kidtphey zachk_00:01
kidtpi was eating dinner00:01
ImpunityI freaking love IP tables00:03
ImpunityIt's how a firewall is supposed to be00:03
Impunity<open for debate>00:03
kidtpdoes linux need a firewall?00:04
Impunityneed...00:04
Impunitynobody needs a firewall00:04
ZachK_kidtp: no...ubuntu has no need of any virus software and or firewall00:05
phillwkidtp: ubuntu is fully firewalled by default00:05
ImpunityIf you know how to form null flag and craft packets at layer 3 you can do a lot of damage00:05
Impunityits fire wall is what UFW?00:05
kidtpbut who would be that bored and mean?00:06
Impunitywhich runs iptables under the hood :P00:06
ImpunityI do write packets, only to layer 3 though00:06
ImpunityI use Pascal and don't have a linker for making drivers00:06
Impunity:P00:06
Impunityneed C for that00:06
ImpunityPlus, you need an older system if you want to do it on Windows00:07
ImpunitySP2 drops malformed headers00:07
ImpunitySP1 is good for it00:07
ImpunityPlus, you need to put 2 months into learning winsock00:08
Impunityminimum00:08
phillwkidtp: head over to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812 to get a feel of how ubuntu & security work00:08
kidtpphillw: thanks ill check it out00:09
kidtpimpunity: do you know anything about microphones and skype?00:09
ImpunityNot for Ubuntu00:10
kidtpoh ok00:10
ImpunityI am a newbie with Linux00:10
ImpunityI just use Ubuntu server anyway00:10
Impunitygreatest thing since sliced bread00:11
phillwImpunity: With 10.04 there is a new manual out, head over to http://ubuntu-manual.org/ for more details. (Oh, it's good :-) )00:11
ImpunityThanks, Phill but I understand most of what I need, now.00:12
ImpunityI was here for Linux routing questions, but I already figured it out...00:12
ImpunityYou guys want an excellent tutorial on iptables?00:13
kidtpare there any commands i should put in right now that are important or nice to use for ubuntu? i already have the flash one00:13
ImpunityMakes it really easy to understand.00:13
Impunitylearn "find"00:13
Impunityand "grep"00:13
Impunity"ps"00:13
Impunityoh, and "sudo" lol00:14
phillwImpunity: that guide is there for you, then, if you want specifics of routing then you will need to narrow down on the things you need for your network00:14
kidtpfind obviously means find and grep i think means get? i used all but ps yesterday00:14
phillwwell, without wishing to put a dampner on thigs, could i also adise that you read http://ubuntuforums.org/announcement.php?f=33600:15
phillwSadly, it is something you should be aware of it.00:15
Impunitylol the old rm trick?00:17
phillwforum staff, and those with a few beans can be trusted, but do take note of it.00:17
ZachK_phillw: i always post the source of the code if i even put code for use on the forums00:17
ZachK_that way it's verifiable00:17
phillwand other hacks to put in a admin user into your system00:18
phillwZachK_: i use http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=57 on my baby forum00:18
ImpunityThe one snip with all the hex values is quite obvious00:18
ImpunityIf you go to milworm and metaspolit and spend some time, you can learn a lot00:18
phillwImpunity: for a n00b? - I beg to differ00:18
ImpunityI will give an e-cookie to the first person to find a good tutorial for setting up an ubuntu time server and how to connect clients to it.00:21
kidtpyou could probly type in on bing00:22
phillwidk what "time server" is.00:22
ImpunityIt's not like I didn't look for it00:22
ImpunityI used on on the Ubuntu forums, however, it was pretty short and not welll explained00:23
ImpunityI think the issue was the fact the server was only broadcasting00:23
ImpunityI was trying to link clients from another subnet....not sure why that would be an issue00:24
phillwImpunity: you ahve not been to http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=339 ??00:24
phillw/s/ahve/have00:24
ImpunityNope, Phill00:24
phillwImpunity: I can recommend it :-)00:24
ImpunityLooking at it now, pimp.00:25
ImpunityActually, this is where I got the NTP setup00:25
ImpunityIt was like 25 lines and not really clear00:26
phillwbodhi's thread may be a good one to follow, if you have questions, that is a good place to post questions00:26
Impunitycheckin it00:27
phillwImpunity: well I'm sure that 17,000+ people cannot be wrong ;-)00:29
Impunitygive me the link, I could not get the search to turn up his post00:29
ImpunityPlease, ;P00:29
Impunitywhat did you do for a search, I used NTP server and used poster bodhi00:30
ImpunityWhat! you mean humans don't have 3 ears?00:30
Appl6Impunity: This looks like it might be helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=86262000:31
ImpunityThat's an excellent one App00:32
