ping [09:53] lukjad86: I went to the shop and it'll cost me 7 euro to install the software :)))) [10:04] lukjad86: I went to the shop and it'll cost me 7 euro to install the software for the router:)))) [10:14] lukjad86: hey, I am verry happy!!!!!!:))))))))) [10:14] st4aluck, :)))))))))))))))))))) [10:15] pedro3005: Yeah, I have to pay only 7 euro and my router will work again [10:16] st4aluck, that is good [10:17] pedro3005: Idon't know if it is possible to pre-install the software on the router by myselfe!?!? [10:18] st4aluck, neither do I [10:20] pedro3005: the only access to it is trough firefox, but if the build in DNS is fucked you can't access it [10:23] pedro3005: my sister gave it to me. She said she bought new because this doesn't work.:::))) It's 77 euro:) [10:25] st4aluck, well, good luck :D [10:25] pedro3005: still don't know what to do with this? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9039341#post9039341 [10:37] pedro3005: Can you comment something about http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9039341#post9039341 [10:38] st4aluck, hm, don't know much [10:38] sorry D: [10:42] pedro3005: Man, I am so desperate!!! May be I have to go back to 8.04 because of this problem [10:42] st4aluck, ask ibuclaw, he's the man! [10:45] pedro3005: does he stays in thise chat? [10:45] ibuclaw: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9039341#post9039341 [11:01] st4aluck, what's the specs? [11:03] ibuclaw: what do you mean? [11:03] motherboard, manufacturer. :) [11:03] or simply the desktop/laptop name [11:04] oh, wait, just read your post [11:04] Thoshiba A205-4567S [11:04] st4aluck, does it boot / work properly if you boot from Battery? [11:05] that is *not* connected to AC [11:05] ibuclaw: it work properly only on 8.04 [11:06] I said that I made test with live CD of Knoppix and Hardy [11:07] ibuclaw: On Knoppix loads and freezes but Hardy no prb [11:10] mkay [11:12] st4aluck, are you on the affected system now? [11:15] ibuclaw: yes, but I can change to another hard drive [11:15] ibuclaw: ....and install on it what ever you tell me [11:16] st4aluck, nah, just need to test 2 things [11:16] ok [11:16] if you open a terminal :) [11:16] firstly, fake that you are switching to battery. [11:17] sudo acpi_fakekey 236 [11:17] st4aluck, if all is fine afterwards, then test powersave. [11:17] wait [11:17] sudo pm-powersave true [11:18] if your system is still running, can mostly rule out acpi. [11:20] ibuclaw: shall I turn on battery now? [11:21] st4aluck, nah, those tests were just to see if it's a userspace issue. (the interface above the kernel). [11:22] ibuclaw: so? [11:23] ibuclaw: it's not [11:23] st4aluck, open up grub configuration and add "noacpi" as an option. [11:24] gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub [11:24] does it mean it the kernel issue as I tought [11:24] st4aluck, a regression, probably, yes. [11:24] in that file, you should see a "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" line. [11:24] ibuclaw: done [11:25] hello, i have downloaded ubuntu desktop dvd, and i have already installed Ubuntu with english. may i know how to install other language support through DVD? [11:25] I made thise before [11:25] =) [11:25] sudo update-grub [11:25] it's already made to show the boot loader [11:26] then reboot, login, and *then* try removing the AC power cable [11:26] kk :) [11:26] ok [11:26] bye [11:28] allencch, if you are connected to the net, you can get language-support packages through the repository [11:28] is there anyway to install offline, such as using DVD? [11:29] allencch, hmm, what's on the DVD contents? [11:29] the DVD iso downloaded from ubuntu website [11:33] allencch, hmm, maybe I'm blind, but I wasn't aware of a DVD available for download from the site (nor was I aware of one). [11:33] http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#dvd [11:34] ibuclaw: it freezes at the moment I have to load into my account [11:34] ibuclaw, it is linked to other server [11:35] http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/release/ [11:35] :) [11:35] ibuclaw: it freezes at the moment I have to load into my account [11:38] ibuclaw: ha, new update kernel on Lucid [11:40] st4aluck, ? :) [11:40] ibuclaw: new 32-28 [11:40] 32-18 [11:42] ibuclaw: I tried to boot on battery but it freezes at the moment I had to load into my account!?!? [11:43] ibuclaw: there is a new kernel update to 32-18 it was 32-17 [11:43] oic [11:43] allencch, if you insert the DVD and browse it's contents, what do you see? [11:44] the DVD is just similar to the CD version, only the squash fs is about 1.2 G [11:47] I was more interested in if there is a "pool" directory [11:47] if so, check that under "l" or "la" [11:49] ibuclaw, pool contains "main" and "restricted" [11:50] allencch, check under main [11:50] inside main got "l", and in "l" got a lot of "language-pack*" [11:50] allencch, there you go then =) [11:51] st4aluck, if you can figure out which was the last working kernel, check the change, try raising a bug report with your findings. [11:51] ibuclaw, then how do i install? i want to install chinese language and scim input. is it using the "deb" files? [11:52] ibuclaw: