shahanit should be noticed to the ubuntu site controller03:51
shahanIs there any one who have used "Remastersys"?03:51
shahanI am having some trouble using it03:52
ChesamoThe backup tool?03:53
shahanChesamo: yes03:54
shahanChesamo: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/remastersys this is the tutorial03:54
Chesamoshahan: Ah. I'm not too familiar with it, I just wanted to clarify. Sorry :C03:54
shahanChesamo: ok03:55
ChesamoShahan: Oh, are you habing trouble with the tutorial?03:55
Chesamohaving*03:55
shahanChesamo: yes03:55
Chesamoshahan: What seems to be the problem?03:55
shahan"Then copy the appropriate settings directories to the /etc/skel directory." check this line03:56
shahanChesamo: in that tutorial03:56
Chesamoshahan: Okay? What's the problem03:57
Chesamoshahan: ooooohhhh, it doesn't say WHAT directories to copy, does it?03:57
shahanChesamo: have u read the line?03:57
shahanChesamo: in that tutorial?03:57
shahanChesamo: yes...03:57
Chesamoshahan: You can see the hidden files, yes? The .<whatever> ?03:58
shahanChesamo: what is "appropriate settings directory"?03:58
Chesamoshahan: It wants you to back up your program settings, which are located in .<program_name>03:58
Chesamoshahan: FireFox and ThunderBird are stored in .mozilla03:58
shahanChesamo: hmm03:59
Chesamoshahan: So you have to figure out which settings you want to keep after running remastersys03:59
shahanChesamo: not clear yet!!!03:59
shahanChesamo: ok let me give u a screen shot03:59
Chesamoshahan: For ease, I recommend http://imgur.com/ since the links are shorter04:00
Appl6Chesamo: Thunderbird is in .thunderbird04:05
ChesamoAppl6: Oh, I'm sorry. That's what I get for trying to troubleshoot and not being on Ubuntu.04:06
Appl6Chesamo: Saying it was certainly more helpful than not saying it; I was just letting you know (I got here a little too late to tell him though).04:07
ChesamoAppl6: Yeah, pinging out is not fun. Thanks though.04:07
shahanI want "ApTon CD" .deb with full dependencies (already got from sourcforge without dpendencies)...04:28
shahanwant a copy.... just double clicking installation04:28
malevshahan, don't know how to do that. what I use to do is:04:30
malevdownload the .deb but from the ubuntu rep, and check there all the dependencies and download them too04:30

shahanChesamo: tnx04:33
Chesamoshahan, malev: You're welcome. It's very handy if you're having dependency issues04:34
shahanChesamo: my internet is making disturb...for this I become disconnected from you, few minutes ago04:34
Chesamoshahan: It's okay04:34
Appl6Sounds like you want aptitude -s install PKG and then write stuff down.04:35
shahanChesamo: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/utils/ I am not getting the AptonCD there04:35
PhreaI need a program that will connect my Olympus camera [it uses XD cards] with my Lucid install04:36

Phayt|FailureHi.  I'm trying to install Ubuntu.  This will be my first Linux distro.  I've burned the iso onto a CD-R using Alcohol 120.  When I try to boot from it, it goes to a loading screen, then freezes up on a black screen with a white prompt in the top left (though you can't actually type anything)05:25
=== Phayt|Failure is now known as Phayt
PhaytWhy is this happening, and what can I do to fix it?05:26
Appl6Phayt: What does the loading screen show?05:35
Appl6Phayt: If it doesn't show anything besides that prompt, it may be because you burned the CD as data instead of burning it as an image.05:36
PhaytAppl6: It's an ubuntu loading screen, for sure.  It says ubuntu05:37
=== PabloRubianes_ is now known as PabloRubianes
blue45_hey there05:37
Phaytit goes to the loading screen, then it shows a black screen that says starting isolinux, something about debian, and a copyright05:37
blue45_im trying to save a session05:37
blue45_i looked at google05:38
Phaytthen goes to the black screen with the prompt.05:38
blue45_but i cant find where it shows session05:38
blue45_i go to system- preferences- then i cant find it05:38
Appl6Phayt: Yeah, that's definitely the start of the boot process.  It's also possible that the ISO you downloaded was corrupted.  Did you torrent it, or did you check it's md5sum (or other hash) before burning it?05:38
blue45_its supposed to be system-prefernces-sessions05:38
