matmatmathey01:43
matmatmatafter upgrading to lucid my computer boots into console01:43
matmatmatwhat can i do to fix that?01:43
matmatmatshould i install gdm?01:43
superm1how'd you install lucid?01:44
matmatmatedit the sources.list01:45
matmatmatchanged everything to lucid01:45
superm1you should never upgrade like that01:46
matmatmatreally?01:46
superm1update manager needs to be able to handle things that changed that couldn't be represented in packaging01:46
matmatmatwhy not.. and how instead01:46
superm1http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading01:47
Zinn[www.ubuntu.com] Upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 | Ubuntu01:47
superm1that's the proper way to upgrade01:47
superm1now for going to lucid, it's still in development, so you just need to add a '-d' argument to show development releases01:47
matmatmataside from the x thing it works surprisingly well tho ,)01:47
superm1you're lucky that it went "smoothly" :)01:48
superm1so now that you're broke, go and check if mythbuntu-desktop is still installed01:48
superm1if it's not, you should be able to install it, and it will get the system to life01:48
matmatmatshould install from the scratch now?01:48
matmatmatok, will go check01:49
superm1well it's up to you, you can try to recover from how the system is now.  if that works, spectacular.  if not, go grab the daily image for 10.04 and install from scratch01:49
superm1!daily01:49
Zinnzsync http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/daily-live/current/lucid-desktop-i386.iso.zsync  <+|+>   zsync http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/daily-live/current/lucid-desktop-amd64.iso.zsync01:49
superm1either of those commands will get you the current daily image01:49
matmatmatwell01:53
matmatmatnow it IS broken01:53
matmatmatmythbuntu-desktop and gdm werent installed, got both, now it boots into a screwed x01:54
superm1nvidia-current might be missing if you used nvidia01:55
matmatmatits not that screwed01:55
matmatmatits more a screwed xfce01:55
superm1mythbuntu-default-settings missing?01:55
matmatmatim getting a sort of terminal window in the left upper corner01:55
matmatmati think the screen res is ok01:56
matmatmatlooks pretty high when i look at the small font01:56
superm1so is it logging into the failsafe-x terminal session maybe?01:56
superm1type exit, and see if it kicks you to a login scren01:56
superm1if so, there should be a selector at the bottom to pick different sessions01:56
matmatmatcant type anything in there01:57
superm1you have to bring the mouse over the terminal part maybe?01:57
superm1so it can focus01:57
matmatmatyeah01:58
matmatmatyoure right01:58
matmatmatgot gdm now01:58
matmatmatso err01:59
matmatmatcan i do anything about that?02:00
matmatmati cannot pick other sessions02:02
matmatmatit lets me only pick a user02:02
matmatmatany idea what to do now superm1?02:05
matmatmatand actually02:06
matmatmati dont have a cd drive02:06
dewmandiskless install! woohoo! =)02:07
matmatmati would really like to avoid that second option02:07
matmatmatya.. i know its possible02:07
matmatmatbut that includes some work02:08
dewmanits nix..... There is always work..... =)02:08
superm1matmatmat, ooh fun. umm.02:09
superm1if mythbuntu-desktop is installed at that point, and mythbuntu-default-settings, i dunno02:09
dewmanmatmatmat, here you got..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4fzInlyYQo02:12
Zinn[www.youtube.com] YouTube - Running rm -rf / on Linux02:12
dewmanhehehe02:12
matmatmati will add that to the list of things to do before i jump off a bridge02:15
matmatmatanyways, installing from the scratch does have other disadvantages02:16
superm1i've actually (accidentally) done that myself before02:17
superm1a shell script that was supposed to clean up something with $PREFIX/02:17
superm1well due to a bug in filling out the variables in the script, $PREFIX wasn't getting defined02:18
superm1and of course an undefined variable in shell equates to an empty string02:18
dewmanI always wondered what would happen. Its nice to know that there are people out there willing to show the rest of the world..02:19
matmatmati wonder if you can actually screenrecord that02:19
dewmanI think it was being done in a vm02:20
matmatmatya02:20
matmatmatprolly02:20
dewmanthere is no way...02:20
dewmansome of the comments were pretty funny....02:20
matmatmatif i get a daily build, is a way to upgrade it to the next daily build without hassle?02:24
matmatmatlike svn checkout02:24
matmatmatjust for the binary02:24
matmatmatok, there is apparently02:27
superm1matmatmat, zsync between images02:29
superm1or if it's installed, just use update-manager or apt-get to do it02:30
superm1it's only from lucid->lucid+1 etc that you can't just s/lucid/lucid+1/ sources.list02:30
