ubuntu91human2hello, what's the difference between ubuntu and kubuntu??00:07
ubuntu91human2and....... how do I install Tor on ubuntu?00:08
guillomubuntu uses Gnome, kubuntu uses KDE00:09
HamraUbuntu uses the GNOME desktop environment, which is simple, and easy to use. Kubuntu uses the K desktop environment (KDE), powerful, feature full, and well... being a kubuntu user... pwns GNOME :P00:09

keebodHello Guys00:20
KenBW2can anyone explain this when i try to set up a CVS server: http://www.nomorepasting.com/getpaste.php?pasteid=3311000:21
keebodI wanted to Format my Ipod in ubuntu, but whenever i tried it, its giving me an error. "Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdc" :(00:21
keebod"sdc" is a drive, i know. but, how will i create sdc1 or sdc2 or anything unless it lets me? :-s00:22
KenBW2keebod: you ever used gparted?00:23
keebodKenBW2 even gparted could not do it. in fact its worse in gparted. it did not even detect /dev/sdc :(00:23
KenBW2hmm, thats strange00:24
KenBW2im not familiar with iPods, but they sort of hide their filesystems don't they?00:25
keebodKenBW2: well, its hfs+.. as its a product from apple? so i installed hfstools, hfsprogs so that the file system is detected00:26
sidneyi got one of those security popup windows you normally get in MS Windows am I going to have problems here?00:28
markus_sidney: In your browser? Or where?00:28
sidneyIn Firefox00:28
sidneymarkus_: in firefox00:29
markus_sidney: What does it say?00:29
markus_sidney: Like they did not buy a certificate? Add an exception. Has nothing to do with the OS00:29
KenBW2keebod: try http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fusemoslinux.blogspot.com%2F2010%2F05%2Flucid-no-automonta-tus-pendrives-aqui.html00:30
sidneymarkus_: i took screen shots but is says i have security threats00:30
markus_sidney: This security companies are a mafia! Make everybody pay for their damn certificates. Foget it when you trust the site00:30
keebodKenBW2: well it asked me to edit the modules directry in /etc.. surprisingly i dont have such a folder!00:31
sidneywell maybe i'll just delete these backgroungs i downloaded00:32
keebodKenBW2:  error message was "no protocol specified"00:32
markus_keebod: I have than message with akonadi00:33
keebodmarkus_: i'm sorry. i did not understand what you meant :(00:34
markus_keebod: Sorry, did not read the rest of your messages. I get protocol errors with akonadi ;)00:35
keebodmarkus_: well, my problem as of now is that i formatted the ipod with diskutility(gui) and then tried partitioning it, which did not work. so as of now its an electronic device capable of storing things but no file system on it :( without a file system how to mount it? :-S00:36
markus_keebod: I will never ever buy any apple product. Closed source is not my thing . With my smartphone I have 35 Gigs thats enough for all my music :) So can't be of any help here.00:38
keebodmarkus_: i did not buy it. i will never buy it :P my friend gifted it to me for my birthday :)00:38
markus_keebod: Okay, so time to play with it and break it ;)00:40
keebodmarkus_: i already broke it, i guess :( god! you have any thoughts on how to create a file system on an empty usb hard disk? coz, right now thats what my ipod is :P00:41
markus_keebod: wasn't that something like "mkfs /dev/sda1". But before you have to use fdisk I guess00:42
keebodoh yeah! mkfs :D how did i forget that command when my RHCE exam is scheduled next month? :O00:43
keebod@markus_: oh yeah! mkfs :D how did i forget that command when my RHCE exam is scheduled next month? :O00:43
markus_keebod: What does that exam include? Only server side?00:44
keebodmarkus_: well, not really. it has three modules. 1) red hat linux essentials.. 2) red hat network essentialsd and security administration.. 3) linux system administration00:46
markus_keebod: Huh. Seems pretty red hat focused to me. Aren't there certificates that are more general?00:46
keebodmarkus_: obviously. RHCE means Red Hat Certified Engineer. its required for me to apply for jobs in Europe :P00:48
markus_keebod: Strange. Red Hat is US based. Most companies I know use Debian or Ubuntu. I am european even when I am not living there anymore ;)00:49
keebodmarkus_: but could you suggest me any other linux based certification? i've never heard of any other :( at least not in india. thats where i'm from.00:50
Tacoboblooking for a little help getting a wireless card going on a freshly installed Kubuntu 10.4 box, this machine does not have a wired connection and can not at this point, I have downloaded ndiswrapper 1.56 , the drivers for my dated linksys wmp11v4 card, and even gcc 4.5, have these stored on a flash drive now. But at this point I am lost, and none of the docs I have found on the net seem to work without errors. Starting with the compiler, I00:50
markus_Tacobob: I got ndiswrapper working once. But I found it too difficult. I prefer to buy a usb stick now that just works. They are cheap nowadays ;)00:55
e_t_keebod: There's the Linux Professional Institute (www.lpi.org) and Canonical offers Ubuntu certifications. I think Novell has certs too.00:57
keebodmarkus_: oh. its a news to me. i will look into it. but i'm sure where i'm right now, those are not available. Novell certification for N+ is available though00:58
markus_keebod: Bangalore?00:59
keebodmarkus_: Hyderabad :P but glad to know that you know about Bangalore :D you told me you are a european. well, which country?01:00
