thisguykillscan someone help me00:20
thisguykillsI just installed ubuntu 10.4 on a netbook00:20
thisguykillswhen I enabled the wireless driver in the test mode, the wireless worked fine00:20
thisguykillsbut now it doesn't show any networks when I enable the driver00:21
Ken8521thisguykills, did you restart?00:21
thisguykillsyeah00:21
Jake2|cflmine either on an hp zv5220us00:21
Ken8521system up to date?00:21
thisguykillsyes00:21
Ken8521what wireless device?00:21
thisguykillsI tried installing another driver from /pool/restricted/b/00:21
Ken8521what led you to try doing that?00:22
Jake2|cfl2 of us here... my driver b43 broadcom00:22
thisguykillsthe post in this thread I made00:22
thisguykillshttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=146247500:22
thisguykillsblah is there any way I can uninstall what he told me to?00:23
thisguykillsthe driver?00:23
Jake2|cflsame problem, but I am just watching y'all's conversation so as to not confuse with 2 at same time00:24
Ken8521http://docs.google.com/View?id=dhkq5635_11f3hjxdp600:25
thisguykillsyeah so in that thread it says i didnt have internet, but since then i've gotten a wired connection00:25
Ken8521thisguykills, is that what you tried?00:26
thisguykillsno i tried what the guy told me to00:26
thisguykillsI booted the OS from my live usb, enabled wireless00:26
thisguykillsit worked, and then I installed the OS00:27
Ken8521ok..  well, try that link i just gave you, see what hapens00:27
thisguykillswhen I enabled the driver after i installed the OS, the connections didnt come up00:27
Jake2|cflKen8521: (that for bcm4312;  I have 4306 rev 3)00:27
thisguykillsI think my problem was that I didn't restart after that00:27
thisguykillsIm going to try reinstalling ubuntu00:27
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, i'm not 100%, but they are the same driver(43xx)00:27
Ken8521i think00:27
thisguykillsbrb i gotta eat dinner00:28
Ken8521thisguykills, you shouln't need to reinstall..00:28
Jake2|cflWhen I specify the ssid to connect to, it tries, tries, then says need passphrase (true)...more00:29
Jake2|cfli put it in correct00:29
Jake2|cflthen it tries tries and throws same msg back up00:29
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, are you seeing networks?00:29
Jake2|cflnot sure what mean--no wireless nets show00:30
Ken8521ok, so if its not seeing networks, putting in your password/essid, is not going to do anything00:30
Ken8521i'm assuming you're not the only wireless network in your area00:30
Jake2|cflno, on other computers i see 1 or 2 more00:31
Jake2|cfland I see mine00:31
Jake2|cfl10.04 RC00:31
Ken8521are you sure you're seeing your network, and you're not just seeing an entry you made?00:31
Jake2|cflon the other computers yes I see it and connect to it00:31
Ken8521i'm talking about under Linux00:31
VolkodavHow do  I check  the trim performance on Lynx on a 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic with trim capable SSD ?00:32
Jake2|cflKen8521: don't have another wireless linux00:32
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, are you under Linux now?00:32
Jake2|cflno but can go to it, but don't have irc there but can take this laptop00:32
Jake2|cflheaded to that room...00:33
Ken8521ok...00:33
thisguykillsblah00:33
thisguykillsi ran the computer from the live usb00:33
Ken8521so..00:33
thisguykillsand I enabled the driver, but now no networks are showing up00:33
thisguykills:/00:34
Ken8521thisguykills, i gave you a link, did you even look at it?00:34
thisguykillsyeah00:34
thisguykillsits for the wrong ethernet controller00:34
Jake2|cflKen8521: ok, there00:34
thisguykillsits for BCM431200:34
Ken8521thisguykills, 4312 and 4308, to my knowledge, use the same driver(43xx)00:34
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, now, is your Linux box seeing any networks at all.00:35
Jake2|cflKen8521: only the wired00:35
thisguykillsok ill try it00:35
Ken8521OK... so why would entering your network protocols do anything, of course its going to kick you back out, it's not seeing wireless networks00:35
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, which wireless device do you have again, the 4308?00:35
Jake2|cflI was just trying anything, so I selected connect to hidden net, put in my ssid, got what said b400:36

Ken8521Jake2|cfl, does the linux netbook have wired access?00:38

Ken8521what happens when you activate the driver?00:39
Jake2|cflKen8521:  it is activated00:39
Jake2|cflKen8521:  but don't know what mean by 'what happens'00:40
Ken8521have you restarted since activating00:40

Jake2|cflKen8521: yes00:40
Jake2|cflKen8521: but no wireless icon at top00:41

Ken8521hmm00:51
Ken8521see, it says its for 4311/4312, etc..00:51
Ken8521but i'm *almost* sure all the 43 devices use the same driver.00:51
Ken8521but i don't have a ton of experience w/ broadcom devices00:51
Ken8521it's just the driver is always references as "b43xx"... which leads me to believe all the 43xx devices, use the same driver00:52
Jake2|cflKen8521: I don't think so; I saw some pages that had different versions for them; let me find the link...00:52
thisguykillswtf asdfkasdf00:52
thisguykillsI just figured it out00:52
thisguykillsall I had to do was type in sudo modprobe b4300:52
thisguykillshaha wow im oblivious00:53
Ken8521well, thats a relief.00:53
thisguykillsI should've known haha00:53
thisguykillsok thanks for your help00:53

=== dmb is now known as NullPointerExcep
Ken8521thisguykills, well thats a very different device00:54
Ken8521thisguykills, you modprobed b43, for a device that isn't a b43 device, impressive...lol00:55
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, what does what do?00:55
DanaGBCM5751 is wired, most likely.00:56
Ken8521sounds like it00:56
Jake2|cflKen8521: u said do sudo modprobe b43.  I did; it went to next line--no messages back00:56
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, then i'd say it didn't work, when you modprobe something,it typically just goes right back to your prompt.00:57
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, did you look at that other link?00:57
DanaGah, yeah, bcm5751 is "nextreme" wired ethernet.00:57
Jake2|cflKen8521: yes that's what it did back to prompt00:57
DanaGtg3 is the driver, I think.00:57
Ken8521thisguykills, what is yoru WIRELESS device00:57
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, well, do you have wireless?00:58
Ken8521DanaG, don't the 4312 and 4308 wireless devices, use the same driver?00:58
Jake2|cflken: what should I see--all looks the same00:58
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, well, you should see wireless networks, so its probably not working00:59
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, post #2  http://www.backports.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1425601&highlight=broadcom+wireless00:59
mawstDid that Compiz/glx memory leak every get squashed?01:00
Jake2|cflKen8521: it worked it worked...01:00
Ken8521well sing the hallelujah chorus01:00
Ken8521what fixed it?01:00
Jake2|cflI did the create a new wireless network, it looked and connected.01:00
DanaGI believe that is true: 4308 and 4312 use the same driver.01:01
Jake2|cflKen8521: why did we have to do the modprobe thing to get it operating?01:01
Ken8521DanaG, yeah, i'm not very experienced w/ the various broadcom problems...01:01
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, probably wasn't seeing the driver for some reason01:01
Ken8521you would think "activating" the restricted driver, would have mod probed it01:01
Jake2|cflKen8521 Average users who don't know irc will be lost.01:02
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, average users are lost anyway01:02
Ken8521:)01:02

