penguin42neon__: I've not tried the frglx drivers on lucid, (my hd4350 works with the open drivers) but someone before suggested sudo aticonfig --initial00:00
ZeroKewlim on ubutun 10.04 if that helps00:00
OxymoronCould someone explain to me why not Chromium or Firefox stops if I am looping an ifninite loop inside it? (Accidently created a infinite loop in programming xD)00:04
Zenkeris there a limewire equivalent for 10.04?00:06
joejayManyone tried beta2 on eeepc900 hw? it seems to broken my wireless n sound00:07
duffydackI had to use aticonfig --initial to get it to work... directly after installing the fglrx driver00:07
neon__open drivers?00:08
neon__you mean the ones that get install using the restricted drivers dialog?00:08
duffydackrestricted ones in hardware drivers00:09
duffydackthe open one is just 'there'00:09
psi_caibre doent works, give a segmentation fault. :(00:09

MulderSuperMiguel, where is the slowness coming in?00:16
ZeroKewlforstwire works fine u have to install java6 though00:16
SuperMiguelMulder, loading sites00:16
MulderSuperMiguel, nope, not a problem for me00:16
joejayMSuperMiguel, FF worked ok for me in beta1 but haven tried under beta2 yet due to wifi problem00:16
Mulderi did have a performance/stability issue but that was caused by me pushing xorgedgers00:17
SuperMiguelummm00:18
SuperMiguelwonder why :S00:18
Mulderstarcraft/broodwar sadly doesnt work properly in wine anymore due to new kms drivers00:19
Mulderoh well00:19
laumonier1hi there i have a problem since im on lucid now when im watching a video after a few minutes my screen becom full of color line and i cant do anything exept reboot. Does someone have the same problem? somebody could give me a piece of advise??thanks00:19
Mulderlaumonier1, what graphics card?00:20
Muldersounds like a video driver problem00:20
laumonier1ati radeon mobility x170000:20
Blue11Mulder: that was gonna be my question00:20
laumonier1no problem on karmic00:20
Blue11laumonier1: old card?00:20
laumonier13 year00:20
Zenkeris frostwire as good as limewire, like is it as fast/faster and can i still dl the same stuff?00:20
Mulderyeah, i think it's due to buggy ati drivers00:20
Blue11newer then my ati card -- I have some issues but not that00:20
Mulderwell, either driver, or the drm, or the kms stuff00:20
Blue11laumonier1: what happens if you restart the gdm?00:21
laumonier1gdm?(im noob)00:21
Blue11laumonier1: graphic display manager -- have you tried a sudo service gdm restart00:21
laumonier1after graphic problem?00:21
Blue11well you'd have to enter that in a terminal window00:22
Blue11or do an alt+f200:22
Zenkerok ill just try it out, but how do i get it its not in the software center ?00:22
laumonier1when i do ctrl alt f1 or other the problem is still here00:22
Blue11ahh00:23
eldonany of you all have issues with 10.04 booting up to the login screen, but the window doesn't show up, just sits with a purple backround? i can press the power button and the shutdown/restart/standyby window shows up00:23
Blue11laumonier1: what driver are you using?00:23
laumonier1radeon00:23
laumonier1basic driver00:24
Blue11laumonier1: ahh I am using the stock ati driver00:24
Blue11laumonier1: this is what I have:  01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]00:24
penguin42oh, that's an OLD Radeon00:25
Blue11penguin42: quite old00:25
Mulderlaumonier1, try ctrl alt f1, then sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart00:25
Mulderyou will lose your current session00:25
Blue11Mulder: okay that works too00:25
penguin42Blue11: I had one similar that I could never quite get happy with 3d stuff00:25
laumonier1cant do anything because i see nothing after the problem00:25
laumonier1only color line which appears and dissapears very fast00:25
Blue11laumonier1: have you checked your x settings?00:25
coc0nutctrl+alt+f1 should bring you to a terminal though00:25
wer-ist-rogerhej everyone. My computer shows a black screen after booting into the system. I read some other posts about this problem. But nobody never relly fixed it00:26
wer-ist-rogeror it was fixed by a newer kernel00:26
wer-ist-rogerany body got the same problem and got to fix it?00:27
penguin42wer-ist-roger: What graphics card?00:27
Blue11wer-ist-roger: i had that problem a few weeks  back but they seemed to fix it.00:27
Blue11what kernel are you running?  Hint:  uname -a00:27
wer-ist-rogerpenguin42: ATI EES100000:28
penguin42wer-ist-roger: Oh not come accross the EES stuff - try booting with radeon.modeset=0 on the kernel line00:28
wer-ist-rogerBlue11: right now I'm running 32-19-generic. But I also tried server00:28
Blue1132.19 is the latest --00:29
wer-ist-rogeras a matter of fact I started with server and went to generic after having problems with graphic all the time00:29
crimsunpenguin42: is blender a native pulse app?00:29
Blue11well server edition is mostly for command line operatons00:29
Blue11wer-ist-roger: where you don't really need x-windows00:30
wer-ist-rogerBlue11: that's the reason why I switched to general. I'm running a server but need an X for one very important application00:30
Blue11wer-ist-roger: what's that?00:30
Micc_will my computer still boot with an older kernel after upgrading to 10.04 beta2 and linux-image-2.6.32-19-generic failed to install00:30
penguin42crimsun: Don't know; in it's package dependencies I don't see pulse but I do see libalut0 which is apparently an OpenAL implementation00:31
Blue11pulse audio is a piece00:31
wer-ist-rogerBlue11: It is kind of complicated it has something to do with streaming a webcam for security reasons. But mostly it runs server systems (and even them run in a virtual maschine)00:31
Blue11wer-ist-roger: yeah that is beyond my knowledge level00:32
DanaGIf you have specific issues with pulseaudio, file bugs on those issues.  Otherwise, it's just bashing or ranting. =þ00:32
DanaGoh yeah, try going to #radeon with those ATI issues.00:32
crimsunpenguin42: hmph, openal-soft is already fixed, however. Can you check your verbose log?00:32