markus_keebod: germany. Have been to india once ;)01:00
keebodmarkus_: omg!! Germany is what i'm trying for :P01:01
markus_keebod: Speak german already? Guess thats the main obstacle?01:01
keebodnot just speaking. i should prove it with a certificate that i learnt it! that too only Goethe Institute certificate is accepted!01:02
keebodmarkus_: not just speaking. i should prove it with a certificate that i learnt it! that too only Goethe Institute certificate is accepted!01:03
keebodmarkus_: if i can speak German, will it be helping me to learh dutch(netherlands one)?01:04
markus_keebod: There is a göthe institute in all countries. Here in colombia its more or less close to where I live. But colombians are great artists but do not really liek to program. Thats what I am here for ;)01:04
keebodmarkus_: in india i have never heard of an institute that charges even 1/4th of what Goethe charges :(01:05
markus_keebod: English will help you in germany. But german is obligatory. I am still improving my spanish. Quite difficult though :(01:08
keebodmarkus_: Spanish is cool :P01:08
markus_keebod: I think one of the languages of the future. Besides Arabic, Hindu and Mandarin.01:09
keebodmarkus_: All the three languages you mentioned are pretty ancient i guess :P01:14
markus_keebod: I mean german is dying out as is english So better learn a language where the population is growing. Wow, we are stuff that is strongly kubuntu related ;)01:15
keebodmarkus_: ubuntu means 'towards humanity' other than 'beer'.. right? humanity requires language ;)01:16
markus_keebod: beer, languages and ubuntu. Sounds reasonable ;) If we add sex and rock it could be sufficient for me ;)01:18
keebodmarkus_: that might get us banned or kicked out :|01:18
karurusex ubuntu and rock'n'roll01:18
keebodmarkus_: by the way, i recovered my iPod :D01:19
markus_keebod: really? by just formatting it?01:19
keebodnow i need something or some kinda library files or tools to mount the HFS+ file system :-S01:19
keebodmarkus_: lol. yea. the terminal way. it asked me whether it should proceed even though i did not specify a partition, but the whole disk!. i typed 'Y'.. now iots done :D01:20
markus_I you why I like this channel so much more than the official ubuntu channel. Always when I write something there that is not directly related to the OS I get "Please switch to ubuntu off-topic" ;)01:20
keebodmarkus_: hahaha. yea. the bot in ubuntu channel is a bit rude :P01:21

vonRankeNon-KDE programs won't play any sounds. For example, Amarok will play music, but VLC won't. Most of the troubleshooting guides I can find seem to be directed at the idea that there is no sound at all, which isn't my problem. Has anyone heard of this happening before? I'm probably going to try just a fresh reinstall, and hope that does it.03:25

ridini do not how to explain, but how do you "activate the performance mode" in kde?03:36

jarakhello03:37
aeonorisHey..?03:38
Carutsu__wow I just updated my kernel and I get the following error while trying to start X:03:39
Carutsu__(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your (EE) NVIDIA: system`s kernel log for additional error messages. (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0) (EE) No drivers available.03:39
aeonorisYeah, drivers are dependant on kernal03:39
aeonorisHmm03:39
aeonoriskernel*03:40
Carutsu__well I just fell back to the older kernel until it's fixed03:40
Carutsu__kind of a shame though03:40
Carutsu__hehe03:40
aeonorisThat's probably wise.  You could probably compile the driver to fit the new kernel, but uh, that's a lot of work03:40
aeonorisWhat does the new kernel offer?03:40
aeonorisI dunno much about kernels03:41
e_t_Carutsu__: you need both the kernel and the kernel headers. The nvidia installer is actually compiling a kernel module, so it needs the header files.03:41
Carutsu__e_t_: hm, wouldn't the headers be installed when I installed the nvidia driver?03:42
Carutsu__I mean, I got it working in the older kernel03:42
e_t_Carutsu__: you would think so, but I've had situations where apt didn't grab the new headers. I don't know why. Just install linux-headers-generic and you should be OK.03:43
e_t_ridin: the power and performance settings are in System Settings, on the Advanced tab, under Power Management.03:44
Carutsu__e_t_: I'll give it a try, should I reinstall the nvidia drivers afterwards?03:44
Carutsu__or how do I trigger the recompilation?03:44
e_t_The easiest way is to reinstall nvidia. That *should* trigger the compilation.03:45
Carutsu__e_t_: thank you very much for your help :)03:45
ridinthanks e_t_03:50
e_t_sidney: Network interfaces are stored in /etc/network/interfaces. That is a file, so to open it, type on the command-line "sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces".03:50
ridine_t_, how do you stop having kde from loading the programs from the last session03:50
sidneye_t_:  thanks03:51
e_t_ridin: That is also in System Settings, under Session Manager. You probably want to select the option "Start with an empty session".03:52

well_laid_lawnlots of places to learn about it for free on the net09:09
dukemyeah..but getting a job without knowing someone to get me in would be hard dont u think?09:11
well_laid_lawnwith some qualifications you prob have to start at the bottom - depends on your quals tho09:11
dukemlike certifications and stuff?09:12
well_laid_lawnthere's community colledge stuff that would get you a foot in the door09:13
