scott_jbodom : where can i enable that ?00:03
bodomscott_j: right click on widget's background, then choose "settings" on the context menu00:03
scott_jbodom: I checked settings , but dont find which option to set00:05
scott_jthere are four categories, Location,Display,Filter,Keyboard Shortcut and Share00:06
scott_jIn Location, i have specied a folder, /home/scott_j/Documents00:06

scott_jbodom: had u enabled that setting urself somewhere ?00:10

bodomscott_j: then upgraded to 10.04 and is still there00:11
scott_jbodom: oh i see, i had done a fresh install of 10.0400:11
scott_jmaybe thats the reason then00:11
bodomscott_j: I'mnot 100% sure we'r talking about same thing, I mean this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Ep3VaiHZE00:12

scott_jbodom: oh thanks for showing that..we were not talking about the same thing :D00:14

roberto_hi - I started an install with "sudo apt-get intall ri" and said yes but then realized it was installing ruby1.8 and I want to stay a pure 1.9.1 install, so I killed that process -- it had just downloaded the packages and was unpacking the first when I did it16:10

StefanTroberto_: the "apt-get -f install" is to be sure that the packages are in a consitent state16:21
roberto_i did that .. and autoremove too16:21
StefanTroberto_: "sudo apt-get autoremove" removes packages that were installed by some dependencies but are not required anymore16:21
roberto_just incase the ri install managed to put some ruby1.8 deps on my system :) -- but it didnt16:22

tobagoStefanT, i want those links in a bar. i didn't mean quickstart. i mean a bar, where i can put the links to the tools i often use. (in gnome it was a top bar).16:40
StefanTtobago: you mean an extra toolbar with those icons?16:40
tobagoStefanT, yes16:41
StefanTtobago: then add a toolbar first, and then add the "quickstart" applet to this toolbar.16:41
tobagoadding a new "controlbar" doesn't add a bar (as i expected). it just adds a rounded corner in top right corner and another one in the top left corner, but not a bar.16:42
StefanTtobago: for me it adds a short bar in the top left corner16:43
StefanTclicking the button there allows to configure the bar16:43
tobagoStefanT, and adding new minitools, it puts them onto the desktop like screenlets/ widget applets.16:44

made_mani've uninstalled the nvidia drivers from my pc and the nouveau module replaced them after the reboot19:17
flavio_bentob0x: My current boot partition uses 33MB, 256MB should have plenty of room19:17
made_manhow can i reinstall nvidia drivers?19:17
Byronflavio_: Should that have been "sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24-pkg1.run"?19:17
flavio_Byron: Yes19:17
flavio_ghaleb: try running vmware config again19:18

flavio_made_man: No,19:20
made_manflavio_: no?19:20
flavio_ghaleb: Not using vmware anymore, should be vmware-conig-whatever, if I remember.19:20

flavio_made_man: No, he tried to use the upstrem nvidia, I am tring to uninstall it19:21
made_manoh, ok19:21
flavio_ghaleb: VirtualBox, but ver light usage19:21

ghalebflavio_: yes I used it, but it's not that powerful as vmwar19:22
ghalebI will try to use it if I couldn't solve the vmware problem19:22
flavio_ghaleb: But is apparently more light on resources, I hardly use it, so it's ok with me.19:23
flavio_Byron: Any luck?19:23
ghalebflavio_: yes yes absolutely,19:24
Byronflavio_: It only has -a (accept), --update (update the driver), -v (version), -h (help) and -A (Advanced options)19:24
flavio_Byron: Try the -h option, see if it lists a uninstall option19:25
Byronflavio_: Nope, to uninstall option19:25
Byronflavio_: found it19:26
flavio_Byron: Try it19:26
Byronflavio_: there is no NVIDIA driver currently installed19:27
flavio_Byron: too bad19:27
flavio_Byron: Try to reinstall the nvidia kubuntu packages19:28
Byronflavio_: I have; still no change19:28
BluesKajByron, one can always fall back on the venerable , lspci | grep VGA ,then do a search for the required driver19:28
ByronBluesKaj: I'm running on vesa right now. That's how I have a GUI on the desktop19:29
flavio_Byron: Have you installed other proprietary drivers also, let's say, ati or intel ones? I had a problem on a system with a intel card where i installed nvidia packages.19:30
Byronflavio_: Nope. No other drivers19:31
flavio_Byron:  Ok, when using the Nouveua driver your system crashed, right?19:31
Byronflavio_: yup19:32
flavio_Byron:  Unistall the nouveua drivers, install the nvidia driver (The free, bundled with the xorg), remove the custom xorg you probrabily used.19:33
Byronflavio_: My current xorg is only the "vesa" driver, nothing special19:33
flavio_Byron:  Then try to use the proprietary drivers again via the restricetd drivers.19:33
harjotanyone have hp laptop here?19:34
flavio_Byron:  Exactly, but, If i remenber, current X doesn't use a xorg file anymore, my guess this is the cause the proprietary ubuntu can't configure you X19:34
Byronflavio_: It's not currently installed.19:35
flavio_Byron, the nouveu drivers?19:35
Byronflavio_: Correct19:35
flavio_the nvidia-xorg package is installed?19:35
yofelthere is no such package, it's either nvidia-current/nvidia-173/nvidia-96 for lucid or nvidia-glx-185 etc. for karmic and before19:36
Byronflavio_: Nope19:37
flavio_Byron, unistall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, install xserver-xorg-video-nv, and restart the X server19:37
flavio_Byron, And don't use a custom xorg.conf19:37