blue45_im using the newest ubuntu05:39
Phayti didn't torrent it.  Downloaded it from the ubuntu website.  It recommended checking the md5sum, but the instructions on how to do so appeared to be how to do so in unix.  I don't know how to do it from windows.  Is this something I can google and easily find?05:40
blue45_can anyone help05:40
Appl6Phayt: Yes, if you google "windows md5sum" you will get many relevant programs.  Unfortunately, I've always had access to Linux, so I never had to use a Windows tool, and therefore cannot recommend any.05:42
blue45_what ever i can see no one cal help05:45
blue45_im out05:45
Phaytalright05:48
PhaytAppl6, still here?05:48
Phayti just verified the md5sum05:48
Appl6Phayt: Yep.05:48
Phaytthe hashes are identical05:48
Appl6Phayt: Hm.  It dies so early in the boot process; that doesn't leave you with many options.05:49
PhaytI can try it again while connecting to IRC with my phone05:49
Phaytand tell you exactly what happens in what order05:49
Appl6Phayt: That would be helpful.05:49
Phaytalright, that's my phone05:51
Phayti'm going to restart05:51
Phayti've already got it set to boot from cd in the bios, etc05:51
Appl6phaytmobile: OK.05:53
phaytmobileAlright05:53
phaytmobileFirst a reddish screen05:53
phaytmobileTowards the bottom a battery I think next to a man in a circle I think05:53
phaytmobileThen the starting isoliniz05:54
phaytmobileLinux05:54
phaytmobileAnd now this blank screen with the prompt05:54
Appl6phaytmobile: That's extremely odd that you see icons that look like Ubuntu X before the ISOLINUX screen.05:55
phaytmobileThe disc is still spinning bit the computer doesn't sound like it's doing anything.05:55
phaytmobileIt alternates between silence and periods of activity05:55
Appl6phaytmobile: You never get a chance to type anything or select anything from a menu?05:55
phaytmobileNo change on the screen.05:55
phaytmobileNope. Nothing interactive05:55
phaytmobileOh hey05:56
phaytmobileThis is née05:56
phaytmobileNew05:57
phaytmobileThe resolution just increased05:57
phaytmobileAnd I can now type05:57
phaytmobileHelp returns nothing05:57
phaytmobileNeither does die05:57
phaytmobileD I r I mean05:57
Appl6phaytmobile: In Linux it is "ls" (ell ess).05:58
phaytmobileOh. Now it changed again.05:58
Appl6phaytmobile: It sounds like Linux doesn't agree with your video card.  But there's a lot you can do about it, provided you can boot =).05:58
phaytmobileIt says ubuntu and there are five dots in a loading pattern. I guess I just have to wait longer.05:58
phaytmobileDoes it always take this long?05:59
Appl6phaytmobile: The five dots are good.  No, it usually doesn't take this long, and keep in mind this is significantly slower because it's not only reading off the CD, but it's also doing major decompression on the fly (so they could pack the maximum amount of software on the CD).06:00
phaytmobileStill at the same screen06:00
phaytmobileStill here. Does this usually take seconds minutes or hours the first time?06:03
Appl6phaytmobile: Depending on your hardware, I would say it should take at most a few minutes.06:03
phaytmobileThis computer is very old06:04
phaytmobileProbably six years06:04
Appl6phaytmobile: Oh.  Specs?06:04
phaytmobileJudging by video and sound card06:04
phaytmobileNot sure off the top of my head06:04
phaytmobileWould I be better off with a different distro?06:05
phaytmobileSame screen.06:06
Appl6phaytmobile: Depending on the computer specs, yes.  Ubuntu is not a "lean" distribution by any means, though there are lighter derivatives, like Xubuntu.06:07
Appl6phaytmobile: However, the fact that your computer is old is very much to your advantage in terms of hardware support.  Linux is much better about supporting hardware that has been out for a while.06:08
phaytmobileAha! new screen06:09
phaytmobileDesktop, I thnk06:09
phaytmobileMouse moves06:09
phaytmobileAnd now an install dialogue06:09
phaytmobileExcellent06:10
phaytmobileThank you appl06:10
Appl6phaytmobile: You're most welcome.  In case you didn't know, you have a live CD environment, meaning that it is a fully functional operating system.06:10
Appl6phaytmobile: You can open Firefox, surf the web, use a word processor, write programs, compose email, chat with Pidgin, and just about anything else.06:11
