[00:20] lontra: yes, it's not an incremental update [00:23] but why isn't pushed as a normal update? [00:27] lontra: so that prople dont have to upgrade as it 'could' break their system (or at least thats what I think) [01:47] hi, can anyone help me, i'm currently struggling with grep? [01:47] jcgs: ask your question, don't ask to ask ;-) [01:47] ok, i'm trying to match the letter i at the beginning of a line, how would i do that? [01:47] grep ^i [01:49] Torch: Cheers, why doesn't it say that in man grep? [01:49] jcgs: because the man page can't teach you regular expressions too [01:49] jcgs: i guess... [01:51] Torch: one more thing, i was trying to use grep [:space:]i[:space:] to match an i surrounded by whitespace, but that appeared to do the opposite, what's going on? [01:51] jcgs: grep only understands a very limited subset of regular expressions. [01:51] jcgs: it can do what you want, however, if you just use grep " i " (literally) [01:52] jcgs: it won't match anything else but the space char itself with this, of course. [01:52] jcgs: for anything more complicated use egrep or perl [01:52] Torch: ah, but [:space:] is specifically listed in man grep [01:52] jcgs: maybe ;-) [01:53] jcgs: i'm not a grep guru [01:54] Torch: I also tried grep -E which is the same as egrep. could this be a bug? [01:54] jcgs: very very unlikely [01:54] jcgs: stuff like grep is simple enough to just work [01:55] Torch: presumably more likely to be a mistake in the documentation [01:57] Torch: anyway thanks a lot :) [02:00] jcgs: it's [[:space:]] [02:00] jcgs: probably some escape-bug in the manpage [02:01] " i " should be fine === rootusr is now known as tutux === tutux is now known as tutuxg [02:03] Torch: it seems like [[:space:]] requires egrep to work, but doesn't match new lines [02:03] jcgs: regular expression syntax does not normally match a newline, it's a special case (at least in perl) [02:04] hey, would anybody be able to point me towards some screenshots of the stock theme for Kubuntu 10.04? [02:04] jcgs: as you already found out i'm not a 100% familiar with what grep and egrep do with it. [02:04] Demolitio: www.kde.org? [03:15] I really like the look of it, but I was wondering if I can use my hotmail account with it === thiago is now known as Guest20584 [03:22] Ezro: i haven't played with kontact, but i'd be willing to look at it w/ you. I don't have a hotmail account, but the settings are probably easily found... [03:22] Ya, it looks like a really cool program. [03:22] I setup my identity with my hotmail account [03:22] But it still says I need to make an acount [03:23] account* [03:23] Ezro: hotmail is saying that or kontact is saying that? [03:24] I actually found the account wizard. [03:24] Now I just need to figure out what hotmail is lol [03:25] Ezro: so are you talking about the 'Add' under Setup for Sending and Receiving Messages? [03:25] msn? [03:25] Ya. [03:27] Ezro- http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!44348.entry [03:27] That has the POP3 and SMTP settings you need [03:31] Ya, so I got my hotmail to work. [03:31] But now it 1) won't fetch all my files and 2) won't read html -_- [03:32] Ezro: kontact won't? (Actually it looks like its kmail) [03:33] Ya, it's kmail [03:34] Ezro: when you say 'fetch ... files' are you talking about kmail handling attachments? [03:34] No, I mean when I click check mail [03:34] It doesn't load all my emails [03:36] Ezro: do you notice any pattern to which ones it gets/doesn't get? Like is it missing nested folders or something? Or maybe maxes out at a certain number of e-mails on each fetch? [03:37] ./shrug [03:37] Not really. [03:37] I think it was just taking a while. I got my most recent email. [03:37] It won't get mail from my other folders though. [03:37] Like in hotmail I have a folder for school and it won't get the emails from there. [03:38] Ezro: is it getting more mail each time you fetch? [03:39] It stopped. [03:39] It only got emails from my inbox [03:43] Ezro: I don't know if this means anything, but i notice in the POP Setup it asks for 'destination folder' and only gives 'Inbox' as a choice. [03:45] Where is that? [03:45] The only thing I know for accounts is the account wizard lol [03:46] Ezro: yes, you called it the 'account wizard' [03:46] o.o [03:56] Ezro: i wonder if you go into kmail and give it some other folders that match what's on hotmail if that would get it working... [05:31] I'm using Kubuntu Netbook Remix, and every time I try hooking up to an unsecured network, knetworkmanager tries treating it as the last one I signed in to, and proceeds to do nothing. [06:38] hello [06:38] could someone help me out with installing IGS Pandanet go client for linux I am using kubuntu 10.04 [06:39] they have .rpm .deb and .tar.gz file with installer I tried all of them but when trying to start the program nothing happens [06:39] I dont know too much about linux [06:40] henkka-: i think i may have seen something to change .rpm to .deb today... let me check... [06:40] no i mean [06:40] they have 3 files [06:40] .deb and .rpm and a .tar.gz [06:40] so i tried each of them but [06:40] henkka-: oh, so the one you want is the .deb file [06:41] what is the link to the download? [06:41] http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/glgo/download.html [06:42] henkka-: i'll try it out and see if i can get it going... [06:42] ok thanks [06:42] i'll try installing the .deb one more time but i already did this once [06:43] do I need to remove the previous installations [06:43] since I think I tried to install the .rpm file first but didnt remove it before trying the .deb [06:43] ? [06:44] henkka-: i'm not sure, but i don't think so, good question. [06:45] btw when removing installations from kpackage manager [06:45] it resolves the dependencies and [06:45] last time I uninstalled something from there [06:45] it uninstalled the dependencies as well [06:45] which sort of resulted to that I had to reinstall linux [06:45] so now im trying to avoid uninstalling things [06:45] :D [06:46] henkka-: hmmm... usually using kpackage manager is by far safer than doing it manually because if you don't resolve dependencies you can end up in a pickle. What was it you uninstalled (while i wait for the download to finish)... [06:47] i dont remember [06:47] yeah I meant i used the program [06:47] kpackage kit [06:47] and it uninstalled the dependencies [06:47] but probably i did something wrong [06:47] anyway I reinstalled linux after that and now there's no problem [06:48] btw the download from the site is [06:48] it tends to pause [06:48] i dont know how it's with other browsers but with firefox I had to click the pause/continue download putton a couple of times to get the file [06:48] henkka-: it must have been something critical to the desktop or some inner workings of Kubuntu or something. Yes, you do have to be a little cautious when uninstalling, so i generally look at the list to make sure nothing important is going to be uninstalled. [06:48] I think it was a chess program [06:49] but it uninstalled the dependencies as well [06:49] like whatever was required for the chess program to function [06:49] but anyway that's not related to this Go client issue [06:50] just explaining why i dont uninstall things unnecessarily [06:50] :D [06:59] henkka-: first i downloaded w/ Konqueror but i'm not sure where it put it... [07:00] i think it should be at usr/games/glgo [07:00] henkka-: i'll check... [07:03] henkka-: so please tell me this. When you downloaded it did you use Konqueror and if so did you right click on it and if so which option did you pick? [07:03] i used firefox [07:04] and open with the default package handler for .deb files [07:04] henkka-: did you save it or use gdebi? [07:04] GDebi [07:04] okay... checking.... [07:12] henkka-: well this is funky... the first time when i tried to download it with konqueror i got the progress bar and all, but i'm not sure if it completed the download or where it put it. Now i'm trying it with firefox and it seems to stall indefinitely on the 'starting' to download, no progress... [07:12] newboon2age, hello [07:13] abhi_nav: hey... [07:13] newboon2age, you here too? [07:14] abhi_nav: awesome. [07:14] yah [07:14] http://panda-igs.joyjoy.net/English/glgo/downloads/ [07:14] henkka-: sure, i'll try that... [07:16] henkka-: hmm... gdebi objects to installing it because its for i386 and my machine is amd64... but let me try some things... [07:17] newboon2age, do you know shortcuts for min, max, restore in kde? [07:22] henkka-: wow, even dpkg stops me cold. won't let me install it. :/ [07:22] well that's ok [07:22] it's been quitea bit of trouble already [07:23] henkka-: i think i'd try deleting everything from their directory and reinstalling using gdebi if possible. I think since its .deb it should basically configure itself properly (at least in terms of which directories it puts itself in and all) [07:24] henkka-: and if its just a matter of it not showing up on the menus as you expected, well that can be fixed.. [07:24] yea but it's not starting at all [07:24] i dont even know how to delete the files [07:24] :D [07:24] ?? [07:25] nobody tell me that :( [07:25] henkka-: well if you use the file manager (Dolphin) you can navigate to the directory you mentioned [07:25] yea but [07:25] it doesnt allow deleting files there [07:25] i thought it's because it's in the root section [07:25] henkka-: ah, [07:25] instead of home [07:26] henkka-: okay let me check something... [07:26] youd need to run it as root then [07:26] kdesu dolphin [07:26] but you shouldnt uninstall by manually deleting files... [07:26] yea that workd [07:26] maco: thank you maco . how would you suggest.. [07:27] you uninstall software by uninstalling it :P [07:27] sudo apt-get remove [07:27] or use kpackagekit if you prefer [07:27] or ahhh i see, arch difference [07:27] if apt-get is unhappy, there's always "sudo dpkg -P " [07:27] to remove/purge a package [07:28] but anyway the program still wont start so [07:28] i dunno [07:29] if its compiled for a different architecture than you're running, thats no surprise [07:29] maco: well that was me, not henkka- [07:29] it wont be able to find the libraries it needs of the right architecure [07:29] oh [07:29] bahh im getting so confused [07:29] maco: sorry [07:29] :'( [07:30] im tryin to start IGS panda net Go client [07:30] for the game of go [07:30] their website has 3 downloads for linux [07:30] .rpm .deb and tar.gz which contains scripts or so it says [07:30] it tried each of teh 3 but [07:30] none of them worked [07:30] so I dont know [07:30] henkka-: when you say won't start, exactly what are you doing? [07:30] henkka-: Please don't flood, use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste, don't use Enter as punctuation. [07:30] henkka-: and what results do you get? [07:31] well i go to the executable file in the usr/games/glgo directory [07:31] and try to start it but notthing happens [07:31] henkka-: how do you try to start it? [07:31] i also