benomaticstrange, strange problem.  prolly not myth, but can't be sure:  my HD and my (text) login screen flash on and off at the same rate., over and over.  making the screen an invitation to a seizure.  and meaning my HD is going far crazier than I would expect (no recording, tv, etc. at all right now)  any suggestions on where to start diagnosis?01:10
benomaticalso note -- if i turn on num lock, it blinks same pattern as well.  funky hardware?01:11
puffHm, I'm not getting a dhcp response.  I've tried rebooting.  I plugged the same cable into my laptop, get a response no problem.02:23
puffBut not on the mythbox.02:23
guyforgethi, i'm having trouble getting a separate frontend to connect to my backend. i have a laptop running mythbuntu from a usb drive and when i put in my info and click test connection, I get a fail result. I can go to firefox though and type in the backend's ip address with port 6544 and see the status page.. i'm using the password from my backends mysql.txt file, and nothing is showing up in the mythbackend.log file fr03:34
guyforgetom this03:34
guyforgetfound the answer.. i need to comment out bind = from the my.conf mysql file04:25
hot_wheelzhi guys09:37
hot_wheelzcan we addin option to use IceTV as a source for guide data in the same way it gives you an option to use Schedules Direct if you are based in the US please....or the record i DO NOT work for IceTV I just think it would be good to include it as an option so users can select it from the drop dowm box then enter their user\pass as they would with Shedules Direct and they're done09:39

ScumBagWell using & asking questions on IRC , very much a big n00b.13:25
ScumBagsorry about that vpn dropped out13:38
pmcenerymrand: you around?14:42
pmcenerylol. Ok. Just wanted to see if you'd noticed the backtraces have come back...14:45
pmceneryThey look very Qt'ishly orientated14:46
mrandYep.  Doesn't look like our retracer does us any good still.  -dbg package is still the best tool we have for that.... thanks for running it.  I attached us to the upstream ticket, so we'll know when they fix it.14:46
mrandEverything does.  Mythtv makes uses of every QT function they can.14:46
pmceneryOk. Am I the only one who's seing this?14:47
mrandThere was an exisiting bug open upstream, so certainly not.  I haven't had a chance to try it myself - my test machine is kinda messed up, and my frontend doesn't have a DVD drive.14:47
pmceneryIt could be a 0.23 thing. When I was using minimyth, I'm sure it worked, but that was quite a while back14:49
pmcenerymrand: should I try the could_fix... patch?15:02
mrandpmcenery: it would be awesome if you could.   We have "Patching and building from source" in http://www.mythbuntu.org/wiki/recipes, but I can't guarantee every step is up-to-date.  Also, mythtv and mythtvplugins are probably trunk, so I'd back up your database first (although it is possible the schema hasn't changed on trunk yet, so you might be ok).   Or were you thinking of downloading mythtv from upstream source and building?15:08
pmcenerymrand: I'm testing against the latest source package on the build server. apt-get source, add the patch and dpkg-buildpackage15:25
pmceneryI maintain two debian packages... so I should be ok with it ;)15:25
pmceneryIts building now....15:26
mrandpmcenery: if you can help improve that recipies page, I'd love to.15:28
pmcenerymrand: I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment, but later in the year, I can get more involved.15:31
pmceneryI've been running mythtv since late 2006, so I've been round the block with it a bit.15:32
mrandYeah, I could tell.15:32
pmceneryI noticed there might be a missing build-dep on the 0.23 mythtv source package.15:34
mrandpmcenery: really?15:34
pmceneryI've done an apt-get build-dep mythtv, and then built against it, and I get this...15:34
mrandpmcenery: bummer.  Would you like to open a ticket on it, or shall I? :-)15:40
pmceneryI need some karma...15:42
mrandYeah, I don't.  go for it!15:42
pmceneryagainst "mythtv"15:42
mrandI believe so.  It can be easily moved if not.15:43
pmceneryI want to try using reportbug...15:43
mrandpmcenery: Hadn't heard of reportbug... have to give it a try.  ubuntu-bug collects system info and throws it in the report for you... does reportbug also?15:45
pmceneryMmm. just seen its not supporting the Ubuntu BTS at the moment. Its a Debian thing15:46
pmceneryYou can report bugs at the command line, and it mails the BTS for you15:47
mrandpmcenery: On launchpad, you can certainly comment on bugs and change their status via email -  I assume you can report them that way as well.  Bug they have to be pgp signed.  I haven't looked/tried, actually.15:49
pmceneryI'm just trying to find the actual page where you report a bug on launchpad. Its not easy!15:51
pmceneryGreat if apport launches it for you...15:51
mrandpmcenery: ubuntu-bug mythtv will launch a browser and take you there.15:52
pmceneryAh. I'm working on it remotely... so I had to manually do it. I've found it now though15:53
mrandYeah, I'm no big fan of the launchpad UI.15:54
pmcenerymrand: Its filed as bug #55176916:00
ZinnBug 551769 in mythtv (Ubuntu) "Missing build dependency on mythtv source package" [Undecided, New] http://www.launchpad.net/bugs/55176916:00
pmceneryDo you know what is missing offhand so I can kick off my build?16:01
mrandpmcenery: as far as I know, those are standard things installed via QT4...16:05
mrandOr should be.16:05
mrandSo that's what I'd check first.16:05
mrandGoogling appears to say that you're missing the qt header files.  Maybe supposed to be included in a -dev package for qt?16:06
mdisienookay, heres  my problem. I am running ubuntu karmic on my htpc and am trying to push it up to my vizio vx37l at 1920x1080. What I am running into is the edges of my screen are cut off no matter the resolution. I am using a geforce 7900gt with dual dualink dvi ports, on one of those ports i have a dvi-d single link cable going from the htpc to dvi>hdmi adapter for the tv. My first though was the pc, but it works beautifully wi16:30
mdisienoth rgb-vga, so I'm lost, any ideas?16:30
pmcenerymrand: back. I see. I've uninstalled all the qt3 packages now16:31
pmceneryretrying build16:31
pmceneryI do think a build-conflicts would be good16:31
pmcenerymdisieno: Is that just X which runs over the edges? Or mythtv?16:47
pmceneryWhich version of the nvidia driver have you got?16:48
mdisienopmcenery, x16:48
pmceneryHave you tried the nvidia driver team's latest beta PPA package to see if its any better16:48
mdisienopmcenery, no i havent, is the ppa on their site?16:49
rhpot1991mdisieno: your original message cut off16:51
pmcenerymdisieno: Is that the VDPAU one that you have installed?16:51
rhpot1991at "worked beatifully wi"16:51
mdisienorhpot1991, ah, with rgb/vga16:51
rhpot1991mdisieno: sounds like overscan, which is normal.  You can normally tell a TV not to do that in your menu, or hook it up over VGA or a similar PC input to stop that16:51
mdisienopmcenery, sorry,vdpau?16:52
rhpot1991personally I like having a little overscan, so you don't see the garbage outside of the video, your tv will normally do this with a cable signal16:52
pmcenerymdisieno: If you list the packages installed : dpkg -l |grep nvidia16:52
pmceneryThe vdpau version (on-chip accelerated decoding of x264, etc) will be listed as...16:53
pmceneryAh. They may all include that feature now.... the package listed will include nvidia-185-libvdpau16:54
mdisienopmcenery, yes, i have it mdisieno@media-center:~$ dpkg -l |grep nvidia16:54

