[mike]Greetings, I'm looking for some assistance with 'free ATI graphics' card.  I seem to be getting the Quirk described here. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks  Described in ATI AGP Mode Quirk.  I'm really unsure how to proceed due xorg.conf file being absent in 9.10+ IIRC.00:46
kermiachi [mike], what symptom are you seeing & have you tried using the vesa or fglrx driver to see if the issue goes away?00:52
[mike]Sorry, I should have framed up a little better.  Both are installed by default.  I've tried booting with both, and just the free and i get the kernel panic in both instances.  My card is a 9200SE NV280 and the fglrx seems to not associate itself with my card.  I am, however, willing to give it a shot.00:55
kermiac[mike]: so, are you saying the ATI 9200SE & the NVIDIA NV280 both give you kernel panic?01:01
[mike]ls-pci gives:  04:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] [1002:5964] (rev 01)01:04
[mike]RV280, sorry.01:04
kermiac[mike]: ah, ok.. that make more sense :)01:04
[mike]In the log viewer, would there be a specific place that would indicate what type of error I received?  In sum, whenever x starts at the initial login screen, it just freezes.  Using onboard graphics, no freeze.01:06
Appl6[mike]: Most IRC clients notify you if a message contains your handle in it.  It'd be considerate if you placed "kermiac" before your messages to him so he doesn't have to keep checking this channel.01:07
kermiac[mike]: possible /var/log/Xorg.0.log01:10
kermiacthanks Appl6 :)01:10
[mike]kermiac I cant make heads or tails about any of whats listed there.  I'm really gathering from what ive read.  Do you think I should try the other driver and just see what happens as a starting point?01:23
[mike]"kermiac" IRC seems to be epic fail for me too.01:24
=== tenach_ is now known as tenach
kermiac[mike]: yes, that would be a good starting point. if it works with the vesa or fglrx driver that should confirm that it is this issue01:25
kermiac[mike]: kermiac is fine, the quotes aren't needed :) If you include my nick it highlights the message & outputs a notification so that I can see you are talking to me :)01:26
Appl6[mike]: You could try:   grep '(EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log    and pastebin the output.01:27
[mike]kermiac ok ty, first time with IRC ever.01:29
kermiacno probs [mike] :)01:30
[mike]Appl6 (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.01:30

neurohack222hey all, how goes?  just installed ubuntu the other day, my first linux distro, and set up an ampache server - am loving it, works beautifully w/ my android phone..  am curious about setting up webhosting, email server, things like that.. was wondering if anyone could recommend any good websites for learning about how to do these things...07:35
muzhaheyya neurohack22207:40
muzhaneurohack222, do you mean apache?07:40
muzhaWait, nvmd :)07:40
muzhaneurohack222, is the server outward facing?07:40
neurohack222well, i have ampache, it's a music media streaming thing07:41
neurohack222and it has a client for android phones, so i can access all my music @ home over 3g07:41
neurohack222is pretty rad07:41
muzhaI just read op on it neurohack222, it looks ill07:42
muzhaneurohack222, so, is the server outward facing?07:42
neurohack222honestly don't know what you're asking, am pretty inexperienced w/ it all07:43
muzhaneurohack222, where is the server?07:43
neurohack222on my pc07:44
muzhaneurohack222, let me rephrase -- how do you get to the server from your phone? by IP?07:44
neurohack222once installed, you just make a catalog for your music, it indexes, and then you access it through a phone client called amdroid07:44
neurohack222yes, IP address name/password07:44
neurohack222you can set up multiple accounts and what not07:45
muzhaneurohack222, You won't be able to set up a mailserver without a FQDN ( Fully Qualified Domain Name ), and if have one of those puppies, it's worthwhile to get real hosting ( not your home line )07:45
muzhaneurohack222, but webserver -- that's easy07:45
muzhaneurohack222, just 'sudo apt-get install apache2'07:45
muzhaneurohack222, if you want stuff like PHP and MySQL you can install mysql-server and php5 ( and php5-mysql, and all that other jazz )07:46
neurohack222some of those were set up w/ ampache07:46
muzhaneurohack222, then you place the files in /var/www/07:46
muzhaneurohack222, the config file ( the old httpd.conf ) is in /etc/apache/sites-enabled/*07:46
muzhaneurohack222, Now -- questions. I know you got 'em. Let 'em rip07:48
neurohack222am moving to portland or soon and am hoping to live in a neighborhood w/ verizon fios and 25mbps u/l... what would be the advantage of real hosting?07:48
