DewgongHey, I can't get my sound working on a fresh install. It looks like the system recognized my sound card and the driver (snd-hda-intel) is installed. I did have to add my username to audio in /etc/group, but after restarting, still no luck. alsamixer levels are all unmuted and 100%. Any ideas?01:33
new2ubuntuHello, all.01:41
new2ubuntuI have just installed ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on an external hp hard drive (320g)01:41
new2ubuntuUbuntu boots just fine right alongside windows 701:41
new2ubuntuBut I cannot connect to the Internet.  I know my wireless router is set up just fine, but ubuntu cannot connect to it01:41
phillwhi Dewgong as sound issues are not too easy to track, I'd suggest heading over to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 that has things to check & is a live thread for you to ask on.01:41
new2ubuntuCan anyone help me?01:41
new2ubuntuAnypne?01:44

pedro3005leaving the cable on01:55
new2ubuntuI'll try that01:55
_CommandeR_Guys & Girls, I am getting soon an SSD and wondering do i need to tweak Ubuntu to make the drive last longer or to have a better performance etc. ?01:55

new2ubuntuwhat do you mean the lan got killed?02:08
holsteinyou could test this by botting into windows right now though02:08
new2ubuntuyou couldnt connect with an ethernet table?02:08

pedro3005yeah02:11
new2ubuntuso what you're saying is that it SHOULD be working02:12
new2ubuntuBut it's not02:12

new2ubuntuOR02:12
new2ubuntushould i uninstall the wuby and install from the cd to my external, w/o wubi?02:13

holsteinthat was a long time ago :)02:15
new2ubuntuubuntu is uninstalled (gotta love the speed of ubuntu02:16
new2ubuntuso now i boot from the cd?02:16
holsteinnew2ubuntu: i would boot from CD02:17
holsteinand troubleshoot a bit02:17
holsteinfrom the live CD02:17
holsteinrun that command that pedro3005 mentioned02:17
holsteinlspci02:18
holsteinsee what devices are listed02:18
holsteintry and get the wired internet working02:18
holsteinat least02:18
holsteinthen wireless02:18
new2ubuntuok, thanks, you guys02:18
new2ubuntuinstalling from the cd will probably take 6 years : )02:18
holsteinthen, you can do more research if needed02:18
new2ubuntui'll let you know if i have any more trouble02:18
holsteinbefore installing02:19
holsteinnah02:19
holsteinits pretty fast02:19
new2ubuntuive installed ubuntu only once before on a real wheezer of a machine, and it literally took a VERY LONG TIME02:19
new2ubuntuAnyway02:19
new2ubuntuthanks again02:19
holsteingood luck :)02:20
new2ubuntuOkay, so im on step 4, Prepare Disk Space02:21
holsteinDUDE02:21
new2ubuntuhow to i tell it to install to my external?02:21
holsteintry it live first02:21
holsteini say02:22
holsteinand test your devices02:22
new2ubuntuokay, okay, trying : )02:22
holsteinthats just my professional opinion02:22
holstein;)02:22
new2ubuntuyeah, i know02:22
new2ubuntuas a n00b, i cant argue02:22
holsteinif you install to an exteral drive02:22
holsteinim pretty sure02:22
holsteinyou have to have that drive present at boot02:22
holsteinor the machine will complain02:23
holsteinand not boot windows or ubuntu02:23
holsteinprobably a work around though02:23
new2ubuntuthats the idea...once im sure i can install it ok and everything works, i'll partition my computers internal drive and install there02:23
holsteinbut right out of the box02:23
holsteinyou'll have that going on02:23
holsteincool02:24
holsteinyeah, internal will *just work*02:24
new2ubuntu:'( no luck connecting wireless...even trying02:25
holsteinwhat about wired?02:25
holsteindo you see both net adapters in lspci?02:26
* new2ubuntu shoots himself (for forgetting to test wired)02:26
new2ubuntugive me just a sec : )02:26
holsteinlol02:26
holsteintake your time02:26
new2ubuntuok, nope, no dice02:26
new2ubuntufirefox cannot find server02:26
holsteini think this is an important step02:26
holsteinhmmm02:26
holsteinyou might want to run lspci02:26
holsteinthen02:26
new2ubuntuyep, done that02:26
holsteintake the lines02:26
holsteinfrom your net adapters02:27
holsteinand start google-ing02:27
holsteinubuntu 10.04 dell 270002:27
holsteinwhatever02:27
holsteinOR02:27
new2ubuntunet adapters?  is that the stuff that terminal spits out when i run lspci?02:27
holsteinubuntu lucid atheros whatever02:27
holsteinyup02:27
new2ubuntuok, i'll try that02:27
holsteincould just be a little trick that you need to do02:27
holsteinor maybe they are not supported by the kernel02:28
holsteini would try and sort that out02:28
holsteinand you should be able to sort it out on the live CD02:28
holsteinbefore installing02:28
holsteinALSO02:28
holsteinsometimes i try other distro live CD's02:28
holsteinlike knoppix02:28
holsteinor whatever02:29
holsteinand sometimes i can learn from that experience02:29
holsteinassuming its supported in another live disk and not ubuntu02:29
holsteinwhich is really seldom02:29