Ken85214308 right01:02
Jake2|cflKen8521 bcm4306 rev 301:03
Ken8521ok, and all you did was activate the driver in hardware drives, and modprobe b43... right?01:03
Jake2|cflKen8521: I had previously activated the driver...showed active...not work.  modprobe made it work01:04
Ken8521ok01:04
Jake2|cflKen8521: thank lots01:04
Ken8521didn't really do anything..lol01:04
Jake2|cflKen8521:  u did--the modprobe I would have never known to do01:05

rmrfslashI just installed the ATI proprietary driver and now my shutdown/boot splash screens look ridiculous. I think Kubuntu now thinks my screen resolution is like that of a small handheld device or something01:18
rmrfslashNot that this is a huge deal... but it looks pretty crazy.01:18
rmrfslashis there some way to change the splash screen resolution or something?01:19
rmrfslashit's the screen that shows "kubuntu" with the dots underneath that dipsplay before you even get to the login screen01:20
rmrfslashlooked fine when I had the "radeon" (catalyst) driver01:20
rmrfslashwoops... radeon is not "catalyst"01:20
rmrfslashcatalyst is the proprietary driver01:20
chorsermrfslash: i think that's a bug with the nonfree driver. the proprietary nvidia one has the same problem01:21
rmrfslashi c01:21
Ken8521honeslty, i thought it was a problem w/ Plymouth01:22
Ken8521seems plymouth is to blame for everything..lol01:22
rmrfslash:)01:23
crdlbso it's the new pulseaudio? :)01:23
chorseafaik it is the lack of Direct Rendering Manager in proprietary nvidia driver (for nvidia ofc), maybe it's the same with ati01:23
rmrfslashlooked cool before....01:23
rmrfslashnow my wife just laughs01:23
rmrfslash:-/01:23
bp0you can change the resolution with grub01:23
crdlbdon't reboot so much?01:24

chorses/abd/and/01:24
bp0http://sites.google.com/site/alucidfs/how-i-do/plymouth-resolution01:24
bjsniderchorse, if you're talking about boot resolution it's the lack of a kms driver in the nvidia/ati blobs. the foss drivers have kms01:24
Ken8521plymouth is gonna be the demon spawn child of this release...lol01:25
chorsebjsnider: yes, something like that. i haven't investigated it any further because i am happy with the free drivers.01:25
bjsniderplymouth requires kms and nvidia/fglrx hasn't got it01:25
bjsniderthere is a direct rendering manager in the nvidia blob though01:26
rmrfslashwell....  here goes nothing01:28
rmrfslashtime for a reboot01:28
rmrfslashsee if this works01:29
virtualdbjsnider: i though plymouth would use a 16 color vga fb on those01:30
SyddOn booting to the Lucid RC Live CD, it gives an error "Installation failed. The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." I've attempted several burns of the disk and checked the md5 sums, so its not an error with the disk itself. Anything else I can try to get RC installed?01:30
arandSydd: You could try using the alternate installer iso I assume (textbased install)01:32
Ken8521or.. if the machine is capable of booting USB, use unetbootin to put the ISO on a thumb drive, see if you get the same problem01:33
SyddIt can boot into USB, but I don't have a thumb drive. Has anything changed from alpha/beta1/beta2 to rc that could have caused the issue?01:34
rmrfslashguess it would help if I could even see the grub menu when I boot01:35
rmrfslashwhere'd that go?01:35
rmrfslashI hit Shift01:35
rmrfslashnothign happened, no grub command line01:35
Ken8521rmrfslash, i had the same problem, only OS on that machine?01:35
rmrfslashyup01:36
Ken8521yeah, there's a modification you have to make to grub.. but i can't remember what it is.01:36
Ken8521hang on01:36
bjsnidervirtuald, it does, but the full features require kms01:36
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, where you holding down shift?01:37
rmrfslashno01:37
rmrfslashjust hit it a few times01:37
rmrfslashshould I hold it down?01:37

Ken8521fwiw, the shfit key never worked for me either01:38
bjsnidervirtuald, the full resolution of the monitor and all of those stupid plugins01:39
bjsniderwhich are highly useful when your boot lasts 2 seconds01:39
un214how do I turn off plymouth's splash?01:40
ZykoticK9un214, remove "quiet splash" from /etc/default/grub to see the text output under plymouth01:41
un214great01:42
termitor hello, i'm have some problem on my wifi ,  ath5k drivers , rs241301:42
rmrfslashOK... I entered the best vbemode they had listed 1024x768x3201:43
rmrfslashlooks different, but still pretty awful01:43
rmrfslashmy *actual* screen resultion is 1366x76801:44
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, i doubt the vesa or similar frame buffer doesn't support that res - thus the vbemode is important01:44
rmrfslash?01:45
rmrfslashI checked vbemode01:45
rmrfslashI didn't see this resolution01:45
rmrfslashwent to the grub console, typed in vbemode01:45
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, exactly - which is the correct thing to do - but it only supports the 1024x768 resolution, and not your actual native resolution.01:45
rmrfslashright01:45
rmrfslashbut before I installed the nonfree driver, the splash screen looked fine01:46
rmrfslashnow, it looks terrible01:46
rmrfslashI kind of feel like a jerk complaining about the boot splash screen01:46
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, yes because of noveau vs propritary driver!01:46
rmrfslashnoveau?01:46
rmrfslashis that the free nvidia driver?01:46
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, yup01:47
rmrfslashoh01:47
crdlbyes, nouveau01:47
rmrfslashI'm using ati :P01:47
crdlbsame situation though01:47
ZykoticK9crdlb, thanks for the spelling catch :)01:47
termitorrmrfslash, nouveau (french word)01:47
rmrfslashwell, so what you're saying is, if I install the nonfree driver my boot splash screen is doomed01:47
rmrfslashwhich I'm fine with btw....01:48
rmrfslashbut it would be nice if it wasn't01:48
rmrfslashobviously not critical01:48
ZykoticK9rmrfslash, if you're using ati - i have NO ideas.  Best of luck man.01:48
rmrfslashno kidding01:48
arandrmrfslash: Yea, from what I've heard the binary blob from nvidia doesn't play well with plymouth splash.01:48
rmrfslashworst mistake ever01:48
virtualdbjsnider: i have the full resolution of my monitor (on free drivers) but still not enough place for dots when entering my cryptsetup password :p01:49
rmrfslashI would have gone w/ the radeon driver if it wasn't such a piece of junk. the sucker had my fan going pretty much 100% of the time01:49
arandrmrfslash: Oh, you're on ATI... I don't know there... might be same thing though..01:49
rmrfslashat least w/ the proprietary driver, it kind of gives my poor laptop a break01:50
rmrfslashno hardware acceleration that I know of w/ the free driver... yet01:50
rmrfslasheven though ati releases the specs on their boards01:50
bjsnidertermitor, install this package and reboot: linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic01:50
termitorbjsnider, what driver is use on backport ?01:52

