puffHey, so my new TV only has HDMI in, and my current graphics card only has S-video out.02:44
puffWhat HDMI-capable graphics card is recommended for mythbuntu on an asus e1870 p4p 800 s-x motherboard?02:45
puffI don't have a cable card and I'm not too interested in getting one, because all the stuff I want to watch isn't on the unencrypted channels.02:45
puffBut I wouldn't mind getting a remote control...02:45
dewmanpuff, I am in the process of modding a old xbox IR reciever to work with myth...Not sure what anyone else is using...03:22
symptomany recommendations on a PCI capture card for digital tv in the us.03:38
dewmansymptom, are you using ota?03:51
dewmanor are you using cable/sat/ coat-hanger?03:52
symptomcoat hanger OTA03:54
rhpot1991HDHR03:54
rhpot1991not pci, but its the best03:54
dewmanif you have no intention of getting cable or sat, why not grab a HDHR03:54
dewmanand you dont have to have it out in the open, stick under the couch so the wife doesnt see it.03:55
rhpot1991symptom: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BEEDBE?ie=UTF8&tag=baablogicnet-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003BEEDBE03:55
rhpot1991thats a very good price too03:56
dewmanrhpot1991, yes it is....I might just grab one to have another tuner..03:56
dewmandual is 13103:57
symptomThat is a good price.  I thought they were more expensive03:57
symptomI cant find much on the specs03:57
symptomso the dual tuner is 17003:58
symptomstill cheaper than most current PCI tuners03:59
dewmandual tuner is 131 on amazon.03:59
symptomno HDD on it thought right?  I tis just hte tuner, so mythtv does the recording scheduling, etc04:00
dewmanyep. its just a tuner...04:00
dewmanhttp://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Silicondust_HDHomeRun04:00
Zinn[www.mythtv.org] Silicondust HDHomeRun - MythTV04:00
dewmanthat attaches via cat5 to your network.04:02
rhpot1991you can attach it directly to a computer too, no need for a crossover or anything04:03
rhpot1991thats how I do mine04:03
rhpot1991have a pci nic and then ethernet attached to that04:03
symptombut if I were to get cable then I would need an analog tuner, to record shows from my cable box right?04:03
* rhpot1991 grumbles about this cheap netgear router which caused that setup04:03
rhpot1991symptom: well, the HDHR can record clear qam04:03
rhpot1991so normally you will get your OTA channels over that through cable, no need for an antenna04:04
rhpot1991with most providors that is all you will see04:04
rhpot1991analog is going away in most places, so that most likely wont help you much other than short term04:04
rhpot1991something like the HD-PVR and a set top box from your cable provider will help you record the rest04:04
dewmanif you get cable (comcast/blah) I would suggest a HD-pvr1212 with that guy, it has all the outputs that you can pipe into mythtv.04:05
rhpot1991symptom: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018LX0DY?ie=UTF8&tag=baablogicnet-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0018LX0DY04:05
dewmanrhpot1991, you beat me to it..04:05
dewmanlol04:05
rhpot1991thats my setup, HDHR and a HD-PVR04:05
rhpot1991some firewire, and some no longer used analog hauppauge cards04:05
symptomlets say I moved out to the booneys and I didnt have the skill/space/etc to build a sick antenna.  So I buy cable the output of my cable box is still analog right? so i would need an analog tuner?04:05
rhpot1991http://www.baablogic.net/drupal/node/1304:06
Zinn[www.baablogic.net] My MythTV Setup | www.baablogic.net04:06
rhpot1991symptom: analog is dead in the US04:06
rhpot1991all broadcast is digital and almost all cable providers are cutting off analog and going digital only04:06
rhpot1991I suppose if you weren't doing HD, and used one of the DTAs you could record over analog04:07
rhpot1991provided you can find an analog card for sale these days04:07
dewmani've got some old frame grabbers... =)04:08
dewmanwintv....04:08
