ninjaimaybe they could invest in some existing developers to release for linux platforms..?00:00
ninjaiI know this is probably comlpetely unrealistic, but imagine if canonical invested into blizzard or something or the sort and they released games liek diablo II and starcraft II on ubuntu.  That would be amazing.00:01
ninjaithe day that happens is the day I get rid of my windows box :)00:01
ZeldaHello everyone.00:01
ninjaihello00:01
ninjaimiss00:02
ZeldaI installed Adobe 9 reader. there is an icon on the desktop. I dont want that there, however when I put it in the trash, it also deletes the menu icon as well. Is there anything that I can do that will make it so I can delete the desktop icon and keep the menu?00:02
ZeldaI installed the app to /opt if that matters.00:03
ninjaireally?00:03
ninjaiweird00:03
ninjaiinstall it from the repository?00:03
ninjaiit's in there00:03
ninjaiI did it today00:03
ninjaiI also never got an icon on the desktop00:03
ninjaisudo apt-get install acroread00:04
ZeldaI cant. I have  a 64b.00:04
ninjaiits not in the 64b repo's?00:04
Zeldathere isnt one in the repos00:04
ali1234doh my desktop has vanished...00:04
yofeland make sure you have the partner repos enabled00:04
MariachiACHello. I have a question. Since i use the Orca screen reader I can use the update-manager. however, when i run "update-manager -d" I can hit the button to upgrade my version of ubuntu (Karmic) to Lucid. When pressing upgrade I lose speech. Can I change /etc/apt/sources.list file manually and run the update manager and upgrade this way or will I experience problems since the recommended way to upgrade is using "upgrade-manager -d"00:04
yofelZelda: it's in the partner repos. even for amd6400:05
ZeldaIll try it. Cause when I did that before it gave me an error saying that x86 stuff00:05
ninjaiZelda: I believe yofel is correct.. I have extra repo's added/enabled00:05
Zeldacause im on AMD6400:05
Zeldaok ill give it a shot.00:05
ninjaik00:05
ninjaihahah this is awesome, I've never seen this before... http://ubuntuforums.org/customavatars/avatar447468_3.gif00:06
yofelMariachiAC: a) what's speech? b) you can certainly use the debian method to dist-upgrade, but we don't support that00:06
Zeldahow do I uninstall the one that I put in /opt00:07
Zelda?00:07
ninjaidid you install with a deb package?00:07
Zeldano a bin00:07
yofelninjai: haha, that's err.... tunic? (tux/sonic)00:07
yofelZelda: just delete it from /opt I think00:08
ninjaiyofel: I would guess that's a fitting name... pretty awesome eh?00:08
ZeldaI just installed the one in the software center too00:08
Zeldaok00:08
ninjaiif he deletes from /opt/ there might be some things laying around... dont you think?00:08
MariachiACyofel: Orca is a screen reader to read the gnome desktop. So will I experience problems using apt-get dist-upgrade?00:08
Zeldawho knows.00:08
ninjailol00:08
ninjaiagreed00:09
ninjaiive never used it really00:09
ninjaii think i tried that program once00:09
Zeldawell I do here and there.00:09
yofelMariachiAC: well, I'm not sure, but it seems we only had orca in dapper, so I have no idea what will happen00:09
Zeldajust good to have00:09
bjsnideryofel, the nvidia-installer does not work with lucid and will not work with it. if that block is overridden the official word is that you're on your own00:09
MariachiACyofel: orca is i n the other versions of ubuntu. Its called gnome-orca00:09
MariachiACyofel I might be willing to give dist-upgrade a try. I'm guessing it won't work though.00:10
Zeldainteresting. It doesnt give me an option to delete it from /opt. I have to go in and delete all the subfolders and files first.00:10
ZeldaI'll just leave it there. who cares.00:10
yofelMariachiAC: ah, I searched for 'orca', we have gnome-orca 2.30.0-0ubuntu3 in lucid00:10
yofelbjsnider: ok, I wasn't sure, thanks00:11
endlerDoes anyone have kwin desktop effects working with the nvidia drivers using opengl?00:11
MariachiACyofel yes I'd like to have hte latest gnome, but currently I am only able to use the cd of beta2 to install on m y laptop. My laptop is an intel based machine while my desktop is an amd. My desktop does not boot the live cd of beta2 for some reason.00:11
Gartralhaving insane serious issues.. cannot boot safely into X period. all it does is loop the ready sound, and my cpu is burning at 60 C..00:11
ninjaiebdker: I do at home00:11
ninjaiendler*00:11
ZeldaGartral: get a new case.00:12
Zeldahaha00:12
endlerSince upgrading to lucid I've had to change to xrender to get compositing to work00:12
Zelda*kidding00:12
ninjaiendler: Ah, sorry.  I forgot I was in ubuntu+1, I'm running 9.10 at home.00:12
yofelendler: kwin  works fine here on my geforce 250GTS, maybe the driver installation didn't go right?00:12
endlerIt worked for me in 9.1000:13
GartralZelda: i was about to say.. my H.A.F.932 shouldnt have any isues00:13
yofelendler: what driver have you installed currently?00:13
endleryofel, are you using opengl or xrender for compositing00:13
yofelMariachiAC: that can have a bunch of reasons, can you try a daily image?00:13
yofelendler: let me check00:13
raphahmm00:13
endler195.36.1500:13
yofelgl00:14
raphaone thing that still doesnt work is file sharing among ubuntu pcs :-(00:14
endlerIt runs, but doesn't render properly00:14
raphai installed samba on every PC and shared the "Public" folder for guests, but when i click "network" on one of the other pcs i dont see those shares00:14
endleropengl works otherwise00:14
yofelendler: what happens if you try to run 'glxgears' or 'glxinfo' ?00:14
