[00:00] yofel: think it was jsut before it was anounced [00:00] ah wait [00:00] we're talking about kubuntu (*headdesk*) [00:00] if I have karmic with binary from nvidia site, what do I need to do to upgrade? release notes say something about upstream drivers no longer working - ? [00:00] yeah, there were a few updates to the installer that shouldn't affect kubuntu much though [00:01] muffin2: have you rebooted since the problems started? [00:01] x/ubuntu isos were rebuilt today to fix a grave grub/installer issue relevant for them, kubuntu seems to be unaffected by it [00:01] James147 : I did it several times. [00:01] It happens each time [00:01] muffin: what's the problem? [00:02] muffin2: and you *can* login in a tty? [00:02] I'm running Kubuntu right now.. but I have to say (honestly) I think openSUSE is the best KDE distro [00:02] yofel : yes I can [00:02] muffin2: What's the issue? [00:02] benkevan : After I log out on kubuntu, there is no KDM but just a black screen. [00:03] I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter tty1. [00:03] This is kubuntu 10.04 published today. [00:03] That's quite retarded.. on a new installation? [00:03] muffin2: can you try 'sudo kdm restart' there next time to see if that helps, and save the /var/log/Xorg.0.log the moment it shows the black screen? [00:03] benkevan : It's a new stable version of kubuntu published today. [00:03] I know.. but is it a new installation? an upgrade? [00:04] yofel : I better save /var/log/Xorg.0.log before typing sudo kdm restart [00:04] yes [00:04] benkevan : It's a brand new installation [00:04] this shouldn't happen, but now that it does it would help to know why it happens [00:06] man [00:07] yofel : "sudo kdm restart" results in nothing. [00:08] argh, I should go to bed... 'sudo service kdm restart' - sorry man [00:10] sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart :D [00:11] Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting [00:11] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support [00:11] at http://wiki.x.org [00:11] for help. [00:11] muffin2: Please don't flood, use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste, don't use Enter as punctuation. [00:11] oops [00:11] . [00:11] Is OpenSUSE better than ubuntu? [00:11] o.O [00:12] !best | muffin2 [00:12] muffin2: Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Do NOT take polls in the channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots. [00:12] muffin2: depends, kde should be the same, this sounds like a graphics driver issue or something like that [00:12] yofel : It's sun virtualbox [00:12] benkevan: that's deprecated since karmic [00:12] how do I add the command line run textbox to the taskbar ? [00:13] what is the widget name ? [00:13] Okay so laptop just finished its upgrade - did the reboot and now it will show the Kubuntu splash screen for a split second (with really grainy, pixelated graphics and colors) and then the screen goes black. Nothing after that. Any thoughts? [00:13] hm, we did have a bunch of issues with virtualbox during lucid testing, might be one of them [00:13] is there any easy way to change primary display on kubuntu? [00:13] upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 by the way and it is a Dell 700M with onboard graphics and 1Gb of RAM [00:14] I should go back to ubuntu or to opensuse. [00:14] oh.. haha.. new back to ubuntu since.. 7.10 [00:14] or was it 6.04 .. can't really remember.. been a while [00:15] benkevan: we're replacing sys-v-init with upstart, 'sudo service ' can handle both types of init scripts [00:15] while the transition isn't finished [00:15] w00t upgrading to 10.04 :D [00:15] Ot [00:16] i am really surprised that this was released the same day as ubuntu. I guess i misunderstood the relationship between Kubuntu and ubuntu [00:16] It's time to try debian!! [00:16] actually /etc/init.d/kdm restart still works through a compatibility layer, dunno for how long though [00:16] oooh.. about time.. :o) .. then i won't get confused if I'm on Ubuntu vs RedHat HAHA [00:16] benkevan: ahhahah thats the reason i went with Kubuntu cause it looked so much more modern :D [00:16] Zhenya: kubuntu is ubuntu with KDE, we can't release kubuntu with finished KDE but unstable base system ;) [00:17] yofel : are you a kubuntu developer? [00:17] no, alpha tester [00:17] yofel: agreed. I thought that it would take y'all a while to push out K 10.04 after the U 10.04 was released [00:17] yofel : And I'm a late adopter. [00:17] man its just linux, there are many cool things in life to do ( not win) [00:18] looks like the servers are getting HAMMERED with upgrades [00:18] i'm @ 42kBs [00:18] HAHA [00:18] fuck yeah! [00:18] :er [00:18] YOU BNET [00:18] Sleeper: WAT [00:18] i was getting 4/MB then it bombed to 212kBs [00:18] why! [00:18] Zhenya: just use a different mirror, using the main server on release day isn't a good idea :P [00:18] ok sorry its ql [00:18] !language | smokealot [00:18] smokealot: Please watch your language and topic to help keep this channel family friendly. [00:19] smokealot: you apologized to a bot [00:19] Zhenya: then you'll have to live with it, you can't switch in the middle [00:19] Hi fellas. I've no sound in Flash. Kubuntu 10.04 (64bit), installed ubuntu-restricted-extras and have no sound either in Chrome or FireFox. [00:20] sorry thats OT [00:20] i will join you [00:20] ok ql have fun [00:20] if you're in dallas lets go riding :P [00:20] yofel: Btw, I am talking to cairo dock developer. He and I wonder, how do you call Lnacelot and Kmenu/kickoff with Dbus? [00:20] but my ride will be on the magic dragon (: [00:21] smokealot: hhahahahah [00:21] oxymoron: no idea, I am totally clueless about how dbus works, should learn about that sometime I guess... [00:22] yofel: You know someone who knows then? Or maybe someone is here and see this? :P [00:22] tew88: many ppl had this issue with karmic, you can try purging and reinstalling flashplugin-installer or purging it and installing the version from adobes site [00:22] later y'all :D [00:22] yofel: because he will apply a Lancelot/Kickoff applet for Cairo dock if he know how to interact with dbus or something like that [00:22] James147: Purging? apt-get remove? [00:23] oxymoron: the best place to ask if you have development questions is #kubuntu-devel I think [00:23] Okay so laptop just finished its upgrade - did the reboot and now it will show the Kubuntu splash screen for a split second (with really grainy, pixelated graphics and colors) and then the screen goes black. Nothing after that. Any thoughts? [00:23] tew88: apt-get purge (it will do the same as remove but also delete config files) [00:23] James147: ty, I'll give it a bash [00:24] well, I'm off to bed, gn8 folks === robin is now known as Guest38917 [00:26] yofel: Goodnight [00:34] Okay so looking around on the ubuntu forums - found an article that says the Dell 700M is aparently blacklisted. Any version of kubuntu works fine up until 10.04 - then all you get is a black screen whether it is a fresh install, upgrade or LiveCD session. WTF? So if I cannot use this OS, how can I revert back to Karmic without formating my machine? I was told this would be a seemless upgrade... :-\ [00:35] wow [00:35] that sucks [00:35] im clueless [00:35] I am pretty disappointed that the community was never made aware of these blacklisted machines... [00:36] RnFstRuckHrd: I am afraid down grading is not supported [00:36] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1461029 [00:36] WOW - great [00:36] talk about being up $h1T creek with no paddle [00:37] i never new a computer could be blacklisted for an install of linux [00:37] tsk tsk tsk [00:37] I know I am a minority case here but I feel REALLY short-sided [00:40] RnFstRuckHrd: sorry, but there is not much that can be done at this stage execpt a reinstall [00:40] man, I am irate. This is does nothing more then go against the whole idea of a free OS - blacklisted machines!?!?! The developers at Kubuntu have done A LOT of great things but they should absolutely ashamed of themselves for pulling something like this. I guess there is probably some convoluted reason for it that is far above my capabilities to comprehend but WHY WAS I NOT TOLD PRIOR TO TURNING MY LAPTOP INTO A PAPERWEIGHT (at [00:40] least until I reformat and start from scratch) [00:40] RnFstRuckHrd: unless you wait a few days and hope someone comes up with a workaround [00:41] TY for the info James147, I gues I am just venting now and this is not the place, sorry [00:41] I appreciate your advice [00:42] RnFstRuckHrd: unfortinatly there are sooo many mechienes out there its hard for get it working for everysingle one (windows has it easier as mechienes tend to be built with it in mind) [00:45] RnFstRuckHrd: Its also probally advisable from now on to try a live cd before upgrading :S [00:45] I understand but Dell as a huge market share in household PCs, notebooks in particular. While the 700M is archaeic by todays tech standards it was a MASS produced, affordable and productive notebook. I ams ure there are more then a few of us with this issue. Unfortunately for me is the only laptop I have to use and do not have time to tinker, as much as I would liek to. Its moments like these when I have to admit my friends [00:45] using windows are right, you get what you PAY for [00:46] Oh I know better now! but after having the kubuntu almeighties in this very same channel say, your upgrade will be SEEMLESS, I figured I could take their word for it [00:46] RnFstRuckHrd: they also have less of an issue because they dont upgrade their system as often (once ever few years vs twice a year)... and if your hardware dosnt work on a new windows mechiene i bet most ppl would buy a new mechiene [00:47] RnFstRuckHrd: it will be seemless in `most` cases, unfortinatlly there is always one person that it wont work for [00:47] I would too if I was not trying to get through med school - buying new hardware is not an option. Which is why Iw as so impressed with kubuntu [00:48] RnFstRuckHrd: where as if you where on windows you would probally still be running xp rather then vista or win 7.... so they still do have the issue they just dont seem to care as much :S [00:49] RnFstRuckHrd: heh, well that aint ood [00:50] ^^ good, looks like grub broak on mine with a fresh install [00:50] I only ever ran WinXP, I was more then happy with it. True it did not have any cool eye-candy but the OS itself ran flawlessy for me. I switched because Kubuntu utilized my hardware more efficiently, looked and functioned nicer, and I no longer had to pirate the software that I needed [00:52] RnFstRuckHrd: but my point is still there, you wouldnt upgrade windows so you ddnet encounter the hardship of upgrading an entire os to a new version :) Its just something you have to live with on a system that gets updated so often unfortinutlly (rather then waiting 10years for the next version) [00:53] I was fine witrh how Karmic functioned and work - but I burned a day watching the upgrade creep in and now I have to do nothing but find a karmic .iso / burn it / and format my 700M and spend the next few hours making it look at work the way I need it. No ones fault but my own in the long run (as I did not try the LiveCD first) but still think I should have gotte some kind of headsup from Kubuntu Devs abotu blacklisting machines [00:53] James147 - you are right [00:54] RnFstRuckHrd: and now to install lucid again and hope it works this time :D [00:54] I agree that the OS does not just magically work on all hardware but I cannot think of a reason to say, "we will design to NOT work on this one" [00:54] although i really should go to bed [00:54] James147 - GL!!! [00:55] RnFstRuckHrd: its not so much deskging it not to work on your, but one project has changed the way they work which is now incompatable with your hardware... [00:56] * James147 hates mirrored screens, he dosnt know which one to look at even though it dosnt matter :S the differnet resalutions dosnt help [00:58] How to add a command line text box to the taskbar? [00:58] well according to the article linked at the forum (i linked earlier) it shows something they were aware of. It seems they triaged it. I know that these things MUST happen and that is why new releases are constantly made. But at the hand of the day I am still the guy with the busted computer [00:58] which is no fun [00:58] Hello Im working on a buntu multiboot DVD on launchpad and needed to know if on the live CD if the initrd file found in /casper is named either "/casper/initrd.lz" or "/casper/initrd.gz"? Would someone be so kind as to verify this for me? [00:59] RnFstRuckHrd: but on the other hand they cannot keep package held back because it breaks one old mechiene or packages would never advance and newer mechienes might not work [01:00] For Lucid I mean of course [01:01] Like I said - I know why they did but it does not change the fact that I got the short end of the stick (no stick at all rather). As I said before, I am a minority case but still a kubuntu user and disappointed with my experience [01:01] RnFstRuckHrd: and i am not sure how they could implment an elegent system to stop some people upgrading [01:01] how do i add a textbox like backtrack4 to my taskbar " [01:01] On the 10.04 overview page they link to known bugs, Why not link to known blacklisted machines?! [01:01] ?