neurohack222was thinking of getting something quiet and energy efficient comparable to a mac mini and some sort of external storage like a drobo07:49
muzhaneurohack222, outsourcing liability for uptime and physical security -- also if you have FIOS, you have a dynamic IP ( it will change after your lease is up for the IP -- typically a few weeks or so )07:49
muzhaneurohack222, if you are serious about running a server you should have it hosted outside your house07:50
muzhaif not, don't worry about that bill07:50
muzhabut you won't be able to get a webserver working easily though neurohack22207:51
neurohack222a lot to learn heh07:52
muzhaneurohack222, hahaha yup. I started off on my home line, you learn a lot like that07:52
muzhaneurohack222, take it slow. This is nothing to rush ;)07:52
muzhaneurohack222, brb, gotta meditate for a hot minute, leave messages, I'll get right back to ya07:54

neurohack222woah, didnt expect it to print out like that, heh, sorry08:10
PD187I was about to say that next time you should08:10
PD187probably make sure that08:10
PD187it doesn't do that.08:10
neurohack222gotcha08:11
PD187at least there's no spam protection/flood prevention08:11
PD187one channel that I'm in, the bot would've kicked you, set the channel +m and +i for 5 minutes for the flooding heh08:11
neurohack222i don't know much about irc, but i'll assume that's not a good thing.08:13
PD187it's not.  It moderated (+m) the channel so that you need voice to speak and +i is invite which only ops can do08:14
PD187the best one was the time that a net split caused one of the ops to be banned for about an hour and he couldn't get back in for maybe 2 because of the +i08:15
muzhahey PD18708:15
muzhaneurohack222, next time, just use pastebin08:15
PD187hello muzha08:15
muzhaPD187, how's tricks?08:15
PD187tricks?08:15
PD187I do believe you have me confused with someone else?08:15
muzhaPD187, Sorry. American slang08:15
muzhaPD187, how are things?08:15
=== muzha is now known as paultag_
PD187not any slang I've heard :P08:16
PD187if I have heard of "tricks", it's not a positive thing...08:16
paultag_PD187, well the root of the word is from hookers -- they turn "tricks"08:16
PD187things are going I suppose.  Still alive so that's good.08:16
paultag_PD187, so they started saying "How are the tricks" or "How's tricks"08:16
paultag_PD187, now it's just kinda common08:16

paultag_morning Akos08:17
paultag_Oh shoot, my other computer went down08:17
paultag_see neurohack222, that's why you need a dedicated server. Computers don't just shut off in a datacenter :/08:18
=== paultag_ is now known as paultag
paultagPD187, you don't have voice, but I see you in here all the time. I could have sworn you were on the team08:18
PD187nope08:18
PD187I idle in here and I don't think it'd be right for me to be on an Ubuntu team since I moved away from it before 10.0408:19
paultagno worries there PD187 :)08:19
neurohack222well, as for now the webhosting is mostly just gonna be a place for me to organize my thoughts, nothing i couldn't live without.08:19
paultagneurohack222, still annoying when it goes down08:20
paultagPD187, so what are you running now?08:20
PD187Mint 808:20
paultagkickass. How do you like it PD187?08:20
paultagP.S. that counts as Ubuntu in my mind08:20
PD187It's enjoyable08:20
neurohack222well, i guess the upside is i wouldn't have to deal w/ a noisy box like my current pc running 24/7 lol08:20
PD187yeah I know it's basically the same thing08:20
paultagneurohack222, haha tell me about it08:20
PD187Mint 9 should be out soon enough too08:21
paultagPD187, I love mint. Good switch08:21
paultagAt least it's not Fedora ;)08:21
Akoshaha08:21
AkosI'd quote that :P08:21
paultaghaha, go for it ;)08:21
PD187I may redo the whole system when 9 comes out08:21
paultagPD187, I love doing that08:22
PD187I gave too much space to / when I divided it up08:22
paultagPD187, nothing beats a fresh install and a nice partition layout08:22
PD187well they tell you to do a fresh install anyways08:22
paultagI always do08:22
paultagI have lost too many systems to apt-get's dist upgrade stuff08:23
paultagit used to be _bad_08:23
PD187well I'm probably going to be trying to figure out how much I should give /root since apparently 40GB is too much08:23
paultagPD187, is it one distro?08:23
PD187yeah08:23
paultag( on the HD )08:23
PD187it's on one of my "smaller" SATA drives (400GB)08:24
AkosI'll probably do the same this week, fresh install, getting back the computer parts from the repair shop \o/08:24
paultagPD187, go for 5-8 GB against /root, 20 for /usr, and the rest for /home :)08:24
paultagsorry, not /root08:24
paultagthe /08:24
paultagthe root :P08:24
paultagAkos, nice :)08:24
PD187I still have to RMA 2 hard drives to Seagate and a 3rd to WD08:25
