c3lwhat practical implications does realtime kernel have?05:21
holsteinhe c3l05:28
holsteinhey*05:28
holsteindo you record audio?05:28
holsteinreal-time kernels give lower latency05:29
holsteinuseful for example if you have a MIDI keyboard connected05:29
holsteinand you press the key05:29
holsteinif you have high latency05:30
holsteinyou can hear the sound after you press the key05:30
holsteinOR if your overdubbing05:30
holsteinand you play along with a track you have already recorded05:30
holsteinwhen your playing, your lined up05:31
holsteinBUT when you listen back05:31
holsteinyou'll be late by however much the latency is05:31
* Blank__ wonders if someone should update the topic to mention the release of the 10.04 LTS05:47
holsteincan jussi do that?05:50

holsteinhuman: im not sure, but it shouldnt matter06:25
holsteinxenodrox: what audio interface?06:25
humanthanks06:25
xenodroxthe windows thing is slightly unrelated. i'm gonna dual boot so i don't have to jump through hoops for audio and use ubuntu studio for all else.06:25
* holstein is a JACK fanboy :)06:25
xenodroxholstein: really? i just can't figure the thing out.06:26
holsteinjack and ardour06:26

holsteinxenodrox: if you run the update-manager06:29
holsteindoes it say there is a new version available?06:29
xenodroxgives option to upgrade to 9.0406:30
holsteinit only been available for about 24 hours06:30
holsteinhmmm06:30
xenodroxthink i found the fix06:30
holsteindid you look at 'software sources' ?06:31
holsteinthats the only place i have ever changed that setting06:32
holsteinunder there06:32
holsteinyou got an 'updates' tab06:32
holsteinat the bottom should be 'release upgrades'06:32
holsteinyou should select 'long term support releases only'06:33
holsteinTHEN you should see an upgrade to 10.0406:33
xenodroxholstein: are you talking about in update-manager?06:33
holsteinnah06:33
holsteinshould be in system-administration06:33
holsteinsoftware sources06:33

holsteinid probably just do a fresh install before id do that06:39
xenodroxalright. well, i'm about to head to bed, so i'll set a download and leave it at that for the night06:41
xenodroxthanks a lot, man!06:41
LinuxGuy2009Ubuntu Studio is only available as a alternate disk? No live dvd huh?07:20
LinuxGuy2009This due to unusable performance of some tasks when using a live environment?07:22
LinuxGuy2009Im guessing.07:22
_guitarman_LinuxGuy2009: it's just laziness07:36
_guitarman_<is totally joking>07:36

Blank__jussi, good job :)09:40
jussi:)09:40
c3lholstein, ahh thanks. does it have some negative implications otherwise? I mean, since a realtime kernel isn't used in most of the different distros out there..11:16
c3lor anyone who knows something about realtime kernels. Also, what is the difference of StudioUbuntu, and Ubuntun + the package ubuntustudio-desktop?11:17
astraljavac3l: ubuntustudio-desktop is the meta-package which sets the application selection for Ubuntu Studio.11:26
c3lastraljava, so the difference between those is that I dont get the realtime kernel? and do you know what negative implications a realtime kernel has? why does't every distro run realtime kernels?11:30
astraljavac3l: I'm not the expert on that, but you can always install realtime kernel by yourself too.11:36
astraljavac3l: At times the realtime kernel hasn't played well together with proprietary video drivers, but that might not be true anymore.11:36
c3lah I see, well thanks =)11:37
valkyrJust installed Lucid. Where's software centre / add/remove programs gone?12:30
rlameiroubuntustudio doesnt come with add/remove software12:32
rlameiroyou can install with the synaptics package manager12:32
rlameiroyou even can install the software centre on synaptic12:32
c3l# apt-get install program   . works fine afaik ;)12:33
astraljavaI'd prefer aptitude, though.12:33
rlameirowell12:35
rlameiroto software center12:35
rlameirosudo apt-get install software-center12:35
c3l# aptitude12:35
rlameirolol12:35
valkyrYeah, I don't really need it but I just wondered. I see it in Synaptic anyway, thanks.12:35
valkyrapt-get isn't so good when you're just browsing the available packages to see if there's any that look interesting ;)12:37
c3lvalkyr, why? $ apt-get cache search program12:38
c3lworks great12:38
c3land if you dont like typing that much, add an alias to ~/bash.rc so that "apt-get cache search" has an alias like searchpkg or w/e you want12:39
c3lsame applies for all commands of course. so you can do that with the "sudo apt-get install" too12:39
astraljavac3l: Just to clarify, it's apt-cache search <foo>.12:42
c3lups, yes. thanks12:42
valkyryeah, but that just gives package names, no? I need the descriptions...12:43
astraljavavalkyr: When you find a package, try apt-cache show <package>.12:45
valkyrhmm. ok. I guess that might come in useful.12:48
JeffBongiIs anyone available to help me troubleshoot my almost freshly installed ubuntu studio?18:34
JeffBongiWhen I hit play on rhythym box, nothing happens and there is no error. When I record in ardour it's very slow moving (gets through a couple seconds after a minute or so) and does not record any sound, my internal microphone (which worked fine on 9.10 not-studio) isn't working, and when I play a file in lmms nothing happens and there is no error18:41
JeffBongiI followed the complete guide located here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu%20Studio%20Upgrade%20from%20Ubuntu18:42