* [01:01] I feel that has its place === diabolical is now known as dominicdinada [01:02] RnFstRuckHrd: probally would have been a good idea, possibally through the developers a sugestion and it might change in future [01:02] how do i add a textbox like backtrack4 to my taskbar ? [01:03] ? [01:04] Hi [01:04] Not to worry I will - don't misinterpret me (easy in IRC) I am not pissed and demanding compensation. What is done is done and I can fix it, I am just disappointed that have to fix it and that I cannot partake in the new 10.04 release. I do want to make sure that other people, myself included do not find themselves high and dry like me after a "seemless" upgrade. [01:04] Although next I am just going to test the LiveCD before going anywhere near that notification bubble asking if I want to upgrade ;-p [01:05] time* [01:05] dominicdinada: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/plasma-runner?content=75059 might be what you want, if not there might be somehting else on that site you could use [01:05] i was/am running the RC, with KPackageKit this automtically upgrades to LTS final right? [01:06] mvk : yes [01:06] ty James147 [01:06] This is our first Long Term Support release featuring the KDE Plasma Desktop.??? [01:06] Just tried installing Lynx on a Dell Latitude D800... seems to be working OK, except that the display is a bit dodgy and the mouse pointer is sort of duplicated! Anyone else encountered this? [01:06] meaning there has never been a LTS for kubuntu? [01:07] vadi01_: it is the first LTS with kde 4 [01:07] MidGe - others are having hardware "disagreements" too. Pray for a workaround [01:07] or figure it out and share ;-P [01:07] vadi01_: the last lts for kubuntu was 6.04 i think [01:07] hi, 10.04 until recently recognized automatically my monitor resolution, now with recent updates does not anymore. Can someone confirm the bug and/or tell me how to solve? Google does not help (xrandr just does not see 1920x1080 res anymore among the available ones) [01:08] RnFst.. ok... i'll start praying even if I don't believe in it! :) [01:08] quick question: I just installed 10.04 after not having used Kubuntu for a couple years. The new KDE 4 is great, but I have one gripe: I made some frequently used applications as desktop shortcuts, but upon trying to resize them, they instantly go back to their original size. Is this a known bug? Or did I lock their sizes without knowing? [01:09] I don't either - be glad you have graphics ata ll. The DEll 700M will not show a single thing - just black screen (whether its an upgrade, fresh install or livecd) [01:09] ^^^^ - MidGe [01:10] cirillo: I have had a few widgets reset their posistion after movment, but they usually stick eventually (dosnt happen offten though) [01:10] Yes.. it seems to be working.. with the display problems.. i'll wait until I upgrade my other boxes === dendrobates is now known as dendro-afk === dendro-afk is now known as dendrobates [01:10] MidGe: what graphics card do you have? [01:11] James147: I'll assume it's a known bug then, I've found a little solution: I just resize, then hold on to the widget for a bit [01:11] well, 9.10 to 10.04 on my netbook produced an empty desktop, apart from the "cashee" (or whatever is called) on the top right. Old procedure to make bar back fails. I'll try to take care tomorrow, but just to warn other people :) === ubuntu is now known as teque [01:12] markit: reason why is most often recommended a full-install [01:13] Typos_King: full install is a M$ thing ;P [01:13] markit: but it is alot less buggy :) [01:13] MidGe - just the onboard stock intel graphics that came in the Dell 700M (bought in 2005). [01:13] markit - it is a cashew by the way :-p [01:13] James147 NVIDIA [01:13] Hey folks, I've got a MAJOR issue here, I can't even damn well boot into the new release! Anyone care to help? I'm a bit out of my league here... [01:13] MidGe: try to enable the nvidia drivers if you havent already (kdesudo jockey-kde) [01:13] RnFstRuckHrd: thanks, I don't even know if is an english word or not [01:14] nor what means,so you imagin... [01:14] Yes standard card for Latitude D800.. I'll try the jockey-kde [01:15] markit : Cashew? its a nut. delicious too [01:15] I think the little guy in the corner of your screenw as dubbed the Cashew by users simply because of how similar it looks to one [01:16] So anyone have a clue why my machine freezes everytime I hit KDE's splash screen? [01:16] I mean, has it happened to anyone else? [01:16] RnFstRuckHrd: sorry, what do you mean? I've it doubled and one being my "bar" compressed? [01:17] James147: Out of curosity when you have apache/php/mysql installed does it give you the option to run the script ? [01:17] dominicdinada: the script? [01:17] markit? I do not understand? [01:17] * James147 hopes grub works this time [01:17] what are you asking? [01:18] RnFstRuckHrd: my mistake.. lol... dubbed is not doubled, lol [01:18] well run the file ?? basically when i install the packages am i able to run the files from anywhere or just the web folder? [01:18] 2.20am here [01:18] break - James147 - where can I get the 9.10 i386 desktop iso? [01:18] Noooo, dam grub :( [01:19] James147 - sorry about the grub failure :-( [01:19] RnFstRuckHrd: kubuntu.org should have it [01:19] from ubuntu.com [01:19] u mean ubuntu.com [01:20] dominicdinada: probally :) [01:20] its late i really should be in bed :S [01:20] James147 - where? [01:25] no kubuntu is on kubuntu.com [01:26] what are you looking for Typos_King i was answering RnFstRuckHrd's question [01:26] hence the reply was addressed to him [01:26] lol [01:26] dominicdinada: same here :P [01:26] * dante has a strong urge to throw his laptop out the window and cry in a corner [01:26] ok, RnFstRuckHrd, enabling the proprietary driver worked! Still a bit concerned about upgrading existing boxes, as they ar Dell too... [01:26] You are looking for karmic ? or lucid ? [01:27] well this desktop I am on right now is about to reboot to finsih its upgrade: I will ge tback on and let you all know if it works. But after the epic failure with my dell notebook I will not hold my breath [01:27] Good luck! [01:27] http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/9.10/ [01:28] MidGe - ya my 700M has no hope of running 10.04 (for the release that is out right now) my desktop is an Inspiron 530S. Like I said - if I reboot successfully after this upgrade in a few minutes I will get back on and report [01:28] dante - TY :-P I am sure I will need it [01:29] "searching for obsolete software..." [01:29] Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this driver is in the kernal yes? So if it's the fault of everything, my laptop is basically as good as a doorstop? [01:29] RnFstRuckHrd: He posted the kubuntu 9.10 I swore you asked about ubuntu 9.10 lawl [01:29] Midge - glad you got the driver working - hopefully us Dell fanatics will not ALL be left high and dry [01:29] is there anything special about the update from 10.04 beta? I really hope I see you guys soon! [01:31] a night? can't we call it a noon? [01:32] RnFstRuckHrd, my main box is a Dell Studio 1735... And I have had issues with each of the last three upgrades.. so I am a bit reluctant to upgrade my main box. Will install a backup server on my now upgraded box and back up my main one before attempting the upgrade I think. [01:32] Its 7:30pm here [01:32] James147: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2 [01:32] okay time to click restart - see you on the side [01:32] KAWABUNGAHHHHHHHHHH [01:33] go dude! [01:38] RnFstRuckHrd: "plasma-netbook" if your running the netbook edition [01:38] Once again - very disappointed [01:38] RnFstRuckHrd: one of them should work [01:38] okiedokie [01:39] RnFstRuckHrd: but I am far too tired to think now, nght all [01:39] not- desktop version. Searched anyways and nothing [01:39] are you able to start into safemode ? [01:39] Seems to be the general rule that if you have a Dell machine your 10.04 release date will be in a few months if at all [01:41] whoohooo 3 hours and counting on the upgrade (= [01:43] 3 hrs? [02:38] yeah, so it would seem [02:38] right now what is listed is HDA Intel MID [02:39] what does multimedia say for communcations [02:40] how do i find that? [02:45] my first one to the top would be pulse audio. [02:45] you may need to reboot to get the change to take effect. [02:45] alright [02:45] brb then [02:46] k [02:51] back [02:51] i have an update [02:51] what'cha got [02:51] It said that the ALC269 one doesnt work. [02:55] nice [02:55] lol [02:55] I would go ahead and try the next one. [02:55] when all else fails we can go back to the original config. [02:56] I also found it helpful to install pavdevchoose from apt-get or how ever you prefer. [02:57] it is the pulse audio device chooser. it can shed some light on what your sound devices are doing. [02:58] alright, ima reboot, then we can try pavdev choose. [02:58] what does it do, tell you which one works? [02:59] it should in stall the pulse audio volume control which has an input devices tab that show a metter for sound. [03:00] so evern if it is not connecting to the speakers you can ide the mic. [03:05] check system monitor [03:05] search for pack, apt [03:06] if you have any of those processes running and you package manager is not then they may have apt locked. [03:06] I don't [03:06] what do you mean by update clean? [03:06] just kpackagekit [03:06] wipe everything? [03:07] install in a new partition on the hard drive. [03:07] so i cant install over 9.10 [03:07] really I mean dual boot you current install with a new one of 10.04 [03:08] brb [03:08] you can... but if things go bad, you will be worse off then you are now. [03:08] how so? [03:08] if could kill your current install. [03:08] alright, so what if i just drag my mouse up there and hit tht lil upgrade button [03:09] do you have the important stuff backed up? [06:12] len_: my amd64 work automatic in eco mode [06:12] without any tuning [06:15] In desktop search settings is says it is indexing my home hold, but that's about 80MB, and could take forever. I'd like to know how far along it is, and how much work it will take to maintain the index. It's going to be chugging around in the backround all the time pinning the cpu needle, I'll just disable it. You should be able to set the max cpu usage for it though. It should obviously be considered a very low priority activity. [06:17] Landgraf_Ch, I'm using amd64 too. I'm not sure what that has to do with strigi though. My CPU is not "HOT" as it danger of overheating, it just running hot enough to cause the CPU fan to run fast enough to be annoying. [06:17] Usually I don't hear it. [06:49] I did not get you [06:50] In Ubuntu, we just open the client app and click on connect. Log in and it synchronizes all files and folders from the 'Ubuntu One' folder in my home directory. [06:50] We can just drag n drop folders there and they get syncd automatically. [06:51] I c, I don't know about this thing [06:52] It was installed by default in Ubuntu. Kubuntu had it in beta2 but now, it ain't here. [06:52] removed from the repos [06:53] do you want me to check