bdizzle__and it shows both sda1,2, and 5, along with sdb1, sdb2, sdb3, sdb5, sdb6 and sdb7, claiming the partition table entries are not in disk order22:34
BluesKajbdizzle__, ok you have an unallocated partition which is probly the linux ext , use your laptop to download gparted live cd and burn it . the nuse the live cd to make the partition an ext if gparted doesn't label it.22:36
BluesKajext4, that is22:36
bdizzle__yeah, sdb4 is missing, looks like it would start around 13400 and end around 2666622:37
bawwwbdizzle__: what filesystem does your problematic disk use?22:38
bawwwNTFS, ext4?22:38
bdizzle__okay, the breakdown is as follows22:38
BluesKajntfs is windows , ext is linux22:38
bdizzle__sdb1 -> HPFS / NTFS,   /dev/sdb2 -> W95 Ext'd (LBA)     sdb3 -> Linux Swap    sdb5 -> HPFS / NTFS    sdb6 -> Linux (ext3)   and sdb7 -> Linux (ext3)22:39
bdizzle__okay, due to an extremely shitty internet connection (university seems to believe that a purely wireless system is best, thus there are no wired connections, and the wireless comes and goes on us, it will take about an hour for it to download22:41
bawwwbdizzle__: do this first, use the ddrescue method in the article to back up all the partitions into images22:43
bdizzle__okay...22:44
bawwwthen you have two options, is to extract the files from the image22:44
bdizzle__GNU ddrescue?22:44
bawwwor go ahead and try to repair your hard drive22:44
bdizzle__okay, how do I install that if I am booting off the liveCD?22:45
bawwwbdizzle__: try sudo aptitude install gddrescue22:47
bdizzle__tried22:47
bdizzle__couldn't find package22:47
BluesKajrescue what ?22:47
bdizzle__does it stand for god damn drive rescue or something?22:48
bawwwBluesKaj: GNUddrescue22:48
bawwwit's  maintained more than ddrescue, since ddrescue is out dated or something22:49
BluesKajbawww, he doesn't need to rescue just get X and his graphics to work22:49
bawwwbdizzle__: you're trying to rescue data, is that right?22:49
bdizzle__no22:49
bdizzle__trying to get my computer to boot22:49
bdizzle__it won't boot off the hard drives, kept giving me Error 15 / 17 / 25 combinations22:50
BluesKajbdizzle__, at the tty ,try sudo service kdm start22:50
bdizzle__I can get it to boot off the liveCD22:50
bdizzle__says kdm is already running22:50
BluesKajok, type startx22:51
bawwwbdizzle__: are you on the current system that's having the issue?22:51
bdizzle__I'm typing on my laptop22:51
bdizzle__but I'm sitting in front of my desktop, which is having the issues22:51
bdizzle__so I do have at least one working computer22:51
bawwwbdizzle__: did you try reinstalling grub?22:52
bdizzle__tried, yes, succeeded, no22:53
bdizzle__it kept claiming the partition table didn't exit22:53
bdizzle__*exist22:53
bdizzle__and I don't know how to read memory blocks to figure out where it might be, assuming it didn't get deleted somehow22:53
BluesKajbdizzle__, sudo update-grub22:54
bawwwbdizzle__: so you're getting a "Error 15: File not found" type of message?22:54
bdizzle__let me boot it normally without the disk and I can type what it shows22:54
BluesKajahhh... too many cooks ...bbl22:54
bdizzle__sorry..22:55
bdizzle__okay, rebooting normally22:55
bdizzle__it takes a while to recognize the slave drive, the master it picks up fine22:55
BluesKajbdizzle__, good luck22:55
bdizzle__okay, its hung on trying to detect the slave drive22:58
bdizzle__now physically unplugging the IDE cable to the slave drive22:58
bdizzle__it boots, get to loading grub, gives me error 2122:58
bawwwbdizzle__: did you make any changes in your bios prior to the problem?22:59
bdizzle__other than to switch the boot order so that I could get it to boot from USB, no22:59
bawwwbdizzle__: what version of kubuntu is this on?23:03
bawwwlucid?23:03
bdizzle__it was 9.0423:04