How it has to be? GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" [11:52] st4aluck, that is the default, yes [11:52] oh, noacpi? [11:52] GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noacpi" [11:52] like that? [11:53] well, it doesn't matter on the order [11:53] so long as it is within the quotes [11:53] after saving, run: [11:53] sudo update-grub [11:53] ok [11:53] to generate a new grub.cfg file for boot [11:54] ibuclaw, okay, i know the solution, it is using dpkg [11:55] ibuclaw, thanks for your help. FYI, the DVD image doesn't have the language I want. hahaha. [11:55] allencch, gdebi should be installed =) [11:55] that allows you to double click on the debs to install [11:56] ibuclaw: still downlading the updates:( [11:56] allencch, being connected to the net is so much easier though when installing packages. [11:57] then I will reboot [11:57] but internet connection is not very fast and not always available in my area. [11:57] because of the ... fragmented way they are maintained. [11:58] st4aluck Hey, that's great! [11:59] lukjad86: haha, I am happy with the router...after 2-3 hours I'll have it back [12:00] Good for you! [12:00] 77 euro, uh!!! [12:01] I can connect 64 computers with it [12:02] lukjad86: still trying to fix the battery problem [12:02] st4aluck, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/447104 [12:02] broken wireless drivers strikes again. [12:03] st4aluck, another test is to disable network manager from autostarting =) [12:04] thanks, bye [12:05] ibuclaw: Are you talking about the battery mode [12:06] ibuclaw: I did read it yet [12:06] ibuclaw: I didn't read it yet [12:07] how to disable the network manager and do you think it'll help [12:08] st4aluck, I *think* it is in System->Preferences->Startup Apps [12:09] ibuclaw: Sorry I'll be back in few minutes..... have to kill the snake:))) [12:09] ; [12:16] wow [12:22] ibuclaw: do you mean startup services? [12:28] st4aluck, is Network Manager listed ? [12:29] ibuclaw: no but there is a powerdevil deamon [12:29] never heard of it. :) [12:30] ibuclaw: did you read the article? [12:31] ibuclaw: the bug is the same [12:32] ibuclaw: log-in screen. [12:32] after logging in, I HAVE TO KILL THE NM-APPLET BEFORE IT'S CONNECTED. [12:32] this will make my laptop run stable on battery power, pulling out the adapter when the system is booted still ends up with a frozen PC [12:33] st4aluck, preventing nm-applet from starting full stop will prevent you having to do that. [12:33] ibuclaw: that was the last comment [12:34] ibuclaw: now there is a new kernel... let me reboot to see,uh? [12:34] just upgradet [12:35] st4aluck, sure, go ahead [12:35] bye [12:36] ibuclaw Is there a way to sync my computer's time with a server? It seems to be off by several minutes [12:45] ibuclaw: it got frozen while loading the kernel [12:49] oh joy :) [12:49] does the same happen when starting recovery mode -> selecting resume? [12:51] also, a pastebin of /var/log/messages may prove useful insight [12:56] ibuclaw: did you see that?..... edit: 12-02-10 the LINUX-2.6.31-18-kernell solves the problem on my pc [12:57] ibuclaw: Can I run LINUX-2.6.31-18-kernell on Lucid? [12:57] ibuclaw: that guy says it solved the problem [13:13] ibuclaw: Can I run LINUX-2.6.31-18-kernell on Lucid? The guy sais it fixed the problem with the battery. ( edit: 12-02-10 the LINUX-2.6.31-18-kernell solves the problem on my pc) [13:14] st4aluck, can't see why not. [13:15] can you pls help me from where to download it? [21:00] The archive manager says they're not zip files, so I tried 7zip and that isn't working either :/ [21:03] lorn_: What are the downloads? [21:05] Ha's anyone a favourite C++ compiler and IDE ( Netbeans/Code::Blocks) for Lucid [21:06] fine_line, well.. I always use g++ as a compiler [21:07] is that better than Borland ? [21:07] Sorry had a phone call [21:08] the downloads are diablo 2 from battle.net installers [21:09] Error: /home/lorn/Desktop/Downloader_Diablo2_enUS.exe: Can not open file as archive [21:10] quit [21:10] lorn_: You will not be able to run that in Ubuntu. It might work with wine, but I'm not sure [21:10] I see [21:11] but normal zip files should just work then, eh? [21:11] ill try it [21:13] Zip files are just an archive. You will be able to extract them in Ubuntu, but you might not be able to run what is actually inside them [21:19] awesome, wine is working for the unzip [21:20] Thanks guys, I was convinced I had somehow saved the archives wrong or something :) [21:20] lorn_: diablo 2 works just fine under wine [21:20] Uh, you don't need wine to unzip a .zip file. [21:27] I needed it to unzip the diablo 2 installer [21:29] file share [21:29] mt [21:30] lorn_: ubuntu handles archives well, if installer was an exe self-extracting archive it is windows stuff so you need wine or windows to run it [21:30] Yessir I understand that now, didn't realize it was a windows compatability thing [21:31] lorn_: yop srry :) [21:31] What would be the best way to set up quick file sharing from computers on the same router [21:31] My brother is still running windows, not sure if that matters [21:32] Eh, brothers and their windows [21:32] I know how you feel!
