[05:15] stlsaint: Sure, no need to ask [05:15] sorry nhandler I've gotten a hold of stlsaint on my trying to get https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp in line with wiki guide lines [05:16] Ok phillw [05:17] I'll let you have a chat [05:18] I need guidance on setting up ubuntu x to output 720 resolution out of my 3-component output can anyone help me? [05:27] hello [05:27] pyrodood: sup [05:28] i'm looking to see if i can find some help [05:29] pyrodood: you say you have 3-component output? what do you mean? [05:29] 3-component hd [05:29] it also has hdmi, dvi, and vga [05:29] but i don't have an hdmi cable [05:30] and my plasma only has 3-component and hdmi connections, no vga [05:30] i have it hooked up with 3 component and was functioning in windows [05:31] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_video [05:32] basically i'm on a vga monitor now cause after boot into ubuntu nothing shows up on my tv [05:33] so you are wanting to dual video? [05:33] or just use one video with 720 resolution? [05:33] well not really, i just want to output the 720 resolution to my tv [05:33] out of the component video output on the motherboard [05:34] out of the component video output on the motherboard, it has ati radeo 1200 built-in [05:34] stlsaint: the PM is my best shot on it [05:35] but if i could do dual monitors that would be ok i could just turn off the vga monitor [05:35] my goal was to just get it running on the tv though [05:35] phillw: their not wanting dual [05:36] unfortunately i must depart but i would recommend you start here: [05:36] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution [05:36] ok thanks [05:36] pyrodood: do you understand the use of xorg? [05:36] well not really [05:37] i mean i read some stuff and looked for xorg.conf but wasn't there [05:38] so i typed in xrandr [05:39] it shows vga connected (i'm on it), s-video disconnected, HDMI-0 disconnected [05:40] don't see anything listing the DVI or component video outputs unless they are somehow listed under HDMI [05:40] pyrodood: what system on you on and what release of ubuntu are you running? [05:40] 10.04 [05:40] Ubuntu [05:40] you say you DO NOT have a xorg.conf [05:42] stlsaint: in 10.04 you not have a xorg.conf [05:42] cp: cannot stat `/etc/X11/xorg.conf': No such file or directory [05:42] you have to make one if you really want to use it [05:42] aye, well there may be a problem worth fixing [05:44] pyrodood: please view post#8 here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1437980 [05:46] pyrodood: you dont have a xorg cause ubuntu doesnt make one on its own by default but you can make one yourself [05:47] so if i type in gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf [05:47] that will open a document for you but it will be blank [05:47] it opens up a blank document then I just add something in there and save it and then reboot? [05:48] also if xrandr only shows VGA, S-video, HDMI does that mean the system is not seeing my component video or DVI? [05:49] shows you the names of different outputs available on your system (LVDS, VGA-0, etc.) and resolutions available on each: [05:50] perhaps if i buy an HDMI cable and connect it to the tv it will automatigally detect it and work? then not fool with the xorg.conf unless that doesn't work [05:50] its all up to you mate [05:50] xranr list 3 devices - i'm thinking it should list at least 5 [05:51] pyrodood: it will list what your system has capabilites to do [05:51] pyrodood: alright really...this time i must go...sorry i cant be of more help [05:51] nite all [05:51] well the system is capable of component video cause i was using it in windows but i don't see it show up in xrandr [06:02] * Sary is back (gone 00:06:16) [06:02] * Sary is away: Not @ Desk [07:25] * Sary is away: Not @ Desk [08:39] can someone pastebin this file for me: us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_*_main_source_Sources [08:56] hello sebsebseb [08:56] sorry [08:56] i meant seidos [09:25] Hi all. I have a problem. I need to change permissions in usr/share/games/simutrans folder and cannot. [09:26] I know it's a "log as root" issue and I have tried the commands at the wiki, as recommended at forums but still can't change permissions [09:27] Maju: got a link I can look at [09:27] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo [09:28] oh - I know that one :) [09:28] so what command are you using and what does it say when it fails [09:29] I' m trying to make the simutrans folder shared with Samba [09:29] So I can download a pak in it [09:29] I'm trying to use the graphic interface (I can't speak in UNIX) [09:30] and using system - admin - shared folders is not working? [09:31] I'll try that. Hold on [09:32] I don't have that option. [09:32] I'm on Lucid [09:33] I remember on Hardy it was easy to temporarily log as root