malevhey, now is the meeting?00:00
Dillso, instead of single-booting ubuntu i single-booted win-7 and i haven't gotten the message in over a month00:00
ddecatormalev: in #ubuntu-meeting, just a few more minutes00:00
Dillbut every time i try to load ubuntu on my system it crashes everything00:00
Dilli can't get anything to work.  i won't boot into any os00:00
ddecatorDill: yes, ubuntu uses GRUB in order to allow you to select what OS to boot into00:01
Dillddecator, i know that, but grub always stops working on my laptop for some reason00:01
Dillddecator, it's the only computer that ive seen do this.00:01
ddecatorif you have a live CD, you can reinstall grub onto your harddrive, which may fix the issue, but i don't know if it will just be temporary or not00:01
Dilli made a live usb and tried that, but it just wiped both partitions (i'm not sure if i did it right though)00:02
Dillthe big problem is, now with LL out, i want to try it, but i'm afraid of messing things up again00:02
Dilli'm just tired of starting over00:02
ddecatorwhat version were you using before?00:03
Dillfor a few months there i was installing either OS (or both at the same time) a couple times a month trying to recover my data.  thank god I had everything important saved on an external00:03
DillKK00:03
DillI did a search and didn't find anyone that was experiencing the same thing i was.  i narrowed it down to ubuntu because it never happened when windows (regardless of version) was installed alone.  ubuntu (alone and side by side with windows) always became corrupted and stopped working.  i first thought it was a 32-bit/64-bit issue since it works great on my netbook, but the site says that the version works on both64 and 32 bit00:07
Dill systems00:07
ddecatoryes, i dual boot with 64-bit ubuntu just fine, and the reason you don't see it with windows alone is because windows doesn't use grub. what version of ubuntu were you trying to install?00:08
Dill9.10 Karmic Koala (or whatever the name was)00:09
Dillsorry, i just thought kk was acceptable00:09
ddecatoroh, sorry, didn't now that's what you were referring to, haha00:09
Dilllol00:10
Dillyeah00:10
Dill9.1000:10
Dillon both systems.  i used the same usb and all00:10
ddecatorwell lucid and karmic but use grub2, but lucid might have a more recent version. if you want to try lucid, i encourage you to try it and if the grub issue comes back, then we can help you use a live CD to reinstall it and possibly figure out what the cause is00:10
Dillyeah00:11
ddecators/but/both00:11
Dillbut the thing that annoys me is, if it fails, i have to start all over again for the n-teenth time in a couple of months00:11
ddecatornot necessarily. if grub is the only issue, then you can use the live CD to reinstall it on your harddrive so you can get access back to everything00:12
ddecatorthe main problem is what is causing the issue in the first place...00:12
Dillyeah00:12
Dilli guess00:12
Dilli wish i knew what that was to begin with so i wouldn't have to worry about if my system is going to crash every time i shut it down00:13
ddecatorafter you installed 9.10, did you run updates to make sure everything was up-to-date?00:13
Dillyeah00:14
Dillthat was something else i thought was the problem00:14
Dillmaybe the nvidia card or the centrino processor?00:14
ddecatori have nvidia, so that shouldn't be an issue. i just checked and lucid does have a newer version of grub2 than karmic, so it may not have this issue any more (hard to say unless you try unfortunately)00:15
Dillyeah, i hear you00:15
Dilli guess i'll have to just take the leap00:15
Dillbut it's getting a little depressing00:16
Dilli run ubuntu on my netbook all the time and i love it00:16
Dilli just hate putting my laptop through all the paces like that00:16
ddecatorif i doesn't work, then we'll do our best to help you figure out what is causing the issue =)00:16
ddecators/i/it00:16
ddecatorif grub is the only issue, then it shouldn't require a reinstall, just the use of a live CD00:17
Dillyeah00:17
Dilli hope so00:17
Dilli'm saving all my windows file on my external now and i've already made the usb00:17
