brandonban6ubuntu 10.04 install disc takes me straight to what appears to be a live session, prompting me to login. I don't have an account, I want to install ubuntu 10.0400:12
phillwbrandonban6: do you not see the screen saying 'try ubuntu, install ubuntu, test disk' etc ?00:14
brandonban6phillw, no.. I get a blank purple screen, and then the new ubuntu logo, and then the new login screen. Reboot same thing, re-downloaded and re-burned, same thing. Using desktop 32 bit.00:15
brandonban6I'm running 9.10 on it right now just fine. I wanted to do a clean install but sort of scratching my head on this one.00:16
phillwbrandonban6: my bet is either your iso, or the cd is corrupt. I know I get told off for this, but to save me retyping everything in, if you pop over to http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36  that has a quick how-to on checking the iso and the cd, along with other tips00:19
phillwif you have a cd-drive lens cleaning kit (or one for a dvd player) now is a good time to use it.00:21
stlsainthey i have a question smart people....03:03
ddecatorasking the question right away is faster than waiting for a response then asking the question =)03:05
* phillw and less of the "smart people" :P03:06
* phillw speaks only for self03:06
paultaghey stlsaint03:08
paultagstlsaint, what can I do for you?03:08
paultagstlsaint, not saying I am smart, rather I would like to try and help :)03:08
paultagBRB, but leave it03:08
stlsaintsoooo...if i have my seperate partitions setup for /,/boot,/data, and i do upgrade via terminal...will it still not touch my other /data partition03:09
paultagstlsaint, aye03:14
paultagstlsaint, it only does stuff via dpkg03:15
paultagstlsaint, it _should_ leave the fstab alone as well03:15
stlsaintpaultag: if i lose data i expect full system recovery support out of you!!!!03:21
phillwstlsaint: have you not heard of backups :P  >> runs03:27
stlsaintphillw: yea yea...i have crons that run backups!! :P03:29
phillwstlsaint: you can get cream for that03:30
stlsaintO_o03:30
ravibnHi! I need help with the unwanted processes listed in the system monitor tool. How do I prevent these processes not to start when I reboot?03:36
ravibnanyone here at all???03:37
phillwno, we're all busy waiting for some one with a bit of patience ;-)03:38
ddecatorunwanted processes like what?03:42
stlsaintddecator: hes gone03:42
ddecatorstlsaint: thanks for pointing that out, i have quits hidden =p03:43
terrellsmneed help with mouse themes in lucid03:46
* phillw it may just be me, but when someone asks a question and you're writing a reply that is more than two words, does it ever nark yo uwhen they exit before you answer?03:46
terrellsminstalled KDE desktop then removed it.. and now cant get the KDE theme off03:46
phillwterrellsm: i have an app for that :-)03:47
terrellsmHi Phill..I tried the xcursor but it doesnt seem to work at all with lucid03:48
phillwterrellsm: at the bottom of the page (pure Gnome) http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde03:48
phillwthey're good at psychocats :-)03:48
ddecatori just flinched when i read "an app for that"03:48
terrellsmthanks!!.. checking it out03:49
phillwddecator: i so 'love' apple (not)03:49
phillwi was just answering a question in #lubuntu and still had the page loaded03:51
ddecatornow i do love it when that happens03:52
terrellsmquick question phill... this code includes the && apt-get ubuntu-desktop... all i need is the mouse theme changed... is this going to kill all of my other theme mods?03:53
phillwtoo true, it doesn't often happen that way, usually it's "I saw that the other day -- where was it?"03:53
ddecatorchanging the mouse theme is easy03:54
phillwterrellsm: I've never used it, all I know is that the stuff from there is pretty darn good. (as in excellent), if you are in doubt post to the ubuntu thread03:54
ddecatorterrellsm: are you on gnome?03:55
terrellsmahh ill give it a shot.. I got most of the KDE out removing the packages individually, but this seems to be a complete list03:56
terrellsmi am on gnome... i use KDE for some things at work on mandriva, so i wanted to check it out for lucid... but i like gnome WAAAAY better03:57
phillwterrellsm: i like lxde, but that's the beauty of *buntu, we all get our own flavour :-)03:57
ddecatorterrellsm: you can change the mouse theme in System > Preferences > Appearance, just choose your theme and select Customize, then change the mouse theme. due to a bug, you may not see it change until logging back in, or possibly after a restart03:59
terrellsmddecator.... you rock04:00
terrellsmi never went all the way into customizing the theme04:01
ddecatorterrellsm: no problem =) you might still have some kde packages lingering around, but they shouldn't interfere with anything. you can always do something like what phillw suggested to make sure they're all removed04:02
terrellsmi did run the command and got the few remaining packages... having to reinstall skype and vlc.. but no biggie04:03
terrellsmphillw tell me about lxde?04:04
stlsaint!lxde04:04
VotebotFactoid lxde not found04:04
stlsaintterrellsm: what do you want to know about it?04:05
terrellsmi am looking for screenshots... not finding much04:06
phillwterrellsm: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu04:06
terrellsmwhats the bennys of lxde over gnome04:06
terrellsm?04:06
terrellsmthanks phillw04:06
stlsaintterrellsm: lxde is WAY lighter than gnome04:06
ddecatoreven lighter than xubuntu, isn't it?04:07
stlsaintreally good for low resource systems04:07
terrellsmsuper cool....thanks!04:08
* phillw now don't ban me for this, but a bit more about lubuntu can be found here http://forum.phillw.net/viewforum.php?f=18 (It's my baby forum)04:08
terrellsmthe hypertext from xchat isnt opening the page in a browser... is there an option that i need to enable?04:10
* phillw uses pidgin, sorry04:11
* ddecator uses irssi04:11
ddecatorc+p?04:11
terrellsmalright.. you guys rock pretty hard, and i dont know if this is the right place for this question but i have having issues with synce04:14
ddecatornever even heard of it tbh04:15
terrellsmwhen i run the msynctool --sync -synce-sync... i get "DEBUG:SynCE:disconnect() called04:17
terrellsmMember 1 of type synce-opensync-plugin just disconnected04:17
terrellsmMember 2 of type evo2-sync just disconnected04:17
terrellsmAll clients have disconnected04:17

