emgomezer00:00
emgomezokay, i guess it found the drivers on its own, or whatever00:00
emgomezbut the test page isn't printing00:00
ddecatorhpijs?00:00
ddecatoroh wait...00:01
emgomezno, it's still the foo driver00:01
ddecatorhpijs is for my all-in-one, my laserjet is foo =p00:01
emgomezokay00:01
emgomezwill apt-get remove hpijs work?00:02
ddecatorif you don't want it00:02
emgomezwell00:03
emgomezi mean00:03
emgomezi seem to be worse off now00:03
emgomezand the only thing that's really changed is that i installed hpijs00:03
emgomezbecause now nothing is printing00:03
ddecatorthat -shouldn't- cause any issues though..00:03
emgomezarguably, i suppose i'm just back to where i was when this printer came out of the box in february00:04
emgomezyou're right, it shouldn't00:04
emgomezbut00:04
emgomezapparently this entire problem was either precipitated by the fact that the printer ran out of paper in the middle of a job or because i switched my graphics cards drivers to a proprietary one to get compiz to work00:05
emgomezboth of those things seem equally unlikely to cause this problem00:05
emgomezbut00:05
emgomezthose are the only two things that changed00:05
ddecatorespecially the graphics driver, haha00:05
emgomezyeah, i know00:05
emgomezbut really00:05
emgomezthis always happens to me00:05
ddecatorprinters randomly stop working sometimes00:05
ddecatormight not be related at all00:06
ddecatorhm...00:06
emgomezthings mysteriously break and i can never fix it on my own and it pisses me off00:06
emgomezyeah, i suppose00:06
emgomezthe joys of printers00:06
ddecatori'm trying to see if there are any bug reports about this..00:06
ddecatorhm, this is a possibility: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/40724400:08
ddecatorso i guess run 'hp-plugin -i'00:08
emgomezalrighty00:10
emgomezDownloading firmware to device hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1006?serial=AC2F78F...00:12

emgomezDone.00:12
ddecatoris the printer plugged into the usb right now?00:13
emgomezyes00:15
ddecatoridk if it's supposed to be or not...00:16
ddecatorcan you look at the last comment on that bug report? (er, second to last...the one with instructions)00:17
emgomezyeah, i saw it00:17
ddecatortry the instructions on there and see what happens for you00:18
emgomezi did something like that last night, selecting the usb option00:18
emgomezbut i'll try it again00:18
emgomezi'm not really given an option to select the driver00:20
emgomezbut it selects xqx anyway00:20
ddecatoras long as it selects the foo driver00:21
emgomezyeah, but it's not printing00:21
ddecatorany errors?00:21
emgomezthe error light isn't on00:21
emgomeznope00:21
ddecatoris there other stuff in the job queue?00:22
emgomezthe print queue says it's "Processing"00:22
emgomeznope00:22
emgomezand now the print queue just closed out00:22
ddecatorgreat...00:22
emgomezand says there's no outstanding jobs00:22
emgomezlol, oh this is so ridiculous00:22
ddecatordoes the printer show up as connect in Printing?00:22
ddecatorconnected*00:23
emgomezyeah, it did00:28
emgomezbut i installed it and i'm trying this again, which worked a few months ago: http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/00:28
emgomezsigh00:29
emgomezbut no longer, apparently00:29
ddecatornow what's happening?00:30
emgomeznow we're back to the same "Unable to write 8192 bytes to the printer!"00:30
emgomezerror00:30
emgomezin the printer manager or the dialog if i try to print something00:30
emgomezbut last time it would print anyway00:31
emgomezbut it doesn't seem to be this time00:31
ddecatorcancel all jobs, disconnect and reconnect the printer, then try again00:31
emgomezokay, error light goes back on, i open the close the printer, the error light goes away, the unable to print 8192 error still shows up and no printing is happening00:33
emgomez*open and close00:33
ddecatorhuh...00:34
emgomezand now a "printer may not be connected" message just came up00:34
emgomezalthough it is00:34
ddecatoris your system fully up-to-date?00:36
emgomezunplugged/replugged, the may not be connected error shows up again, i cancel out the job, the printer status is "busy, will retry in 5 minutes..." even though there's no job00:36
emgomezyeah00:36
emgomezemg@che:~/foo2zjs$ sudo apt-get upgrade00:36
emgomezReading package lists... Done00:36
emgomezBuilding dependency tree00:36
emgomezReading state information... Done00:36
emgomez0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.00:36