well_laid_lawnI don't really know alot about it :] - sitting still indoors all day is not my thing...09:13
dukemyea thats  where im going..then maybe get an intern for some experience09:13
well_laid_lawnyep09:14
dukemwelll you seem to kno bout it lol09:14
well_laid_lawnheh - been around a while :]09:14
dukembut it is time consuming your right..ive been reading stuff for like 9 hours now lol..and didnt even realize how much time has passed09:16
well_laid_lawnthat gets me all the time - thought i"d made a gtk calendar in like 2 hours but it was 5 - lots of learning involved in that09:18
dukema gtk calender..like you programmed one or something?09:20
well_laid_lawnyeah - wrote it in c using gtk libs for the gui09:20
well_laid_lawnpretty simple once I figured out how...09:21
hyb.t nanjing09:23
dukemsee programming i dont get..you write one up and everything..but then how do you use it to like make a actual 'module or w.e for your program09:23
dukemlike the image parts09:24
well_laid_lawnyou need to "compile" it - that turns it into what the comp can read and then you run it09:24
dukemit it just createes these modules youve typed up09:25
well_laid_lawncomps use 0's and 1's - compiling turns the words you typed into that09:25
well_laid_lawnif you type them right...09:26
well_laid_lawnand you an executable file that makes the comp do stuff09:26
well_laid_lawnhave*09:26
dukemyeah..i just dont get how it creates something..like this page for unstance..the headlines titles its kinda crazy to think about09:27
dukemi just read someone having same problem with xchat not being found but no solution yet09:27
well_laid_lawn!packages09:28

well_laid_lawnxchat is09:33
well_laid_lawnxchat (2.8.6-2.1ubuntu4) [universe]    IRC client for X similar to AmIRC09:33
well_laid_lawnhow that gets solved is beyond me...09:34
well_laid_lawnxchat-gnome is in main repo - maybe your apt-get update failed for some reason - give it another shot please09:35
dukemis there a way to download it from there..i see no download parts09:35
shadeslayerdukem: they should be listed at the bottom09:37
dukemok i found it..but do i save the file..or open it with something09:37
shadeslayerdukem: just save it for now,and then double click to install09:37
well_laid_lawnno - there would be too many dependencies like gtk libs etc09:37
shadeslayerwell_laid_lawn: of course,he needs those deps as well09:38
dukemso dont save it09:38
well_laid_lawnthe universe repo hasn't been included yet - check the sources.list file again09:38

Atritas{BG}Barbarian: sudo ethtool eth0 | grep Link10:44

Atritas{BG}Barbarian: ...which means you can't get an IP address, because the cable itself is either not connected or does not detect any connectivity.10:47
{BG}BarbarianI'm double checked that the cable is plugged in properly, and the router works fine10:48
{BG}Barbariananyway I can give it a manual IP?10:48
{BG}Barbarianmaybe the DHCP server is crashed or something10:48
Atritas{BG}Barbarian: So there is probably nothing wrong with your network settings per se. Try unplugging and reattaching the cable  on both ends and see if you get a link afterwards.10:48
well_laid_lawn{BG}Barbarian: time to try   sudo lshw   and see if the nic is disabled10:49
Atritas{BG}Barbarian: The DHCP server has nothing to with this.. The "link" is way before DHCP is even possible.10:49
well_laid_lawneth0 is not up10:50
{BG}Barbarian| grep nic returns nothing10:50
well_laid_lawnof cause -  sudo lshw10:50
{BG}Barbarianhmm, DHCP server works fine10:53
{BG}Barbarianand I know now its not caused by booting with router off10:53
{BG}Barbarianbut by putting the computer on sleep10:53
{BG}Barbarianand then turning off the power10:53

Atritas{BG}Barbarian: You could try unloading and reloading the corresponding kernel module and see if you get a link then.10:56
well_laid_lawnis the nic disabled tho?10:57
{BG}Barbarian sudo lshw10:58
{BG}Barbarianreally big story10:58
well_laid_lawnnics about half - two thirds down10:58
{BG}Barbarianits NIC?10:59

{BG}Barbarian| grep nic or NIC both return 010:59
well_laid_lawnno - I just call it nic10:59

well_laid_lawnsudo ifconfig eth0 up   then   ifconfig   - if eth0 doesn't show then...11:16
{BG}BarbarianI did, sudo apt-get remove network-manager11:17
well_laid_lawnthe nic could be dead - h/ware does die sometimes11:17

Torchperlmonkey: you cannot. it's not.12:12
perlmonkeyI don't have time for this crap12:12
Torchperlmonkey: then don't use kubuntu12:12
perlmonkeywhat else can I use instead?12:12
well_laid_lawnthat's a bit unkind Torch12:13
Torchperlmonkey: no idea. it works for me. on kubuntu.12:13
=== dendro-afk is now known as dendrobates
Torchwell_laid_lawn: saying a central piece of kde is crap to a kde dev doesn't come across as super nice either.12:13
well_laid_lawnof course - but there is surely a better option12:14
perlmonkeyTorch if it fails and gives cryptic errors immediately after an upgrade that's not a very positive sign12:14
well_laid_lawn!worksforme12:14
ubottuCommon Sense: Just because you can, does not mean you should (and especially recommend to others). Think before you do. "Works for me" does not mean it is ok. The latest version of everything is not always useful if you aim for stability. Please see http://geekosophical.net/random/worksforme/12:14
perlmonkeyTorch if it requires me installing mysql server on a workstation system, and messing around with all kind of fixes that's also not a positive sign12:14