terrellsmDEBUG:SynCE:finalize() called04:17

terrellsm"04:17
phillwterrellsm: http://www.synce.org/moin/FrontPage04:19
terrellsmi have pretty much combed the site and the wiki and the forums.. just wondering if any of you had any insight04:20
ddecatornot any of us on right now. you can try #ubuntu, but idk how likely you are to get a response in there =p04:21
phillwterrellsm: never use dit04:21
ddecatorotherwise you can try again in here some other time. we all have different schedules04:21
phillwterrellsm: they have a support mailing list, you might try that04:22
terrellsmthanks guys.. i will!!.. last question for the moment... is there anyway at all to change the login screen to not display the username in lucid?04:23
terrellsmfrom what all i have read it seems unlikely04:23
ddecatorbut still requiring a password?04:23
terrellsmddecator: yes04:24
ddecatorubuntu tweak just updated with new login tweaks for lucid, one says "Disable user list in gdm" but idk if that'll do what you're looking for04:25
terrellsmoh sweet... i just herd about ubuntu tweak yesterday..04:26
ddecatorit's one of those unofficial must haves04:27
stlsaintsorta like ultamatix04:27
stlsaintbut thats ol' school though :D04:27
terrellsmawesome! thanks!.. what is the realistic need to run an anti virus? i know they are there but just wondering?04:29
ddecatoron ubuntu, to protect windows users you email ;)04:29
terrellsmddecator: lol.. so you know the package name for tweak?04:30
ddecatorhttp://ubuntu-tweak.com/04:30
ddecatorit's not in the official repos04:30
terrellsmgot it04:31
terrellsmyou guys know of any good books for a newbie? i read the pocket guide and i just got Ubuntu Secrets04:33
ddecatorthe ubuntu manual =D04:34
ddecatorhttp://ubuntu-manual.org/04:35
ddecatorfree to download, new to lucid04:35
terrellsmcool.. thanks for the help guys.. good night04:35
ddecatornp. g'night04:35
phillwddecator: that is one kewl book :-D04:41
ddecatorphillw: i know right?04:42
phillwI'm hoping to get involved with the doc team now 10.04 has settled down04:43
ddecatorthe manual team is planning something for maverick, i can't remember what exactly. i think it will be a condensed pocket guide type thing, but i may be wrong04:43
phillwddecator: i've been on the mailing list for a month or so, I'm waiting for them to decide on the format (writing tool) that is going to be used. There seems little point me learning one, if they decide to use a different one. With the rush to get the docs out for 10.04, a decision had not been taken.04:47
ddecatoryou could always help out by providing screenshots and such. they made that program that makes it semi-automatic =)04:48
phillwI know, but i've also been busy (hindering) the release of lubuntu. Hopefully things will quieten down for a couple of weeks once the mad rush to finish the 10.04 documentation has finished.04:50
phillw* Documentation team to push post-release fixes to the lucid branch,04:51
phillwfreezing on 17 May04:51
phillw* Translation templates will be pushed to Launchpad on 17 May04:51
phillw* Translators can work to complete new (and existing) translations up04:51
phillwuntil 11 June04:51
phillw* Documentation team plan to upload a new ubuntu-docs package to04:51
phillwlucid-updates on 12-13 June.04:51
phillwAs I'm a n00b, I'd be more of a hiderance than a help at this time04:52
ddecatoreveryone has to start somewhere. chime in and ask what easy work they have for newcomers to the group04:55
phillwI have been (re)learning how to write in english again.04:56
ddecator...see now i had assumed you were a native english speaker. you're doing very well =)04:57
stlsaintif ubuntu was to catch some virus or spyware what would be the symptoms04:57
phillwjust trying to format http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=85 into something resembling a structured format is a task after all the years of sloppy writing04:57
stlsaint??04:57
phillwstlsaint: pictures of Bill Gates appearing?04:58
stlsaintmeh, not quite...what about slow reacting system...sketchy typing...etc etc04:58
stlsaintVery slow system....04:58
ddecatortyping is more likely graphics related04:59
phillwissue top from the terminal and see what is running04:59
ddecatormalware may have extra processes running and could slow your internet speeds04:59
phillwddecator: malware? that'll be a first.04:59
ddecatorphillw: it was included in some gnome-look themes05:00
phillwooh, let me guess, you need to use root privalidges to install this05:00
stlsaintnothing too out the ordinary05:01
phillwstlsaint: you may know this person ... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51081205:01
ddecatorif you're unsure, get clamav05:01
phillwclamav has exactly zero effect on linux, it is purely there to filter out windows viruses on mail servers.05:02
ddecatorit's the only one i know of, haha05:02
phillwand can be used to scan windows areas05:02
phillw^^ read bodhi;s post ^^05:03
stlsainthaha, yea i have read his post (he used to be my mentor for the team.) ;)05:04
phillwstlsaint: i was referring ddecator to it ;-)05:04
stlsaintoh05:04
ddecatoroh, look at that..05:05
phillwstlsaint: my 1st contact with bodhi was when i messed up a ssh connection to my rig and got tunnelled into and out of05:08