stlsaintsucks i couldnt help out with user day :(06:32
pleia2stlsaint: next time! :)06:32
hobgoblinstlsaint: why couldn't you help?06:33

stlsaintpleia2: next is not good enough!!!!! :'(06:43
hobgoblingood day mathay - long time06:44
ddecatorstlsaint: schedule your own event :)06:44
mathayhello hobgoblin06:44
stlsaintddecator: YOU just make sure i receive hospitable treatment from your bug comrades!! :D06:44
ddecatorstlsaint: haha, we have a meeting on tuesday and we'll be discussing how the mentoring program is going. you're welcome to join if you want to give feedback06:45
stlsaintddecator: AAAAAGAGAGAGAGAGGA why are all the freaking meetings on a tuesday!!! I CANT MAKE TUESDAY MEETINGS!!!!06:45
stlsaintddecator: btw, should i have some experience in something before i go out for getting a mentor?06:46
ddecatorstlsaint: haha, well if there is anything you want me to bring up, just let me know. and not really, we expect people who want mentors to be new to triage. if you are interested in a certain package, that helps, but it's not necessary06:47
stlsaintim sure there will be :|06:48
ddecatorthere will be what?06:49
stlsaintpackage06:49
ddecatorah, good! a mentor should make sure you're able triage general bugs, but having a specialization in mind allows us to match you up with someone who specializes with that package who can get you in touch with the right people and teach you how that package may be handled differently from others06:51
stlsaintddecator: well considering im in texas and i know half the people on the mentors list are in other countries...shouldnt it come down to timezones instead of packages?07:01
ddecatorstlsaint: TZ takes priority, but they try to match on interest as well07:03
ddecatorer, time available rather than TZ07:04
stlsainti hate utc07:05
stlsaintnever been able to really convert times07:05
ddecatori'm starting to figure it out, mainly because i keep having to figure out what time meetings are and such07:05
stlsaintddecator: so do i just put my name on list or....?07:09
ddecatorstlsaint: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad/Mentors07:11
stlsaintyea that was the list i was referring to07:11
ddecatoralright, then yah, you should just need to request membership on LP07:12
ddecatorthe admins will take care of things from there :)07:12
ddecatorwow, quite a few more mentors since i last looked07:13
stlsaintso no name on list just request on for membership on lp?07:13
ddecatoryup, the admins keep the wiki updated, so they'll add you after you get assigned to someone07:15
stlsaintddecator: this one: https://edge.launchpad.net/~bugsquad-mentorship07:17
stlsaint?07:17
ddecatorstlsaint: that'd be the one07:19
stlsaint41 active members....is that 41 people waiting to be assigned?07:20
stlsaintddecator: ^^07:22
ddecatorstlsaint: nope, active members include mentors and current students. those pending approval are the ones waiting to be assigned a mentor07:23
stlsainthrm, some folks been waiting since last month, smh07:25
stlsaintalright i joined07:25
stlsaintddecator: holding you and kermiac responsible if my experience goes bad!! :P07:26
kermiacwhat the??07:26
stlsaintthats right...07:26
ddecatorstlsaint: some of them haven't been very responsive when the admins have tried to contact them iirc, so that's probably why they've been pending for that long07:27
kermiacah, welcome to the BugSquad stlsaint :) feel free to ping me if you need a hand with anthing mate :)07:27
ddecatorkermiac: no worries, stlsaint might just hate us in a couple of weeks :p07:27
stlsaintbrb07:28
kermiacI only just fired up irc so i'm still reading the backscroll07:28
ddecatorha, good timing07:29
hobgoblinddecator: that's a terrible thing to say about someone when they quit07:30
hobgoblinoh hi stlsaint07:30
stlsaintddecator: WTF!?!?07:30
ddecatorhobgoblin: he quit?07:30
hobgoblinstlsaint: it was not very nice :(07:30
ddecatori meant that the fact stlsaint mentioned him just as he got on IRC was good timing07:31
stlsaintddecator: i see we are going to have problems already!07:31
* ddecator has joins, parts, quits, nicks hidden07:31
hobgoblinso what is this bugsquad thing then - is it a new variation on the old theme ?07:31
ddecatorthe bugsquad is the bugsquad..07:32
hobgoblink07:32
* hobgoblin hopes they are better than the doc lot then 07:32
ddecatorhaven't worked with the doc team, but i think the bugsquad is good :)07:32
* hobgoblin might think about thinking about that team 07:33
ddecatorwow, that's 3rd level motivation07:35
hobgoblinI'm slow07:37
stlsainthobgoblin: i already have one strike against bugsquad...i dont believe in three >:|07:39
ddecatorstlsaint: ...what?07:40
stlsaintddecator: remember i already stated that i have had one bad experience with bugsquad...07:43
stlsaintwhich is why im inquiring alot about the squad before i proceed forward with trying to join07:44
ddecatorstlsaint: oh, gotcha, i couldn't figure out what "three" you were talking about, haha07:44
ddecatorit's more active in the morning for the western hemisphere07:44