Volkodavanybody did any testing on SSD trim support in 33 and 34 kernels ?02:32
Ben64Hi. I'm on 8.04 Hardy Heron and want to upgrade, but don't want to break anything. I plan on backing up my root partition using dd. I figure it would also be a good time to organize my partitions better. My boot drive is sdb, /boot is sdb1, / is sdb2, swap is sdb3. and a data partition is sdb4. I'd like to combine /boot and /, and make / larger. What's the best way to do that, and still allow ubuntu to boot?02:33
macoBen64: i'd use rsync to backup / instead of dd. dd requires that partitions be the same size02:34
felonif i installed something through software center and cant find it02:34
macoBen64: were you planning to install from a cd to upgrade? if so, just go into manual partition mode & combine sdb1 and sdb202:34
felonsearch files didnt come up with nyhting either02:34
Ben64maco: well if everything goes right, I wouldn't need to restore it02:34
macoBen64: there's also the bit were dd is *slow* since it copies the empty space too02:35
Ben64didn't think it was possible to combine partitions02:35
macoBen64: they're next to each other, so you can delete them both, then make a new one in their spot02:35
Ben64i want to make / part bigger, cause there pretty much is no empty space :)02:35
Ben64I want to upgrade, not install fresh02:35
macoBen64: ok then you need to boot from a live cd, back up your kernels and things from sdb1 to some other media, delete sdb1, make sdb2 bigger, put the stuff that was in sdb1 into a folder in sdb2 named "boot" and then edit the etc/fstab in sdb2 so that it doesnt look for /boot on sdb1 ... probably also edit grub02:37
feloni installed something through software center and cant find it02:38
Ben64maco: where does ubuntu keep the information on where the swap partition is?02:38
macoBen64: /etc/fstab02:38
macofelon: dpkg -L <package name>02:38
Ben64oh wow, didn't know swap was in fstab02:39

You need to install v86d, you may need to add uvesafb and v86d to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules (I'm not sure if this is neccisary but it shouldn't hurt anything) then run "sudo update-initramfs -uk all". gartraljoaopinto: two interface mobo, two cat5 cables going to two ports of the same router.. turn both interfaces on and you will have the same issue im seeing.. no networking, at all.. sometimes spilling over to lo and crashing the system11:10
joaopintogartral, if you didn't reported the bug your complains are a bit of context, problems don't get fixed unless they are known :)11:11
BUGabundo_remotelets say it's a bug in the router11:11
BUGabundo_remote:)11:11
joaopintoout of11:11
BUGabundo_remotefor that, you will need to use eth binding11:11
BUGabundo_remotewhich I bet you aren't11:11
yofelI have a bug in my router here: connect both eth cards in my desktop with the router -> shutdown my desktop -> router crashes11:12
joaopintoyou can't have two interfaces on the same network using regular ethernet networking11:12
BUGabundo_remoteyofel: LOL11:13
gartralBUGabundo_remote: i havent found any info regarding this on the 2WIRE 3800HGV-B and it works properly in windows and bsd... just not linux11:13
yofeljoaopinto: I know, I wanted to see what happens, NM just discards the older connection and uses the last connected one11:13
BUGabundo_remotewindows accepts two links to the same network??11:13
BUGabundo_remotethat would be a 1st11:13
gartralso does BSD11:13
BUGabundo_remotelast time I saw that happen, the entire building lost network11:14
gartralmy ping times drop in both when the two interfaces are working11:14
yofeljoaopinto: I didn't expect my router to hard freeze though on shutdown o.O11:14
BUGabundo_remotedue to arp repeats11:14
joaopintogartral, just because it works on some other OS it doesn't mean it should, specially when it is not expected to work from a network perspective11:14
BUGabundo_remotejoaopinto: at least not without binding11:14
=== log|in is now known as Guest4586
joaopintoBUGabundo_remote, that is not "regular" networking :)11:15
BUGabundo_remotetrue11:15
joaopintoat it's usually referred as bonding :P11:15
gartralBUGabundo_remote, joaopinto but the mobo was sold with the dual nic as a lag-reduction feature, and i do see a difference in games in windows.. and tests in bsd reflect the improvement.. so yes, id'e say this is a feature distinctly missing in ubuntu11:15
BUGabundo_remoteactually depends on the OS11:15
joaopintogartral, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_bonding11:16
BUGabundo_remotegartral: then I guess the *board* needs special settings in the linux kernel11:16
joaopintoit depends on OS and switch/router whatever support11:16
joaopintoon Linux it requires specific configuration, is not something expected to work out of the box, because again, it's not regular network, not all switches/routers support it11:17
BUGabundo_remoteI mean the name it gets called.....11:17
joaopintohttp://www.cyberciti.biz/howto/question/static/linux-ethernet-bonding-driver-howto.php11:17
joaopinto:P11:17
gartraljoaopinto: well im seeing a ton of boxes with multiple nic interfaces on board.. mine is so special it has 3 seperated BIOSes11:18
joaopintogartral, the issue is not multiple NICs, it is multiple NICs on the SAME LAN11:18
joaopintoyou don't find tons of boxes with multiple NICs on the same lan11:18
gartraljoaopinto: then why does it work in every other os, even sold as an enhancement in windows. and not work in linux?11:19
gartrals/in/with11:19
joaopintogartral, I don't know about the other OSes, about linux I already explained you, regular networking has a single IP<->MAC relation, and you can't do it with multiple NICs on the same LAN11:19
joaopintothat would be similar to a regular IP conflict11:20
BUGabundo_remotenot that similar11:20
joaopintohowever, channel bounding is supported at the OS level with certain switches/routers, it is supported in Linux as long you set it up11:20
BUGabundo_remotebut the routes would be mad11:20
gartraljoaopinto: but it works on windows, no issue, it works in bsd, no issue, i load linux, and theres a chance the os fails too boot.. what is wrong with here.. at the least, it should display a common warning like "make sure you UNPLUG an interface before booting"11:21
joaopintoBUGabundo_remote, it is similar, you would have 2 MAC address with the same IP, wether those MACs are from the same host or different, it's irrelevant :)11:21
gartraljoaopinto: but each interface has it's own MAC11:21
joaopintogartral, right, but "plain" routing tables only map 1 IP to 1 MAC11:22
gartraland they both get seperate ips in windows..11:22
joaopintoah, that's not bounding11:22
gartralwell i knew that11:22
dk2testhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_aggregation11:23
yofelwell, for me if I plug both in they get both seperate IPs and the first connection gets ignored. All traffic goes over the last connected one11:23
joaopintothat depends on your route table, which will point to a single IP11:24
yofelah, makes sense11:24
gartralthen why doesnt my systemm do that11:25
joaopintogartral, anyway we are not network experts here, if you have a feature on other OS that you feel is missing on Ubuntu you really should file a bug report :)11:25
=== om26er_ is now known as om26er
gartraljoaopinto: hold on, i'll dig up the copy of this bug from 6.06... it's THAT old11:26
gartralthat is if it's still around11:27
joaopintoit should be around unless the reported did not care about it :)11:27
dk2testgartral: IEEE 802.1AX is not widely used among end users.11:28
gartraldk2test: seeing as i dont even know what that is, i'll go ahead and believe you11:29
BUGabundo_remoteahaha11:32
gartralBUGabundo_remote: there's no need to laugh at me dude11:33
=== yukiseaside is now known as Guest90251
dk2testI think it makes sense to simplify the usage of several NICs on a single LAN, but I can't remember seeing any OS that do that in a end user friendly way11:36
=== Guest90251 is now known as yukiseaside
dk2testMy guess is that few end users in a home setting have switches that supports it. But I might be wrong11:37
gartraldk2test: XP sp3 and win 7 rtm both run great, freebsd runs out of the box fine11:37
dk2testgartral: Any documentation? I would like to see how they do it11:37
gartraldk2test: if it's a switch problem, then why does windows, and a windows-unlike os work fine, well linux is bust chasing it's own tail?11:38
gartraldk2test: i havent found any, but i havent looked that hard as bsd gives me a headach11:38
Mocanyway to get laptop Fn+ key to work again in 10.04 ?11:39