Blue11DanaG: have specific issues, I contacted them, nothing yet.00:32
penguin42crimsun: You mean rerun in log-level 4 again?00:32
crimsunBlue11: do you have patches for the issues you're experiencing with pulse?00:32
crimsunpenguin42: yes00:33
wer-ist-rogerbasicly you don't have to worry about all those services of the system. Right now I just want to have running X00:33
Blue11crimsun: no -- I have to jiggle the digital volume control between songs, or the audio goes fritzy00:33
crimsunBlue11: please provide patches, thanks.00:33
Blue11crimsun: how can I?  I don't know how to fix that...00:33
crimsunBlue11: have you filed a bug report against alsa-base?00:34
eldonhere's a piece, should i file a bug report on the fact that 32-18 is able to communicate with my usb hard drive, but 32-19 isn't? qosmio x305 laptop.00:34
wer-ist-rogerpenguin42: where do I have to type in modeset=0 ?00:34
Blue11crimsun: I did unless they removed it.00:34
crimsunBlue11: bug reports can't be removed. Which bug report did you file?00:34
Micc_I get this error when I try to apt-get install the linux kernel. Internal Error: Could not find image (/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19-generic)00:34
Blue11crimsun let me see if I xcan find it brb00:34
crimsuneldon: I'd wait until later next week (e.g., Monday/Tuesday) after -20 is released00:34
penguin42wer-ist-roger: Get the grub menu by holding shift as your system boots and then edit the boot line of the kernel (I think it's e to get to edit) and then add radeon.modeset=000:34
eldonthanks00:35
crimsuneldon: i.e., there isn't much point in testing with -19 since it's going to be superceded in a matter of hours/days00:35
RPG-MasterOK, I have a bug to report00:35
Blue11crimsun: oh they closed one of them - the no volume control one - don't see the other one00:36
crimsunBlue11: which bug report?00:36
penguin42crimsun: paste.ubuntu.com/412345/00:36
RPG-MasterWhen I push the little button on my trackpad, it turns off the pad, but it makes me click it 2 times to turn it back on, and then the light on my pad is orange (stands for off) so I have to push it one more time to make the light blue (on)00:37
Blue11crimsun: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-sound/+bug/538099  one of the issues00:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 538099 in indicator-sound "No Volume Control Applet Display" [Low,Invalid]00:37
wer-ist-rogerpenguin42: thx I will try this. I hope it works. But I have to wait about half an houre till I can test it00:37
Blue11i will see if I can refile and see what happens00:37
penguin42wer-ist-roger: No problem, it seems to have helped some ATI hd5xxx series users00:37
RPG-MasterAnyone here using the beta on a laptop?00:37
crimsunBlue11: no need to refile00:38
crimsunBlue11: you've conflated two symptoms in that one bug report00:38
wer-ist-rogerpenguin42: even though I don't have a hd5xxx card I hope it will help00:38
eldonRPB-Master yes, x305 qosmio00:38
crimsunBlue11: "the volume control...never has an option to display" is one bug00:38
penguin42wer-ist-roger: I made the suggestion because perhaps it's a whole bunch of the ATI cards that kms shouldn't be touching00:38
crimsunBlue11: "...then the sound buzzes a lot" is a separate bug00:39
crimsunBlue11: one bug report per symptom, please00:39
crimsunpenguin42: doesn't look like it's using the native route: Apr 11 00:33:34 major pulseaudio[1862]: client.c: Freed 48 "ALSA plug-in [blender-bin]"00:40
crimsunpenguin42: do you have a custom openal-soft configuration file in /etc/ or ~/ ?00:41
penguin42crimsun: Any idea how to check if the one in /etc/openal is the package default?00:42
penguin42crimsun: The one that's there has all the active lines commented out including the one that sets driver order00:44
crimsunsha256sum /etc/openal/alsoft.conf00:44
crimsun08e81baa4430e1afba439bdcad5ece04316a667764123d97e44f883e5dacd61b  /etc/openal/alsoft.conf00:44
penguin42yep, that matches00:44
crimsunit should be set to use pulse by default. Perhaps blender has a configuration option to set the output driver?00:44
penguin42crimsun: I've tried nuking my .blender00:46
Blue11wow firefox is having some issues gonna try opera00:46
penguin42crimsun: I seem to have a .libao which has in it the line default_driver=pulse so you would have thought that's right00:46
sjdhi. can someone help me with setting up the lucid themes in Karmic ?00:49
autobotsjd: System -> Preferences -> Appearance00:50
crimsunpenguin42: ~/.libao != openal-soft00:50
sjdSorry, I mean t install them.00:50
penguin42crimsun: Well I don't have any openal stuff in ~ at all - but still00:51
crimsunlibao2 and libopenal1 are pretty different :-)00:51
penguin42ok00:51
penguin42crimsun: This bug isn't a biggy for me - it just struck me that something was going on00:52
sjdcrimsun: do you have any pointers to setting up lucid themes to karmic? thanks!00:52
crimsunsjd: no, sorry, not my area00:53
sjdcrimsun: alright. sorry00:53
crimsunpenguin42: I'm not sure blender even has a native pulse backend00:54
viniciushm, it's been 2 days now, and some of my purchased music are still being transfered to ubuntu one00:54
penguin42crimsun: I couldn't see any settings for it00:54
Blue11crimsun re;ported the bug don't have the bug number00:54
crimsunBlue11: eh? It should be obvious from the web page...00:55
dodddummythe colors are wrong when i play dvds.  is that a known issue?00:55
crimsundodddummy: perhaps. Check the bug reports for your X.Org video driver.00:55
Blue11crimsun: I closed the browser, then tried to go back in after it, but I guess I have set opera up to keep to history00:55
dodddummycrimsun, about 5 different nvidia cards i've tried00:55
crimsunBlue11: which package did you file against?00:55
Blue11and it absolutely doesn't work on firefox00:55
MBHAKMcrimsun: Is there any possibility to check via HDAAnlayzer  for bug#55597800:56
crimsundodddummy: are you using nouveau or NVidia?00:56
Blue11crimsun: I said I didn't know, but it may be under indator appet00:56
crimsunMBHAKM: possibly, but I'm busy ATM00:56