endlerBoth work fine.  Only opengl problems are with kwin00:15
yofelmaybe look for errors in ~/.xsession-errors00:15
ZeldaIM going to brb. Going to see if my menu icon disappears after I reboot. Brb.00:16
yofelyou can run 'tail -f ~/.xsession-errors' to see new errors as they come in, leave that running and try to enabel opengl00:16
yofelendler: ^00:16
endlerI don't think their would be any "errors" because it "works" but doesn't look right00:16
yofeldoesn't look right?00:16
MariachiACyofel I tried an image Tuesday. I can try another and see if its any different.00:17
endlerrenderings incorrectly ie. washed out, ureadable, goes to black when it shouldn't00:17
yofelMariachiAC: we had a few mountall and plymouth fixes in the last few days that can make a difference, if you already have an image you can just zsync it00:18
endleropengl is enabled and working in every way just fine except with for kwin effects00:18
ZeldaBack.00:19
ZeldaOk so now I have 2 menu icons. How do I delete the one that I installed via a bin?00:19
MariachiACI believe I have an image. How would I zscync it?00:19
Zeldathrough the terminal right?00:19
MariachiACyofel I believe I have an image. How would I zscync it?00:19
Kementariquestion: if I install the current beta of lucid, will I be able to seemless upgrade to the offical 10.04 release on the  29th?00:21
yofelMariachiAC: in the directory where you have the image run 'zsync <link_to_zsync_file>' like 'zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/lucid-desktop-amd64.iso.zsync'00:21
yofel!final | Kementari00:21
ubottuKementari: If you installed a Alpha/Beta/RC version of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) and have been keeping it up to date, then you are already running the latest version of Lucid. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a console.00:21
Zeldawould navigating to the /opt and then sudo apt-get rm adobe work?00:23
MariachiACyofel Ok I'll try that. brb.00:23
Zeldaor going into the package manager.00:24
yofelZelda: why apt-get? that's only for .deb packages, either  use the remove function of the .bin you installed adobe reader from or try something else00:24
yofelbut apt will never touch /opt in any way00:25
Zeldanew to ubuntu obviously. still trying to learn. whats the easiest way to remove it? I still have the .bin in the downloads folder.00:26
yofelerm, didn't the page you got the .bin from give any removal instructions?00:27
Zeldano. I downloaded it direct from Adobe.00:27
ZeldaI didnt see any.00:27
ZeldaIll look again00:27
yofelonly for .deb packages there is a defined procedure how to handle them in ubuntu, with .bin files it depends on how the .bin file works00:27
yofelZelda: maybe running the .bin with --help might tell you something00:28
Zeldawell, I wish I would have known that.00:28
endleryofel,  running tail I get errors about wobblywindows and coverswich effects not being supported00:29
yofelwtf? wasn't that compiz?00:29
endlerwas running with kwin in 9.1000:30
trash80iirc, the 9.10 is gnome00:30
trash80i am using 9.1000:30
yofeltrash80: there is kubuntu 9.10 too00:30
yofelendler: ok, kwin has them too, my mistake00:31
yofelendler: odd, I don't have wobblywindows enabled but I do have cover switch enabled and it works00:31
endlerYeah, wobblywindows is not enabled by default, so maybe it didn't get tested00:32
trash80yofel, and you dropped in a wrong channel00:32
yofelhm, enabling it seems to run fine00:33
yofeltrash80: this is the lucid support channel, he just said that he had kwin running in 9.10 after i made the wrong assumption that those effects were only part of compiz00:33
endlerget: Effect  "kwin4_effect_wobblywindows"  is not supported00:34
endlerBut doesn't say why00:34
LordKowwell great CDBS is ignoring my DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS in rules00:34
yofelendler: then I'm out of ideas, maybe ask again later if someone else had a better idea, or as a last resort ask in #kubuntu-devel if they have an idea00:36
lucivuendler: you are at lucid so you should have wobbly windows00:39
MTughanlucivu: Depends on the GPU in use.00:39
lucivuendler: unless your card/driver does not support it00:40
lucivuMTughan: sure00:40
endlerI'm using the nvidia 195.36.15 drivers00:40
endlerwith 9800gt00:41
Gartralhaving insane serious issues.. cannot boot safely into X period. all it does is loop the ready sound, and my cpu is burning at 60 C..00:41
lucivuendler: then it shud00:41
MTughanendler: What does "glxinfo | grep direct" say?00:41
endlerdirect rendering: Yes00:42
endler    GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,00:42
lucivuendler: am guessing you got the err msg when setting it up in systemsettings?00:43
lucivuendler: am using 1295.36.15 here with 7300 card and wobbly works fine00:44
endlerNo error message.00:44
lucivu*19500:44
lucivuendler: ? where did u get that message?00:45
bsharittI used to USB startup disk creator to make a 10.04 beta 2 usb bootable drive. It's taking about 45-60 minutes to actually boot to where I can start the install. Is that a know issue?00:45
endlerfrom xsession error log00:45
lucivuendler: when u move a window.. does it wobble?00:46
endlerkdesktop effects are unstable in general when set to opengl00:46
endlerwork fine with xrender.00:46
endlerbut opengl itself loads fine with no errors and works except for with kwin00:47
Gartralhaving insane serious issues.. cannot boot safely into X period. all it does is loop the ready sound, and my cpu is burning at 60 C..00:50