emgomezemg@che:~/foo2zjs$00:36
ddecatorthis one report says to run 'sudo rmmod usblp' although i honestly don't know what it will do00:37
emgomezhuh, i just ran hp-check -t again00:39
emgomezand i got this, which is new: Summary of needed commands to run to satisfy missing dependencies:00:39
emgomezsudo aptitude install --assume-yes cupsddk cupsddk-drivers00:39
emgomezsudo aptitude install --assume-yes policykit policykit-gnome00:39
emgomezso i installed all of that00:39
ddecatorany effect?00:41
emgomezi'm installing it again00:41
emgomezrmmod apparently removes modules from the kernel00:41
emgomezi dont really know what that means but it sounds kind of scary00:42
emgomezwheee00:42
emgomezthis time i got "unknown error 1018"00:42
emgomezat least that's new00:42
emgomezi guess00:42
ddecator-sigh- i'm at a loss...00:47
ddecatorthe only thing i can think of is disconnecting the usb, turning off the printer, deleting the printer in Printing one more time, then turn the printer on, connect the usb, and let it try autosetup again...otherwise idk00:48
emgomezme too. i just tried running hp-setup from the terminal, and i got a device communication error 5012, which i feel like i got before00:48
emgomezi'm not sure that autosetup is working anymore, to be honest00:50
ddecatorit should =\00:51
emgomeznope, only manual config i think00:55
emgomezi tried forcing  a firmware update before a manual config and it said that no such supported device existed00:56
emgomezand then i tried after i set it up manually and i got: error: Device busy: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1006?serial=AC2F78F00:57
emgomezerror:  Unable to communicate with device or device is in an error state.  Please check device setup and try again.00:57
ddecatordoes that happen if you turn the printer off and on?00:58
emgomezwhile keeping the usb plugged in?00:58
emgomezhahahaha00:59
emgomezi just shut it down and a message popped up: test page has completed printing!"00:59
ddecatorwe wish, haha01:00
LzrdKingmy VGA monitor keeps shutting off and it won't wake up; sometimes unplugging either the power or the vga cale helps, sometimes not, sometimes it just wakes up on its own.  DPMS is turned off.  how can i make it stay on?  my DVI monitor does not have this problem (the are the same model monitor, switching the inputs helped for about 5 minutes)01:50
ravibnHi! There is something I need to fix for me to enable to login from console. When I booted ubuntu from recovery mode and went to logon from console it kept on asking for the username & pwd How can I fix this ?02:03

GotQuestionsHello02:57
GotQuestionsAlright, so I have a few questions about installing ubuntu02:57
haywireSo you want to install ubuntu on an ole '98 machine?02:57
GotQuestionsYep!02:57
GotQuestionsThe machine refuses to connect to the internet right now, because of a mix of it being over ten years old & virus covered02:58
haywireI'm a beginner myself, but will try to help, and pls if there is someone else here, plz chime in!02:58
GotQuestionsI'm on a mac right now, but do have access to a windows xp machine if necessary02:58
GotQuestionsThank you haywire :)02:58
haywireI have installed xubuntu here on some of my older machines...it is sort of a stripped down version more suited for older machines with low system requirements.02:59
GotQuestionsNice, I'll search for it now!02:59
emgomezi'm here too and i can try and help but i'm kind of a beginner too02:59
swoodyHello GotQuestions and haywire :)02:59
swoodyand emgomez :)02:59
emgomezhi swoody03:00
haywireGotquestions: Swoody is awesome and helped me with a desktop login problem!03:00
GotQuestionsHi swoody, thanks for offering your help :)03:00
GotQuestionsNice!03:00
swoodyGotQuestions: was there anything in particular you were curious about, or just looking for a good bit of advice for the new install? :)03:00
GotQuestionsWell, I really know nothing about installing OSs03:00
GotQuestionsso basically everything!03:00
GotQuestionsDo I download Xubuntu on my mac?03:01
GotQuestions*to03:01
swoodyGotQuestions: well my friend, you've come to the right place :)03:01
swoodyGotQuestions: you need to download the .iso file to any computer that you can burn a disc from03:01
GotQuestionsAlright, do I need any special burning software or just regular burning?03:02
swoodyGotQuestions: you need to make sure it has the option to 'Burn .iso' or 'Burn disc image'03:02
swoodywe don't want the audio or data options here :)03:02