ravibnHi! I was needing help with the movie player on Karmic 9.1012:46
lukjad86Hi ravibn, what can I help you with12:47
ravibnit pauses in between while playing any format movies12:47
ravibnif I blow it up to full screen some parts of my lcd screen freezes up12:48
zeroseven0183ravibn: Hi! What movie player? Is it Totem?12:48
mohi1Maddeth, here he comes back =]12:48
ravibnit is totem movie player 2.28.2 version12:48
lukjad86ravibn are any of these movie files MKVs?12:49
ravibnit is using gstreamer12:49
ravibnI was trying to play an avi format movie12:49
zeroseven0183Have you tried with other media players like VLC or Banshee?12:50
ravibnyes ! I installed the vlc player and it also does the same thing freezes up the screen12:50
ravibnlots of pauses in betwn12:50
lukjad86ravibn Hm, is your computer new or old?12:51
mohi1ravibn, whats your RAM size?12:51
ravibnwell ! it is a P 4 with HT techn12:51
ravibnRAM is 1.5 gig12:51
zeroseven0183Hmmm.. Could be a graphics card-related?12:52
zeroseven0183How about playing videos in YouTube?12:52
ravibnThats what even I am concerned bcos when I installed the OS it never asked for any graphics driver12:52
ravibnmy intel board 865 gbf has some onboard extreme graphics chips12:53
starcraftmanravibn: what is your graphics card? Did you install a driver for it? You might be stuck with 2d acceleration which is admittedly poor at handling hires video.12:53
starcraftmanah, hmmm, intel.12:53
ravibnnope the grp card is on board12:54
zeroseven0183Yup. You can check if you have some driver updates in System > Administration12:54
zeroseven0183then select Hardware Drivers12:54
ravibnthe updates I have done it recently12:54
ravibnit does not show up any driver there "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system"12:56
starcraftmanravibn: aye, hmmm, hardware drivers is mostly for nvidia/ati cards. I think the intel ones are mostly open source.12:57
ravibnbut Intel advices to install drivers for my board http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=948&DwnldID=9227&lang=Eng&iid=dc_rss12:58
ravibnI do not know if this is going to install and fix the problem12:58
starcraftmanravibn: I don't think so, likely just a confifuration problem. I'm not an intel expert though, never had a copm with it.12:59
ravibnintel has discontinued support for this board so whatever they had created and left earlier is all that is left13:00
zeroseven0183Can you run the desktop effects?13:00
ravibnyes! I can rotate my desktop13:01
Maddethmaybe a codec issue then13:01
zeroseven0183Hmmm... Just the video/movies13:01
zeroseven0183yeah13:01
Maddethhave you got all the necessary codecs installed13:01
ravibnyes! only the videos are the problem13:01
ravibnthe sound that comes with that is played correctly13:02
starcraftmanravibn: wait so compiz itself works?13:03
starcraftmanhmm13:03
ravibncodecs were updated some time back last week with apt-get13:03
Maddethmight need more codecs13:04
Maddethas apposed to updated13:04
ravibncan u guide me on this codecs thing then13:04
MaddethI can try, 2 secs13:04
starcraftmanravibn: if you installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package you should ahve all codecs needed.13:04
starcraftmanApart from that, some restricted windows codecs available from medibuntu repo.13:05
ravibnhow would I chk that ?13:05
Maddethsupd apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extra's13:05
