td123I know it's in the topic, but is xorg *still* broken?01:01
Sarvattonly if you have proprietary drivers installed01:02
Sarvattalso - nouveau has 3D support in maverick now in libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental01:03
* ajmitch will enjoy the magic smoke tonight then01:05
psusianyone else have suspend broken using the current maverick kernels?  display just doesn't power back on after resume... works when I switch to the daily mainline kernel build01:20
psusidamn it takes forever to build the kernel these days...01:29
IdleOneHTT-Bird: since you plan on installing the current kernel in maverick this would be a better place for support02:01
HTT-Birdright. :)02:01
IdleOneask and be patient :)02:01
HTT-Birdwill give it a shot.02:02
IdleOneoh take not that xorg in maverick is broken (works for me)02:02
=== TheImp is now known as TheInfinity
HTT-Birdalright: I have what basically amounts to a modified Ubuntu 9.04 system right now.  I need to install a >=2.6.34 kernel as an alternate kernel in order to be able to take readings from my hwmon chip.  I was figuring that the easiest way to go would be to use Maverick's kernel image; however, would installing a kernel that new alongside an older userland cause trouble?02:25
bjsnideryour graphics driver may run into a problem with mismatched api/abi with your xorg/mesa system, or may not even build02:28
HTT-Birdbjsnider: I am using the nVidia blob, so would that still be an issue?02:29
bjsnidercertainly02:29
bjsnideri doubt it would build at all02:29
HTT-Birdso I'd have to pull a newer version of the nvidia stuff I take it?02:29
bjsniderno02:29
HTT-Bird...or I could just limp along on nv lol02:29
HTT-Birdbjsnider: so...what should I do about the issue of gfx being a problem?02:30
bjsniderwhy don't you compile the driver you need into your current kernel instead?02:30
HTT-Birdbjsnider: because it is NOT AVAILABLE for a 2.6.28 kernel02:31
bjsnideri mean for lmsensors02:31
HTT-BirdI'd have to backport the blasted thing 6 kernel releases02:31
HTT-Birdso I'd take it that you'd rather I backported the driver? :p02:31
bjsniderwel, you can waste time complaining about it or you can get started...02:31
funkyHatI'm hobbling along on vesa at the moment ⢁( I just had a look at downgrading to lucid's version of xorg but that doesn't appear to be doable02:31
bjsnideryou have no other option really02:32
HTT-Birdbjsnider: alright, I have the commit for that driver up on git.kernel.org02:35
HTT-Birdbjsnider: does kernel-package automatically take care of Ubuntu-ifying the kernel it's building?02:38
bjsniderjust install the kernel-headers from the archive02:40
bjsnideryou could use dkms to install the driver02:41
HTT-Birdbjsnider: hrm.  how do I get from "git diff of kernel sources" to "something dkms can swallow"?02:42
bjsnidertake a look at how your nvidia driver is handled02:44
bjsniderhave a look at /usr/src02:45
bjsniderit should become clear02:45
bjsnideryou'll have to research the dkms commands though02:45
HTT-Birdbjsnider: I can see that dkms can swallow an ordinary patch....I assume it can swallow git diff's too?02:45
bjsnideryou mean you want to create the driver from a patch?02:46
bjsnideri dunno02:46
HTT-Birdbjsnider: yeah.  I have the driver in the form of a patch to the kernel source tree.02:47
bjsnideris it that small?02:47
HTT-Bird1 new file in Documentation/, 1 file for the driver, 2 build-harness patches, and a patch to MAINTAINERS02:48
HTT-Birdso yeah, it is kinda that small :)02:48
HTT-Birdhttp://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=patch;h=d58de038728221f780e11d50b32aa40d420c1150 <-- maybe this'd help? :)02:49
* HTT-Bird pings bjsnider 03:02
bjsniderwell, i don't know if a patch would work with dkms or if it needs the raw files. give it a try03:04
HTT-Birdbjsnider: it seems to want the raw files03:29
HTT-Birdbut that's not too hard to accomodate. :)03:29
bjsnideryou can, apparently install the newer kernel outright if you want. the blob should build with it03:30
HTT-Birdtrue, I doubt backporting the driver will be horribly hard though.03:33
DrHalanwhat is the title supposed to mean? shouldn't i upgrade even if dependencies are okay nowß06:36

funkyHatAnyone know how I can downgrade all of my X packages? ⢁D17:15
yofelmake sure you get the older versions from somewhere and use dpkg / aptitude / synaptic?17:17
yofelfunkyHat: then again, why do you want to downgrade them?17:17
funkyHatyofel: because the current ones are broken ⢁)17:18
yofelhm, haven't updated today yet, but right now it works fine here17:18
funkyHatThe "get older ones from somewhere" part is what I'm struggling with, they don't appear to be in the archive anymore17:18
funkyHatyofel: my card is an ati r80017:18
yofelno, either you have them in /var/cache/apt/archives or you need to fetch the lucid packages17:18
yofeloh17:19
yofelheh17:19
yofelvesa?17:19
funkyHatyes vesa works fine, if 1280x1024 is fine...17:19
funkyHatAnd only single headed17:19
funkyHatmm, I tried adding lucid's repos so they'd appear in aptitude, but it didn't seem to work, I guess I'll grab the packages and install them manually17:21
yofelthey should appear after refreshing the package cache17:22
yofelyou have to select the older version by hand of course17:22
funkyHatby pressing u (or aptitude update) you mean? I have done that a few times ⢁)17:22
yofelyeah, then go to the package you want, press enter, go to the bottom, select the version you want and press +17:23
yofelresolve the conflicts by downgrading all other packages and install them17:23
funkyHatYeah, I'm only seeing 1:7.5+6ubuntu1 and the same with ~xorgedgers317:24
yofelhm, I have lucid enabled here and I can see all versions fine17:25
funkyHatMaybe I got my sources.list wrong...17:25
yofelhm, aptitude shows this here (the middle one comes from debian)17:26
yofelp    1:7.5+5ubuntu117:26
yofelp    1:7.5+617:26
yofeli    1:7.5+6ubuntu117:26