GotQuestionsAh! I'll check if  I can download Nero burning ROM03:03
swoodyGotQuestions: here's a couple guides that may be of use to you as well:03:03
swoodyhttps://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/installation-guide/index.html03:03
swoodyhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation03:03
swoodymore specifically, this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall03:04
GotQuestionsswoody: thank you so much03:05
swoodyGotQuestions: np, and obviously don't be afraid to ask questions freely in here :)03:06
haywireswoody: I got a stupid question about this (xchat) utility itself...how do your replies to me (etc.) end up in red?  Do you have control over that?03:07
emgomezhaywire, it's because swoody is typing your handle03:09
emgomezand the default is for it to alert when someone says your name03:10
haywireegomez: so is my reply like this red on your screen?03:10
emgomezwell, it would have been, except my handle is eMgomez03:10
emgomezbut what you can do is type the first or second letters and then hit tab03:10
emgomezand the handle will automatically pop up, assuming you typed in enough letters03:11
haywiresri sri typo... and the answer was so simple it eluded me... beating head on desk now...03:11
emgomezhaha, it's okay03:11
swoodyhaywire: yes, it's called hilighting :)03:11
emgomezi'm sure you can fiddle in settings and disable the alert if you don't want to be bothered03:11
haywireemgomez, no, it's very helpful, i think03:11
swoodyhaywire: you can setup other terms to hilight in the settings of xchat, like "HayWire" or "hay wire", etc.03:11
haywireand the tab tip, too!03:12
emgomezright, or just any other particular words that you might want to know when people are discussing03:12
emgomezswoody, if you're in a helpful mood, can i ask you to take a look at the syslog for my printer? it's here: http://pastebin.com/prVt1YGr03:13
haywireswoody: Thanks again for steering me to the help forums to resolve my .gdm issues here... now I got my autlogin working, GRUB is dual-booting me to xp home or xubuntu, display is configured for its 1360x768 native display, life is good.03:13
emgomezoops, here was my message before you peered out: swoody, if you're in a helpful mood, can i ask you to take a look at the syslog for my printer? it's here: http://pastebin.com/prVt1YGr03:14
emgomezddecator was super helpful and we worked at it for a couple hours but didn't manage to find a solution. and i'm in the middle of downloading the iso to see if the printer works with the livecd03:15
=== swoody_ is now known as swoody
swoodyemgomez: you have Ubuntu installed already?03:17
emgomezoh, yeah03:17
emgomezi think i've been using it for three years now03:17
emgomezbut i'm still not very good at all at fixing things when they break03:18
swoodyemgomez: gotcha. And your printer doesn't work right now?03:18
emgomeznope03:18
GotQuestionsalright, obscure question for mac users:03:18
swoodyemgomez: ok. Did you install any drivers for it, or have you been using plug-n-play up until now?03:18
GotQuestionsActually, proabably any users03:18
GotQuestionsI'm putting the disk image onto the program Burn03:19
GotQuestionsShould I 'mount' it?03:19
swoodyGotQuestions: are you just burning the image to a CD?03:19
GotQuestionsYes, I want to use the CD as a boot disk03:19
GotQuestionsSo I'm not sure if I mount it or not?03:19
swoodyGotQuestions: then no, you don't need to mount it, just burn it to disc :)03:20
swoodyunless Mac is different about that...03:20
swoodyhumm...03:20
GotQuestionsswoody: Once again, you're the man03:20
emgomezswoody, yes, definitely. when i first bought it, plug n play didn't work. it's an HP laserjet P1006, which caused problems for some people. i followed the instructions here (http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/) to use the foo drivers and the printer worked great until two days ago03:20
GotQuestionsI doubt it would be different.... (I hope)03:20
GotQuestionsWe shall see :)03:20
swoodyemgomez: did anything change when it stopped working? Upgrade versions of Ubuntu, change drivers, anything out of the ordinary?03:21
emgomezswoody, when it ran out of paper in the middle of a print job. i couldn't clear the error light/make the printer believe it had paper again. i removed and then upgraded hplip, which made it briefly work again today, until we installed hpljs, partially because even with the hplip reinstall, when i would print a pdf, it would print the first page of the document and then stop and the error light would go on, until i opened03:22
