[15:12] hello i am using ubuntu 9.1 karmic with ubuntu-studio-audio installed and am trying to get jack working ...What I want to do is transmit the sound from a windows 7 box to a ubuntu box since sound is not fully supported with version 5 of the rdp protocol (version 7 has full support) [15:13] can anyone help? [15:14] hey harry-houdini1 [15:14] SO [15:14] you have an ubuntubox [15:14] hi holstein [15:14] and a win7 box [15:14] yes [15:15] and you want what? [15:15] i want to stream the sound from the windows box to the ubuntu box [15:15] over the lan [15:15] OK [15:15] at what quality? [15:15] very good quality [15:15] i am watching training videos [15:15] its a 100MB ethernet [15:16] videos? [15:16] SO you want to stream the audio and video? [15:16] testout training videos....I have a remote desktop connection but sound isnt supported [15:16] i dont think jack is going to be the anser [15:16] answer* [15:17] so i figured i could use this as a stop gap measure [15:17] stream the audio separately [15:17] sure [15:17] but what will sync? [15:17] have you tried VLC [15:17] ? [15:17] I cant find any how too's on using vlc with testout..i dont think it will work [15:18] http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ [15:18] hmmm [15:19] why dont you just watch the vids on the ubuntu box? [15:19] cause of the overhead of running a virtual machine [15:19] i wanted to offload the work [15:20] it wont run with wine [15:20] SO ubuntu is virtulized? [15:20] its its own self contained program [15:20] and testout has a proprietary piece of software [15:20] no windows is virtualized on the ubuntu box but its too much overhead so i wanted to stream from another workstation [15:20] that plays the vid? [15:20] yes exactly [15:21] to train you about opensource sofware ;) [15:21] lol [15:21] anyways [15:21] no actually cisco [15:21] CCNP stuff [15:21] hmm [15:21] well, jack is not the answer [15:21] pretty sure [15:22] you get jack running on ubuntu [15:22] and that doesnt help you get anything into it really [15:22] not from windows [15:22] sad thing is if rdesktop supported version 7 of rdp it would work [15:22] well jack runs on windows as well [15:23] so your thinking netjack? [15:23] yes [15:23] isnt that part of jack2 [15:23] hmm [15:24] that would do it... [15:24] have you used jack before? [15:24] damn program is totally undocumented [15:24] even best case scenario for me [15:24] i had a little latency [15:24] no never used it cant get the deamons to start on either windows or linux get error #2 [15:24] and some xruns [15:25] to many xruns for me to feel like i could use netjack proffesionally [15:25] whats xruns cause [15:25] clicks [15:25] hmmm [15:25] pops [15:25] or drop-outs [15:25] OR crashing [15:25] that would be anoying [15:25] yup [15:25] PLUS [15:25] its challenging to get running [15:25] you aint kidding [15:25] and your not going to ever do anything else with it [15:26] if your not an audio guy [15:26] does vlc some how work with non compliant programs [15:26] how about a really long headphone extension cable? [15:26] hmmm..lol maybe thats the answer [15:26] if you can get VLC to play the vid [15:26] it'll stream it [15:27] and thats something you can use for other purposes [15:27] nah it wont play the vid they are encrypted [15:27] hmmm [15:27] its a whole simulator and stuff besides videos [15:28] well [15:28] it seems like something you want to be running native [15:28] in windows [15:28] wine wont run the internet explorer with the web rdp client either [15:28] I guess this is a no go and i give up maybe in 10 years it will work.. [15:28] i believe a strongly worded email is in order [15:29] what do you suggest holstein [15:29] an email to testout [15:29] about linux support [15:30] yeah right like thats going to happen...good idea..not a chance in hell i am afraid..maybe i should send an email to the makers of rdesktop [15:30] both [15:30] at least rdesktop has a good reason [15:31] the same reason [15:31] proprietary [15:31] your right...thanks..I will leave ya alone now ...thanks for you help... [15:31] harry-houdini1: anytime [15:31] good luck [15:31] you too! [19:13] im trying to figure out how to go from logic to protools, anyone have any suggestions?? [19:16] tucemiux: you mean files? [19:16] can you just export/import? [19:16] wavs or whatever they both support? === wdreamer is now known as wirelessdreamer [23:06] Man, this system is cursed [23:06] sobukus: lol [23:06] whats up? [23:06] I had working network manager on monday, including 3G dialup in nm-applet. [23:06] i remember talking to you, but i forget [23:07] OH [23:07] and no good now [23:07] sobukus: did you get a kernel update? [23:08] i have to say [23:08] on my studio machine/install [23:08] i dont just go willie-nillie on the updates [23:10] Now today, the modem won't show anymore.. [23:10] it's still the same kernel [23:10] hmmm [23:10] The modem _works_ [23:10] did you do anything in the bios? [23:10] hmm [23:10] but it does not show in network manager [23:11] I can go online with svdial and a custom script to register in the network [23:11] wvdial [23:11] OH [23:11] thats probable the way to go anyways [23:11] i dont know how well dial-up is supported in NM [23:11] i tried a while back [23:11] hardy or so [23:11] and i gave up pretty quick [23:11] and actually, nm-applet was gone on first boot today [23:12] and went to something like wvdial [23:12] dialup worked fine for me in older ubuntu installs [23:12] i think it was the modem i was using [23:12] and it actually worksed initially ... but something beinhd the scenese broke the communication with network manager [23:13] I don't see the point in ubuntu if these clicky-thingies don't work [23:13] bbl... dinner-time [23:13] well, it's midnight here, so ... too;-) [23:13] * sobukus hopes someone will reply to the post on ubuntustudio users mailing list [23:14] perhaps it's just some dbus crap going wrong ... [23:14] but exactly this mysterious works/does not work of the fancy stuff on top of the basics is very disconcerning [23:15] * sobukus prepares to leave the train ... while on 3G dialup from the laptop ... using Source Mage GNU/Linux with custom script [23:16] I am still giving ubuntu a chance here... but I really want to see some progress from the beta ... the shiny stuff should work (besides the other issues like SCSI root disk). [23:17] * sobukus off, too