_stryk3rOkay so, I've been having problems with my wifi. It drops once and a while and the speed is nowhere near what it should be. How can I check for problems?00:50
lucivuendler: sorry but i just installed nv drivers and enable effects and that's it.  plain vanilla setup nothing fancy00:51
endlerWell, everything worked fine for me too with 9.10 and opengl kwin effects with nvidia 190 drivers00:52
Gartral_stryk3r: it sounds like firmware too me, what wifi card you have'?00:53
endlerWent bad after upgrade to 10.04 and nvidia 195 drivers00:53
_stryk3rGartral, I am not sure, Its just a toshiba laptop, how can I check?00:53
yofelGartral: if nobody can help you at the moment, you could ask in #ubuntu-bugs what to file a bug against, if nobody is there at the moment file a bug against the kernel with 'ubuntu-bug linux' so we at least get some hardware info and logs from your pc00:53
lucivuendler: not sure but nouveau* and other nv drivers maybe conflicting00:54
Gartral_stryk3r: sudo lshw | grep wire00:54
yofelif nouveau is loaded he should end up in low graphics mode as nvidia will fail to load00:54
lucivuendler: i have to get rid of nouveau*, all modalias* drivers00:55
yofellucivu: huh? nouveau shold get blacklisted by the nvidia driver now, no need to remove it00:55
_stryk3rGartral, http://pastebin.org/15294900:55
lucivuendler: all i have left is the xserver-xorg-video-nv and the NV proprietery drivers00:55
mrwespartial updates should be avoided, correct?00:55
yofelmrwes: unless you know what you're doing right00:56
lucivuyofel: why leave it there when you don't need it?00:56
endlerlucivu, no conflics with nouveau.  Drivers are working fine in general.  Only issue is with opengl/kwin.  I know people have been having problems with conficts, but that is is with getting the drivers to load properly at all00:56
yofelmrwes: see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=134343400:57
mrwesyofel: Ok, thought so, should work itself out in a day or so?00:57
lucivumrwes: there is no such thing as partial update..what does it buy you?  just the big Disaster00:57
mrweslucivu, sure there is00:57
yofelmrwes: usually yes, but see the forum post for the more accurate explenation00:57
lucivumrwes: like what?00:57
mrwesok, thanks00:57
Gartral_stryk3r: atheros.. it's a firmware issue..00:58
mrwesyoasif, interesting thread :)00:58
mrweser yofel  I mean00:58
mrweslucivu, Update Manager is reporting this:  Update Manager Offers a "Partial Upgrade"00:59
_stryk3rGartral, I see, and by firmware issue what do you mean exactly?00:59
lucivumrwes: wud you like a slice of your pizza while the rest are in the oven?00:59
yofellucivu: lol, that sounds ridiculous but actually makes sense :D00:59
mrweslucivu, nah..I prefer my pizza whole and would rather cut my own slices01:00
mrwes:)01:00
lucivumrwes: exactly..that's why 'partial update' is crap01:00
mrweslucivu, I understand the partial upgrade, I just was unsure of the risks of doing so01:00
mrwesunderstood01:01
funkyHatThe "broadcast accounts" window keeps popping up unrequested ⢁(01:01
funkyHatIt comes in pairs too01:01
yofelmrwes: it might remove necessary packages at random due to a wrong resolved package conflict and leave you with a possibly broken system01:01
funkyHatyofel: that's pretty unlikely though01:02
mrwesyofel, Ok, I remember coming across this with a previous beta upgrade01:02
yofelit might be unlikely, but it's *possible*, that's why I said: don't make a partial upgrade unless you know what you're doing01:02
mawstI like that Ubuntu theme for Empathy man I want it in blue though.01:02
mawst:D01:02
funkyHatI think it's just css and stuff, so you could probably modify it pretty easily01:03
mrwesRC is still on schedule for the 22nd?01:03
funkyHatYes01:04
mawstI'll look into that.01:08
mawstMust be Gecko then01:08
lucivuyofel: if you know then you would nver do partial..as simple as that pizza analogy..you just have to wait when all r ready01:09
mawstOr I wonder if it's something else01:09
mawstWebkit maybe01:10
marienzthe partial upgrades I got removed a wine-related font package and installed new kernels and wine.01:10
endleractually, I don't think I get any xsession errors.  The wobbly windows not supported thing is from switching back to xrender after opengl doesn't work.01:11
endlerxrender doesn't support it01:11
bjsniderjust do a sudo aptitude safe-upgrade instead of a partial upgrade01:11
endlerone of the reason I'd rather use opengl01:11
lucivuendler: so you are wobbly now?  :)01:13
endlerlucivu, no, I just meant that the message saying wobbly isn't supported was from switching back to xrender which works fine but just doesn't support wobbly01:15
ninjai_has anyone had problems with rhythmbox detecting certain mp3 players? Is there any way I can make it recognize my Cowon D2? Ubuntu finds and mounts it fine otherwise...01:17
joneslee85is gnome-icon-theme 2.30 missing?01:19
yofelseems so, maybe it was forgotten as we  don't use it anyway I think01:20
=== FFForever-Away is now known as FFForever
lucivuendler: do you have a custom xorg.conf?01:20
KajrosHas anyone tried Lucid on VMWare?01:21
FFForeverAnyone notice the network icon in the top right is missing with the last few rounds of updates01:21
lucivuendler: mine is just the plain one created by the NV install01:21
FFForever(system says nm-applet is running_01:21
yofeljoneslee85: check if there's a bug filed against it on launchpad01:21
yofeljoneslee85: and maybe ask in #ubuntu-desktop01:22
FFForeverAn instance of nm-applet is already running.01:22
endlerYou are using the NV driver and not the nvidia driver?01:22