emgomezup the printer and closed it again (no jam or anything, just an open/close) and then it would print the rest of the document03:22
emgomezthe only two things that happened were the running out of paper in the middle of a job, which had actually never happened before. and i changed my graphics drivers to a proprietary one to get compiz to work03:23
emgomezalso, perhaps solar flares.03:23
emgomezor an act of god03:23
swoodygotcha :)03:23
swoodyemgomez: did you install the HPlip GUI?03:27
swoodytry it with: sudo apt-get install hplip-gui03:27
swoodythen run it: gksu hp-setup03:28
emgomezshould i remove the existing hplip first?03:28
swoodyemgomez: you could if you'd like. I'm not sure if it will interfere or not...03:28
swoodyluckily all my printers have been plug-n-play :/03:29
dvz'lo all03:29
GotQuestionsWell that didn't work03:29
emgomezyeah, i have terrible luck with peripherals03:29
emgomezi must have been cursed at birth03:29
swoodyGotQuestions: what didn't work out?03:29
GotQuestionsWhen I started the computer, I went into BIOS and booted from CDROM first, then from E03:30
GotQuestionsAnd neither worked :(03:30
GotQuestionsThe booting with the disc in03:30
swoodyemgomez: well be thankful it's at least an HP. It could be much worse in Linux ;)03:30
swoodyGotQuestions: any errors from BIOS when trying to boot from CD?03:30
GotQuestionsJust said Boot From CDROM: Failure ...03:31
GotQuestionsThe ... was included in the error message03:31
emgomezswoody i got a "Firmware download to device failed."03:31
swoodyGotQuestions: what architecture is your computer- x86, amd64?03:31
swoodyemgomez: hmm...03:31
GotQuestionsNo idea, how do I find out?03:32
GotQuestionsSwoody: ^that was to you03:32
swoodyGotQuestions: well, which version of Ubuntu did you download, the default 32 bit version?03:32
ZeRoDeAtH50435is there a software for linux like visio 200303:33
GotQuestionsYes03:34
GotQuestionsI was thiking about downloading xubuntu, but didn't because I already had ubuntu downloaded and it would be another hour03:34
GotQuestionsit's the server version though03:34
GotQuestionsWhen I put on UBUNTU, I dragged it in as a disc image03:36
GotQuestionsThat was correct, right?03:36
mika__Can I erase a swap partition while logged into Linux?03:36
swoodyGotQuestions: yeah, you need to burn it as a disc image. Have you tried booting from that CD in another computer?03:37
GotQuestionsNo- I can back out as it starts if it works, right?03:37
swoodyGotQuestions: or I would try re-burning the image again, this time changing the burn speed to as slow as it will go. This will ensure that any errors while burning are kept to a minimum03:37
swoodyGotQuestions: yeah, you can quit any time :)03:38
GotQuestionsThanks, I'll try it & pray the parental units don't get angry :/ ;)03:38
swoodyGotQuestions: well if you just boot from the disc, and don't go through the *entire* install process, you're not going to make changes on the computer :)03:39
swoodyso no worries there03:39
mika__This is going to be a major hassle. I think I have to reinstall Windows and Ubuntu both... :(03:41
haywireswoody and Gotquestions:  I think he may have done what I did one time... simply copied the .iso file onto the CD... that will not work.  GotQuestions, can you look at the CD you just burned and tell us what fileneame(s) you see there?03:41
swoodymika__: what's the matter?03:42
swoodymika__: and yes, you can shutoff your swap, and then remove the partition....03:42
swoodyI would check first to make sure you're not using any of the swap: free -m03:42
swoodythen if you're not, you can turn off the swap partition with: sudo swapoff -a03:43
mika__Half of my hdd is unallocated, and Disk Utility won't let me create a NTFS partition on it. I was saving that space for a partition which both Windows and Linux could use.03:43
mika__It says there are too many primary partitions.03:43
swoodymika__: how many do you have right now? You can only have 4 on a hard drive03:44
swoodyemgomez: not finding too much help with this one :/03:44
swoodyemgomez: the only things I've come across as from HP: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html03:44
mika__I started with an empty drive, and installed Windows first. Then I installed Linux, with a separate swap partition.03:45
swoodyemgomez: also: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install_wizard/index.html03:45
