FlyingTortoiseI fount this: The eCryptfs layered file system approach also eliminates the need for a dedicated partition, sparse file, or preallocated disk space for the encrypted data. eCryptfs files are written to the administrator’s chosen underlying file system with the total disk capacity available. Since each encrypted file is written to disk as an atomic unit, users can perform per-file incremental encrypted backups to remote storage – somethin00:01
FlyingTortoiseg that is impractical and dangerous with block device encryption solutions.00:01
FlyingTortoiseIs LUKS a block device encryption?00:02
Lady_MadonnaSomeone else will have to continue itsa ,  i need to go.   I am sorry.00:09
itsaThats ok thanks btw00:09

bronsonoh, you're in #lxcontainers too...  moving there.01:08
bodhi_zazendid it work ?01:08
FlyingTortoiseLooks like LUKS is a block encryption, any ideas what's impractical or dangerous about performing per-file incremental encrypted backups to remote storage with LUKS?01:36
AnarcoholicoHello01:37

Anarcoholicoso i tried mkfs and it says its too large a filesystem01:40
Anarcoholicowhat else could I try?  perhaps I'm not going about it the right way?01:41
FlyingTortoiseDid you try the System->Administration->Disk Utility?01:41
Anarcoholico:( no, sorry hadn't seen it,01:44

Silver_Fox_ddecator,  Without voice you will not be able to interact with votebot in this channel.08:58
ddecatorwell that seems kind of odd08:59
Silver_Fox_The command was also incorrect. It should have been: !language | nickname09:00
ddecatorincluding the nick is a requirement for the command?09:02
Silver_Fox_Yes,  Votebot will direct itself at the given nickname09:03
Silver_Fox_For example...09:04
Silver_Fox_!language | Silver_Fox_09:04
VotebotSilver_Fox_: Please watch your language and topic to help keep this channel family friendly.09:04
Silver_Fox_Does that help ddecator  ?09:04
ddecatorSilver_Fox_: yah, just different than ubot in the -bugs channel09:05
Silver_Fox_Well,  some differences are to be expected.09:05
Silver_Fox_:)09:05
ddecatortrue =)09:05
Silver_Fox_ubot != Votebot .  LOL09:05
Silver_Fox_But yes,  I do agree the language was inappropriate for the channel.09:06
ddecatorwell now i know for when i get voice =)09:06
ZachK_ddecator: just something to look forward to09:07
ZachK_right foxy?09:07

Silver_Fox_I hope everything to be as close to normal as possible very soon.09:14
Silver_Fox_So yes,  things are alot better.09:14
swoody:)09:14
Silver_Fox_ZachK_,  I will help you in SOD.09:16
Silver_Fox_Of course ddecator ,  from my understanding Votebot may be replaced with ubottu tonight. This depends on the meeting later.09:18
ddecatorSilver_Fox_: interesting...well i plan to be at the meeting, so i guess i'll see you there =)09:19
Silver_Fox_No, you will not.  I am sorry.09:19
Silver_Fox_I am not attending09:19
ddecatoraw. oh well, i'll be seeing you around at least09:19
Silver_Fox_Yes09:19
Silver_Fox_I hope so also.09:20
Silver_Fox_It is good to see talkative "newcomers" in the support channel09:20
ddecatori hope to be on the team soon, and IRC is one of my favorite ways to provide support, so i plan to stick around =)09:21
Appl6Silver_Fox_: I'm not a member of the beginner's team.  I thought this was just for beginner's to learn Linux, Ubuntu, and programming in general, and I thought I could help.  Should I not hang around if I'm not a member of the team?09:43
Appl6Silver_Fox_: beginners*09:43
Silver_Fox_Appl6,  You are welcome to stay09:43
Silver_Fox_We are a friendly bunch ;)09:44
Silver_Fox_In terms of learning... well #ubuntu-classroom would be a good place to start09:44
Silver_Fox_This channel exists with the view to proving support to thise who need help09:44
Silver_Fox_If you would like to help others then nobody here would have issue with you remaining in this channel09:45
Appl6Silver_Fox_: OK.  I didn't understand the #ubuntu-classroom part, though.  Should I help there, too?09:46
Silver_Fox_Appl6,  The classroom is where people gives talks on how to do stuff.  If you wanted to LEARN then it would be a good place to visit.09:46