BUGabundo_remotewhat haven't rt cards been a problem? ehe11:42
xXedixXxWell, in 9.10 my rt2860 works fine, but when I went to 10.04 it constantly asked me for the WPA key and wouldn't connect.11:43

Mocgartral: interesting..11:46
MocI tried to bios update but it didn't work in linux :(11:47
yofelxXedixXx: anyway: the 'dmesg' command will print the kernel log, and the rt2860sta driver is built in a semi-debug mode by default11:47
gartralMoc: it *could* be that the switch>switch back is happening so fast you dont really notice it11:47
yofelxXedixXx: so you'll see a bunch of errors when the network fails, if that will tell you something is another question though11:48
gartralalso, theres something wrong with usb power in ubuntu. my phone isnt getting enough power to charge, and i know it's plugged into the same high power port it was plugged into when windows was running11:48

Namely want to run geany and nautilus for some programming stuff from a Windows machine, thats firewalled. gartralalso, theres something wrong with usb power in ubuntu. my phone isnt getting enough power to charge, and i know it's plugged into the same high power port it was plugged into when windows was running12:02
gartralred: have you tryed a remote x server?12:02
joaopintoremote X is overkilling12:06
gartraljoaopinto: no, overkilling it would be running a dedicated satilite link to bypass the firewall12:07
joaopintogartral, overkilling in the sense that it's performance is terrible12:08
gartraljoaopinto: that strictly a matter of link speed12:08
SandGorgondoes kubuntu 10.04 have pulseaudio or does it have its own sound server ?12:09

joaopintogartral, it's unusable in the same link where terminal services is usable12:09
SandGorgongartral, in my Sound and Video configuration, I dont have pulse - I have "Xine" in the backend and "Audio Output" section has HDA Intel and "Jack" . Where is pulse ?12:10
yofelSandGorgon: you're using KDE, which uses phonon I guess12:12
yofelgnome uses pulseaudio by default, KDE not12:12

Quietstormhi yofel12:13
SandGorgonyofel, actually I'm debugging my suspend/resume issue vs Gnome... I see the resume hooks in KDE have Pulseaudio missing and packagekit as an extra. So just wondering if the issue could be one of those.12:13
alkisgOtherwise neatx has the best performance for low bandwidth connections...12:13
SandGorgonyofel, so there is no pulse to speak of12:13
yofelSandGorgon: I'm not 100% sure there, but KDE has phonon as a mixer backend and doesn't require pulseaudio, so it shouldn't be installed by default12:14
SandGorgonyofel, well removed packagekit resume... here goes nothing ;)12:14

