oxymoronNeed help, how to restore MBR on WIndows 7 when Windows recovery CD cannot detect it? :S09:53
bazhangis this a dual boot with Kubuntu?09:53
oxymoronbazhang: Yes09:53
bazhangoxymoron, considered asking in ##windows ?09:54
oxymoronbazhang: I tried on grub channel yesterday but it didnt work.09:54
bazhangyou wish to fixmbr or fix grub09:54
oxymoronbazhang: I have also tried different NTFS partition managers on Hirens Boot CD but nobody can do what I want to do.09:54
oxymoronbazhang: I wish to do whatever it takes to restore Windows somehow.09:55
oxymoronGrub works09:55
bazhangoxymoron, did you update grub?09:55
moetunesbut no windows mentioned in grub?09:55
oxymoronI can select WIndows 7 in grub, but when select I only get GRUB and a blinking "_"09:55
oxymoronbazhang: Yes of course I updated grub09:56
bazhangos prober perhaps09:56
moetunes!grub209:56
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since Karmic. For more information and troubleshooting on GRUB2 please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub209:56
oxymoronbazhang: Os-prober already done that too, no change09:56
bazhangdoes sudo fdisk -l show it09:56
oxymoronbazhang: http://pastebin.com/C5pxqKZq09:57
oxymoronbazhang: Its the sdc1 one thats Windows09:58
oxymoronbazhang: Then something happened with sdb1 when resizing it and then canceled process in Kpartitionmanager .... it says its unformatted but type is somekind of RAW NTFS09:59
* oxymoron doesnt understand why partition tables should be so hard to edit ...09:59
oxymoronbazhang: SO yes fdisk shows them all10:00
bazhangoxymoron, tried booting with a livecd/gparted livecd and see what that says?10:00
Iteswhat is the commend to delete a torrent from rtorrent ?10:00
bazhangI would suspect rtorrent has a help file or such10:01
oxymoronbazhang: Hmm interesting, maybe gaprted livecd could work somehow. But I think somekind of NTFS livecd would work best, some Acronis Disk Manager, but I am not sure I have it.10:01
moetunesItes: ctrl+d10:01
bazhanggparted livecd is only 60MB10:01
oxymoronbazhang: Space is not a issue ;) Do you think I can place it parallell to Kubuntu LiveCD on my USB stick?10:02
oxymoronbazhang: Or will it be a conflict?10:02
Itesthanks10:02
moetunesnp10:02
oxymoronThen USB stick is faster to live cd boot from than DVD/CD, corret? :)10:03
* oxymoron thinks its funny he got into all this only because KPartitionManager said partition on sdb1 is out of bounds, more cylinders than available ...10:04
oxymoronEverything worked in his system and sdb1 was mountable10:04

oxymoronIn Kpartitionmanager: Unknown disk label? what10:49
moetunesthere's been a few mentions in here of kpartitionmanager not playing nice - care to install gparted?10:50
oxymoronmoetunes: Gparted says the same thing ...10:51
moetunessays something about the disk label then doesn't it10:52
oxymoronmoetunes: Gparted also says unknown disk label and says the partition is unallocated but its NOT. Other NTFS applications in WIndows found it, but they cannot convert it into regular NTFS again :(10:53
oxymoronIf everything is alright in partitions tables, then partition managers is alright, but if something is wrong they doesnt work at all. It is when its fucked up when you ACTUALLY neeed the partition manager not when it works :D10:54
moetunesoxymoron: naturally ms tools for there own fs will be better but if they can't do anything with it...10:55
tsimpsonoxymoron: I know you know better10:55
moetunesoxymoron: tried fixmbr?10:55
oxymoronmoetunes: It can do some things, but my opiotns are limited in dos environment ... I need to boot from Windows, but then GRUB cannot bootload into Windows 7 lolllllll10:55
oxymoronmoetunes: fixmbr from where?10:56
moetunes!fixmbr10:56
ubottugrub is the default boot manager for Ubuntu releases before Karmic (9.10). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto - See !grub2 for Karmic onwards.10:56
oxymorontsimpson: Sorry :P10:56
oxymoronmoetunes: I dont want to restore grub, grub works10:56
moetunesoxymoron: I would go to ##windows and find out how to get the windows bootloader back then reinstall grub once windows boots10:57
oxymoronmoetunes: In #grub they said Windows 7 MBR is overwritten by grub ... and thats why it cannot boot, but how da heck should I fix that? :S10:57
moetunesoxymoron: 'cause the filesystem isn't right from what you've said10:57
moetunesoxtmin ##windows they will know how to restore the windows bootloader10:58
oxymoronmoetunes: I have tried to get Windows bootloader back with WIndows Recovery CD but it doesnt find WIndows, hahahaha :D10:58
moetunesi would do that first10:58
moetunesoxymoron: then how could you boot it?10:59
oxymoronAlright, I try Windows but probably would go berserk in there :D10:59
oxymoronmoetunes: I dont know really, before I could boot Windows7 but now I cant. If nothing works I will reinstall clean installation ;)10:59
moetunesoxymoron: you mentioned stopping a resize in the partition manager?10:59
oxymoronmoetunes: Not a resize, moving actually.11:00
moetunesk11:00
oxymoronmoetunes: But that was on another drive, not where Windows is isntalled.11:00
oxymoronmoetunes: Its two isolated problems I have, nonbootable Windows on sdc drive and screwed up sdb partition11:01
moetunesoxymoron: you wouldn't be getting this frustrated if something major isn't borked mate11:01
oxymoronmoetunes: How do you mean?11:01
moetunesoxymoron: the rescue cd can't find windows and grub can't find windows so something major is wrong - and with stopping the move...11:02