javatexanis there a "safe" way to have both gnome and kde on ubuntu, I noticed on the startup screen there was a place for KDE too, but it would not fully login, I guess I am missing some packages......but it got me thinking....13:47
leoquantjavatexan, you did a apt-get kubuntu desktop on your ubuntu gnome?13:54
leoquantwhat do you mean by "not fully logging"?13:56
phillwjavatexan: is this what you want? http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde14:03
javatexanphillw: prolly, I noticed at the startup screen that there was a KDE option, but of course it didn't quite make it all the way.....14:05
phillwjavatexan: possibly because the kde desktop had not been installed :-)14:07
javatexanphillw: prolly ;)14:08
phillwyou can do it with USC, or as leoquant states, you an do it via the command line - which ever you're more comfortable with - They will both work :-)14:09

ircuserCan I use GParted to image/clone (used size, not the entire partition size) my Ubuntu and/or Windows installation and save them to a directory on an external hard disk?16:30
Flare183ircuser: no16:31
ircuserFlare183: Any other application I can use for this, preferably GUI? ( free ones)16:32
Flare183ircuser: Not GUI no16:32
ircuserFlare183: Oh, I have seen some Partimage tutorials. Though it has ncurses , I am not sure I can do it without any mess.16:33
Flare183ircuser: ncurses is still CLI based though16:34
Flare183tho*16:34
ircuserFlare183: Can you suggest please, which app is best for my need (even without GUI) ? I16:34
Flare183hmmm Gimme a sec16:34
Flare183ircuser: And what version of Ubuntu are you using?16:34
ircuserFlare183: 10.0416:35
Flare183Alright, Lucid. Give me a minute16:35
Flare183ircuser: Parted16:37
Flare183lol16:37
Flare183PartImage yes would be your best option16:37
ChesamoWhat about CloneZilla?16:37
* Flare183 googles16:37
ChesamoIt's essentially OSS Norton Ghost16:37
Flare183Now that is awesome16:38
Chesamoircuser: Check out CloneZilla16:38
Flare183Chesamo: I've never heard of that one :D16:38
ChesamoWe use it at work16:38
Flare183ircuser: yeah what he said :P16:38
Chesamo(I work for a DoD research lab)16:38
Flare183NICE16:38
Flare183XD16:38
ChesamoSo yeah, market adoption ahoy16:38
Akosi almost read DDoS16:38
ChesamoHah16:39
Flare183Akos: XD16:39
Flare183lmao16:39
ChesamoGovernment-sanctioned DDoS?16:39
Akos((:16:39
Flare183hehe that would fail of course16:39
ChesamoIt's been known to happen before ;-)16:39
AkosChesamo: well ya, something like that, I bet china has one of those institutes :P16:39
Flare183Chesamo: oh wow16:39
Flare183lol16:39
ircuserChesamo: CloneZilla makes the image of entire partition size or the size that is used. My Windows partition is 30GB (using only 18GB) and Ubuntu is 40GB (using only 20GB). So, I need to get used space images only and save them to a directory on an external HD (not a partition)16:39
ChesamoI'm sure it does.16:39
stevelshello,16:40
ChesamoYou want to copy the files in the directory?16:40
Chesamoircuser: Why don't you just copy and paste? That's kinda what you're asking16:40
Akoshi stevels16:41
stevelsi have ubuntu 9.10 and windows xp in dual boot since past few months , very happy wid the setup, but few days ago after a power failure everything change16:41
Chesamounless I'm reading something wrong16:41
Flare183stevels: What's problem16:41
Flare183the problem*16:41
stevelsgrub works but wen i get into ubuntu , it crashes and automatically reboots16:41
* Flare183 smells fsck problem16:42
Flare183stevels: try booting into recovery mode16:42
stevelsyeah reovery mode works but wen i do startx from there , it again crashes16:42