paultagPD187, fucking a! Me too!08:25
paultagPD187, I have over 2 TB of broken drives I have been meaning to RMA08:25
PD187shame there's no "I send you 1.4TB of hdds and you send me a 1TB upgrade" option08:25
paultagPD187, fucking right!08:25
PD187oh I have more than that08:25
PD187I have a 500GB WD that I got rather angry with08:25
paultagPD187, My two in the box that were good are starting to fail. I'm starting to think that my MoBo is shot too08:25
PD187was out of warranty anyways (well it was in an external at one point)08:25
paultagaye08:26
PD187so it met a demise with a hammer08:26
paultagHa!08:26
PD187I did enjoy running one of my hdds in a freezer recently08:26
paultagPD187, I always take them apart and unscrew the platter from the motor and pull the read arms out08:26
PD187yeah I didn't have the right screw driver08:26
paultagPD187, then run it up to speed and pull the drive body out08:26
paultagPD187, those things fucking fly08:26
paultagPD187, how did the freezer run go?08:27
PD187awesome08:27
paultagPD187, if it gets below spec it will condense internally08:27
PD187I think there was about 15 things that I couldn't copy off it08:27
paultaglegit08:27
PD187well I had a plan08:27
PD187and lots of electrical tape to seal it08:27
paultagaaaahahaha08:27
paultagPD187, there is still moisture inside, so still, don't do it to the main HDDs ;)08:27
PD187I had the SATA cable (and power) running to the hdd in an anti-static bag (sealed with tape), inside another plastic bag (sealed with tape), inside another plastic bag (sealed with tape) and it was taped to the side of the freezer because the 36" SATA cable wasn't long enough otherwise08:28
paultaghahaha, well that's one way to do it :)08:28
paultagthat will still let water condense on the inside08:29
PD187yeah now I have to do it with about 3-4 other hard drives08:29
paultagbut still. well done08:29
PD187at this point, I don't care about condensation.  I cared about the files.08:29
paultagPD187, were they failing?08:29
PD187yep08:29
PD187it decided to fail right when I was backing up to go back to XP on my desktop08:30
paultagPD187, oh, in that case. Nice!08:30
PD187hopefully any condensation isn't there when seagate gets them08:30
paultagPD187, it won't matter, nothing was voided08:31
paultagPD187, it will record the low temp via SMART, but I don't think they will bitch _that_ much08:31
PD187yeah but it seems like they have a long list of "don't do this or it's void"08:31
PD187I don't know if I voided it already by writing on it in sharpie08:31
paultagPD187, apt-get smartmontools and do a -l scan on it08:31
paultagHa!08:31
paultagPD187, should be able to read how low it thought it was08:31
PD187I don't think it'd be able to even get that far.08:32
paultagthat bad, eh?08:32
PD187they're kind of pining for the fjords08:32
paultagthe scan takes like an hour or two to run08:32
paultagyeah, not gana happen08:32
PD187the sad part is I have a 3rd Seagate drive that has a few bad sectors (if disk utility is to be believed) but I don't think I can actually RMA it because it's not quite dead.08:33
paultagPD187, run it on top of your PSU08:33
paultagPD187, get it above 58 degrees or so08:34
PD187eh I'd rather not08:34
paultagPD187, and run it until it starts returning bad data08:34
PD187yeah about that...08:34
paultag( heat de-magnitizes the platter )08:34
PD187that freezer drive I was talking about08:34
PD187I backed it up on the slightly bad sectored HDD that's not quite dead.08:34
paultagAhhhhhh08:35
paultagwell that sucks ass08:35
PD187and you'd think that I would have the space to back up the ~500GB worth of stuff elsewhere but they're all either mostly full or dying :(08:35
paultagAwww08:35
paultagPD187, just start RMAing them one at a time and build up the system disk08:36
paultagBRB guise. I need to snag some food. 3:36 AM snack time.08:36
PD187I would much rather spend the money once to RMA them all then do them individually.08:36
PD187besides I kind of don't have the SATA ports for 3-4 new SATA drives and a new IDE drive08:37
paultagMy goal is to reach sdf by the end of this summer08:41
PD187sdf as in the device?08:41
paultagyessir08:41
PD187in which case been there done that :P08:41
paultagsda, sdb, sdc, sdd, sde, sdf08:41
paultagI have too PD187, but never with just internal drives08:41
PD187if I switched my desktop over to linux it'd be up to uh08:42
paultagdo it :P08:42
PD187sdk08:42
paultagI wonder what happens after z08:42
PD187with sdl being RMAed to Seagate08:42
paultagthink it goes sdza ?08:42
PD187yeah I think so08:42
PD187but my desktop is staying XP for now08:42
PD187or maybe sdaa?08:42
paultageww, nonfree filth :(08:42
paultagPD187, Humm, actually that makes more logical sense08:43