Dillnow, once the transfer is done i just have to load the os00:17
Dillhopefully it doesn't crash in the next two weeks00:18
ddecatori hope so too =)00:18
ddecatorif not, we can try to fix it and at the very least make sure there is a bug report for it00:18
Dillthanks.  I have about 15 mins and the transfer is done00:19
Dillstupid usb200:20
ddecatorheh00:20
Phrea15mins for what amount of data?00:21
DillI'm seeing on the site that the 32-bit is the only downloadable version00:21
Dillis there a 64-bit lts?00:22
Dill30 gb00:22
Phrea..and you are complaining?00:22
ddecatoryes, you have to select other options00:22
ddecator32-bit is just the default download00:22
PhreaI havent read up tho00:22
Dillddecator, how do i do that?00:23
Dillddecator, nm i found it00:23
ddecator=)00:23
Dillmaybe that's what i did with kk00:24
Dilli have never seen that option before00:24
Dill17 mins before i have the 64-bit version downloaded00:29
phillwDill: it's about that before i remove 5 installations of *buntu from my computer. just doing some final backups :-)00:38
Dillphillw, say what?00:41
phillwi have had various test versions of 10.04 on my system, i need to clean them all down to two ('main' and lubuntu) to make room for 10.10 ones, oh and get rid of 9.10 :-) It's great fun, just nervous of nuking so much stuff ;-)00:43
Phreahere I am again...02:11
PhreaI've been playing with remastersys, like it a lot, but what does this exactly mean:02:11
PhreaPlease note that you must close all windows and >>>>unmount network shares<<<< while running the utility.02:12
Phreasimply disconnecting while remastersys is doing it's job?02:12
Phrearightclick on the network icon, deselect 'enable networking' ?02:14
kermiacPhrea: it means that if you have connected to any network shares (i.e. a disk shared from another computer) you need to unmount it. You do this the same way as you unmount usb drives02:28
Phreaok, I only need to do this if other computers are connected to the network :)02:28
starcraftmanPhrea: hmmm, nobody replied to ya. I'm not expert on remastersys but that is a viable solution. The problem from my quick looking is that remastersys is going to backup I take it data. I gather it just backs everything currently mounted, that would unecessarily include network shares. As kermiac said unmount them.02:29
starcraftmandarn my late night slow typing skillz!!!02:29
PhreaI disconnected the whole computer while using remastersys02:29
Phreastarcraftman: it's ok02:29
kermiacPhrea: yes, I use remastersys at work to make SOE images. It's a great program :)02:30
PhreaI disconnected [unmounted] the connection just to be sure02:30
Phreaok :)02:30
Phreakermiac: I LOVE it02:30
Phreaamazing, but I do need to learn to work with it02:30
danHello. does anyone know a good repository for openssh-server?02:30
Phreayou can make complete new distro's if one wanted...02:31
Phrea:o02:31
Phreabrilliant02:31
kermiacPhrea: you can keep the network connected, if you have connected to network shares they will show up on your desktop (unless you've changed the gconf key to hide volumes on the desktop)02:31
Phreaoh ok :D02:31
Phreathanks for the tip02:31
starcraftmanPhrea: checking /media and /mnt is foolproof regardless of what's on desktop.02:32
starcraftmanunless ya custom mounted somewhere special ><02:32
Phreastarcraftman: haha ok :D02:32
PhreaI'm still a beginner :D02:32
kermiacgood idea starcraftman :)02:32
Phreaso I disconnected my network connection and closed all windowed apps02:32
starcraftmanPhrea: roger, then /media and /mnt would be only destinations by most programs. /mnt mostly older ones.02:32
Phrea:D02:32
kermiacdan: what exactly do you mean? openssh-server is in the default ubuntu repositories02:33
pedro3005just run 'mount' to see everything that is mounted02:33
Phreastarcraftman: dude, thanks, but I need to read up again then :D02:33
Phreait'll be ok I think, bought some rw's to test it out02:33
Phrea:)02:33
Phreapedro3005: simple and effective, thanks02:34
Phrea:)02:34
danumm, but security.ubuntu.com karmic-security/multiverse seems to be dead for c 18 hours now...02:34
pedro3005Phrea, :D02:34