ircuserChesamo: no.. I want an image ( which can be restored in case of an OS failure and recreating the exact OS as it was at the time of backup). But I want that image to be backed up/saved in a directory on an external hard disk. (because I've read some apps allow only partition-to-partition backup)16:42
Flare183don't do that16:42
stevelsmy live cds also started behaving similarly16:43
stevelsubuntu 8.04,lubuntu 10.04, arch , etc all of them crash after the gui coomes up and restart16:43
Chesamoircuser: Clonezilla can save disk images...16:43
stevelsis it sum hardware level problem?16:43
Akosircuser: you should use a backup utility, that saves your files and it can restore them, like the one in Ubuntu Software Center Featured Software, dunno it's name, darn16:43
Flare183stevels: type in dmesg16:44
ircuserAkos: you mean sth like flyback, sbackup or backi  in time ? but that doesn't have my solution16:44
Flare183that should tell you :P16:44
stevelsdmesg??16:44
stevelswhere in recovery mode16:44
Flare183stevels: on the console/cli16:45
Chesamoircuser: From Wikipedia: "The cloned data can be saved as an image-file or as a duplicated copy of the data."16:45
Flare183its a command16:45
stevelswut shuld i looke for in it?16:46
Flare183stevels: errors lol16:46
stevels:)16:46
ircuserChesamo: Thanks, so it can be saved in a directory. And I need a CloneZilla Live CD or it can run from within Ubuntu? And what do I do when I have to restore? I can't use a 18 GB DVD (at loss here:( )16:47
Chesamoircuser: You should use the CloneZilla LiveCD, and you can just restore the image from wherever it is.....16:47
Chesamoircuser: Just don't store the images on the partition you're imaging16:48
Chesamoircuser: This is when an external hard drive comes in a lot of handy16:48
ircuserChesamo: Ok ok .. get it. Yes not on that. It will be another hard disk.16:48
Chesamoircuser: Then you should be all set.16:48
ircuserChesamo: Yes, seems so. I will just check for some tuts or walk through, in case I may forget something in the process. Actually I have to replace Fedora with Arch and I don't want to risk any partition. Thanks16:49
Chesamoircuser: No problem16:49
Chesamoircuser: Good luck!16:50
bootstrapI need some help with virtualbox, #vbox was no help.17:01
ChesamoI'm good with vbox, what's up?17:01
bootstrapChesamo: I am unable to install guest additions on xp.17:02
Chesamobootstrap: What error do you get, if any?17:02
bootstrapChesamo: unalbe to mount the cd/dvd image17:02
Chesamobootstrap: Did you verify that the image is in the proper location, and/or exists?17:03
bootstrapChesamo: Yes, and further I installed the additions perfectly fine on vista yesterday.17:03
ChesamoHuh.17:03
Chesamobootstrap: So it's just the XP guest?17:04
bootstrapChesamo: It seems so.17:04
Chesamobootstrap: Have you tried deleting the guest OS (not the hard drive) and recreating it using the same hard drive image?17:04
bootstrapChesamo: No. I am very new to virtualbox.17:05
Chesamobootstrap: Try that. Unmount the hard drive image using the Storage Manager and delete the XP guest, then recreate the guest machine using the pre-exsting disk17:05
bootstrapChesamo: Alright, I'll do that. Thanks.17:06
Chesamobootstrap: good luck17:06
bootstrapChesamo: That worked. I don't exactly understand why. But, thank you.17:15
Chesamobootstrap: You're welcome. You probably flipped a setting without realizing it.17:15
stevelsi have probably got some issues wid my video (xorg) , can anyone plz debug the problem from my dmesg log17:18
stevelsi am unable to start gui17:18
stevelsit crashes and automatically reboots17:19
stevelsits definitely not a driver problem since i have try numerous other live cds wid the same resutl17:19
stevelsseems to be a hardware fault17:19
stevelscan anyone help me figuring out wut exactly is not working ??17:20
Chesamostevels: what video card do you have, and what kind of computer is it (desktop/laptop)?17:20