Impunitythanks, chief00:32
Appl6Impunity: You're quite welcome.  If you were interested in improving your google-fu, I searched for "setup ubuntu ntp server", and it was the 3rd hit.00:33
Phreagood people of #ubuntu-beginners, a year ago I did my first serious Linux install and promised myself to stick with it, today,  I can announce that I migrated the last windows box I had to Linux, I am from now on 100% Windows free [no dualboot either ! :D ]00:43
Phreayou guys rock !00:43
nhandlerThat is great news Phrea00:44
Phreafor me it is indeed, I'm very very happy00:44
PhreaI don't use any native windows programs anymore, so I thought to myself: why the heck not?00:44
Appl6Phrea: Haha, congratulations.00:44
phillwPhrea: kewl, welome to the 100% club - just converted my Mum to lubuntu couple of days back. :-D00:45
Phreahaha, cool :D00:45
PhreaI wont convert anybody, certainly not my parents tho, no need00:45
Phreaphillw: Lubuntu, when will that officially come out?00:46
Phreawith Meerkat or so?00:46
phillwmy mum uses my old laptop, it was taking 2-3 minutes to boot with XP (anti virus stuff, etc), with lubuntu it is 20 seconds - my Mum is impressed ;-)00:46
Phreaor did you just do an alternate install and chose lxde?00:46
Phreaphillw: my pc does take quite a while to boot tho, going to look into that00:47
dragondongreetings all!00:47
PhreaI think around maybe 40 to 50 seconds, which is WAY too slow for a quad cpu/4gb machine00:48
phillwPhrea: it will be adopted when canonical and the lubuntu devs are quite happy. with the complete re-write of pcmanfm, there was not a snowball in a hot place chance it would meet the 10.0400:48
dragondonI am trying to figure out firewall stuff and my syslog showing a TON of dropped packets.  Any reason why it's seems to be dropping so many?00:48
Phreaphillw: haha00:48
phillwPhrea: do a check with ureadahead00:48
Phreaone can use the Alternate cd for such installs too, cant one?00:49
PhreaI'll go and read up again :D00:49
phillwPhrea: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1434502 cover ureadahead, yes you can use mini-iso if you have less than 160MB of RAM00:50
PhreaI'm looking into that for a server install [I need a gui, even on a server]00:51
phillwPhrea: join #lubuntu00:52
Phreamaybe when I'm ready, for now I'm very happy with the fact that all my boxes now are dedicated linux machines :D00:52
PhreaI do have a question tho...00:53
Phreathere's a big data disk in this machine, it's of course still NTFS and I want to switch to ext00:53
phillwone guy is already using it on a thin blade server, requires less than 50% of the RAM per user00:53
Phreaphillw: maybe at a later stage :)00:54
Phreais there a safe way to convert a FS live?00:54
Phreaor should I go and move stuff around to convert the partitions on that disk?00:54
phillwPhrea: there is no real need to change it, you may gain some speed advantage, but it should not really be your bottle neck on a system00:54
Phreaphillw: and it's equally stable and usable on a linux system?00:55
Phreaif there's no need, why take risks with data, right :)00:56
phillwyeah, ntfs is a fairly stable system, chkdsk can recover most errors just as fsck does for linux disk formats00:56
Phreatrue enough :)00:56
Phreathanks00:56
phillwPhrea: not unless you had backed it up, no. I would advise to stick00:56
PhreaI havent backed it all up no, it's too much00:57
Phreaonly backup truely important files, no audio/video etc00:57
PhreaI'll stick with it :)00:57
phillwthen, do not go for doing surgery on your hard drive(s)00:57
Phreahaha, ok :D00:57
Phreathanks !00:57
PhreaI'm going to have a celebratory beer :D00:58
* phillw going for a ciggie00:59
Phrealater :)01:00
* phillw on #lubuntu01:04

Chris____Hi, I am trying to install LUbuntu and it is asking for a username and password?04:05
Appl6Chris____: At what point is it asking for a username and password?04:08
Appl6Chris____: When you're trying to login to the liveCD, or during the install process?04:08
Chris____I am trying to install04:08
Chris____using the live CD but I have see no menus04:09
Appl6Chris____: I don't understand.  Have you booted into the liveCD successfully?  Can you open Firefox, open a terminal, do you see a desktop?04:10
Chris____No, I see no graphics environment04:12
Chris____I rebooted again - Now I see the ISOLINUX message04:14
That_Wiki_GuySup team04:14
Appl6Chris____: OK.  So you stay at a terminal and then at some point it asks you for a username?04:15
Chris____Correct04:15
Appl6Chris____: Well, sorry, I've never used lubuntu.  But I can give you some things to try.04:17

dragondonhey all, looking for some help in diagnosing all these 'dropped' messages in my logs.04:19