Zinn[launchpad.net] Nvidia Vdpau Team PPA : “Nvidia Vdpau Team” team17:01
pmceneryNot sure its a driver issue though. How much overscan are we talking about?17:02
mdisienolike half an inch on all 4 sides17:03
mdisienoenough to cut off my tool bar17:03
pmceneryI cant remember if nvidia-settings has anything useful that you can fiddle with. I dont think so though17:06
pmceneryHave you got any other HDMI devices that you can test with. I'm assuming you dont see this with any set top boxes?17:07
rhpot1991thats normal for overscan17:07
rhpot1991your tv does that with other devices as well, you just aren't used to seeing them without overscan17:08
pmceneryI've got the cheapest TV you can buy - Hanspree xv 100 32" - with crayon all over it ;)17:08
pmceneryrhpot1991: I'm guessing you just need to make sure there is no cropping of the edges configured in mythtv, if there are no TV settings to reduce overscan...17:10
mdisienopmcenery, well the issue is inherent in x as well, thus confusion17:10
pmcenerymdisieno: Are there any overscan settings on the TV you can see in the menu's?17:11
pmceneryIt could be handling overscan differently on the VGA to the HDMI port...17:12
rhpot1991well there are some things you can do to reduce it, such as mess with the nvidia settings, but yes the proper way to deal with it is with the tv itself17:12
rhpot1991google for your tv and how to deal with it17:13
rhpot1991some let you only adjust a single hdmi port17:13
pmcenerymdisieno: have you seen this: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t46201.html17:14
Zinn[forums.nvidia.com] NVIDIA Forums > NVIDIA Linux Overscan on HDTV17:14
mdisienopmcenery, no there isnt ,and im having trouble adding that ppa to my reps, i cp it right over and still have the same issue17:14
mdisienopmcenery, no i havent17:15
pmceneryNot sure it will help you seeing as there dont appear to be any settings for overscan on the TV17:16
dewmanhello everyone...17:16
pmceneryI've found some references to people trying modelines, but I can tell you that my attepts to fiddle with them have mostly ended in misery17:17
mdisienopmcenery, is there a reason i cant add that ppa to my reps, it wouldnt allow the add button to be clickable17:17
pmceneryUsually because the TV does whatever it wants no matter what you try and tell it17:17
pmceneryDid you add "ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa", and it wont let you click Add?17:21
mdisienopmcenery, yes, i found out why ,accidently hit /17:22
pmcenerycan also do sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa17:23
pmceneryNot entirely sure its going to help, but you can say you've tried the latest bleeding edge drivers...17:23
mdisienopmcenery, i got it in, installing 195 right now17:24
mdisienopmcenery, E: /var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-glx-195_195.36.15-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa2_amd64.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib32/libvdpau_nvidia.so', which is also in package nvidia-185-libvdpau 0 :(17:26
pmceneryMmm, that is a bit of a problem.17:30
pmceneryYou may need to force overwrite it17:30
mdisienopmcenery, fixed, removed 185 libdvpau first, then installed 195 over ,brb reboot17:30
pmceneryif it all goespear shaped, uninstall them and reinstall the old one17:30
pmcenery Ok17:31
pmceneryany luck?17:35
mdisienopmcenery, same issue ,but i havent tried anything new config wise17:36
mdisienopmcenery, im getting sick of nvidia-settings though ,it wont save to my xorg.conf17:36
pmceneryOk. You may need to look at modelines, but I've never had any real success17:36
mdisienosays failed to parse existing x config file /etc/x11/xorg.conf17:37
pmceneryYes. There is no xorg.conf anymore. Its mostly dynamically configured, but it will accept a config file17:37
mdisienopmcenery, where is that at if i may ask17:37
mdisienopmcenery,  okay ill cp my xorg.conf.new to xorg.conf17:38
pmcenery/etc/X11/xorg.conf is the original location for it.17:38
mdisienoam im looking for metamode?17:38
pmceneryI'm not sure whats in the nvidia settings. I dont think modelines are in there. they are usually added manually, and its a right pain in the arse17:39
Zinnpmcenery: Please watch your language.17:39
mdisienopmcenery, how shall i do that then?17:40
pmceneryYou may want to start googling for your TV make and model and "modeline"17:41
pmceneryThey usually go in the Monitor section of the xorg.conf file.17:41
mdisienopmcenery, found, but for the lower res. im looking for my 1080i which the tv is at now17:42