Appl6phaytmobile: That way you can give it a spin before you go to install it.06:11
Appl6phaytmobile: And don't judge it based on speed, a live CD isn't a fair comparison to an OS that's installed on your hard drive =).06:12
phaytmobileAlright. New question.06:26
ddecatorgo ahead an just ask =)06:26
ddecators/an/and06:26
phaytmobileI use firefox in windows on this computer. It's not connecting right now.06:26
phaytmobileThis is the demo06:26
ddecatoron the live CD, firefox won't connect to the internet at all? are you using wireless or wired internet?06:29
phaytmobileWireless06:29
ddecatordoes the network manager applet in the top panel show that it is connected to the wireless?06:30
phaytmobileNo. Do I need to manually add my connection and s s I d?06:31
ddecatorif you click the icon, it should display wireless networks available (if your wireless card is on and supported), so you should just be able to select the network and it will prompt for a WEP/WPA key if needed06:33
=== swoody_ is now known as swoody
phaytmobileNot finding any networks06:34
ddecatoralright, well some wireless drivers are still proprietary, so try going to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and see if it finds a driver for your wireless card06:35
phaytmobileExcellent. Found the dri06:36
phaytmobileVers. There are actually two of them.06:37
ddecatorwhichever is the newest (it should say recommended) but you'll need to be hooked up with a wired connection in order to download the driver =\06:37
phaytmobileCan I download the driver in xp?06:38
phaytmobileAnd then how do I get this os to find it?06:39
ddecatorgood question. i don't know if there is a site that has .deb packages of the proprietary drivers06:39
ddecatorlet me take a look a sec (unless someone else here happens to know)06:40
ddecatorah, looks like restricted packages are still listed in the package archive. phaytmobile: what driver do you need?06:46
phaytmobileMy options are briadcom b43 and briadcom sta06:46
phaytmobileBroadcom06:47
ddecatoris either one of those listed as recommended?06:47
phaytmobileNo06:47
phaytmobileB43 is listed as free06:53
phaytmobileSta as proprietary06:53
phaytmobileWhen I try to activate b43 it fAils and says to look at var log jockey.log06:54
ddecatoralright, i'm seeing the broadcom sta package, which isn't even in restricted. this will hopefully take care of everything https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/broadcom-sta-common_5.10.91.9.3-3_all.deb06:54
ddecatorright, jockey can't download the driver since it doesn't have an internet connection =)06:55
phaytmobileWhen I try to activate sta it asks me to rstart06:55
ddecatorthat doesn't work well on a live CD, didn't think about that =\06:55
phaytmobileAlright. So I download the deb file you linked in xp. Then what?06:56
phaytmobileIf I'm satisfied that I can get what I need with this I plan on installing it.06:56
ddecator.deb files work like .exe files on windows. you can just double-click them in ubuntu and it will install it. just not sure if it will require a restart or not06:56
phaytmobileOh, I see.06:56
phaytmobileAlright you've been very helpful06:57
phaytmobileThank you.06:57
ddecatoranytime =)06:57
ddecatorlet us know if you have any more questions06:57
phaytmobileI'm tired and I'm going to sleep. I'll dl the deb file tomorrow.06:57

petaloidHi all, I know it's a bit early in the morning but I have a question regarding partitioning. When I ran 'sudo fdisk -l', I noticed I had an unaccounted partition, which was 18 mil blocks and was described as "Extended" as opposed to Linux, swap or NTFS. Any ideas on what that partition is?14:41
Silver_Fox_Hello petaloid  :)14:42
Silver_Fox_Not morning everywhere in the world ;)14:42
Silver_Fox_The partition table has room for only four partitions. For more partitions, one of these four partitions can be divided into many smaller partitions, called logical partitions. The original four are then called primary partitions. If a primary partition is subdivided in this way, it is known as an extended primary or extended partition. Typically, the first primary partition will be small ( /dev/hda1, say). The second primary part14:43