and operate the system at will. [09:34] not used samba tbh - but I am on lucid and the option is there in my menu [09:34] you can sudo -i to get a temporary root terminal [09:35] I just installed(reinstalled?) Samba cause the system asked me to but doesn't help [09:35] But I do not have any "Shared Folders" menu in System - Administration [09:37] Uh. Now I did something slightly different and says: "net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /usr/share/games/simutrans as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this. [09:38] I did the sudo -i, sudo su, etc but seems they are only useful for terminal [09:39] What I need is to temporarily be able to use the graphic interface as Root because in terminal I only know how to copy-paste what others suggest [09:40] You can use Ubuntu and have no idea on how to use a terminal, right? [09:41] yep [09:42] you can edit the file - gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf and do as it asks in the error [09:44] Thanks, I would never have been able to edit that file without your help. :) [09:44] welcome [09:44] make sure you put it in the global section [09:45] good luck Maju [09:48] Managed to create a share but still cannot write in it. [09:55] Anyone there? [09:58] How do I change the owner of a folder from root to me (only user)? [10:04] hello Maju [10:04] Maju: you probably dont want to do that for folders outside of your $HOME [10:05] I probably do because I can't use a lot of stuff because it's controlled by Root [10:05] use 'sudo' [10:06] Sudo what? I said before I can't "speak" UNIX [10:06] NVM, think I found a shortcut here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/rootlauncher/ [10:07] I know acting as root might pose a danger but not being able to do it is a big problem [10:08] Maju: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo [10:08] that explains the Ubuntu file permissions well. Why we use sudo ect [10:09] I started there and was of no help. The big problem is that the terminal is not graphic so I'd need to learn a lot only to use MY computer [10:09] After all it's MY computer, right? [10:09] Maju: yes if you want to open a Nautilus window with root permissions use: gksudo nautilus [10:10] Thanks. That means I can alter permissions in such folders as root, right? (Haven't tried yet) [10:10] i wouldnt. Its like that for security reasons [10:12] I'm just manipulating game folders, it should be safe [10:12] I find the phrase "security reasons" patronizing and annoying. After all it's my PC's security [10:13] But thanks anyhow [10:13] If you change ownership of all files from /, a lot of bad things will happen. Don't do it. [10:13] but like you said it is your computer :) [10:14] Maju: we are here to offer our opinions and help. No one wants to 'annoy' you :) [10:14] I'm not changing ALL files but sometimes I need to allow admin to operate in such files [10:15] It may be wrong design by game-makers but the case is that that usr/share/games folder needs to be accessible [10:17] Anyhow, I solved my problem and could only do that ignoring the "it's dangerous" advice. I know you guys have our security in mind but I need to solve real problems beyond those concerns. [10:17] Thanks and bye [10:17] lol [10:18] beyond the concerns of messing up your computer? [10:18] its a thankless job, but someone has to do it :) [10:29] hello phillw* [10:45] how to petition the queen for royal warrant to arrest the cabinet for treason? they are a serious threat to the country's interests... [10:51] hmmm, not sure if i know how to do that [10:52] but that is definetly the most interesting question i have seen asked in here [10:52] :) [11:14] hey everyone i just wanted to know how it get rid of all my partitions! i have ubuntu lucid on onside an d debian lenny on the other i want to delete dedian and try reinstall it !! thanks in advance!! [11:31] aenima: i have to run and grab breakfast [11:31] ill be back [14:26] hi. does anyone know how to mount a device that is not being recognized? [14:26] the hdd until y'day had two partitions and now there is no root file system. [14:28] * svaksha had run fsck y'day and it corrected bad blocks but does not wven recognize the device today --so i cant retrieve anything and cant even reinstall ubuntu [14:28] TIA [14:36] heh, I still seem to have voice here :) [14:37] nigelb: we've been all really busy and have not got to setting -VA to a lot of people [14:37] nigelb: sorry, I can devoice you if you'd like ;) [14:37] haha [14:37] paultag: I redirected svaksha here for help, just checking if you weren't giving her a hard time :D [14:38] * nigelb takes good look at /names [14:38] nigelb: the channel was silent till you came here [14:38] not me! He's like awesome ;) [14:38] bah [14:38] paultag: hi [14:38] hey there svaksha :) [14:39] paultag: she has some disk problems