main? [06:54] Can you try to install the package 'ubuntuone-client', and let me know what happens? [06:54] I have synaptic-kde [06:54] is it the same? [06:54] tell me if it tries to install the GNOME version or pulls the kde one... [06:56] sunk8: this might help - http://linux.digitalsp.com/2009/12/installing-ubuntu-one-on-kubuntu-910.html [06:57] I have "Ubuntu One client GNOME integration" [06:58] moetunes. That's the issue. ubuntuone-client-kde existed in karmic, but is not there in lucid! [06:58] o [06:59] kt. It seems that we don't have a kde client yet for ubuntu one. It doesn't even show at the packages.ubuntu.com [07:00] sunk8: I have this one, "Ubuntu One client GNOME integration" is it the same one? [07:01] kt, na that one would install the GNOME client. It requires nautilus. Integrates with evolution, tomboy and rhythmbox. Seriously there's nothing similar available for KDE? [07:03] sunk8: if you ask later there might be more folk with an idea - us and europe are sleeping atm [07:04] moetunes. Perhaps you are right. Thanx a lot guys. I'll try later. ;-) [07:15] hello..how do you mount iso images in kubuntu 9.10? [08:41] no kubuntu-netbook-desktop? [08:41] syon, is it the same as ubuntu? [08:43] what happens if i run it in proper desktop computer?) [08:43] well Mamarok afaik the looks is... similar in style... [08:43] neurre: it will also work, just make your desktop look different [08:43] comparison screenshots would be great [08:44] there is no panel IIRC [08:44] neurre: screenshots https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Netbook [08:44] neurre, not much you just get lower screenres, and a less usauble desktop [08:44] less usable in what ways? [08:44] cant i use the native screen resolution? [08:44] forge: i was hoping for some different setup for the resource hogging background deamons ;) [08:44] forge: that is a matter of opinion [08:45] syon: install the kubuntu-netbook-default-settings so you can tweak [08:45] syon I doubt it [08:45] kubuntu netbook as I said is bigger, so theres more of it than the normal desktop [08:45] oddly enough === forge is now known as ForgeAus [08:46] bigger? How that bigger? The screen resolution is different, else it is basically the same [08:46] Mamarok: yeah same in concept, different in real-estate [08:46] wicked. thanks guys for the quick help! maybe testing the Live ISO from a fast USB key will give me the cleanest experience [08:47] (by that I mean screen real-estate, as in as much space on the screen as you would otherwise have to place apps/icons/etc... [08:47] syon: also, for help about the netbook edition there is #kubuntu-netbook [08:47] and if I like it, I know how to transition. [08:47] * neurre thinks there is no such thing as fast usb key [08:47] [09:34] sorry for cross posting, but #kubuntu-netbook is still sleepy ;-) [08:47] ForgeAus: why are you sonegative about? It is for small screens [08:47] the netbook remix is about the only thing I think that might justify using mac-like menu's [08:47] if you don't like it, don't use it [08:47] Mamarok: sorry I wasn't trying to sound negative [08:47] well, you do [08:47] and yes I agree its designed for smaller screens [08:48] (which netbook computers generally have) [08:48] so if you have a high screen resolution it is definitely not for you, it is for netbooks, remember? [08:48] well [08:48] not for normal laptops [08:48] neurre you can try it nothing to stop you [08:48] neurre: there definitly are. especially compared to a (fast) HDD that has to go through LUKS on an atom ;-) [08:48] cant i customize font sizes and desktop the way i want it? [08:48] just be aware of the res thing, so you don't expect more out of it thats all... [08:49] syon, could you recommend me one? [08:49] syon, all i've tested have been a lot slower than HDD [08:49] neurre: well, my comparison was not entirely fair... i was talkig about an unencrypted USB key vs. a LUKS-encrypted HDD through a rather slow atom [08:49] if i put smaller size fonts and icons and remove unnecessary desktop thingies i dont really use, what is there different then between netbook and normal? [08:51] neurre: that's the magic of KDE, you can make it look the same [08:51] my desktop (on xp) just some quicklaunch icons on the left (widescreen) and thats it, i dont need - or want - anything else on my desktop [08:51] in that sense, i dont understand "why netbook edition" [08:51] just be aware of the performance restrictions of a netbook [08:51] neurre becuase a kde desktop isn't suitable for a netbook [08:51] neurre: it is for netbooks, not for normal laptops, how difficult is that to understand? [08:52] so they sliced it down to netbook so it fits nicer and works better for that type of computer [08:52] neurre: Price comparison pages usually have also some speed comparison: http://skinflint.co.uk/ http://geizhals.at/eu/ [08:52] mamarok, it is difficult to understand because i dont use much at all any other features that the quicklaunch icons :D [08:53] sorry I should say the normal default KDE desktop is designed for desktop pc resolutions, kubuntu netbook is customized for another comptuer type so it suits the screen res far better, and work more efficiently with less pixelspace [08:53] Mamarok: that wasn't negative was it? [08:53] yeah i know but im just nitpicking :) [08:53] :-D [08:54] ideally there would be just single edition which would automatically work in a good way in all resolutions [08:54] smaller resolution -> smaller fonts, less space wasted in gui things etc [08:54] neurre: at least with KDE you *can* change things you want them. this is something I miss with GNOME, really. [08:54] neurre, you should see the lengths the standard gnome-based ubuntu went to for its netbook remix [08:54] using a completely different window manager... [08:55] oh dear [08:55] (although I'm not sure if thats changed since then) [08:55] ForgeAus: Are they? Wow. Didn't know that. [08:55] forgot the name of it [08:55] started with h [08:55] no wonder im looking for kubuntu instead of ubuntu / gnome :D [08:56] but ive only used kubuntu 9 a little on my home computer [08:56] * syon fist of all updates to 10.04 and hopes that there is not too much interference with the additional KDE PPAs he pulled in. [08:57] (its essentialyl alternatives for metacity and gnome... [08:57] they're calling the window manager Maximus now I think, but it used to bee something else [08:58] 3 mins left to download kubuntu-10.04 .. :) [08:58] after the upgrade my main panel has disappeared. the plasma desktop is still there, but the panel is not [08:59] im going to install kubuntu on vmware image.. [09:03] :) [09:03] i got it now [09:03] ftp into release.ubuntu.com as a guest :) [09:04] then releases/kubuntu/arch/... [09:04] i need update my vmware first :/ [09:04] ... so - I started the update to 10.04 as I was requested yesterday and went to bed. This morning, the kde screenblanker was on, and I could not get it off with my bluetooth key/mouse. I rebooted, and now I only get the shell login. This leaves me with 2 immediate questions: [09:04] hang on... 10.04 first :-) [09:04] 1: How could a update be so royally f***ed up? [09:04] 2: How can I fix it. [09:04] FinnArild: What kind of GFX card do you have? [09:05] does it need a special driver? [09:05] such as newer ATI / NVidia cards? [09:05] eh ... whatsitcaled again - the acer REVOLUTION it is ... It ran fine on my previous Kubuntu [09:05] 10.04 out now. Is an upgrade without problems possible? anyone try it? [09:05] syon: it's a ION [09:06] is there are a list if known problems with 10.04 somewere? [09:06] FinnArild: hmhm, htat might need nvidias drivers [09:06] more information could be found from the shell through having a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log [09:06] syon: yes - it definitely does. But whyever should that be a problem? [09:07] syon: it ran fine just before the upgrade? [09:07] i.e.: log in, then "less /var/log/Xorg.0.log" [09:07] and check for any errors [09:07] maybe the driver was not properly installed through the update [09:07] this is somewhat tricky with the closed-source drivers [09:07] thats weird the default desktop for UNE (ubuntu netbook remix) looks kinda mac-like... purplish colour for the desktop anyway... [09:08] syon: failed to load module nvidia - module does not exist! [09:08] but [09:08] why does an upgrade fuck that up? [09:09] and [09:09] How do I fix it? [09:09] !language FinnArild [09:09] sorry [09:09] forgot the *** [09:09] :) [09:09] its ok [09:09] you could try to do an online update [09:10] syon: how would I do this from shell? [09:10] hang on.. if you did an update.. it should have all the newest packages already [09:10] sudo apt-get update [09:10] * FinnArild had a perfectly running kubuntu system [09:10] sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [09:10] now i guess i need to reboot a couple of times first in order to get vmware updated.. [09:10] 10.04 out now. Is an upgrade without problems possible? anyone try it? [09:10] ah [09:11] * neurre is going to make a fresh install.. [09:11] *dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. * [09:11] ah. that may explani things [09:11] just do that [09:11] ... which means that it wasn't quite finished when I turned off stuff [09:11] now - THAT was helpful :) [09:11] (but poor grandma trying to run her own linux ;) ...) [09:11] lol [09:12] hehe. tell her how to use IRC ;-) [09:12] and that we're nice folks ;-) [09:12] * FinnArild is not the grandma - it was just an image popping into my head :) [09:12] I know you are nice. It is me who is frustrated :) [09:13] FinnArild: if you were, you would have been the first grandma on IRC i know :) [09:14] syon: don't say that - my sister is actually on IRC and she's just become a grandma. [09:14] now my upgrade just bailed out with a non-helpful error message. "Error 1: bla bla bla" I guess I need more control. from the terminal :) [09:15] <14WAALGOI> hii guys.. i want to talk to someone who has done a fresh install of lucid and is free enough to help me with my naive questions/doubts :-) [09:15] FinnArild: I did not say that were no grandmas in IRC ;-) [09:15] :) [09:15] eagles0513875: is there a manual for the fancy "!" things somewhere? [09:16] So, any known trouble upgrading from 9.10? [09:16] Or should i risk taking a backup and hit the upgrade button? [09:18] ads I think I'm gonna wake a little longer. Personally.. Not many seem to have upgraded yet [09:18] greetings [09:18] ads you can check known issues in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes [09:18] kaddi: I am on Lucid since the last Alpha [09:19] ads: there should be no big problems [09:19] kaddi: same for me, i think. Backup takes a day ... [09:19] but a good idea is to use a separate partition for your /home, so you ca do a fresh install very easily [09:19] can* do [09:20] Mamarok: this laptop has a full encrypted harddisk, so i need a full backup anyway. [09:20] ads: yes, then you have no other choice [09:21] question is, if i use the following weekend or the weekend after [09:22] hello [09:22] ok well nowerdays its metacity + maximus, formerly was Matchbox + Hildon [09:22] sorry, lol old convo [09:22] was looking for the name Hildon, took till now to find it! [09:23] Mamarok: "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or failed. The error code is 3. Check your install" That started to happen after I installed my /home partition on a new partition and mounted it, weird? :S [09:23] ForgeAus: interesting! === ben___ is now known as Guest38843 [09:24] I have upgrade too Lucid, quite perfect. The only things I have to notice is the ugly boot. How can I change the resolution for grub? [09:24] oxymoron: did you create the partition and then moved afterwards? That's not really a good idea, you should backup your /home and restor it on the new partition [09:24] actually its not the netbook edition its the mobile remix... hmmm... maybe I got it confused... [09:25] ForgeAus: Hildon was a mobile phone desktop, not a netbook one [09:25] kde also has a mobile desktop too, I wonder if its related to its netbook desktop? [09:25] Mamarok: No, I created my partition before a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and then choosed it for my /home