Torchperlmonkey: it's just that kubuntu didn't set it up properly for you during install. that's hardly akonadi's fault.12:15
perlmonkeyalso my Thunar file browser has stopped working since moving to 10.04 and my workspaces manager12:15
well_laid_lawnTorch: got a clue on setting it up pls?12:16
Torchwell_laid_lawn: just follow the troubleshooting guide. usually it requires to remove apparmor, i think.12:16
perlmonkeyTorch but why do I need that? I don't want to run it or have mysql server running that uses up a lot of memory12:16
Torchperlmonkey: kde pim needs a sane backing store. akonadi is that backing store. if it didn't use mysql (it can use postgres, too), it would have to do all the stuff mysql does for it on its own. that would need more memory and be slower.12:17
Atritasperlmonkey: The decision has been made to use a mysql driven backend for all kinds of information management. That's what akonadi is basically. If that's good or bad is a very subjective matter.12:18
perlmonkeywhat's pim?12:18
Torchperlmonkey: basically kontact12:18
perlmonkeyI don't want kontact12:18
Torchhttp://pim.kde.org/12:18
AtritasTorch: are you akonadi dev as well?12:18
Torchperlmonkey: you want kmail, it's part of kontact.12:18
perlmonkeycan't I disable that and still use kmail?12:18
TorchAtritas: no12:19
perlmonkeythat sucks12:19
Torchperlmonkey: no.12:19
perlmonkeythe address book feature has never even worked properly in kmail anyway12:19
Torchperlmonkey: i don12:19
Torchoops12:19
Torchperlmonkey: i don't think complaining here will solve anything for you.12:19
Torchperlmonkey: if your install is broken, fix it and complain to kubuntu. if KDE has bugs, file a bug report and complain to KDE.12:20
perlmonkeysorry i'm just annoyed, i spent hours upgrading to solve some bugs and I've ended up with more new bugs I didn't have before12:20
Torchperlmonkey: well, i know why i'm still on karmic.12:20
MamarokTorch: he can install kmail as a standalone, no need for kontact12:20
perlmonkeyand the original bugs are still not solved, so its been a waste of time all round12:20
TorchMamarok: i didn't say he could not.12:21
Atritasperlmonkey: ChangeLogs are your friend, especially in the OSS world :)12:21
Torchperlmonkey: as i said, if you find kde bugs, file them on bugs.kde.org12:21
Torchperlmonkey: anyway, akonadi can be fixed. if you follow the troubleshooting guide, you'll most probably get it working.12:22
MamarokTorch: [13:18] <Torch> perlmonkey: you want kmail, it's part of kontact.12:22
Mamarokperlmonkey: you can install both separately kmail and kaddressbook, for now Aknoadi is not mandatory12:22
perlmonkeyhere is a persistent problem, my system loses sound every time I boot up if I open a browser.. I have to kill every app using alsa and reload alsa every time12:22
Mamarokthat worked for me, Akonadi runs without trouble here on Kucid12:22
perlmonkeysometimes even that doesn't work and I have to reboot and do it again12:22
Mamarokperlmonkey: you loose sound in the browser or the other apps?12:23
perlmonkeyMamarok thanks I could try that12:23
Mamarokperlmonkey: rebooting is usually not needed, just restarting KDE should restart phonon, unless you use pulseaudio, then I don't know12:23
perlmonkeyMamarok I lose sound completely, I'm not sure it's caused by the browser using sound, but it does seem to happen if my browser opens to a flash video before I use any other sound app12:24
perlmonkeyI got pulseaudio after an upgrade, and ever since then had problems with sound..before that i had no problems12:24
Mamarokperlmonkey: KDE uses phonon, you shouldn't have to change anything or even restarting alsa, phonon handles sound12:24
Atritasperlmonkey: According to your experienced problems so far, i think you may have had a problem with or during your upgrade run. Maybe you should do a fresh install and everything will work fine "suddenly"?12:25
perlmonkeyI been using xcfe412:25
Mamarokperlmonkey: don't use pulseaudio then, it works well without here12:25
perlmonkeyright12:25
Mamarokperlmonkey: so you don't use Kubuntu, but Xubuntu? Maybe ask in their channel then could help?12:25
Mamarokasking*12:25
perlmonkeyI'm now using Kubuntu since moving to 10.04 as xfce4 wasn't working very well12:26
perlmonkeyalso the performance on Kubuntu seems to be equal to xfce4, previously it was slow12:26
perlmonkeyI upgraded my system to 4gb from 1gb and switched to dual core cpu12:27
TorchMamarok: akonadi is mandator for kaddressbook.12:30
MamarokTorch: not yet, you can use a local one AFAIK12:32
perlmonkeyI hate this12:33
well_laid_lawnTorch is a kde dev apparently Mamarok12:34
Mamarokperlmonkey: check your system is up-to-date and if the kde-full package drags in more packages12:34
perlmonkeychecking...12:34
Mamarokwell_laid_lawn: I am well involved in KDE, too, don't worry12:35
well_laid_lawnhe should know12:35
well_laid_lawnk12:35
perlmonkeyseems to be up to date and all ok12:35
perlmonkeyif I try and remove the akonadi crap, it wants to take my kmail too :-/12:36
perlmonkeyeven though I installed kaddressbook12:36
Mamarokperlmonkey: was this a fresh install or did you keep your /home?12:36
Torchperlmonkey: yes. you cannot remove akonadi, like i said.12:36
perlmonkeyI kept my /home, I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.0412:36
perlmonkeyTorch Mamarok says you can use kmail without it12:37