MiccI just upgraded my laptop to 10.04 beta2, but it won't boot now.01:09
MiccIt says error: unkown command 'LoadFont' then error: File not found01:09
penguin42what else does it say?01:10
Miccthats it, then it reboots.01:10
polimatyuI'm having some weird errors on boot, broken pipes.01:10
MiccI don't even see the grub menu anymore.01:11
Miccis there a way to force the grub menu?01:11
penguin42Micc: Hold down left shift right at the start01:11
Miccok let me try that.01:11
polimatyuAlso, the record your encryption passphrase dialog box is broken on a new install.01:13
MiccThat doesn't do anything, same thing happens. unknown command 'loadfont'.01:14
Miccthen error: file not found.01:15
MiccI get the windows boot loader first01:15
Miccwhere it shows windows 7 then ubuntu01:15
penguin42Micc: google suggests that's a grub problem and given that you had problems installing and setting up kernels I wonder if the two are related01:16
MiccI had a problem before this where the first kernel version wouldn't load. I would have to select the second one down.01:17
MiccIs there a way to repair grub with a recovery cd or somethign?01:17
iconmefisto!grub01:18
ubottugrub is the default boot manager for Ubuntu releases before Karmic (9.10). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto - See !grub2 for Karmic onwards.01:18

penguin42Micc: Is this machine an upgrade from karmic or something earlier01:18
Miccyes01:18
Micc9.1001:18
penguin42was it a karmic fresh install or was it upgraded to karmic?01:19
Zenkerim trying to install frostwire and i get this Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: sun-java6-jre. . i checked the software center and i do have openJDK java 6 runtime,  web start and the icedtea java plugin, what am i missing01:19
Miccpenguin42, I think it was wubi or a fresh install01:19
penguin42Micc: If you dpkg -l grub    does the line start with un or ii ?01:20
Micccan I burn a 10.04 beta2 CD and install over the top without format and keep my files?01:20
Miccpenguin42, I can't boot the machine now, so I can't run any commands like that.01:20
penguin42ah hmm01:20
ZenkerMicc the best suggestion i have for u is to move your  files somewhere else temp, install , then move them back01:20
Micctheres nothing on there I couldn't manage to loose.01:21
Miccall my work is on servers and in svn.01:21
MiccI have a few notes, but thats no biggy.01:21
penguin42Micc: It sounds like me that your grub config files are rather corrupt somehow; you might be able to fix them by looking in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/grub if you can mount htem with a rescue cd01:22
Zenkeranother suggestion, use ubuntu one to ul them, then dl them later01:22
penguin42Micc: Alternatively I wonder if you're machine is actuallly still running grub 1 (grub 0.97-blah) in which no wonder it doesn't like a new config file01:22
MiccZenker, at the moment I can't start the system, so thats not an option.01:22
Miccpenguin42, I remember seeing it run grub and install windows7 and ubuntu multiple images.01:23
* penguin42 goes to bed01:25
ScuniziJava Console is no longer supported in FireFox but one of my work sites requires it.. Is there a way around this issue?01:26
antistrangeanyone here know how to get an elantech touchpad working correctly (it's identified as ps2 wheel mouse) multitouch works but unconfigurable01:26
iconmefistoMicc: do you see the splash? or just the error message01:26
Miccjust the error message, no menu even.01:26

bezdomniI just upgraded to 10.4 and the LED (or laser or whatever it is in there that emits a bright red light) is on for no reason.01:26
bezdomniIs this a kernel issue?01:26
crimsunwhich LED?01:27
bezdomniIs there more than one LED in my headphone jack?01:27
Zenkerim trying to install frostwire and i get this Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: sun-java6-jre. . i checked the software center and i do have openJDK java 6 runtime, web start and the icedtea java plugin, what am i missing01:27
crimsunbezdomni: yes, that's a linux issue. Please use linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev. A reboot is necessary.01:27
bezdomniIt's the headphone jack on my Macbook Pro (running 10.4) that won't turn off.01:27
bezdomniI've reboot twice.01:27
aprilharehello01:28
bezdomniAnd then I shut down, and then turned the power back on.01:28
crimsunbezdomni: please read the above instructions.01:28
bezdomniOk.01:28
bezdomnicrimsun: Oh, I get what you're saying. Thanks!01:28
aprilharei just upgraded to lucid. my main account is so crudified that i feel a strong desire to create a fresh account and move all my files to it. what is the best way to do this?01:28
Miccwill an install cd be able to see a wubi partition?01:30
wer-ist-rogerpenguin42: just to let you know it worked01:31
aprilharefor instance, my window manager crashes on login. it's unacceptable.01:31
wer-ist-rogermy ati works now01:31
iconmefistoaprilhare: I suppose first you should create a new user (gui or with adduser) and see if logging in with that user improves things01:31
bezdomniThe performance in general feels a bit laggy and sluggish after the upgrade as well...icons and applications are taking longer to load, the notification area on my panel is clustered and behaves weirdly, and the ubuntu startup screen is really weird01:32
aprilhareiconmefisto: i already have. it does.01:32
aprilhareiconmefisto: now i'm up to the actual 'what to do next' bit01:32
Zenkerim trying to install frostwire and i get this Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: sun-java6-jre. . i checked the software center and i do have openJDK java 6 runtime, web start and the icedtea java plugin, what am i missing or should i install the linux version-if so how do i do this?01:32

peterwangHey guys. How do you change the Default theme for Plymouth?01:35
Zenkerpeterwang perhaps you can install one of the others from the software center01:37
aprilharebbl01:37
Zenkerdoes anyone know how to install frostwire?01:37
peterwangZenker: I installed the themes. I need a command to switch to one of the themes now.01:38
Zenkerpeterwant its probably gonna be in the grub conf somewhere, idk much about this stuff though01:39
Zenkeroops peterwang01:39
peterwangwhat is it?01:40
iconmefistopeterwang: sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth01:42
iconmefistopeterwang: then do: sudo update-initramfs -u01:43
aprilhareafter updating, the default login screen didn't change in appearance (including background).01:44
peterwangiconmefisto: thanks a bunch01:45

Zenkerim trying to install frostwire and i get this Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: sun-java6-jre. . i checked the software center and i do have openJDK java 6 runtime, web start and the icedtea java plugin, what am i missing01:46
coc0nutyou need to install sun-java6-jre01:46
coc0nutIt's different from openjdk01:47
Zenkercoc0nut i cant for some reason?01:47
coc0nut=/01:47
coc0nutwhat does this give you: sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre01:47
Zenkerahh i think its working :) thank you, there is no install button for it in the software center01:49
coc0nutNo problem!01:49
Zenkerdo i need 2 restart, it still said the same thing?01:49
coc0nutJust close and open the software centre once the package is installed01:49
coc0nutmaybe that'll help it recognise it01:50
Zenkerhmm. ok, i think maybe its because i have a 64 bit os?01:50
coc0nutI don't think that should affect it.01:51
coc0nutTry restarting, see if that helps!01:51
Zenkerkk brb01:51
Zenkernope that didnt help01:53
coc0nut=/01:53
Zenkeroh i think i see the problem, it appears the downloader from the site is giving me the wrong version, its i586 and im using a 64 bit01:56
coc0nutThat could be it01:57
Zenkerhmmm i found a success story here  http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-477363.html   any idea how he did it?02:00
Zenkeroh wait i should have read more, just forget it, ill stick with limewire02:01
Miccdoes wubi use a different version of grub?02:26
Miccthan 10.04?02:26
benomaticanybody by chance seen alsa fail when updating (aptitude) beta2 -> current?  (i have an intel hda that worked off clean install, now aplay -l show no devices.)02:39
Xgateswell I was hoping to see in Beta2 a cleaner bootup, what I mean by that is, after grub loads you just get the purple splash screen then straight to Gnome, but I still see stuff in the background console being spit out onto the screen and the same when you reboot, you always get the console login screen and some shut down processes then the splash screen appears after a bit03:05
Xgatesstill not a clean looking startup and reboot... :(03:05
sirninjaI'm having a problem. After my laptop wakes up from suspend, ubuntu doesn't manage the cooling properly "acpi -V" reveals this: http://pastebin.org/146434 It's not detecting the temperature correctly03:06
jdsbluedevlsirninja: did you file a bug report?03:10
sirninjajdsbluedevl: I've never done that before. How would I go about doing that?03:10
jdsbluedevlwell, first google your problem and see if anyone else has experienced it.  That should give you some thought as to what process is doing it03:11
jdsbluedevlalso, look at the system monitor (or just type "top" into the terminal) to see if anything is taking up CPU usage03:12
jdsbluedevlafter you figure out what process it may be, go back to the terminal and type "ubuntu-bug PROCESSNAME" (substitute PROCESSNAME for your process)03:13
jdsbluedevlyou will need to register for a free LaunchPad account to do this03:14
iconmefistosirninja: "ubuntu-bug acpi-support" should automate the bug reporting quite a bit for you03:14
sirninjajbsdbluedevl: there isn't a process that's taking up the cpu, but if it's not detecting the temperature, so normal use causes it to become very hot03:14
sirninjaiconmefisto: thanks03:14
sirninjawhat would be a good bug summary of this issue? I'm not sure of what the proper terminology would be03:19
iconmefistosirninja: not detecting CPU temperature after wake up from suspend (?) something like that? is that what is wrong?03:21
iconmefistoor "CPU temperature not detected correctly"03:22
sirninjaDo I need to include further information or does the stuff automatically collected tell them everything they need to know?03:24
iconmefistoif you can think of any other info, put that in too. you'll get email notifications when people respond to the bug report, and they will as for more info if needed03:25