theadminDr_Willis: :D Or more like removal of HAL and Upstart... how does one even say it? enbestments...13:49
yofelalkisg: it's running here, I don't use locks here though, maybe it isn't started early enough?13:49
QuietstormActionParsnip, I used the 2.90 but it is a 32 bit driver and I have a 64 bit system.13:49
Dr_WillisI still think theres a few parts of hal..13:49
Dr_Willisand Upstart is definatly still there.13:49
alkisgyofel: thanks - I'll reboot to recheck13:49
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: then you may have to use a 32bit OS to acommodate your printer13:50
theadminDr_Willis: I mean, like "Removal of HAL, and Upstart ...errr... dunno the word, well, better-makings"13:50
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: if canon won't support 64bit then you are stuck13:50
andiolsihi, i have no '@' in opera and firefox, but it works in gterm, ooffice and pidgin.  im using an apple aluminum usb keyboard and have remapped some of the keys via xmodmap to make it behave like a pc-keyboard13:50
theadminDr_Willis: And there are no things which require HAL in default install of GNOME-ish Ubuntu13:50
Dr_Willistheadmin:  i think there was a discussion of this the other day.. there were some things that needed it.. but i dident pay much attention13:51
QuietstormActionParsnip, thanks, I replace with an HP13:51
Dr_WillisI DO see on the easypeasy release (just came out) notes. that they claim complate removal of HAL.13:51
yofelDr_Willis: not in the ubuntu default install, KDE is one thing that still needs it for example13:51
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: if you just use the ppd does that not work on 64bit?13:51
Dr_WillisI did see some HAl updates just a little bit ago. but this is a Gnome+KDE+other box.13:52
yofelDr_Willis: and hal won't be started unless you're actually using something that needs it13:52
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: extract the rpm using: rpm2cpio ./cnijfilter-ip2500series-2.70-1.i386.rpm | cpio -dimv13:52
om26erpitivi still uses HAL13:52
yofelom26er: wait, wasn't that in the default install o.O?13:53
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: then in /path/you/extracted/to/usr/share/cups/model there is a PPD file named canonip2500.ppd, does that not work13:53
Dr_Willisthats what i was just thinking. :)13:53
om26eryofel, yes it is13:53
yofelerr....13:53
yofelhow is that complete hal removal then...13:53
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: i can pastebin the file if you want13:53
theadminPitivi... who the heck actually made it? lol, can't find ANY data on that13:53
om26ertheadmin, collabora maybe13:54
yofelwell, pitivi doesn't work for me anyway13:54
felondoes anyone know of a good working WBFS Manager for (ubuntu) ..13:54
Dr_Willisyofel:  from what i read in the notes and stuff they neer said a complete remoal. ;) but  its all relative i guess13:54
QuietstormActionParsnip, I used the debs and install that way13:54
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: try the ppd, its basic but should work. you shouldnt install 32bit debs on 64bit OS13:55
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: here is the ppd file: http://pastebin.com/9B5DpKba13:55
yofelDr_Willis: indeed, I guess hal not running by default is enough to call it removal ^^13:55
Dr_Willisjoy - plug in usb flash drive.. it dosent automount...13:55
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: thats all you really need, remove the deb stuff you installed and use that ppd, it will be an option in the printer install process13:56
eremiteWhy cant I use just the volume applet instead of the new ugly notification applet, with it's spaced out icons?  Or how about how rythmbox only opens minimized to the tray now?13:56
felonanyone using WBFS Manager in Ubuntu ?13:56
joaopintofelon, what is WBFS ?13:56
eremiteIs it possibel to fix this?13:56
theadminmeh, what really worries me is the upcoming GNOME 3 thing13:56
theadminomg USC has a LOT more apps in lucid o_O13:57
ActionParsniperemite: i read a guy's post about the minimisation of rythmnbox13:57
QuietstormActionParsnip, How do I use the ppd?13:58
felonjoaopinto : its a wii iso manager to add files to a WBFS wii partition on a usb or HDD Drive13:58
eremiteIts very annoying, and middle click doesnt even work with the tray icons anymore, and the notification applet forces you to space out icons instead of a compact and neat sys tray.13:58
ActionParsnipQuietstorm: when you use the add printer item in admin it is an option to use ppd13:58
joaopintofelon, I don't thinkg you will find anyone using that around :)13:58
theadmineremite: They are removing the tray anyway in 11.0413:59
eremitetheadmin: and replacing it with?13:59
theadmineremite: Bunch of menus13:59
eremitetheadmin: that's dumb.14:00
eremiteI recall reading a post about that now.14:00
Dr_Willisor it may be the coolest thing...14:00
Dr_Willis:)14:00
Dr_Willishard to tell what will really happen14:00
eremiteIt sounds like it's extra clicks, which is dumb.14:00
Dr_Willis'a mouse? who would ever want to use a mouse' .....14:00
Dr_Willis:)14:00
eremiteMost people.14:00
ActionParsnipDr_Willis: windows users ;)14:00
* Dr_Willis polishes his collection of ps2 mice14:01
eremiteI havent been a windows user for a long time, and I use the mouse.  Most peopel use the mouse, unless you are stuck in a terminall all day.14:01
* Dr_Willis goes back to using C64 basic with a Joystick14:01
theadminAlt+F1 and navigate around with keyboard...that's what i usually do14:01
Dr_Williseremite:  i can recall when a mouse was a 'new fangled gizmo' :)14:02
eremiteDr_Willis: I remember my first scroll ball.14:02
patdk-wkheh, setting up serial port mice, what fun14:02
Dr_Willisand when 2 mouse buttons were the norm.. then we had this fancy 3 button mice..  and then we fall back.. and had a wheel that rarely worked..14:02
Dr_WillisNow this mouse i got now = 2 wheels, and like 5 buttons14:03
* patdk-wk just used a tablet, nice 16 button mouse on that :)14:03
eremiteThe wheel is essential to computers for me.14:03
eremite3 buttons and a wheel is perfect for me.14:03
Dr_Willissome of the wheels on some of these mice are  very unuseable..  dependign on hwo the maker did it.14:03
Dr_Willis'sudo dpkg --configure -a'14:03
Dr_Willismiddle clicked worked on this one for a change. :)14:03
Dr_Willismiddle click not schroll! you silly mouse!14:04
eremiteMiddle clicks has worked on every mouse Ive owned, like 10 of them.14:04
Dr_Willisyea it works but some times the wheels are designed in a poor way that makes it hard to middle click properly14:04
ActionParsnipget a mac mouse, 1 button only, gives them less choice like their compatible hardware :D14:04
eremiteNot at all, my wheels are fine.  They click fine and scroll smoothly.14:04
Dr_Willisactually i saw mac mice whiths  a special button just for the Widgits14:05
eremiteThats silly.14:05
Dr_Williseremite:  that means that ALL mice in the world are exactly perfext then? :)14:05
Dr_Williswidgits.. gotta love that trend also.14:05
eremiteAre you trying to starw man me?  I didnt say that.14:05
Dr_WillisYou said 'not at all' :)14:05
Dr_Williswhere did i see a mose at that had a whold keyboard on it.. :)14:06
switchgirlhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/422765/14:06
switchgirlno idea what to look for14:06
Dr_Willisswitchgirl:  what was the actual issue?14:06
eremiteWhere did I say "not at all"?14:06
Dr_Willis eremite | Not at all, my wheels are fine.14:06
switchgirlDr_Willis, i want to speed the boot time up14:06
Dr_Willisswitchgirl:  and this post is for what exactly?14:07
BUGabundo_remoteswitchgirl: let me know if you manage to do that14:07
eremiteI see, now.  I guess I dont buy crappy hardware.14:07
Dr_Willisswitchgirl:  and what are you trying to do to make it any faster?14:08
om26erwait for maverick ;)14:08
switchgirlDr_Willis,  update / gtrade the BIOS14:09
eremiteIs boot time really that much of a concern for people?  How often are you actually turing off your computer that will make an extra 3 seconds shaved off of boot time matter?14:09
om26ereremite, it matter14:09
Dr_Willisswitchgirl:   the pc's main bios you mean?14:09
patdk-wkeremite, 3/4 times a day?14:09
theadmineremite: I won't turn this poor thing off for the entire week.14:09
switchgirlyeh14:10
SandGorgoneremite, no shit really.. I wish suspend/resume was optimized rather than boot time... or wireless drivers14:10
switchgirleremite, your nick makes me think of marmite :P14:10
eremiteIm only at a 2 day uptime right now due to a power outage, but this old junker is on all the time.14:10
Dr_Willisswitchgirl:  most of th time the PC/bios/mb makers have tools that show the bios versions and what updates are avail14:10
eremiteswitchgirl: what is marmite?14:10
switchgirlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite14:11
eremiteIt looks like mollasses made out of beer.  I'm sold.14:12
eremiteoh crap, its just Vegemite.14:12
yofeloh hey, we have new iso dailies :D14:13
Dr_WillisHmm I can see my Mb bios versions with14:14