Silver_Fox_ition will fill the rest of the disk as an extended partition ( /dev/hda2, say). In this case, the entries in the partition table of / dev/hda3 and /dev/hda4 will be blank. The extended partition can be subdivided repeatedly to give /dev/hda5, /dev/hda6, and so on.14:43
petaloidsince I have six partitions, would that means that my extended encompasses (in size) at least 2?14:46
petaloidI did a quick check and sda6 and sda5 add up (in terms of blocks) to sda414:47
petaloidhmm, even more interesting... the start block for sda6 and the end block of sda5 are the bounds of sda4 as well!14:49
petaloidSilver_Fox_ , thanks! That makes a lot more sense, intuitively as well :D14:50
Silver_Fox_No worried ped14:51
Silver_Fox_ - petaloid14:51
petaloidI have another question! If I wanted to merge two NTFS partitions together, how would I go about that in ubuntu?15:03
Silver_Fox_I am not sure how to do that petaloid , it is not something I have ever done personally.15:04
Silver_Fox_Sorry15:04
Silver_Fox_Perhaps someone else will be able to help you15:04
petaloidthat's cool, thanks for your help anyway15:06
Silver_Fox_No worries, I am sorry I was not able to assist further15:06
petaloidI'll just continue mucking around on community ubuntu documentation until I find a solution!15:06
leoquantpetaloid: no not via the ubuntu live cd, gparted is a minimal/basic tool, on the other hand the gparted live-cd is able to merge ntfs15:13
leoquantthe gparted live a "full- featured" (excuse le mot)15:14
petaloidI see, will it work despite the fact that the partitions are not next to each other?15:14
LzrdKingpetaloid: i suggest you backup any important data before trying to merge ntfs partitions15:15
leoquantpetaloid: that is a good question, no idea. not an ideal situation15:15
leoquantLzrdKing: always15:16
LzrdKinggparted might be able to move the partitions next to each other first15:16
leoquantindeed, and never interrupt mergeactions15:16
LzrdKingleoquant: i used gparted to resize an ntfs partition and i didn't make a backup; of course it was pretty much a bare XP install, but had it gotten munged up, i didn't have a disc to reinstall from15:17
leoquantok15:18
petaloidI wonder if there is a windows utility that could do this easily...15:18
ChesamoLzrdKing: The latest version of GParted does nodestructive merging and resizing... you should still back up your data15:18
Chesamonondestructive*15:18
Chesamopetaloid: Nothing on par with the quality and features of GParted ;-)15:19
petaloidChesamo: Gparted or Gparted-live?15:19
ChesamoPetaloid: gparted-live is just gparted dropped onto a Debian install15:19
Chesamopetaloid: rather, a Debianl LiveCD15:20
LzrdKingpetaloid: the answer is no; you cannot resize a drive that you've booted from; even partition magic is a boot image that you load independant of your hard drives15:21
LzrdKingso either way you need a bootable cd15:21
Chesamopetaloid: I personally prefer RiP Linux for doing partition work... it has GParted installed on it, and it boots into a base X install instead of a full GNOME desktop, so it's much faster http://rip.7bf.de/current/15:22
petaloidso my general strategy would be: boot partition cd of some sort, delete one of the ntfs partitions, move the unallocated space next to the other ntfs, resize the other ntfs to the unallocated15:24
LzrdKingi did think it was weird that gparted-live had so much extra junk in it, but it got the job done quickly and easily15:25
LzrdKingpetaloid: i would think you'd boot with a partition cd, move the two partitions next to each other, then merge them15:25
LzrdKingwhy delete a partition if you don't have to?15:26
petaloidoh, I was thinking about how to do it if gparted didn't have merge15:26
petaloidright that should work15:27
LzrdKingyou mean move; it can merge15:27
petaloidI should've deleted that extra ntfs partition from the start15:27

ZachK_gimme a sec to check this out19:22
Appl6phaytmobile: I'm not sure.  I could suggest: ubuntu/[blank] , ubuntu/ubuntu19:22
Appl6phaytmobile: Or [blank]/[blank]19:23
phaytmobileNope.  Already tried blank blank. Ubuntu ubuntu doesn't work.19:23
Bodsda!doesntwork19:26
VotebotDoesn't work is a strong statement. Does it sit on the couch all day? Does it want more money? Is it on IRC all the time? Please be specific! Examples of what doesn't work tend to help too.19:26