matmatmatfrom karmic to lucid?02:31
superm1same thing02:31
superm1i'm just saying generically from major release to major release you need to use update manager02:31
superm1for binary isos, you can zsync02:31
superm1for upgrades within the release, use update manager or apt02:31
matmatmatzsync as in installing from scratch02:32
matmatmator what?02:32
superm1zsync downloads ISOs in a binary diff type format02:33
matmatmatwhy would i need an iso to update02:33
superm1<matmatmat> if i get a daily build, is a way to upgrade it to the next daily build without hassle?02:33
superm1that's how you update to a new "daily" build02:33
superm1otherwise, it's just regular upgrades like you normally would in ubuntu02:33
superm1with apt-get etc02:33
matmatmati'm just confused why a cd image (if i understand correctly) is used02:34
matmatmator is binary iso something different02:34
matmatmatobviously yes02:35
superm1cd image == iso image. that's just how we distribute our installer02:35
superm1zsync is a tool to do binary diff's of images02:35
superm1so you only need to download what changed from one cd image to another02:35
matmatmatyeah, i got that02:35
matmatmatbut if i have a daily build already02:36
matmatmatinstalled02:36
matmatmati need a "new" (zsynced) .iso to update to the next build?02:36
superm1no02:37
matmatmatoh02:37
matmatmatso i can obtain the daily builds with apt-get?02:37
superm1yesish02:38
matmatmatoh hehe02:38
superm1i mean the new daily builds are just snapshots of the archive with all the debs preinstalled02:38
matmatmatwell, lets assume i get the .iso of todays build02:39
matmatmathow exactly do i perform the update tomorrow to get the next daily build02:40
tgm4883apt-get update && apt-get upgrade02:40
superm1that or open up update-manager02:40
tgm4883well, maybe a dist-upgrade02:40
tgm4883or yea, do what superm1 says02:40
matmatmatyeah. ok02:40
matmatmatactually i'm not dumb. it just seems so.02:41
matmatmatand -- well, usually it wouldnt update to trunk versions i guess02:42
matmatmatbut if i get the trunk version in the first place, then it does?02:42
superm1we ship 0.23, not trunk right now02:42
superm1if you want trunk, you need to enable autobuilds and pick trunk02:42
matmatmatyeah... thats what im talking about02:43
superm1i wouldn't recommend getting trunk though02:43
superm1it's constantly in flux, whereas 0.23 is stabilizing02:43
matmatmati'm waiting for a ticket to be resolved that has been submitted 6h ago02:43
matmatmatyeah.. stabilizing, wise choice of words02:44
matmatmatso autobuilds was what i was lookin for all the time02:45
superm1yeah sounds like it :)02:47
matmatmatwho can i bribe to look at that ticket errm02:48
matmatmatits just one line of code..02:49
matmatmati guess if i get the sources and compile the modified version then everything will screwed next time i try to apt-get upgrade?02:53
superm1more than likely02:53
matmatmatgotta stick to bribing then02:54
matmatmatscratch04:59
mrandscratch is an awesome program05:00
matmatmatso is mythtv05:19
matmatmatworks like a charme now05:19
matmatmatexcept for that one thing05:20
mrandmatmatmat: was this it? http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/826905:34
Zinn[svn.mythtv.org] #8269 (Aspect ratio changes not detected while watching H.264 SDTV) – MythTV05:34
matmatmatyeh hehe05:36
matmatmati was about to bribe them but they told me it was solved to hours ago05:36
matmatmatshouldve checked more often05:36
mrandThat should be in tomorrow's auto-builds.05:37
mrand(as in tomorrow evening)05:37
superm1was it fixed on 0.23 or trunk though?05:39
matmatmat0.23 i think05:40
mrandyes05:40
mrandboth05:40
matmatmatit was broken on both at least05:40
matmatmat/is05:40
matmatmatmhhh iptv ran reallllly smooth, now my machine is running a buttload of upgrades .. hope it wont break anything05:41
matmatmati'm still fascinated by watching tv without a physical tuner05:42
mrandwhat iptv are you watching?  Using MNV?05:42
matmatmatmnwhat?05:43
matmatmati'm using the freebox tuner thing in mythtv05:43
matmatmatits dvb-ip05:43
matmatmatby my isp05:43
mrandah.05:44
mrandMythNetVision is what I was referring to.05:44
matmatmatoh.. nah05:44
matmatmatits real tv05:44
matmatmateven HD channels05:44
matmatmatat like 10mbit h26405:44
mrandbut it probably isn't available to anyone outside your isp's network.05:45
matmatmatyeah05:45
tgm4883what ISP?05:46
matmatmatwhich still makes it 500 times more mobile than a sattelite dish05:46
matmatmatgerman alice-dsl05:46
matmatmatanyways, after argueing with my landlord over broken cable ill be getting sattelite tv in a month.. and of course iptv is no match to that. but its a good alternative to dvb-c here05:48
matmatmatand ill have an additional tuner05:49