xXedixXxHello14:16
xXedixXxAnyone here using rt2860 wireless card with Lucid?14:16
om26erxXedixXx, no but if you state the exact problem someone here might know the solution14:17
xXedixXxIt's just that when I upgraded to Lucid before, my wireless wouldn't connect and kept asking for the WPA key over and over again.14:18
xXedixXxI might try to upgrade again though.14:18
xXedixXxIf I reinstall 9.10 (if the wireless still doesn't work) will it keep my installed programs and files?14:19
yofelxXedixXx: can you try wicd too then just  to make sure it's not a network manager problem?14:19
yofelxXedixXx: installed programs: no, installed files: yes (unless you format root "/")14:19
xXedixXxOkay.14:19
xXedixXxNot too worried about the programs.14:19
xXedixXxAlrighty.14:20
xXedixXxI'll retry 10.0414:20
xXedixXxAlso, is it in RC now?14:20
JEEBsvYeah14:20
yofelxXedixXx: dpkg --get-selections | awk '!/deinstall|purge|hold/ {print $1}'    will get you a list of installed programs that you can feed to apt later if you want14:20
xXedixXxGoood14:20
xXedixXxCan I stay on IRC without the upgrade screwing up?14:22
xXedixXxOr should I close everything?14:22
yofelit should not screw up anything14:22
felonkeep it open14:22
Dr_Willisi alwyas stay on irc :)14:22
Dr_Willisexcept when rebooting14:22
xXedixXx:p14:22
Dr_Willisgrub2 needs an irc client14:22
yofellol14:23
jakexkshaha14:23
xXedixXxJust need to uninstall open office (screwed up when I tried to upgrade with it installed)14:23
patdk-wkDr_Willis, if you added it to your bios :)14:23
jakexkswell, go write one :)14:23
yofelxXedixXx: it should not screw up, just make sure you have 'ubuntu-desktop' installed14:23
xXedixXxUbuntu desktop :O?14:23
xXedixXxWhat do you mean.14:24
yofelthe package14:24
yofel!info ubuntu-desktop14:24
ubottuubuntu-desktop (source: ubuntu-meta): The Ubuntu desktop system. In component main, is optional. Version 1.195 (lucid), package size 31 kB, installed size 60 kB14:24
xXedixXxWhy do I need that?14:24
theadminpackage size 31 kb lol14:24
tsimpsontheadmin: it's a meta package14:25
theadmintsimpson: Yeah i know :D14:25
yofelxXedixXx: it makes sure all applications that belong to the ubuntu desktop get installed (especially stuff that is new in lucid on upgrade)14:25
xXedixXxJust got to backup my programming projects.14:25
xXedixXxAll backed uop14:27
xXedixXxpreparing to upgrade :o14:27
xXedixXxSo, if the wireless still doesn't connect, what should I do?14:27
yofelxXedixXx: get a wired connection and install wicd (will remove network manager) to make sure it's not a NM issue14:28
xXedixXxI have a wired connection now anyway (at home) just need wireless when at school.14:28
xXedixXxBut yeah, I will do that.14:29
xXedixXxThanks ^14:29
xXedixXxWhat are the major benefits of 10.04 though?14:29
PiciThe version number is 4 digits!14:31
patdk-wkyay!14:31
xXedixXxLoi.14:32
underdevxXedixXx: there are not a great many, as far as i'm concerned14:33
underdevI used gwibber on 9.10, so it's nice to see it integrated14:33
underdevit's also a LTR, so you can get comfy with it and know that it's supported14:34
PiciLTS14:34
underdevLTS, i mean14:34
underdevit still has all the advantages of ubuntu vs other distros though14:35
xXedixXxUser friendly?14:36
underdevexremely14:36
judgenlike what?14:36
underdevUbuntu Software Center (app store)14:36
xXedixXxHaha.14:36
om26erIs there any easy way to share internet between two ubuntu messages?14:36
om26ers/messages/machines14:36
xXedixXxAlthough, I still think using Ubuntu requires you to be more than you're average "nooby" windows user.14:37
underdevom26er: you might consider a router.  not being a jerk, just saying "internet connection sharing" is a little outdated14:37
underdevxXedixXx: my mom runs it, and she's happy14:38
=== z0rt|wor1 is now known as z0rt|work
om26erunderdev, ha well when I am at someones and I have a wifi and that computer have nothing just a Lan card then?14:38
om26ermaybe I have to update that system14:38
underdevthere is extremely little you need to hack, and i don't know if i've EVER had to go terminal14:38
judgenjust use NAT14:39
underdevi do, of course, but i dont think i've had to14:39
judgenI bet someone has a gui for configuring nat even.14:39
yofelthat depends on your hardware, as long that works fine K/X/L/Ubuntu is quite user friendly14:39
xXedixXxMy sister would use Ubuntu if the wireless wasn't an issue on her laptop... grrr14:39
yofelbut if you have hardware issues it's better to have something like LPIC1 knowledge...14:39
om26erxXedixXx, install driver?14:40
underdevor vote with your wallet... what?!?  This printer isn't supported?  Screw it, we'll get the Brother :)14:40
judgenunderdev: brother does not support their drivers for windows for long though.14:41
yofelI'm hapṕy that I have HP printers, they seem to just work with hplip14:41
underdevim talking about ubuntu linux :)14:41
judgenunderdev: I only buy printers that i can move about to all my enviroments.14:41
DASPRiDunderdev, is there also ubuntu windows? :P14:41
om26erlol14:42
judgenI still have 2 dot matrix printers running =D14:42
underdevxXedixXx: i've got a pile of $10-$15 usb wireless nicks lying around- all but one has worked with ubuntu out of the box14:43
underdevi'm such a sucker for a sale14:43
BUGabundo_remoteLOLOLOL14:44
underdevand belkin is at every target/walmart in the us at least, cheap and never had ubuntu fail to recognize them14:44
BUGabundo_remoteI did it again14:44
BUGabundo_remoteyet another bug in app that access filesystem14:44
BUGabundo_remotethis time: sed14:44

joaopintoBUGabundo_remote, uh ?14:45
BUGabundo_remoteeheh14:46
BUGabundo_remotelet me try  to reproduce on a few machines14:46
balachmarHi, I somehow lost the image for the reload button in nautilus in the Ambiance theme, does anybody know how to find out in which package it lives?14:46
xXedixXxWell Underdev, I've been a lot less fortunate than you then. On my sister's laptop the internal wireless card doesn't connect at all, and the external N mode USB wireless adapter just disconnects and reconnects constantly, being very unstable.14:46
balachmarReinstall of ubuntu-desktop did not help, by the way14:47
underdevi would also mention that i have yet to have a windows based friend not be impressed with compiz cube+ friends14:47
om26erbalachmar, humanity-icon-theme14:47
underdevxXedixXx: that would be frustrating14:47
underdevif i were contantly running into hardware compatibility issues, i would be far less impressed than i am14:48
balachmarom26er: or might it also be caused by the fact that I left my home dir intact while installing a new version. So it might ne looking for files that don't exist anymore.14:48
underdevbut i've built a lot of systems, and i find it handles nearly everything i throw at it14:48
Jake2|cfllucid RC will not pick up dhcp wifi address.  Pls look at syslog extract of "wlan" lines at next link.  Idea why?14:48

Ken8521Jake2|cfl, did you try installing the kernel source like i told you yesterday?14:49
joaopintoBUGabundo_remote, I didn't understood your issue14:49
Jake2|cflKen8521: hi.  No.  no idea how to do that, but narrowed prob down to dhcp not getting14:50
BUGabundo_remoteahh --follow-symlinks *solves* it14:50
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, the broadcom kernel source is in the repositories, you just click it and install it.14:50

Ken8521Jake2|cfl, no, it should be available in synaptic... go to System/Admin/Synaptic Package Manager14:52
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, are you in synaptic?14:52