Maddethextras*13:05
Maddethsorry, too much grammar :p13:05
zeroseven0183Did you try disabling Compiz effects before watching a movie?13:05
Maddeththats a good idea zeroseven018313:06
ravibnno I did not disable anything13:06
starcraftmanravibn: did above reply that its installed?13:06
ravibnhang on one sec13:06
zeroseven0183ravibn: Please do try13:06
Maddethhow are you starcraftman, long time no chat :)13:06
ravibnyes! it installed restricted extras13:07
zeroseven0183Installing Ubuntu Restricted Extras is almost an automatic to me whenever I install Ubuntu to a machine. Might sound a newbie thing but it really helps.13:07
starcraftmanMaddeth: Oh I'm alright, just relaxing a bit.13:09
starcraftmanMaddeth: had a long semester.13:09
Maddethravibn, try it now13:10
Maddethstarcraftman, glad I don't have to study anymore13:10
ravibnYes! hang on I am trying to play that movie13:10
starcraftmanravibn: I just had a thought, I think I know how to fix this. You have vlc yes? Open VLC > Tools> Preferences > Video > Output > Change the type of video processing. Try openGL for instance or one of the other means.13:11
starcraftmanravibn: try playing a video after each change to test.13:13
ravibnthanks ! now it is playing properly but when I play format like mkv the screen freezes still13:13
ravibnin VLC the output was set to default13:14
Maddethmay need annother codec for mkv, let me have a look, try starcraftman's advice first through13:14
Maddethravibn, ^13:14
starcraftmanMaddeth: I doubt its a codec problem, else he'd be getting absolutely no video out. More likely I think is that he's having trouble decoding mkv since it's a very intesnive compression format.13:18
Maddethravibn, I had a look and mkv files should automagically be supported my vlc13:19
Maddethstarcraftman, agreed13:19
Maddethstarcraftman, ravibn, try as zeroseven0183 suggested and turn off compiz when playing that file13:19
ravibnthe audio is great but the video only pauses in betwn for the mkv format13:19
ravibnhang on let me do that13:22
ravibnI am in compizconfig settings manager . what all I need to unchk  in this to turn this off ?13:25
ravibnjust go into pref and then uncheck "Enable integration into desktop environment" ???13:27
kermiacravibn: you need to goto system --> preferences --> appearance13:28
kermiacselect "visual appearance" tab & then "none"13:28
ravibngot it hang on13:29
kermiacah, that should be "visual effects" tab13:29
ravibnmkv format plays perfectly now after disabling the visual effects. But my m2ts format still freezes up13:34
ravibnno audio and the video comes in like ppt presentation for this m2ts format video13:35
Maddethnever heard of m2ts before ravibn let me ahave a look13:37
Maddethravibn, from what I have read it will need to be converted to another format13:40
Maddethravibn, I found instructions on post #9  here : http://www.highdefforum.com/computers-htpcs/47653-computer-freezes-avchd-mts-sony-hdr-sr1.html13:40
ravibnput plays very well in windows vlc player13:40
Maddethmake a backup of the original file, and rename from m2ts it to a .ts13:43
Maddethravibn, ^13:43
ravibnok! let me try that13:43
zeroseven0183Boy, you have lots of video files on different formats :-)13:44
ravibnno these are demo discs that I have for the LCDs which will test the video o/p13:46
ravibnnope rename the file to ts did not help13:47
Maddethbugger13:47