which is way beyond my capability to solve :) [14:39] anyone know how to use testdisk? [14:39] svaksha: you mentioned it looks like there are no more partitions on the drive? [14:42] paultag: i tried fdisk, fsck, e2fsck, with the live cd, nothing worked. No partitions are visible so i suspect hw trouble but wanted to ask before opening it to check for loose connections [14:42] opening == checking hardware [14:43] also, i was told testdisk can recover partitions. but i've never used it so any tips ? [14:43] humm [14:43] svaksha: I don't know much about that util [14:44] svaksha: but I can help with general stuff [14:44] hold on [14:44] brb [14:44] on the phone [14:48] svaksha: I'd open the box up and check the disk is rotating and that all the cables are secure. As you say, it does seem to be hardware as opposed to s/ware. Another thing to check is your BIOS - see if the device is listed there. [14:48] i found that its a packge in ubuntu (apt-get works) but how do i use it for a diskthat is not mounted? [14:49] phillw: seems like i dont have more options :( [14:49] i'd certainly want to see it listed in BIOS [15:08] phillw: its not listed in bios. i suppose its bad sectors then :( [15:13] svaksha: if it's not in bios then it looks like a hardware problem. it's time to open the box and check leads. if it is a desktop unit, swapping the data lead may work if your machine has a lead with 2 connectors on it. other than that you'd be looking at using a caddy for the drive. [15:17] phillw: what is a caddy? would you happen to know where the data lead would be located on the mobo? i removed the wires and put them back and after that too i cant see the bios [15:17] i mean cant see hdd [15:18] svaksha: it is an external usb device that you can plug a hard-drive into. when you power up the machine, does the disk spin up? [15:23] yes it does [15:23] hmm, well the disk is not 'dead' :-) [15:24] if it spins up there is hope. [15:24] morning folks [15:24] * svaksha prays it does work [15:26] phillw: disk issues? [15:27] svaksha: has, the disk spins up, but the bios is not 'seeing' it. [15:28] svaksha: what is the make model of computer? it would let me get an idea of the type of hard drive you have. [15:45] wb svaksha [15:46] phillw: thanks, i lost network and nigelb gave me the logs. ok, its an intel pentium 4, cpu 2.8ghz [15:46] 32 bit [15:46] pretty old m/c :) [15:46] no, the make and model of the computer, so I can have look to see how the hard disk is connected [15:47] * phillw perks up, sounds like it is made for lubuntu :-) [15:47] phillw: hmmm... its an assembled machine (here, in .in i can buy the mobo, hdd , etc and assemble it) [15:48] it == desktop [15:48] so if you are looking for a brand name (dell) , then its not [15:49] okies, there will be a grey 'ribbon' cable connecting the hard drive to the mobo and a set of leads for the power connector. [15:49] yes, i removed and re-fixed it [15:50] does that lead have more than one connector for hard-drives on it? [15:50] there are two actually, one ribbon and another colored (black, red, green) cable [15:50] yes [15:50] both connect to hte hdd [15:50] the* [15:52] the coloured one is the power lead. it will have 4 connectors on it. the data lead is the ribbon cable, it may be worth trying the other connector on the data lead. [15:59] phillw: what do you mean by 'worth trying the other connector' -- do you meanit should be interchnged [16:08] yes, try the other connector, it's a real long shot. Also check that where the data lead connects to the mobo is secure. [16:08] one other thing, how much dirt is there on the mobo? === steemed is now known as st33med === Phrea is now known as Phrosty === Phrosty is now known as Phrea [19:13] Hey, I'm trying to install over my existing installation of 64-bit Ubuntu Linux with 32-bit Ubuntu linux, but am having some trouble. [19:15] yes i also have windows on it [19:15] and i want to keep windows [19:15] OK [19:15] in the manual partioner [19:15] you need to select a partition as root [19:16] i forget what it looks like in there [19:16] but i think its as easy as right clicking [19:16] and selecting root [19:16] on the 'big' linux partition [19:16] you could also wipe that partition [19:16] the linux one/ones [19:16] and start over and do it the way you did it before [19:16] hmm well I believe the partition for 64-bit is /dev/ext4 [19:17] so I clicked it and clicked delete [19:17] and it wiped it (though this can be reverted) [19:17] then in that free space I clicked add [19:17] you dont even need to delete it [19:17] but its OK if you did [19:17] just make a new ext4 part [19:18] and set it to root [19:18] hmm one sec (computer in other room). i don't remember there being a root option [19:18] root = "/" [19:18] look for that sign too [19:18] the "/" sign [19:19] ah okay one second [19:20] Worked!