folder. [09:25] Mamarok: yeah, I just noticed that... [09:25] oxymoron: that should work out of the box though [09:26] oxymoron: I guess it'ŝ not related to the separate partition, but something went wrong with your installation [09:26] so the diff is Hildon (for mobile) vs Maximus (for netbook)? === 14WAALGOI is now known as Life_40 [09:26] ForgeAus: I don't know about the Gnome netbook, I only know that Hildon is the maemo desktop for mobile devices [09:26] actually, was, it's quite old already [09:27] Mamarok: Then another annoying problem. If I dont activate proprietary nvidia driver then I cannot activate desktop effects and use OpenGL for Cairo Dock (Required for transparency), but IF I do then plymouth resolution of logo and everything is going blurry and noisy, that didnt happen before when nouveau took care of my resolution and all. [09:27] yeah well its not gnome, its hildon, but Ubuntu used it for its mobile (and yes it is what maemo uses... ) [09:27] oxymoron: I don't have a NIVDIA card, no problem here iwth the free Radeon driver on ATI [09:27] I don't know what Kubuntu mobile (if there is such a thing) uses... [09:27] ForgeAus: maemo's Hildon is Gnome based, actually GPE based [09:28] Mamarok: There have been problem with nVidia since I dont know in 10.04 from alpha un upstreams. [09:28] ForgeAus: MeeGo I guess? So far there is no mobile version for KDE [09:28] Mamarok: IC, thats probably why Ubuntu used it for its mobile vers since its Gnome based... === Life_40 is now known as Brick [09:28] oxymoron: I know why I avoid NVIDIA since quite some time :) [09:29] Mamarok: I know why I avoided ATI for quite some time xD And this wasnt the case :D [09:30] http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?action=content&content=98312&PHPSESSID=cae ??? [09:30] oxymoron: file a bug, not much I can do about that [09:30] ForgeAus: what is this about? [09:31] Mamarok: Youre just lucky because ATI choosed OpenSOurce and the team took care of the drivers fast xD And you should actually thank nVidia for that, I dont think ATI would go OpenSOurce if they didnt feel like they were going under, which they almost did. [09:31] Mamarok: I dunno just... looking... learning, you know.. general knowledge I guess [09:31] Guys how is the new Lucid.. is nepomuk a pain .. i have heard it would be enabled by default... and it is actually a huge resource sucker [09:31] ForgeAus: have you seen the date? Also, this is by no means official, and it's apparently still Qt3, so totally obsolete anyway [09:31] Mamarok: And its not quite a bug, its a nvidia driver issue xD [09:32] oxymoron: which is a bug, or how else would you call that? [09:32] Brick: well, then just disable it [09:32] Mamarok: You can't [09:32] if you don't rely on filtering by tags you don't need it anyway [09:32] If you want to use KMail etc. [09:32] Mamarok: Incompetent programmers on nVidia team? :D [09:32] syon: rubbish, that is Akonadi, he is talking about Nepomuk [09:32] Mamarok: but is it really a resource hog in lucid too [09:33] Mamarok: Isn't that the same? Or at least intertwined? [09:33] syon: Kontact needs Akonadi, not Nepomuk which is the Semantic Desktop [09:33] syon: not at all, Akonadi is the underlying database structure [09:33] syon: thanks but nepomuk and akonadi are nowhere related [09:33] Brick: as I said, don't activate it then [09:34] unless you want to be able to filter by tags, then you need it [09:34] but I bet you don't have tagged your text files yet :) [09:34] Mamarok: cool .... i asked "is it? " and not" it is?" [09:35] Brick: yes it is, since it needs to index files to be useable === jfelipe is now known as jfelipe_afk [09:35] so either you reduce the number of files it indexes, which makes it pointless, or you live with the ressource drwaback, or you disable it [09:35] guys also please suggest me a cool efficient netbook.. I was thing of vaio but it is just not great and I seriously dont know if Kubuntu will work on it [09:36] Thanks Mamarok: [09:36] Brick: there is a Netbook edition for kubuntu [09:36] don't expect a netbook to run a full fledged KDE, netbooks are not as powerfull as a laptop [09:36] I know not the right forum to ask but still what would be a good netbook to have [09:36] if you want power, don't buy a netbook [09:37] Mamarok: I remember I had to enable Nepomuk for sth when upgrading to the latest KDE PPA on 9.10 [09:37] syon: certainbly not [09:37] -b [09:37] Mamarok: well the whole thing was a pain. maybe I superflously activated it. [09:38] syon: noo not possible.. i did upgrade to kde 4.4.2 from karmic and no no nepomuk was needed.. i tried activating it once but it was like eating up the entire thing.. [09:38] Mamarok: ok so what would be the most pwerful netbook.. although not the right forum to ask [09:38] folks, just one fact. I just checked: it was activated. and I did not do it because i was a semantic desktopper ;-) [09:39] well, maybe I felt lucky the other day :-) [09:39] syon: I give up...! [09:39] :-) [09:39] Brick: With what? [09:40] syon: sorry multitasking error.. it was supposed to be typed elsewhere [09:40] Brick: indeed, this is not the right channel to ask for hardware [09:40] Brick: No worries. [09:41] Mamarok: come one where else could i find the best geeks on earth , about a great netbook to run my Kubuntu(so does that make it seem like a Kubuntu question now.. i guess yes) [09:41] I no nothing about netbooks, but there are a lot of review sites out there, did you Google for it? [09:42] yes i did and no nothing much around...! by the way how is this new memenu thing [09:42] does gwibber run it here too or do we have choqok here [09:43] Brick: As a sidenote: The slightly larger non-netbooks with VIA Nano and AMD CPUs have more power, maybe supporting a better KDE feel. [09:43] so I read something about the KDE screenblanker being gone from 10.04 - does this mean I loose my beloved ascii-aquarium? [09:43] syon: thanks will check that out [09:44] Brick: KDE uses Choqok [09:44] Also - one of the things reported missing was bluetooth - does this mean I will be in bluetooth keyboard/mouse hell again? [09:44] so you mean to say memenu in kde uses choqok Mamarok: [09:44] FinnArild: it's just not on the CD, you can still isntall it kscreensaver and kscreensaver-extras [09:44] Mamarok: I update online [09:44] Brick: memenu would be what? The microblogging client is Choqok [09:45] CD is SO 1998 [09:45] Mamarok: This is weird, if I enable XRender instead of OpenGL everything works. But with OpenGL in system settings => desktop => advanced I cannot enable composite xD [09:45] FinnArild: well, you need it for a fresh install, that or a USB stick [09:45] FinnArild: and then you can feed all the fish there and possibly i can feed on them too [09:45] Mamarok: usb stick - now we're into this century, at least :) [09:46] now listening to mamarok's answer.. do we have something called the memenu in Kubuntu 10.04 like that in Gnome(Ubuntu) [09:46] FinnArild: Asciiaquarium is amazing, didn't know about it. [09:47] Brick: what is the memenu in the first place? I never use Gnome, how am I suppoed to know what you are talking about? [09:47] syon: so you too are getting some fish fries for me [09:47] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeMenu [09:48] Brick: there is a Semantivc Desktop plasma widget [09:48] Mamarok: you never told me you never used Gnome , so how was i supposed to know you never knew about it....yes that link from syon: just might help you a little [09:48] Semantic Desktop plasma widget.. what is that [09:49] syon: so - now update finished, I get to the login screen - and it tries to log in, crashes and presents me with the login screen again. [09:49] syon: do we have it in kubuntu the memenu [09:49] syon: which logfile to check this time? [09:49] syon: (nvidia seems to work fine) [09:49] Brick: no, memenu is not needed, did you read what I told you? [09:49] it's called openDesktop [09:50] Mamarok: what has open desktop got to do with memenu [09:50] *sigh* [09:50] Brick: do you really want to use KDE? [09:51] check that widget out first [09:51] Mamarok: how old are you... you get tired so soon :-).. relax dude checking [09:52] FinnArild: Mhmhm, that is very odd. [09:52] FinnArild: I'd suggest to keep checking the Xorg.0.log [09:52] Brick: you are asking questions about Gnome stuff in a KDE related channel, that's the point [09:52] but maybe this time the older one, I assume your Xserver is crashing after login [09:52] so if you want to use KDE, don't expect Gnome applications [09:53] syon: I'll tail -f it while logging in [09:53] ok [09:53] FinnArild: Anything interesting? [09:54] syon: not anything that pops out;: http://pastebin.com/Pum9yqvU [09:54] Mamarok: there is a difference between features and applicatiions...this memenu was designed by mark shuttleworth himself and Yes i would love to have that feature in KDE too .. and if you dont know please let others answer [09:55] syon: I have a feeling this is in KDE [09:55] s/in/with/ [09:55] in KDE 4.4.2 on Kubuntu 10.04, I see that almost every app throws this error on the cmdline (http://paste.ubuntu.com/425112/). is there something wrong with my install ? [09:56] the memenu is a gnome turd [09:56] go ask in #ubuntu [09:56] Brick: did you try to install it? [09:56] ... tailing kdm.log [09:56] and wether it is designed by god himself or not, it is a Gnome app [09:57] oook [09:57] also, since there are apparently no packages for it, I guess it doesn't even exist yet [09:57] Ender2070: would be great if you could say cheese and not interfere if you dont want to answer.. and yes you can leave the channel toooooooooo [09:57] so now I got some errors, just not sure what they mean: http://pastebin.com/kipaYhSV [09:58] Exactly Mamrok: finally you answered what i wanted to know [09:58] Brick: you should maybe rethink that you are in a KDE related channel, so asking about theoretical Gnome apps is not the right place [09:58] why [09:58] Brick: also insulting others is not the right way to start with, seriously [09:59] besides, Gnome sucks ... [09:59] FinnArild: behave :) [09:59] .oO(was that out loud?) [09:59] Qt apps > gtk apps [09:59] OK folks, this is a support channel, not about what is better or worse, please remember that :) [09:59] i guess good things should be learnt although i too agree that gnome sucks [10:00] Does someone know how to get the win key mapped? [10:00] ... so - what is ibus anyway? [10:00] Brick: for off topic discussions like that I suggest #kubuntu-offtopic [10:00] hingo, i'm trying to switch from ubuntu to kubuntu [10:00] Bucky: install the kubuntu-desktop package is a good start [10:00] but basically i don't know anything about kde! [10:01] Bucky: well, what do you want to know? [10:01] Mamarok: I appreciate your suggestion but did i ask you to discuss this with me [10:01] Brick: please stay on topic [10:01] lol [10:01] where i can get some info? for example: [10:01] @Mamarok: [10:02] what is nepomuki? and akonadi?? [10:02] Bucky: your example? [10:02] what exactly do you wnat to know? [10:02] want* [10:02] what those 2 name means? [10:03] Bucky: Akonadi is the underlying database structure, used by Kontact mostly [10:03] which is the equivalent of synaptic? [10:03] and Kontact is the PIM suite for KDE [10:03] do you think an "apt-get autoremove" and a reboot possibly could help? [10:03] Bucky: in the system settings, you have the option "Add/Remove software" for package isntallation [10:03] * FinnArild afks a bit [10:04] Bucky: Nepomuk is the base structure for the semantic desktop, used to creat an index allowing you to search by tags, not only by text or file names [10:04] FinnArild: Could you start a different session? [10:05] Mamarok, so they aren't run by the user, they are just a layer... right? [10:06] Bucky: indeed [10:06] if you don't use the Semantic Desktop though you should consider turning Nepomuk off, as it is using a lot of ressources [10:06] VMware Easy Install [10:06] hmm [10:06] nice [10:07] is possible to import mail and contacts from thunderbird to kmail? [10:07] Bucky: http://nepomuk.kde.org/ and http://pim.kde.org/akonadi/ [10:07] syon: I already asnwered that, no? [10:08] what tools there are to make kde application user interfaces? [10:08] Bucky: you should have a look