BlkDrgnhello all, im having an issue that i was wondering if anyone else was having too, #ubuntu-bugs seems to be dead atm01:32
BlkDrgni downloaded and burned to disk the 10.04 beta 2 today, and i cannot boot into it, eithor by "try first" or "install".. was hoping someone else expierenced this too01:32
MTughanDanaG: You throw planes at stuff?01:34
Guest51098hey, anyway to get the same effect that gnome-session-remove gnome-panel01:35
Guest51098 does in 10.04?01:35
coz_Guest51098,  you mean gnome-shell?01:36
Guest51098I dunno, that's what I found that removes the menu bar01:36
Guest51098I'm trying to replace it because I use a dock01:36
coz_Guest51098,  I believe you can still use a dock with gnome-shell01:37
coz_Guest51098,  I havent tired recently though01:37
Guest51098sorry, I have the dock, but I want to get rid of the old menu bar01:37
coz_Guest51098,  the last panel you mean01:37
Guest51098the one that is on the top that allows you to access apps, admin, etc.01:37
Guest51098I think01:37
Guest51098to me it was the only panel01:37
coz_Guest51098,  right   the only way ... without breaking stuff is to install gnome-shell  for the ppa01:37
coz_I havent tried gnome-shell on lucid however01:38
coz_Guest51098,  or put the panel  on autohide01:38
Guest51098I have it on autohide but it still peeks through01:38
Guest51098it's kinda ugly :-P01:38
coz_and set background color to complete transparency01:38
coz_Guest51098,  yeah I know01:38
Guest51098lol01:38
coz_Guest51098, but removing the last panel has been a issue for several versions of ubuntu / gnome01:39
Guest51098I get gnome-shell from the software center?01:39
Guest51098yeah, the instructional i found was for 8.whatever01:39
coz_Guest51098,  I think there is a developer ppa for gnome-shell let me check01:39
Guest51098thanks, I also do not know what a PPA is -__-01:40
BlkDrgnanyone know where i can find help with 10.04 not booting?01:40
coz_Guest51098,  PPA = personal package archive01:41
coz_Guest51098,    http://ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/1801:41
robin0800BlkDrgn: check the cd md5 etc01:41
coz_Guest51098,  to run gnome-shell after installing   from either terminal with  gnome-shell --replace & disown  or from alt+F2  gnome-shell --replace01:42
Guest51098how do you make it so those commands run at starttime01:42
Guest51098also, any books that might be at a library on Linux/Debian/Gnome anyone knows of?01:43
holsteinThe following packages have unmet dependencies: gnome-shell: Depends: libgjs0 but it is not going to be installed01:43
coz_Guest51098,  i think you can set that in startup applications  not sure though01:43
BluesKajsorry folks ...forgot I was still logged in , started cleaning the KB01:43
holsteinE: Broken packages01:43
BlkDrgni downloaded direct from ubuntu.com  both x86 and x64.. neithor will boot in.. freezes during load with eithor the "try first" or the "install" options01:43
coz_holstein,  sudo apt-get install -f01:43
Guest51098I tried doing some terminal commands but they didnt work...01:43
holsteincoz_: what WHAT!01:43
* holstein trying01:43
mawstHow do I evoke that non free driver dialog?01:44
Guest51098I hate saying it because it seems like heresay, but I haven't been wowed by Ubuntu and found it very buggy so far01:44
Guest51098even when I ran 9.1001:44
coz_holstein,  you have missing dependecies   so you type   sudo apt-get install -f01:44
robin0800BlkDrgn: and have you checked the cd's?01:44
coz_Guest51098,  mm  interesting   I dont see many bugs  in karmic  but they are to be expected in lucid01:44
Guest51098like right now all of a sudden I can install updates01:44
BlkDrgnnot exactly sure what to look for01:44
Guest51098and I ran su in the terminal01:44
Guest51098someone on the forums told me my hardware wasn't good for Ubuntu01:44
holsteincoz_: i got the same result01:45
Guest51098it's fine for XP though01:45
coz_holstein,  mm01:45
Guest51098I just wanted a lighter OS01:45
holsteinits been that way for a few weeks01:45
Guest51098anyway, I have class so I'm out01:45
Guest51098thanks for all the help01:45
coz_mawst,   I believe the command sould be   /usr/bin/jockey-gtk01:45
coz_holstein,  do a sudo apt-get update  && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade  and also make sure you repositories are all open01:46
mawstThanks coz_01:46
gorgonzolajoin #ubuntu01:47
coz_mawst,  no problem01:47
coz_holstein,  did you use this link to try it? http://ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/18?dist=karmic  there are pacakges there for both lucid and karmic01:48