Mamarokperlmonkey: maybe moving your $HOME/.kde/ could help solving some of the problems, you have all the old config data still in there12:37
perlmonkeyok12:37
perlmonkeyI want to kill akonadi12:37
MamarokTorch: check aptitude show kmail, it doesn't drag in Akonadi, nor does it depend on it12:38
Mamarokperlmonkey: did you try the troubleshooting guide? Usually apparmor is the problem, it runs fine here12:38
perlmonkeyI have moved .kde to .kde-bak12:39
perlmonkeyno error from akonadi so far12:39
* Torch goes back to programming crap.12:40
perlmonkeyI have no control over my workspaces12:40
wizkoderhy everybody12:41
wizkoderIs it possible to create a live cd out of the packages I have on my system?12:41
perlmonkeyI lost all my emails :-/12:42
Mamarokperlmonkey: no, you didn't, all is still in .kde-bak, you can copy back selectively all the things located in .kde-back/share/apps/12:43
perlmonkeyah12:43
Mamarokcopy back to $HOME/.kde/share/apps/12:43
well_laid_lawnTorch: don't be disheartened - one users issues doesn't ruin a great desktop environment - work on the networkmanager tho pls12:43
perlmonkeyTorch now feels unappreciated from the ungrateful runts like me who only complain at their selfless unpaid labour12:44
* Torch just doesn't want to get into a pissing contest, that's all.12:44
well_laid_lawnit's a rare thing to get praise - no news is good news but the variety of users and uses for the os make that so rare12:45
perlmonkeyI probably would too. but when your system is borked and you lose so much time fixing things which should just work, ones patience disappears12:46
well_laid_lawnit's all good here :] thnx12:47
perlmonkeywe get many benefits (not least a free flexible OS)12:47
Mamarokperlmonkey: well, you used old config files in your old $HOME/.kde/, that could well be the problem12:47
perlmonkeyMamarok but surely an upgrade should be able to cope with that?12:48
perlmonkeywhy doesn't the upgrade perform some checks, if there's a problem or number of problems, it could do the .kde solution and then allow data to be transferred back12:48
perlmonkeyit seems like the developers haven't thought things through12:48
Mamarokperlmonkey: well, existing config files are not necessarily overwritten, so moving the existing ones can show up where the problems lie12:49
perlmonkeyI noticed during the upgrade install phase it asked to keep or replace config files a few times12:49
perlmonkeyI suspect that is what you're saying, that's what causes problems12:49
Mamarokperlmonkey: that's not necessarily overwriting, depends on the app12:49
perlmonkeyyes12:49
perlmonkeybut does this mean the apps are not backwards compatible with old configs?12:50
perlmonkeyusing an older config on upgraded apps cause them to break?12:50
Mamarokperlmonkey: it didn't "break", don't exagerate, it just didn't work as you expected it12:50
perlmonkeythis again suggests a lack of foresight on the developers, they didn't test properly12:50
perlmonkeywell12:51
Mamarokperlmonkey: file a bugf12:51
Mamarok-f12:51
perlmonkeysome things are clearly broken now after upgrading12:51
Mamarokperlmonkey: again, please file a bug12:51
perlmonkeybut if I file a bug when it's a problem of config being too old for the upgraded software is that really a bug? or a user error, or bad planning by developers?12:52
Mamarokthat's the only way to reach developers, and stop bashing, constructive suggestions is the way to go12:52
perlmonkeyI don't think these are bugs tho12:52
perlmonkeyI think the upgrade method is flawed12:52
Mamarokperlmonkey: I always move my old -kde/ when installing a new version, so I am sure not to run into problems, I only copy back the data I need12:53
well_laid_lawnthere's been a few instances where the upgrade didn't fully "upgrade" - sudo apt-gat update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade   pulled in missing stuff12:53
Mamarokperlmonkey: still, file a bug, you are bashing about things with wild guesses, if you want to talk to the devs, file a bug12:53
perlmonkeyMamarok that sounds wise, but does it take a lot of time and hassle to figure out a) what data you need b) transferring it all back?12:53
BluesKajhowdy all , dhclient isn't auto connecting like before ...not using network manager , /etc/network/interfaces settings was working fine until yesterday , gotta run sudo dhclient eth0 to connect after boot up. Any idea why this is happening ?12:53
Mamarokif the upgrade method is flawed, that's a bug in the update then12:53
perlmonkeysure12:53
Mamarokperlmonkey: not at all, I know what apps I use and what data I need12:54
perlmonkeyMamarok something along the lines you have done seems a more sensible upgrade method, to build that option in as a "fail safe upgrade"12:54
perlmonkeyand at least to warn people if they do simply use old configs it may not work as expected12:55
Mamarokperlmonkey: you did keep your /home, hence you did keep your old data and config, it doesn't change existing configs necessarily, it's pointless arguing where/who/when the failure lies, file a bug12:55
perlmonkeyI think there's too many apps and too much complexity over the dependencies sometimes.. I would like to install just the apps I need by compiling one by one.. but maybe that would take too long12:56
roxy81hi i want to dowload someting with kmldonkey, but i cannot get it working, i know that i need to manual load somthing, buy i do not know the name...  anyone of you have an idea?12:56