ZykoticK9RPG-Master, no gtk-decorator here either, perhaps Dr_Willis meant "metacity --replace" ? i'm just guessing.07:27
MBHAKMI am looking for help . My internal microphone doesn't work while sound recording and voice chat07:28
RPG-Masterthat did something... it's not giving me an error message but its also not letting enter anymore commands07:28
MBHAKMTesting with an updated Lucid 10.04 Beta, the internal microphone doesn't work for Sound Recorder. I can play music and video sound but not recording and voice call outgoing cannot hear07:29
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, you'd have to put "metacity --replace &" to get the terminal back i imagine07:29
MBHAKM uname -r07:30
MBHAKM2.6.32-19-generic07:30
MBHAKM$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec\#*|grep -i codec07:30

MBHAKMMy ALSA info script is located at07:30
MBHAKMhttp://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=caf13f54adb8f2a7f7c3619b23a90f717b1d360407:30
MBHAKMPlease advise any workaround to solve this?07:30
ZykoticK9MBHAKM, use pastebin in future!  Did you happen to post this problem/question to Launchpad by chance?07:31
MBHAKMyes i posted to launchpad07:31
MBHAKMok thanks for pastebin info07:32
ZykoticK9MBHAKM, ya I remember reading it earlier - i had the same issue a couple of days ago as well, but we have different soundcards07:32
MBHAKMZykoticK9:I have Realtex ALC26807:33
lucky4linuxAfter I installed Lucid Lynx beta 1, everything was perfect. But when I select windows XP from grub menu, the windows XP screen comes up and then the machine starts rebooting.07:35
mawstOk now before I completley destroy my grub config again, when I get the the part about "grub install devices" should I be only checking the drive I want to boot from or...?07:38
RPG-MasterWell, that fixed nothing :(07:39
Dr_Willismawst:  thats how i do it.07:39
Dr_Willismawst:  you are instaslling to somthing special/unusual?07:39
RPG-MasterNOW I have to use "metacity replace" if I want to have window decorations :(07:40
mawstNo.07:40
Dr_WillisRPG-Master:  install and use fusion-icon as a easier way to switch07:40
Dr_Willissounds like compiz is crashing.07:40
RPG-MasterDr_Willis: Even after metacity starts, compiz still crashes the same way07:41
Dr_Willisif metacity starts..  its replaceing compiz.. so im not sure what you mean.07:41
Blue11Dr_Willis: they removed compiz a few days ago07:42
Dr_Willisbut i thought it came back yesterday07:42
Blue11Dr_Willis: let me try07:42
Dr_Willisits working here...07:43
Dr_Willisor at least it was.. let me see07:43
Dr_WillisYep - its working here..07:43
ZykoticK9Blue11, just an FYI but compiz would only have been removed if you did a Partial Upgrade -- using "aptitude safe-upgrade" doesn't remove things, and avoids problems (when using a development release)07:44
mawstOk well here goes...07:44
mawstbrb07:44
Blue11Dr_Willis: compiz is definately broken here07:45
ZykoticK9Compiz is working fine here07:45
RPG-MasterI just installed the compiz package (it was removed some how) and this is the new error I get: kde-window-decorator(4220) KWD::KDecorationPlugins::loadPlugin: kwin : path  ""  for  "kwin3_oxygen"07:46
RPG-Masterkde4-window-decorator: Could not enable decorations on display ":0.0"07:46