pmcenery What resolution is it coming up with now?17:46
mdisienopmcenery, even though its a lower res? right now 1080i via switching to 1920x1080 in nvidia settings17:46
pmceneryWell... start with that and see if the overscan is fixed17:47
pmceneryor underscan as you may appear to need17:47
pmceneryYou can change resolution later if this appears to be heading in the right direction.17:47
mdisienopmcenery, okay,   also i came from gentoo to ubuntu, how can i restart x? same as gentoo /etc/init.d/xdm restart?17:48
pmceneryI've gotta run shortly...17:48

rhpot1991pmcenery: is that your tv the vizio vx37l?18:09
camelreefgood evening from Scotland!19:20
pmceneryrhpot1991: Nope, that was mdisieno's19:24
pmcenerymrand: Winner. DVD is working with that patch19:27
camelreefany report about tv_grab_uk_rt and libdate-manip-perl lately?19:29
pmcenerycamelreef: I'm using the version in my PPA19:30
pmcenerycamelreef: Are you on lucid?19:30
camelreefXMLTV requires a Date::Manip timezone of +0000 to work properly.19:30
camelreefCurrent Date::Manip timezone is 1.19:30
camelreefthat's what I am getting19:30
pmceneryOn karmic I used my ppa package, and I updaetd on the weekend. Let just see what I did. I'm sure I installed my PPA package of it and it works.19:31
camelreefoh, Mr. pmcenery from the iPhone packages! Respect, sir!19:32

camelreefthis is my command line:19:33
camelreef/usr/bin/tv_grab_uk_rt --config-file /home/mythfront/.mythtv/tv5europe_uk_rt.conf19:33
pmceneryYep. try the packages from the PPA. Although... I think I had to install a different version of libdate-manip-perl19:34
pmceneryI have this installed19:34
pmceneryii  libdate-manip-perl                         6.05-1                                          module for manipulating dates19:34
pmceneryalthough, it may not be working again. I'm sure I installed the karmic libdate-manip-perl package to get it to work.19:35
camelreef  Installed: 6.05-119:35
pmcenerySorry I sound vague, but I've lost track of it a bit.19:35
camelreefDebian had a similar problem19:35

pmceneryBtw. I've found a sponsor for ipheth and it should be going in any day now to Debian. I'll then file the sync request for it to be included in lucid...19:36
pmcenerybrb... will check on that xmltv thing now. I think mine's broke again19:37
pmcenerycamelreef: I install this http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libdate-manip-perl and my PPA version of xmltv, and its working19:45
Zinn[packages.debian.org] Debian -- Details of package libdate-manip-perl in lenny19:45

camelreefpmcenery, maybe it's something that needs to go into lucid19:51
pmcenerycamelreef: Something needs fixing, but I just havent seriously looked at it yet. I'll try looking at it tomorrow some time.19:54
pmceneryDo we have a LP bug for it?19:54
camelreefdon;t know19:54
pmceneryI'll speak to mrand about it. Its quite a fundamental problem that19:55
camelreeflet me see if the xmltv package from the Debian bug works19:55
camelreefpmcenery, the xmltv in Debian appears to do it on lucid20:01
camelreefon its own20:04
camelreefwithout changing  libdate-manip-perl20:05
mrandpmcenery: skamithi was worried in that upstream bug about the patch breaking DVD mounting.  Any ill effects (either inside or outside mythtv)?  If not, I'll post a followup there that you've verified the patch.20:22
mrandre: xmltv, you all talking about Bug 544522?20:22