matmatmathm crap. dist upgrade is giving me hassle about the db05:51
matmatmatunknow mysql server host "localhost"05:52
matmatmatshould i try 127.0.0.1?05:53
mrandI'm off to bed, but it shouldn't matter.  Make sure sql is running.05:53
gbeeare the 0.22-fixes weekly builds still being updated?10:02
Davieygbee: not at the moment10:09
gbeeI backported a memory leak fix yesterday that would be worth having for those who choose to remain on 0.22 until the bugs have been worked out of 0.2310:11
Davieygbee: oh cool, i'll try and push a manual 0.22-fixes today10:20
gbeethanks10:22
jussi01do you guys have a devel chan?11:11
jussi01ahh found it :)11:12
superm1gbee, hmm doing 22 fixes weekly builds might not be easily done15:02
superm1Daviey, if you figured out how to, then great :)15:02
gbeeisn't that what you've been doing up to now?15:03
superm1well we have it set up to do two builds at most at a time15:03
superm1a "-fixes" and a "-trunk"15:04
superm1so when it comes time to open a new upstream fixes branch, it gets migrated over15:04
gbeeand you've migrated to the future 0.23 branch already?15:04
superm1yeah15:05
superm1so 0.23-fixes builds and 0.24-trunk are happening right now15:06
gbeenuts15:11
superm1well all the old 0.22-fixes builds are still published from before15:15
superm1it's not like we delete them, just weren't going to update15:16
superm1Daviey and i can discuss how to allow these to always be built if there are fixes to old branches15:16
gbeeyeah, just means that anyone wanting the backend mem leak fix need to upgrade to 0.23 before it's stabilised, which usually takes a few weeks15:18
superm1right15:18
Davieysuperm1: I was just going to do it manually, pulling in most recent autobuild from the PPA, bumping the revision and pushing again15:50
Daviey(ie, not using the autobuild scripts)15:50
Davieysuperm1: Can you see a problem there?15:51
superm1Daviey, well the -fixes packaging branch is significantly different15:53
superm1oh15:53
superm1i see what yo umean15:53
superm1yeah that's probably sufficient15:53
superm1OT: anyone want to play a quick game of wofie19:35
superm1 /j #wolfie19:35
Davieygbee: 0.22-fixes should be up to date now19:42
gbeeDaviey: much appreciated, thank you19:42
bjdyo, is there some issue where you can't modify playback profiles?19:59
bjdall the options seem greyed out and i can't select/change anything19:59
bjdah, upgrading to latest build fixed it =)20:04
Davieybjd: 0.22-fixes?20:06
bjdDaviey: yep20:28
Davieyok, great - bjd, that build is hot off the press ! :)20:30
bjd:)20:40
bjdjust really thinking aloud, but suppose you have a board with spdif headers, (labelled +5v, ground, spdif out) and i've got an nvidia card with hdmi out with has spdif in headers - in theory - should I be able to use the headers on teh board?20:42
bjdi can't figure if the headers are specific to asus or not20:43
javatexanwant to hear a funny story?  this morning my ubuntu based mythtv box did not want to boot.  It currently boots off of sda5 and sda6 is the swap.  error message was that it couldnt find UUID=xxxxx...  I then let it reboot and i went into edit on grub menu...I changed root=uuid=xxxx to root=/dev/sda5 and it works.  Once logged in, I went to /dev/disks/by-uuid and sure enough there is a entry for sda6 but not sda5....Is there a way to m20:55
javatexanoh, its 9.1020:55
javatexanoh, when I run update-grub now, it changed all the root=uuid to root=/dev/sda5 ...... go figure eh?20:56
javatexanapparently all this happend last night when I shutdown the computer...it all worked fine yesterday/last night20:57
javatexanany ideas?20:58
tgm4883javatexan, thats odd20:58
tgm4883#wolfie20:58
javatexani thought uuid was being used to help with removable drives and so forth, so i guess I should figure out how to get the UUID back for sda520:58
tgm4883@learn wolfie - Come play #wolfie20:58
tgm4883!wolfie20:59
ZinnCome play #wolfie20:59
tgm4883javatexan, yea UUID is used in case the drives switch locations20:59
superm1tgm4883, we can start bribing users.  if they play two rounds of wolfie we help them20:59
tgm4883superm1, great idea20:59
tgm4883!wolfie21:00
ZinnCome play 2 rounds of #wolfie and get assistance with your issue21:00
rhpot1991if they win 2 rounds of wolfie :)21:01
superm1well that's not really fair, because we would just kill them over an over21:01
superm1so javatexan come play two rounds of wolfie and tgm4883 will help you21:02
tgm4883wait..what?21:02
superm1;)21:03
rhpot1991ya I dunno whats up with that, UUID has been used for a while21:03
javatexanwhat is !wolfie?21:03
rhpot1991so long I can't remember the last time I saw something not use it21:03
superm1javatexan, /j #wolfie, you'll see21:03
javatexansounds like a virus21:04
javatexan;)21:04
superm1haha21:04