nUboon2AgeHello all.  Question: I've got a USB device that I can see using lsusb, but not in Nautilus. I should say sometimes I can see it in Nautilus, and sometimes not.  What can I do to get it visible in Nautilus?19:27
aveilleuxnUboob2Age: Have you tried mounting it manually?19:31
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: not yet, can you step me through it?19:33
aveilleuxnUboon2Age: Can you pastebin the output of lsusb?19:34
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: yes...19:34
aveilleuxnUboon2Age: um... then please do it?19:34
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: yes, the "..." meant i was doing it...  http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/qSefhrDM19:36
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: its an ipod19:37
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: it seems to have a mind of its own, sometimes it mounts by itself, but for the last few hours of rebooting, unplug/replug, lsusb, it hasn't come up in Nautilus.  It was working last night though, somewhat more consistently.19:40
aveilleuxnUboon2Age: Give me a second while I remember how lsusb works19:40
aveilleuxnUboon2Age: ...yeah, I don't really remember how to interpret the information that lsusb gives you. I thought it would give the /dev/usbX names.19:45

geirhanUboon2Age: Run dmesg,  take a note of what the last line is, then plug in the device, wait for it to settle for a few seconds, then run dmesg again and paste the lines that are new since last time.19:58
nUboon2Agegeirha: aveilleux: http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/jqeiixGM  (I'm having to do this in between other tasks)20:04
geirhanUboon2Age: Did it appear in nautilus after that?20:05
nUboon2Agegeirha: aveilleux: no it didn't20:05
IllusionI am a newbie.. how do i increase the partition size of ubuntu. I have dual boot xp/ubuntu?20:07
geirhanUboon2Age: Hm. Ok. disconnect it. Run «devkit-disks --monitor-detail» in a terminal, leave it waiting, then insert the device again. Any output from the command?20:08
aveilleuxIllusion: you can use a GParted boot CD to resize the partitions20:08
geirhaIllusion: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition20:08
geirhanUboon2Age: Oops, sorry, devkit-disks changed name to udisks in lucid20:09
geirhaI think20:09
geirhaI'm currently on karmic20:09
Illusioni will try it out.. Thanks aveilleux and geirha... Have spent 3 days on ubuntu and i love it so far..20:10
geirhaIllusion: Wait20:10
geirhaIllusion: Did you install it inside windows (wubi), or by booting the ubuntu CD and then installing?20:11
Illusiongeirha: installed by booting ubuntu CD nd installing20:11
bobo123isn't gparted included on the ubuntu-cd btw? so Illusion could boot from the ubuntu livecd and start gparted from it20:11
geirhaIllusion: Ok, good. It would be a different solution if it was a wubi install.20:12
geirhaYes, gparted is included on the ubuntu cd, so you can use the ubuntu cd to resize.20:13