rhpot1991yes, stay away from frame grabbers04:09
rhpot1991you could prob find a hauppauge 150 card on ebay or something04:09
rhpot1991http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=hauppauge+pvr+150&_sacat=See-All-Categories04:10
Zinn[shop.ebay.com] hauppauge pvr 150, Computers Networking, hauppauge pvr 500. Great deals on eBay!04:10
rhpot1991most of those prices, I'd say just get a HDHR instead04:10
symptomthanks all04:11
dewmanor if you really feel like being a geek, get a rss reader, then go find a webpage (that I wont name) that searches all of craigslist and pull all the listings for what your searching for via rss... =)04:11
rhpot1991symptom: make sense?04:11
symptomit does.  I would need the dual tuner in order to record a show and watch live TV.04:12
symptombut I suppose I would need two PCI cards to do that anyway.04:12
rhpot1991there are some pci cards that have dual tuners04:13
rhpot1991or one analog one digital (some of these only work in digital, so read up)04:13
symptomSo I can use a patch cable to go direct from the HDHR to my PC?  No crossover or switch?04:13
rhpot1991yep04:13
rhpot1991thats how I do mine04:13
dewmanor hybrid tuner (which you dont want) (I made that mistake)04:13
rhpot1991and if you are using mythtv .22 or newer, then you can use whats called multi-rec with the HDHR04:13
symptomhybrid is both analog and digital on one input dewman ?04:14
rhpot1991it lets you record multiple programs on each tuner as long as they are on the same multiplex04:14
rhpot1991so for instance I can record on cbs and fox (I think) at the same time04:14
dewmanrefrain that... the hybrid that I have is a not so great one...04:14
rhpot1991and only use one tuner04:14
rhpot1991symptom: if you get anything analog, make sure it does hardware encoding, anything that is a frame grabber will waste cpu to record04:15
symptommulti-rec?  So I can record two stations at the same time with one tuner?04:15
rhpot1991that goes for any hybrid that does analog too04:15
rhpot1991symptom: yep04:15
symptomhow do I know if two stations are on the same multiplex04:15
rhpot1991I can record 4 shows at once with my HDHR, you can push it beyond that but your channel layout will most likely make it not very useful04:16
rhpot1991symptom: http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels_us04:16
Zinn[www.silicondust.com] hdhomerun/channels - Silicondust04:16
rhpot1991plug your zip into there04:16
symptomso dewman even if Im just using the digital capability of the hvr-1600 (which is hybrid?) that is not recommended?04:17
symptomrhpot1991, 4 shows on one tuner?04:18
dewmanno no no....I jumped the gun...04:18
rhpot1991hvr-1600 is ok I think, there are 2 versions of it one that can do clear qam and one that can't04:18
rhpot1991symptom: 4 shows, 2 tuners04:18
rhpot1991I have the dual tuner HDHR04:18
dewmanmy fingers were typing but my brain was not communicating with them....04:18
symptomhaha.  ok so I want clear QAM if i go with the hybrid?04:19
symptomor 1600 is not hyrbrid?04:19
dewmanno its not... it has seperate  atsc and  ntsc tuners04:21
rhpot1991I think most "hybrid" tuners are just one of each, no?04:22
rhpot1991one card, one of each04:22
symptomok04:23
symptomso that http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels_us link is pretty sick.  Are the 256QAM stations that it shows unencrypted?  So once my cable is on I can go direct from the wall to my HDHR or HVR-xxxx04:24
Zinn[www.silicondust.com] hdhomerun/channels - Silicondust04:24
rhpot1991symptom: most likely your cable company is transitioning analog away04:24
rhpot1991they will more analog channels to clear qam and leave them there for a bit, then eventually those will get encrypted04:24
symptomok04:24
rhpot1991all you can reliably hope for are your local OTA channels04:25
rhpot1991I'm ignoring my analog channels in clear qam, cause one day they will be gone, I'd rather not get used to them being there04:25
symptomha04:25
symptomrhpot1991, so you pay for cable?04:27