Mamarokperlmonkey: you did a fresh install keeping your /home, that is not an upgrade, you are responsible of what lies in your /home12:56
perlmonkeyMamarok my setup is a bit unusual because I have a server where I mount /home/user over nfs, so when I upgrade I mount that home folder12:57
perlmonkeymaybe that caused it?12:57
perlmonkeyI'm stuck12:58
Mamarokyes, as I said, you didn't do an upgrade, you did a fresh install, keeping your /home, so there is nothing going to change your existing config files12:58
Mamarokperlmonkey: don't expect miracles on an unusual setting, you need to sort out your system then12:59
roxy81nevermind, got it... it was mlnet12:59
perlmonkeyMamarok that doesn't make sense. A fresh install surely means creating a new home and new config files, as opposed to using the same home and keeping old configs?12:59
Mamarokperlmonkey: not at all, I do fresh installs keeping my /home partition12:59
Mamarokand I move the old $HOME/.kde/ out of the way, then copy back the data I need13:00
perlmonkeyI thought the idea of an upgrade was to install right ontop of your existing config and keep the old config/data13:00
perlmonkeyso the software is newer but the data and config stays the same13:00
Mamarokthat is something I have to do myself, as it is clearly not part of the install process, I choose to keep my /home13:00
perlmonkeyMamarok what you did then was a fresh install really eh, not an upgrade13:00
perlmonkeythat suggests that upgrading doesn't work13:00
Mamarokyes, and that's why I move the old settings out of the way, only to keep what I want. Why do I have to repeat that 3 times?13:01
Mamarokperlmonkey: you did a fresh install as well apparently13:01
Mamarokkeeping your old /home13:01
perlmonkeyMamarok so why do you need to do that? why can't the software upgrade properly and retain the old config and settings/data13:01
perlmonkeywithout any user intervention or work13:01
perlmonkeyMamarok no I upgraded.13:02
Mamarokperlmonkey: I don't want to upgrade, I prefer a clean isntall and don't want to backup 50 Gb of date out of my /home13:02
perlmonkeyok13:02
Mamarokonly to copy it back, henc I use a separate partition, and only move the old .kde/ and copy back the essential things liek mail and so13:03
perlmonkeyhow long did it take you in total to move back all the data and stuff, and did it go smoothly?13:03
Mamaroka few minutes13:03
perlmonkeyok13:04
perlmonkeythat sounds reasonable13:04
Mamarokand of course it did go smoothly, just don't start the apps before doing so13:04
perlmonkeyI wish I had known how to do that13:04
perlmonkeynow my system is screwed13:04
prowerhello :> occasionally when opening konsole it takes almost a minute for it to start, and when it does, i get the following message when it finally pops up: Warning: Could not start program '/bin/bash' with arguments '/bin/bash'13:04
Mamarokperlmonkey: I don't think it is screwed, didn't you move your old .kde/ now?13:05
perlmonkeyif I just move .kde now, will it automatically create a new one and all new configs?13:05
perlmonkeyyes13:05
Mamarokperlmonkey: if you do it now, you would move the new one13:05
perlmonkeyright13:05
Mamaroktry not overwriting your old data13:05
perlmonkeyso now I have to not start any kde apps13:05
perlmonkeyand must copy the data back from the bak13:06
Mamarokand yes, on startup KDE checks for config files, if there is no $HOME/.ke/ it creates it and writes new data13:06
well_laid_lawnprower: does   sudo apt-get install bash   do anything?13:06
Mamarok.kde*13:06
perlmonkeyright that's a good feature13:06
prowerwell_laid_lawn: Just confirms that it's installed and up to date13:06
well_laid_lawnprower: in konsole do   which bash13:07
Mamarokperlmonkey: so don't move back the stuff in the old .kde/share/config/ parts, or edit the config files selectively, only copy back data you need, like the mail13:07
prowerwell_laid_lawn: No problem -- /bin/bash13:07
perlmonkeybut how will i know which files are for what, which to copy and which not to copy?13:07
perlmonkeythis requires some knowledge and experience?13:08
well_laid_lawnprower: do you have a script handy that runs bash to check it -if it runs then the prob is with konsole?13:08
perlmonkeyof the apps and their data file naming conventions presumeably13:08
perlmonkeyi'm going to try kmail now13:09
prowerwell_laid_lawn: I can make one quickly, just something with #!bin/bash near the top I assume ;>13:09
well_laid_lawnprower: sure - just ls home or something13:09
prowerwell_laid_lawn: Ahh, got it...yeah the script seems to run just fine, no errors or delays13:10
well_laid_lawnprower: then it is konsole with the issue - any config in home for it?13:10
prowerwell_laid_lawn: Well I guess there's the konsolerc under .kde, unless there's another one?13:11
perlmonkeyI have lost all my emails.13:12
perlmonkeygrrrr13:12
well_laid_lawnprower: try moving that to konsolerc.bak and closing / starting konsole pls13:12
prowerwell_laid_lawn: Hmm, well it started as per usual when I did that, but that might not mean that it's fixed -- the problem is intermittent, which makes it pretty hard to pin down :> If I move the file back and open/close konsole it works as well13:13
well_laid_lawnprower: in my experience software performs pretty consistently - h/ware missues are intermitent13:16
well_laid_lawns/missues/issues13:16
Mamarokperlmonkey: did you go into that folder: .kde-bak/share/apps/kmial/13:17
