alvin-laptopHello09:46
alvin-laptopI have a couple questions about streamlining Xubuntu09:48
alvin-laptopHas anybody had any experience in this department?09:49
bazhangstreamlining? care to be a bit more clear?09:50
alvin-laptopSure09:50
alvin-laptopI want to reduce the boot up time and see I can't make the OS run faster09:51
alvin-laptopI've had a little bit of experience tweaking windows operating systems but haven't done much with linux based os09:52
bazhanghow much ram?09:52
alvin-laptop4 gig09:52
alvin-laptop64 bit system09:52
bazhang64bit?09:52
alvin-laptopyep09:52
bazhanguninstall the services you don't need?09:52
alvin-laptopI'm relatively new at this, what services would you recommend?09:53
alvin-laptopI have a laptop you see, so I want to get the most out of my operating system09:55
alvin-laptopAfter what a read about xfce and xubuntu I was expecting something much faster. I have a relatively new lap so hardware shouldn't be a restraint09:56
bazhangwell not that much faster than gnome, in actual fact10:00
bazhangif you want a truly streamlined Ubuntu/xubuntu/etc, you might consider doing the minimal install and building up from there10:01
drizzt_alvin-laptop, I would recommend some portable distribution, with KDE 3.5 or other minimalistic desktop10:01
bazhangthere are other DE/wm as well10:02
bazhanglxde/openbox for example10:02
alvin-laptopThanks10:05

jimcooncatwhat's the best release to install on a friends computer, where I'll only have remote access to it? That is, really stable.11:43
bazhanglts ?11:43
jimcooncatLucid is lts, correct?11:44
bazhangyep11:44
bazhangthree years desktop five years server11:44
bazhangwith some point releases over the years11:44
slow-motionhi11:45
jimcooncatGood. I remember an older lts release that it wasn't really stable until the .1 release11:45
jimcooncatmaybe it was dapper11:45
bazhang10.04.1 etc11:45
bazhangwell dapper :)11:45
bazhangthat was originally going to be 6.0411:46
jimcooncatgood. now I need to find a netboot.tgz, unless you know handy location right off.11:46
jimcooncator do I use the ubuntu one and install xubuntu-desktop?11:48
bazhangbooting via netboot? pxe from iso on grub2?11:49
bazhangerr pxe,11:49
bazhang!install11:49
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate11:49
bazhangthat may help11:49
jimcooncatI think I found it, doesn't seem to be specific to xubuntu though11:50
bazhangthe last link should probably be changed to include unetbootin boot from a flash drive11:51
bazhangright, it would not be11:51
bazhangthe various -desktop packages are the difference11:51
bazhangxubuntu kubuntu ubuntu lubuntu etc11:51
jimcooncatI got a pxe server already set up, just need to add the new ubuntu-installer. Think I'm all set11:52
bazhangok11:52
bazhanggood luck11:52
jimcooncatbazhang: xubuntu vs. lubuntu for a complete noob? He bought an old machine off a yard sale11:52
bazhangjimcooncat, fairly old / low ram slower cpu?11:53
jimcooncatYeah, looks like a five to seven year old machine, I don't know how much ram yet11:53
bazhangwell that would be a big determinant11:53
bazhangxubuntu is not that resource light11:54
jimcooncatlets say 256 mb11:54
bazhanglxde/openbox is much lighter, but for a newer user might be a bit tricky11:54
bazhangpossible but not very enjoyable11:55
jimcooncatI did like customizing xfce though. I'll give both a shot, what the heck11:55
bazhangnice :)11:55
jimcooncatdo these desktop packages coexist? I remember some awful stuff trying to run gnome and kde11:56
bazhangI think there's a bug with ubuntu- and xubuntu-11:56
bazhangnot seen it in lucid with kubuntu- and ubuntu- though11:56
jimcooncatoh well. That's the nice thing about the pxe server. I just wish I could learn to set up a transparent proxy instead of apt-cacher, as I need to remember to change the apt proxy once it's off my office lan11:58
bazhanggood luck :) I've got to run now11:58
jimcooncatthanks much bazhang see you in the funny pages11:58
bazhang:)11:59
Sysican i somehow set with xrandr which is the "main" screen?12:44
Sysimy panel keeps going to smaller screen12:44
Sysii have nvidia, should i switch to restricted driver?12:44
TheSheepxrandr won't work with nvidia, and yes, restricted driver is better with it12:48
Sysiotherly this works well12:54
Sysibut i want my panel to different window12:54
Sysigah, panel settings of course12:56
SysiTHIS is working GREAT12:57

vh4x0rI just did a xubuntu 10.04 install ...18:57
vh4x0rbut the default installation with no apps running takes up 240 MiB of RAM :-O18:58
vh4x0rAny tips on reducing it ?18:58
Sysisettings → sessions and startup and take off autostarted apps you don't need18:59
TheSheepyou could disable the services that you don't use, you could disable some autostarting apps18:59
vh4x0rSysi, hmm done that already :)18:59
vh4x0rdoesn't help much :(18:59
TheSheepset the background to solid color instead of an image18:59
TheSheepbut it all won't really help that much19:00
vh4x0rhmm19:00
vh4x0reven notify-osd takes up 12 MiB of RAM !!19:01
Sysiif you have really little ram, crunchbang or lubuntu might be better19:01
Sysixubuntu isn't for *very* low end19:01
vh4x0rSysi, THis computer has 640 MiB RAM but DDR !19:02
TheSheepdance dance revolution? :)19:02
vh4x0rTo disable startup daemons, I should delete the symlinks from rc*.d, right ?19:03
TheSheepno19:04
TheSheepuse the system->serives dialog19:04
vh4x0rI don't have much experience with debian's init system :(19:04
TheSheepservices19:04
vh4x0rTheSheep, there's no system->services dialog :(19:04
TheSheepoh, it has been removed?19:04
Sysiand maybe sysrw-conf if you know what you're doing19:04
vh4x0rSysi, no sysrw-conf either !19:05
Sysithat needs to be installed separately19:05
TheSheepor chkconfig19:05
TheSheepsame here19:05
Sysiname might be a bit wrong19:05
vh4x0rSysi, no nothing of that sort !19:05
TheSheepSysi: sysv-conf I guess19:05
Sysiprolly19:06
TheSheepSysi: because the init system comes from System V19:06
vh4x0rthe services utility should be in gnome-system-tools right ?19:06

N-S[X1]If I run smbclient -L on localhost it displays all shares, but on the ip it fails with an erro message:22:13