rhpot1991symptom: yes04:31
rhpot1991I picked out an antenna and was ready to get rid of it, till my wife got angry about said decision04:31
tgm4883dang women ;)04:32
rhpot1991heh, agreed04:32
rhpot1991I woulda been sad about missing live sports04:32
symptommost major sporting events are on network tv though....06:53

stuarticusHi everyone, can anyone advise on upgrading to 10.04 when it is released? Do I need to change my sources? At the moment if I run update-manager -d I get an option to upgrade, which is presumably from the main repository, is this safe or should I wait, or even consider a clean install?11:31
ak74Hi,  I am new to Linux and have installed Mythbuntu.  I have a Hauppauge wintv pvr 500 card installed.  I also installed ivtv.  It will recoginize the card but will not get any channels.  when I go to watch tv on the frontend, it says please wait and then goes back to the frontend menu.  If I scan for channels, it says no signal lock.  I am on comcast cable.12:23
ak74Thanks in advance12:23
BezzebHi all - repeat of question from yesterday:  I'm looking to hire a mythbuntu appliance developer.  Any tips on where I can go to get someone familiar with Myth TV - and also aware of the constraints that go into making a sealed product for casual customer usage?  My company already has a streaming video service, and we already have a development team on the project, but we have a slot to fill to bring appliance development knowledge onto the team.12:36
DavieyBezzeb: Whilst it's unconventional, and if too many people did it it would have to be stopped; I would send your requestto the ubuntu-mythtv mailing list.12:38
Davieyhttps://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-mythtv12:38
Zinn[lists.ubuntu.com] Ubuntu-mythtv Info Page12:38
BezzebHi Daviey,  I thought about the mailing list, but then I remembered my old days on lists where requests like mind would be met with a degree of flame.  :)   Are you on the list?  Would they accept my inquiry in good spirits?12:40
DavieyBezzeb: it's a low volume one, and i think it will be fine.  I agree it *could* be a problem, but considering it will be the first one ever; I think it's worth a try.12:41
DavieyI certainly wouldn't have a problem.12:41
BezzebI mean my dream would be to hire one of the guys who packaged the live CD of mythbuntu for a month or something...  I know our problem in developing this new appliance would be fairly easy for a guy with the right skills to solve.12:42
BezzebOkay, I'll go sign up and pose my inquiry.  I'll leave this IRC open in the event anyone else has a tip.  We've got deadlines and are urgently looking to fill this slot.12:42
BezzebBy slot I mean job.  ;)12:43
Ratokhello everyone, is anyone out there who knows about VAAPI support of current linux intel drivers and supported hardware, my informations just say mpeg 2 on X4500HD12:54
tassburHi ebd, I'm having troubles with my HVR-4000 when I try to search new channels. If I do a full scan I get nothing, and if I import the channels.conf from an external scan I get my channels back, but when I tune to a channel, I only watch pixels and glich errors12:55
Ratokand another question, which codecs do the DVB-C systems use12:57
tassburanyone know what's the problem?12:57
Ratoktassbur: which DVB system do you use or is it analog?12:58

haffeHi guys, I'm looking at getting a HTPC. I would appreciate some input regarding hiberante/suspend cabablities, if anyone here has the following hardware. 1) DVB-Tcard (hauppauge nova-t 500) 2) graphics card (nvidia geforce)16:44
ak74Hi all, I need help setting up a hauppauge wintv-pvr-500 card23:28
tgm4883ak74, it should work OOTB, you just need to set it up in mythtv-setup23:34
tgm4883or you could just leave23:35
rhpot1991clearly the better solution23:42
tgm4883well yea23:42
tgm4883I would have just fixed his issue23:42
tgm4883this way he gets to tinker with it more23:42
rhpot1991thats what you get for trying to help23:43
