bjsniderSarvatt, are hyrbid graphics laptops supported at all? do they work?00:09
zombie0I am having graphics issues on my laptop using a hybrid nvidia g210m and onboard intel.  After a recent update to 10.04 my video has stopped work00:14
zombie0*working00:14
zombie0After selecting an image in grub it goes to a blank screen and thats as far as I can get00:14
bjsniderzombie0, you had working compiz off the livecd?00:16
zombie0well I just booted the live cd00:16
zombie0let me see00:17
zombie0bjsnider yep working compiz with live cd00:17
zombie0not using propriatery drivers00:17
Sarvattbjsnider: totally depends on the laptop00:17
bjsnideropen a terminal and run glxinfo00:17
bjsniderSarvatt, have you got a list or something?00:18
zombie0mesa-utils isnt installed and its saying that it isnt available00:19
bjsniderSarvatt, does it depend on his ability to shut one chip off manually int he bios?00:19
bjsniderzombie0, have you got a network connection to the web on that laptop?00:20
zombie0I am setting a hardline up now00:20
zombie0bjsnider: Ok have a connection but should I update/upgrade?  because it still cant find it as of now00:21
zombie0let me check if universe is enabled00:21
zombie0it wasnt00:22
zombie0got it now00:22
bjsnideri want to know who the renderer is00:23
Sarvattbjsnider: you have to dig through https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/312756?comments=all :) its really complicated by how its done different between different GPU combinations and different manufacturers (and bios revisions even..) 00:24
ubottuLaunchpad bug 312756 in xorg-server "support graphics card hot switch" [Wishlist,Triaged]00:24
zombie0pastebin.com/mUrqvZNG00:25
Sarvatthe's using the intel if compiz works on a livecd00:25
bjsniderSarvatt, didn't dave airlie just write the first code to deal with this?00:25
bjsniderSarvatt, must be, yes00:25
zombie0Mobile Intel GM4500:26
bjsniderif he could just get it to do that exery time he'd be fine00:26
zombie0yea maybe add a xorg.conf entry for that driver instead00:26
bjsnideryou might have to blacklist nouveau, nv and nvidia too00:27
zombie0not really sure how to do that00:27
bjsniderbut it could still decide to use vesa with the nvidia chip00:27
Sarvattzombie0: did you install the proprietary drivers or something?00:27
zombie0I didnt try to but I have a feeling on of the updates attempted to00:27
bjsniderSarvatt, without nvidia-current it selects nouveau00:28
bjsniderbecause he has no glx00:28
bjsniderand he doesn't have a manual switch in the bios00:28
bjsniderthe fact that the hardware is sending power to the nvidia chip is the problem. the kernel sees it and watns to use it00:29
bjsnidermaybe the laptop only uses the intel chip if you're booting off the cd instead of the hard drive00:31
zombie0so would it be worth trying to blacklist those other types of drivers?00:34
zombie0well I can now get regular video on boot by using driver "intel" with xorg.conf00:42
zombie0but no glx00:43
zombie0uninstalled nvidia-current and nouveau and now its picking up the intel glx00:48
zombie0all good, reboots with glx enabled00:51
zombie0bjsnider and Sarvatt:  thanks alot for the help guys!  really needed it.  Have a great night and a beer on me :)00:53
Sarvattahh sorry, went afk there but it did sound like that was the problem, jockey probably saw the device and offered it when its not the graphics device in use00:54
bjsniderwhere's my beer?01:06
bjsniderwhat happens when the hardware decides to switch to nvidia?01:06
RAOFbjsnider: Then we ask him to test 2.6.34, where VGA switcheroo is implemented.01:28
bjsniderRAOF, that's the airlie code?01:29
RAOFbjsnider: Yeah.  ACPI methods to switch graphics cards.01:29
bjsnideri'm not sure xorg/mesa is prepared for that01:30
johanbrlast I heard, it required restarting X01:32
rippshmm.... I think my Xorg became very slow after a save-file dialog in my browser. Perhaps that's what's causing the Xorg high cpu usage. Is there a program associated with open-save dialog windows?01:50
Sarvattripps: gtk+01:57
Sarvattripps: are you using chromium by any chance? :D01:57
rippsSarvatt: sorry, I was away from computer. Yes, I'm using chromium03:05
rippsBut the Xorg cpu usage persists even after I've closed chromium03:06
Sarvatthmm, our cairo pad patch is slightly different than what other distros are using - http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/devel/cairo/cairo-1.8.6-repeat-modes.patch?view=markup03:29
Sarvatthttp://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/lucid/cairo/lucid/annotate/head:/debian/patches/06_Xlib-Xcb-Hand-off-EXTEND_PAD-to-XRender.patch03:29
Sarvattwooo, mass X lib update04:13
* hyperair wonders whether the nvidia binary drivers are working in lucid yet08:30
tjaaltonjust fine08:50
RAOFHave been working for some time.09:13
RAOFSarvatt: Hm, yeah.  We should probably grab that change for Maverick.  It looks like it will expose some untested driver paths if we grab it now.  Also, firefox is now bundlezilla, so won't benefit.09:18
SarvattRAOF: any ideas on what to do about nouveau in edgers? i'd like to drop lbm since i cant keep it updated and make it require a 2.6.34 kernel somehow17:35
Sarvattwish I could copy the mainline kernels directly into the PPA :D17:35
johanbractually, why not?17:36
Sarvattwhy not what?17:38
johanbrput the mainline kernels into the PPA17:38
Sarvattbecause they are built with external scripts i cant do in a ppa I believe? i haven't had time to work this out17:40
Sarvatti dont know how to bump the abi properly for a PPA kernel17:42
johanbroh17:43
Sarvatti dont use it and have a lot of other things taking up my time, and nouveau in edgers is stagnating because i havent been able to update it in almost a month (outside of mesa) because we can't update lbm-nouveau due to the backlight changes in 2.6.34 that upstream rebased onto17:51
johanbrwell, maybe the easiest thing is just to wait until the first lucid+1 kernel is released17:56
Sarvattit already is, i could copy it in there17:57
Sarvattbut it'd be a lot more useful to be able to merge upstream nouveau into it17:57
johanbroh, I didn't realize it was already out...18:01
Sarvattoh man, so many compiz fixes upstream since our version :(18:03
Sarvattbryceh: driconf options would be good to have added to mesa bug reports18:13
Sarvatthmm doesn't look like fglrx is getting removed properly upgrading from hardy-lucid on the cards that fglrx no longer supports18:43
Sarvattmaybe it'd be a good idea to just completely remove fglrx on upgrade and people can install it manually again after18:57
johanbrwouldn't that break some setups?19:05
johanbrsay you specify fglrx in xorg.conf, and then fglrx is removed19:05
tjaaltonupdate-manager could take care of that. the same thing happens with nvidia aiui19:41