Blue11ZykoticK9: I did a system/adminstration/update manager07:46
RPG-Mastersorry for the multi row post...07:46
ZykoticK9Blue11, BUT when you started that, did it say Partial Upgrade?  I'm guessing it did it compiz was removed -- if you get a Partial Upgrade message DON'T DO IT07:47
Dr_Willisyou are using compiz with kde?07:47
Blue11ZykoticK9: yes, I think it said that.07:47
RPG-MasterNO! And thats whats so weird! :O07:47
Blue11ZykoticK9: too late now07:48
RPG-MasterWhy is it looking for kwen when I'm using GNOME?07:48
ZykoticK9Blue11, it did - in future if you get that message - cancel out and use the aptitude command instead!07:48
Blue11ZykoticK9: compiz has always been flakey for me anyway07:48
lucky4linuxAfter I installed Lucid Lynx beta 1, everything was perfect. But when I select windows XP from grub menu, the windows XP screen comes up and then the machine starts rebooting.07:49
lucky4linuxplease help07:49
Blue11compiz seems to not work well with ati cards07:49
astronouth7303Blue11: but that's been the case for a while, hasn't it?07:49
Blue11astronouth7303: correct07:49
ZykoticK9Blue11, linux seems to not work well with ati cards07:49
Dr_Willis'ati seems to not play well with linux' :)07:50
Blue11astronouth7303: it did work in SuSE though (compiz)07:50
Dr_WillisI imageine its all about the versions of X and the ati drivers..07:50
Blue11Dr_Willis: i think you are correct - that seems to be the case07:50
astronouth7303oh, nothing using OpenGL works07:51
Blue11the alsa sound driver suxs on my system, but again, worked ok with suse07:51
RPG-MasterJockey's not letting me enable my nvidia card. Here's the log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/412457/07:52
Blue11naw it doesn't sux - it vacuums!07:52
Dr_Willisbut with compiz eyecandy it Vacumes in a sexy little maid outfit!07:54
Dr_Willis:)07:54
Blue11Dr_Willis: indeed!07:54
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, what driver is Xorg currently using?  "lspci -vnvn" and find the VGA section, and Kernel Driver in Use: part07:54
Blue11Dr_Willis: alsa suxs more then not having compiz07:54
ZykoticK9Dr_Willis, i like your compiz statement above :)07:54
mawstI survived Beta1 to Beta2 upgrade.07:55
mawst:D07:55
Dr_Willisits funny - because its true..07:55
astronouth7303Ok. It's not just that I don't have glx. I don't have OpenGL at all.07:55
Blue11is there a way to disable alsa, and revert back to pulse audio?07:56
Dr_WillisErr.. Pulse audio uses alsa.07:56
Blue11Dr_Willis: :-(07:56
Dr_Williskernel -> alsa -> pulse -> YourPrograms07:56
RPG-MasterZykoticK9: Kernel driver in use: nvidia07:57
RPG-MasterKernel modules: nvidia-current, nvidiafb, nouveau07:57
Blue11Dr_Willis: ahh I thought alsa and pulse were 2 divergent ideas - that would explain a lot...07:57
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, so are your graphics working?07:57
Dr_WillisBlue11:  yep - people often dont understand how the 2 are related07:57
ZykoticK9Blue11, Pulse replaces ESD not Alsa07:57
RPG-MasterZykoticK9: Well, how can I tell besides running compiz?07:58
Blue11ZykoticK9: ahh I didn't know that - but everything worked before I went to ubuntu on this system07:58
RPG-Masterbecause... you know... compiz is hating me :(07:58
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, i think you must have done the partial upgrade as well that broke compiz (don't know the fix for that) - but if you have any 3d games installed see if they are running properly (i'm guessing they will)07:59
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, you could also try glxgears and check the fps there08:00
Blue11owch I am only getting 850 fps out of this card08:01
RPG-MasterOK, gears are doing good08:01
Blue11used to get over 200008:02
RPG-MasterBlue11: But not over 9000?08:02
RPG-Master...sorry08:02
ZykoticK9Blue11, if you have any vsync enabled that would explain the low glxgears fps08:02
Blue11RPG-Master: I have this card:  01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]08:02
Blue11 an oldie for sure08:02
Blue11ZykoticK9: not that I know of08:03
RPG-MasterBlue11: No, "Over 9000" is a famous Dragon Ball Z quote :P08:03
Blue11ZykoticK9: how would I check vsync?08:04
ZykoticK9Blue11, i'm not sure with ATI -- with nvidia it's in nvidia-settings, there is also a vsync setting in ccsm08:04
joaopintohi08:05
joaopintoanyone got their locale broken after the latest updates ?08:05
Blue11ZykoticK9: let me schlepp a little08:05
Blue11bbiab08:06
ZykoticK9Blue11, 850 might be what the ATI card can do?08:06
Dr_WillisIm not even sure what locale really does. :) im a self centerred american. and rarely need to mess with it.08:07
Dr_Willisso it dosent seem broken here.08:07
ZykoticK9"Bill Gates" you know you don't have to admit to everything ;)08:08
joaopintoDr_Willis, :P08:08
* Dr_Willis hires more interns from over seas for 1/20 the price..08:09
joaopintoI was able to fix it with locale-gen08:09
Dr_Willismeanwhile.. back to reading the latest pc news.08:09
DanaGargh, something keeps turning my windows and taskbar invisible on netbook-edition.08:09
evilshadeslayerhey does anyone know of a PPA for the latest Kernels?08:12
evilshadeslayerlike 2.6.33 and 2.6.3408:12
Dr_Willistheres some ppa kernel repos out.. but i know better then to try them. :)08:13
Dr_WillisI think some even get updated daily08:13
evilshadeslayerDr_Willis: well i just want to try them out... if they are better then w00t :)08:13
evilshadeslayerDr_Willis: any LP links?08:13
evilshadeslayerso far i have : http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc1/08:13
evilshadeslayerone dir up and we have loads of releases.... but its not a PPA08:14
* evilshadeslayer needs +1 to get his karma up to 150008:15
RPG-MasterSo, do we still not know how to cure this compiz problem? :(08:16
RPG-Master'cus I really gots to go to bed...08:16
evilshadeslayerRPG-Master: no composting?08:16
RPG-Master:(08:16
evilshadeslayerRPG-Master: also checkout #compiz and see if they can help08:16
RPG-Mastergood idea :P08:17
Dr_WillisUbuntu Claims 12 Million Users as Lucid Linux Desktop Nears08:17
ZykoticK9evilshadeslayer, you don't seem to have your IRC nic registered in your LP account...08:17
LordKowsounds like a lot, but fedora claims ~24 mil08:17
Dr_Willisbut ubuntu is cooler. :)08:17
evilshadeslayerZykoticK9: hehe... its ~rohangarg08:17

Dr_WillisAlways neat to keep up on the latest linux news. Hers a neat artical on the next-generation of filesystems and what we might all be using a year or so from now,  http://www.linuxinsider.com/rsstory/69732.html08:20
Dr_WillisIs btrfs allready in 10.04 ? ive not really looked into it.08:21
shadeslayerDr_Willis: i was going to ask the same thing08:21
shadeslayerDr_Willis: i think it is a option for / but ive not tried it08:21
Dr_Willisbrtfs seems to have some neat features..08:21
ZykoticK9Dr_Willis, is see a btrfs-tools and dbg package08:21
* shadeslayer just wants a better boot time08:22
shadeslayerand nouveau+3D support in stable drivers08:22
shadeslayerDr_Willis: any idea on that PPA ?08:23
LordKowgreat news: moz devs making progress on sandboxing plugins :)08:24
LordKowoh, a working patch!08:24
Dr_WillisHmm.08:29
Dr_WillisLordKow:  yep. that will be handy08:29
* shadeslayer uses chromium and rekonq....08:30
shadeslayerFF has a old GUI :P08:30
ZykoticK9shadeslayer, did you see Chrome (or Chromium) is going to start shipping with embedded flash player?08:30
Dr_WillisI still perfer FF in many ways08:30
LordKowyea i use chromium but its nice to see firefox catching up08:30
shadeslayerZykoticK9: nope... thats pretty lame08:31
shadeslayerZykoticK9: what if i want HTML5?08:31
LordKowZykoticK9: um i dont think chromium will... im not sure licensing would allow it08:31
ZykoticK9shadeslayer, sort of - does mean flash will be sandboxed by default08:31
LordKowgoogle-chrome? i can see it.08:31
shadeslayerZykoticK9: i agree with LordKow08:31
shadeslayerlicensing issues!08:32
* shadeslayer answers more questions on LP08:32
ZykoticK9i hear that -- i've certainly switched to Chromium08:32
ZykoticK9from Chrome i mean08:32
Dr_WillisI found the adblock in FF worked better then in Chrome. but im trying chrome+adblock again.08:32
=== shadeslayer is now known as evilshadeslayer_
LordKowif you use chromium or chrome you08:34
LordKow've likely already seen sandboxing in action08:34
ZykoticK9LordKow, ya that's ture.. humm, perhaps this embedded flash isn't so cool as i initially thought...08:34
evilshadeslayer_oh btw grawity gave me this awesome script which uses libnotify with irssi,so if anyone wants it...08:35
LordKowZykoticK9: its a horrible idea.08:35

