Laneydidrocks: could the failure to run be gtk-csd?14:16
Laneydidrocks: yes, seems so14:18
Laneybug 58516014:18
ubot2Launchpad bug 585160 in banshee (Ubuntu) (and 1 other project) "Banshee crashes with RGBA enabled (affects: 6) (heat: 32)" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/58516014:18
=== fta_ is now known as fta
edlikI need some expert advise. I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10, x wont load and shuts down my monitor. Ctrl+Alt+F1,2,3,4,5,6,8 produce a command line, and F7 shuts monitor down again. At command line "startx" produces fatal server error. I have googled and tried all of the suggested fixes to no avail. For a time I was able to enter into safe mode, but now even that is not an option. I would really like to rescue the upgrade if possible because I ha18:55
ccheneyedlik, what kind of video card do you have?19:53
edlikIntel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated19:53
edlikGraphics Controller19:53
ccheneyhmm, looking around a bit19:54
ccheneythere are some known issues with intel 8xx but not 915 apparently19:56
ccheneyhave you updated your 10.04 to the latest updates/security fixes?19:56
edlikI just did that in recovery mode, rebooted, and still no gui19:58
ccheneyso you are using 22.36 kernel then currently?19:58
ccheneyi also see reference to i915.modeset=0 in the release notes at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes  that might help you if your system is having problems with kernel mode settings for video setup19:59
ccheneythe i915 in that case i believe really refers to all newer intel video chipsets it just started with the i915 model20:00
ccheneyif you do set that in your grub and then run update-grub (i think) and then reboot it will disable KMS as far as I know and that might make it work better for you20:01
ccheneyif that doesn't help there may be one other option before talking to the X maintainer directly20:01
ccheneyalso did X work for you when booted off the live cd?20:02
edlikno x from live cd20:03
ccheneyok20:03
ccheneyhttps://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa <- this page has some info on how to run the live disk with updated test packages to see if they help20:04
ccheneyalso you can directly use those packages on your system but i would probably advise first doing the test live setup first to see how it goes20:04
ccheneyif none of that works file a bug report and/or talk to the x maintainer20:04
ccheneyi think there may be some documentation on the wiki on how to file a bug report properly for the case where X is not working and you can't use ubuntu-bug (at least i think it doesn't work without X)20:05
ccheneyubuntu-bug is recommended when usable as it attaches all the needed info to the bug report so it can be fixed without requesting additional information20:05
ccheneyedlik, if it worked in the prior version then i915.modeset=0 will probably fix it for you, but i don't know for certain20:10
ccheneyedlik, if that does fix it then talking to the x maintainer to find out if it is a kernel related issue or a xorg driver issue would be the next step i think20:10
edlikccheney: thanks for your help, I am editing grub right now20:11
ccheneyedlik, if it is a driver issue then the xorg-edgers page above may be useful to test to see if it is fixed in the driver, but if its kms that is broken it would need a kernel fix20:11
ccheneyedlik, i think there are newer kernels that you can try as well but i am not sure where they are located20:12
edliki915.modeset=0 change to the boot log still forced a safe mode boot with no gui. just command line. Still checking your other suggestions20:26
ccheneyedlik, ok20:27
ccheneyedlik, RAOF when around may have better pointers on what to try to fix the issue, he is the new X maintainer20:28
edlikis he on this channel?20:29
ccheneyedlik, yea but probably isn't at the keyboard20:30
ccheneyedlik, he's been idle for 9hr at the moment20:30
ccheneyedlik, and with it being a weekend may not be around too much20:30
ccheneyRAOF, got any pointers for edlik to try before having him report a bug about his setup?20:33
ccheneyedlik, when you did the i915.modeset=0 did it change the resolution of your text console?20:41
ccheneyedlik, before using it should have been high resolution text console, but with the option set it should be low resolution20:41
edlikno change at all20:41
ccheneyedlik, hmm20:41
ccheneyedlik, roughly how many lines of text can you see on the console?20:42
ccheneyedlik, if i remember correctly without kms it should be somewhere around 24 lines20:42
ccheneyedlik, with working kms it should be probably double that20:42
edlikmy console is about 1/9th the screen size and it appears as if the 24 lines of text would be accurate20:44
ccheneyso without x running your console is showing up as only a small section of your screen? I assume that means you are on a lcd and that it is on set to stretch?20:45
ccheneyer it is not set to stretch20:46
edlikold monitor, crt20:48
ccheneyedlik, ok i'm confused then as a crt monitor should take whatever input and make it full screen by default from what i recall20:50
ccheneybut it does sound like kms is not working20:50
ccheneyi think there is a way to report the bug by running something on your machine and then copying it over to a working machine but not sure exactly how that works20:51
ccheneybryceh, do you happen to know the process or wiki page link?20:52
edliknot yet20:59
ccheneysorry I don't happen to know what the next step would be in debugging21:00
ccheneyif you never get a high resolution text console then it sounds like kms is not working for you, which may be why you can't get X working as well21:00
ccheneyso it might actually be a kernel problem, but i'm not certain21:00
edlikI did find a newer kernel from kernel.org, 2.6.34 is the latest stable release. How would I download from command line?21:07
ccheneyyou probably wouldn't want to use the one directly from kernel.org21:08
ccheneybut there is a 2.6.35 kernel in maverick that might work21:08
ccheneyif you wanted to try the 2.6.34 kernel out you could try a daily-live cd image21:09
ccheneyhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/21:10