Chesamointo the Administrators group, yeah17:56
Phreahow can I see what processes are actively using/needing memory? Processes under System Monitor seems to show all swap/preloaded/whatever stuff too19:30
Phrea[Up to date Lucid install]19:31
Phrea[2.6.32-22-generic kernel]19:32
ChesamoType "top" in the Terminal19:33
Chesamoit'll show you the most resource-hungry applications19:34
PhreaI'm not really sure what I'm looking at19:36
PhreaVIRT is stuff that is not actively used I gather, and RES shows what is actively used?19:36
Phreawould a screenshot help?19:39
ChesamoYou want to look at MEM19:39
ChesamoCPU helps too.19:40
Phreanothing out of the ordinary really, cept that Xorg is on top at both cpu and mem19:40
ChesamoNot surprising19:40
PhreaI'm coming up to 1GB of ram used now...19:41
ChesamoWhat's your total?19:41
Phreastarted out with 800MB once everything was open19:41
Phreatotal is 4GB19:41
Phreabut, before you say that it's enough, I rebooted earlier, because memory usage was up  to 3.xGB19:41
ChesamoWhat were you doing?19:42
Phreanothing, the pc was idle, I just sat down behind it after 30 hours or so19:42
Phreahad nothing open, cept for Xchat19:42
ChesamoOh, there's a bug in TTY...19:43
ChesamoCould be related...19:43
Phrearemember, I'm a beginner :D19:43
Phreawhat's TTY?19:43
Phreasomething on launchpad or so?19:43
ChesamoIt's the terminal19:44
ChesamoX is usually on tty819:44
Chesamo...if I recall correctly.19:44
PhreaI still dont know what TTY is :)19:44
ChesamoIt's just the shell.19:44
ChesamoX is a shell interface.19:44
Phreaoh ah19:45
Phreaok19:45
Phreaso it's TTY then Xorg then Gnome?19:45
ChesamoLike... if you remember back in the old days of Windows 3.x and Windows 95... they sat on top of DOS19:45
Phrea[for me to understand it more clearly]19:45
Phreayes19:45
Phrea:)19:45
ChesamoIt's a little more complicated than that, but yes, that's basically it. tty then xorg then gdm then gnome19:46
Phreak :)19:46
PhreaI know it's simplitically represented, I just wanted it to be clear19:46
Phreaso it's a bug in tty somewhere19:46
ChesamoThere's a bug that makes more tty sessions (in the background) than you need... not sure if it's fixed yet19:46
Phreaah ok19:46
Phreaso until then I've got to reboot every other day or so?19:47
ChesamoYou shouldn't... I mean my server's been up since 10.04 came out19:47
ChesamoSo I don't think that's entirely to blame19:47
Phreawell, 3+GB usage is an extreme amount for an idle system tho19:48
Phrea:o19:48
ChesamoYeah.19:48
ChesamoWell,19:48
ChesamoAfter letting that happen, see what's at the top.19:48
ChesamoThen we'll know more about the problem.19:48
Phreaok, I'll let it then :D19:48
Phreasee you in a couple of days :D19:48
Chesamoheh19:48
ChesamoGood luck19:48
PhreaI'll need it, just letting the system running is hard work ;)19:49
Chesamo"Can't.... not.... touch.... computer....."19:49
PhreaI'll use it, but it'll get some good idle time too :)19:50
PhreaI'll just go about my business like usual, tnen check that top command again19:50
Phreathanks for now, I'll check back in in a day or two19:51
ChesamoYou're welcome19:51
Phreais there some webcam software that will work with a Logitech cam? I don't need it to work with IM, just a working cam itself will be fine for now21:11
ZachK_Phrea: ah there is one but I can remember the name...21:15
ZachK_Phrea: sorry for a non definite answer but I just wanted to let you know that one is there....21:16
Phreahaha, it's ok :D21:16
compiledkernelgspca or whatever21:16
compiledkernelis what its called phrea21:16
compiledkernelI had a guide for it21:16
PhreaI've got a Pro 9000 I believe21:16
compiledkernelat one point21:16
Phreaoh no, I gots me not that expensive thingy, I'll look it up21:19
Phreait's a Logitech QuickCam Pro 500021:19
Phreaif that helps :D21:19
PhreaI havent looked around myself, so I'm being kind of lazy here21:20
PhreaI still dont know all the 'default' programmes for stuff like this21:23
=== running_rabbit07 is now known as uRock
Dillhey guys, I'm having a problem keeping Ubuntu on my Asus X83V laptop. can anyone help me?23:56
ddecatorwhat kind of trouble?23:58
Dillwell, at first I tried dual-booting the system.  This works perfectly on my netbook (32-bit) but when I do it on my 64-bit laptop it stops working after a week or two.  When I go to boot it up it says that there was some sort of problem finding the grub manager or something.23:59
Dillit's been a while since i got the message23:59
ddecatorso everything is working right now?23:59
Dilli then tried just using ubuntu instead of a dual-boot, but i would still get the message23:59