prowerwell_laid_lawn: Well that's a possibility I suppose, but considering that the same machine has run Fedora 12, 13 and every release of Ubuntu since 8.04 without issues, I'd tend to think it was something introduced into 10.04 :> There was a thread on a KDE forum about it, maybe I can find that on google again13:17
Mamarokthere should be a mail folder13:17
Mamarokcopy that back13:17
perlmonkeyMamarok yes13:18
Mamarokhow difficult is that to look at the folder?13:18
perlmonkeyMamarok that's loads of folders, I need to copy the entire tree right?13:18
well_laid_lawnprower: if it is not just you then of course there may be a software issue :]13:18
Mamarokperlmonkey: which tree are you talking about?13:18
perlmonkey.kde-bak -> share -> apps -> kmail13:19
perlmonkeyall the branches of kmail13:19
well_laid_lawnprower: I just don't know how to debug that sort of prob in konsole...13:19
Mamarokperlmonkey: yes, if you have many mails of course that will take some time13:19
perlmonkeyI have 100GB of data just in incoming folder alone13:19
prowerwell_laid_lawn, http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=47601&start=20 (that's where i first found out i wasn't alone ;>)13:20
perlmonkeyit sucks13:20
prowerwell_laid_lawn, oh that's fine, i appreciate the help either way...i've just been having a number of weird little problems with 10.04, it's unfortunate as it's the first version i've used where pulseaudio apparently works without problems13:20
Mamarokperlmonkey: are you sure you need all this? that sounds like mails form 10 years, you will certainly not going through that anymore13:21
perlmonkeysorry I meant 100MB13:21
well_laid_lawnprower: from that post there are multiple konsoles spawned - what does   ps aux | grep konsole return13:22
perlmonkeyprower does your workspaces manager work ok?13:22
Mamarokperlmonkey: that takes a few minutes only13:22
well_laid_lawnmore than two lines?13:22
perlmonkeyMamarok I'm trying to be patient and do it, just copying each folder in Thunar13:22
prowerperlmonkey: The desktop pager you mean? yes, it seems to13:22
Mamarokperlmonkey: why don't you do this in a konsole? I can tell you the instructions13:22
perlmonkeyprower yes, mine doesn't work..also Thunar doesn't work, randomly doesn't allow you to open folders or click/move files13:23
Mamarokperlmonkey: and the default file manager in KDE is Dolphin, not Thunar13:23
prowerwell_laid_lawn: it shows that there are two instances running, one belonging to kdeinit and the other belonging to myself (which i still have open :>)13:23
perlmonkeyprower I had the problem with pulseaudio for a while, I think it's still here in 10.0413:23
perlmonkeysheesh where is Dolphin13:23
well_laid_lawnprower: why is that one from kdeinit there?13:24
perlmonkeyI'm installing Dolphin13:24
Mamarokperlmonkey: check the main menu, it's right there in the favorites, but you would have this easier with a konsole13:24
Mamarokperlmonkey: if you have KDE isntalled, you already have it13:24
perlmonkeyMamarok it wasn't there :-/13:24
prowerwell_laid_lawn, Good question? :> I'm guessing you're not seeing that on your system, here's the full line: prower    3538  0.0  0.8 406916 32576 ?        Sl   09:42   0:00 kdeinit4: konsole [kdeinit]13:25
Mamarokperlmonkey: as I said, if you really have Kubuntu as your distribution, Dolphin is in the menu, in the favorites, it reads file manager right below13:25
perlmonkeyI think I'm confused13:25
well_laid_lawnprower: I would kill it then log out and back in choosing a new kubuntu session13:26
Mamarokperlmonkey: if you don't have Dolphin in a default Kubuntu installation, then you really have a screwed system with half of the apps missing13:26
perlmonkeyKubuntu is a separate distro? I thought you just meant Ubuntu (lucid) with KDE installed..13:26
Mamarokperlmonkey: you said you installed Kubuntu, didn't you?13:26
Mamarokperlmonkey: *sigh*13:26
perlmonkeyI installed Ubuntu 8.04 originally13:26
Mamarokperlmonkey: which is Gnome13:26
perlmonkeyyes13:26
=== jtechidna is now known as JontheEchidna
perlmonkeyso I'm actually using Gnome?13:27
Mamarokperlmonkey: that's why you have pulseaudio installed, Gnome uses it13:27
perlmonkeysheesh13:27
perlmonkey:-/ now I feel dumb13:27
prowerwell_laid_lawn, Hmm...I'll have to give that a try then, if that works then I guess I'll have to figure out where it came from :>13:27
Mamarokperlmonkey: please install the kubuntu-desktop package, and install also kde-apps13:27
perlmonkeyok13:27
Mamarokthen make sure you choose the KDE session on login13:27
Mamarokperlmonkey: the last part of the sentence should be kde-full, not kde-apps13:28
perlmonkeyI got some of my e-mails back13:29
perlmonkeyright13:29
perlmonkeyThunar is now hanging/stuck for a long time on the last file for incoming mail files13:29
perlmonkey"1 second remaining" been like that for 6 minutes13:29
Mamarokperlmonkey: patience? Or don't use Thunar?13:31
perlmonkeyI think it's broke but I will wait longer13:31
Mamarokperlmonkey: if you are running Xfce you use Thunar, in KDE you should use Dolphin, but since you don't seem to know what Desktop you run...13:32
perlmonkeyI am running Gnome13:33
perlmonkeyI think13:33
perlmonkeySystem says About Gnome on menu, so it must be13:33
Mamarokperlmonkey: well, make your mind up first what desktop you want to run, then13:33
perlmonkeyI want to run the fastest and most stable that uses the least memory?13:34
perlmonkeyI need to do video editing mostly13:34
Mamarokthere are 3 different Desktop distributions, Ubuntu with Gnome, Kubuntu with KDE and Xubuntu with Xfce13:34