starcraftmanpedro3005: that works too, too many options. You win again Linux!02:34
Phreait's a brilliant piece of software02:34
* starcraftman shakes fist at tux for giving choices.02:34
PhreaI decided to offer him some help02:34
Phreahe doesnt seem to need some, but I still did offer :)02:35
starcraftmandan: tried swapping a different mirror?02:36
dancould you suggest a different mirror? I googled it got me nowhere...02:38
kermiacdan: in your System --> Administration --> Software Sources02:38
kermiacdan: just select "Main Server"02:39
PhreaChanServ: it's now up to 1.4GB, just to let you know02:41
dansorry kermiac, I'm on a server, so no System/Administation  etc02:41
kermiacdan: you said karmic, right?02:42
Phreasorry, I meant Chesamo and NOT ChanServ 'course02:43
danyes karmic02:44
starcraftmandan: Just manually edit your sources.list file then. I use http://gpl.savoirfairelinux.net/pub/mirrors/ubuntu/02:44
starcraftmangood canadian mirror dan, decent speed.02:45
Phreaone can edit that from synaptic too, cant one?02:45
kermiacthanks starcraftman, you were faster than me :)02:45
Phreawhich is the preferred way to do it02:45
starcraftmankermiac: hurray, I'm not slowing down!02:45
starcraftmanPhrea: he's on server though, no synaptic either I imagine.02:46
Phreaok, true02:46
kermiacstarcraftman: I'm trying to do too many things at once hehe02:46
PhreaI'll go be silent again ;)02:46
PhreaI still have a LONG way to go, don't I :)02:47
Phreawhich is ok02:47
starcraftmanPhrea: we all start somewhere.02:48
starcraftman:)02:48
Phreastarcraftman: true02:48
Phreabut I started over a decade ago02:48
Phrea....but then I got scared and got away !! :D02:48
Phreagheh02:48
starcraftmandan: mirror working?02:49
Phreafor me, I started Linux with Jaunty02:49
Phrea...and look at me now, I'm Windows free02:49
Phrealitterally02:49
Phreaamazing how far it has become02:49
starcraftmanPhrea: I started round dapper, but wasn't on team.02:50
starcraftmanwell at that time.02:50
PhreaI had a router running Slackware back in the day, but I did not install it02:50
starcraftmanhmmm, think we lost dan.02:51
Phreatried a few other distro's etc, it was all ok02:51
Phreabut I still needed windows02:51
Phreait took 12 years for me to convert completely02:52
starcraftmanPhrea: admirable, I still use windows. Don't really feel a need to expunge it from my life, though it does feel awfully primitive working on it.02:53
Phreabut, I did it ! :D02:53
Phreaand here I am now02:53
Phreastarcraftman: I have no need for it anymore02:53
PhreaI've got several computers, and none of them run windows, OR dualboot OR windows in a VM02:54
PhreaI got rid of it completely :D02:54
starcraftmanPhrea: atm its primary use is C# learning and a hand ful of primitive websites that only work in ie from my uni.02:55
Phreaah :)02:55
PhreaI wish I could program02:55
Phreasadly, I can't02:55
PhreaI dont mind, other than that I cant hack the programs I use to my own liking02:56
Phreabut that's about it02:56
PhreaI can't even 'hello world' in C/C++/C# :D02:57
PhreaI am THAT stupid :D02:57
swoodyPhrea: that's awesome to hear about your converting :)03:06
Phreathanks03:07
Phreait's still a bit scary tho :D03:07
swoodyI had to have XP installed so I could do work for a computer course at home, but the day I took my final exam I purged the last of MS from my HDD >:)03:07
Phrea..but it works03:07
swoodyheck, my phone even runs a Debian-based distro ;)03:07
Phreaand they are real computers too, not old ones03:07
Phreathis is now all I have03:08
starcraftmanPhrea: no time like the present to learn programming. Dev channel is good for that, plenty of free books on python, I can recommend others to take out of library if ya like.03:08
Phreastarcraftman: true, but I cant :)03:08
starcraftmanIt's a good skill, I wish I'd started sooner.03:08
PhreaI know03:08
Phreabut I cant03:08
swoodyPhrea: yep :) Once you figure out how to do everything you want to in Linux it becomes an "Ah ha!" moment :)03:08
Phreaswoody: the thing is that I already ran mostly free software on windows03:09
starcraftmanPhrea: never say can't, it ain't so bad. It is up to you though. Drop by dev channel or ask me if ya get interested :)03:09