whitelol19:26
phaytmobileHeh.19:26
phaytmobileLike I said earlier19:26
phaytmobileAuthentification failure19:27
BodsdaI wasnt here, cant see scroll back, please repost19:27
phaytmobileTyping from phone so will be slow19:27
Appl6phaytmobile: I'll do it.19:28
phaytmobileK. Thank you19:28
swoodyphaytmobile: well, I see this has been a pretty common problem for a few people, but most are caused by some kind of hardware issue, be it damaged or just incompatible with Ubuntu. You might want to try disabling ACPI19:28
Appl6Bodsda: The live CD for some reason is asking for a login.  He's tried a few username and password combinations, and they are giving him Authentication failures.19:28
Bodsdaooo, cool19:29
Appl6Bodsda: Also, the live CD worked for him last night.19:29
Bodsdasay wha19:29
* Bodsda calls sherlock19:29
Appl6Bodsda: Yeah, I was here helping him with some stuff.19:29
phaytmobileLocked room mystery.19:29
* ZachK_ (Secret Sherlock) responds19:29
* Bodsda will be back in a sec19:30
swoodyphaytmobile: so the liveCD booted just fine on this same computer last night? Did you happen to change any BIOS settings or boot parameters in that time?19:30
phaytmobileNo.19:30
swoodyhmm...19:30
swoodythis is a bit of a chin-scratcher19:30
Appl6swoody: "Just fine" may not be accurate.  It took a really long time and did some odd things at boot.19:30
swoodyah, I see19:31
Appl6swoody: He has an old computer, but it took like 5 minutes to boot.19:31
phaytmobileAlright. This is me. I'm on xp now.19:32
swoodyphaytmobile: are you familiar with how to pull up the Grub2 menu during bootup?19:33
PhaytNo, I'm not.19:33
PhaytAs appl said, it took a long time to boot.  When it did boot, I needed a driver for my wireless card.  So this morning I downloaded it from XP, then tried the CD again.  This time, it asks for a user/pass.19:34
PhaytI began to install it last night, but cancelled the installation.19:34
PhaytI think it may be partially installed, if that's possible.  Is there a way to kill it entirely then begin again?19:35
ChesamoPhayt: Just starting the installation process will reformat and start your drive fresh19:35
Phaytshould I try to install from inside windows, then?19:36
ChesamoPhayt: You mean Wubi?19:36
swoodyphaytmobile: just as your computer finished the POST from your BIOS, press 'Esc' a few times, and the Grub menu should come up19:36
PhaytPossibly.  When I insert the cd while windows is running, one of the options is to install from inside windows19:36
Phaytalright.  i'll try to boot from the cd again and see if i can get to the grub menu.19:37
phaytmobileAlright.  I'm in the grub menu. I think19:39
swoodyphaytmobile: it shows you the various boot options and kernels?19:39
DannyParkIf I have a dual monitor setup, how to I get the second monitor to be an extension instead of additional screen space(ie panel goes across both monitors)19:39
phaytmobileTry ubuntu without installing. Install ubuntu. Check disc for defects. Test memory. Boot from first hard disk.19:40
phaytmobileThose are my options19:40
phaytmobileAlong the bottom it has help language keymap modes accessibility other bound to the function keys19:40
swoodyphaytmobile: are you on a black and white screen, or is it a colorful menu?19:41
phaytmobileDark red.19:41
phaytmobileArrow keys to navigate19:41
Chesamophaytmobile: You're on the CD's boot menu, not GRUB. swoody, doesn't he have to "try Ubuntu" before GRUB actually starts?19:42
ChesamoOh, bye phaytmobile.19:42
swoodywell actually, I think you can enter the parameters there by pressing F419:43
swoodyor rather disabling acpi would be on F619:44
ChesamoYeah, F4 is modes19:44

blue_annagnome terminal and bash are not playing well together on my machine -- it is definitely just gnome terminal, as on xterm it works fine21:39
kaegeehi, I have set Mythbuntu to not auto load MythTV but to auto load XBMC. I set this in the "control panel" (can't remember the Linux name for control panel). Anyway, now when I log in it goes into XBMC and when I exit XBMC it goes back to the login screen. I can't access Ubuntu itself (even under other usernames including root). I'm a complete noob but hope it's simple solution (e.g. hold down "shift" or something when log21:40
LzrdKingdid you try holding down shift?22:02