dragondonshould they be there at all?04:19
dragondoni.e " DROPPED IN= OUT=eth0 SRC=192.168.1.9 DST=192.168.1.255 LEN=209 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=631 DPT=631 LEN=189 "04:20
That_Wiki_Guy!pastebin | dragondon04:20
Votebotdragondon: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com04:20
Appl6It's one line of output, are you really asking for a pastebin for that?04:21
dragondon<shrug> don't use IRC much, good reminder though.04:22
dragondonhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/430872/  :)04:23
Appl6dragondon: Sorry, all I can tell you is that those are UDP packets, so it _may_ be a network issue.  Dropped packets are a fact of life, but I don't know if those showed up in the logs because they're important.  Or maybe you have too many dropped packets.04:23
dragondonthanks Apl6, but it happening every few seconds....anywhere from 1 to 20 seconds these message show up.04:24
dragondonDoh...Appl6 I meant obviously.04:25
Appl6dragondon: Haha it's fine.  Which logs were you looking in?04:26
dragondonApple6:  syslog/messages.  Being new to Linux, I am trying to understand logs and what should/shouldn't be in them, what is normal/should be concerned about.  Seems to be about 5-6 per minute at least.  If this is normal, then how to I tell the system to ignore it?04:27
Appl6dragondon: Do you mean /var/log/messages?04:28
dragondonsorry, I meant the syslog and messages.  Using the logviewer app.04:29
Appl6dragondon: Oh.04:29
dragondonobviously one is the echoof another04:29
Appl6dragondon: Sorry, Pidgin crashed =\.04:31
dragondonAppl6:  s'okay....you dropped more than a few pakcets :P04:31
Appl6dragondon: Hahaha.04:31
Appl6dragondon: Could you paste one line of the errors you were getting, please?04:32
Appl6dragondon: I lost it with the crash.04:32
dragondonhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/430875/  satisfying the paste-bot :P04:33
Appl6dragondon: Haha, yeah thanks.04:33
dragondonwaiting for paste-bot to burb now after being fed :P04:35
Appl6dragondon: Well, I don't have any DROPPED messages in my logs.04:35
Appl6dragondon: Which of course makes you feel better.04:35
* That_Wiki_Guy burps for pastebot04:36
dragondonAppl6:  heh.....my logs are getting kinda biggish with all that info, don't want to be packing 100MB blogs floating around.04:36
dragondonThat_Wiki_Guy LOL04:36
That_Wiki_Guydragondon: Lol04:38
Appl6dragondon: It looks like iptables is logging all of its junk in /var/log/messages.04:39
Appl6dragondon: I haven't been able to find a clean way to redirect iptables messages somewhere else.04:40
Chris____I had tried (Ubuntu, no password) and (root, no password) ("username", "password")  - Now I rebooted and after the ISOLINUX, it says loading...boot: and it freezes!04:40
dragondonAppl6: so, no way to smack it around and say 'listen up.....'?04:40
That_Wiki_GuyChris____: Erh...what are you trying to do exactly?04:41
dragondonAppl6: I suppose I could just filter them but that's only in logviewer...04:41
Appl6dragondon: Here is a webpage that addresses that problem: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/force-iptables-to-log-messages-to-a-different-log-file.html04:41
Chris____I was trying to install LUbuntu to an old Toshiba but I think the CD might have errors even though created with under 10X speed - Thanks anyway04:42
Appl6dragondon: The proposed solution seems pretty hackish though.  iptables messages are at a certain priority level, so he just redirects all messages of a certain priority level out of the main logs.  But things other than iptables post messages at low priority, so you'll be redirecting random other stuff.04:42
dragondonAppl6: oh, good think you mentioned that....I was just gonna try it but maybe not.....04:44
Appl6dragondon: Yeah, I think I'd just take the 100MB logs =P.04:44
dragondonAppl6: lots of space here......but thanks for the info, it'll at least give me some direction to look into.04:45
Appl6dragondon: You're welcome; good luck.04:46
dragondonAppl6: May the Google be with me :P04:47
dragondonAppl6: Well, I'm sure there is some way to revser the logging option  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo#Logging04:48
Appl6Appl6: Yeah that looks like a pretty good solution.  I wonder what was up with the other guy's idea.04:48
dragondonAppl6: found out that it's in my iptables rules to log such crap, now to figure out how to problerly tell it to not bother logging..04:54
dragondonAppl6: do you know how to properly delete stuff in iptables?  Don't want to break it so that I can't ask questions any more :P05:00
Appl6dragondon: Haha.  Sorry, I know almost nothing about iptables.  I configured one once a long time ago.05:01