Jake2|cflKen8521:  if you can, glance at the pastebin link above while i am gone14:54
balachmarom26er: Do you happen to know how I can find out which file nautilus is trying to find? And would it be ok to remove .gconf/apps/nautilus or .nautilus from my home?14:54
nanoguyhow do i install the NBR under 10.0414:55
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, i did, doesn't really tell me anything.14:55
balachmarIt is kind of annoying to have a half working theme14:55
om26erbalachmar, removing those config file have nothing to do with that icon afaik14:55
balachmarbut which file is it? you just told me the dir, but not the exact file. So that I can check if I have it14:56
pirxif i want to install an older version of an application (i want psql 8.3, not 8.4), how do i do that?14:58
pirxlucid has 8.4.14:59
pirxand i still want to get the updates if possible14:59
pirxcan i just add some 8.04 repository to sources.list?14:59
balachmarom26er nevermind reinstalling packages and switching themes and back makes it work, thanks for the help15:00
coz_pirx,  that can end up with some problems in the end....what do you need from an outdated repo?15:00
Jake2|cflKen8521: installed it; rebooted; no joy--same/same.  In the dialog for the connection...more15:02
xXedixXxWOAH> 5 hours remaining.. WHAT?15:02
Jake2|cflKen8521: are BSSID and MAC fields supposed to be filled in?15:02
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, well if you're not seeing networks, that is irrelevant15:03
Jake2|cflKen8521: I have one there I can see, but it is one I manually created15:04
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, yeah, so thats not it.15:04
Jake2|cflKen8521: any clues in the syslog?15:04
pirxcoz_: the new postgresql 8.4 is not yet tested with the application15:04
Ken8521no15:04
Ken8521not for  me15:04
coz_pirx,  oh  mm  ok  I dont have another solution then15:04
Jake2|cflKen8521: wifi remains a huge issue for linux/ubuntu15:05
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, no, usually its not... it's just broadcom is a bunch of closed source pricks.15:05
Ken8521my atheros works perfectly on live cd's, and after i install w/o any effort on my part15:05
Jake2|cflKen8521 ok, my luck15:05
yofelKen8521: the ralink drivers aren't much better, and I wish someone would turn off the debug mode for my rt2860 driver so that it stops spamming the kernel log -.-15:06
Ken8521lol15:06
Ken8521i've heard ralink is bad also15:06
yofelKen8521: here's my dmesg output... http://paste.ubuntu.com/422795/15:07
Ken8521yofel, lol, geez15:07
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, you had a 4306, rght?15:08
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, have you tried asking your question in the lucid forum on ubuntuforums?15:08
Jake2|cflKen8521: no, i will try that.  Hey, where do you specify a static IP?. I haven't seen such a field,15:10
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, most of the time, inside your router, then your router broadcasts as dhcp(or so i thought)15:10
yofelthere should be a list where you can add static ips in the manual settings of nm-applet15:11
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, this doesn't appear to be an issue w/ your router, its your laptop... if you even remotely suspectits your router, disable all security settings, and broadcast your ESSID, and see if your linux bo can connect15:11
Jake2|cflKen8521: yes 4306 rev 315:11
Jake2|cflKen8521: I meant, where in ubuntu do I specify to use static IP, not dhcp?15:12
Jake2|cflKen8521: (I don't suspect the router at all--it dhcp's to numerous other computers fine)15:12
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, you really shouldn't need to, but if you think you do for some reasson, right click nm-applet, choose edit connections, choose the connection, then edit15:13
Ken8521Jake2|cfl, well if its sending dhcp to the other pc's, you shouldn't need to set a static route to your laptop15:13
yofelJake2|cfl: somewhere in the settings you can switch from dhcp to manual, there you get a list where you add 'IP|Hostmask|gateway' and then you add the DNS address too15:13

NinoScriptI made that directory to have the same name as the one that is made automatically by clicking on the menu16:52
NinoScriptI think I'm missing some fstab options, but I don't know which ones I should be using16:53
NinoScriptI would like to know, which are the mount options that happen automatically when you click on the menu16:54
bjsniderNinoScript, you're on the wrong track. rhythmbox should not be segfaulting like that. try to address that issue directly instead of working around it with some kind of ugly mount hack16:55

skiwithpetei'm still having an impossible time with my internal mic on the laptop... anyone can help?17:33
Volkodavhttp://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-812509-highlight-ssd+trim.html  I tried this test17:33
FiReSTaRTtwig11: because those packages are getting updated on a regular basis.. they are doing lots of tweaks on the alphas/betas before the stable release comes out17:33
Picitwig11: There were updates pushed out after the RC was released.17:33
Volkodavsame results17:33
yofelVolkodav: I might try it later myself, note that lucid hdparm has no trim support17:35
FiReSTaRTskiwithpete: only the Pope's boss... try the basic stuff (unmute in alsamixer and also select analog stereo duplex under sound controls)17:35
smokexI have been getting between 20-350 mb of updates every day but assumed that was normal since it is so close to release.. everyone it trying to get the puzzle put together right before sticking it to the board so to speak17:35
FiReSTaRTskiwithpete: if that doesn't work, chances are nothing will17:35
twig11Pici: So that requires complete re-downloads of Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.? Is 336 MB within several days normal?17:35
yofelsmokex: we'll even get quite a few updates after release as not all bugs will be fixed in time, not as much as we get now though17:36
yofeltwig11: for development releases yes17:36
skiwithpeteFiReSTaRT, yep I've done both of those things17:36
FiReSTaRTtwig11: yes it does.. when they tweak those packages, you have to download the packages again so you can test the tweaked versions17:36
skiwithpeteso FiReSTaRT, what shall I do next?17:37
Picitwig11: Yes, but only because those particular packages are big.  We don't support downloading of package deltas, so the entire package gets re-downloaded when theres a change.17:37
AxiosHI al.17:38
FiReSTaRTskiwithpete: in that case you're pretty much screwed unless they release an updated driver for your chipset that does have proper support... it took about 3 versions for mine to start working and the karmic drivers still couldn't handle hdmi sound nvidia 840017:38
Axiosall17:38
smokexwhen a package is updated that firefox/openoffice depends on like anything from tcp/ip to java, you'll have to download new builds of firefox/openoffice as well17:38
skiwithpeteFiReSTaRT, how will I know / when / why?17:39
twig11Pici: I'm on a limited bandwidth connection; according to what you're saying, simply updating less frequently until the final release would greatly reduce my total downloads, right?17:39
skiwithpeteI've got an Aspire 7535 hardly a rare machine17:39
AxiosI've installed ubuntu 10.04 bout 2 weeks ago and been having issues (appears to be cluster and software errors on boot). I've looked round the forums for fix and thought i've found a fix but it came back. so i replaced the harddrive. and its not acting up again. :17:40

skiwithpeteFiReSTaRT, when you say you install new version you mean 9.10, 10.04 or do you mean updates?17:42