PhreaI was just scared a bit03:09
swoodyPhrea: very cool :) That really does help the transition become much easier03:09
Phreastarcraftman: I can't.03:09
Phreaswoody: indeed :)03:09
Phreaplus I've played with it for over a decade03:10
Phreaand my secnodary default box already runs linux for a couple of years03:10
Phreastill, it was kinda scary03:10
Phreabut I did it :D03:11
Phreaand it works03:11
swoody:)03:11
PhreaI was mostly scared about my eyesight [kinda poor]03:11
swoodyfor me the process was pretty gradual. I dual-booted Vista and Ubuntu for some time, then I realized one day that I hadn't touched Windows in some months, so I just purged it :)03:11
Phreaah :)03:12
PhreaI never dualbooted03:12
Phreanot even back in the day03:12
PhreaI never understuud the principle of dualbooting03:12
Phreaone either uses one OS or the other03:12
swoodyvery true. That's what I learned out of that process too, haha03:13
Phreaso I never dualbooted, cept to try it out and see what people are talking about03:13
swoodyjust used the one I enjoyed the most, felt most secure on, and did what I needed it to... happened to be Linux :)03:13
Phreathat's also the reason why I tried out the Wubi install. :)03:13
PhreaJust to see what it's like03:14
swoodyoh, I've never touched Wubi :/03:14
Phreait's boring :D03:14
swoodyI never understood the appeal of that one bit03:14
Phreayou havent missed a thing03:14
swoodylol, that's good to hear :)03:14
Phreait's very dumb if one would ask me03:14
Phreait's somewhere between a dualboot [real install] and a VM install [totally not real install]03:15
swoodyyeah, that's the gist I got from it03:16
swoodynot really practical in application either way :/03:16
swoodyat least not for what I'm looking for03:16
Phreaoh well, I'm 100% clean of windows :D03:18
Phreagrrr, I still have some kind of leak to mem !03:20
PhreaI'm on 1.5GB mem atm03:38
Phreait's getting out of hand again03:38
Phreahttp://i.imgur.com/Y7qQh.png03:42
Phreathe steady network history is the webradio played via rythmbox you can see on the right03:45
Phreathere's something really wrong with Lucid03:47
PhreaI forget, where can I determine what deamons etc are to booted during a [re]boot and which not?03:50
nishanthdoes any one know how to make online videos that use microsoft media server plugin work on karmic?03:54
nishanthsomeone in here who can help with microsoft media server plugin04:05

scourisWhere can I find the panel-indicator icon for Banshee that appears when it has been minimised to the panel?  I need to fix it from doing this: http://yfrog.com/0ubansheequestionp09:18
leoquantscouris, you have the notification area active on your panel?09:25
scourisI do09:26
leoquantscouris,  I dont use banshee but is there an option in pref. to enable the panel-indicator?09:26
scourisOh, I have the indicator showing up, that's not my problem. In the picture that I linked, it shows the banshee icon overhanging the panel by as little as 1 pixel - not alot, but it's _very_ noticable09:27
leoquantand thats your problem?09:29
scourisyes - I want to locate the icon file and remove the background - if possible09:29
leoquantyou could increase/decrease the general panelseize?09:29
scourisI have tried that, and the icon still overhangs by the same amount09:30
leoquanthmm sounds like a bug to me scouris09:30
scourisI'll go to the banshee site and submit a bug report. Thanks anyway09:31

ChesamoWell, a minimal version. But yes.16:38
Chesamowhte: I don't think so16:38
whitelol16:38
SpistersI think they stripped a lot from the last netbook edition16:38
ChesamoSpisters: It looks like the UNR pakage disables it....16:39
ChesamoThe only solution I found was "Open Synaptic, remove the UNR metapackage and install the ubuntu-desktop16:39
Chesamo"16:39
ChesamoI don't like that solution16:40
SpistersI shouldn't be very surprised, a lot of that stuff was fairly buggy. The new Vs. Sticks with a lot of the solid cores from the first edition, but I was thinking they would continue to try and develop some of the other cool features.16:40