tried pressing alt+f2 and typing glGo there but it returns no valid options beyond that and start menu i've no idea how it's supposed to do [07:31] i also tried with root dolphin [07:32] now that i figured such athing exists [07:32] or maco said [07:32] henkka-: when you say try to start it are you typing a command at the terminal or clicking on it in dolphin or.... [07:32] clicking on it in dolphin [07:33] henkka-: it may be that the permissions need to be set so its an executable. [07:33] it is set as an executable [07:33] by default i checked that [07:33] =D [07:33] henkka-: what is the file name? [07:33] glGo [07:33] henkka-: is there an extension? [07:34] no.. but it says type: executable and when you go to permissions it has the is executable box ticked [07:34] maco: any ideas? [07:34] in anycase even if it was possible for me to somehow manually start this program, I'm assuming that if it's any more complicated than this then [07:34] it's going wrong [07:35] for whoever made this probably didnt make it as difficult as possible [07:35] :D [07:35] is thre a README in the tarball? [07:35] henkka-: well there could be something we're not thinking of... i'll check the web site... hang on... [07:35] i'd start there [07:35] no there isnt [07:35] there's some instructions on the website which i read somewhat [07:36] http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/glgo/download.html [07:37] henkka-: check http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/glgo/Install.txt [07:37] yea i read that [07:37] doesnt mean i got much out of it :D [07:37] henkka-: it says (among other things) '' If you use the Gnome desktop, you already have all of these libraries. [07:38] well am i using ? I dont know :D [07:38] i jsut assumed that since it said most distributions have teh things [07:38] henkka-: you don't have the gnome desktop, so probably several of those libraries you'll need to install [07:40] henkka-: i think you'll need to go down the list of libraries and using Kpackage kit, match each one and install it if you don't have it already. [07:40] oh [07:41] henkka-: see kubuntu uses KDE libraries instead of the gnome libraries. [07:41] henkka-: whereas Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop. [07:42] henkka-: so parts of teh Gnome desktop, Kubuntu won't have at least not by default. [07:42] henkka-: doesn't mean you can't add them... [07:43] henkka-: the nice thing is they provided a list which you can just work your way through. [07:44] yeah [07:44] i'll do that but now im kind of tired after all this s [07:44] so I think i'll do that later then [07:44] henkka-: interesting they also say it can use the GNU go program, which might be much easier to install... [07:45] henkka-: if you wait just a minute, let me check that real quick... [07:46] henkka-: well that is right there in Kpackagekit. Just search for gnugo and its an easy install... [07:46] ok [07:48] henkka-: the only thing i see in install to add is "Make sure the gnugo binary is found in your PATH environment, so glGo will find it. Common locations are /usr/local/bin, /usr/bin or /usr/games/bin. [07:49] maco: can you help with adding that to the PATH? [07:49] just add to ~/.bashrc: [07:49] export PATH=/whatever/path/you/want:$PATH [07:50] but if its packaged i expect gnugo to be in /usr/bin/ anyway [07:50] and thats part of the default $PATH [07:50] maco: and does that mean adding it to the PATH wouldn't be necessary? [07:51] maco: gotcha [07:51] right [07:52] henkka-: so i just had kpackagekit install GNU Go on my machine. According to the install instructions the web site should be able to find your GNU Go. [07:52] henkka-: once you've installed it that is... [07:52] kk [07:53] but how do i start [07:53] I mean [07:54] i dont knwo [07:54] henkka-: good question. I went over to their web site. You probably know a little more about it than i [07:54] not really :D [07:55] but [07:55] how do i start gnugo [07:55] on it's own [07:55] ? [07:56] henkka-: i just started it from the command line typing gnugo. I don't know if it has a gui or not... [07:57] but it didnt start [07:57] :D [07:57] im gonna smoke brb [07:57] henkka-: started for moi [08:01] henkka-: if you tried to start it w/ alt+F2 that probably wouldn't work. you'd need to go to a terminal window. I'm checking to see if there's a gui for it. [08:02] yea it started from terminal [08:02] there's a grid that represents the board [08:03] apparently yo can play against computer by default there :D [08:05] =D [08:05] it plays very well too :) [08:07] henkka-: i see several things that talk about GUIs for GNU go, one called gnomego. I'd guess at least one of them is available in the repositories. I'm out of time now, but I think this is a very doable thing... if you ask around you can probably get it going... [08:07] yeah... thanks for your help [08:07] henkka-: sure enough... have a kUbuntu day! [08:08] =D [08:08] hehe to be honest im not very fond of linux after using it [08:14] yey i managed to win :D [08:38] heenka! [08:38] digging that enthusiasm! [23:07] Hello everyone. I'm running Lucid and I can't seem to get sound recording going. When I plug my headset in I can speak and the sound comes through my speakers. [23:08] My problem is that no recording program (e.g. Audacity) picks it up. [23:08] I've tried fiddling with the settings (choosing one input, then choosing another input), and have tried messing with the microphone settings in Kmix (choosing mic2 instead of mic1) but to no avail.