ccheneythat has the latest of everything from the new development release of Ubuntu21:10
ccheneyif the new maverick versions fix your problem then it probably should be fixed in the Lucid release since its an LTS21:11
brycehccheney, yeah this can be done using apport; I wrote up a procedure for it in the wiki.ubuntu.com/X debugging pages somewhere21:13
ccheneybryceh, ok21:14
ccheneyedlik, see the wiki page bryceh mentioned once you get to the point of filing a bug21:14
edlikok21:14
ccheneybryceh, you don't happen to know if kms is known broken for Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated  do you?21:15
brycehccheney, no, I'm not really keeping track of intel these days21:15
ccheneybryceh, ok21:15
brycehccheney, was understood to be working fine in lucid tho21:15
ccheneybryceh, ok, yea edlik tried to upgrade to lucid but it sounds like from what he is describing that kms is broken and that i915.modeset=0 doesn't help (not sure if you need a xorg.conf option as well though)21:16
ccheneybryceh, i'm having him try out the maverick daily live cd to see if it helps any, he said the lucid live cd also did not work for him, not just the upgrade on his system21:17
brycehyeah dunno, should work.21:17
brycehmaybe a fresh install would work better21:17
ccheneyedlik, oh yea another thing you may want to do is if your system has a bios update from manufacturer you may want to update it21:18
edlikI have never updated a bios before, I am looking at it right now but I have no idea how to update it. Any suggestions?21:21
brycehgoogle.  ;-)21:21
edlik:-[21:22
ccheneyedlik, what kind of machine is it, laptop, desktop, etc?21:23
edlikdesktop IBM thinkCentre21:24
ccheneyedlik, do you know the exact model number?21:24
ccheneylooks like there are about 40 different models of thinkCentre21:26
edlikmt-m 8171-3gu21:26
ccheneySo it is ThinkCentre S51 8171-3gu ?21:28
edlikI dont see S51 anywhere, but the rest is correct21:29
ccheneyok, it is most likely this bios then21:29
ccheneyhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-5582421:29
ccheneyto find it in the future go to www.lenovo.com -> support -> Download & Drivers -> Driver Matrices -> ThinkCentre -> (find machine type there)21:30
ccheneyto use that bios you will probably need to get the iso version unless you system is dual boot with windows and then burn the iso and update the bios with it21:30
ccheneybe careful not to turn off the machine while updating the bios as it probably warns you as well, if you do it will corrupt your bios21:31
ccheneyif your system has the original bios then this may fix the issue as it has several video related fixes21:32
ccheneyalso it might allow your system to properly sleep if you have had trouble with that in the past21:33
ccheneyedlik, once you have done that let me know if it helps any21:39
* ccheney will be near computer so should be able to hear the beep, cleaning my office21:40
edlikccheney: updated bios, still same issue with x, I tried an earlier version of the kernel from the grub list, still the same. I am not immediately forced into low graphics mode so here is my error msgs. "Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)    "no drivers available". Fatal server error: No screens available22:03
ccheneyhmm do you still have the problem with the lucid live cd?22:04
ccheneythe failed to load module nvidia sounds wrong unless you have integrated graphics and a nvidia card also22:05
edlikno other cards, just integrated.22:12
ccheneyedlik, ok well it sounds like it was trying to load a driver for an nvidia card, so there might be some sort of configuration issue on your installed system, trying the live cd might be a good idea22:17
edlikrebooting now22:19
ccheneyok22:19
edlikafter splash screen my monitor shut down.22:21
ccheneyinteresting22:22
ccheneyit didn't do that before did it?22:22
ccheneyif you try doing the ctrl-alt-f1, etc does it show the console?22:23
edliksame behavior, I can get console22:23
ccheneyis it high resolution console?22:26
ccheneyor same as before the bios update?22:26
edlikhigh res22:27
ccheneyok22:27
ccheneyso it seems that the bios did fix some of the issue then22:28
ccheneyyou might want to run the daily live cd from maverick and see if that fixes the Xorg problem not coming up22:28
Tm_Tthere's livecd now?22:28
ccheneythis current booted system is running off the lucid live cd right?22:28
ccheneyTm_T, yes22:28
Tm_Tjolly good22:28
ccheneyTm_T, we're already past alpha 1 :)22:28
edlikcorrect22:28
Tm_Tccheney: that doesn't mean anything (:22:29
ccheneyedlik, ok since the lucid live cd works for the console high resolution then that means the resolution is good its just xorg having problems, trying maverick might fix the problem in that case, but i'm not sure22:29
edlikmaveric is about half downloaded, will try as soon as possible22:30
ccheneyedlik, in either case you should file a bug report and note that your console is high resolution but you can't get xorg to come up even on lucid live cd, and if you do test maverick live cd note if it worked or not22:30
ccheneyedlik, on your installed system you might have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf that you don't need, if it is there you can look to see if it appears anything is useful in it and remove it if not, there may be a mention of the nvidia driver in there that you don't have a card for22:31
edlikhow do I do that from the console?22:31
ccheneyTm_T, well yea it appears we have working live cds now, i installed using one of them a couple days ago http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/22:31
ccheneyedlik, bryceh mentioned that there is a page under https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X  that should explain how to report bugs on systems that don't have working X, i don't know the details myself22:32
ccheneymaverick has the same intel video driver but a newer kernel and other bits so still might fix something22:38
=== pgraner-afk is now known as pgraner
RAOFedlik: Good morning - that error strongly suggests that you've got an /etc/X11/xorg.conf specifying the nvidia driver as your display driver.  If you don't have an nvidia card in the laptop, that's obviously not going to work :)23:39