at http://userbase.kde.org [10:08] sorry guys am back! [10:09] hmm [10:10] now i got a black screen :/ [10:10] anyone else installed kubuntu to vmware? [10:11] use a better hypervisor [10:11] yeah [10:11] both virtualbox and qemu work fine [10:11] better? [10:11] kvm +1 [10:11] virtualbox gave me bluescreens last time i tried it [10:11] i wasnt impressed [10:11] bluescreens? get off windows [10:12] yeah, well, blame the inferior Host-OS then ;) [10:12] :D [10:12] ya get off windows your bluescreens would go..lol [10:13] Mamarok, thanks for the suggestions [10:13] bye! [10:13] Bucky: you are welcome :) [10:14] wtf [10:14] after ctrl-alt-del i was able to boot to login [10:14] but keyboard is not working :D [10:14] hey im about to install kubuntu right now and i want to decrypt my whole device with aes . have made already this commands but there is always an error with the dm tables http://nopaste.info/8cfea8d6f9.html [10:15] how about kubuntu 10.04? [10:15] is it really good? [10:15] bbl [10:15] tc [10:16] cv: what a strange question :) [10:16] of course it is, else I wouldn't use it ;) [10:16] i've just join ubuntu community [10:16] hmm [10:16] cv:It is good.. use a live cd . check out .. if you like it .. go ahead [10:16] i have little exp [10:16] someone maybe an idea? [10:16] if i get to console login, keyboard works [10:16] how do i get back to graphical login from console login? [10:17] strg + alt+ f7 [10:18] can i have the application launcher as ubuntu in kubuntu? [10:18] keyboard still not working :/ [10:19] cv:hmmm i guess you wont need to have it as that in gnome.. the K menu is actually cooler and yes you can modify it as you want it [10:19] cv: well i suggest you have a look at the live cd first .. if you are totally new to it [10:19] lets see if vmwares virtual keyboard can help at all.. :D [10:19] Mamarok: I just thought that links to the upstream projects with loads of text, graphics and further reading might be helpful. [10:20] Mamarok: Think of it as an addition to your helpful one liner. [10:20] syon: well, I guess http://userbase.kde.org is a better link then, since Nepomuk's website is not exactly helpful [10:20] cv: there is a widget called launcher you can add to the panel or the desktop [10:21] cv: else there is krunner: Alt+F2, then type the name of the app or the function you are looking for [10:21] i know about them [10:22] cv: but you should have a look at the userbase.kde.org website, everything is explained there [10:22] ok [10:22] i'll do it [10:22] tks [10:22] :) [10:22] cv: you are welcome :) [10:25] Mamarok: IC. [17:19] hmm sounds bad, reboot maybe ? [17:20] isn't that a kernel panic? [17:20] i stumbled upon this thread while searching : http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=87227 [17:20] found the plasma-desktop tipp there, maybe it has further infos [17:21] Hello all - found this article yesterday, which explains why my upgrade to 10.04 yesterday killed my laptop. Apparently the Dell Inspiron 700M has been blacklisted? See article and link inside article ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1461029 ) Can anyone give me an idea if this is something that will change with future updates, or is my laptop stuck on Karmic for the remainder of its days? [17:21] Zhenya, it also says that if that doesn't work you should reinstall the kubuntu-desktop package [17:21] right [17:21] ok i'm going to work for a while [17:21] If when you reboot, there is no desktop, you may need to put plasma-desktop into your autostart list. [17:21] if it goes down i will be back and bother you [17:21] ~/.kde/Autostart or so [17:22] i have something urgent i need to finish first! [17:22] or via system config [17:22] good luck ! [17:22] thanks! [17:22] good luck Zhenya [17:22] i'm going to msg you so i can talk to you dirctly later [17:22] Delemir_: thanks! [17:22] i have a feeling i'll be back soon :P [17:24] Hi. I accidentally pressed some key or mouse butten that caused me to see thumbnails of all my windows, until I clicked one (new KDE on new Kubuntu). What key or mouse movement might that have been? [17:25] It's not alt+ because that shows only the active workspace [17:26] gerrit: if your mouse is in the top left then you can "push" into the corner to do that I think [17:29] kde185: indeed, thanks [17:32] hi everyone! [17:32] Why is it no sound after installation? [17:33] (sorry for language , i'm from Russia) [17:33] Why is it no sound after installation? [17:33] yes what shmidt said [17:34] NOOO soundd [17:34] saintly u havn't too, bro? [17:35] maybe sudo aptitude install pulseaudio can help? [17:35] Hey guys why isn't ardour working? [17:35] !no sound [17:36] !sound [17:36] If you're having problems with sound see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP3 [17:57] audio issues STILL [17:57] Hello [17:57] hi [17:57] I put kubuntu 10.04 lucid on my usb drive. [17:58] give it here. lol [17:58] And a blank screen appears after I enter either "install kubuntu" or "try without install" [17:58] Quick question: My Windows 7 computer has no username/passwords on its network shares. As in, when I access the shares from another windows box, I simply set my workgroup to HOME (the workgroup of the PC) and it lets me browse the shares, free of any login credentials. When I try to use Dolphin, it asks for a username and password. I set my workgroup in /etc/samba/smb.conf to HOME, and restarted, but dolphin still wants me to authenticate with a [17:58] username/password that I don't have [17:58] The same happens when I boot it on cd. [17:58] I have X1250 graphic card. [17:58] Is it a problem? [17:59] dont know what to tell ya muffin2 [17:59] This thing never works well. [17:59] Maybe I should stick to virtualbox. [17:59] Linux hardware support sucks [18:01] muffin2: have you tried different graphic configurations. I think it's F4 to set different graphics settings [18:01] cirillo : I didn't try. [18:03] muffin2: Try a different graphics setting. If that doesn't work, you may need to try the alternate CD, since that card requires proprietary ATI drivers which are not included with Kubuntu and must be installed manually [18:03] damn [18:03] radeonhd? [18:04] I don't know how to make kubuntu use radeonhd driver on console. [18:04] Anyway I try [18:04] maybe try aticonfig? Sorry, I'm an nvidia guy [18:05] sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg << set to use Vesa [18:06] he left... well, anyone here with samba knowledge? [18:09] Could someone explain this for me: "You don't have permission to access / on this server." (HTTP 403 Error)? :S In error log it tries to access ~/.htaccess but that isnt the document root for my enabled site, my root is ~/projects. I HATE THIS, same freaking problem every single time installing apache and never remember what the problem is. Could be some kind of permission porblems with root folder, but I have access to it, not [18:10] sure what user group apache2 uses? :S [18:19] Is www-data used this days? [18:21] hey i'm back ^^ [18:21] oxymoron: www-data:www-data is what the apache process effectively runs under, yes [18:21] testing [18:21] oxymoron: have a look at mpm-itk if you intend to change that. [18:21] been trying several things on my boot with grub, and finaly fixed something because i've get 10 secondes of intialisation text ^^ [18:22] GNU\colossus: I dont intend to change that, but I am trying to change my freaking Document Root by "a2ensite" command but www-data only point to that /var/www [18:22] i have a question : who is using kubuntu here and has the whole startup time long the initialisation text instead of a black screen ? [18:23] oxymoron: if you're after serving some static files via HTTP only, apache might be overkill for you anyway [18:23] Why do I get 404 messages when I try to ask a question in the #mysql session? [18:24] GNU\colossus: No I am after a LAMP-server for developing my framework. I got this freaking 403 Access Denied everytime I install apache2 once again and I hate it. I want to know how to solve it? [18:24] http://www.yeap.de/blog2.0/uploads/kubuntu/startup.png [18:24] does some body see that while booting kubuntu from the hard drive ? [18:24] oxymoron: the apache error log should provide more info on the specific reason. it may either be a permission problem in your file system, or a configuration problem for the URI you're requesting. [18:32] good afternoon :) [18:32] hey [18:32] has anybody installed / upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 ? How does it look? [18:32] yep [18:32] ive searched for that and all similar variants earlier and still find nothing, note im on kubuntu 10.04 [18:32] i did [18:32] GNU\colossus: Seriously I got really pissed off soon, I have did like everything it feels like. [19:06] ForgeAus: Hardy came with both KDE3 and KDE4 [19:07] eg: There was no remix [19:07] uh?... [19:07] it only came with one that I know of... prolly the release where they replaced KDE3 with KDE4... [19:07] (original may have been kde3 maybe kde4 is the remix?) [19:08] ForgeAus: Yes it was during the transition period, 8.04 came originally with kde3 [19:08] I think its more likely the opposite way around [19:08] kde4 was the normal kde3 was remix [19:08] Nope [19:08] genii? hmmm.. [19:09] your telling me if I get the basic hardy desktop.iso it has kde3? [19:10] Kubuntu has come with two different releases, one is the stable KDE 3.5.9 and the other one is a Remix Featuring the latest release of KDE 4.0. [19:11] 3.5.9? wait there was kde3 after 3.5.9 why hardy then? [19:11] wouldn't 3.5.10 (is there a later 3.5.x?) be better? [19:12] Genii looks like kde4 was the remix... thats good news.. . [19:13] the new release has a bug in the installer pressing whats this makes the installer crash [19:13] ForgeAus: The kde3 version which shipped with Hardy was something like 3.5.8 which you could get up to 3.5.10 by normal updates. then if you wanted kde4 the package names all had "4" somewhere in them [19:13] yeah like kmail-kde4 [19:13] and kpackage-kde4, etc... [19:13] ForgeAus: Yes, exactly [19:14] if you got the one without *-kde4 you had kde3 package... [19:14] BTW is there any plugin for kopete for IRC? [19:14] madura: not that I'm aware of [19:14] madura: Did you file a bug on Launchpad for that installer bug? [19:15] genii: not yet and i didnt recheck it [19:15] I don't see IRC as an option in kopete am I missing something? [19:15] hmmm 695mb... [19:16] thegeek0100: I don't think kopete has IRC [19:16] konversation or quassel has IRC [19:16] thegeek0100: yes :P but u can use konversation [19:16] (there is also java applets on the web, and other ways... like kvirc for example ) [19:17] that's weird as kopete calls out irc in its description in kpackagekit [19:17] meebo I think its called is a multi-im page, can't remember if IRC is there or not tho... [19:17] thats all assuming you want some kinda gui... you can always get irssi for a console-based IRC [19:18] thegeek0100: it had but the maintainer for thee irc plugin has not upgraded it to kde4 [19:18] <-- quassel [19:18] If id didn't gui I wouldn't be in this room. [19:18] madura thanks [19:18] thegeek0100: :) [19:18] still havn't got to try out the kde4 vers of konversation yet... [19:19] Quassel was interesting but far to X-chat-like for me [19:20] ForgeAus: well im on it right now but konversation is much simpler looking [19:20] yeah well the kde3 one was simple too [19:21] how can i install mp3 codecs for xine ? amarok keeps sayin phonon cant play mp3s [19:22] i think ununtu with gnome is way better ) [19:23] sorry Schmidt, Gnome makes me feel queasy... [19:23] Schmidt ... pretty much same as nauseus [19:24] i think kde is too laggy and big ) [19:24] ope [19:25] first of all theres the default chocolate browns and oranges... although themes can always be modded... [19:25] brb [19:25] hi poeple... short question: is there an easy way to get ubuntu one running on kubuntu lucid 10.04 ? [19:26] but then theres nautilus (for that matter even Thunar) and their traversal bar ... (note:Dolphin extended on that to be much like Windows Vista/7's breadcrumbs bar) [19:26] ubuntu one have web interface, so you can use it [19:27] ubuntu one? [19:27] Schmidt__: that's right.. but I am rather atlking about easy