mika__But apparently Windows 7 automatically creates a 100 mb boot partition as well.03:45
stlsaintswoody the juggler03:45
emgomezswoody, i actually caved in and bought the stupid warranty for 15 dollars when i bought this. i have a feeling this is a hardware problem that's not allowing the firmware to update appropriately. i'm going to see if the tech people will cave and replace it03:45
swoodystlsaint: :)03:45
swoodyemgomez: have you tried this printer on other computers or OS'es?03:45
emgomezWELL, funny you should ask03:46
emgomezbecause this laptop was supposed to be a dual boot, but vista apparently freaked out about being dual booted03:46
emgomezand then i have a little netbook that runs netbook remix03:46
swoodymika__: ah, I see. Then yeah, you'd need to do as I mentioned above, but if you don't have enough RAM to run your system without swap, the 'solution' may be a bit more in-depth03:46
emgomezso i'm flying windows free right now03:46
emgomezi'll go try the netbook though03:47
swoodyemgomez: well that's very good to hear :)03:47
mika__If I remove the swap partition, which is a logical partition, can I then use the empty space to create another swap AND a data drive?03:47
swoodymika__: so you're going to have two versions of Windows and Ubuntu installed?03:48
mika__No, just one of each, and a separate drive just for data that both can access.03:48
swoodymika__: or are you just going for Win 7 and Ubuntu?03:48
swoodymika__: seperate drive, or *partition*?03:48
mika__Partition03:48
mika__sorry.03:49
swoodymika__: np :)03:49
swoodymika__: well, IIRC there's also a way to install Win7 without using two partitions...03:49
swoodythat way you can have one Windows, one Ubuntu, one swap, and one shared data partition03:50
swoodymika__: or if you'd rather leave Win 7 how it wants to install, you'd probably have to lose the swap :/03:50
mika__Hmm....03:51
mika__Can Ubuntu use the / partition for swap?03:51
swoodyno, it has to be seperate :/03:51
mika__Damn...03:52
mika__If I remove the Windows installation, and then reinstall it, it's going to overwrite the boot configuration...03:52
swoodywe could go with extended partitions here, but I *think* Ubuntu at least needs it's /boot as a primary...03:53
swoodymika__: yeah, then you'll just need to re-install Grub, but that's not hard with a liveCD03:53
mika__I may have to do that, much as I dread to...03:54
hgd4thI'm trying to get my built-in webcam recognized by my laptop, and I think I have to "clone a repository" (I have no idea what this means). how do I do that?03:55
mika__Since Ubuntu always sniffs any existing OSs and is kind enough to add them to its boot config, I've never messed with grub03:55
mika__Windows just plows right over everything...03:55
swoodymika__: it's Windows, that's what they're good at ;)03:55
ZeRoDeAtH50435what is a alt for visio in ubuntu03:56
mika__Is there a difference between a /temp and a /swap partition?03:56
swoodywith how demanding their OS is, I'm suprised so many people pay tons of $$ for it :/03:56
swoodymika__: yes, your /temp is where data is stored that is needed temporarily by your system, swap is for running programs/apps that require a good amount of info to be at hand. So the two are completely different in how they work and what they're used for03:57
swoodyswap (basically) is extra memory, just like the pagefile on Windows03:57
mika__Zero, I don't know the answer to that one, but you should check out alternativeto.net; you can look up an app in Win/Linux/Mac and see what alternatives there are, their ratings etc.03:57
mika__In that case I'll be sure to leave the swap alone, or at least recreate it.03:59
mika__Thanks for your help, Swoody.03:59
swoodymika__: well, like I mentioned, if you have enough RAM to run without it, it's not absolutely neccesary, but it is good measure to have one :)04:00
swoodymika__: ok, new plan :)04:00
mika__Yeah, I'm going to do some video editing and image manipulation, so it's best to have it there just in case.04:00
swoodymika__: use the partition that Ubuntu is installed in now, and create an extended partition with it. You can then create root, home, swap, and any other partitions you'd like for Ubuntu as extended ones :)04:01
swoodythen you'll still have 2 primary partitions for Win7, and one for data04:01
Vantraxmika__, should look like [Windows][{/}{Swap}{Home}][Data]04:01
Vantraxchange your existing ubuntu partition into an extended partition, then create the logical partitions (usually root swap and home) inside it04:02