SpistersI found an alternative that has me going into the registries and changing a few command lines, but I don't like that solution very much either, ha16:40

tatsu011on another note~ lsusb doesnt want to work for some reason in Karmic19:36
tatsu011it just stalls :|19:37
tatsu011until I can figure out whats wrong I wont be having internet on my linux computer19:38
ibuclawtatsu011, lsusb stalls...19:51
tatsu011I type in lsusb19:51
tatsu011terminal stalls19:51
tatsu011and quite litterally does nothing19:52
ibuclawiirc, a faulty / incompatible USB device is inserted if that happened19:52
ibuclaw*happens19:52
tatsu011.-.19:52
tatsu011dynex is a bitch19:52
ibuclawtatsu011, what you could try is:19:54
ibuclawtail -f /var/log/messages/19:54
tatsu011kk19:54
ibuclawerrr19:54
ibuclawtatsu011, tail -f /var/log/messages19:54
ZachK_!language | tatsu01119:55
ibuclaw!botabuse >:) | ZachK_19:55
ibuclawtatsu011, after running that, *then* insert the dynex device19:55
ibuclawwait 5 seconds, then run: tail -f /var/log/messages19:56
ibuclawand observe any changes in output19:56
mohi1ZachK_, ibuclaw votebot is off :P19:56
ZachK_mohi1: yes i see that19:57
ZachK_mohi1: ubottu will be here soon hopefuly19:57
ibuclawmohi1, not only is it off, it is late19:57
mohi1ah ok19:57
ibuclaw(as in the late Votebot)19:57
ibuclawtatsu011, are there any changes to the tail /logs before and after you plug in the device?20:00
tatsu011several hex codes20:01
tatsu011ibuclaw: also, tail stalled too20:02
ibuclawtatsu011, heh20:04
ibuclawtatsu011, cat /etc/hosts20:05
ibuclawdoes that stall?20:05
ibuclawtatsu011, oh, ignore that... ;)20:05
ibuclawtatsu011, tail didn't stall... it was meant to "just appear to hang there"20:06
tatsu011=o20:06
ibuclawtatsu011, the -f option implies that tail monitors the file20:06
tatsu011ohhhhhh20:07
tatsu011~20:07
tatsu011I see20:07
ibuclawwhen the file gets updated, tail outputs the new appended data20:07
* ibuclaw being blond for a moment ;)20:07
tatsu011ibuclaw: well along with hex codes I saw a few calls to ndiswrapper20:07
ibuclawtatsu011, could you pastebin that?20:09
ibuclawhttp://paste.ubuntu.com20:09
tatsu011ibuclaw: I will once I get it over here ;)20:09
ibuclawtatsu011, I take it dynex is a wireless USB stick?20:09
tatsu011it is20:12
tatsu011ibuclaw: yep it is20:12
tatsu011ibuclaw: http://paste.ubuntu.com/432393/20:14
ibuclawtatsu011, hehe20:17
ibuclawtatsu011, I take it you have used ndiswrapper before to install a driver for it?20:17
tatsu011ibuclaw: correct20:17
ibuclawwell... bad news, looks like that driver failed20:17
ibuclawand ndiswrapper is soft locking up20:17
ibuclawwhat you see there in that pastebin is the ndiswrapper module doing a "traceback"20:18
tatsu011ibuclaw: figures.... dynex has never worked with ubuntu... but I read around and heard of another driver for it....20:19
ibuclawa traceback between the kernel backtracing the steps to the top point where the error occurred.20:19
ibuclawthose hex codes to describe are infact memory addresses that are related to the physical kernel binary file.20:20
ibuclaw*you describe20:20
ibuclawtatsu011, well first think I'd do is remove the ndiswrapper driver then...20:21
tatsu011ibuclaw: restarted and then I removed the driver20:21
tatsu011because the gui interface for ndiswrapper also locked up20:22
ibuclawehe =)20:22
ibuclawtatsu011, does lsusb work after the driver is removed?20:23
tatsu011ibuclaw: yes20:24

ibuclawtatsu011, you probably aren't forwarding usb devices properly to vbox20:41
tatsu011eh?20:41
ibuclawiirc, you need to muddle about a bit with /etc/fstab20:42
ibuclawbut it has been a good few years since I last used it, so that may no longer be the case20:42
tatsu011ibuclaw: sudo gedit /ect/fstab ?20:42

ibuclawthey are wonderful wireless cards that do exactly what they are supposed to do.20:59
ibuclawI will also vouch for any Atheros 5k chips21:00
ibuclawtatsu011, probably best thing to do is visit a local store and make a note of what they sell. Then check back on which is supported by Linux and decide on merits which one to get.21:01
ibuclawideally, you'll want to avoid any device that depends on ndiswrapper in order to get you connected =)_21:02