holsteini'll try that ppa coz_01:49
BlkDrgni cant find the 10.04 hashes anywhere01:49

EvilEpochI am running 10.04 64bit, and am getting a loader error about not finding the stdc++ lib, so i went to /usr/lib32 and symlinked the versioned lib to just libstdc++.so but the loader is still complaining01:50
EvilEpochis theres something im missing regarding 32bit vs 64bit perhaps01:50
coz_holstein,  if that doesn work try this ppa01:50
coz_https://launchpad.net/~vperetokin/+archive/unofficial-gnome-shell01:50
EvilEpochactually lemme try something01:51
EvilEpochahh indeed the EvilEpoch was mistaken and has figured it out01:52
holsteincoz_: i guess i could just poke around and see if libgjs0 is in that PPA01:52
robin0800BlkDrgn: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/01:52
BlkDrgnty01:53
BlkDrgniso md5 checks as same01:54
BlkDrgnand the "check cd for defects" menu option end clear too (already checked that)01:55
coz_holstein,  that second ppa is the one that works01:55
coz_holstein,  so remove the first one and add the repostories from the second link01:55

z0rtscroll down to alternate, it tells you what is different :)02:20

yofelthe alternate disk uses the text-mode debian installed instead of the live session installer02:23
yofel*installer02:23
BlkDrgni see.. so my issue might just be the installer and not the installation02:23
yofelBlkDrgn: and did you try a daily live disk?02:23
BlkDrgndaily live disc?02:23

ZeldaHey where do I get the other backgrounds for Lucid. I dont have the rocks and the frog pic anymore... they are different ones.02:32
ChogyDanHas the shutdown button been moved to the left?  It would seem more consistent that way02:32
denis-kChogyDan: no, how would it make it more consistent?02:32
denis-kthen you would end up moving the gnome menu to the right ?02:33
ChogyDandenis-k: both on the left, right?02:33
ZeldaI hate the way they moved the close buttons on the left.. its lame.02:33

Random832is there a way to get a "simulated" boot?05:32
Random832but anyway i couldn't even get any commands or any help within the actuall boot prompt05:32
Random832something about 'error: out of disk'05:33
Jordan_URandom832: Most likely you have a buggy BIOS that can't read past a certain point in large disks05:36
Random832Jordan_U: my boot partition is 384MB.05:37
Jordan_URandom832: And is it at the beginning of the disk (note that just being partition #1 doesn't actually guarantee that it's at the beginning of the drive).05:37

Random832http://pastebin.com/3UN7F0sr05:44
Random832is there anything i can do to run a self check without rebooting, to maybe get more informative errors?05:45
MistStlkrthe HCL on wiki.ubuntu.com does not list any AM3 motherboards... is that a matter of them just not being added yet, or is there a known issue with the AM3 boards in general?05:45
Jordan_URandom832: I have an idea why that is being added but it doesn't really matter, the root is set by uuid in the next line and you aren't even getting to the point where grub can read the grub.cfg.05:46
Random832is there any way for me to find out any information you can help me with?05:46
Jordan_URandom832: Try running this script: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/05:47
Random832do i run it inside the chroot or out of it (i'm on the livecd now)05:47
Jordan_URandom832: Either should work, I'd run it outside the chroot.05:48
Random832http://pastebin.com/Gd4bnYXM - you can ignore the LILO stuff - i installed that after the _first_ time GRUB didn't work, and didn't reformat the partitions when i reinstalled05:49
Random832(it's what i was using with karmic, and it actually managed to load the kernel into memory, but that hung after a "bios data check successful", for the record05:50
Random832any ideas?05:54
Random832hmm - i think i only actually tried booting grub when i didn't have /boot as a separate partition05:57
Random832(i don't expect anything, but it's worth a try to get a fresh recall of the error message if nothing else)05:57
Random832brb05:57
Random832well.... that was a shocking waste of time06:02
Random832that would probably have worked on Karmic, too, when I think about it06:02
* Random832 never considered that _grub_ might need a partition near the beginning of the disk - i assumed it was smart enough to not need the bios, so i only created it when i went to install LILO06:02
Random832you know, the installer should really detect the situation and create a /boot partition06:03

sean_I guess that I dont understand the difference between gnome or kde, I am assuming those are the enviornments in which the ubuntu distros run?  which is lucid?08:17
=== screen--x is now known as screen-x
sean_I tried that ddecator, it didnt work08:18