synchronisation etc.... and not starting firefox to gett access to ubuntu ne every time I want to use it... [19:31] uh as for integration with ubuntu1 howlymowwly, there is probably some but not as much as ubuntu (the default gnome one) [19:31] James147: there are ways in new motherboards to skip some tests [19:31] madura: its a fairly old comp now [19:32] madura: and i think it is set to skip most test, but i probally should check [19:32] James147: anyways any oldie would do ok with a linux distro :) [19:32] ForgeAus: any hint on where to look for it :)? [19:32] is there a way to skip age-based fscking for kubuntu? [19:32] anyone? [19:33] madura: its not old enough to not run win7 :) but i prefure kubuntu [19:33] James147: win7 is crap :P [19:33] ForgeAus: I think you ahve to set someoptions on the paritions [19:33] howlymowly https://one.ubuntu.com/features/ shows stuff thats integrated, you'd have to test out stuff like kubuntu equivs like kde-pim's mail/organizer instead of evolution ... for example [19:34] well comparing to other MS OSes its better but still... [19:34] madura: yeah, but i only have it for running games (and its a striped down version without all the blaot) [19:34] James147: thats good, why dont u try urbanterror? [19:34] uh howlymowly I'd be looking for a "contact us" link lol [19:34] when one update via terminal is there a port to open to make it go faster? [19:35] wait UbuntuOne has a client app... [19:37] cuznt: dont think opening a port would make it go faster.... keep in mind that the server are probally overloaded atm with everyone else trying to upgrade. If you can i suggest changing mirror [19:37] madura: not really the place to discuss that :) [19:37] eh [19:37] ty [19:37] howlymowly: there's a #ubuntuone channel [19:38] i figured as such i was almost done after 8 hours of update and i lost power [19:38] * cuznt goes back to the apt-get drawing board [19:38] kewl!! [19:38] James147: im busy downloading plasma themes :D [19:39] cuznt: the packagemanagment system will fist dl all the packages then instal so if it gets intrupted during the dl it can continus where it left off without redownloading much (but 8 hours, that seems alot) [19:39] howlymowly: I aren't looking to use it but it'll be interesting, the biggest problem is likely to be the dependancies of ubuntuone... [19:40] Scunizi: got vpn over pptp to work with knetworkamanger today :p [19:40] probably downloads lots of gnome bits for it to work [19:40] i thought as much but it is just as slow with the manager. i figured with no front end it might complete faster [19:40] James147: yea.. I've got pptp installed and pppd but I switched out knetworkmanager for WiCD because WiCD allowed me to set a static IP on my machine where knetworkmanager wouldn't [19:41] cuznt: the download speed wont change much via command line or gui front end... command line is just faster from start to finish :) [19:41] ForgeAus: the great thing about Ubuntuone in my opinion is, that it hold sthe promise of free contacts/notes/mail sync across many desktops including mobile phone (I have an android device for example) without compromising "data monster" effects like with google, facebook apple etc... [19:42] Scunizi: dont know how to vpn with wicd then :S havent really used it much [19:42] hey all, how can make a bootable usb install from iso if I'm currently running another flavour of linux? [19:47] madura: I know what you mean and compiz is working on this issue...but not yet :-( [19:47] because kde3 reqs a plugin for the panel and compiz really isn't necessary on kde4 [19:48] ForgeAus: KDE 4.4 [19:48] 0.9 will support [19:48] cuznt: close any packagemanagment system you ahve open (apt-get aptitude kpackagemanager) [19:48] rogersman1: thanks, when will 0.9 come? [19:48] you use (wm) -replace which reduces the functinality of the KDesktop because it replaces kwin [19:49] kwin is ok but i prefer compiz [19:49] madura: hehe they hate that question! ... tho to be honest kde native effects are pretty good...sure you need compiz? [19:49] i am trying to I get the error it can not get an exclusive lock. there is a command for that. [19:50] not taht I don't like compiz but it sits ok wtih kde3 or gnome or some other window manger... but KDE4 has its own desktop effects, etc... [19:50] cuznt: if you are sure no other packagmanament programs are running you can delte the lock file [19:50] cuznt: (cant remember where it is, one sec) [19:51] rogersman1: 1. i miss compiz :P 2. kwin doesnt have that reflex thing that we can attach a image and give the reflection from that..etc [19:52] madura: yeah, i spent ages trying this whole emerald, aurora, etc trying to get kde and compiz to work harmoniously with no joy...either wait for 0.9 or stick with kwin IMHO [19:53] 0.9 is a complete reworking of compiz-fusion from the ground up...so might be a long while until stable [19:53] rogersman1: yeap me too :P i even tried compiling 0.8.6 it loads up kde deco but theres a fat border :S [19:54] on the mean time i want that reflex plugin for kwin lol [19:54] cuznt: what was the full error message? [19:55] Unable to get exclusive lock [19:55] This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first. [19:55] madura: put in a feature request for kwin group if u like! [19:56] i got it thanks james147 [19:56] cuznt: :) [19:56] yeap i should put one on [19:57] I've been thinking of a few feature requests, like mostly for transparent window decorators, stuff like animation and/or filter-based stuff say colour-cycling ... [19:58] (or magnify) [19:58] madura: compiz projects looks pretty dead actually...web page hasn't been updated since Feb 2009! :-( [19:59] rogersman1: yea free project suffer that kinda non working periods [19:59] i think someone will make a patch or something in the future [20:00] lol I was checking out XFCE, compiz on that is a strange concept! [20:00] lol [20:00] low end desktop high end bling! [20:01] apparently XFCE has its own compositing anyway [20:01] i havent used it often [20:01] madura I could go lower... like say fluxbox + compiz? [20:02] ForgeAus: :P just get the new KDE [20:02] ForgeAus: flux and compiz are both wms - so you can't run both [20:02] doesn't look like Canonical are going to take in the Fluxbuntu team as official anytime soon... oddly enough [20:02] they seem to be looking to a LXDE (Lubuntu) and possibly an Enlightenment (e17) ubuntu (something like elbuntu) [20:03] good point moetunes I should have known better :) [20:03] hi everyone.. does anyone here know of a nice file sync service for linux and android? (karm crashes plasma-desktop about every 15 minutes for me) [21:03] doleyb: its a newer version so 'should' be more stable (ie crash less) but sometimes something can break and it get worst (although not as often) [21:04] doleyb: I havent noticed many problem with instability in it yet, but it hasnt been out for very long :) [21:06] if I use nvidia drivers from their website on karmic, will I have problems in upgrade to lucid? release notes mention something vague about this, but not details [21:06] * rogersman1 away to the gym ... bbl === dendro-afk is now known as dendrobates [21:07] Installed 10.04 on eeepc 1000H but Wifi won't work... anyone ideas?? [21:09] may be worth a shot for you as well, at least for troubleshooting [21:09] yea [21:09] are you able to get that machine online via ethernet? [21:09] yes [21:09] sudo apt-get install wicd [21:10] thanx will do now' [21:10] the install will remove the knetworkmanager and plasmoid [21:10] reboot, and the wicd client will run [21:10] service is /etc/init.d/wicd [21:10] help? [21:15] @boby could you upload you Xorg.0.log from /var/log when kdm does not start? [21:15] then I need to go [21:15] will you be here [21:16] @body if it does't take too long ;-) === dendrobates is now known as dendro-afk [21:16] ok back in minute [21:17] how do one get ppa's from the programs installed through the cli and kpackagekit? [21:17] i dotn have to visist every programs site and get them do i? [21:18] hi [21:18] Is anybody using nouveau with kwin here? [21:19] can help me? [21:19] jaime just ask the question some one might be able too [21:19] ryann: did the reboot wifi still not working.. wicd says bad password.. the same as knetworkmanager.. every time i install a new Kubuntu I have the same probs... :( [21:19] I really need this to work because tomorrow I will travel the world... so I need my netbook [21:19] xorg.o.log is huge to paste it here [21:20] @boby use pastebin or something like that [21:20] !pastebin [21:20] For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [21:22] how to use this pastebin? [21:23] @boby you can just upload the file there and will get a short url [21:23] Does anybody know the keyboard shortcut to maximize a window (at least the terminal window) in kubuntu 9.10? [21:25] nothing happends [21:25] ok can I paste here part of xorg [21:25] tell what to looking for [21:26] Is there a line starting with EE? [21:26] boby on the bottom there should be a button to submit [21:26] im trying to update my kubuntu to lucide 10.04, but i cant because i have the 127 code [21:27] yes when I pressed it askes me to do I want to transfer file and I say yes [21:27] what ten [21:27] then* [21:27] hello! [21:28] boby after you submit it then copy the url for the page [21:30] I press submit, then I press ok when it askes me to transfer file, and then nothing happends [21:31] I've installed kubuntu 10.04. When booting up, I got a black-screen, but i got rid of this through replacing "quit splash" in the boot entry with "nomodeset". Now I was able to boot, but I'm directly droped into tty1, X is not starting. There I don't have Internet also (simple ethernet-connection, should work automatically). VIa the netroot-shell in recovery mode i installed the nvidia-driver for my card. Now I'm able to start the X-Server via [21:31] what to use for image? [21:39] kubuntu restricted extras wont install [21:40] is this commonly? [21:40] @body the log does not show any error so X should be running. I'm not sure what could be wrong if X is running and kdm does not... How did you get this file? [21:40] swien? [21:41] hund [21:41] what do you mean? [21:41] Got it! it finally works. [21:42] @body You started the computer. Then it either stuck or showed a desktop. Did you manually start X after it stuck? [21:43] @boby before you grabbed the file? [21:43] ok after boot (every time now happends) it offers me login [21:43] after i type my user and pass [21:43] it pffers me again login [21:43] pidus: You can assign a shotcut key to windows so that they gain focuse and move to th frount when its pressed [21:43] then I do console login [21:44] and login succesefully [21:44] do: killall kdm [21:44] and then startx [21:44] pidus: System settings > Window behaviour > Window spific [21:44] could someone help me with a dolphin problem I've been encountering for some time? I'm not sure if it's a bug or just a misconfiguration. In Dolphin's column view, you used to be able to navigate by typing in the first few characters of a directory and hitting enter to open it in the next column over. This used to work in 4.1, now with 4.2 it will work only for descending one directory level... [21:44] that's it [21:44] then further enter presses have no effect. [21:44] @boby what happens if you do restart kdm? Are you able to login then? [21:45] didn't try [21:45] oops, sorry I meant it used to work in 4.0 through 4.3, but now in 4.4 it doesn't work. [21:45] should I do now? [21:45] just run sud restart kdm [21:45] sudo [21:45] ok [21:45] James147: I was looking for a shortcut to maximize/minimize a windows. Could configure it at System Settings -> Keyboard & Mouse ->Global Keyboard Shortcuts->kwin->maximize window. [21:45] be back in a minute [21:46] James147: though, what you suggest will also help :-) thanks for that. [21:46] Henson_D: looks like a bug, getting the same behaviour here but noticed that if you move the mouse then press enter it works [21:48] James147: thanks for the confirmation. I get the same behaviour here. I can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet, it's been around for a long time and has persisted through many 4.4 updates. [21:49] i'm back [21:49] James147: and I imagine it would drive anyone who uses column view mad :-) [21:49] Henson_D: one quick question, what mouse focus policy do you use? [21:49] James147: ahh, very good question. I use focus strictly under mouse. [21:49] @boby wb [21:49] after sudo restart kdm offers me again login screen and when I enter my pass it offers login again [21:50] I kill kdm [21:50] and startx [21:50] and here I am [21:50] @boby do you have any non standard pam-settings? [21:50] what is that?