power-insideokay... i dont want to install it now .. just want to see the disk cost it takes08:24
knomeyup. it will ask you if you want to continue or not08:24

Sysi-s means simulation08:24
knomeSysi, but the simulation output did not calculate the disk space used...08:25

power-insideyes the simulation did not show disk space08:25
power-insideok thanks... xubuntu desktop was 623 MB.. will this vary according to different systems?08:25
knomeit can somewhat08:26
knomedepends if you already have/don't have some of the packages installed08:26
power-insideSo, if I download ubuntu 10.04 and apply xubuntu on it, will it be same as xubuntu 10.04 release exactly?08:27
knomeno, then you'll also have the gnome packages installed08:27
knome!purexfce | power-inside08:27
ubottupower-inside: If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »08:27
knomethen you should run the first row on that page to get a plain xubuntu installation08:28
knomeand even then it might differ a little from the default xubuntu installation from cd08:28
power-insideoh08:28
knomenot much, and you wouldn't notice the difference by just looking08:29
power-insidewell the apps would right?08:29
knomeyes, the apps would match08:29

knomeno, i don't think so...08:31
knomeyou can also download xubuntu 10.04 disk ;]08:32
knomeif you are willing to do clean installs08:32
knomei think you can somehow upgrade with a cd as well08:32
power-insideyes but I dont want my kubuntu on another system to be 9.10.. want the LTS one08:32
moetunesor use the minmal cd and then add respective desktops08:32
moetunes!minimal08:32
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD08:32
knomemoetunes, that would still mean 2×downloading the whole system08:33

Power-Insideyes i know some programs have difficulty using net under wine09:37
Power-Insidelike the nimbuzz chat messenger for windows simply gets disconnected every 15 seconds or so under wine09:38
Arpad2are ther some alternatives to wine?09:38
Power-InsideCrossOver is a commercial version of wine that provides support09:39
Arpad2ok09:39
Arpad2and what is virtual box?09:39
Power-Insidevirtual box is quite simmilar..09:39
_Techie_!virtualbox09:40
ubottuvirtualbox is a x86 !virtualizer. A !free edition is available from the package 'virtualbox-ose'. A non-free edition is available at http://virtualbox.org for most Ubuntu releases (help in #vbox) - Setup details at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox09:40
Arpad2ok09:40
Arpad2and are the system requirements similar to wine?09:40
Arpad2ive got a very old pc09:41
Power-Insidein that case, virtual box would not simply be the right choice09:41
Power-Insidevirtualization would need a better pc09:41

Psilocybin_ElfOk cheers18:45
Psilocybin_ElfWas referring to the final image18:45
Psilocybin_Elfnot the beta18:45
Psilocybin_ElfThanx18:45
charlie-tca27th was not the beta, it was the image tested for final18:46
Psilocybin_ElfSo the one dated from the 29th should be ok?18:46
charlie-tcapeople decided that was the final image, and kept it. It had to be rebuilt, though.18:46
charlie-tcaYes, the 29th is the good image18:46
Psilocybin_ElfWicked, cheers :-)18:47
Psilocybin_ElfGonna install it on my bro's laptop18:47
charlie-tcaAt the most, if you install and have dual-boot with windows, you may have to run 'sudo update-grub'18:47
Psilocybin_ElfHe won't be dual booting so it should be ok18:47
charlie-tcato be safe, on the first boot after installing, you can run that if you want to.18:47
Psilocybin_ElfOk :-)18:48

mikoIt's a single user system.18:50
charlie-tcago to terminal, try using 'sudo -i' and hit enter.18:51
mikowill do.18:51
charlie-tcaThen use dpkg -i to install. That makes you the admin, and should work18:51