ddecatorsean_: then idk how to theme it unfortunately =\08:18
sean_oh, okay that makes sense now08:18
larsivisean_: gnome and kde are upper level view that both function over the same lower level lucid08:19
joaopintosean_, check some screenshots, you will not the difference between GNOME and KDE :P08:19
sean_okay well thanks...  How about making my games run normally instead of all choppy, can you help me with that issue, or is that a graphics card issue or something, cause I have a 2.8 ghz comp with 1.5 gig ram08:19
ddecatorgraphics driver08:20
joaopintosean_, are you using a 3d capable driver ?08:20
sean_well to be honest I have an onboard intel 865 chipset graphics card, and can't for the life of me find drivers for it08:20
joaopintooh, intel, that sounds choppy  for games08:21
tapan_chughddecator removing the cd does not help in anyway08:21
sean_So I guess that I have the lucid generic graphic drivers08:21
ddecatortapan_chugh: is it slow before gdm, or after?08:22
tapan_chughbefore gdm08:22
tapan_chughas soon as it bypasses the grub08:22

ddecator-dbg is only useful if you're trying to get a backtrace08:29

EagleScreenI think plymouth change should have been postponed to 10.1008:39

ddecatorerghezi: odd...are you trying to use compiz at all or just use the pre-set options in Appearance?08:40

ASULutzycountess: If you are making it to the login screen, and are able to login but are forcefully logged out, I don't think that's plymouth? Though I could be mistaken18:09
weganduASULutzy, http://paste.ubuntu.com/415668/18:10
Heliwrwegandu, I'm having trouble with what appears to be a memory leak as well - and I'm fully aware that disk caching is a good thing18:10
ASULutzywegandu: Yea, that looks about right. Gnome and X and all the other little bells and whistles use up a decent amount of RAM. If it really bugs you, you could always use Xubuntu or something like that18:11
ASULutzywegandu: Lubuntu too, though I'm actually not too familiar with what Lubuntu has or doesn't have when compared to Xubuntu or which is more "lightweight"18:11
Heliwrin my case free and top don't actually show the missing memory, the system just starts to sue swap like crazy after several hours and becomes unresponsive18:11

countessI am in a recovery shell18:16
holsteincountess: in the future, thats not a great idea18:16

weganduASULutzy, befoe it wouldnt use 25%.. just today its happening.. before it would max up to 7%.. and hardly even ever touch the swap..18:18
ASULutzywegandu: To me, the amount of ram currently in use doesn't really bug me one way or the other. If the system is sluggish, the system is sluggish, if it's not, it's not. With 2 GB of ram, you're probably okay to use regular old Ubuntu as long as you aren't trying to run VM's simultaneously and what not18:18
ASULutzywegandu: Hmmm, not really sure, beta software is beta and all ;)18:18

standardHello, I am trying Ubuntu Lucid and apparently the file manager doesn't unblock the partitions on my USB external drive, so that it's impossible for me to mount and use them. Any ideas on the cause?18:44
billybigriggerstandard, im taking a shot in the dark, try adding your user to the disks group18:44
billybigriggeralso i don't know if usb disks are mounted via fuse now, you might have to add your user to the fuse group18:45
thoegerHello Cannel; using Lucid, I cannot mount my external USB drive (ext3 formatted). When connected during a system upgrade, the disk suddenly appeared and worked perfectly. But now, I cannot mount it again.18:45
standardApparently the file manager keeps the disk "busy" and also when I try restarting the system it warns me that the file manager is still busy18:46
standardI tried to kill nautilus obviously without success18:46
seidl_anyone here got an idea what could cause gconf to set a property to read only (though there seems to be no entry in this /etc/gconf.mandatory thing)?18:47

thoegerSo, having seen that my drive can work just fine, I guess there's a setting wrong somewhere. I am in the fuse and disk groups...18:50
standard@thoeger the installation in my case is fresh and I haven't touched anything yet. I have just noticed my USB drive's light is constantly red, as if the partition was busy doing something, so the system won't let me mount it and access the data. It also mentions some error like gtk+ or something like that.18:54
thoeger@standard: My installation is fresh too (did it today)and my led on y drive is constantly blinking, but not getting any gtk errors though...18:55
avisthats the brakes.  sorry to hear that18:56
standard@thoeger I don't know what the cause is. It's just a pity because I can't access anything, even if the system actually sees the partitions on the external drive.18:57
=== bullgard is now known as bullgard4
standardubuntu unblocks the partitions only after restarting, and reblocks them at the login18:58
thoegerstandard: disk utility shows mine as unallocated space. Which is odd considering that after a restart of whatever service it was, it saw and mounted the partitions just fine...18:58
ASULutzyCould someone in here tell me what "sudo apt-get build-dep wesnoth" attempts to install?18:59
ASULutzyYou don't have to actually install the packages18:59
standard@thoeger for what I have been able to see here, the file manager goes crazy for some reason and keeps the drive busy19:00

fiveopNow trying 10.04 I have the problem, that unlike before I cannot seem to use the key sequence C-S-q for the purpose of switching a window to fullscreen mode. I configured it as stated under Keyboard Shortcuts and configured Close Window to disabled (since I don't use it) and still hiting C-S-q closes my windows. In fact configuring Toggle fullscreen mode to S-C-s instead (for example) doesn't work either, because then nothing happens. Any idea19:50