stlsainthey whats the commadn to find out info about wireless card?04:02
stlsaintis it iwconfig?04:03
Vantraxyes04:03
swoodystlsaint: ifconfig or iwconfig04:03
Vantraxif config gives general network info04:03
Vantraxiwconfig gives wireless specific info04:03
hgd4thcan anyone help me with this repository thing?04:03
Vantraxsorry, i missed what repository thing it was04:04
hgd4thI'm trying to get my built-in webcam recognized by my laptop, and I think I have to "clone a repository" (I have no idea what this means). how do I do that?04:04
mika__Can the Ubuntu root partition be changed from primary to logical (if that's even doable) without ruining the installation?04:04
Vantraxno idea what that means either...04:04
Vantraxmika__, no04:04
stlsaintclone a repo....i think you are confused about something04:04
stlsainthgd4th: ^^04:04
hgd4thhmm so how do I make use of whatever is on this website: http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/04:05
stlsainthgd4th: are you aware what a repository is?04:05
hgd4thno04:05
swoodymika__: some more info on extended partitioning :) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition/ExtendedPartition04:05
Vantraxmika__, you can however back up the content of your root partition with something like clonezilla then restore it into the new partition04:05
mika__Would it retain all my apps and AWN settings etc?04:05
stlsainthgd4th: in a nut shell the repos is where you download all your software from in synaptic package manager04:05
Vantraxother options are symantec ghost, and acronis truecopy04:05
Vantraxmika__, yes04:05
swoodyVantrax: rsync couldn't do it? Like how you can move other partitions?04:06
Vantraxswoody, boot track issues04:06
swoodyah, gotcha :)04:06
Vantraxrsync just does raw data04:06
Vantraxrsync is what you would use just to copy your home drive for example04:06
hgd4thstlsaint__, so do you know how I could install this: http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/04:06
stlsainthgd4th: in that site you are only grabbing the various files in accordance with what the subject is...04:07
emgomezswoody, alright, printer tried on a second system, fairly identical failure. it just acts as if no data was sent to it and eventually the system returns a "printer may not be connected" message, even though it is physically connected04:07
stlsainthgd4th: running that command: hg clone http://bitbucket.... will get you a dir with various files in it i believe04:07
Vantraxmika__, those technologies create a copy of your partition data and allow it to be restored later. You will likely have to do a grub-update from the liveCD after restoring so that grub can find its new partitions and update04:07
swoodyemgomez: that is odd... Since the netbook is fresh, and doesn't have any drivers installed, have you tried installing hplip on it?04:07
swoodyemgomez: like the HP site outlines04:08
stlsainthgd4th: if you feel safe with that site than you can run the command in your terminal04:08
hgd4thI just tried that but it returned "hg: command not found"04:08
mika__but won't that backup be lost when the partitions are removed and redone?04:09
hgd4thI was linked to that site from here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams it said the driver on that site "supports many VAIO" webcams04:09
Vantraxhgd4th, you might have to do sudo apt-get install mercurial before hg will work04:09
emgomezswoody, well, right. that's what i did. i plugged it in, hoping for autosetup but i got the message "this printer requires proprietary drivers, please run hp-setup" so i installed the whole hplip shebang, using the official hp drivers but no dice. then i tried the foo drivers. still nothing04:09
Vantraxmika__, it makes a copy onto another device as a file04:10
Vantraxso you can copy the drive to an external HDD for example04:10
Vantraxand it would have a disk image file containing that partition04:10
Vantraxmika__, google symantec ghost and look at the explanations of how it works04:10
stlsainthgd4th: kk, that command will prolly download the driver than04:11
Vantraxemgomez, have you looked at http://127.0.0.1:631/04:12
Vantraxand tried setting it up through there with a generic postscript driver04:12

Vantraxor dmesg to show you everything that the kernel detects04:14
Vantraxhgd4th, make sure you dont have update, or synaptic running04:14
swoodyhgd4th: do you have update manager or Synaptic open? You need to close those for now to use another package manager04:14