Aquinahello charlie! :-)18:57

raevolhi all, upgraded to lucid and my desktop entries in /usr/loca/share/applications are not showing up in the menu, could anyone help?19:23
charlie-tcais there an .sh on the end of the file name?19:24
charlie-tcaraevol: none of the applications are in the menu?19:25
mikoyes there is.19:25
mikoshould I rename the file.19:26
raevolcharlie-tca: the ones in my /usr/local are not showing up19:26
raevol/usr/local/share/applications to be specific19:26
charlie-tcaraevol: Are those .desktop files? Did you upgrade from 9.10 or 8.04?19:27
dork-hey all19:27
raevolcharlie-tca: they are .desktop files and i upgraded from 9.1019:27
dork-anyone familiar with a problem with Thunar browsing files/dirs on a sshfs/fuse mount?19:27
charlie-tcamiko: did lexmark have any kind of directions on their website?19:27
charlie-tcaraevol: I don't honestly know then. I put mine in /home/USER/.local/share/applications19:28
charlie-tcadork-: what problem?19:28
charlie-tcaI use sshfs with no issues19:28
mikothey just said to click on the shell and it should start install...it would but it demands my password which I type into the field a zillion times and it tells me it's the wrong password...mind you this is the same PW that I use for SPM and installs done through terminal.19:29
raevolcharlie-tca: what could have gotten changed about the menu system that it now ignores that directory? i thought no development had been done on xfce19:29
charlie-tcaraevol: don't know. There is always work being done, though. It may have been a xubuntu change instead of xfce, too.19:30
raevolalso charlie-tca i don't see the cleaned up system/settings menu that were noted in the release notes, could this be a symptom? do i have some sort of user-land changes that i need to remove?19:30
charlie-tcaraevol: try right clicking on the Applications, left-click properties, make sure the mark in on 'Use default desktop menu file'19:31
dork-sotrud_nik: : i have a filserver (xubuntu karmic) that i mount to my laptop (xubuntu lucid) via sshfs (sshfs login@box:/dir /local/mount/dir) but when i navigate to it i can't click on any directories in the mount19:31
dork-charlie that was to you19:31
dork-errr19:31
raevolcharlie-tca: default is selected19:31
charlie-tcamiko: then you don't need to use dpkg, use 'sh  lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh' instead19:31
charlie-tcadork-: they do show up, though?19:32
dork-well the dir's and files in the root of the mount yah, but i can't get anywhere below that using thunar19:32
charlie-tcadork-: make sure you are using icon view or compact view in lucid19:32
dork-in ff/nautiluls/terminal browsing it's fine19:32
charlie-tcaIf you use detailed view, it will lock up19:33
dork-charlie-tca: ok i thought it might be related to that19:33
dork-i just saw the bug in the topic in #xfce19:33
charlie-tcathen you have to close the thunar window and open it again19:33
dork-yeah that works fine19:33
mikowilldo19:33
dork-guess i should have tried that the first time19:33
dork-thanks for the help :p19:33
charlie-tcaYou are welcome19:34
raevolcharlie-tca: in xfce-applications.menu i see a <DefaultAppDirs/> thing, if i somehow added my /usr/local to that would it show up19:35
=== TommyK_ is now known as TommyK
TommyKrunning xubuntu as a guest in virtualbox, anyone know why after mount the guest additions iso it doesn't show up in the file system anywhere for me to install it?19:37
mikocrap...tries to install...launches the insaller window again...which would be fine if the installer recognized my PW.19:38
charlie-tcaraevol: You could backup the file and try it.19:38
kentIs anyone else having an issue getting the xubuntu 10.04 installer to boot from the cd?  My computer attempts to boot from the cd and then skips right into the grub menu.19:39
charlie-tcaTommyK: using puel edition or ose?19:39
raevolcharlie-tca: i will thanks19:39
TommyKpuel19:39
charlie-tcausing 3.1 you no longer mount guest additions as an iso.19:40
charlie-tcaTommyK: instead of mounting it, click on cd menu, dismount all images19:40
charlie-tcaThen click it again, and guest-additions installer should be the last entry19:41
TommyKwhen i do that, it lets me select VBoxGuestAdditions.iso19:42
TommyKthen nothing happens in the guest os19:42
charlie-tcaOnce you mount the iso, open the cd in the guest, and double-click the file to be run?19:43
TommyKthe cd doesn't show up, i think that's my problem19:43
TommyKthere is nothing in /cdrom or /media/cdrom19:43

TommyKxubuntu 10.04 and virtualbox 3.1.619:47
TommyKhmm, just tried to mount a physical audio disc and it's not coming up either, maybe i had a problem during the install19:51
charlie-tcashould be able to click devices, switch it to host drive, then click 'devices' again, click on 'install guest additions'19:52
TommyKyeah, i've tried that a number of times, i think there is an issue19:53
TommyKi'll just install again for kicks19:53
charlie-tcaMine came right up with 'Auto-Run capability detected' and wants to install guest-additions19:53
TommyKyeah, something is wrong for me19:53
TommyKthanks for the help19:53
charlie-tcaIt also shows the VBox Guest Additions cd on the desktop at that point19:54
TommyKyeah, that's what i expected19:54

TheSheepthen you have something broken, because I just installed it from lucid's universe repository21:30
bcgrownthis a completely fresh install...  updating synaptic now then i'll check21:30
bcgrownthe only one there is gpointing-device-settings.  you sure you didn't install that instead?21:32