nUboon2Agegeirha: aveilleux: i did udisks --monitor-detail and there was no output to the terminal when i plugged in the usb/ipod cable20:13
nUboon2Age$ udisks --monitor-detail20:14
nUboon2AgeMonitoring activity from the disks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.20:14
Illusiongeirha: i will boot up using the ubuntu CD but where will i find gparted20:14
nUboon2Agegeirha: aveilleux: nothing followed...20:14
geirhaIllusion: System -> Administration -> gparted20:15
geirhanUboon2Age: Hm. Just to rule out bad port(s), try connecting it to different usb ports and see if that changes anything.20:16
nUboon2Agegeirha: aveilleux: tried different usb ports, but the  udisks didn't report anything...20:18
geirhanUboon2Age: And did not turn up in nautilus?20:21
nUboon2Agecorrect20:23
nUboon2Ageaveilleux: geirha: correct20:23
geirhanUboon2Age: Hm. Not much useful information in the places I expected. Currently out of ideas :/20:25
geirhaNever touched an ipod myself either.20:25
* hobgoblin neither 20:26
hobgoblinnUboon2Age: I would ask though if you have used it on windows recently and it got an upgrade20:27
nUboon2Agehobgoblin: geirha: not that I'm aware of, but i guess its possible.  Its my gf's20:30
nUboon2Agegeirha: i hadn't heard of udisks before... is there a way to use it to mount a device?  How do I know how to tell it what the device is?20:31
holsteinnUboon2Age: is there a 'disk mode' or some setting from the ipod?20:34
holsteinit is showing up in lsusb even if it doesnt mount correct?20:35
nUboon2Agegeirha: holstein: hobgoblin:    dump of udisks --dump  http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/81Vum52220:36
hobgoblinholstein: it shows in lsusb20:36
holsteinyou could run sudo fdisk -l20:36
holsteinand try mounting the partition manually20:36
holsteincheck out20:37
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount20:37

nUboon2Ageholstein: yes it shows up in lsusb but not in Nautilus.20:42
nUboon2Ageholstein: I don't know about a 'disk mode' on ipod.20:43
hobgoblinnUboon2Age: he's gone for the moment20:43
nUboon2Ageholstein: geirha: hobgoblin: one thing, is showing up in Nautilus the exact same thing as being 'mounted' ?20:43
hobgoblinmuzha swoody - good day gents20:43

hobgoblinnUboon2Age: yes it is20:44
swoodyand to you hobgoblin :)20:44
nUboon2Agehobgoblin: thank you i wasn't sure.20:44
hobgoblinnUboon2Age: at least more or less :) things will show there if the system recognises them - I have drives in nautilus that are not actually mounted20:44
hobgoblinnUboon2Age: unfortunately ipods are one of those things that can be problematic20:45
nUboon2Agehobgoblin: you're telling me. :/21:08
nUboon2Agegeirha: hobgoblin: holstein: did the udisks --dump at http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/v0bi9xxK provide any useful info?21:09
nUboon2Agegeirha: hobgoblin holstein: i guess i don't see the ipod represented there.  So udisks has some switches for mounting, but i don't know how to address the ipod to use it.21:13
nUboon2Age$ udisks --mount ipod21:17
nUboon2AgeCannot stat device file ipod: No such file or directory21:17