emgomezVantrax, i'm not really sure which driver to pick for a generic postscript driver04:15
emgomezor, to be honest, what to do with it once i find it04:15
Vantraxif you go to add a printer04:16
Vantraxyou will get to the point where you can choose a driver and there will be an option for a generic driver or postscript driver04:16
Vantraxthats the cheap and dirty way to get you up and running, it wont give you advanced features but you should be able to print04:17
Vantraxemgomez, http://127.0.0.1:631/admin click the add a printer button to get started04:17

talsemgeestSiReN: Which settings are you talking about? If you run "sudo update-grub" you should have all the boot options on your new boot menu10:31
SiReNwell I first uninstalled grub 2, 'cause that was just abit much for me, then followed a tut on how to add a windows boot with grub (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How_to_dual-boot_Ubuntu_and_XP_after_installing_them_separately_on_two_HDs), this worked brilliantly and I could see and boot into windows, however when i booted back into ubuntu and installed grub 2, sudo update-grub, the entry for windows wasn't there...10:35
SiReNare there any tut's for adding a windows boot for grub 2 that I missed (ie one that i would understand...)10:38

drubinmalev: WOW lazy22:56
malev:D22:57
emgomezdrubin, SO i guess the first question is, do you know of a good resource or guide written on how to run a server for people who have never done it before?22:58
phillwemgomez: what ever server you wish to use, make sure that you use tasksel to do it :-)22:58
drubinemgomez: depends what you want to use the server for22:58
emgomezdrubin, second question is probably if i can run the ubuntu server version with individual windows consoles22:59
drubinI don't like tasksel, I by mistake removed my whole desktop enviroment with it22:59
emgomezphillw, no idea what that means =P22:59
emgomezdrubin, basically, i'm volunteering for a legal services office, a nonprofit. they have no tech support whatsoever... except for me, apparently. everyone runs virus-ridden windows machines22:59
phillwemgomez: do not used apt-get this, apt-get that22:59
csousai've got a dual boot win7/ubuntu in a HP G7000, ubuntu doesn't connect to my wireless router...must i configure wireless manually?23:00
phillwas to securing a server read http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=104673823:00
emgomezdrubin, so, basically i need 1. to route all of the internet traffic through the server to avoid viruses, 2. provide everyone with a networked drive to store office files on for everyone's use, 3. route the printers and scanner through the network so all of the desktops can print to any of the printers or get scans from the scanner23:01
drubinemgomez: Ok every thing on that list makes sense except viruses23:01
phillwemgomez: it's a bit more involved than you may think. If you want top just run a 'local' server for you to practice on, that can be easily added, if you want  server the the bad ol' WWW has access to, it is a whole different ball game23:01
emgomezso, do i sound totally insane, considering that i've never in my life gotten a server up and running?23:01
emgomezsigh23:01
malevcsousa, but you can see the wireless net in ubuntu?23:02
emgomezi was afraid it was going to be more complicated than i had hoped23:02
csousano23:02
drubinsimply having a server infront of your connections isn't going to filter traffic and doing viruses filter is some heavy heavy duty stuff23:02
emgomezdrubin, why don't the viruses make sense, exactly?23:02
emgomezwell23:02
phillwemgomez: yup, you do. learn it on a local system & then harden your system23:02
csousajust etho23:02
drubinemgomez: Meaning you would have to scan every single packet before it goes to the client23:02
malevcsousa, oh! then you don't have propertly installed your wireless borad23:02
* phillw still has scars when i thought i knew how to it23:03
csousait's an intel23:03
malevcsousa,  go to: Systen, administrations, hardware drivers23:03
emgomezdrubin, well, but rather than scanning packets, why can't i firewall known sources of viruses?23:03
malevmaybe it can find it23:03
csousaok23:03
emgomezi don't need something perfect23:03
drubinemgomez: Do you know sources of viruses?23:03
emgomezbut this office has a lot of staffers and volunteers coming in and out and everyone seems to end up installing stupid malware23:04