dragondonAppl6: yeah, guess I need to find some sorty of #ubuntu-intermedia channel?  :)05:01
dragondonintermediate.....ugh...05:01
Appl6dragondon: Ha, I think there's an #ubuntu-server.05:03
dragondonAppl6: that's more like #ubuntu-advanced for me!05:03
Appl6dragondon: Yeah I know nothing about configuring servers and stuff; I'm just a code monkey.  But iptables is right down their alley, so I think you'd get better help there.05:04
dragondonAppl6: speaking of code monkey's......you any good with Wordpress PHP?05:05
Appl6Appl6: Ha, no.  I've never used wordpress or PHP.  If you have a bug in existing code I might be able to puzzle it out, but not writing new code.05:06
dragondonAppl6: (you always talk to yoursel? :P  )  actually, looking to modify some code to implement a plugin, or need some way to certain parts of a plugin only to show to registered users.05:09
Appl6dragondon: Hahaha, yes actually, far too often.  I feel like a dunce every time, too.05:09
dragondonanyone any idea why I'm getting 'permission denied' for this: sudo iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules05:09
dragondonAppl6: well, if you are female, you cna use the 'boobs with dunce cap' symple <3  :P05:10
dragondonsymbol.....05:10
Appl6dragondon: I think it's because bash is doing "sudo iptables-save" redirected to /etc/iptables.rules.05:10
Appl6dragondon: So I think you have to do "sudo 'iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules'", maybe.05:12
dragondonAppl6: ??  the command 'iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules' is supposed to all the iptables to be saved to a file for backup.....when I got denied, I tried sudo and still nothing.  checked, thefile isn't there just in case.05:12
Appl6dragondon: What I'm saying is that ">" never made it to sudo.05:13
dragondonAppl6: Oooohhh.....that would be odd wouldn't it?  that's just a pipe for the iptables-save output.05:14
Appl6dragondon: Your shell, bash, interprets the ">", so it said "Aha!  This guy wants me to run iptables-save as superuser, then I should fall back to regular user, and try to save that in /etc/iptables.rules".05:14
Appl6dragondon: But you need to be superuser to write to /etc like that.  You can use single quotes to prevent bash from "messing" with your command.05:15
dragondonAppl6: ok, where should I put the quotes.....if I do the whole thing, I get "bash: sudo iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules: No such file or directory05:17
dragondon", if I do everything but sudo, I get "sudo: iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules: command not found05:17
dragondon"05:17
dragondonooh, wow....sorry paste bot....will remembe next time.....05:17
dragondonhere's a nice pretty link for you  http://paste.ubuntu.com/430892/05:18
dragondon(whew....got that in before he noticed....)05:18
Appl6dragondon: It's fine.  If it's just like 2 or 3 lines there's no problem, especially given that no one else is talking.  It's a problem if it's a lot of lines, or if other people are trying to talk and you're breaking up their conversations.05:18
dragondonheh05:18
Appl6dragondon: One sec.05:20
dragondonAppl6: well, I'm just gonna give it a shot....if it break<shrug> I'll just have to fix it.....again....05:20
Appl6dragondon: Give what a shot?05:20
dragondonAppl6: running this command and hope that it works "iptables -D logdrop2 1"05:21
Appl6dragondon: The easy solution to this is:05:21
Appl6sudo su -05:21
Appl6iptables-save > /etc/iptables.save05:21
Appl6exit05:21
dragondonnothing went' boom.....so I'm good....05:21
dragondonAppl6: woo-hoo....nothing in the log since "May 10 00:07:33"05:23
Appl6dragondon: Nice.05:23
dragondonAppl6: now to learn how to clear logs......after I sleep :)  Thanks for yer help!05:23
Appl6dragondon: You're quite welcome.  Good luck with that.05:24

Appl6ibuclaw: Then I got kinda sick of the incessant breakage and reconfiguration required for the ever-changing software on Linux.11:20
Appl6ibuclaw: Which makes the Haiku approach sound pretty excellent, but once they get out of alphas I'll probably give it a shot.11:20
* ibuclaw is gonna have a look round for their gcc toolchain - got to see if gdc will build and compile in it.11:23

ZachK_itsa: you don't need to logout to use superuser23:14
ZachK_itsa: really you shouldn't do that to begin with23:14
itsahow?23:14
ZachK_when you type a command in the terminal say, "apt-get install mozilla-thunderbird" you would put "sudo" in front of the command. that gives temporary root access to the current user23:15
BurkyNot sure, I don't have anything to tell me if there are any.  I do belive both my neighbors have wireless networks, but can't find them23:15