starcraftmanLeAstrale: I was abducted by aliens!18:53
LeAstraleWell :) I was abducted by my job ;)18:53
starcraftmannub: ah, but you do have the labtop in front of you eh? Alright, if you wanna check wireless before installing, download and burn an iso then boot up live into the cd and from a terminal run: lspci > test.txt18:54
starcraftmannub: that should include your wireless hardware, if its intel should work fine.18:54
starcraftmannub: if not listed use the command: lshw > test.txt18:55
starcraftmannub: latter is a complete dump. Lil more tedious to read.18:55

LeAstralestarcraftman: Well ofcourse you would have to say that.. :)18:57
nubthis is the problem i think i have been having...18:57
starcraftmannub: hmmm, have the exact model? I can look it on a few sites.18:57

nubi researched and found that its a realtek driver but I cant find the actual component.18:59
nubI had this problem before and gave up18:59
DiegoTcstarcraftman, do you know of any application for cleaning the hard disk¿?19:00

starcraftmanPlus give drivers for windows if you want to dual boot. They don't sell windows licenses at all though.19:02
starcraftmannub: ah, alright was just offering suggestion. I was having same trouble trying to find a wireless that'd work fine and I inevitably just bought from system.19:03
nubyeah I know about these people thanks for the offer though.19:03
nubthey also made "macbooks" until they were sued?19:03
starcraftmannub: no.... that was psystar19:04

starcraftmanWell if you say so, good company if you want. Alternatively, I just thought of something.19:05
nubbut I think these were mac os compatable?19:05
starcraftmanFriend of mine was having trouble with his wireless and bought a usb wireless stick that worked wonders on linux.19:05
nubyeah I was also thinking of that .19:05
nubso realtek is a PITA? with ubuntu?19:05
starcraftmannub: well in general Intel chipsets offer best compatability, broadcom is the worst and others are somewhere in the middle.19:06
nubok19:06
nubthis may be the component19:08

starcraftmanThis I know works fairly well. Consider it a backup maybe?19:12
nubyeah maybe.19:12
nubwelp thanks for the help and input.19:13
starcraftmannub: np, hope you get a good notebook for linux. Come back if any installation woes.19:13
nubyeah I will have to test the wifi with the live disk19:13
nubyou have a link I can look at that will show me how to test it?19:14
starcraftmannub: you mean from a live cd on the gateway or for the usb stick?19:14
nubon the gateway19:14
starcraftmannub: well I imagine just bringing whatever ubuntu you want to boot and try it out. There should be a wireless to test connection to. I don't have a list of offline diagnostics if that's what ya mean.19:15
starcraftmanThe lshw or lspci command will get you the model of all hardware.19:15
starcraftmanIncluding wireless.19:15
nubyeah no biggie. I will get it figured out thanks again.19:16
nubis there a live download for the latest 10.04?19:16
starcraftmannub: yup, already out. Just pick a mirror, you want ubuntu so here is alright. > http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/ubuntu-releases/10.04/19:18