phillwemgomez: you will not get 'viruses' on a linux system, you will get hackers23:04
csousait's searching23:04
drubinemgomez: Users will install stupid malware no matter what you firewall23:04
drubinyou need to lock down the client machines23:04
emgomezyeah, i do need to lock them down23:04
emgomezbut23:04
csousathanks malev23:05
malevit's there?23:05
phillwemgomez: have you looked at edubuntu ?23:05
emgomeznone of the systems are set up to be administered really -- i mean, it's just like they installed whatever version of windows they got, for home use23:05
csousayep broadcom b4323:05
csousasould i activate driver?23:05
emgomezphillw, i haven't, i thought it was a desktop version for educational purposes23:05
malevcsousa, that is correct!23:06
csousathanks23:06
phillwemgomez: it is, but it also ties down a lot control to the 'teacher', it may be of help if you have 'errant' "children" wanting to break things23:06
emgomezphillw, well, the reality is that i don't think i'm going to convince the executive director to migrate all of the desktops to a non-windows environment. i'm trying to think of solutions that will work within the limits i have, which are not a whole lot of advanced tech knowledge on my part AND a relatively unsophisticated staff, technologically speaking23:08
phillwemgomez: go ask Bill Gates, then?23:09
emgomezexcuse me?23:09
phillwwe cannot help people installing malware on windows machines, we only offer an alternative that works?23:10
emgomezmy original question was whether or not i could run an ubuntu server with desktop machines that run windows23:10
phillwyou can, but it will not protect the windows machines23:10
emgomezokay, so why is a server that routes the internet traffic so much more complicated?23:11
emgomezputting aside the question of virus and malware protection23:12
emgomezor maybe not putting it aside, because i thought the function of server firewalling was to help prevent traffic that looks suspicious/virus-y23:12
csousathanks malev, wireless it's working just fine23:14
malevcsousa, cool!! enjoy Ubuntu then!23:14
phillwyou can have a ubuntu machine check for virus ridden emails and spam, on the packet level of examining each byte that comes in, you can block everything, or allow. If you'd like to try 'educate' the people, I'd suggest tying their browsers into WOT23:14
Raidsongthe only flaw is if they zip the virus23:15
Raidsongcant check the inside of a zipped file23:15
emgomezphillw, what's WOT?23:17
phillwRaidsong: as always, we're asking the little brother (linux) to try and look after the big daft one. We can only do so much, although you could set amail server up to expand and check all attachemtnes23:18
phillwemgomez: http://www.mywot.com/ You can set it so that users cannot access known bad sites, rather than just receive a warning.23:19
Raidsongphillw, the zipped file isnt viewed as executable there in lies the problem23:20
emgomezmmm, i like WOT23:20
emgomezlooks very nifty23:20
phillwemgomez: I install it by default on any minors computer systems & set the rule to "do not allow"23:21
phillwit's not perfect, as it requires people to judge sites, but it is pretty darn good.23:22
phillwRaidsong: I'm quite sure it would be possible for a system like this http://flurdy.com/docs/postfix/ to be able to do it, in fact, I'd wage a bet he'd like to make it so :-)23:25
Raidsongphillw, im sure its possible but would people like you unzipping things from their mail?23:25
Raidsongphillw, also if it has a password it wont work23:25
phillwthe server is doing it, and no, i have no problem with it, my vpolink email address goes through some of those checks. It may not be 100% accurate, but it does catch the ones we have deliberately tried to send.23:27
phillwRaidsong: security is like layers on a onion, the more that you have, the more you keep out. Can we guarantee 100%? no, but we can cut them down, just as we have IP / email address lookup tables for people registering and posting on forums - can we stop all spam, nope, but we can cut it down. WOT is another good tool in the fight against 'bad places', having a default engine that searches attachements for viruses is a good tool. If there were a sim23:32
emgomezwhat's a scheduler and what's the difference between a CFQ one and a deadline i/o one?23:41
phillwemgomez: the nearest i have found to be in 'english' and not 'tech' is here --> http://www.linuxinsight.com/cfq_to_become_the_default_i_o_scheduler.html23:58