Blue11ZykoticK9: wow some weird crap going on08:38
ZykoticK9Blue11, with compiz?08:39
Blue11I just had to nuke gconf in order to bring up lucid08:39
Blue11ZykoticK9: but my fps is now up to 210008:39
ZykoticK9Blue11, well that's a big improvement over 80008:40
evilshadeslayer_ZykoticK9: do you get karma only after the question is closed?08:40
evilshadeslayer_or just answering it does the job...08:40
Blue11ZykoticK9: it was worth losing my gconf settings for that08:40
ZykoticK9evilshadeslayer_, you get a little just for posting an answer - you get a LOT if the person says your answer fixed there issue -- if they just mark it as solved, no bonus :(08:41
LordKowdie GEGLS die08:41
Blue11on the stock 9.10 live cd I get over 2400 fps - but on the lucid alpha live cd - glxgears is NOT installed08:41
evilshadeslayer_ZykoticK9: um so if the guy who posted the question says the answer solved the issue in a comment ill get alot of karma?08:42
ZykoticK9Blue11, i don't see how your gconf settings fit into the bigger picture i'm afraid - why did you nuke them?08:42
Dr_Willisevilshadeslayer_:  i have a similer script that works with WeeChat. :) its in the default weechat scripts even.08:42
evilshadeslayer_Dr_Willis: nice :)08:42
ZykoticK9evilnhandler, no - they have to click on the "this solved my issue" button, clicking "solved" right beside it - nothing for you08:42
Dr_Willisevilshadeslayer_:  now i see peoples pms in  a  notify. in kde or gnome..  how fun08:43
evilshadeslayer_Dr_Willis: cool!08:43
evilshadeslayer_ZykoticK9: ah..08:43
Dr_WillisYep. WeeChat is handy08:43
DanaGoh yeah, there's a new firefox beta with plugin crash-isolation.08:44
DanaGforgot what it was called.08:44
DanaGThe version in ubuntu-mozilla-daily doesn't seem to have that feature!08:45
ZykoticK9DanaG, LordKow beat you to the news a little while ago08:45
evilshadeslayer_wee chat is nice!08:45
DanaGyeah... anyway, is the ubuntu-mozilla-daily ppa supposed to have that feature?08:46
DanaGBecause it sure didn't, for me.08:46

Dr_WillisMBHAKM:  i pasted a url earlier for a simple 4 min switch to default to alsa...08:49
Dr_Willisbut ive never tested it on 10.0408:50
ZykoticK9Dr_Willis, upon closer examination of those directions - that only applies to gstreamer apps08:50
Dr_Willisif you say so.. ive never needed to actually use them08:51
Dr_WillisIve neer had pulse issues. :)08:51
ZykoticK9Dr_Willis, that's what the link says --- i leave Pulse where is it now, I'm enjoying Lucid's Pulse much more then Karmic's08:51

ZykoticK9MBHAKM, but that only applies to Gstreamer stuff08:56
ZykoticK9Martiner, assuming it was a kernel update that broke it -- can you hold SHIFT while booting and select an older kernel and see if it works?08:57
MartinerIts  the same kernel as before the update.. Is there a way to revert to previous networkmanager maybe? If thats the problem?08:58
MBHAKMZykoticK9: I'm aware of that URL. That URL is off no use already tested in 10.04 beta08:58

Dr_WillisHmm. is there a different one also> or has that site radically been redesigned in the last few days/weeks?09:07
ZykoticK9i was VERY surprised when i returned to my bookmark to send it too you -- big redesign i'd say09:08
Dr_Willishttp://ubuntu-manual.org/09:08

Dr_Willisbut they both point to the same download.09:10
ZykoticK9that does seem to be a bit of an oversight09:10
Dr_Willisat least we now HAVE an actual manual we can send newbies to :)09:11
Dr_Willisi skimmed it last night.. it still needs a little work in some areas.09:12

evilshadeslayer_hehe09:16
ZykoticK9Dr_Willis, you need to lobby to get the !controls factoid included ;)09:17
Dr_WillisThereis some factoid like that allready09:17
kev_strHey guys, the process of installation was pretty much done, and right before it should go and ask if I want to stay or reboot now it said Ubiquity crashed. is it safe to reboot anyways?09:17
ZykoticK9!controls09:17
ubottuIn Lucid, the minimize, maximize, and close buttons have been moved to the left side. For more information, please see http://alturl.com/b6ja | To move them back to the right-hand side, see http://alturl.com/x5d609:17
evilshadeslayer_kev_str: probably yes09:18
ZykoticK9I love that factoid -- it links to my site :) Pride.09:18
kev_strevilshadeslayer_: probably ? :)09:18
spiongrazhi, my lucid install always locks up after 1-30 minutes, hard lock up, no response to anything, when i reboot then i find nothing suspicious in the logfiles, this happens with kernel 2.6.32-19 2.6.33 2.6.34rc3  . how could i analyse the faulty behaviour ?09:19

kev_strsigh...gonna have to reinstall :@09:23
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, i think the problem you are having is mainly that there isn't a compiz problem!  The issue was caused by incorrect updating i believe, so i doubt there is a bug.09:23

evilshadeslayer_kev_str: well i dont think you need to reinstall09:23
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, without a time machine i have no idea09:23
RPG-Masterwell poo09:24
kev_strevilshadeslayer_: i tried accessing the partition, and it would let me see but on some folders it wouldn't09:24
RPG-MasterZykoticK9: could a future update fix it?09:24
evilshadeslayer_kev_str: probably because you need root access :)09:24
ZykoticK9RPG-Master, maybe, Dr_Willis's update every so oftern will hopefully fix it (with time)09:24
kev_strevilshadeslayer_: already did that ;) mint asks for the password before I access any other partition09:25

shadeslayerDr_Willis: and what about SSL support?09:38
Dr_Willisive not tried it lately.. lets see.09:38
shadeslayerah nvm09:38
DanaGWhen I try removing xorg.conf, it's seeming to try to use nv or vesa.09:38
Dr_Willisshadeslayer:  not sure.  i saw some docs on it. but never tried it09:38
ZykoticK9DanaG, it "should" be using nouveau -- lspci -vnvn and find the VGA and it will tell you what driver is being used09:39
DanaGIt was using nouvea with KMS (since I enabled that) just fine.... but xorg without xorg.conf was trying to do vesa or nv.09:40
Dr_WillisHmm. I dont even see that setting in Ubuntu-tweak any more09:41