bawwwbdizzle__: it seems like your grub settings which is located in /boot/grub/menu.lst is pointing to a different hard drive or partition23:06
bdizzle__that is possible, I was doing it rather ad-hoc to get it to work23:06
bawwwbdizzle__: boot up on the desktop with a 9.04 liveCD23:07
bdizzle__okay23:08
bawwwmount the linux parition and check what the settings say in the /boot/grub/menu.lst23:08
bdizzle__hold on23:09
bawwwand match it with your current fdisk output23:10
bdizzle__yeah, not sure how to mount things outside of X23:10
=== Philip6 is now known as Philip5
bdizzle__still waiting for the LiveCD to load, hold on23:13
bdizzle__okay, LiveCD is up23:15
bdizzle__tried fdisk -l, claims its not seeing the linux drives right now23:15
bdizzle__says it doesn't contain a valid partition table23:16
bawwwbdizzle__:  try it with sudo23:16
bdizzle__yeah23:16
bdizzle__okay, the windows drive is still there23:16
bdizzle__and one of the backup drives is there23:16
bawwwsome are missing?23:16
bdizzle__yes, the entire 320 GB drive (slave drive, 3 partitions, split evenly) is missing23:17
bawwwdid you get any SMART errors before booting to linux?23:17
bdizzle__SMART errors?23:17
bdizzle__I got a bunch of grub errors23:17
bawwwwhat were you doing before you had the issue?23:17
bawwwwere partitioning the disk?23:18
bdizzle__don't remember, I've put this off for about eight or nine months now23:18
bdizzle__something about school and whatnot. This is the first time i've had a chance to work on it23:18
bawwwSMART checks the health of your hard drives23:18
bdizzle__um, it had problems loading the Slave drive in BIOS23:18
bawwwsometimes if the disk is messed up you can get all sort of disk errors23:18
bdizzle__where it read the master drive and gave its description23:19
bdizzle__then the slave drive was blank or so23:19
bawwwwere you going to install a newer version of kubuntu on it?23:19
bdizzle__yeah, I was trying to23:20
bawwwyou were going to upgrade to clean install?23:20
bdizzle__yes, but I need to figure out which of those partitions had the data on it, ie, which ones were the /home, which was just /23:20
bdizzle__I can easily enough23:20
bawwwyou want to backup the data is that it?23:20
bdizzle__yeah, but I need to figure out what drive works for me to back it up to23:21
bdizzle__if I have to, I can just leave the dead parts of the drive out23:21
bdizzle__but I need to know which partitions failed and where the data is23:21
bdizzle__mostly school documents, music and movies23:21
bawwwok, first thing run th SMART test in your bios make sure your disk is healthy and that's not an issue23:21
bdizzle__ok23:21
bdizzle__where is that hiding?23:21
bawwwshould be somewhere in BIOS23:22
bawwwcheck under diagnostic utilities23:22
bdizzle__ok, hold on23:22
bdizzle__PC health status?23:23
bawwwit could be there23:23
bawwwor under hard disk options23:23
bdizzle__ok23:23
bdizzle__HDD Smart capability - disabled for both23:24
bawwwenable it23:24
bdizzle__and I didn't see anything in bios to enable it23:24
bawwwso you have two disks right?23:25
bdizzle__yes23:25
bdizzle__windows on an 80 GB that is working, but I can't get into it because of grub23:25
bawwwwhy don't you partition the good disk, install kubuntu on it and then try to recover the bad disk23:25
bdizzle__and then linux on a 320 that isn't working23:25
bdizzle__.... because I wasn't thinking23:26
bawwwyou can restore your MBR to get into the Windows disk23:26
bawwwif that's where all your personal files are23:26
bdizzle__yeah, I've done that before, I am hoping someone knows of a less painful way than downloading freeDOS23:26
bawwwdo you have a Windows XP cd?23:27
peppe___join23:27
bdizzle__yes23:27
bawwwyou can use that23:27
bawwwis it a windows xp os though?23:27
bawwwor vista?23:27
bdizzle__xp23:28