perlmonkeywhich is best?13:34
bazhang!best > perlmonkey13:34
Mamarokwell, that is a question I can't answer, since I only use KDE13:34
ubottuperlmonkey, please see my private message13:34
ukyoiEach have their advantages.13:35
Mamarokperlmonkey: video editing in KDE would be kdenlive13:35
perlmonkeydo you think KDE uses the most memory and system resources of all three?13:35
Mamarokperlmonkey: no13:35
perlmonkeyI have kdenlive but its buggy as hell, it crashes every few minutes..that is why I upgraded to 10.0413:35
ukyoiKDE4 use more than Gnome2.313:35
Mamarokand didn't you say you had 4 Gb of RAM? then why bother? that's plenty for all of them13:36
Mamarokukyoi: not true13:36
Buckyhi. how do i disable login/logout sounds? can't find the option13:36
perlmonkeyit was more stable in 10.04 but still plenty buggy and prone to crashing, so I ended up moving to openshot instead13:36
Mamarokbut could we please not start a discussion about this? remember, this is a support channel, discussions go to #kubuntu-offtopic13:36
perlmonkeyMamarok yes I installed 4gb of ram to do video editing13:36
perlmonkeyshould I add more?13:36
ukyoiI support Mamarok13:36
Mamarokperlmonkey: no, video editing needs a fast CPU13:37
Mamaroknot just RAM13:37
perlmonkeyI have an AMD Athlon X2 which is 2.8Ghz I think13:37
perlmonkeyit's sufficient?13:37
Mamarokthat should be fast enough13:37
perlmonkeyhow can I check the speed to be sure?13:37
perlmonkeycat /proc/cpuinfo?13:38
Mamarokperlmonkey: have you really done video editing already? the you should know, no?13:38
perlmonkeyconfirmed.. 2810.413Mhz13:38
Mamarokthen*13:38
perlmonkeyI haven't been able to do any yet except slicing videos up that's all13:39
Mamarokperlmonkey: well, run KDE as the desktop, install kdenlive and try it out, only way to know13:39
perlmonkeyas I couldn't find an app that was stable or flexible to do what I wanted to do13:39
perlmonkeyuntil I found Openshot yesterday13:39
Mamarokwhich is a Gnome app IIRC13:39
perlmonkeyok13:39
Mamarokbut kdenlive is state of the art AFAIK13:40
perlmonkeyopenshot seems a lot better than kdenlive13:40
perlmonkeythey are quite similar13:40
perlmonkeybut openshot seems a lot more stable13:40
Mamarokperlmonkey: how can you even know if you didn't try? Don't talk stuff you heard from other uninformed people, please13:40
perlmonkeywell from my experience of using both13:41
Mamarokperlmonkey: you didn't try, kdenlive is very stable, where did you get that from?13:41
Mamarokyou just pretended not to know it earlier13:41
perlmonkeyI've tried kdenlive in 9.10 and 10.0413:41
perlmonkeyand openshot in 10.0413:41
MamarokI really don't see why I waste my time on that, seriously13:41
Mamarokperlmonkey: either you have real support questions, and stick to a desktop and ask the questions in the appropriate channels, or we are done13:42
Buckyhi. how do i disable login/logout sounds? can't find the option13:42
perlmonkeyMamarok in 9.10 kdenlive wouldn't even run for like more than 2 minutes without crashing, just dragging a clip or adding a title would make it crash, and open up bug report thing13:42
Mamarokso far I only see very contradictory statements13:42
perlmonkeysomeone told me in #kdenlive that version from 9.10 was just not userable and to move to 10.0413:42
Mamarokperlmonkey: on a system where you pretend you run Kubuntu and not even have Dolphin installed? Seriously...13:42
Mamarokonly to find out that you are running Gnome13:43
Mamaroksorry, I out of this, too weird13:43
MamarokI have better things to do13:43
* Mamarok goes to do something else13:43
perlmonkeyI upgraded to 10.04 and tried out kdenlive in Gnome this time (previously I ran it in 9.10 in xfce4) I found it much more stable, but still not 100%...it crashed a few times again on simple tasks..so I decided to look at openshot13:43
Mamarokperlmonkey: please stick to support questions, this is not support, so take it to #kubuntu-offtopic13:44
perlmonkeyopenshot has only crashed once and I've been using it for several hours since yesterday, but have not made any videos yet, so testing out and learning how to edit still13:44
ukyoikdelive is OK on my PC..13:45
perlmonkeyukyoi what do you run13:45
Mamarokperlmonkey: I repeat, this is a support channel, please ask only support related questions, else take it to -offtopic13:45
perlmonkeyI need support with kdenlive13:45
perlmonkeywhy does it crash on simple tasks when I have loads of memory and a powerful CPU?13:45
ukyoiperlmonkey: I'm not a professor.13:45
Mamarokperlmonkey: ask in #kdenlive then, but first make your mind up abut the desktop you want to run13:45
perlmonkeyok13:46
ukyoiperlmonkey: Maybe it is caused by other Programm13:46
Mamarokyou have a flawed KDE installation, likely missing important packages, first fix ypour system and install the desktop correctly13:46
perlmonkeyI will do it13:46
Mamarokit runs fine here, no crashes I can see so far13:46
perlmonkeymy system must be the problem then13:47
ukyoiI think "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" will help a lot.13:47
Mamarokmost likely13:47
perlmonkeyI probably didn't even need to upgrade in the first place, maybe I got bad info13:47
perlmonkeyI didn't know you had to run KDE13:47
Mamarokukyoi: well, gues what I told him earlier...13:47
perlmonkeyI thought kde apps could run on any desktop13:47
Mamarokperlmonkey: if you have all the libs installed for, yes13:47