joaopintoLinuxGuy2009, please stop providing the wrong help21:19
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: How do you know it wont?21:19
Mianlinuxguy2009, is this a command or what?21:19
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: Wrong help, says you.21:20
joaopintoLinuxGuy2009, because reinstalling is not a proper way to fix a a problem resulting from an upgrade21:20
LinuxGuy2009Mian: APTonCD will backup all packages in the apt cache folder and you will not have to download apps installed from the repos.21:20
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: He has no system at all.21:21
joaopintoand anyway if he did a clean install, that will not remove his data21:21
joaopintoLinuxGuy2009, yes he does, which he can access from a livecd to diagonize21:21
joaopintoand which can partially boot with an older kernel21:21
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: Last time i did a clean install the old install goes away.21:21
nokia3510Mian, as jmichaelx said, you need to get more verbosity on startup messages21:21
joaopintoLinuxGuy2009, that is because you have selected to format the / partition, which is not required21:21
jmichaelxas joaopinto* said21:21
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: blind leading the blind21:22
jmichaelxbut i do concur ^-^21:22
joaopintoMian, just to flashback a bit, why did you got into the non bootable scenario ?21:22
LinuxGuy2009joaopinto: OMG he upgraded.21:23
Mianyes I just upgraded and upgrade finishes normally21:23
Mianwhen I restarted after the upgrade it didn't boot21:23

Miannokia3510, what exactly to check there?21:24

jmichaelxMian: i had issues after upgrading today on a dell mini 9, and had to select safe graphics mode, and then select reconfigure graphics21:26
Mianthis is last thing I see in verbose when I boot into recovery21:26
nokia3510Mian, what monitor do you have ?21:26
Miannokia3510, nothing chabged in hardware21:26
LinuxGuy2009Why would a monitor cause boot issues?21:27
Miannokia3510, it is a laptop dell inspiron 6400 and graphics card is intel21:27
jmichaelxMian: is it possible that your machine is booting, but you have no GUI?21:27

Mianjmichaelx, livecd boots fine21:27
jmichaelxMian: liveCD booting fine makes no difference21:28
nokia3510Mian, try booting in recovery using splash=verbose vga=0x31a21:28
Miannokia3510, how to add these options?21:28
jmichaelxMian: please try booting up, and seeing whether or not you can ctrl-alt-f3 to get a terminal prompt21:28

nokia3510joaopinto, I think so too21:31
nokia3510Mian, delete quiet and edit it to splash=verbose21:31
jmichaelxjoaopinto: i had a similar issue this afternoon, and am also seeing reports in the forums. it may just be with intel GPUs21:31
jmichaelxjoaopinto: i could not get GUI with safe graphics mode, either21:32
joaopintojmichaelx, I am refering to "rescue" mode which is a text mode21:32
jmichaelxjoaopinto: ok21:32
Miannokia3510, same happenned like booting into recovery mode. it stops silently after mounting hard drives21:33
joaopintoMian, and you don't get an interactive prompt, right ?21:33
jmichaelxhas he tried booting into 2.6.32-19. i see where one person was able to boot into that kernel, but not into later ones21:33
nokia3510Mian, when nothing we try here works, get back to live cd and do the propper chroot as instructed earlier, then do apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get autoremove on regular basis, to catch the latest updates21:34
Mianjoaopinto, yes21:34

BlaDe^Hi, since upgrading to 10.04 my wireless is extremely intermittent22:08
BlaDe^Quite frequently the symbol goes to a "loading" symbol, and every now and then prompts for the password (even though it is remembered), and then will continue with the loading sign22:08
BlaDe^i've tried /etc/init.d/networking restart that doesn't make a difference, even a system restart doesn't help. the only way to solve it is to power down the system then power it back up22:09
BlaDe^I have a windows partition and this doesn't occur on there, nor did it on 9.10 so it is definitely not a hardware issue22:09

MannequinHi. I've been playing with Ubuntu 10.04 Beta since 4 days ago. I've just run an 'aptitude safe-upgrade' and Firefox branding has been unexpectedly changed to Namoroka branding22:19
Mannequinshould I have expect that after just a safe-upgrade?22:20
BUGabundoMannequin: are you running a mozilla PPA ?22:20
BUGabundoMannequin: $ apt-cache policy firefox | pastebinit22:21
MannequinBUGabundo: no, I'm not22:21

