ner0xany good PIM ( for mail/contacts/etc ) ?00:01
bukayoocrazy7: try adding nomodeset to the end of kernel line..leave initrd as is..could be the plymouth thing00:04
kaddihi, since I upgraded to lucid I find that sometimes a window that is moving out on the left side of my screen reappears on the right side. Is that a feature? And if so how can I use it actively not only by accident?00:07
crooks3o6Does anyone use a Wacom tablet?00:07
crooks3o6kaddi: It's a feature.  It's meant to be used to drag windows from one virtual desktop to the next.00:08
kaddicrooks3o6: how can you differentiate between moving a window out of the screen space and making it drag onto the next virtual desktop?00:09
crooks3o6Do you have more than one virtual desktop?00:09
kaddicrooks3o6: how do I check. I think I may have messed with that some time ago00:10
crazy7bukayoo: doesn't seem to fix it, unfortunately ... but it does say "cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device" , "bash: no job control in this shell" , when I do the init=/bin/bash00:10
crooks3o6kaddi: What window manager do you use?>00:10
kaddikde?00:10
kaddikwin?00:10
crooks3o6ok00:10
crazy7let me try all the different combinations of these options00:11
crooks3o6Settings > System settings > Desktop > Multiple Desktops > Number of Desktops00:12
crooks3o6^ @ kaddi00:12
crooks3o6It should tell you how many you have active.00:12
bukayoocrazy7: ok..i see your symptoms but i use nvidia..fixed it with nomodeset....however my custom kernel is ok00:12
kaddicrooks3o6: ah yes, sorry. I somehow thought you were talking about activities... I have several of the virtual desktops, namely 400:13
crooks3o6Yea00:13
crooks3o6Usually KDE will move a window to the next dekstop over when you drag it to the edge.00:14
crooks3o6Or at least that used to be the standard00:14
kaddicrooks3o6: yes that's still happening00:14
bukayoocrazy7: i had better success with radeon..if fglrx is not that import..got all the eye candies too00:14
giuseppe_!List00:14
ubottuThis is not a file sharing channel (or network); be sure to read the channel topic. If you're looking for information about me, type « /msg ubottu !bot »00:14
kaddicrooks3o6: but sometimes when I start dragging it on my desktop. Eg to drag it onto a different desktop, it will not just disappear on the left, but reappear on the right00:15
bukayoocrooks3o6: it doesn't happen to me.  you can drag it but not all the way..it stops00:16
crazy7bukayoo: oh, I would be fine with going back to radeon at this point... I just de[pareatly want this system to work, in any sense, otherwise I'm going to have to find a a big external HD somewhere, back up all my stuff, reinstall, etc00:16
crooks3o6kaddi: That's odd..  I don't think I've ever experienced that00:17
Rondocan anybody tell me where to find keyboard shortcuts for custom application launcher?00:17
crooks3o6kaddi: change any compositing settings or anything recently?00:18
Rondoinfo i find on this online seems to be outdated00:18
kaddicrooks3o6: no this appeared after I upgraded to lucid and I think kde 4.4 was included in that. I'm still trying to figure out whether this is a bug or a feature :p00:18
crazy7does Kubuntu have some sort of "reinstall" option? or does it have to always format the root fs completely?00:18
bukayoocrazy7: my 5yr+ old laptop with xpress 200m is working nicely with radeon..00:19
crooks3o6kaddi: ahh yea..  I'm still trying to get used to 4.4  I was still using 3.5 until now00:19
bukayoocrazy7: there's no format option but why? you wud never know what garbage is in there. it's better to re-format00:20
crooks3o6I gotta split though.  time to find some food00:20
crooks3o6ciao00:20
crazy7bukayoo: this is a mac pro that worked this morning with radeon. Maybe some other system update screwed it up, and I just hadn't rebooted? either way, it's not working, and it's a little bit frustrating that the solution I bargain down to is to reinstall00:20
crazy7bukayoo: well, becasue I have 100GB of files that are going ot be a bother to backup & reinstall00:20
crazy7I'll have to format my external HD as ext3 if I want to perserve all the permissions on them... which means that I have to backup my backup drive, which is normally NTFS00:21
Rondodoes anybody here use a hotkey to launch their favorite web browser, for example?00:21
bukayoocrazy7: ok..can you purge all the fglrx* and reinstall radeon?00:22
bukayoocrazy7: have you tried the recovery boot?00:22
crazy7bukayoo: that's what I'm trying to do... I booted from a liveCD, mounted the root fs, mounted dev, mounted pro, and chroot'ed in , and removed fglrx00:22
crazy7bukayoo: yeah, same problem00:22
Torchcrazy7: sounds good. did that help?00:23
crazy7Torch: nope. actually, there was an error when uninstalling fglrx ... something about /dev/pty I think00:23
bukayoocrazy7: that error is bec it's trying to write to the terminal00:24
bukayooin chroot00:24
bukayoocrazy7: it's better to boot in recovery mode and the purge all the fglrx00:25
crazy7bukayoo: recovery mode won't boot at all, same problem as normal mode... sits there and does nothing after fsck00:25
XVampireXhow do I setup samba via kubuntu?00:25
bukayoocrazy7: even with nomodeset and remove *splash quiet00:26
bukayoocrazy7: that mihght help00:27
crazy7yeah, took those out00:27
XVampireXI think I'm reverting to gnome >_<00:28
RondoXVampireX: why?00:32
bukayooXVampireX: have you tried systemsettings-> sharing?00:32
crazy7hrm installing a new kernel inside my chroot gives "grep: /proxc/modules: No such file or directory"00:35
crazy7er, /proc/modules00:35
bukayoocrazy7: you need to mount proc and devs too ..can't remember but  google for chroot00:36
bukayoocrazy7: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot00:37
crazy7yeah, did that00:38
crazy7there is a /proc/module , but not a /proc/modules00:38
crazy7hrm, when installing/uninstalling kernels from the chroot environment, it does say, "DKMS: uninstall completed. Uninstalling: fglrx 8.723.1)" .... so it must not actually be off the system00:57