oxymoronmoetunes: Actually I think this is kind of "fun". If nothing works I just do clean install, but I would like to fix it without cleanup as I always do in the end anyway xD11:02
edi_99Hi guys. How do I check if I have my graphics card drivers installed? Thanks.11:03
oxymoronmoetunes: Yes, something is wrong yes ... But the disks is found and the partiions as well. Now I think I freaked up MBR on Windows more when fixing with fdisk utlities ....11:03
moetunesoxymoron: from what you said it is a short stick you're using to push things uphill :]11:04
moetunesedi_99: read the log - /var/log/Xorg.0.log11:05
moetunes:]11:05
oxymoronmoetunes: Hehe :P I cant understand why the partition managers cannot do anything. There is data there and should/could be converted to regulat NTFS even if its moved and converted to some kind of RAW NTFS data.11:05
oxymoronmoetunes: Regarding Windows I need Windows to fix Windows xD Moment22 :D11:06
oxymoronIts so ironic, Linux cannot fix Windows and Windows cannot fix Linux :D11:06
moetunesoxymoron: it is not something I'm too familiar with but isn't raw ntfs unformatted?11:06
oxymoronmoetunes: Yes it says its unformatted ... thats because I cancelled in move process because it went wrong and partition manager frooze when pressed cancel xD11:07
oxymoronIts not very fun knowing I have 500 GB data in there ...11:07
moetunesoxymoron: so it won't have data there right?11:07
oxymoronI have backed up the most important data (Photos)11:08
oxymoronmoetunes: It moved the data and then tonight I moved the data with Acronis Disk Director Suite to the beginning.11:08
moetunesso no windows os to boot11:08
oxymoronmoetunes: I think the smartest thing todo right now is to do a clean Windows install, I will not loose anything important anyway on WIndows if clean isntall it.11:09
oxymoronmoetunes: Then INSIDE windows I can install proper applications todo more magic that I cannot do in recovery mode11:09
moetunesoxymoron: would be quicker11:09
oxymoronmoetunes: Yes, it always point to clean install ... sometimes youre lucky fix it but mostly you just screw up more things when trying to fix the real problem :D11:10
Gamarok___hey guys11:10
oxymoronmoetunes: Like upgrading from Karmic => Lucid is worse than just do a clean install of Lucid over Karmic.11:11
moetunesoxymoron: it's called digging the hole deeper11:11
oxymoronmoetunes: Hopefully Kubuntu devs will fix it in the future so its forward compatible with itself ... lol11:11
oxymoronmoetunes: Not sure, but I think its the settings in old apps and libraries isnt compatible with the new settings in the new apps (I mean settings in ~ folder)11:12
* oxymoron would like to have some sort of "restore to factory settings" button in Linux :D11:12
oxymoronAnd then change which things I want to factory reset11:13
* oxymoron doesnt look forward to burn Windows 7 and install it again ... he hate the screen after loading Windows files, nothing happens in several minutes, just that ugly blue background with the ugly bird :D11:14
oxymoronIf he start to hate all OS so much he maybe get so much energy that he programming hes own freaking OS from scratch in rocket speed :P11:15
moetunesheh11:16
oxymoronmoetunes: I mean how hard can it be, Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds and those guys could do it, why cant I?11:16
oxymoronJust odnt know, fixing BIOS => MBR => kernel => desktop => awesomeness ...11:17
oxymoronIts like million programming lines, probably a lot more :P11:17
oxymoronHopefully its possible to go around BIOS and bootload directly from the motherboard signal when press on button :P11:18
oxymoronmoetunes: Hahahahaha damn it, Windows 7 ISO file is on sdb1 ... need to download it again before bruning it lol :D11:19
oxymoronmoetunes: Lucky its 10 MB/s download speed then ...11:20
moetunesoxymoron: you know what gets said about backups... :]11:22
oxymoronmoetunes: Yeah, that nobody backups ...11:22
moetuneshehe11:22
oxymoronmoetunes: Companies with big servers does ... regular users doesnt and hopefully never need. Only things I backup is my programming files, the only important things really.11:23
oxymoronmoetunes: But I think I might buy 2x1 TB drive soon for RAID and backup :P Not sure about 80 GB SSD for 250$ though, its not priceworthy11:24
oxymoronmoetunes: Maybe its also time to burn All Macgyver and Prison Break seasons on DVD and store them somewhere else then on my driver ...11:25
oxymoronmoetunes: But I havent seen a big Macgyver SuperBox anywhere here in Sweden, I would maybe buy it if its priceworthy enough.11:25
oxymoronmoetunes: WOW I found IT all 139 episodes in one single box <311:26
oxymoronmoetunes: Only 179.207 USD ... xD11:27
moetunesoxymoron: I use an old pent3 for a backup system 'cause you never know when thens will go wrong - and I've just started burning to cd as well11:28
oxymoronmoetunes: Whats pent3? :P What if the computer burn up, the backups was unneccesary? :D11:30
oxymoronmoetunes: Btw, does Kubuntu warn me when one drive is going uhm unuseful? :P11:30
moetunesoxymoron: pent3 = pentium 3 - and now I'm burning disks and storing them elsewhere11:31
moetunesoxymoron: there are smarttools for doing that - kubuntu doesn't on it's own afaik11:32
oxymoronmoetunes: Ah, silly me should have guessed that you ment pentium :P I wonder if its "good" doing backups on Blueray discs, like 300 GB discs? :P11:33