BUGabundoI would say you are indeed running a ppa !22:24
BUGabundo:P22:24
MannequinBUGabundo: sorry then from my wrong answer, I didn't know22:25
BUGabundono prob22:25
BUGabundothat's why I asked for the facts :)22:25
MannequinI though that PPA were always manually added/configured22:25
BUGabundothey are22:25
bjsnideri suppose it magically added itself22:25
Mannequinah, yes, now that I recall, I've added it for installing Thunderbird22:25
Mannequinsorry, I totally forgot that22:26
Mannequinback to the original issue: after a 'safe-upgrade', the Firefox branding has changed to Namoroka  (and the blue logo)22:26
MannequinIs that expected? any trick to re-configure it so to use Firefox branding?22:27
MannequinI can live with the Namoroka branding... but this is not my computer, so I would prefer to use the FF branding, to avoid confusing other users22:28
BUGabundoMannequin: the ppa doesn't have branding22:28
BUGabundoMannequin: you either downgrade the firefox version to archive and turn off the ppa (meaning no TB updates)22:29
BUGabundoor you leave the PPA on, pin FF down, and it will not get updates22:30
BUGabundochoose one22:30
MannequinBUGabundo: ok, thanks for the clarification22:31
DanaGMannequin: also look into apt-pinning.22:31
DanaGThat'll make it so firefox can get updates from main archive, and thunderbird still get PPA.22:32
Mannequinaah, so probable the FF branded version installed before the 'safe-upgrade', it probable was the one that came bundled with Lucid Lynx, correct?22:32
Mannequinand after running the 'safe-upgrade', the FF branded version was just removed and replaced by the PPA version (aka Namoroka), correct?22:33
MannequinI wouldn't have expected that PPA removes other software, but of course, I just know a little about how this exactly works22:34
BUGabundoMannequin: it didn't remove anything22:35
BUGabundoit upgraded it22:35
MannequinBUGabundo: ok. Good to know.22:40
MannequinBut, then, why Thunderbird keeps its branding, even if coming from PPA?22:40
Miannokia3510, any progress?22:40
Mannequinor the Mozilla branding issue does not apply to Thunderbird?22:41
BUGabundono idea22:41
BUGabundoask micha in #ubuntu-mozillateam22:42
Mannequin(I'm supposing all this PPA installing an unbranded FF version -aka Namoroka- may be related to Mozilla protecting its brand)22:42
MannequinBUGabundo: thanks, I will22:42

nokia3510Mian, is this you Dell ? http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R158849&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=10430&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=21235023:17
ThaDocTreyI have a graphics driver issue that I need help with.  I just installed a Leadtek Winfast A250 graphics card and need drivers for it, can anyone point me in the right direction?23:17
nokia3510ThaDocTrey, apt-get install nvidia-current dkms23:17
Miannokia3510, I don't think so, mi dmidecode says version A09 and this says A1723:18
nokia3510Mian, your BIOS is A9, and need to get an update. If that's your laptop then this is your needed BIOS23:18
=== highvolt1ge is now known as highvoltage
mayfairmancan anyone point me in the right direction for uPnP share enabling?23:19
nokia3510Mian, there were plenty of bug fixes between A9 and A1723:20
Miannokia3510, I am not sure if this is my one. can you advise me pleae how to make sure?23:20
nokia3510Mian, what laptop do you have ?23:21
nokia3510Dell Inspiron 6400 ?23:21
nokia35106400=E1505 FWIW23:21
Miannokia3510, it is called dell inspiron 6400 but afaik, many different models are called dell inspiron 640023:22
nokia3510Mian, true, yet the BIOS is the same23:22
Miannokia3510, so, you recommend installing this bios? I am afraid it may break system completely if this was wrong23:23
nokia3510Mian, you can check your laptop version in many ways on dell'23:23
nokia3510s site, to make sure you're getting the right bios23:23
nokia3510Mian, I think this is your only issue now regarding Lucid, since the dpkg.log clearly shows a clean update23:24
ThaDocTreyNokia so will that give me the necessary drivers and make things work properly?  and not have to be in low graphics mode?23:24
nokia3510ThaDocTrey, that and apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -fuV23:25
Miannokia3510, but if something is failing due to a bios problem, wouldn't this be logged?23:25
nokia3510Mian, not necessarily23:25
ThaDocTreyokay, well I am doing an update at the current moment through the update manager, and then I will do those two steps, but that will fix my low graphics problems???23:26
mayfairmanmaybe if i give bit of background, I have a nokia n900 running deb flavoured maemo, it picks up my upnp media shared folders fine out of the box, but with those same folders sim linked into my ubuntu media folders it will not pick up unless I enable uPnP on ubuntu somehow, I dont really want to hack hack the phone to pick up sambe or nfs as its my phone and I want it stable so would rather set-up uPnP on the desktop23:26
mayfairmanthat should read pick up my win 7 upnp shares23:26
Miannokia3510, so I'll need to boot into windows to install this? I have no windows on my laptop23:26
DanaGMian: I think there are tools to do Dell BIOS updates from Linux.23:27
DanaGOr at least to create a FreeDOS bootable cd-image.23:27
nokia3510Mian, I'd advise that given your current situation.23:27
nokia3510DanaG, is right, but not applicabe now for you23:27
Miannokia3510, I have a windows on a usb stick and I boot it frequently, I'll try it23:28
nokia3510Mian, disable AV and any other resident programs prior to flashing23:28
Miannokia3510, I'll do thanks23:29
nokia3510Mian, elt me know how it goes23:29
nokia3510s/elt/let23:29

duffydacktypical ms, something that decides for you..saves you from that terrible task of thinking.23:31
yoasifanyone know of a less cpu hungry feed reader than liferea?23:32
mayfairmanwould Mediatomb be any good, gmediaserver threw up a bunch of errors on parsing23:32