\ [21:51] Henson_D: have focus follows mouse :) try changing it to the default one and try it [21:51] @boby is the tool ubuntu uses to manage you logins. If you don't know what it is you probably did not break it [21:53] Henson_D: nop, same behaviour with click to focus [21:53] one more thing: when system is starting my kubuntu screen is in low resolution [21:53] those blue screen with kubuntu sign [21:53] image is corrupted [21:53] James147: yeah, I'm getting the same behaviour with all of the others. Click to focus and Focus Follows Mouse seem worse in that you had to put the mouse pointer into the new column, instead of simply moving the mouse. [21:54] Henson_D: Think you should submit a bug report :) [21:54] James147: will do :-) Thanks for your assistance. [21:55] it is shown in very low number of colors [21:57] what now? [21:59] @boby I've got no idea what could be wrong [22:01] hi [22:02] anyone here who has the problem with Fn key to change the backlight under kde 4.4? [22:02] ok conclusion: when booting I can't boot when it offers me login screen, then I need to do console login and from there kill ldm and startx. It is clean instalation of 64 bit kubuntu. And my system has ati video card [22:02] how do I create a custom application launcher on the kde panel? [22:02] if this helps [22:04] i'm getting audio from amarok and kopete, but not from wow in wine or flash. [22:05] I just want to add another application to the panel, how do I do that? [22:05] It is not in the "official" list [22:05] g0th: miniprogram unlock [22:05] hmm? [22:05] g0th: then add miniprogram [22:06] jschall: what sound output method is wine or flash using? Amarok and Kopete are probably using ALSA, but if Wine and Flash are using OSS then the audio device will be blocked by ALSA. [22:06] wine is using alsa and flash would be using alsa. [22:06] jschall: or perhaps your KDE audio system is using PulseAudio, in which case the same thing will happen. [22:07] no pulse. [22:07] jschall: hmmm, I don't have any more ideas, unfortunately. [22:07] robinking623: there is no package named miniprogram? [22:07] @boby sry. I've got no idea what is wrong. [22:08] bye [22:08] amarok and kopete have been running a while so i'm thinking it might be something stopping new programs from getting sound? [22:08] ok thx anyway and sorry for my english [22:08] bye [22:08] g0th: Right click kmenu > edit menu (or run kmenuedit) and you can create a launcher for the menu... after that you cna drag it from kmenu to the panel [22:09] hi [22:09] jschall: is it only wine and flash that is affected? Are you able to start another program that outputs sound? [22:09] ah so I first have to modify the menu before adding anything to the panel? [22:09] g0th: its the easiest way i think [22:09] Henson_D: i can't think of another program [22:10] g0th: althernitivly the widget "quick launcher" might be able to do it [22:10] thanks [22:10] dragon player works [22:10] mplayer, or aplay, or audacity? [22:10] hmm I didnt find quick laucher? [22:10] dolphin works [22:10] jschall: mplayer, or aplay, or audacity? [22:11] Henson_D: i can get audio apparently [22:11] g0th: umm, quicklauncher seems to need a menu entry as well [22:11] Henson_D: just not in flash [22:11] Henson_D: or wow [22:12] g0th: right click panel > panel settings > add widget > Type: quick [22:13] jschall: not sure about wine but you could try purging flash and installing it from adobes site [22:14] jschall: open up a terminal and type lsof -n | grep "/dev/snd/pcm" and see what shows up. [22:15] dolphin [22:15] closed dolphin and nothing [22:15] there is just quick access and quick launch [22:15] hmm and I don't find the menu anywhere [22:15] jschall: it reports that dolphin is using your sound device? [22:15] I mean I added my program to the menu but I dont find this menu anywhere [22:16] Henson_D: dolphin 24877 jschall 25u CHR 116,7 0t0 4028 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p [22:16] Henson_D: then i closed dolphin and it went away but wow still doesn't work [22:16] g0th: to edit the menu run "kmenuedit" or right click kmenu and click edit menu [22:16] Henson_D: but wow is accessing it if i start it [22:17] well if you've closed dolphin, maybe you have to kill the dolphin process, because it seems as though process 24877 is still using your sound device. === ubuntu is now known as meins_amd2 [22:17] James147: I found this [22:17] James147: but I didn't find it to choose from in the panel [22:17] jschall: well if you've closed dolphin, maybe you have to kill the dolphin process, because it seems as though process 24877 is still using your sound device. [22:17] npviewer also accesses it [22:17] I can just edit it but not actually choose the stuff I edited [22:18] hello I have a problem I can make a ping via terminal eq. google.com, but when I am trying to open site at webbrowser then I can not - it is offline ... how can i solve it? I am connecting to internet via router [22:18] g0th: drag it from kmenu to the panel [22:18] it is not in kmenu? [22:18] Henson_D: amarok also accesses it and works, but nothing else does. [22:18] g0th: it should be if you added it using kmenuedit [22:18] hmm but a lot of stuff is not there [22:18] Henson_D: http://pastebin.com/4g6SH8hi [22:18] that is in kmenuedit [22:19] I must be in the wrong menu somehow [22:19] Henson_D: amarok is working, nothing else is. [22:19] and everything is extremely slow [22:19] whenever I update the system configuration it takes several minutes [22:19] on my core7 computer [22:19] and it already crashed several times [22:19] jschall: I don't know what to suggest. Perhaps the volume level is down or mute is on. It looks like wow is able to use your sound device, but why sound is not coming out, I am not sure. Has sound worked in the past? [22:19] not the best experience so far ^^ [22:20] g0th: what version are you running? [22:20] Henson_D: you know, i'm not quite sure. i think it did. [22:20] lucid [22:20] Henson_D: it worked in ubuntu with pulse before i swapped to kubuntu [22:20] g0th: my kubutu is really really stable [22:21] hmm now it restarts again from 0% [22:21] Henson_D: i'm pretty sure flash was working too [22:21] once it finnished it starts again from 0 [22:21] already the third time now [22:21] g0th: try disabling strigi (system settings > advanced > desktop search) [22:21] lucid fresh install anyone successfully have a tv set up via svideo without vertical hold loss? [22:21] Henson_D: i'll restart my computer and see if that fixes it, not that it'll keep it from coming back =/ [22:21] jschall: so you just upgraded to kubuntu and now you're experiencing these problems? [22:21] the system is frozen at the moment [22:21] i cant do anything [22:21] Henson_D: yesterday i think i had it working in kubuntu [22:21] it just says "updating system configuration" [22:21] Henson_D: i'm restarting computer [22:22] jschall: ok [22:22] from 0% to 100% then again from 0% etc [22:22] James147: i have forgoten to tell. i reinstall the my kubuntu, and the problem with usb is gone [22:22] I canceled it [22:22] g0th: not sure why ti was doing that :S [22:23] javaws doesnt seem to be working either [22:24] what is the best jre? [22:25] there is gcj-4.4-jre and gcj-jre and openjdk-6-jre and default-jre [22:25] isn't there a "sun jre"? === me is now known as Guest60880 [22:27] g0th: they removed (or moved) suns jre from the repos as they thourght openjdk was stable enough [22:27] anyone know why my bluetooth kb and mouse doesnt work in lucid [22:28] hmm [22:28] g0th: think it might have gotten moved to teh partener repositories [22:28] couldn't this cause problems with certain applications? [22:28] but I also have the partner repo and I dont see it [22:30] is there a repo for kdevelop 3.5.x or is compiling the source the only possibility to get the stable kdevelop working in kubuntu 10.04 : g0th: yuo, its in the partener repos, jsut enabled them refreshed and its there [22:30] Guest60880: I think kdevelop is in ppa:kubuntu-ppa/beta [22:31] Guest60880: ^^ thats the 3.9.x version sorry : [22:32] ok thanks [22:32] Guest60880: 3.10.x even :) [22:32] :> [22:33] Henson_D: still doesn't work. [22:33] Guest60880: just add one of the older repositories, like jaunty, and install the 3.5.x version from there. I've done it and it works. [22:33] anyone else have blutooth logitech devices working [22:33] hm i think the packetnames are the same - is a downgrade possible? [22:34] jschall: try completely removing pulseaudio from your computer (unless you need to use it). When I first installed kubuntu I had a similar problem. KDE was using pulse, so all of the KDE apps worked, but nothing else would. Once I got rid of pulse KDE started using alsa and things worked again. === tek is now known as Teknical [22:34] Henson_D: pulseaudio is not installed. [22:35] Guest60880: it should be. If you add the other repository, refresh the packages, and take a look in aptitude, then you'll be able to select the older version. Just de-install all of the 3.9.x packages first, then select the 3.5.x package and it will bring in all of the other 3.5.x dependencies. [22:35] Henson_D: pulseaudio: Installed: (none) Candidate: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu14 [22:35] is there any way to install the nvidia driver without making my splash screen go ugly? [22:35] jschall: sorry, I don't know what else to suggest. [22:36] should be more specific, is there any way to avoid the ugly splash screen bug with nvidia drivers on 10.04 fresh install [22:37] jschall: what if you exit KDE then start X using a failsafe mode. That way none of the extra KDE things will use your soundcard. Then try starting WOW and see what happens. [22:37] also my spash screen looks like this: http://challinger.net/photo.jpg [22:38] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-default-settings/+bug/551290 [22:38] is it already in updates? [22:38] jschall: haha, so does mine :-( [22:38] Henson_D: the splash screen has never displayed properly for me. [22:38] Henson_D: it always screws up in a different way [22:38] jschall: ahh, it used to work properly for me. For some reason the colour depth or map must be wrong. [22:39] Henson_D: every release of ubuntu/kubuntu has had a messed up splash screen for me and they've all been different [22:39] jschall: hmm, my splash screens have always worked until 10.4 [22:39] so there seems to be a problem with the splash screen huh [22:40] the screen going ugly is caused from the nvidia driver install, at least what i can tell from all the googling ive done [22:40] i can confirm on this clean install my splash is still nice looking as on live cd, nvidia driver not installed yet [22:40] Teknical: you mean the nvida logo screen? [22:40] no, the kubuntu splash [22:40] so has it been fixed when you run the update? [22:40] this is a reported bug, google kubuntu 10.04 ugly splash [22:41] fully updated last install then did nvidia drivers, then updates again .. still ugly splash [22:41] Teknical: if it's the boot screen, then it shouldn't be using the kernel's VGA driver. [22:41] Teknical: does it happen for all spalsh screen or jsut the default one? [22:41] default kubuntu splash, the blue with white dots [22:41] i don't care about the splash screen, but i want my flash audio to work =/ [22:41] Teknical: try other spalsh screen see if they work [22:41] darn it means i cant install 10.04 now untill this one is fixed [22:41] some fixes include modifying the grub settings, but they still dont look 100% right [22:42] i cant believe why the developers missed this major bug [22:43] before trying other splashes i was hoping to hear of some resolve before I put the nvidia driver in again [22:43] jschall: try starting X with a light-weight window manager, or the failsafe screen then