DyrconaI want to build kopete from source so I can apply a patch from bugs.kde.org to see if it resolves a problem that I have with the Jabber protocol.14:06

Snarksteryou could try that. the uuid doesnt change or so as I understand it20:10
vbgunzSnarkster: nah, the uuid should never change. but all this hoop jumping completely defeats the purpose of this external disk being hot pluggable20:11

BluesKajvbgunz, so it lists in fstab ?20:17
vbgunzI found a bug report on it and even tried adding a hal preference for esata but nothing is really working20:17
vbgunzBluesKaj: I did not enter it into fstab. was hoping I could really use the hotplug for it20:18
vbgunzplugging it with usb it is hotpluggable. plugging it in through esata, well , device notifier doesn't say a thing20:19
BluesKajsorry vbgunz , I'm not familiar with hotplugging devices , is that similar to pnp20:19
vbgunzBluesKaj: I'd say it should be. if you swap the esata for usb right now, I can plug it in, and device notifier detects it with no problems. everything works but transfers are slow. esata is just a faster connection and it should be detected like usb but simply isn't. I read this worked up until KDE 4.3.4 but died thereafter20:21
BluesKajwhat format is esata ..external sata drive?20:22
vbgunzyeah exactly20:22
vbgunzI have 2 partitions. 1 is ext4 and the other is ntfs20:22

vbgunzBluesKaj: so, here is the summary on the esata hot pluggable disk. it does work with the hal preference link I mentioned before. The thing is, all disk even those that are internal show up in device notifier as removeable. the simple solution there though is to hide them and you'll never see them. so, by putting in the hal preference, my esata is indeed hotpluggable and device notifier hides my internal disk for me. it works.21:48