LordKowkev_str: just a shot in the dark, but how much room are you giving ubiquity, from a disk space standpoint.09:56
kev_str10gb, LordKow09:56
kev_strcould it be that I am updating the installer?09:56
kev_strkklimonda: i got the log but i dont know what im looking for exactly09:57
LordKowkev_str:  it is possible that ubiquity is trying to update itself during an install process using ubiquity, now whether that is the problem or not i do not know.09:58
foxbuntu_irssianyone have thoughts on why my Alps touchpad is causing X to fail, it goes into low graphics mode but wont go past the error?09:59
LordKowkev_str: http://paste.ubuntu.com/ the ubiquity log09:59
kev_strLordKow: well at the beginning of the installation it asks if I want to update the installer. Everytime I'd tried so far i have updated. if it fails again I'll do it w/o updating it09:59

foxbuntu_irssiHey all, anyone have an idea how i can get X to go beyond an error about my touchpad? It goes into low graphics mode and then gets stuck (restarting X / continue in low graphics mode / ect ) leaves me in the same loop of options, it never gets to the actual session.10:20
Dr_Willisfoxbuntu_irssi:  here i tell it to exit to the console.. and it then works.. not sure wht10:21
foxbuntu_irssiDr_Willis: I can do that, and then I do get the console, but never the X session10:21

mavimocoz_: if i try to use hadrware driver utillity and install ATI driver (fglrx)my screen was "broken"10:55
coz_mavimo,  two things.....  first    a Radeon 7000 (or M6). For 7000 to HD4xxx series cards, you can use the open source "radeon" driver. HD2xxx and later series cards are also supported by the proprietary "fglrx" driver.   and second ..the one person I  completely trust with ati  troubleshooting is soreau in #compiz10:55
Dr_WillisI use hammers on ATI cards. :)10:55

nokia3510 Hello everyone11:58
nokia3510In Grub legacy, using vga=0x345 I get a decent resolution from boot to GDM11:58
nokia3510In grub2 however, /etc/default/GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024 works only for the Grub menu, and after initiating the boot process it switches back to a very low res mode until GDM11:58
nokia3510Can anyone point me in the right direction to achieve the grub-legacy result when using the newer version of it ?11:58
Dr_Willissounds like Plymouth issues. but i just disable plymouth.11:59
Dr_WillisI dont worry about the res of the boot screens/displays11:59
nokia3510Well, I do :)11:59
nokia3510useful for troubleshooting12:00
Dr_Willisgiven i got a 20 sec boot time.. I dont even see theimages enogh  to notice the res12:00
nokia3510perhaps, but when something goes wrong, it's more appropriate to have a decent res to work on, rather than having three letters/row :)12:01

Dr_Willisdisable the framebuffer compaetely and fall back to the 80x35 or whatever it is text mode. Ive never seen res go down to  low res like that.12:03

dashavooI'm trying to install the latest beta on an old laptop, but the whole thing hangs whenever it tries to start X, any suggestions?12:50
IdleOne!alternate12:52
ubottuThe Alternate CD is a classic text-mode install CD. It supports a wider range of hardware than the !LiveCD, and can also be used as an upgrade CD.  Look for the link on the Ubuntu download page - See also !minimal12:52
dashavoosorry, I didn't make myself clear12:52
dashavooI already installed it using the alternative cd, now trying to boot into the system it hangs when X tries to start12:52
penguin42dashavoo: Which graphics card?12:55
dashavoopenguin42: according to lspci intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphic Device12:56
penguin42hmm I thought that should work12:56
pac1anyone else having trouble with beta1 and beta2 hanging on boot?  this happens on the regular beta2 install disk and after installing the alternate beta1 or beta2.  series of dots turn colors for a while then stop.12:59
penguin42pac1: What hardware?12:59
penguin42dashavoo: does ctrl-alt-f1 work?12:59
pac1nvidia, 2 monitors one 1280x1024, one 1920x1080.  Oh and with one monitor it seems to work.13:01
dashavoopenguin42: no, the backlight is on, and the fan is definitely working (I've heard quieter vacuum cleaners), but the doesn't appear to be anything else going on... no flashing leds for disk access etc.13:01
penguin42pac1: Hmm the nividia guys normally don't seem to have that problem13:01
pac1oh?13:01
pac1I can reproduce it at will.  I'm a little unsure of what to collect in order to report it though.  Can you guide me on that?13:02
penguin42dashavoo: I'd probably boot off a live cd and see if I can see anything in the logs, specifically /var/log/Xorg.0.log - if it's trying to use compiz/desktop effects/3d I'd try and stop it13:02
pac1lspci of course, but what else?13:02
penguin42pac1: dmesg and dmidecode13:03
dashavooI looked in the logs but they are empty, and I also tried disabling compiz by making it inexecutable, but that made no difference13:03
hawkIf I have a command that I need to run before filesystems in fstab ar mounted, how would I achieve that these days? (10.04b2)13:03
penguin42hawk: Maybe if you put it in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-* and regenerated the initramfs it would do it13:04
penguin42dashavoo: I'd try and see if I could get it to boot without X13:04
aprilhareis the login screen still meant to look chocolatey?13:05
dashavooI can boot it without X if I use the rescue boot option, and things work until I try to start X from there and then the same problem13:05
aprilhare'cause it does here.13:05
hawkpenguin42: local-premount sounds like it might be the right thing, thanks.... I guess I'll have to read up on how to get the actual binary in place so it's available at that stage, though...13:06
penguin42dashavoo: I can't suggest much except report it as a bug against xserver-xorg-video-intel13:06
* penguin42 goes to get breakfast13:07
dashavoopenguin42: thanks for trying, enjoy breakfast13:09
aprilharedoes anyone else have the problem of the login screen not changing appearance after upgrade?13:10
aprilharei know appearances aren't essentially important, but still :)13:11

jimi_hendrixhello, i just installed the lucid lynx beta, and seem to be having video problems.  there are little purple flecks flashing across my screen and once in a while a line shoots all the way across, as if i was watching a tv that was getting some interference, but displaying a picture.  if i install the fglrx drive (my vid card is an ATI Mobility HD 3470), the purple flecks and lines go away, but then it is not smooth when i move my windows aro13:34
jimi_hendrixund (as i anticipated since ATI dropped support for my card in fglrx a little while back).  what should i do13:34
pac1hey is anyone paying attention to bug # 533135.  It affects beta1 and beta213:36
penguin42jimi_hendrix: Report a bug against xserver-xorg-video-ati13:37
jimi_hendrixwhere shall i report this bug13:37
penguin42jimi_hendrix: There is also a mailing list that deals with ati drivers that you could try13:37
jimi_hendrixpenguin42, and then what do i do13:37
penguin42jimi_hendrix: Just run ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati13:37
pac1533135 causes the install cd to hang on the 2nd screen (the one with the series of dots)13:38
simontolHi, my Lucid machine stuck at boot when fsck'ing disks13:38
pac1Its going to do that for a lot of people who have two monitors.13:39
penguin42simontol: Does it keep going back and redoing it?13:39

penguin42simontol: Yeh we've seen a few people on here with that, the fix is to manually fsck from an install/rescue CD13:41
penguin42JoshuaL: It seems to work on my i7, but it doesn't get shown by the normal cpu monitors13:41

JoshuaLpenguin42, cool i will look into that :)13:44
jimi_hendrixpenguin42, running ubuntu-bug, should i describe this as "shows screen corruption", or as other?13:44
penguin42jimi_hendrix: If it shows screen corruption then that's a fine title13:45
jimi_hendrixpenguin42, well what is screen corruption defined as?13:47
penguin42jimi_hendrix: Erm I'm not sure there's a dictionary definition, but just when it's obviously wrong as opposed to just an app saying the wrong thing; you might want to say 'odd purple flecks on ATI Mobility HD 3470'13:49
jimi_hendrixok13:49
penguin42simontol: What graphics card? Nvidia?13:49
simontolpenguin42: yes13:50