starting WOW. Maybe KDE is doing something that's causing the sound device not to work. [22:43] Henson_D: i don't know how to do that. [22:44] Teknical: anyway when you updated maybe the update mirror did not receive the update yet [22:44] jschall: at the login screen, there should be a menu that allows you to select a different type of login. One of the options should be "failsafe", which will give you only an xterm. Just remember to switch it back to KDE when you're done, otherwise you'll get the failsafe login next time you try to log in. [22:45] i tested my last install not more than an hour ago, to no avail with no updates [22:45] try updating from from a server in the us [22:45] it would be logical to assume that an hour later the problem still exists [22:45] Henson_D: brb [22:45] Teknical: well means its not reached your server repo yet [22:46] Henson_D: failsafe fails. [22:46] Henson_D: very safely. [22:46] Henson_D: it flashes white and goes right back to the login [22:47] was on a us server, trying main server [22:47] Teknical: sorry its been commited but not released [22:47] hi there, just installed kubuntu 10.04, i wanna get rid of the kde cashew, anyone knows how to do it ??? please ? [22:47] fix pending? [22:48] Teknical: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+milestone/lucid-updates [22:48] says Fix Committed [22:48] faissal: I think there is an application of kde-apps.org that can do that [22:48] yjx mate [22:48] thx [22:48] Teknical: should be in the updates-testing repos then [22:49] jschall: maybe try installing a window manager like "fvwm" and logging in using that. I have to go for dinner now, so best of luck getting this straightened out. [22:49] I've got a black screen after boot and after the bootsplash in Lucid Lynx. I ugraded from Karmic. Anyone? [22:50] well, the upgrade didnt treat me very well [22:50] video problems, apps crashing [22:50] kicker panel size issues [22:50] that fix is from Alessandro Ghersi and it replaces some files. I have tried this .. it makes the ugly splash go from bad to slightly better, the splash still shows up in likw 1024x786 rather than native res. this is more of a temporary workaround .. and not a great one [22:51] it appears ive explored all my options for now [22:51] DarkriftX: WElcome in the club [22:51] Teknical: i think you better file a report then [22:51] * Henson_D chuckles [22:53] thank you for your help and time though vadi01, looks like the end of the road for now. I know a few others still pushing this bug .. something will turn up [22:54] I didnt know there was a club :( [22:54] id have put off the upgrade [22:55] clean install for best results imo, my laptop didnt like the upgrade .. but the clean install was fine [22:55] hello [22:55] my only bug/issues at the moment are cosmentic [22:55] Can anyone here still running 9.10 confirm a doc error for me? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades/Kubuntu says you can upgrade to 10.04 from System Settings -> Add and Remove Software -> Software Update , but it DOESN'T offer the upgrade to me. I have the system tray upgrade offer icon and update-notifier-kde -u works, but Add and Remove Software doesn't. [22:59] skierpage: did you click refesh on the updates page? [23:01] james147 Oh yes, many times. I get bug fix updates (some pg library yesterday, another tzdata today), but not the "Distribution upgrade available". [23:01] skierpage: hmm... did you update all the package? [23:01] skierpage: upgrade ^^ [23:02] i can not play .avi files with dragon player,... dvd worked fine but i have TOO many avi files,.. can some one help? === tek is now known as Teknical [23:02] zus: have you isntalled kubuntu-restricted-extras? [23:03] james147, Ahh well, if it works for some people and the other options work for me, I'm not going to bother filing a bug. Maybe it's something in my Settings > Edit Software Sources. Thanks for checking. [23:03] James147, i have. [23:04] zus: have you closed and restarted dragon player since you installed it? [23:05] James147, dragon player was already there, and i ve rebooted even [23:05] zus: hmm... try installing kaffeine and see if that works [23:06] James147, one sec === me is now known as Guest91814 [23:08] Full Upgrade to 10.04, here we come! === john_ is now known as DeadmanIncJS [23:08] skierpage: good luck :) [23:10] (I used usb-creator-kde to make a live USB of kubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso to confirm it runs and my Firefox and Thunderbird pre-releases work) [23:10] James147, same problem, audio plays but video is not, in fact the screen is not there i see my desktop but i see the window frame its self [23:10] where do one install drivers in kubuntu lucid? [23:10] K350: drivers for what? [23:11] zus: not sure why its doing that... you could try purging and reinstalling kubuntu-restricted-extras (or maby just ffmpeg) [23:12] James147: graphic-vard [23:12] ok ill have a look into that then [23:13] K350: jockey-kde should be able to install graphics drivers (at least for nvida and probally ati) [23:13] James147: Ah, thanks a lot, Really appruciated:-) [23:14] James147: well no rutins found...ah..well........ [23:15] Does the 10.04 upgrade log what it does? It's listing 1400 packages to remove/install/upgrade, I need to save that but I can't select the entire list :-( [23:21] Does Gnash work ? [23:22] i think i can stop the torrent now transmission says 32.93 share ratio for ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso [23:22] :) [23:22] wtfplymouth: check mb [23:23] wtfplymouth: and d ont forget md5 sum [23:23] a little bit over 22 gb ;) [23:24] das: dosent the torrent client do a m5d sum check anyway? [23:25] James147: not sure i usually check anyway [23:25] wtfplymouth: :) i am barly getting to a ration of 1, although ktorrent says there are 56 seeds and no peers [23:25] Hello everyone [23:25] I installed ATi drivers from thier website and restarted and I don't think it is working. Can someone help me? [23:25] anyone ever use gnash succesfully? [23:27] No one? hmmm :( [23:27] unholyskorn: check hardware drivers and see if any proprietary drivers are active [23:27] How do I do that? [23:27] I typed in aticonfig --initial -f in terminal and it says no adapters found or whatever [23:28] No supported adapters found [23:28] unholyskorn: run jockey-kde and see if there are any drivers listed in there [23:28] unholyskorn: k-menu/applications/system/hardware drivers [23:29] unholyskorn: (jockey-kde == "Hardware drivers") [23:29] No proprietary drivers on this system [23:30] I installed the ati drivers fine, and restarted, but when i run ccc:le it asks for my sudo pass and then just disappears [23:30] unholyskorn: havent had much luck with ati on linux but it does work and they are getting better [23:30] ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run was what I installed [23:30] I have a ATi X800XT [23:31] Hi there, I'm having troubles trying to play audio using VLC, I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 [23:31] anyone? [23:32] Any ideas das or James147? [23:32] unholyskorn: sorry, never used ati cards before :p [23:32] arrg [23:33] Is having no proprietary drivers on the system a good thing or a bad thing? [23:33] the ati install said everything installed ok [23:37] logicode, vlc works for me. I'm not sure what it uses for audio output by default, I don't think it uses System Settings >Multimedia [23:37] This is incredible, having issues just installing a damn display driver... [23:38] logicode, If I start vlc from the command line (vlc /usr/share/sounds/k3b_success1.wav) it prints some errors about pulseaudio (which isn't set up by default), but plays fine. [23:40] Hello all [23:40] anybody know how to enable desktop effects using nvidia-current on 10.04? the driver is working fine but not when it comes to effects. [23:41] Can someone tell me how to get my other partitions to mount with out asking for the password everytime. And I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 [23:42] What's the name of the 10.04 upgrade program for the purpose of filing bugs? It's running "python /tmp/tmpipXc12/lucid" but that's not it ;-) [23:43] Can anyone tell me how? [23:44] gonna try restarting [23:44] coreberserker, I'm no expert but the file /etc/fstab lists what partitions should get mounted. You could as root edit that file and add an entry to it. [23:44] coreberserker: just noticed that :S seems to only be on internal drives (well at least not usb flash drives) [23:45] Right [23:45] If you do an upgrade to 10.04 on a 9.04 system using grub legacy will it convert it to grub 2? 9.04 changed to grub 2 for new installs, but kept grub legacy for upgrades. [23:45] coreberserker: if it is an internal drive you want to mount i would suggest what skierpage said and add it to /etc/fstab [23:46] Anyone know how to get ATi drivers to work? [23:46] coreberserker , what partition are you trying to add? E.g. the program ntfs-config has some way of adding a Windows NTFS partition. There might be other UIs. [23:47] my desktop effects have been disabled and I cannot enable them. I have nvidia-current. am I missing something? [23:48] skierpage , its an NTFS partiton, but it mounts just fine, It just asks for a password to mount it every time but didn't ask for a password in 9.10 [23:48] BTW, to answer my own question it looks like the 10.04 program is dist-upgrade and it writes out a lot of info in /var/log/dist-upgrade. [23:48] coreberserker: I would add an entry to /etc/fstab to auto mount it (or to not automount ir but allow user to) [23:49] anyone else have problems with suspend? [23:49] Anyone know how to get ATi drivers to work? [23:49] how do i uninstall dolphin ? [23:49] coreberserker maybe I'll run into that when I complete 10.04. The line that ntfs-config adds to /etc/fstab looks something like "/dev/sda1 /media/WindowsCdrive ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0" [23:50] panix_: sudo aptitude remove dolphin not sure what depends on it though [23:50] i hate dolphin [23:50] why cant i have konquere like the good old days [23:50] I hate this POS operating system that I can't even install video drivers on... [23:50] coreberserker , try running `sudo ntfs-config` first, and back up /etc/fstab [23:51] what ATI card do you have ? [23:51] X800 XT [23:51] they dont like proprietary drivers because it screws up theyr spyware [23:52] So if you own an ati card you cant use kubuntu? [23:52] you cant install the driver from AMD ? [23:52] That is what I did [23:52] installs fine, restart and it's not working [23:52] run the ccc program, asks for a password and then just exits [23:53] i bet it works fine with deabian stable [23:53] debian stable [23:53] Teknical: u there? [23:53] run aticonfig and it says no adapters are installed [23:53] unholyskorn, I use the default free ati drivers (ati_drv.so, radeon_drv.so) from Ubuntu 9.10 and they work fine. To see what your system is using, search for '.drv' in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I assume you rebooted. [23:53] i bet it works like charm [23:53] cheers all. [23:53] Teknical: any news on your nvidiea? [23:55] nothing [23:55] been googling, still havnt installed the driver [23:55] unholyskorn, you need to run lmod [23:56] ? [23:56] lsmod ? [23:56] modprobe to see if the module is installed [23:56] my desktop effects in 9.10 worked great. Now in 10.04 I can't even enable them. I downloaded nvidia-current. whats missing? will it help I get this message in the glx dialog of nvidia-settings "Fail to query the GLX server vendor." [23:57] they are trying to piss of the gamers i know the linux comunty [23:57] I've a kubuntu 10.04 alpha3 that recognizes automatically my 1920x1080 screen, while last kubuntu does not :( xrandr does not show that resolution either. 9.10 does either. Is it a known issue? Did they broke somehting? [23:57] This kubuntu is a pos [23:57] you cant have fun with games anything other then bashing at promp is forbiden [23:58] i think the proprietary driver dont like the aimbots work so good [23:58] whats a pos ? [23:58] Ok, skierpage i looked in xorg.0.log and it has a whole bunch of crap about ati [23:59] pile of sith :) [23:59] Thanks skierpage and James147 but I figured it out =]