bawwwok so just drop to the recovery console and type in "fixmbr"23:29
bdizzle__okay, give me a sec23:30
bdizzle__I usually get these things set up quickly and its not an issue23:30
bawwwbdizzle__: where are the personal files on the linux disk or windows disk?23:30
bdizzle__linux23:30
bdizzle__it had the bigger hard drive23:31
bawwwdid you keep the files in a different partition from / (root)?23:31
bdizzle__yes23:31
bawwwwas the /home on different partition?23:31
bdizzle__yes23:31
HOPPERhy to everyone23:31
peppe___ciao23:32
HOPPERciao23:32
bawwwbut those partitions aren't visible on fdisk?23:32
bdizzle__sometimes they were, sometimes they weren't23:32
bdizzle__and I can't get it to boot to the windows CD for some reason23:32
bawwwhm...23:33
bawwwmight because you changed the boot order to get the usb boot working?23:33
bdizzle__let me make sure I had the right one23:33
bdizzle__yeah23:33
bdizzle__sorry, brain is tired from this23:33
bdizzle__okay, booting from windows XP CD23:33
HOPPERhow to connect to internet via pcmci 3g modem by bash shell?23:34
HOPPERhow to connect to internet via pcmci 3g modem by bash shell?23:34
bdizzle__okay, you said drop to recovery console?23:35
bawwwyeah23:36
bdizzle__ok23:36
bawwwit should be R23:36
bdizzle__yup23:36
bdizzle__its going now23:36
pucko-HOPPER, shouldn't it register as an usb device?23:37
Guest12917any sane way of getting wifi tethering to work with ubuntu?23:39
shimmr7Did anyone else get mass-banned from #wordpress?23:40
=== Guest12917 is now known as robinr
bawwwbdizzle__: the priority is to check SMART, since your bios doesn't have the utility you can use Windows disk software to do it also. do it have you've restored the windows mbr23:42
bdizzle__yeah, I'm trying to watch the recovery to see where to enter in "fixmbr"23:43
bawwwbdizzle__: if the health of the disk checks out OK then you have an option to do a clean install and keep /home, but when you do a clean install choose a different user name from your 9.04 installation. that way you can install the new version of kubuntu without altering your old /home and recover your personal files from the old /home23:43
bawwwit should give you a command line23:43
bdizzle__that would be the hope23:43
bawwwto choose the windows installation23:43
bdizzle__oh, that is where we enter it23:43
bdizzle__okay23:43
bawwwit should be 1 by default23:43
OssidoHello. May I ask a couple of questions?23:44
bawwwthen lets you enter dos commands at C:\Windows23:44
bdizzle__yeah, it woudln't let me23:44
scott59off subject but just wanted to know if anyone has information about a company Netrome in Englewood, NJ 0763123:45
bdizzle__it just let me load the existing windows, which put me back at grub23:45
bawwwbdizzle__: make the windows hard drive the primary in bios boot23:45
bdizzle__hell, I just unplugged the slave drive with all the linux stuff on it23:46
scott59someone was using the campany for security and seems that they went out of business so told him I would check if a new company purchased them23:46
bawwwok23:46
scott59thought someone from the NJ area might be online tonight23:47
bdizzle__okay, re-entering the recovery setup23:47
bawwwlet me look up a tutorial for you23:48
bawwwbdizzle__: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/ you're going to follow the Windows XP one.23:48
bdizzle__it won't let me in, says I need the administrator password (wtf, its my system)23:48
bawwwuse blank23:49
bdizzle__oh...23:49
bawwwusually it's blank if you haven't entered anything23:49
bawwwpress enter23:49
bdizzle__alright, let's restart and do it again since I tried three different ones that I could have thought of23:49
bawwwbdizzle__: i'll pm you the steps so that way you can do it if i have to go anytime soon23:50
bdizzle__ok23:50