charlie-tcaShishire: yes17:42

Ken8521smokex, of course there will be...17:43
Ken8521smokex, even on a brand new PC that you just plug in w/ a new PC, you can guarantee one of the first things you'll have to do, is update windows.. operating systems are constantly getting updated and fixed17:43
FiReSTaRTskiwithpete: and if it doesn't fly, 10.10 comes out in about 6 months.. i had to manage by using an el-cheapo dollar store mic17:43
smokexoh im not complaining.. i do the same thing on my projects which are on a much smaller scale but still follow the same rules17:43
skiwithpetepainful17:44
FiReSTaRTskiwithpete: still works better than built-in.. there's nothing that can be done to stop it from echoing either through sound setting tweaks or through tweaking the package settings... still i get heard well enough without having to lug a mic17:44
skiwithpeteI'm keen on gnome voice control17:45
MaletorI am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu because Lucid cannot update a RAID and LVM from Karmic.17:45
* Maletor thinks this is poor.17:45

hueblurI nudge it to the right and it flips out.  Suggestions?17:52
MaletorLet's say I'm doing a fresh install of Lucid from an Alternate CD. How should I map out the partitions? /boot = RAID1 (100MB) 'root' = RAID5 (rest of space) or should i separate out /home ????17:52

hueblurMaletor, I like to partition out /, /boot, & /home17:53
ShishireMaletor: also, if you're using it as a web server, you're probably gonna want to map either /var or /var/www to a separate partition.17:54
hueblurMaletor, depends.  Server?17:54
Maletorhueblur: yes it's a webs erver17:54
hueblurShishire has an excellent suggestion.17:54

hueblurIf its a server, no need to really worry about /home.17:55
DASPRiDmelter, oh, tiny :)17:55

hueblurext4.17:56
MaletorI will use all ext4.17:57
Maletorbutter fs is not ready.17:57
Maletorbut how much to partition (size) for part 2?17:57
Maletorconsidering part 1 = 100mb and part 3 = rest of disk17:57
DASPRiDMaletor, 8x2tb here :)17:58
Maletorpart 3 = RAID5 by the way.....17:58
Maletorpart 1 and 2 should be RAID 1 ?17:58
Shishiregiven that you're partitioning out /home and /var, you only need space on / for /usr, and /tmp, so <5GB is my guess.17:59
* nmobix finalizing the update to LUCID ...18:00
MaletorK. I *need* RAID 1 for boot and I should use RAID 1 for 'root' and RAID 5 for part 3?18:00
ShishireMaletor: software raid or hardware?18:00
Maletorsoftware...18:00
DASPRiDsoftware for raid5 is not always best18:00
Maletorhardware = expensive. plus with my processor i'm not losing much in terms of performance18:00
DASPRiDmelter, hardware raid is more useful by giving you security18:01
DASPRiDas when your system fails, the raid doesn't18:01
Maletorread of raid5 is comprible to raid 1. it's when you write to a 5 that you lose performance.18:01
Maletorhardware raid is expensive too and out of my budget18:01
Maletorsoftware will be ok for now...18:01
guntbertDASPRiD: except when the raid controller fails - which I have seen more often than failed HDs18:02
Maletormaybe with 12.4 :)18:02
DASPRiDguntbert, really? what manufacturers were the controllers made by?18:02
Shishirewell, Maletor, how much do you value your system data? (as opposed to user data which is /home and /var/www)18:03
guntbertDASPRiD: one by Dell, the other one I don't know18:03
MaletorShishire: i value /home and /var much more than the OS18:03
DASPRiDguntbert, i'm running fine with an atto controller for years18:03

ShishireMaletor: then you should be fine with RAID1.  I'd also keep and off-site backup of part 2 just in case.18:04
MaletorShishire: meh.18:05
siriusnovaanyone else running 2.6.34 rc5?18:05
Maletorit would take a lot to kill 3 drives out of 4.18:05
Maletorraid1 across 4 drives = hyper super awesome performance18:05
Maletorwe will still need to use the alternate CD to setup raid and lvm on lucid right?18:06
DASPRiDright18:06
DASPRiDand you are lucky, the raid setup on lucid alternate sinstaller was broken18:06
ShishireMaletor: RAID1 across 4 drives + RAID 5 across same 4 drives + software RAID = potential disaster if comp borks.18:06
DASPRiDMaletor, they just got it fixed today ;)18:06

NiuxZykoticK9, ?21:12
ZykoticK9Niux, did you try installing the nvidia driver from the nvidia site or through "Hardware Drivers" - you should ONLY be using Hardware Drivers - and the Current Nvidia is 195.36.1521:12
NiuxWell, both actually21:12
trismssn_: it is called indicator applet session in the add to panel dialog21:12
ZykoticK9Niux, i'm affraid if you even tried the nvidia-site version that I personally can't help - but best of luck21:13
NiuxHardware Drivers said "install failed see /var/log/jockeylog".. Didn't get much from that though21:13

ballongenZykoticK9, ah i see. perhaps its turned off by dev for now21:14
ZykoticK9Niux, that's certainly a possiblity - bj might know for sure actually -- but the Nvidia driver from Site is another issue entirely (not Lucid friendly)21:14
ZykoticK9ballongen, sorry?21:15
bjsniderNiux, it says it failed but is it working? did you reboot successfully?21:15
ssn_trism: it is not there21:16
ZykoticK9NetSKaVeN, actually - so long as you use Hardware Drivers (or Nouveau) Nvidia has been working very well even at the Lucid Alpha stage21:16
ssn_i looked over and over again (not in german, nor english)21:16
ssn_but it is installed21:16
Ken8521ZykoticK9, there were some problems w/ some of them not enabling in the beta21:17
Niuxbjsnider, didn't reboot - it failed asmost right away.. will try to reboot21:17
Niuxbrb21:17
Ken8521ZykoticK9, that's actually one problem, i had.. it would enable, tell you to restart, then restart it would say the driver failed21:17
trismssn_: did you previously uninstall the indicator-applet-session package and then install it again? if so may need to log out/back in to see it in the dialog21:17
ZykoticK9Ken8521, I'm certainly not claiming that's it's perfect ;)  Sorry to hear about your issues.21:18

ssn_trism:  it exists21:22
ssn_please can someone tell me how to add the indicator applet21:25
niuxbjsnider, (after reboot) Hardware drivers still shows "a different version of this driver is in use" other than the Nvidia driver21:30
niuxbjsnider, can enable desktop effects now though21:31
trismssn_: makes no sense to me, it should be there, right-click/Add to Panel/Indicator Applet Session, right under Indicator Applet and above inhibit applet (in english anyway)21:31
ZykoticK9niux, bet that's just an issue with jockey -- if you use "lspci -vnvn" and find the VGA section - I bet it will show "Kernel driver in use: nvidia"21:31
ZykoticK9niux, or just open nvidia-settings to have a look21:32
niuxZykoticK9, sure does :)21:32

niuxbjsnider, he, how so? Zyko said the nvidia-installer wasn't Lucid freindly but..21:37
bjsniderniux, that's putting it mildly. normally if you used it you'd have to wipe & reload21:38
niuxI wont - so when 10.4 is out and I reinstall, I just use the Hardware Drivers and hope the same magic happens?21:38