Tiibiidiii was affected by this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/477104 , so yesterday i recovered my ubuntu install, and updated to lucid... but the upgrade went somewhat wrong14:17
Tiibiidiiso i had to do a partial upgrade, after that i rebooted... the reboot wen fine (X broke, but that's due to the flgrx drivers),  so i updated the flgrx drivers and then rebooted in windows to purge the temporary boot.disk i created to rescue my old karmic install14:17
Tiibiidii but now it doesn't boots anymore but it "senses" grub... with this i mean: it shows the countdown, but after that if i press ESC or if i wait the countdown to finish the screen output disappears and the whole pc reboots14:17

persiaGood day.  I'm having an issue booting lucid on an lvm2 system: specifically it appears I need to run `modprobe dm_mod; lvm vgchange -a y` (or modprobe something else that depends on that) in initramfs for each boot.  I don't have to do this on another machine with a similar configuration.  Does anyone happen to know what I need to adjust to make this just work?14:51

cronosHey there folks, just installed lucid beta 2 and now my grub isn't working.  I de-selected grub during the installation as I already ahve multiple OSes on there and have grub already setup.  But now nothing is working HELP!16:23

cronosby the look of it there are many others who are suffering the same trouble with grub on lucid... yet no support here?!16:30
Dr_Williswhat OS is in charge of grub?16:30
cronoskarmic16:31
cronosit _was_16:31
coc0nutWhat do you mean in charge? =/16:31
Dr_WillisYou need to pick one OS to handle the bootloader..16:31
cronosI have OSX, Jaunty, Karmic, Lucid installed and Karmic is the OS that installed grub16:32
Dr_Willisin theory you can boot a live cd, chroot into the karmic install and rerun update-grub and it should see the other os's16:32
coc0nutoh right nevermind ^^16:32
eldoni16:32
cronosI'm livecd'ing now to chroot in and fix16:32
coc0nutI thought you meant in charge of development16:32
cronoscoc0nut: lol16:32
Dr_WillisI dont see the point in having 3 ubuntus's :) but i guess if ya got the hd space.16:32
coz_:)16:32
cronosDr_Willis: Jaunty is my main workspace16:32
Dr_WillisIf i have some usb hd's plugged in. ive seen update-grub see those and add boot entries for them16:33
eldoni've used 9.04/9.10 to reinstall grub several times, it is interesting that 10.04 beta 2 did not update grub to 2, i'm still on 1.5 from an update to my 9.04 instalation16:33
cronosKarmic is for playing with as is lucid16:33
cronosI'm also installing debian and arch16:33
cronos8-016:33
Dr_WillisHmm.. for grub1 - you may need to add the entries by hand..16:33
Dr_Willisgrub2 is much better at finding other os's16:34
eldonon that topic i'd reccommend using a 9.10 disk to install grub 216:34
Dr_WillisOr let Lucid handle the bootloader16:34

ErvHi I have encountered an issue while trying to activate nvidia restriced drivers18:14
Ervanyone have a second to help me out?18:15
ZykoticK9Erv, does jockey (aka Hardware Drivers) say "A different version of this driver is in use"?18:16
Ervyes18:16
Ervis this a common issue?18:16
ZykoticK9Erv, i think everyone with nvidia is currently getting that.  Are your graphics working properly?18:16
Ervwell my computer is running fine, but i really feel like my graphics card isnt getting used at all18:17
ZykoticK9Erv, if you rung "lspci -vnvn" and fine the VGA section, you can see what Kernel driver is in use18:17
Ervcompiz seems a little choppy18:17

kklimondaDanaG: well, it's nothing short of a miracle that you can boot it with lbm- modules at all :)18:34
kklimondaDanaG: in xorg-edgers there is a nice package called ppa-purge, use it18:34
timboy_penguin42, so what do you suggest I try next? amdcccle might work for all I know but settings don't persist after reboot and it won't apply anything without telling me to restart...18:35
DanaGah, but I was wanting the 3D support... what little there is.18:35
kklimondaDanaG: hmm.. then leave xorg.conf18:35
DanaGAnyway, does it still lack non-power-of-two support?18:35
DanaGOn nv17, that is.18:36
kklimondamaybe18:36

DanaGokay, purging edgers now.18:37
penguin42 <flush>18:37
DanaGAlso weird on that system: it still has the Karmic orange wallpaper at gdm.18:37
timboy_penguin42, i'm talking about the amdcccle gui tool18:37
DanaGhmm, does nouveau default to fpdither true?18:37
DDAZZASo how do I install/write  ubuntu 9.10 over ubuntu 10.4.?18:37
penguin42timboy_: Not sure what to suggest them; there's an aticonfig or something isn't there?18:37
DanaGhmm, if amdcccle is not working, are you sure xorg is actually using fglrx?18:38
timboy_penguin42, yeah haven't tried that seems pretty complicated18:38
DanaG/usr/lib/fglrx/bin/amdcccle18:38
penguin42timboy_: Only thing I can suggest18:38
timboy_DanaG, yes and amdcccle will "appear" to function and make resolution changes etc but any major changes it says to restart and changes don't persist after restart18:39
DanaGWeird.18:39
DanaGhmm, try it as root (gksu amdcccle)?18:39
timboy_DanaG, tried...18:42

sam92hi, i've got a question about the package "chromium-browser". if a user searchs the software center for "chrome", he doesn't find the browser most will be searching. i think the description of the package "chromium-browser" should be updated to mention "chrome" there so that users searching for that will find it.21:35
duffydackI installed clamav/clamtk and its saying there are no virus definitions?21:35
sam92is this a bug? where should i report this?21:36

=== DBO_ is now known as DBO
ZykoticK9sam92, i agree with you, although it's more of a "feature request" then an actual bug -- but Launchpad.net is where to file bugs - you should probably file under "software-center"21:38
sam92shouldn't i file it for the package "chromium-browser" because its description needs to be updated?21:39
ZykoticK9sam92, i doubt chromium-browser package has anything to do with the Ubuntu-Software-Center description, but maybe???21:39
sam92i thought the description in software-center is the one from the debian package21:40
ZykoticK9sam92, maybe I really don't know man.21:40
joaopintosam92, it is21:40
sam92ok, so i'll file a bug for chromium-browser. thanks21:41
joaopintosam92, if you believe the package should have a better description file a bug against it, not for software center ;)21:41
ZykoticK9joaopinto, would you agree that searching in Ubuntu-Software-Center for "chrome" would be a bug for chromium-browser then?21:41
ZykoticK9sam92, follow joaopinto suggestion then21:41
joaopintowell, it will be arguable I am sure there was some reason for the current description to ommit chrome21:42
